Orselina in 2 days

If you only have 2 days to spend in Orselina, we’ve narrowed down the top places you should check out to get the best experience of your time here.
Orselina is a small hillside village above Locarno, known for its panoramic views over Lake Maggiore and the surrounding mountains. It’s home to the Madonna del Sasso sanctuary, one of the region’s most important pilgrimage churches, accessible by funicular from Locarno. From Orselina, you can take the cable car up to Cardada and Cimetta for hiking, walking trails and scenic viewpoints. The village offers a quieter, more relaxed base while still being close to the cultural events and lakeside activities of Locarno and the wider Ticino region.
With favorites like Ristorante La Chiesa, Santuario della Madonna del Sasso, and Ristorante Bar Lungolago, we’ll make sure you don’t miss out on all the must sees. We even included some of our favorite food spots around the area, like Ristorante Funicolare and Ristorante Bar Lungolago so you can get the best taste of Orselina while you’re here. To see our full list of food recommendations, check out our best restaurants post. If you're traveling on a budget, you can check out our cheap eats post.

Piazza Grande in Locarno is a charming town square featuring cobblestone streets and historic buildings. The square serves as the focal point for various events such as film festivals and food fairs, making it a lively hub of activity. Surrounded by old palaces and adorned with harmonious porticos in the Lombard architectural style, Piazza Grande offers a picturesque setting for visitors to explore.
We came in the summer from Ascona to Locarno by local bus to explore its famous Piazza Grande and the surrounding old town. Our idea was to have dinner somewhere in the mazes of the old town. In the evening the magnificent Piazza was already quite empty, so we could admire it very well. The Piazza is bordered by rows of colorful three-story houses. Narrow streets go off in different directions. Nice compact old town.

Piazza Grande is the central square in old town Locarno. It's a pretty big square adorned with beautiful Italian style vivid color houses. A famous summer film festival is held here. Place is cool to walk and sip a drink in one of outdoor cafes, however it's deserted at night

It’s an amazing place specially during Locarno Film Festival when placed with an incredible audience

Piazza Grande in Locarno is a beautiful open square surrounded by colorful historic buildings. The lively atmosphere makes it perfect for walking, relaxing, or sitting at a café. Spacious and suitable for families and visitors anytime. Truly worth a visit.

A cute Square in the center of Locarno. Beautiful colorful historical buildings.
Davina D — Google review
During the film festival, the square was the centerpiece.
Irma G — Google review
Just a great place to relax and to enjoy a nice meal, ice cream or coffee. There are beautiful parks nearby and there are plenty of restaurants and cafes for any tastes.
Beat O — Google review
Please note my comments are based primarily around our film festival experience within this space. It’s early August and the Locarno Film Festival is in full flow, the centrepiece is the Piazza Grande, where up to 8000 people per night gather to watch movies on one of the world’s biggest screens. It’s an experience you are unlikely to forgot, to share those moments with thousands of strangers, it’s kind of amazing and incredibly cool. I love the environment here, who says cinema is dead when so many gather to watch films both big and small. Loved it each night as bats made their way across the screen, maybe they were watching.

Madonna del Sasso is a Roman Catholic pilgrimage site in Locarno, Switzerland, established after the Virgin Mary reportedly appeared in 1480. The Franciscan Santuario della Madonna del Sasso church, perched on a rocky crag above the town, was consecrated in 1487 at the spot where the apparition occurred. Visitors can take a scenic twenty-minute walk through a lush ravine or ride a funicular for stunning views of the church and Lake Maggiore.
We were visiting Locarno with friends and came here on a sunny summer day. Thankfully there weren’t many others so we were able to enjoy walking around. This church is amazing for its location and design. The interior has been well preserved, maybe restored. There are some 3D depictions of biblical events that are curious. The museum was closed so I can’t comment on that. Beware that there are many steps down (and up!) from the funicular stop. I definitely recommend spending time here. Cool spot.
Karl P — Google review
A beautiful Catholic church that dates back to the 15th century, and the site of a Marian apparition. You can access it by funicular, or there's some street parking near the funicular station - otherwise it's a bit of an uphill walk from Locarno (I think ~20min). Nice views of the lake, and very ornate decorations in the church, with a particularly nice oil painting from the 19th century of Jesus being carried from the cross.
Michel L — Google review
Beautiful church, magnificent views. Could be a bit crowded but definitely worth it
Amit O — Google review
Take the funicular up to here from the town below, trip takes about 5 minutes. On exiting the top station cross the road and walk down the path to get to the church. Be aware that it is quite a steep and long path down, it can get a bit tiring one the way back to the station especially when it's hot.
Ian F — Google review
Great views. You can take the funicular or walk the stairs from the lake.
Luis C — Google review
An amazing church. Lovely wee museum as well. A bit of a walk up and down but we used the funicular rail. Worth it.

Free and beautiful. Totally worth a visit, if you are already there. Cannot complain at all! Note: If you want to see the museum, it is free, but check the opening hours!

Restaurant
The terrace of Ristorante Funicolare offers a stunning and breathtaking panorama of Locarno and Ascona, making it the perfect spot to enjoy the beautiful scenery. Despite Switzerland's reputation for high prices, this restaurant offers reasonable rates. The staff is polite, professional, and provides excellent service. The food is delicious with good quality options available. Even if you only stop by for a quick coffee and slice of cake, you'll still be treated to an astonishing view.
I ordered the menu of the day, which included a well-dressed salad, tender rabbit meat with a side of potatoes, and a ball of gelato for dessert. While enjoying this meal, I appreciated the amazing view from the terrace overlooking Lake Maggiore and the Santuario della Madonna del Sasso. The view was breathtaking, and I highly recommend this place. The waitress was very professional.

Beautiful view from the terrace and on a clear day you can’t get a better view of Locarno and Ascona. The prices are reasonable and when you visit Switzerland you know it is more expensive than across the boarder. The service was nice and polite and very professional and the food was good

Best Shrimps or Seafood Risotto ever! Really. My wife and I came back after two years and they serve still an amazing risotto. We will come again and again. Thank you Lungolago

Opens till late… we arrived late and this was one the limited options we had… we had caprese salad, buffalo pizza and pesto spaghetti… food was not bad considering the type of restaurant
Mohammed Q — Google review
We invited 8 people to the restaurant and were embarrassed by the terrible service and the unprofessional attitude of the waitress and waiters. To begin with, we ordered drinks and a bit of munchies to start the evening. We had come to this restaurant having seen an amazing appetizer platter being served. When I requested that platter for our table, we were informed that we couldn’t have it. I asked another waiter about it and he said that we could have it but rudely said that we would have to pay for it. Obviously. The drinks weren’t served together with some arriving 15 minutes after others. Our waitress forgot to give in one order and I had to go to the barman and back to our waitress to finally receive it , 30 minutes after the others. The same thing happened with the dinners we ordered. Some arrived 10 minutes after others. Our waitress forgot once again to give in two orders and by the time that food came, the others had finished eating. To top it off, aside from a bottle of wine, we ordered jugs of tap water for the table, which is quite common in Switzerland. I had to ask numerous times and wait for 10 minutes each time I asked for water. Some staff were quite hostile and openly complained about a client at a different table within our earshot . One staff member was great but everyone else was aggressive and unprofessional.
Corbin M — Google review
Did not like the pasta, tasteless overcooked and full of water (not sauce). Also 40chf for a pasta is too much.
Marie S — Google review
This place is more like 3.0 than 4.1. the food is not amazing, everything kind of expensive and the waiters always trying to squeeze a bit more money out of the customers. Feels like fast food gone wrong
Ni E — Google review
We were in a rush to catch our train. The waiter promised the food takeaway would be ready in 5 mins and it came in 5 mins! The fungi pizza and carbonara were very tasty and the portion was big. Will definitely go back if we visit Locarno again, hopefully sitting down and enjoy the lake view next time!
Vinny Z — Google review
We didn't like the food. Chicken tasted strange, felt strange and wasn't really warm. Shrimp Risotto was tasteless and also not warm. And we had to wait really long for food. EDIT: I lowered score - even water was added to a bill. Unbelievable!

Fine dining restaurant
Mediterranean restaurant
Ristorante La Chiesa is located next to the Santa Trinita church in Locarno Monti, housed in a beautifully renovated and redesigned old rectory. The restaurant offers a veranda with stunning views of the lake, city, and a lovely garden. Guests can enjoy an Apero menu featuring small dishes while choosing from the daily menu. The staff is attentive, providing excellent service.
One of the best meals we’ve ever had. From the moment we entered the building Dimitri & the rest of the team provided incredible service. They were all so polite, professional & kind throughout our dinner. Honestly if pressed it would be hard to say if it was the food or service that made for such a wonderful experience. I highly recommend the venison as a main dish & scallops for appetizer. You will not be disappointed.
Mike R — Google review
The food and service at this beautiful restaurant are excellent. It’s as if all of the nicest and most talented foodies got together to work in one place. Favorite dishes were the scallops, venison and trout. Highly recommend La Chiesa for an incredible dining experience.
Danielle G — Google review
This was one of the best food experiences I’ve had. Super delicious food and everything reasonably priced. We paid about 170 chf per person including the matching wines for four courses. A nice experience was the Apero menu were we could get some very small dishes while choosing the menu of the day. The staff was also super attentive but to a little degree too much because we were the only guests in the restaurant but I think this is personal preference. We had some lobster claws with broccoli cream and a small piece of pork with smoked potatoemousse as a apero. Followed by a veal tartare and then a egg with a salsola soda salad. Both starters were absolutely delicious. The two main courses were some ravioli filled with pumpkin and sultanas with some bacon and pecorinofondue and pear gelee. The second main dish was a veal steak with tartufo polenta and another cheese fondue. Dessert was a tart tatin which was matched with salted caramel cream and an excellent dessert wine.

Very laid back place. Excellent food and fine wine on the menu. I enjoy the lunch since it's not so crowded and the view is tremendous. Definitely will return.

Sublime! Excellent experience, where everything was just perfect. Fine food made out of delicious regional ingredients. Staff was very very friendl and the atmosphere is just right (inside or outside: both magnificent). The restaurant is attached to a church (that's why la chiesa). Book in advance. I don't know you, but I will definitely return!

What not to like? Very complex and delicious food, it's the whole experience you need to have - not just several best items on a menu. I definitely recommend to have their tasting meny along with wine pairing. Delicious and so different. Different wines complement each course and adding a layer of complexity. Absolutely recommended. Will definitely come back!

Perfect Spot to Relax and Enjoy the Lake A fantastic place to spend the day! Beautifully maintained with stunning lake views, delicious blu restaurant, clean facilities, and plenty of space to swim, relax, or enjoy a drink. The mix of lake access, pools, and green areas makes it ideal for families or couples. We loved the atmosphere!

Fantastic place. As a traveller from the UK this provided a welcome place for relaxation, some sun, shade (helpfully!) and a great swim and slide. Really great setting beside the lake with beach and lake access. Large grassed areas with deckchairs or sun loungers, An Olympic height diving platform and aqua climbing (a first for me!) in a separate pool. A large outdoor pool great for lengths but also a fantastic temperature for a hot day. A heated outdoor pool that was like a bath on a hot day and children's splash play pool. Indoors two large pool areas. Finally 4 fantastic slides / flumes. We tried 3 but the vertical drop of the 4th saw us chicken out. A bit pricey but worth it!

Amazing place! On a sunny day it’s the perfect summer spot. So much fun for all ages — slides, jumps, and plenty of water activities both indoors and outdoors.
Hamid D — Google review
he cleanliness of the place is good. Unfortunately, there are very few shaded areas and swimming in the lake is not possible, which we weren’t aware of beforehand. In addition, there are limited food and drink options, with long queues at the available stands. Considering that swimming in the lake is not allowed, I also found the price to be quite high.
Melissa K — Google review
Well organized lido with a lot of swimming pools and one of them with hot water. There is also a diving area with trampoline and also a local restaurant which serves burgers, salats & pizza. The entry price for an adult is only 13 CHF. Totally worth the drive from Zurich considering the huge temperature differences ☀️🔝

I love this place , very neat and clean Its a fun distention for the family More than 5 swimming pool with different sizes , small aqua park inside Shaded pools , and nice restrant as well Negative point : 1 bottle of water cost 3.5 euro ( you can imagine the rest ) Also the entrance ticket cost 20 euro approx which is very expensive compared to the other lido in Switzerland

We were in Locarno for the triathlon and the entrance fee was included so we chilled before the event. The place is really nice, it feels luxurious for the price you pay - which I think it’s 13 francs. The structure is very modern and the areas themselves are clean and inviting.

With Full-Body scrub and Full-Body Relaxing massage. We really enjoyed our day there. Phones are not allowed inside - so, no pictures:)

Gorgeous spa! We spent more than $200 for our family of 4 to have all day access to bit the hot spa waters and the water park next door. The spa area is beautiful with incredible views of the lake. The water park facility (LIDO) is great for families and includes access to the lake. I recommend buying the combo ticket that includes all of the above if you have kids with you. Otherwise, just do the natural saline spa area!

We came to Locarno specially to visit Termali. We loved the pictures online and how it said it was inspired by the caves. We booked the private spa experience with mud wrap and massage. Everyone was really friendly. One of our masseuse didn't speak English but the other one did and did well to communicate with us. I loved the little pools. As someone who has autism and ADHD, and struggles with sensory issues, I found the spa very relaxing. I loved the low lighting and the different pool areas with different temperature water. It was clear how the area was inspired by the caves. Loved this. We went on a Saturday but it wasn't very busy. Would definitely come again and book a suite. Everyone was so welcoming. EDIT: in response to the owner, I have removed the image I took from the phone/WiFi part of the spa where it did not mention that phones were not to be used. The other photos were taken in the private spa suite where there were no other guests visible. We were not informed that we couldn't take photos in the suite as it was a private suite.

A relaxing experience..what i did not love is the troubles with tickets to Lido. I bought co.bined ticket to slides, Lido and spa and sauna, and twice(!).I had to come back because my tickets did not work, first to the slides, than to Lido. Would be good if this gets fixed, while it did get sorted out on my visit, it spoiled the impression quite a bit - once you prepay for every entrance the main expectation is that it would work.

So...where I can start : I think will be nice spend little bit time here and take rest after long drive. 5 Stars I give to reception desk, because its really friendly. But after ..... on spa side outside its not enough place for people for relax. bedchairs...chairs... Staff which is responsible for look if everything has just intrested like security guard in prison looks behind the door just WHO USE THE PHONE ! sorry, but my feeling was totally down..... and if I saw how this people coming to customer and want say something about phone-totally unprofessional. Without english or german and angry to customer. But the best is area where you can eat or drink something... you pay expensive entrace and this area is totally dirty. Nobody clean, people move all stuff from previous customers, put on the floor, because they dont have place to eat or drink. Prices in ,, buffet ,, are extrem! Staff totally unfriendly and unprofessional. If you order something they make so look on you and if I ask something I get tottaly angry answer in Italy lang. I live 12 years in Switzerland but I never had experience like this....
