Woolacombe Beach is a picturesque stretch of sand located in North Devon, on the edge of the charming seaside town of Woolacombe. This three-mile long beach is renowned for its surfing waves and stunning views, surrounded by rugged cliffs and dunes. It has been consistently recognized as the UK's best beach, winning accolades from TripAdvisor for two consecutive years.
Gorgeous sandy beach & clear blue sea. Went for a paddle & it wasn't too cold actually. Last time I was here was over 30 years ago but it was still as beautiful as I remembered. Could do with a decent ice cream seller close to the beach but we found one after a short walk away from the beach. Great to see so many people enjoying the beach & the water

What a fantastic beach we have visited a few times now and it’s become a family favorite!!! Me and my son visited for a couple of days of bodyboarding some beautiful waves we parked in the national trust car park which is free if you’re a member or £10 if not still a bargain for all day … Definitely worth a visit I can highly recommend
Lee R — Google review
My favourite beach in England. Super clean, always lots of spots available away from other beach users. Perfect for surfers, families and dog walkers.
Jessica M — Google review
Long stretch of sandy beach. It was incredibly busy entering near Sandy Bar car park but a lot quieter if you venture a few minutes away. The sea was fairly rough when we went. There is a lifeguard on duty here. There are a good selection of rock pools here too, especially towards the Barricane beach end (though difficult to know where each beach starts and ends).
Adam S — Google review
Such a beautiful and well maintained beach. Plenty of parking options if you aren’t staying locally, National Trust members can even park for free now on Marine Drive! Board and wetsuit hire available on the slipway and there are plenty of food and drinks options available there too, as well as on the beach itself. Beautiful walks along the dunes to Putsborough or in the opposite direction along the coast path to a whole range of smaller beaches.
Steph G — Google review
Brilliant beach, great lifeguards. Huge beach which is well serviced with bins and ice cream vendors. Lovely sandy beach with areas for dogs off lead, on lead, and a no dog area.
Stuart B — Google review
Lovely dog friendly beach. Just went for the 2 mile walk each way and a well deserved ice lolly at the end. Beautiful sand dunes with little lizards. Clean and child friendly. Plenty of body boarders out too.
Claire S — Google review
A beautiful, long stretch of sandy beach that's perfect for a coastal walk or relaxing day out. It was busy around the Sandy Bar car park, but if you're willing to walk just a few minutes further along the beach, it becomes much quieter and more peaceful. The sea was fairly rough during the late evening when we visited, so probably better for experienced swimmers or surfers at that time. Overall, a lovely spot with plenty of space once you move away from the main access points. Highlights: long beach, Golden sand, enough car parking (paid), some beach shops near by to rent/buy equipments.

Barricane Beach, located a few hundred meters to the east of Woolacombe, is a small and secluded beach known for its unique shell particles that have traveled all the way from the Caribbean. During the summer, visitors can explore the sands and rocks with their dogs on a lead. The beach also features a seasonal cafe that transforms into a Sri Lankan restaurant in the evenings, serving delicious curries between 5pm and 7pm.
Gorgeous beach! We visited in the evening so it was quiet. We enjoyed a stroll along the beach looking for shells.
Tracey B — Google review
Nice little cove. Sand very gritty. Went there looking for shells that apparently wash in from the Caribbean but none to be had. Little cafe there too for a drink or something to eat
Riley H — Google review
Family friendly beach. Sandy and very few rocks or shells. Loads of spaces on beach esp during low tide. Rock pooling with crabs and small fishes. Two streams of water perfect for toddlers to splash about. Two toilets within a few mins walk, plus a few shops selling beach toys and RNLI life guards during holiday season. Water is cold so need wetsuits for body boarding. My children (10 & 8) had a smashing time. We came for a long weekend and came to this beach 4 days in a row. We’ll be back!
Maria M — Google review
A gorgeous secluded beach with a fab beach cafe. I collected some beautiful little shells from here! Great parking on the road above, although the maximum stay is only 4 hours!
Karen P — Google review
Absolutely beautiful and great fun for all the family, including dogs🙂 Paddle boarding is good but can't go too far as the current will potentially drag you towards the rocks. When the tide is out the rocks are great for exploring. Lots of rock pools, shells etc. Beautiful scenery. Definitely recommend.
Lisa W — Google review
Really lovely little beach and nicer than visiting all of the busier bigger beaches. There is a small takeaway cafe down there with sandwiches and other things. The rock formations down here and very picturesque and fun to walk and climb around. Definitely worth a visit. You can park on the road above if you manage to find a space otherwise you will need to walk a short while to get there.
Holly O — Google review
Such a wonderful small and quiet beach! I came here with my friends to search for sea glass. We found some creatures like crabs in the rock pools. The cafe seems nice, we wanted to try the curry but did not have time that day - but from what I heard from others sounds fantastic! I have always prefered this kind of pebble beach compared to sand beach but it will depend on your prefrence.
Amelia — Google review
Fantastic beach with rock pools and it's is also sandy, just down the road from the much more busy Woolacombe beach. It's does have steep stairs to go down and parking is very limited. Woolcomeb shops are around 10 min walk.

Nestled atop a cliff along the rugged Atlantic coastline, Combesgate Beach offers breathtaking views that stretch towards Hartland Point and Lundy Island. This charming, secluded beach is just a short stroll from Barricane Beach and is perfect for families looking to explore rock pools or build sandcastles away from the crowds. While access involves navigating a long flight of steps—making it less ideal during high tide—the golden sands beckon on sunny days for leisurely walks or delightful picnics.
Can't go wrong with any beach in this area, gorgeous
Steve W — Google review
Really loved this beach compared to some of the bigger busier beaches near here. Parking is a bit of a pain so you will have to walk a bit to get there but it's definitely worth it. We went in the evening and had the whole beach to ourselves as nobody else was there. Its a good beach also for sea glass hunting! Be aware that it is quite a few steps down to the beach so not suitable for those who can't walk much as they might struggle.
Holly O — Google review
Very clean, tucked away beach by the watersmeet Hotel. Tucked away and great for dogs. Very clean as are the rest of the beaches around here. Good for rock pooling and other activities. Lots of space at low tide and normally very quiet.
Olly S — Google review
This is by far the nicest place I have been in the UK! When the tide is out you can access the beach by the steps (so unfortunately no good for anyone with mobility problems) Once the seas out it leaves lots of little rock pools, some up to your thigh and the water is perfectly clear. Because of the rocks you can get a bit of privacy pretty much all around the edges. Beautiful beach, perfect for all, we thoroughly enjoyed exploring the rock pools, jumping the waves and building sandcastles. We will certainly be back!!
Jo B — Google review
Lovely beach with lots of nooks and coves to explore and discover. Good for surfing and bodyboarding as well as a normal beach day. Accessible at low tide via steps or from Woolacombe beach. 10/10 beach
Alex M — Google review
Lovely quiet beach even on the first weekend of Easter half term. Loads of room on the sand when the tide is out.

Awesome beach for surfing and rock pooling. Very quiet compared to the organised Woolacombe Beach. Only drawback is no dogs allowed!

Grunta Beach is a hidden gem located near Mortehoe village, offering a quiet and dog-friendly cove for visitors to enjoy. This picturesque shoreline is perfect for leisurely strolls, beachcombing for driftwood and shells, and capturing scenic photographs. While the rocky terrain may pose challenges for some, the stunning views and unique geological features make it a worthwhile destination.
Loved it. I should have worn my walking boots so I could have taken the pathway further. The scenery is breathtaking. . . Little bonus on the way back is a little coffee and cold drink horse box with super friendly guys serving a well earned drink / snack.

A hidden gem! Rock pools. Shells, pebbles and great views of the tide breaking on the rocks. Roadside parking (if you can get it) available on the road that runs parallel to it.
Graham T — Google review
Great for finding driftwood, pebbles and taking scenic photographs. Wonder recommend if you struggle walking or have problems with your ankles/legs as the rocks are quite difficult to walk on and the stair way down to the beach isn't particularly sturdy.
Jodie — Google review
No parking nearby. Much more protected bay than Woolacombe. Plenty of places to set up out of the wind. Child friendly but may struggle on descent with very small children.

Do not expect a big museum as it's a small shops inside the upper floor has all little trinkets, pictures , artifacts to see, which is the museum part. As it is free to enter, small donation if you want too. It is worth a visit. Our family never turn down a bit of history. I especially enjoyed reading the stories of the local people from. Back in the day. Their is a little church to visit, shop and local pub all near by. Great so a little stroll in this quiet little village The carpark is right next to the museum where you can pay by phone, card or cash :D very reasonable price

Morte Point is a moderate 7.7km circular walk with an elevation of 265m, taking around 2-3 hours to complete. It offers dramatic coastlines and the chance to spot sea life, particularly seals splashing in the waves. The route starts from Mortehoe and provides stunning views of Woolacombe beach. Accessible from Mortehoe or Woolacombe, the coastal path features abundant wildlife and opportunities to see seals swimming below the cliffs.
Beautiful place but not the easiest walk (some bits more difficult/ slippery due to stones). And we have been able to see some seals! Lovely circular walk and plenty of picturesque spots
Martyna B — Google review
Brstuful place! Really nice walk from the car park over the coast with a few seals in the water ❤️ Always wanted to see them in their natural habitat and wasn't disappointed! Beautiful views in overall!

It was a lovely peaceful walk with some outstanding scenery. If you have a dog that's not trained keep it on a lead there's loads of sheep wondering around. You'll see plenty of other walker's who are friendly and polite be the same it makes your experience more pleasurable.
Madden J — Google review
Lovely walk between the point and the lighthouse. Some steep steps but nothing to strenuous. Plenty of seats along route to admire the spectacular views. Closer to the point is a healthy colony of seals. Also found a good fishing mark after beating path through broken.. but be aware of steep drop-off and slippery rocks. Caught sizeable Bass (well my brother did, pure luck !) on almost the last cast of the day. Parking on the left as you enter Morthoe on Station road if paying by RingGo you need to stand outside the postoffice across the road from the entrance. 4hrs at £6.40. 2 unisex public toilets that are grim but better than some. Some catering outlets in the village + the post office.
Robin G — Google review
You need to park at the parking (at the entrance of the village), which is quite busy so worth to go a bit earlier. Also there is a ~30mins walk to the point and also a bit of hiking, but it IS wonderful. I have spent 2hours (comfy) there with retour walking and photos and posts and rest at the very point between the rocks, but of course if you want, you can walk around on more trails and places all day long. ;) It is a must see!! I want to go again for longer time for sure.
Anett Á — Google review
Beautiful rocky headland with stunning views. Both rolling hills and steep inclines. Lots of floral and fauna. A nice tea shop in Morte Hoe to finish off the walk.
David A — Google review
Lovely costal walk, lots of views and some sheep. Make sure you keep your dog on the lead. Some parts were quite steep so may be difficult for some.

Mortehoe Fish & Chip Shop is nestled in the heart of a picturesque coastline, offering a serene atmosphere for couples and an array of activities for families and groups. The village provides miles of walks and dog-friendly beaches, making it an ideal destination for travelers with furry companions. Visitors can enjoy exquisite beaches, bustling seaside resorts, water sports, and quiet dinners.
Pleasantly Surprised – Don’t Always Believe the Negative Reviews! After reading some of the negative reviews, I was a bit put off about going here, but it was the only chip shop near our campsite (other than the ones in town), and we didn’t feel like walking all that way. So we thought, “What the heck, let’s give it a go and see what happens.” First off, the dogs outside were absolutely adorable and so well-behaved. One of the previous reviews complaining about the dogs honestly sounded like it came from someone who just isn’t a dog lover. The comment about a child tripping over the dog? Well, maybe the child should’ve been watching where they were going — after all, it’s the dogs' home, not ours. The young person who served us was super friendly and couldn’t have been more helpful. We asked about paying by card and she was really accommodating. As for the food — I had chips, a steak pie, and curry sauce, and it was bloody lovely. My friend had fish and chips and said hers was great too. I do wonder if some of the bad reviews were more about the dogs or atmosphere than the actual food, which is a shame, because our meals were spot on. Also worth noting: I had fish and chips in St Ives recently that cost me £14, and honestly, the food at this place was so much better. And no, I’m not saying the St Ives food was bad because of the price — I know it’s costly down here — but this little spot really surprised us in a good way.
Michael M — Google review
Truly epic fish and chips! Great service and cooked fresh 👍 I have to say this place needs an award 🏅needs recognition for the quality 👏👏
Craig B — Google review
Not only is the owner an absolute legend, but the fish and chips here were divine – hands down the best I’ve ever had. Perfectly crispy batter, fresh flaky fish, and chips cooked just right. I’ve heard the lobster is second to none too, so that’s next on my list. You can tell this is a family-owned business run with pride and passion – the service is warm, the atmosphere is welcoming, and the quality speaks for itself. An absolute gem of a place and completely worthy of recognition. Top drawer.
The J — Google review
Lovely tasting fish and chips and big portions too. They are served in a bag which we didn't like, we drove 5 minutes back to our campsite and they were cold. There is no insulation in the bag. £30 for two fish and chips with peas. Such a shame, wrapped in paper or in a box would have kept them warm. Sadly, we won't be returning.
Paul S — Google review
Appalling honestly the worst £30 fish and chips ever! We are used to exceptional F&C in north Dorset far from the coast. We are used to exceptional gluten free batter, which is crispy and thin. There were no GF options. This really was so disappointing. The batter was sloppy/wet. The chips were the same. They didn't even bother to skin the fish which is why the batter was sloppy and wet. I have never had battered fish and chips without the fillet being skinned!! This feels like a complete seaside scam because great fish and chips is not rocket science. Avoid and find a genuine offering because this is not and yes this is a genuine review. If anyone thinks this is good they really need to sample quality fish and chips.
Lawrence P — Google review
Vile fish and chips! My dad had food poisoning from here. The cod he had was full of thick batter and hardly any cod. He had to small thin pieces. The fish was very oily and the chips were cold. We waited too and ate them close by! We will not be getting anything from this chip shop again. The service wasn’t great either. Plus very overpriced for a small portion of fish and chips. The mushy peas were not hot either. I would not go here unless you want food poisoning!
Emma S — Google review
Although we did not sample the fish our sausage and chips was lovely. As per other reviews perhaps in boxes rather than bags would help keep the food a little warmer and be easier to eat out or back at a campsite, of which I'd say makes up the larger audience for this take away. Kids boxes a little expensive for what they are. Obvious smaller portion, but yes you do get a cheap drink cup and lollypop. Next time I think we'd just order a standard normal meal. Only one size of portion of chips, no issues with that but thought I'd mention just to make others aware. Taste was nice, not greasy. Scored low on atmosphere as there wasn't really any. You order at a window, loiter outside or pop into the pub opposite to await your order. If ordering with someone else perhaps tell them this, as my order came out a little while before my friends and therefore was already cooling down. If in the area again will most certainly visit again.
Dan T — Google review
Stopped here on the way back to our caravan and the food didn't disappoint. The cod was delicious, chips were tasty and plentiful, just good quality no nonsense fish and chips. When at the seaside, what more could you want.

This has to be one of the best places to grab some food, or bask in the sun with a cold drink in Woolacombe. We have returned many times having tried most other local establishments. Bit of a wait for food when it’s busy, but the food was fantastic and reasonably priced given the location and situation. Really good vegan options and my wife still talks about the Thai curry. Also a great selection of interesting beers. Highly recommend.

We were recommended this bar by a friend and in honesty I thought from the name it might be a bit young for us, however I couldn't have been more wrong. We have just returned from a wonderful 3 night stay . Amazing views from our room, extremely comfy bed, fantastic food & a beautiful hotel. It is pricey but you get what you pay for. But by far the best thing about this hotel is the staff. Each and every member of staff is attentive, professional but also friendly and approachable. We will return as soon as possible.

Undoubtedly a superb location. Maybe we had an "off day", but the room we booked was not the room allocated to us. Restaurant was fully booked, again fine, but other hotels would inform you ahead of time. For the price we were expected to pay, this is not good value and we didn't end up staying there. Service we experienced was not good.
Chris P — Google review
We came for a celebratory afternoon tea and the staff went above and beyond to ensure we had an enjoyable day. The views from our location were also amazing and made it all the worthwhile as well. Would definitely consider staying a night or two based on our experience today.

We stay here 3-4 times a year and have done so for the past 8 years. We have just returned from our third stay this year alone. The hotel has undergone substantial refurbishment over the winter with new carpets, furnishings etc and is always spotlessly clean. Ania, Helen and Francesca are the friendly and efficient reception team who will do everything they can to make your stay enjoyable. The impeccable Teresa and Lûdek in the bar and restaurant continue to provide 5-star service. It is expensive, some items crazily so, but if the weather is good, you won't find a better location in the UK.
Richard L — Google review
Great location — but that’s about it. If you fancy spending a lot of money to feel like you’re staying in a care home prematurely, this is the place for you. The room was average at best — I’ve stayed in better budget hotels. Ours didn’t even have a window, which was very different to how it was advertised. Check-in was frustratingly late at 4pm, and none of the rooms were ready until then. The staff were odd and quite dismissive, creating an awkward atmosphere — apart from the lovely lady on reception on the morning of the 29th. She was the nicest part of the whole experience. The indoor pool is also very run down and absolutely freezing! Wouldn’t recommend.

This is an incredible hotel and we had an almost perfect stay. The terrace room next to the restaurant was very special with stunning sea views, very clean and comfortable. The breakfast and evening meals were delicious and the staff were kind, friendly and accommodating and really made the experience very special and went above and beyond our expectations. When they heard from us that the meal on our first evening had been disrupted by something which was no fault of the actual team themselves whatsoever they were extremely kind and very responsive to our feedback. It was clear everyone works very very hard, seem to take pride in their work and I hope they know how lovely they are! We had a few really nice chats and it didn't feel too forced or like it was a massive chore. The waiting staff, reception staff and everyone we talked to were polite, genuine and caring. The outdoor seaview pool was one of the highlights of the experience and we were really surprised how peaceful and quiet it is despite being just round the corner from Woolacombe. There are beautiful walks right on the doorstep and even in the middle of the summer holidays we found a secluded cove to relax in. The indoor spa facility was also tranquil and we had an awesome afternoon tea on the terrace too. Massive compliments to the chef for all the food we were lucky enough to eat during our stay. Thank you also for offering me other options as a vegetarian that was much appreciated. The atmosphere in the hotel was informal and relaxed despite it being luxurious and well appointed. Also I have to say as a parent of young children having some child free time I really appreciated that the families who were guests at the same time as us as they were particularly considerate and sweet. They seemed to also be having a lovely relaxed and peaceful holiday.enjoying everything the hotel and surrounding area have to offer. Thank you very much to the whole team who work in the day to day running of the hotel for making us feel so welcome. You're doing a fantastic job and I hope you have a good rest of the season.

Thank you for reply. First of all you are missing the point, I hope your policies do not state to be rude to customers. At one stage you staff said this conversation is over, who talks to their customers that way. You also say you were busy maybe that is the case, but the restaurant was very empty. Secondly no one actually told us where to sit even after some asked. They were also not polite either if there were this situation would have never happened. As I said we were absolutely fine if we got something wrong and sat in the wrong place to move but it was the way we were spoken to that was the problem. The reason we were given was that all the tables were reserved. All we asked your staff member to do was be polite and be welcoming and I can assure you she did neither. I also completely disagree that at any point any of us raised our voices. Even after saying that we felt unwelcome your staff continued to ask us to move rather than saying sorry if she came across that way and resetting the conversation. We only decided to you leave when you staff said that this conversation is over and just leave. I am very disappointed that not only were your staff member was unwelcoming but on top of this they said we raised our voices. I can assure you we did no such thing neither were we rude in any shape or form, all we kept asking was not be felt unwelcoming. We just wanted to have something to eat and drink. Appalling attitude! We decided to go in the restaurant as the location was great. Some of our family members who are disabled went in first and manage to get in and sit at a table. They asked where they could and were directed to the restaurant. We arrived later and as soon as we say down, this women came telling us you can't sit down here these are reserved, even though the restaurant was completely empty and no signs. We would have been happy to move but the way we were approaching was not very welcoming. All we would have expected was a sorry and we would have moved to wherever. In face what we got was this conversation is over and leave! A very disappointing attitude.

Nestled in the charming coastal village of Mortehoe, The Beachcomber Cafe is a delightful spot that captures the essence of seaside dining. With its inviting terrace offering stunning views of the sandy shores, it’s an ideal place to unwind after a day filled with beach activities like surfing and hiking along the picturesque South West Coastal Path.
One of the best breakfasts I have had in a long time! We had the Large Devon Breakfast, everything was cooked perfectly, drinks were great and the staff were friendly, attentive and helpful. Would highly recommend coming early and grabbing a table!

A good strong cappuccino. Friendly welcome by staff, even for our wet and bedraggled dogs. Both breads were very fresh. Tasty tuna melt. Homemade curried lentil soup perfect on a drizzly February day!

Absolutely love the beachcomber cafe - it’s always a go-to whenever we are in Devon. It can be difficult to get a table so just be wary of that if you are really hungry!! We were sat near the door and lots of people were queuing to get a table which wasn’t the best atmosphere but in the end they were told to queue outside which made a big difference. Food here is super yummy and at a very decent price - so much variety for all different diet types!

Stayed in Mortehoe for the week off peak popped into the beachcomber for food as most places was shut for winter. Food first class one of our party had gluten free cream team it was first class. Great food great view over the beach and sea. Staff polite and very attentive. This is a little gem in Woolacombe and a credit to the owners. Will definitely be back. Dog friendly as well.

Me and my wife came here for lunch and all I can say is PERFECTION!!! I had the crab sandwich. The crab is locally caught and was full of delicious crabmeat. Not sickly! Certainly one of my favourite food venues anywhere! The food is sublime, the juices are amazing, the location is fantastic and the staff are always so lovely. Great work! So we had lunch for £30. We were full and didn't have to dress up....drink alcohol..get a taxi...blah blah.Evening meals can do one! It's our new going out....doing lunch!!!...and much cheaper!

OMG, amazing find! We live in North Devon, we are always on the beach or in the sea at Woolacombe, and this is the first time we've been in. Such a lovely atmosphere and the food and drinks are so good, the whole family commented on how amazing their brunch was. Very friendly staff, so relaxed. Beautiful start to my wife's birthday. Thank you!

Just stopped here for a bite to eat as literally next to the beach. Had some cream and jam scones along with fresh crab and salad and also the crayfish baguettes with salad too. Everything was freshly made including our 2 smoothies. When we come back to this lovely seaside town, we'll be back to have another lovely special.
