If you only have 1 day to spend in Ogmore-by-Sea, we’ve narrowed down the top places you should check out to get the best experience of your time here.
Ogmore-by-Sea is a small coastal village known for its wide sandy beach, rugged cliffs and rock pools, popular for walking, picnicking and surfing. It sits at the mouth of the River Ogmore, with views across the Bristol Channel and easy access to the Wales Coast Path. Nearby attractions include the medieval ruins of Ogmore Castle and the Merthyr Mawr sand dunes, one of the largest dune systems in Europe. The area has a relatively uncommercial, laid-back feel, appealing to visitors looking for scenery and quiet coastal escapes rather than big resort facilities.
With favorites like Ogmore By Sea Beach, Ogmore Castle, and Hilary and Iain's Kitchen, we’ll make sure you don’t miss out on all the must sees. We even included some of our favorite food spots around the area, like Hilary and Iain's Kitchen so you can get the best taste of Ogmore-by-Sea while you’re here. Ogmore By Sea Beach is a lovely west-facing beach with ample parking for a small fee, making it convenient for visitors. The area offers a vast expanse for walking and taking in the fresh air, although some parts may be rough to navigate. While the water may not be as clean as expected, the beach provides a great place to relax and enjoy the surroundings.
Ogmore-by-Sea Beach is a fantastic spot for anyone who loves rugged coastlines, golden sands, and breathtaking sea views. The combination of expansive beaches, dramatic limestone cliffs, and fascinating rock pools makes it a great place to explore. The fossil-rich rocks and ever-changing tides add to its charm, while the nearby ruins of Ogmore Castle and its iconic stepping stones offer a unique historical touch. It's a perfect destination for walking, relaxing, or simply soaking in the coastal beauty. The Wales Coast Path provides stunning views, and dog walkers will love the wide-open spaces. Just be mindful of the strong currents if you're thinking about swimming. Whether you're after a peaceful escape or a scenic adventure, Ogmore-by-Sea is a must-visit on the South Wales coast!

Visited just after a storm so sea was wild but lovely. Sun was shining and windy but exhilarating. Highly recommended to blow the cobwebs away

This is a place I visited often when I was younger and I was so pleased to see it is still relatively unspoilt. There are great coastal walks in both directions and also along the estuary through the dunes. Please be aware of the strong undertow in the river and only cross when the tide is well out. Appears to be good for surfing and sea fishing. There is horse riding available and it's great to watch the horses gallop along the beach and gambol in the surf.

Beautiful beach with an interesting rock formation! I went with the dogs and was able to park in the car park nearby which was easily accessible and not far at all from the beach. Lovely area lots of space on the beach. I did go on a Monday morning so it was very quiet which for someone with anxiety was great 🤣. The dogs loved it and it was nice to see the area. Did see some people on horses in the distance on the beach which was lovely to see but just as a warning in case you take your dogs 🥰🐕. Overall lovely beach and nice and quiet!

It was very windy the day we visited, making it too cold to fully enjoy the beach. Despite the weather, the beach offers breathtaking views of the coastline and remains a stunning destination with its expansive sandy shores and dramatic rock formations.

nice for a frolic around the rock pools. there is an interesting pebble beach. quite an untouched and undeveloped beach which has its own raw charm to it. not as developed with amenities as other nearby beaches such as porthcawl or aberafan but a lovely area nonetheless

Good evening, beautiful Ogmore Beach. The sun dips low, painting the waves in gold, The breeze whispers softly across the sand, And the sea glimmers like a dream untold.

Ancient Ruins
Ogmore Castle, dating back to 1116, offers a glimpse into Norman architecture through its ruins and remains. The historic site is complemented by dog-friendly footpaths and information boards. Visitors can explore the early 12th-century fortress and enjoy the picturesque surroundings. While caution is advised due to limited parking and potential flooding in the car park area, crossing the stepping stones can be an adventurous experience.
What a beautiful place! Very quiet and peaceful too. You feel like the time had stopped there. We did a picnic as looking at the sunset, which was such a treasure time. It may be busy for weekends.

Great place to visit, parked next to river for free. Had a walk around the ruins and then over the stepping stones and followed the path to the right that leads you to a bridge over the river. Please be careful on the stepping stones as a lady slipped and fell in the river and I helped her husband to get her out. You can walk to the left but it only goes as far as the two rivers meet a few hundred yards down.

I think you can get in before 10.00am, I arrived at 9.30 and the gate was open. The road down to the castle is single track and badly potholed. Park just in front of the castle on the riverside which can be prone to flooding. The parking and castle are free. The ruins are quite small but nice to walk around and good views across the river. I couldn't walk across the stones on the river as the water was a little too high but if you there are nice walks and horses on the other side. Well worth a visit as it's close to the main road.
David L — Google review
Love visiting this place, taking a wander and some times crossing the water via the stepping stones too. Parking can be tricky with only enough space for about 10 cars, take it slow down the lane as there are lots of potholes and often dogs and horses too.
Amy E — Google review
If you like visiting castles then Ignore Castle is a worthwhile destination. Free entry and parking are a bonus. It is a maintained ruin, so once you have walked around the walls and looked in the old chapel there isn't a lot more to do, other than cross the river on the stepping stones and take a few photos.
Andrew S — Google review
Been today to the castle ruins with the family and our dogs. The road running down to the castle is full of very big / deep pot holes. Parking is by the river just past the castle, but it does look like you are about to drive into the river. The ruins themselves are nice to walk around and take about 30 mins to walk around. Went to the river where you can walk across the stepping stones to get to the river walk on the orherside. Don’t cross as there was no way we would have made it with the dogs without falling in. Personally wouldn’t bother with the state of the road to get to the castle.

Little hidden gem. Was driving home and cane across this place. Perfect little place to stop for a stretch and have a look around. Owned by a wealthy lord. can see a good amount left of the building. I would suggest to drive cautiously as the roads become severely bumpy 🤣

Beautiful place. Free entry and free parking . By the stepping stones. Rich in history.

Cafe
Nestled in the charming coastal village of Ogmore-by-Sea, Hilary and Iain's Kitchen is a delightful café that promises an unforgettable dining experience. After a scenic stroll along the beach, this eatery is the perfect pit stop for lunch. Their menu features generous portions, like the scrumptious cheese and ham melt served with salad and chips—ideal for refueling after your seaside adventures. The atmosphere inside is cozy, though outdoor seating offers a refreshing breeze on warmer days.
Had a lovely lunch today, would highly recommend, Hilary always very thoughtful, lovely selection of home made cake, will definitely go again.

Food is very good here in general. Though the cost of beer is eye-watering. No draught, all cans or bottles (which is fine), but £6.95 for a can of Cruzcampo when you can buy 4 in any supermarket (let alone wholesale) for around a fiver takes the edge off a lovely evening. I understand a mark up (100 or even 200%) but 500% is frankly, taking the rise!

Delicious food, the sausages were amazing! Outside was a nice breeze and lovely. They were a bit busy, so food take a bit longer to arrive but not much of a problem when you are waiting with an astonishing view to the sea!
William B — Google review
Stopped in for lunch as we were walking along the beach. Bit of a trek from the actual beach itself but well worth it! The cheese & ham melt comes with a choice of white or brown bread, it also comes with salad and chips! The sandwich was HUGE and the ham/cheese was really packed in, overall it was delicious. We sat inside, there were tables outside but it was a bit hot - you can sit a table of 6, 2 x tables of 4 and a table of 2. So if it’s busy I’d imagine it can be tough to get a seat. Definitely recommend to anyone looking for some lunch down this way though!

Arrived at 1830hrs to be told they were no longer taking table orders but we could have Take Away. No problem, placed an order for 3 portions of chips and some gravy. 45 mins and I'm still waiting outside for any food to arrive. Now I'm not in a rush really....but how long will I have to wait..... 50 mins in the end...no apology or acknowledgement. When we opened the food up just down the road, we found an amazing mix of anaemic chips clearly not cooked, some done well and others cooks for so long they literally melted the polystyrene packaging.s Let's just say we won't be rushing back👎

Ordered 4 jumbo sausage and a chicken breast to take away it cost £13,99 for 4 small sausage a tiny chicken breast food was ok but nothing special to warrant paying that price

We went for sunday lunch for fathers day. it was lovely food i would highly recommend. Its very small inside so make sure you book, as they were turning people away who were walking in.

Most beautifully presented, tasty food we've had in a long time. The Pea and Ham soup was delicious.
