Ayacucho in 1 day

If you only have 1 day to spend in Ayacucho, we’ve narrowed down the top places you should check out to get the best experience of your time here.
Ayacucho offers a blend of well-preserved colonial architecture, dozens of historic churches, and lively plazas that reflect its deep Catholic and Andean traditions. The city is famous across Peru for its Holy Week (Semana Santa) celebrations, which draw visitors with elaborate processions and religious art. Nearby attractions include the pre-Inca Wari archaeological site and the Pampas de Ayacucho historic sanctuary, marking a decisive battle in South America’s independence. Ayacucho is also known for its handicrafts, especially retablos (painted wooden altarpieces) and textiles, which you can buy directly from local artisans.
With favorites like Encanto Huamanguino, Las Tinajas, and Plaza de Armas of Ayacucho, we’ll make sure you don’t miss out on all the must sees. We even included some of our favorite food spots around the area, like ViaVia Cafe Ayacucho and Sukre Restaurant Ayacucho so you can get the best taste of Ayacucho while you’re here. To see our full list of food recommendations, check out our best restaurants post. If you're traveling on a budget, you can check out our cheap eats post.

Beautiful and interesting place, where you can find the born of the ayacucho 's retablo. It's a little museum but friendly like a place. The ticket costs 4 soles adults and 2 soles kids. I suggest to visit it
Patricia G — Google review
Beautiful place which tells the story of one of the first "maestro de los retablos". It takes you through his life and successes making his art and getting recognized and rewarded for his work. They also have retablos and other pieces of souvenirs / artwork from the region for sale. Relatively small (a tour takes about 30 minutes) but very colorful. Staff is very friendly and competent. Highly recommended!

(Translated by Google) The Ayacucho Cathedral (also known as the Cathedral Basilica of Saint Mary) is the principal Baroque cathedral in the city of the same name. It is owned by the Catholic Church and was declared a National Historical and Cultural Heritage of Peru in 1972. [1] [2] Located in the Plaza de Armas, its construction began in 1632 and was completed in 1672. It is the largest cathedral in the country, as it is the main temple. The details of its construction are countless, and one particularly curious one is the presence of two small figures hidden at the top of the bell of the left tower, as if observing the city from above. Overall, the building has three naves, 18 columns supporting eight arches, 16 high vaults, 22 windows, and a beautiful triangular dome with an octagonal base. The architectural style of the façade is Seismicist Baroque. It is the only temple in the city that has three entrance doors on the front, where there are two statues representing the apostles Saint Peter and Saint Paul.

(Translated by Google) The imposing Cathedral of Ayacucho, also known as the Basilica Catedral de Santa María, is an outstanding example of colonial architecture and stands directly on the Plaza Mayor – a must-see for art and culture enthusiasts. It was built between 1632 and 1672 by royal decree of the Spanish King Felipe III and declared a national cultural heritage site in 1972. The facade is deliberately simple, but the interior reveals an overwhelming wealth of detail: ten retablos decorated with gold leaf, including the famous retablos of the Virgen de Socos, the Señor de Burgos, and the Niño Llorón.

ViaVia Cafe Ayacucho is a popular spot in Ayacucho, offering a diverse menu filled with dishes made from local ingredients like quinoa and alpaca. The cafe provides a unique panoramic view of the central square Plaza de Armas. Visitors can enjoy a variety of dishes and beverages, including delicious cocktails such as chilcano de coca or aguaymanto at the bar.
Loved our stay here. Perfect location and friendly staff. Rooms are simple but comfortable. The only downside is that they give on to the internal courtyard where people pass by, so you need to close the shutters for a sense of privacy, and there is the noise from the bustle of activity at night and in the morning. The cafe-restaurant is excellent with a wonderful view on the Plaza de Armas. We had breakfast, dinner and cocktails here. ViaVia is an excellent choice for visiting Ayacucho and great value for money.

We visiting ViaVia based on a friend's recommendations and it did not disappoint! The food was delicious, service was wonderful and we loved the atmosphere. Our server gave great recommendations and answered all questions that we had. She knew a lot about the menu and was able to help me make modifications based on my dietary restrictions. We came for an early dinner and got a table over looking the plaza de armas. 10/10 recommend, we will be back!

I only used the restaurant, because I stay in a different hotel when I visit Ayacucho. The Menu is just great it has something for everybody, local delicacies, and a great selection of beers. My favorite is Dieta de Pollo: chunks of chicken, with broth, broccoli, and potatoes, after a whole day walking and riding vans visiting near towns, the food is just perfect to feel satisfied.

Friendly, attentive waitstaff. Large portions of food and drink. Reasonable prices (we paid around S/.30 per main dish, S/.17 per cocktail, S/.9 for a quite good glass of vino tinto). One warning - don't pay with credit card here; they charged me in my card's currency faster than I could ask to be charged in soles so as to not be scammed out of a few percentage points. That was an ethically disappointing way to end an otherwise very positive experience.

I ate bfast and dinner here. They have a great 2nd floor patio that overlooks the main plaza/park in Ayacucho. Tasty food. The servers knew what was available. Bathrooms were clean. They also accept both Visa and Mastercard. I really enjoyed the hot pisco drinks!

I would never recommend this restaurant. Food arrives cold, female wait staff have really bad attitudes and are not interested in attending clients. Male wait staff aren't much more attentive but at least they don't have a bad attitude. Items on the menu don't mean they are available. Manager hangs around and does little but occupy a needed table. He has to go since he's the one that is ultimately responsible for the entire operation. I first thought that maybe they treated me poorly because I was a Gringo. But then I noticed that locals were getting up and walking out. You can't get a glass of tap´water with your meal. If you want water you have to buy it. Serving size for the daily special is ridiculously large. NO ONE every finishes this very large portion. And this is typical for ALL of the restaurants in Ayacucho. Half the food goes back to the kitchen in Ayacucho. Makes no sense whatsoever. Even if you ask for a smaller portion, they still bring you a portion that is big enough for two people. Overall, I give this place a one star rating because the food is always cold, waitresses are nasty, wait time is up to an hour for a simple order, manager is incompetent, and you will never see your waitress again after the meal is brought to the table. This place could be highly recommended because the food is fairly good. But there are other reasons to rate restaurants. View from the balcony tables is wonderful since the restaurant is on the second floor. Tables are too close to each other on the balcony. This means no private conversations and chairs touching each other. Chaos reigns at this restaurant. If I was the manager things would be very different.
Steve I — Google review
The alpaca steak was fine, but the sauce provided was way too salty. My main complaint about this restaurant is that it has different floor elevations without proper warning. The men's toilet floor is three inches higher than the main floor. I hit it directly with my foot. Hurt like hell!!

Received enough french fries for a family of four. My wifi internet connection timed out, which I found quite annoying. As long as I am eating or drinking, I should have internet access!

Very poor service despite of tons of waiters. Wi-Fi for some unexplained reason is only for Ios. Waiters look at you but don't even come when you stare at them. Asked for addition to order and waiter just ignored it and we just waited for 10mins asked another waiter, this promised to bring and then after a while initial waiter finally did come and ask what we want. Service requires much more development in service as well as food. The saving thing is place

Walked in, everyone greeted me. Then I sat down at a table and was completely ignored, despite there being tons of waiters. No clue what’s going on here.
