Valparai in 1 day

If you only have 1 day to spend in Valparai, we’ve narrowed down the top places you should check out to get the best experience of your time here.
Valparai is a peaceful hill station in the Anamalai Hills, known for its rolling tea estates, cool climate and misty, forested landscapes. It lies within the Western Ghats, a biodiversity hotspot where visitors may spot wildlife such as lion-tailed macaques, gaurs and a wide variety of birds. Scenic viewpoints and reservoirs like Sholayar Dam and Aliyar Dam, along with nearby waterfalls, make it popular for drives, short hikes and photography. Its relatively low-key development compared with larger hill stations adds to its appeal for travelers seeking quiet and nature.
With favorites like Carver Marsh Statue - Kavarkal, Sholayar Dam, and Mary Land Home Stay, we’ll make sure you don’t miss out on all the must sees. We even included some of our favorite food spots around the area, like Mary Land Home Stay so you can get the best taste of Valparai while you’re here. Dams
Sholayar Dam, also known as Upper Sholayar Dam, is a 66-meter tall structure built in the 1960s as part of the Parambikulam Aliyar Project. Located in Tamil Nadu amidst the Western Ghats, it forms a reservoir and offers breathtaking views of the surrounding hills and lush greenery. The dam serves as a serene retreat for travelers seeking respite from urban life. Visitors can enjoy panoramic views from several viewpoints and explore a park nearby.
A scenic and serene destination surrounded by lush forests and misty hills. Sholayar Dam is one of the lesser-crowded spots in the region, offering stunning views and a peaceful atmosphere. The drive to the dam is beautiful, with dense greenery and occasional wildlife sightings — including deer, monkeys, giant squirrels, and a variety of birds if you're lucky. Ideal for nature lovers and those seeking quiet, offbeat places. The area around the dam is great for photography and short nature walks. Best visited early morning or evening for cooler weather and better chances of spotting wildlife. Limited food options nearby, so plan accordingly.

Very scenic and peaceful place. Big dam with beautiful views and cool breeze. Good spot for photography and relaxing. No entry inside the dam, only view from outside. No proper facilities, so better carry water and snacks. Worth a short stop if you’re in Valparai.
Abdul V — Google review
Very scenic dam on the main road. When we reached there at 2 pm it was full of fog an beautiful mix with dam lake. Aftee 1 hour it cleared and could ger further scenic view. Parking on roadside available. Bathroom option is there but not clean by one private small hotel. Lots of local snack options. Kids park was closed when we went.
Abdul R — Google review
Visited in Nov2025 when the dam was full and one of the crest gates was partially open. Entrance on top of the dam was not allowed, and the adjacent park for children too was locked. The road from Valparai to the dam itself is very beautiful and offers many beautiful spots along the way to stop and savour the views. From here Athirapally waterfalls of Kerala is just about 50kms.
Ravi A — Google review
"This dam is amazing! The views are stunning, and the people are super friendly. But what really makes it special is the surrounding area - it's perfectly located near other incredible spots, making it a great base to explore. Definitely worth a visit!"
Sooraj — Google review
Around 65years old dam at approx 66m height surrounded by scenic views with park. Visitors are not allowed inside as it seems some shutter works are going on. Also not much water but a views are good and it will be nice during monsoon I believe. Worth for a short stop as we may not be able to spend more time here. Also no basic amenities available here like restrooms so plan accordingly.
Ramesh K — Google review
Located on the roadside only. One of the biggest dams in India. The view was very beautiful when they opened the shutters. A children's park is located nearby. No entry fee. When we visited it was closed because of heavy water flow. Lots of small snacks shops available near the dam. Only VI and BSNL network will work there so if you are airtel or jio user have some cash for purchase. People are allowed to go to the upper dam by walk. Check with the locals for the exact way. The Google map location is incorrect.
Vinothkumar M — Google review
Sholayar Dam is a significant tourist attraction near the town of Valparai. Since the dam has two reservoirs, there is an Upper Sholayar Dam and a Lower Sholayar Dam located at a little distance away from each other. The dam is surrounded by magnificent verdant hills. The best time to visit the Sholayar Dam is between the months of June and September. You must visit the dam during morning hours or evening hours, not in the afternoon. Sholayar Dam is about 20 km away from the Valparai town. It takes about 30 minutes to reach the dam from the town. Sholayar Dam, being the second deepest dam in Asia, is a popular tourist attraction near Valparai. You get a fantastic view of the dam and reservoir from the roadside. A drive on this road will prove to be a memorable experience. You may be disappointed to visit the dam during the dry seasons because of less water, but the view is still quite good. But if you happen to see the dam when there is enough water to open the gates, the view is simply unbeatable. The green plantations and forests, the blue water bodies and the beautifully built dam create a pleasant scene. The place on the banks of the reservoir is great for picnics.

Lookouts
Nallamudi Viewpoint is a popular tourist spot in Valparai, offering stunning panoramic views of the valley, mountains, and waterfalls amidst tea fields. Located just 10 km from the town, the narrow and patchy road to the viewpoint can be challenging to navigate due to oncoming traffic. However, the scenic drive is particularly breathtaking during the monsoon season.
The views from Nallamudi View point is absolutely beautiful. The place is not hard to reach in the non-peak hours of early morning, if you reach just in time for Gate opening which is 9:00am. We had a delay of 20 mins for gate opening due to Elephant herd movement close to view point, hence forest guards requested us to wait. The Roads: Surely they have some potholes in comparison with other roads leading to Valparai but not that difficult for a decent rider or driver and the scenery is so beautiful that, you won’t feel most of those bumps from potholes. During rush hour it might be tricky to give way in some of the narrow stretches and might take a little more time to navigate and to reach the place. Entry Fee/Parking: They take ₹50 (0.42 British Pound / 0.57 USD) as entry fee and it’s taken by the Forest range officers stationed there. Parking is available at the entry gate for bikes and about 100mtrs down for Cars and Tempo Travellers. Accessibility to Viewpoint: From the Entry gate it’s about 500mtrs flat walk and last 100mtrs slight ascent nothing anyone can’t do, as it’s a simple walk for anyone who doesn’t have any problems with walking 😀 Families with elderly and small kids also easily made it to the view point. There is a small elevated rooftop view point with seating which gives 180• view of Anaimalai hills. Best time to visit: Start by 8-8:30am from Valparai town and reach by 9-9:30 to the entry gate for a less crowded and a peaceful visit. Later the crowd might be more especially on holiday or weekends. So, it’s a must visit place if you have a morning to spare in Valparai and it was worth the 2hrs spent for the same. We travelled on Diwali holiday of 2025.

Scenic experience of nature. Just a valley view. There is a temple. That's quite and beautiful. But the view point visit not worth. Have entrance ticket ₹50.00 entry ₹30 conservation ₹20 total Rs.50 per head. No camera fee now. In the view point need to walk approx one kilometre. In way saw many plastic waste. I don't know what the conservation they meant.Ticket cost maybe change as per authority dicision. Visiting this view point need to travel very bad road. Brocken and bumby roads. And not awesome view. Not recommended. Worst of time.

Nallampattu River Point is such a peaceful and beautiful place to enjoy nature. The river view and fresh air make it a nice spot to relax. But getting here is a real struggle because the roads are in terrible condition. The water tank is also poorly maintained, and there seems to be hardly anyone taking care of the place. It’s a lovely location, but with better maintenance and proper roads, it could be so much better.
DINESH K — Google review
A great view when we walk through tea garden towards point. If climate is clear, more than two water falls are visible on opposite hill. A must seeing point.
Hemant S — Google review
Excellent view of Anamalai and idli falls opposite side which is in Kerala . The tribal hamlets in the midst of dense jungle is worthy. Surrounded by tea estates the picturesque view is stunningly panoramic. The forest officials are friendly to answer all our doubts of animals tribals and the risk they face when encountering animals.Entry Ticket is Rs.50. Tea stall in entrance have biscuits, coffee, tea, snacks, tea powder and cold lemon soda.
Thomas R — Google review
Nallamudi Viewpoint is a beautiful spot with some bad road leading to it, about 12km from Valparai. Opens at 9 am; could have been earlier... The small hike to the viewpoint through a tea estate is worth the 180 degree beautiful views over the valley and wooded hills.
Ravi A — Google review
Nallamudi View Point offers a beautiful view of the mountains and tea estates - definitely a nice spot for nature lovers. The surrounding scenery is peaceful, and there's even a small temple near the entrance that adds a pleasant touch to the place. However, the road to the viewpoint is in very poor condition, which makes the drive quite uncomfortable. Parking is also hectic, especially during weekends or holidays, as the area gets crowded and lacks proper space management. The entry fee is ₹50 per person, which feels a bit high considering the limited facilities available. Overall, it's a decent spot to visit once for the view, but the road and parking issues can make the experience less enjoyable

In Valparai, every viewpoint has its own uniqueness. Here, you can witness more than four waterfalls, making it one of the most scenic spots.

Nirar Dam, located in Valparai, is a stunning destination nestled within a dense forest. The dam offers breathtaking views and the opportunity to witness a strong water flow during the monsoon season. Visitors may also have the chance to spot wild animals such as bisons and elephants in the area.
Beautiful place... Open till 4pm.. but they will allow till 4.30..Need to get permission at the entrance. Drive inside the forest.. roads are good. There is small tea shop nearby run by a family.

The place well within the anamalai tiger reserve. It's nice place to visit. It's good to see when the spillway and shutter is open. Visit is only allowed between 9am and 4pm. There is tea shop near the dam where an aged couple will serve u with hot tea and snacks.

Waterfalls
Chinna Kallar Falls is a breathtaking waterfall nestled in the midst of verdant greenery and dense forests. It's best to visit during the monsoon season when the waterfall is at its most magnificent. This location ranks as the third highest rainfall receiving place in India, earning it the nickname "Cherrapunji of Tamilnadu." To enter, visitors must obtain an entry ticket at the forest checkpost for a nominal fee.
A beautiful waterfall located deep inside the forest in Valparai – a must-visit for nature lovers. Though bathing and swimming are not allowed, the serene atmosphere and scenic beauty make it worth the visit. You’ll need to park your vehicle on the roadside and walk around 300 meters to reach the falls. Snacks, juice, and food are available nearby, which is convenient for visitors. Clean toilet facilities are available for both men and women. A peaceful and refreshing spot to enjoy nature at its best!
Nithin N — Google review
It’s small beautiful water fall. We need to get entry ticket from forest department costs 30 per head and 80 per vehicle .we need to drive around 7km inside forest and it’s a beautiful experience .the check post will close around 3pm. We need to walk 500 meter from parking to reach water fall. The water is too cold and your legs may freeze as it is coming directly from forest . You have a local restaurant is available there lunch and other items.
Akhil N — Google review
A nice falls but only for photoshoots. Bathing is prohibited here. We need to trek for about 600m to reach the falls. There's a hanging bridge, that's also good for taking photos. We need to travel up to 5 kms from the check post to reach the falls. They charge 50 per head. You also cross chinna kallar dam while traveling to falls.
Richards S — Google review
This is about 500 meters away from main road. A small waterfall with clear and cool water. Can take bath as the water flows out making a shallow river. Lots of stones around. I visited the place in summer and hence the falls was thin. Beautiful view around
RAJU J — Google review
I visited Chinnakallar Waterfalls in Valparai during the summer. It’s a peaceful place surrounded by thick forest and tea estates. But during summer, the water level was low, so the waterfall was not very strong. Still, it was a nice spot to relax and enjoy nature. Before going to the waterfall, you need to buy an entry ticket at the forest check post, which is about 8 km before the falls. For a two-wheeler, it cost Rs. 50 per person. After a few meters on the road, another forest guard will stop you to check the ticket again. So make sure you keep it safe and don’t lose it. The ride from the check post to the waterfall is beautiful but a bit narrow. Drive slowly and enjoy the view. Once you park, there is a short and easy walk through the forest to reach the falls. The walk is pleasant and full of greenery. There are no shops nearby, so it’s better to carry water and snacks. Also, don’t throw garbage—keep the place clean. I think this place will be much more beautiful after the rainy season. I plan to visit again when the water flow is strong. A good spot for nature lovers and a quiet break from busy life.

A small India Post office surrounded by lush greenery in Chinnakallar, known for its heavy rainfall and serene tea garden landscapes. A Remote hill-side post office in Chinnakallar, Tamil Nadu
Balaji R — Google review
Very good place. But crowdy near falls. Go here only if you are ready to climb 30 stairs and 500 mts of walk as very old people can't walk to that place. Awesome spot. Thanks to officers there who helped to park vehicles safely and in a well manner. More LEACHES will be there and they will get you 99%
Vivek A — Google review
This place is inside the forest and we need to pass the forest checkpoint to visit this falls. We can take our own vehicle and visit this place. We initially tried to go during a weekday(Friday) and the guard at the checkpost asked us to come over the weekend as it is closed on weekdays. Later we found that it is open all the days and that they need more people as the guard needs to be present when we visit the waterfalls. The waterfall is really good, you are not allowed to play here as the current is high. You need to walk around 500/750 meters from the parking spot. Overall, a lovely place.

Nestled in the serene hills of Valparai, Balaji Temple is a must-visit for anyone seeking a blend of spirituality and stunning natural beauty. Surrounded by lush greenery, this traditional temple offers breathtaking views that enhance its tranquil atmosphere. While reaching the temple requires a bit of effort—an uphill walk of about 850 meters from the parking area—it's well worth it for the peaceful experience it provides.
A clean and serene temple inside a private estate. Got to walk a little, but an easy one for Middle Aged ppl. The road to the estate from the main road was bumpy and single lanes. Requires good driving skills or an automatic car for tackling when two cars enter from either end. No photography allowed inside the temple.

Carver Marsh Statue - Kavarkal is a must-visit spot for nature enthusiasts in Valparai, located on the way to Valparai from Pollachi. The journey to this statue offers enchanting views of the surrounding forests and abundant wildlife sightings. Situated around 3,500 feet above sea level on the Anamalai mountain range, this mesmerizing hill station is home to a diverse range of endangered species. The statue commemorates G.A.
The Carver Marsh Statue at Kavarkal is a peaceful and neatly maintained spot that honours Sir William Carver Marsh, one of the key figures behind the development of the Nilgiri plantations. The statue sits in a calm, green area surrounded by fresh air and quiet surroundings. One of the best parts of this place is the beautiful hillside view you get from around the statue. The open landscape, greenery, and gentle breeze make it a refreshing stop for anyone visiting the area , and there are small stalls nearby for snacks and tea.
Bas!laa — Google review
This place offers a breathtaking view for visitors, with each season presenting a unique visual experience. However, my concern about this historical site is the poor maintenance of the Carver Marsh statue. The government should take necessary action to renovate the surroundings of this statue, which would add more value to this location. During winter, this area becomes one of the most mist-covered zones, creating a magical atmosphere. If you visit, you’ll enjoy a cool, refreshing view and have a wonderful time with your loved ones. It’s a great destination for travelers seeking a memorable experience.

One of the best spot to feel the nature, fully covered with lush greenery in the mansoon with mist covered spot. High wind and cool spot beautiful.
Saleem P — Google review
This is a place where you can witness mist and clouds drifting by, creating a truly beautiful and scenic view. It's known as one of the 'mist zones' along the Valparai road, specifically situated at a hairpin bend. Travelers in their own vehicles should park away from the hairpin bend. This is because buses and trucks, often carrying many passengers and goods, find it extremely difficult to navigate the turn accurately without reversing or struggling with a single torque.
Arunbhaarat — Google review
Wow, just wow. Wonderful view of the fog covered mountains and the tea estates from here. Fog was covering so nicely at this place that we stopped our car, got down and took lovely pictures. Though the photos don't give justice, our feeling was exemplary. Loved this point in Valparai

This statue represents a person of immense historical and cultural importance, someone who deserves the utmost respect and recognition. However, it is truly disappointing to see the current state of the place. The surroundings are poorly maintained, with litter, empty alcohol bottles, and various waste materials scattered around. Such negligence not only spoils the beauty and significance of the site but also shows a deep lack of respect for the individual the statue commemorates. Authorities and visitors alike should take greater responsibility in preserving the dignity and cleanliness of this location, ensuring it reflects the honour and reverence that the person truly deserves.

Beautiful view point. You can have a look at the majestic aliyar dam from the hair pin bend up above and it still looks so huge. Also we spotted one rare nilgiri tahr on the way from 8th hair pin bend to 9th hairpin bend on a friday when the traffic was very less.

Aliyar Dam view point Aliyar Dam is located in the foot hills of Valparai. It is about 65 kilometers from Coimbatore in Valparai Mainroad. From Pollachi is about 25kms. and From Valparai is about 40 Kms. is located above 918 feet (280 m) from the Mean sea level on the Anamalai mountain range and in the Anamalai Tiger Reserve. It stands majestically with Green Spread Mountains and forest all around. In Aliyar Dam there is a park, garden, aquarium, play area, Boat House Park. Aliyar Dam, which is 81 meters high, was built between 1959 and 1969 across the Aliyar River primarily for irrigation purposes. Currently, water is released through three sets of sluices or canals - Pollachi Canal, Vettaikaranpudur Canal and the river sluices. In 2002, a project was commissioned to generate hydroelectric power. This project consists of a series of dams interconnected by tunnels and canals for utilizing the waters of the Parambikulam, Aliyar, Sholiyar, Thunakadavu, Thekkadi and Palar rivers, which flow at a range of elevations, for irrigation and power generation. The project is a terrific illustration of engineering skills. Aliyar Lake receives water from the Upper Aliyar Reservoir through the hydroelectric power station in Navamali and the Parambikulam reservoir through a contour canal. The Aliyar Dam is another attraction for those in the Pollachi region. About 25 kilometres from Pollachi, Aliyar Dam is located. It serves as the enclosure for a storage tank as well as a little amusement park, a playground, a garden, an aquarium and boats. Suggested Duration 1 to 2 hours What to Expect This is the perfect spot for a family picnic. A number of buses leave Pollachi for Aliyar, and they run frequently. The Anamalai Tiger Reserve Complex lies along the path, and it is home to lion-tailed macaques, wild boars, and a variety of other animals. Tips 1. Bring snacks and water with you because there are no food or drink stands at the dam. 2. There is no shelter or seating at the dam, so bring a chair or blanket to sit on.

Incident is of October 2023 I’m a solo rider and have stayed at many different places, but this particular stay felt quite shady and unprofessional. When I reached the property around 6 PM, a large group also arrived at the same time. The owner seemed more focused on them and hurriedly handed me the keys, saying he’d complete the check-in process later. I planned to head out for dinner around 8 PM and checked at the reception to see if he was available — he wasn’t. When I returned around 8:30 PM, the reception was still unattended. I eventually went to bed around 9:30–10 PM. Surprisingly, at 10:30 PM, the owner came knocking on my door saying, "We don’t allow guests without completing the check-in process," which I found quite inappropriate. I never asked him to skip the check-in — he was the one who delayed it. To make things worse, while I was checking out, he asked to use my phone, saying he wanted to leave a review from it — which felt completely unethical and wrong. Would not recommend this place, especially for solo travelers. The experience was uncomfortable, and the owner's attitude was unprofessional and money-minded

I had the worst experience during my stay here. The room had not working TV, and even getting hot drinking water was a struggle. The basic facilities that any guest expects were not provided. When I asked for help, the staff response was very poor and not at all professional. The service quality does not match the high ratings shown online. Overall, I am extremely disappointed and would not recommend this place to anyone. Definitely not worth the money

Totally a cheating. There are so many websites for this single hotel. I booked for 3 persons 5000 rupees. Also no facilities. Mentioned Breakfast free in their website but not even provided water. I have asked to take photos and collect the bill. I will take action with suitable section and file the cheating case in different district to give them more pressure to know the pain of paying people.

The hotel management does not respect guests who book rooms online. They even tell us to ask Agoda to cancel the booking. They charged extra money for an extra bed but refused to provide it. When we asked about it, they said, “Call Agoda and get it from them. We will not give you the bed.” Very unprofessional behavior. Do not choose this place – Maryland Home Stay is not recommended.

We are 4 adult and 3 kids of 10 years. Two rooms only booked by my travels agent. Rooms are pathetic, oily, no bed sheets. No heat waters, no AC, no water bottle, near by no restaurant. You have to walk 900M to eatables. No intercom. Not suitable and recommend for family stay.

Went there after seeing reviews. Rooms are clean is the only positive. No views from room. Service is not good. No food providedby them. Better to look for other rooms nearby. Not worth for the price paid that too in valparai.
