Boyaca in 1 day

If you only have 1 day to spend in Boyaca, we’ve narrowed down the top places you should check out to get the best experience of your time here.
Boyacá, a small town in the Andean highlands of the Boyacá Department, offers a quiet look at traditional Colombian rural life, with whitewashed colonial houses and a cool mountain climate. It lies near the historic Puente de Boyacá, a key independence battlefield now marked by monuments and a large park. The surrounding countryside is dotted with farms, viewpoints, and small villages, making it a good base for scenic drives and low-key exploration. Visitors can also sample regional dishes and dairy products that the department is known for.
With favorites like Los Cuates Gourmet, Puente de Boyacá, and Museo del Chocolate - Villa de Leyva, we’ll make sure you don’t miss out on all the must sees. We even included some of our favorite food spots around the area, like Los Cuates Gourmet and El Costal Restaurante so you can get the best taste of Boyaca while you’re here. To see our full list of food recommendations, check out our best restaurants post. If you're traveling on a budget, you can check out our cheap eats post.

This tiny bridge played a key role in the final battle for New Granada's independence in 1819.
A beautiful place to remember our heroes, with amazing historical monuments

Historical site where our freedom was gained. In December is tradition to come here and look around the Christmas lights, although it doesn't change much from year to year, and the traffic jam can be a real pain. If you have been here for Christmas lights before, you won't miss much.

Beautiful historical site, nothing happening on a Thursday but very well maintained and presented

Because nothing says liberty like plastic dinosaurs, flamingos, & frogs. Honestly, in my opinion the brave hero’s who fought for liberty are now rolling in their graves to know what this historic battlefield turned into. Shame! Being a history buff and learning about this historic site my wife and I traveled here to pay our respects. However, we were extremely saddened to see what the locals have turned this amazing landmark into. We did not stay as we could not stomach the site.

If traveling to Colombia, you must visit this historical site, the heart of the Colombian Revolution lives here.

Awesome stop at this historical set. The place is big and beautiful, full of history. There is a gentleman who usually gets near the always lit torch and gives an explanation of the events that took place here. Highly recommend it.
John — Google review
Historic place where the battle that won Colombia's independence was fought. Very well preserved and maintained... better to visit on a week day to avoid the crowds. The small convenience store in site was nice and the attendant very helpful and knowledgeable... great place for a good photo opportunity.

This is spot where the colonial forces finally defeated the Spanish and Colombia with the surrounding countries gained their independence. A small monument but well maintained and worth a stop if only to appreciate the terrain in which the forces had to fight.

Museo del Chocolate - Restaurante Cacao - Villa de Leyva is a unique establishment that combines a restaurant and chocolate store with a small museum. The museum was established in 2015 and has since expanded to include a hotel, spa, boutique, jewelry store, bakery, and pastry shop. The restaurant offers a novelty experience with its focus on chocolate-based items.
Nice ambience, decoration and background music. Great chocolate dessert dishes. Excellent service!
Victor A — Google review
The worst customer service. The place although flashy is not good at all. The waitresses are too unfriendly and inattentive and besides that it is extremely expensive. Unbelievable to have to pay for four cups of chocolate and two bottles of water more than 50 dollars, besides waiting for an hour. The people at the next table complained and argued about the same thing. Unbelievable that they use a figure of Johnny Walker passing him off as a chocolate gentleman, they do not respect the reserved rights, a situation that will be reported to the whiskey brand. The site is overrated. Not recommended, one star is too much.

Just a trap for tourists. It is not a museum. It is just a store. Also they have two locations and tell you that the museum is at the other one , but there are no museum
Leo B — Google review
Definitely designed for tourists to spend their money. It is a restaurant on one side and chocolate store/museum on the other side. The restaurant is focused on chocolate items and not a full service place. It is a novelty restaurant. Then you feel obligated to visit the chocolate store to spend more money. Luckily, the small chocolate museum is free if you provide the receipt from restaurant. The museum is cute and takes about 10 minutes to tour and take pictures. Not sure what the regular cost of the museum is but I would not pay it. Have not eaten the chocolate yet but I am sure it is delicious.

Is a great restaurant to eat or drink something of chocolate, many things very delicious. Is a very beautiful restaurant to go alone or with some people. All decor is about chocolate. I loved it. Nice restairant in a nice town.

I'd already been to the other store they have on town( 3 years ago before covid), so I knew that prices were absurdly high but I saw their "chocolate beer" so I decided to give it a try to see check what all the fuss was about. Sadly, again 18k cop for a pint of beer that is not that good. Beer has no bubbles so it like a shake up beer bottle with no gas. Also, beer is sweet, way too sweet. It's not a porter type beer roast but a added sweet beer. Not my type but if you're a sweet guy, this will remind you root beer.

Fantastic place in Villa de Leyva. Diferent to everythig else. Ask for the garden to seat and dinoempanadas of longaniza to start. Not cheap, but worth the price.
Diego L — Google review
Museum is a big word, it's just a short exhibition, paying a small fee in chocolate from the shop is the only requirement to enter the exhibition. The choice of chocolates and specialties is great though! They also have a nice garden on the back if you want to eat there.

The Natural Reserve "Old Pueblito" is an impressive location that recreates an old town, complete with a pharmacy, cinema, school, and mayors office. It resembles an open-air museum where visitors can immerse themselves in history. Unlike many tourist destinations, this place does not have aggressive vendors on every corner. The dedication of the people behind this project is evident as they have put their hearts into it. Furthermore, the breathtaking view of the lake adds to its allure.
Very cool place! A reconstruction of an old town with its pharmacy, cinema, school, mayor’s office etc. It’s like an open air museum. Not a place where everybody tries to sell you something on every corner. I appreciate the effort that people made, you really can see that they put a lot of heart in this project. Plus awesome view on the lake. And all that just for 15K pesos.

(Translated by Google) It is a very pleasant walk to share with the family. A place where you connect with nature, fresh air. I loved it!!! It is advisable not to bring pets, for those who do not have the culture to pick up after their pets. You can do a short ecological walk. Although you can see the effort that the families who are in charge of the site make to maintain it and keep it clean; It is incredible to see how some people leave their waste, deteriorating the beautiful landscape and view that the lagoon offers. Thank you!!! Gracias!!!

(Translated by Google) It's a recreation of a Boyacá village, each establishment with its own unique details. Additionally, there's a slightly physically demanding ecological trail, including a tunnel, that leads to a small, green lakeside. There's a small cafe in an old railroad car where you can relax or even have lunch. A great effort has been made to maintain this place on the lakeshore. I was pleasantly surprised.

Delivery Restaurant
Los Cuates Gourmet is an exceptional dining establishment due to its diverse menu featuring both Mexican and Peruvian cuisine. The chef is extremely amiable and eager to provide information about the various options available, assuming they are not overwhelmed with customers. One can sample the delightful Pisco Sour cocktail for a pleasant surprise. Additionally, complimentary nachos accompanied by zesty sauces are provided as a kind gesture. While the main courses may be slightly costly, they are undeniably worthwhile.
After trying all Peruvian restaurants in Villa del Leyva, in my opinion only this bistro makes top quality Peruvian foods in the whole city. Far better than the others, and everything that I consumed here (Ceviche clasico, Aji de gallina, Arroz con mariscos) were close to perfection.
Robert T — Google review
Just the fact that they offer both Mexican and Peruvian food makes this place amazing. The chef is very friendly and willing to clarify all the options (as long as the place is not to busy). We tried Pisco Sour for the first time and found it to be quite tasty. They also give you some nachos with spicy sauces as a courtesy. The main courses are a bit pricey but worth it!

Tatiana J — Google review
Nice people great food and allow dogs. The food was very good especially the fruit in milk drinks. I had raspberry and my wife had strawberry. We ordered too much food though. If you don't eat a lot split the plates. We should have just ordered the appetizers or just the main courses. They allowed us to have the dog which was a big help.

I’ll say the food was pretty good, the fajitas. Recommendation to the chef….light brine or marinate your beef, so it’s tenderized. Chicken, light brine. The beef was tough and no salt. That’s cooking 101!

Although it's a rather small restaurant, they really have a lot of flavor and portions. Their prices are good for the good food they offer, excellent service is very welcoming, they prepare your dishes quickly, and everything is delicious. Highly recommended. Visit it; it's on the second floor. (Original) Excelente lugar para almorzar si tú gusto es la comida peruana con esa influencia japonesa. Tengo que decir que me gusto mucho este lugar. El Costal Restaurante is a recommended dining destination that serves incredible arepa boyacence, which ranks among the most appetizing dishes I've ever sampled. The food is delectable, with a diverse menu that satisfies every palate. The restaurant itself exudes warmth and charm, creating a cozy atmosphere for guests to enjoy their meals.
