Cotacachi in 1 day

If you only have 1 day to spend in Cotacachi, we’ve narrowed down the top places you should check out to get the best experience of your time here.
Cotacachi attracts visitors with its setting between the Cotacachi and Imbabura volcanoes and its relaxed small-town atmosphere. The town is known nationally for its leather workshops and shops, where artisans produce jackets, bags and shoes. Nearby, the Cotacachi-Cayapas Ecological Reserve and the crater lake of Cuicocha offer hiking, boat trips and highland scenery. Cotacachi also has a strong Indigenous cultural presence, reflected in its markets, textiles and local festivals.
With favorites like Peguche, Restaurante La Tola, and Especiales Carnes Coloradas "Esther Moreno de Unda", we’ll make sure you don’t miss out on all the must sees. We even included some of our favorite food spots around the area, like Especiales Carnes Coloradas "Esther Moreno de Unda" and La Casa Del Turista so you can get the best taste of Cotacachi while you’re here. They treated us like if we owned the place. They played ancient music instruments, told us the stories behind them. We enjoyed our visit a lot.

Its a museum by name only. Used to be one. But in there is a small library in the back straight ahead. Librarian said the overseer of the "Museum" quit so nothing to see or learn here folks. Sad really. Same as their botanical garden in town. No one to keep it

Cotacachi is a city located in the province of Imbabura, Ecuador. In this place you will find a series of beautiful landscapes, a wonderful climate, culture and very friendly and welcoming people. It is important to mention that in addition to this, its gastronomy is very varied in prices and flavors, so you will find something to suit your tastes and budget. This city is mainly known for its leather handicrafts, most of them handmade by the inhabitants themselves. In its surroundings there is a lot of vegetation, which is why it has been chosen as a destination for many foreigners which gives it a great cultural diversity. If you want to enjoy a quiet place with little pollution Cotacachi is the place for you.

A hidden gem of a historic water-powered grain mill, which has been beautifully restored by Milton, who is an amazing historian and guide. Well worth the visit to learn about the many diverse varieties of corn which he is helping to preserve from being lost as the local indigenous culture becomes more modernized. The old mill has been rebuilt and the grounds are nicely landscaped with flowers and fruit trees. A bit like stepping into the old world which we enjoyed very much.

Very lovely, peaceful site. Interesting historic acequia and mill, as well as of over twenty different types of corn grown in the Andes, and different ways of storing and using them. Milton is a knowledgeable guide, as he is a historian.

Situated near the town hall and city park, this beautiful Catholic church is a remarkable architectural gem for such a small city. Peguche, located just a short drive from Otavalo, is a village known for its weaving and the stunning Peguche waterfalls. These sacred falls are used for ceremonial bathing during the Inti Raymi celebration. The San Juan fiesta once featured ritual fighting between villages but now involves bathing in the waterfall and community celebrations. Visitors should show sensitivity and respect local customs. It's a place to walk, take photos, and enjoy family outings.
Small but great town with beautiful waterfall and walking trails. The staff consistently keep the grounds clean and were modernizing some paths and feature while my family and I were there. I would highly recommend hiking boots or some form of shoes with good grip as the waterfall makes the ground wet nearby. They also have a large open park for children to play. My favorite part of all was the cave at the top of one path. It takes you to the top of the waterfall fans a nice little area to sit and enjoy the view.

Nice waterfall. Nice looking campground. The walk is not long at all but be sure and buy the mosquito repellent and put it on. I did not and had many bites.

If you're on the hunt for an authentic dining experience, look no further than "Especiales Carnes Coloradas 'Esther Moreno de Unda'." This charming family-run establishment has been serving up traditional meals since 1902. While the menu is quite limited, featuring a single set meal that showcases their signature frittata and corn dish, the flavors are undeniably delightful. The prices are reasonable, making it a great spot for lunch without breaking the bank.
This is the original recipe and the best I have had in Cotacachi! Definitely recommend and I will absolutely return!
Matt F — Google review
The food here is very good but they have a very limited menu. You will want to go here only if you know you want the frittata and corn and the beer is very affordable. Our price to eat there for lunch for three was only $13. I am giving four stars for the food just because the menu is so limited but the food was actually very good.
Michael H — Google review
Definitely worth trying the carnes coloradas. While I was not a huge fan of the dish, I appreciated how everything came together and how attentive the staff was.
Camille M — Google review
The only traditional Carnes Colorados, lead by 3 generations women of the same family. You have to try this typical dish from Cotacachi.
Wendy V — Google review
Delicious food at a fair price. Just be careful with the bill, last time I went there they "accidently" charged me double. I wouldn't be surprised it was intentional. Other than that a great place to have a meal
Hugopaul2 — Google review
Delicious food! Only one main dish in the menu- a traditional entree. We don't eat meat but the sides are vegetarian so we finished it all! So yummy! Decently priced (not cheap) and service staff was kind and prompt
Alexandra D — Google review
If you want an authentic local meal, this is the place to go. There is only a single set meal complete which is served every day. This family owned and run restaurant has been in existence since 1902. With our limited Spanish, we were helped by one of the younger English speaking generation who was delightful.
Toots R — Google review
Good meat (carne colorada) it is a typical plate, but if you are a medium eater, better take a plate for 2 it is huge ! Good quality but service is not so good... it pretty expensive also, they think they are alone in the world.

La Casa Del Turista is a must-visit culinary gem in Cotacachi, renowned for its authentic Ecuadorean cuisine. Diners rave about the Locro de Queso, a delightful cheese soup that has earned high praise as one of the best dishes to try during your travels. The menu offers an array of options catering to both Spanish and English speakers, ensuring everyone can find something delicious.
After reading the reviews, I had to go with the Locro de Queso. I was not disappointed in the least! It was one of the best locros I’ve eaten. All around good food and experience. Their menu caters to both Spanish and English speakers. Lots to choose from. The only complaint is that the chairs were a bit uncomfortable. Still, this is definitely a place I’d bring family and friends!
Reema A — Google review
Very tasty traditional Ecuadorean food and one of the most popular restaurants in Cotacachi. I had a Locro de Papa which is a potato soup with cheese and it was the top two if not the best I’ve had in this trip to Ecuador (love that soup!). My partner had the Carne Colorada which is a very typical dish from the region and it was delicious as well. The menu is large in this restaurant but I recommend always choosing the most regionally typical dishes when you eat authentic Ecuadorean food at any restaurant. Save the ceviche and any seafood for when you visit the coastal regions.
Natalia G — Google review
Had the lomo salteado con legumbres. Comes with rice and fries on the side. Dish was plentiful and served piping hot. To much for one person. Service was prompt and friendly.
Bob S — Google review
Great establishment! The decor is top notch. Unfortunately the burgers did not have any flavor. One time I had a burger and it was great. The second time it was meh. The waiters speak English which is helpful. The milkshake was just milk/warm, not ice cream and it didn't taste good. It seems that everyone in Ecuador makes shakes with just milk and not ice cream. To differentiate themselves they should use ice cream and then I would give them five stars no matter what.

Restaurante La Tola offers a charming glimpse into traditional Ecuadorian culture, set in a rustic countryside bar and grill atmosphere. With its inviting patio adorned with lush plants, it's the perfect spot to savor hearty portions of classic dishes while enjoying live music. The menu features typical Ecuadorian fare, including flavorful red meat and the unique fanesca—though some may find it loses its charm after a few bites.

The setting at La Tola is that of a traditional Ecuadorian countryside bar and grill. Designed for sitting and enjoying food and drinks while listening to live music, the food is typical Ecuadorian cuisine. My steak was tasty, but as is typical, paper thin and rather tough. My wife’s fanesca, a dish served only during Holy Week, was interesting and tasty, but became a little boring after about six or seven bites. Basically the food “doesn’t excite”. Nonetheless, for those who like traditional Ecuadorian food in a non-touristic setting this would be a good choice.
