Minas in 1 day

If you only have 1 day to spend in Minas, we’ve narrowed down the top places you should check out to get the best experience of your time here.
Minas is a good base for exploring the rolling hills and rocky “sierras” of eastern Uruguay, with plenty of hiking, viewpoints and countryside drives nearby. Just outside the city, Salto del Penitente offers a scenic waterfall, swimming area and trails, while Parque Salus combines native forest with springs associated with the country’s best-known bottled water. In town, you’ll find a traditional plaza, historic churches and Cerro Artigas, a hill topped by a large equestrian statue with panoramic views. The area is also known for outdoor festivals and rural estancias that showcase local food and gaucho culture.
With favorites like El Artesanal de Minas Resto, Chivas Resto Ciclyng, and Penitente station - Sierra de Minas, we’ll make sure you don’t miss out on all the must sees. We even included some of our favorite food spots around the area, like El Artesanal de Minas Resto and Chivas Resto Ciclyng so you can get the best taste of Minas while you’re here. To see our full list of food recommendations, check out our best restaurants post. If you're traveling on a budget, you can check out our cheap eats post.

Nature & Wildlife Areas
Nestled in the stunning Lavalleja region of Uruguay, Salto del Penitente is a captivating destination that showcases nature's beauty through its impressive waterfall and serene mineral pools. This large state park offers visitors an array of trails that lead to breathtaking mountain views, small waterfalls, and inviting natural pools perfect for a refreshing dip. Adventurous souls will find plenty to do here, from rock climbing to horseback riding, making it an ideal spot for thrill-seekers.
Fabulous views. The drive is amazing. If you love the outdoors a must visit. Pack a picnic and spend a few hours.
Aida P — Google review
Our visit to Salto del Penitente was nothing short of an adventure! With six friends, we explored this breathtaking spot, and it definitely delivered on excitement. The highlight was the ropeway—an exhilarating ride that added a rush of adrenaline to the scenic beauty surrounding us. One thing to note: the network is unreliable, so carry cash for payments. While cards are accepted, if you need to do a bank transfer, you’ll have to connect to Wi-Fi from a nearby location where you book the ropeway. The staff handling the ropeway were very helpful, making the experience even more enjoyable. For food, the Parador restaurant is a great stop, offering a solid menu with good options. It’s the perfect place to recharge after your adventures. However, if you're heading to Agua del Penitente, be extra cautious—the road is slippery. Unfortunately, we witnessed someone take a serious fall, which was a stark reminder of how important it is to watch your step in these rugged areas. Despite the few challenges, this place is packed with adventure, making it a fantastic destination for thrill-seekers and nature lovers alike. Highly recommended for those looking for an exciting and scenic getaway!

One of the best nature spots in the country. Beautiful waterfall that runs through a rock channel into a pond with hills all around. Great spot for a picnic, to relax, or do some of the activities they offer.

With a beautiful lake and wonderful waterfall, Salto del Penitente is a gorgeous site to visit while in Uruguay. The hike to the different locations on the site is short, yet a bit steep to go to the waterfall. There are also zipline attractions in the site, though a very short glide.
Aya S — Google review
Beautiful place, full of nature, amazing landscape, great for adventurous people, beautiful sightseeing. Great for families, not accessible for people on wheelchairs. There's food and shelter. It has a couple of attractions like zipline and others. Not dangerous at all.

Great atmosphere and view of the town square. If you are going for a drink and the atmosphere this is your place however the food was not worth the money. The hamburger bun was falling apart on both meals and the meat was so over cooked we had to cut it with a knife.

(Translated by Google) Where to start... Upon arrival, we asked for a table outside which was visibly dirty. We asked for it to be cleaned, and the blonde lady at the counter, with a passive-aggressive attitude, responded that they were already going. Since the wait was long, we sat at another recently vacated table, which was at least somewhat cleaner. We were served by a very kind and gentle waiter, which was a positive point. (Reason for the 4 stars in Service) The place has a rustic aesthetic, but it gives the impression that they hide behind that to justify the lack of hygiene. The outside was littered with papers and dry leaves, clearly they hadn't been cleaned all day. The women's bathroom left a lot to be desired; I attach photos because it really was a disaster. The plates were chipped, and the ketchup and mayonnaise jars were clearly reused: they had an unpleasant smell and were dirty, especially on the lids. It would be essential that you at least clean them before using them again. The food was average. I give it a 7/10. The rustic potatoes were overheated and soggy. The goat, with very little content, although the flavor was acceptable (8/10). We ordered a dulce de leche and coconut cake, but what they brought was a stuffed pionono. It was delicious, but it was not what was advertised. We had to wait a long time for them to bring us the menu and then the bill, even though the place was not full and it was not high season. There is very little staff for such a large place (two floors and a patio), and the waiters cannot cope: they run from one place to another trying to attend to everything. We were there from 5:51 p.m. to 8:06 p.m. Unfortunately, we would not return. Lamentablemente, no volveríamos.

(Translated by Google) Very well located, it is nice to sit outside on the sidewalk, it has nice furniture and a view of the square. The waiter who served us first didn't even bring us the letter, but then another girl came and luckily she was very attentive and friendly. We ordered a sea board, super abundant, being 2 we didn't finish it. The potatoes were good, the fish was the highlight, but the tails had a lot of dough and they all came together. Still they tasted good. For food I give them a 3.5/5. I would recommend maybe giving aioli instead of soy sauce, but it's a detail.

We tried the breaded cutlet with provolone cheese, potatoes, and salad, and washed it down with a refreshing lemonade. I especially liked the delicious bread basket, which you'd never guess was gluten-free (we went without knowing and only realized because the waiter told us), and the ribeye milanesa, an excellent cut of meat with a delicious and very crispy breading. ☺️ I'm not giving it the highest rating only because, although the potatoes were very tasty, they seemed frozen (not bad, but not my preference), and because the lemonade was a little bitter for my taste. Even so, it's a great option for eating in Minas, I recommend it! ❤️

Nestled in the stunning Sierra de Minas, Penitente Station offers an unforgettable escape into nature. The ecolodges here are perfect for couples seeking tranquility, featuring spacious bedrooms with sliding doors that open to breathtaking valley views. Guests can enjoy the soothing sounds of birds and fireflies from their cozy beds or unwind on a large balcony equipped with hammocks and chairs.
If you are traveling through the Minas area this a great destination restaurant worthy of a detour. The location of the restaurant is stunning, as it sits upon a mountain ridge in the Uruguayan highlands. The hours listed are incorrect, the restaurant opens at 12 noon.

Rating: 4/5 El Penitente offers a unique dining experience with good food, a welcoming atmosphere, and beautiful views of the Uruguayan countryside. The restaurant is set inside an old train car, which adds a charming touch of history and nostalgia to the experience. If you look beyond the food and ambiance, there’s a legacy here that makes the visit even more special. It’s a lovely spot to relax and take in the scenery while enjoying a well-prepared meal. Definitely worth a visit if you’re in the area!

Sara provided amazing breakfasts over at the restaurant and on the weekends can provide dinner to eat over in the ecolodge. The food was great! Sara is also a wonderful, friendly host.

I loved this place. The waterfall was great and the little river and the rock outcroppings make it a great place for a picnic, to take photos or just to sit and enjoy the view. At the park they have 2 platforms that overlook parts of the waterfall and river and then there is a seep set of steps that you can take that winds down through the rocks down to the base of the waterfall. Going down is easy, coming back up is a bit harder :) Back at the top there are bathrooms and what looked to be a place where you could rent climbing gear. I would suggest not going in the summer because it will be very hot and very crowded. The best time for me to go is right before the height Summer or right after Summer. Be ready, the drive out to the park is a long one and the road is very narrow. It is best to drive slow as there are many blind turns and hills that you can not see around or over. On the road to the park there are several places to stop an take pictures. I suggest doing that. There are some amazing views there. Also there is a great restaurant that you will pass as you near the park. Plan enough time to visit not just the park, but all the area as well.

Lovely place! We had a delicious expresso and afternoon tea with treats including a basket of delicious homemade bread! The food and beverages looked fantastic and the view was great. The family has created an elegant restaurant out of old railroad boxcars. Highly recommend!
