Guatape in 1 day

If you only have 1 day to spend in Guatape, we’ve narrowed down the top places you should check out to get the best experience of your time here.
Guatapé is known for its vividly painted houses decorated with detailed “zócalos,” making a simple walk through town a major part of the experience. Nearby, the massive El Peñón de Guatapé (La Piedra del Peñol) offers a stairway ascent to one of Colombia’s most famous panoramic views over a sprawling man-made reservoir. Visitors can explore the lake by boat, kayak, or jet ski, and small islands and coves add to the scenic appeal. Its proximity to Medellín makes Guatapé a popular and accessible day trip or overnight escape.
With favorites like La Fogata, Restaurante Mirador del Lago N 2, and Parque Principal de Guatapé, we’ll make sure you don’t miss out on all the must sees. We even included some of our favorite food spots around the area, like Restaurante Mirador del Lago N 2 and KAFFA. Cafe Bar so you can get the best taste of Guatape while you’re here. To see our full list of food recommendations, check out our best restaurants post. If you're traveling on a budget, you can check out our cheap eats post.

Parque Principal de Guatapé

Park
Parque Principal de Guatapé is a charming square surrounded by eateries, shops, and a church. It's located in the picturesque town of Guatapé, which offers a glimpse into Colombian culture. The park reflects the vibrant and colorful nature of the community, making it a must-see for visitors. While exploring this colonial town, you can also enjoy delicious local food and interact with friendly locals.
We only had time for one day at Guatape to visit the Penol Rock and travel on the the Peñol-Guatapé Reservoir - the man-made lake. However, we were delighted to spend an hour or so wandering around the central Square and the incredibly coloured houses leading in and out plus the murals on the sidewalks and street walls which make this an incredibly colourful and interesting town. In fact Guatape is famous for its colorful zócalos-decorative murals. It is worth leaving a little bit of time to take in the atmosphere of this place.

A very colorful and beautiful town, it's catholic church is worth the admiration, lots of wood work, la calle de las sombrillas, is breathtaking

A beautiful little town friendly people, lots of shops and restaurants, feels very authentic.

The whole area belongs to one person/company so it's completely pointless trying to negotiate anything. It costs 30000 pesos (£6) to climb almost 700 steps to the top. My mate did it in 5 and half minutes while I drank a coffee at the nearest bar with great viewpoint. When he came back down he said the view was exactly the same!
Duncan H — Google review
Beautiful town rich with history. Be prepared to hike up almost 800 steps. The view is amazing!

Plazoleta de Los Zócalos, also known as The Little Square of the House Pedestals, is a vibrant public plaza located along Carrera 28A in Guatape. This picturesque spot is filled with brightly painted structures and lined with beautifully crafted moldings called "zocalos" that adorn the buildings in the town center. Visitors can immerse themselves in the lively atmosphere of the city, explore colorful streets, discover wall art, and enjoy local coffee shops and restaurants.
The Plazoleta de los Zócalos in Guatapé is a truly magical place that everyone should visit at least once in their lifetime. Its vibrant colors and unique artwork make every corner a visual delight. This is the perfect spot for strolling, capturing stunning photos, and immersing yourself in the cultural charm of this picturesque town. The surrounding area is filled with shops, cafés, and restaurants offering something for every taste. The locals are incredibly welcoming and make the experience even more enjoyable. Without a doubt, it’s a must-visit destination for anyone looking to connect with authentic Colombian culture. Highly recommended!

Cute little town with lots of photo opportunities. Lots of gift shops, some with some more unique offerings. The restaurants all seem to be good with decent prices. Some unique local brew beers available in a couple places too.

Dry colorful and fun place to visit. It’s mandatory to get a photo with the umbrellas while you’re here. Good snacks, food and shops. Would like to spend some more time here on a future trip

Nestled amidst the bustling streets of the city lies the enchanting Plazoleta de Los Zócalos. This hidden gem is a delightful surprise for anyone seeking respite from the urban chaos. I stumbled upon this quaint plaza while exploring the vibrant neighborhoods of the city, and I couldn't be more pleased with what I found. The Plazoleta de Los Zócalos boasts a perfect blend of history, culture, and tranquility. The intricate cobblestone pathways lead you through a charming array of colonial-era buildings adorned with colorful facades. It's like stepping back in time to a bygone era, yet with all the modern comforts at hand. One of the highlights of my visit was the lively atmosphere that permeates the plaza. Local artisans showcase their craft, offering a variety of handmade goods that make for unique souvenirs. The aroma of freshly brewed coffee wafts through the air, inviting you to savor a cup at one of the cozy cafes lining the plaza. But perhaps what captivated me the most was the sense of community that thrives here. Families gather on the benches, children play joyfully in the open space, and musicians serenade visitors with soulful melodies. It's a testament to the rich cultural tapestry of the city, where people from all walks of life come together to celebrate life's simple pleasures. Whether you're a history buff, a culture enthusiast, or simply seeking a peaceful retreat, Plazoleta de Los Zócalos has something to offer everyone. It's a place where time seems to slow down, allowing you to immerse yourself fully in the beauty of the moment. Don't miss the chance to experience this hidden oasis in the heart of the city.

Great place to shop. I suggest you take the little cars to go around the plaza. It is an inexpensive mini tour ride.
Carmen Z — Google review
Fin place to take pictures. The steps need a little paint but still great for taking group pictures! There are several places to eat and shop. The prices aren't bad for souvenirs. There's a store that built a frame with Guatapé on it. It's free to take your picture there. That store has his prices and the lady there is very nice and friendly. We always shop there.

I took the Rock tour and was excited. Be forewarned if you are obese or completely out of shape this tour is not for you. Moving on once you climb the Rock and reach the top it's amazing. Do not go on a weekend or you will spend an hour trying to get to the top. After the trip you are taking to a boat ride then a tour through the city of Los zocalos. Now that was worth the money. It is absolutely a beautiful tiny little town with so much color and artwork. It has sort of an indigenous feel to it but make no mistake the people are amazing you get a free lunch with the tour and it's sort of okay don't expect much but nonetheless it's well worth the money make sure you take water with you

Today, we reached Guatapé, Colombia, following a two-hour bus journey from Medellín, which cost 40,000 peso's for the two of us. Upon arrival in Guatapé, we settled in and then ventured out to discover our new environment. It's a very colorful town indeed. Did lots of walking around main square and side streets, stopped enjoyed the a beer and people watched. Nice town. 3btraveler

Nestled in the picturesque town of Guatapé, La Fogata has become a must-visit destination for food lovers seeking an authentic culinary experience. This charming eatery offers a delightful array of dishes that celebrate local flavors, from homemade rape to succulent filet mignon and expertly cooked trout. Each plate is crafted with care, reflecting the rich traditions of Colombian cuisine. La Fogata is conveniently located near the Malecon, making it an ideal spot for those craving hearty portions at reasonable prices.
Frontal view to the water on the main street with a terrace on the first floor. The steaks are absolutely amazing — tender, flavorful, and cooked with care. Just a heads-up: if you usually order your meat rare, you might want to go one level more cooked than you’re used to, as they serve it truly rare here. That said, the quality is excellent, and the chimichurri adds a perfect touch. Little note: the baby beef is perfect. The fillet mignon is huge - thread carefully 🤣 Don’t miss out on their natural juices, especially the ones with two mixed fruits — they’re refreshing, vibrant, and a highlight of the meal. PS. Although not on the menu, ask for a side of tajada de plátano maduro (you won’t regret it) 😉

Please read all the low rating reviews before coming here if you want to have good quality food. Yes views and service are great, but the quality of food is very poor. Cold, undercooked and questionable quality. I got the bandeja paisas after seeing it was the most mentioned dish. I’m a very adventurous eater, except when the quality of the ingredients is in question. I had to leave most of my dish. The catfish soup was quite nice, although I didn’t eat the fish meat itself.

We did a day trip to Guatape and came here for lunch. Between the three of us, we shared the grilled garlic trout with french fries, salad, fried plantain (fish was cooked well but french fries undercooked) and the BBQ chicken with steamed potatoes, salad and arepa (expected more charcoal BBQ but it was more breast - it was still decent) and the portion sizes were generous. The third floor looked out to nice views and overall the service was good.
Christine K — Google review
La Fogata was one of the best dining experiences we had during our trip to Guatapé! Located right by the water, the restaurant offers stunning lake views that perfectly complement the relaxed, welcoming atmosphere. The food was absolutely delicious—fresh, flavorful, and beautifully presented. The fish was cooked to perfection, and the portions were generous. They also have great drink options to enjoy while taking in the scenery. What really stood out, beyond the food, was the service. The staff was kind, attentive, and made us feel right at home. It’s the kind of place where you can sit back, enjoy a great meal, and take your time soaking in the beauty of Guatapé. Whether you’ve just climbed El Peñol or spent the day exploring the colorful town, La Fogata is the perfect place to relax and refuel. Highly recommended!

Tried La Fogata while visiting Guatape, the view from the second floor is beautiful, the food was delicious, great service. The food took a bit long , but the server make sure we had drink and appetizers ready. Will definitely come back.
Juan A — Google review
What better to eat in Medellín/Guatapé than a Bandeja Paisa. I had my high hopes since that is their dish but it turned out a flop. It wasn’t as good as I had in other Colombian restaurants. The location was perfect though. The service was slow.
Thetravelercarl — Google review
Can here for lunch on a beautiful Sunday and what an enjoyable meal! We had trout, ribs, and baby beef with an assortment of sides (Yuka, steamed potatoes, fries, patacones, AND salads) and the food was delicious! Service was equally good and great value. Highly recommended if you're in the area.
Danny D — Google review
Yes, they are on the pricier side, but portions were huge and the food was delicious. We really enjoyed the barbecue chicken; it wasn’t Texas barbecue, but still good. The Bandeja Paisa dish was delicious and the size/variety was impressive. Sadly, the view that other reviewers mentioned was blocked by some construction, but it was okay.

El Peñón de Guatapé, also known as Penol Rock, is a must-see destination near Medellin. This 200-meter-high granite monolith offers breathtaking panoramic views of the region and the stunning blue lagoon below. Visitors can climb the 659-step brick staircase to reach the top and enjoy the exceptional scenery. The area also offers various outdoor activities such as ziplining, speed-boating, kayaking, and fishing for families to enjoy.
Very touristy, but a breathtaking view. 800 steps to climb to reach the top, and a very nice reward! I'd recommend a visit as part of a package tour of Guatape and the surrounding area. We were lucky enough to arrive early to avoid the crowds. A must-do for the view!
Mich _ — Google review
In comparison to other places in the area, it's just OK... but you kind of have to go as it is on most tourist lists. The town of Guatape is lovely, even if it is a bit of a tourist trap.
Arthur K — Google review
We visited this interesting tourist spot with a day tour. We had quite good weather and we arrived early in the morning (around 10:30AM) when it was not too busy. At the bottom there lots of restaurants, souvenirshops and toilets. There are free toilets next to the ticketbooth so you don’t have to go to one of the restaurants where you have to pay. After you get your tickets you start the climb up. The stairs were quite okay, it took us about 20 minutes to reach the top. Here you have great views of the surroundings and the lake. There are toilets at the top as well. In about 30 minutes you can start your descend again which takes more or less the same amount of time. It was quite impressive to visit this.
Sam H — Google review
Really good option to look at, this is the biggest and nearest attraction if you are staying in Medellin. To go up it costs 30,000COP roughly $8.50 and to get there you have to climb 705 stairs (20 min climb). It’s not recommended if you have heart conditions and you still have to stop 3-4 times to catch your breath. Overall the place is very nice with a lot of food options and drinks.
Fernando A — Google review
Lovely town. We did manage to climb the monolith, at first easy but that 500/600 steps we start feeling it in our knees. The town Guatape is a must visit. Recommend to do this with on a day tour.
Shilton D — Google review
Awesome place. The climb is workout with a view for sure. 30k Colombian pesos which is around 8 dollars are totally worth it.
Leo B — Google review
Mystical and spectacular, the town is beautiful, one of the most beautiful places I have ever visited. The hotels and restaurants are amazing. Highly recommend a visit
Carl J — Google review
I visited La Piedra del Peñón on a Wednesday morning. They opened at 8 AM, and we arrived by 8:20, which was perfect for avoiding the crowds of tourist vans that typically show up around 10 AM. We rented a car, and parking was minimal, though I don't recall the exact amount. The entrance fee was $15 per person, which seemed quite reasonable. As you make your way to the top, be sure to take pictures since the view is better ascending than descending. Prepare for some breaks on the way up—trust me, you'll need them! At the summit, you'll find snacks, drinks, and souvenirs available for purchase. You're sure to have a fantastic time!

Monasterio Santa Maria De La Epifania is a hidden gem that promises an unforgettable experience for visitors seeking tranquility and spiritual connection. Nestled in a stunning location, this monastery offers breathtaking views and a serene atmosphere perfect for prayer and reflection. Attending the Sunday mass here is truly special, especially with the enchanting Gregorian chants performed by the friendly monks, which create an incredible sense of peace.
I came to attend the Sunday worship. The monastery was full that day, even though it was pouring down with rain. The service was nice, some monks took part. There is also a small shop on site where homemade products are sold and thus support the maintenance of the monastery. The gardens are also said to be very beautiful and interesting, but I didn't visit them because of the weather. The monastery can be easily reached on foot in about 45 minutes from Guatapé.

What an amazing serene place. About a 40min walk from Guatapé. Beautiful countryside and the walk is pretty easy. Mostly flat. The Monastery has a tranquil ambience. The grounds are beautifully maintained. If you catch a service the hymns and chants are just beautiful. You can of course take a tuk tuk up there or drive. But then you miss the birds and nature just walking up.

We are from the U.S - not sure why this place has a lot of 1 stars. My wife and I shared the Churrasco steak and it was great. It was cooked well and very juicy. We also had a mojito and sangria. Service was good. You pay on the first floor and you got to the cashier register to pay.

Relies on the nice views and proximity to bus stop. Disappointing bandeja paisa. More beans than anything and the fried egg yoke looks like it has been hard boiled.

Tiki Taka is a delightful gem situated in the heart of the main plaza, offering an extensive espresso menu that coffee lovers will appreciate. This charming spot is known for its inviting atmosphere and exceptional service, making it a perfect place to unwind. The highlight here is undoubtedly their pizza de la casa, which boasts a perfectly thin crust topped with creamy bechamel sauce, generous portions of cheese, and hearty meats like ham and beef—definitely not your average pepperoni!
Best pizza (de la casa) in Colombia! If you like perfect thin crust, béchamel sauce, cheese, lots of real meat (ham y beef), and my favourite… no pepperoni :) Bonus terrasse with a table in front of the magnificent Church across the plaza. Enjoy!

Avoid this place, if you can. The trout with shrimp and cheese was just nasty. I tried to apply salt and hot sauce to help with the flavor but no go. And then they serve you coconut rice with it and that didn’t taste good either. I am assuming the seafood wasn’t fresh. It was a waste of money - costed $56mil or something like that.
Joyce L — Google review
Great ambiance. Our waiter was very attentive. Which if you’ve been in Colombia for some time is not the norm. The carnita burrito was the best I have eaten in 6 yrs here. We also had the churrasco which is a typical dish here but was very good.

Food was pretty bad for the price, and very very slow cooking and service. {you might say or well Colombia is like that, No there are other places in town that know how to cook and are pretty fast too in comparison). I ordered Meat and Churrasco, I got 2 meats. Worst Sancoche I've ever tasted. Best thing this place had was a Coconut Lemonade and fries. Everything else was bad cooking.
Lance T — Google review
Super good food! Very nice and helpful servers. I got the vegetarian burrito (10/10) with some extra bean puree on the side, would 100% recommend. My partner had the Pollo Apanada and was very happy. Nice portion size aswell!
Kristin S — Google review
The food at this restaurant was average, and the service was mediocre. During our meal, a panhandler kept bothering us, and the servers did nothing to stop him. I asked the server if I could buy him a meal to get him to leave, and he agreed. However, when he asked for a soda, the servers brought him a specialty drink instead of the soda I had ordered. I thought I was going to get a 4.000 drink, but I ended up paying 15.000 To make matters worse, they added a tip to the bill without our permission. Tipping is not customary in my country or Colombia, so I asked them to remove it, but they refused, claiming that it was already included. Overall, I had a negative experience and would not recommend this restaurant.

The service was extremely slow, we ordered breakfast when only two tables were occupied and it took them 50 minutes for a simple order, even coffee and hot chocolate took the same time. The food was terrible, it's sadder than it looks. Would not recommend this place for its food or service. The only nice thing is it's size and views, restrooms were clean.

You're paying for the view, that's it. The appetizers are decent, the drinks are watered down and the main dishes lack flavor. Food took a long time to arrive and was cold. Stay for the view but go eat elsewhere.

I understand there were difficulties because we were a group of 15 people, but that does NOT mean that they can make us wait for a hour to get us a cold food. We were 3 family, so we separated the order by family, and I saw the waiter write the orders on paper. After an hour, the waiter finally decided to bring us food after making eye contact for the first time in an hour and getting asked for food. After going through all the paper writing that the waiter did, he did not remember what we ordered. It was not like they didn’t remember what the family ordered, it was where the waiter did not remember what anyone ordered in the table. For whatever reason, the waiter was mad because he wasn’t able to figure who ordered a dish with a dish that no one ordered. All the customer that came before us was done eating by the time we GOT our food and no customer was left when we finished and was waiting for our food. The food was very cold when it arrived. Pechuga was very hard that my grandmother was not able to eat. The end, the waiter did have the paper he wrote when he took our order but still suffered to make the check for us to make. The waiter that served us was “Sebastian M.” And his reasoning was, “I had to serve too many people.” Very good reasoning if serving your own family at house, but a horrible reason if you are working at a restaurant. The view and bathroom was beautiful so if you want to go for a picture or bathroom, perfect. But if aiming for quick food or at least a delicious food with some kind of heat, I will NOT recommend this restaurant.

While visiting the stone, my friends and I were looking for a restaurant with the typical food... We decided to eat at this restaurant because of the view! The food was amazing!

First time trying a new spot at the rock in Guatape, and the last. It is pretty but terrible service and well considering the orders were wrong can't really say food is good when you didn't order it. If you want to have bad service and the wrong food this is your place. The restaurant closest to the rock has been amazing the last 4 times a little hard to find the entrance but the family actually takes your order and cares about you very sad I didn't give them my business today. Please consider giving yours I think thier name is the coffeebreak. You will know as they smile and take care of you

Terrible food and terrible service. The entrees were fine but mains really bad. The chicken soup tasted like a stock cube and the fish was fried until dry. Anywhere else would have been better
