The Otorohanga Kiwi House is a wildlife sanctuary in New Zealand that offers visitors the chance to see the country's national bird, the kiwi, along with other native wildlife such as weka and kea. The sanctuary also houses the tuatara, an ancient reptile species. Visitors can observe active kiwi birds throughout the day and view rare species in nocturnal settings. The environment allows for up-close encounters with the birds during feeding time.
This place was a very cool stop on our way to Waitomo. We were able to see the Kiwi and other native birds. The man working the entry was very friendly. The Tui bird they have is my absolute favorite and I wish I could have spent more time watching and listening to him. We was very vocal. We loved this place. Thank you!
Nicky H — Google review
While it was great to have the opportunity to see a kiwi, I felt that the experience can be more interactive than just observing the bird in a near pitch black room with views that were often obstructed. There were also a number of native birds on display but the ducks were the most abundant and interactive.
Brian L — Google review
The Kiwi House was an interesting stop, and we were lucky enough to see a Kiwi up close, which was a special moment! However, there are major renovations going on at the moment, and many areas are closed or under construction. Considering the current state of the facility, the entry price felt a bit high for what’s available. Hopefully it’ll be great once the upgrades are finished!
LucivarSa — Google review
We came here randomly while driving back from the glow worm caves. I wouldn’t recommend going out of your way to come here, as it’s pretty expensive considering there’s really not much to see. There are two kiwi nocturnal spaces, which obviously being dark are really hard to see into. One highlight was the big aviary, lots of pretty birds. Staff were also very nice and helpful 😊
Isabella P — Google review
We were unable to see the kiwi in the first enclosure which was disappointing, but luckily we spotted 2 kiwis in the second one and got a close up view. It was wonderful walking through the property and seeing all of the other native birds and geckos.
Melanie D — Google review
Not happy with the visit. Driving from north to New Plymouth we stopped here on a whim—three of us, NZ $70 total—and left after barely 10 minutes. All the kiwis were asleep (of course they’re nocturnal), so we literally saw nothing. No talks, no scheduled feedings, no interactive exhibits—just dark enclosures and silence. Felt like paying for an empty room. No playground and fun stuff for kids also. Staff are friendly and professional.
Alvin D — Google review
👍🏼 Like my review! So I got to see two Kiwi and felt so lucky to see two of them out of four. Plus, their aviary was so lovely and vast. I absolutely loved seeing the native pigeon which was so beautiful. I highly recommend it to others to enjoy this amazing place to see Kiwi up close and person. They are so cute.
John V — Google review
Got to finally see a kiwi bird. If you think youre not going to see it, let your eyes adjust to the dark and you'll finally be able to fully see one. The rest of the animals and birds were really cool to see as well. The path is mark that you can follow just to make sure you dont miss anything.

The park also features engaging activities like batting cages and paintball, ensuring there's something for everyone to enjoy regardless of age or skill level.
Great mini golf with some genuinely tricky holes. Batting cage was great fun. Haven't hit with a bat (baseball or cricket) for a while and I actually got pretty sore afterwards! Pricing is fair. Definitely worth a visit if you're in the area.

We loved coming here so much! The staff were friendly, and the kids enjoyed the stop, and the mini golf course was well kept. 1 of the most challenging mini golf courses, which we actually appreciated, and 1 of the prettiest.

All you need is the desire to have a great time and you will thoroughly enjoy yourself.

Otorohanga Kiwi Holiday Park is a laid-back resort located in Otorohanga, offering various amenities such as a TV lounge, communal kitchens, and a furnished terrace with BBQ area. Situated in a regional park, it's conveniently close to attractions like Waitomo Glowworm Caves and Ed Hillary Walkway. The holiday park features a seasonal outdoor pool, garden views, and complimentary wireless internet access.
Establishments were clean and in good condition. There is a nice kitchen with an adjacent tv room with up to date appliances and furniture. There is also a second, smaller kitchen that is slightly dated, but still clean and in good condition. Two showers with unlimited hot water. I had some issues with my card at check in and the staff was so kind and friendly despite the mix up. Great little spot!

Beautiful place but feel like the inside needed some professional cleaning. The beds looked like the sheets were not washed and just made from the last visitors. Hair and dirt found when I opened the sheets. Hair in the blankets. Outside is clean and beautiful. Dishes and cutlery were put away dirty. Just being honest... Was in a 2 bedroom motel.
Lats N — Google review
We stayed at the park in our caravan. I phoned ahead as we would be arriving after office hours. Our admittance was made easy by booking ahead and using the self service kiosk on arrival. Immaculate facilities with a covered in (removable) tepid heated pool with two heated spa pools outside. Close to town.

The reasons for lacking star review is for the following. Lack of accessibility, the ramp to the men's side of the toilet block has pebbles and odd cobble stone at the bottom, and a small 'step' to get on the ramp would mean many wheelchair users would need assistance. For my husband who is legally blind, these pebbles etc make navigation difficult as his cane gets stuck in them. Getting from the park up spot to the toilets is a hazard, the playground next to the toilet block has a drop off the grass also hard for him to negotiate. There was no ramp for the women's side of the block, they could use the men's side as the showers were unisexed. The showers we ok, low pressure. Curtains were not sufficient to stop the entire floor from getting wet. We are aware the weather wouldn't have helped, however the number of pot holes in the gravel driveways also made it hard for hubby to get around. Considering we paid $65 for one night, that would be a quick fix. We stayed the night of the 7th of October 2025. Following night stayed in a penny park up for just $10+$24 for 24 hours of power. Makes the excessive cost of this camp ground sting that bit more. If it had been cheaper we would have stayed a second night. Just to rest up before moving on. Edit: in response to your reply. Your own website says $60 for up to 6 people in a powered camp spot, plus $5 for the dog. With our nzmca discount brought it to $62 total. So I did get my total incorrect as to what I did pay. But if were not a wings member it would have been $65.

We parked up in our Motorhome for two nights with our grandchildren aged 4 & 5 enjoyed the pool and playground. The spa were awful, very high chlorine which caused a rash on our skin and they needed to be cleaned and filled up. One was only half full. Facilities were very good, free hot showers. Dump station and rubbish/recycle provided. Easy electronic checkin.
Nikki — Google review
The pool water quality was poor. One of my clients developed significant eye irritation, with their eyes turning very red after swimming. Another experienced temporary blurred vision following exposure. A third client accidentally inhaled some pool water, which led to short-term breathing difficulties. These incidents suggest the water may not have been properly treated or maintained.

A Culinary Gem in the Heart of Kiwi Country: Otorohanga Kiwi Holiday Park's Awesome New Kitchen! For any traveler relying on self-catering, the communal kitchen can make or break a holiday park experience. And let me tell you, the awesome new kitchen at Otorohanga Kiwi Holiday Park in Otorohanga is an absolute game-changer! It elevates the standard of holiday park facilities and truly enhances the stay for all guests. Stepping into the new kitchen space, you're immediately struck by its modern design and impeccable cleanliness. Gone are the days of cramped, dimly lit cooking areas. This kitchen is spacious, bright, and incredibly well-equipped, making meal preparation a pleasure rather than a chore. The park has clearly invested in top-of-the-line appliances. We found plenty of cooking hobs, ovens, microwaves, and ample fridge/freezer space, ensuring there was never a wait, even during peak times. What truly sets this new kitchen apart is its thoughtful layout and generous amenities. There's plenty of counter space for chopping and prepping, and multiple sinks mean you're not constantly jostling for a spot to wash up. The dedicated dining area is also a fantastic addition, providing a comfortable and inviting space to enjoy your culinary creations. Beyond the practicalities, the new kitchen fosters a welcoming and social atmosphere. We observed guests from various walks of life sharing recipes, stories, and even a laugh or two while preparing their meals. It truly feels like a hub where fellow travelers can connect. For families, budget travelers, or anyone who simply enjoys cooking their own meals while on the road, the new kitchen at Otorohanga Kiwi Holiday Park is a standout feature. It's clear that the park management has listened to feedback and delivered a facility that exceeds expectations. In summary, if you're planning a trip to Otorohanga and looking for a holiday park with exceptional self-catering facilities, look no further than Otorohanga Kiwi Holiday Park. Their new kitchen is a shining example of how a well-designed and maintained communal space can significantly enhance your holiday experience. Highly recommended!

Playground
The Jim Barker Memorial Playground was established in honor of the late Jim Barker, a respected figure in the Transport industry and a proud member of the Otorohanga community. This playground showcases various attractions for children of all ages, including a replica Otorohanga Transport truck and Straitsman Ferry. Its recent renovation has made it an ideal destination for families, with numerous engaging activities on offer. For adults, there is an impressive basketball court that is both well-designed and aesthetically pleasing.
Our kids saw this park from the car and immediately wanted to stop and play. This is a new or renewed park, with plenty of activities to enjoy. For adults the basketball court is awesome. Well designed and decorated. There is a small bike track in the back. The flying fox is the top attraction. There are Toilets and a water fountain. Just beside Countdown, worth a visit.

A fantastic playground with lots of unique creative structures for kids of all ages to climb and explore. My kids absolutely loved it. I can’t give 5 stars because we went there mid afternoon in the height of summer and I just about died - a few shade sails would be a huge improvement. Also disappointing that the water features were not turned on. But the kids would give it 5 stars I’m sure!!

A very informative walkway with many subjects about New Zealand history and events including items typical to being a Kiwi. It is well worth the visit and spending time reading all about events in NZ history. The only letdown was the smokers and people who vaped spoiling it for others. A lovely cafe, situated across from the Library. It's easy to miss when driving the busy main street, so use the Library as your landmark. Lovely food and coffee and they even have gifts. It's become a regular favourite and they do great salads.

The coffee and service were great, and the atmosphere was nice and cozy. The food looked great and was presented very well, but the flavors weren't fantastic. The Salmon Eggs Benedict were a bit bland, and the pancakes had some citrus to them that didn't quite appeal to my personal taste (not to say it was bad). The food was still good, though.

Had a lovely breakfast here. Plenty of GF options on the menu. Customer service is great and the vibe is very friendly. The food was good and they put effort into plating - I would give that part 4 stars, but their offer, friendliness and the accesibility of the Cafe takes the overall experience to 5 stars.

The sandwiches + muffin were great. The scrambled egg bought out by the Indian man was miniscule, tasteless and I'm sure he only used one egg- even though I clarified with the lady if it was two eggs. The toast wasn't even cooked properly. And for cost, it wasn't worth it. If only the lady cooked it, I'm sure it would have tasted better. He should go to cooking school or something. Go across the road if you want value and taste for money.

We waited almost 25 minutes for our meal which is not fast food-like. It was a little busy, possibly the only restaurant in the middle of nowhere so a pit stop. What we enjoyed about it was while waiting we could choose what music we wanted to listen to. Never seen this anywhere else. Our meals were not compromised due to the busy nature so was good overall and a good spot to stop when travelling by.

McDonald's in Otorohanga is conveniently located near the Waitomo Glowworm Caves. We stopped by for a quick lunch, and the service was reasonably fast. The small town of Otorohanga has several schools nearby, and this McDonald's also offers a drive-thru. I ordered the Almighty Texan BBQ Burger. The New Zealand grass-fed beef tastes exceptional, making the meal truly enjoyable. The fries were freshly fried, and the hot chocolate was perfect for combating the rainy weather.

The food and coffee we ordered need a lot of improvements. There are 8 of us and when our different orders came, it is not up to Macdonald's standard. In fact, was rather disappointed where this outlet does not serve MacDonald's Gourmet Burgers. So I ordered Double Big Mac, and when I first open up the box, the looks are so pathetic. There are hardly enough sauce on the beef patties. The Management needs to work on the staff's attitude towards food preparation and need to take pride in their own presentation of the food. The coffee served was totally undrinkable and makes one of my friends feeling sick and nauseated. I sincerely hope the management should have a thorough with the settings of the coffee machine. I gave 3 stars ratings basically base on one staff. A very friendly and attentive staff who bothers to constantly remind customers to watch out as the ground is wet and slippery due to the rain. While being busy, he kept us "entertain" and relate to different customers. Good Job!
