Penrith in 1 day

If you only have 1 day to spend in Penrith, we’ve narrowed down the top places you should check out to get the best experience of your time here.
Penrith is a historic market town on the edge of the Lake District, making it a convenient base for exploring both the North Lakes and the Eden Valley. Visitors can wander its traditional streets, see the ruins of Penrith Castle, and visit nearby historic sites such as Brougham Castle and Brougham Hall. Ullswater, one of England’s most scenic lakes, is a short drive away for boat trips and walking routes. Good rail and road links add to its appeal as a practical and less crowded alternative to the central Lake District towns.
With favorites like The Kings Arms Hotel, Bella Italia - Center Parcs Whinfell, and The Cross Keys Inn, we’ll make sure you don’t miss out on all the must sees. We even included some of our favorite food spots around the area, like Bella Italia - Center Parcs Whinfell and Huck's so you can get the best taste of Penrith while you’re here. To see our full list of food recommendations, check out our best restaurants post. If you're traveling on a budget, you can check out our cheap eats post.

Center Parcs Whinfell Forest is a woodland resort offering various lodging options, including lodges with hot tubs. It's located near Penrith, making it convenient for exploring the Yorkshire Dales. The resort provides activities for kids of all ages and has numerous playgrounds and swimming areas suitable for young children. Additionally, there are on-site restaurants and opportunities for cycling and walking in the surrounding area.
Is Center Parcs expensive? Yes. Is it worth the money? Absolutely! We stayed in a 2 bedroom Woodland Lodge in Badger Wood, it was lovely. Spotlessly clean, super comfortable and a perfect location. We had red squirrels on our deck every day, ducks coming to see us and a variety of other birds too. So peaceful and relaxing. The activities were well run and great fun. The pool was spotlessly clean and very warm. We all had a wonderful time!

Just back from an amazing 5 days here with the family. There was 15 of us in total aging from 3 years old right up 77 and we had 3 lodges. This was the 1st myself and my 6 year old daughter had been and the pair of us had the best time, it was non stop. All the staff were lovely and very patient. Would 100% recommend here and will definitely be back.
Francesca B — Google review
We stayed for a full week at moorland view, and the lodge was decent at best. Few cobwebs here and there but overall the place was clean + good dog supplies. However the same can’t be said about the facilities… The more times I have been here the more I’ve realised the facilities at centre parks has declined, and it’s getting to the point where it’s clearly noticable. Classic example is the subtropical paradise, where on the rapids there used to be jets of water that used to spray out, but wasn’t there this time. The overall temperature of the place aswell had decreased significantly and it was so bad I had to go outside to the steaming outdoor pool + the hot tub every few times I went down the slides. Forgot to mention construction was being done at the top of the pool which ruined the whole relaxing vibe, which I felt like could have been avoided. Oh another thing is only 4 of the hairdryers work, and with 30 people coming out at once, it’s not the most pleasant experience. Anyway moving away from that, another letdown was the bowling alley. A few years ago the bowling alley used to have massive lanes and bowling shoes, but now they removed the shoes and the alleys feel alot smaller. Aside from all of that it’s a great and beautiful place to go to still, but I highly recommend going to a different centre parks in the next few years as I know whinfell can do alot better.

We absolutely loved our holiday at Center Parcs, almost everything was perfect. Firstly, as you would expect the location is amazing. The kids loved the wildlife which was everywhere you looked. There are so many activities and things to do that you are never bored, however some of the activities are over priced. Every single member of staff we interacted with was so friendly, they were great with the kids and made you feel welcome. The swimming pool area is brilliant, so much to do and you can spend hours there. Check in and check out is easy too! The only very minor issue we had was in relation to the lodge upon arrival. The beds were not made…. Clean bedding was left but not put on so we had to make our own beds. For what is the equivalent of £350 a night I expect the beds to be made (they would in any hotel for that price). The bedding isnt particularly comfortable or ‘homely’ but we could get over that. Also, the bins weren’t emptied upon arrival which I firmly believe they should be. All in all, a really good holiday and we will almost certainly go again!
Adam V — Google review
We stayed for 7 nights but in hindsight 4 nights would be just right. We stayed in a 3 bed woodland lodge but if we came back I'd opt for something newer/higher spec. The main areas were well cleaned but few cobwebs in the bedrooms. The kitchen is not very well stocked and the oven not great. We brought an air fryer which would be my top tip! Also some blankets - the bed covers feel cold and damp so putting a blanket down really helped. The staff here are all amazing - really helpful and friendly without exception. My son was unwell on the first day and they rearranged his activities without question. There's so much to do here but book your activities in advance as soon as they become available - we did: Segway experience, paddle boarding, aerial adventure, football factory, badminton, interactive squash, pickleball, bowling and pool. All instructors were excellent. We hired bikes for the duration of the stay and the kids loved the freedom of cycling around site - we visited the bird hide every day too. The swimming pool was partly closed which was disappointing and it's not as warm inside as it used to be but the kids loved all the slides and the waves too!
Lindsay M — Google review
Great time as always and everything fine. Felt the accommodation was cleaned minimally hence the 4 stars. Essentials done but floors dirty and when you have crawling babies, that’s an issue. Otherwise nice experience as always.
Rob B — Google review
3rd time here and we absolutely love it . It's just nice to get out doors with my grandchildren and not worry about cars although you do need to be alert as there are a lot of cycles about and the pathways are shared. They cater for all age groups and the dining is especially good. I hope to be back there in the very near future
Peter H — Google review
Our lodge (Fell View) was in need of freshening up, but was otherwise fine. Shame there's so much building work going on - the lodges over by the Outdoor Activities (Meadow view) are being gutted, with heavy plant machinery going back and forth all day and shattering the peace. Also, the top section of the pool is closed for renovation (all slides and the outdoor pool still accessible), as was the indoor pool in the spa. Great that the place is being updated, but it felt like it was everywhere (including inside the butterfly centre). Had we known there was so much building work going on, we would have booked somewhere else.

Acorn Bank is a National Trust property famous for its extensive landscaped gardens and charming watermill. Although visitors are unable to explore the house, there are delightful fruit and walled herb gardens available to wander around. The courtyard cafe offers open-air dining with delicious sandwiches and pasties at reasonable prices. It is an excellent location for families looking to spend time outdoors, with a nature trail, fairy houses, old mine trails, and bird-watching hide.
A lovely place to visit if you're in the area. There isn't much of the house open, which is sad. There is lovely gardens and a great walk along to the watermill and gypsum mine. The cafe was closed, but they had self serve tea/coffee for a donation.

Wonderful place to spend a few hours, lots of nice walks through the forest area and around the well kept grounds, plus a good tearoom and of course the nice book room where most of us come out with more than we went in with. Definitely a place we would revisit.👍

This is a fabulously understated place to visit, an active mill in some beautiful scenery, some excellent walks and interesting history, lots of places to enjoy and reflect on the surrounding beautiful landscape
Adrian D — Google review
An absolutely beautiful place, the gardens are truly spectacular and so calming. The greeting staff were lovely, great with our kids and the walk to the mill was very achievable. The 3-star rating relates to the cafe. In the middle of the six weeks holidays they had no kids meals Mon-Thurs (despite them being advertised) and they had nothing gluten free except a ore-packaged rice cake. I cannot comprehend why an organisation as hit as NT who charge pretty hefty membership fees cannot standardise a basic menu that caters to basic dietary requirements - and to not accommodate kids also seems a bit ridiculous. Otherwise the cafe was very clean, and the toilets were accessible.
Rebecca S — Google review
Disappointed. You can go into 3 rooms of the main house. The entrance hall, which is underwhelming. Another room which is empty. And the book shop. The grounds out front are nicely kept. The gardens are just vegetable patches. There’s a bit of a woodland walk behind it. In comparison to other sites, this was a massive let down.
Gary M — Google review
Up hill and down hill walking. Lots of bluebells and wild garlic out at the moment, water levels low due to lack of rain. Lovely walk around
Liz L — Google review
Staff were really, really friendly and knowledgeable- had a lovely chat about peonies with one of the garden team. Woodland is lovely and the gardens (and bees) were really interesting
Alistair M — Google review
Not too much to see in the house, but the gardens were good, an extensive range of rhubarb & apple trees. Nice walk around the outside of the grounds to the restored water mill, again not working for lack of water.

Larch Cottage Nurseries is a charming pescatarian restaurant located within a beautiful nursery. The gardens are filled with an impressive variety of plants, shrubs, and garden ornaments, creating a tranquil atmosphere for visitors to enjoy. The on-site cafe/restaurant, La Casa Verde, offers delightful Italian-inspired dishes and a lovely balcony seating area adorned with wisteria.
Quite an amazing place, really! We knew it would be enjoyable to visit on a lovely sunny day, on our way home from a short break in the Lakes/Dales, but weren't prepared for just how nice it would be - or how extensive. A great place for the hard-core gardener or someone who wants some extra statuary for their grounds, but for us with our little back yard it was just fun to walk around - and we did get a couple of plants and some trailing lobelia. Luckily we'd had the foresight to book a table in the restaurant in advance. We hadn't realised that the extra part of the garden with ticketed entry is only open Wednesday & Sunday afternoons (we went on a Friday) - hence the confused look when we tried to pay to get in! - but there's more than enough to spend a good amount of time enjoying anyway.

Wow. What a hidden gem. Fabulous food and refreshments served in the cafe. Plants and shrubs a plenty at reasonable prices. Great place to walk around. Lots to see round every corner and wall.

My wife and I both like gardens, although my wife is the gardener. In researching our visit to Penrith, Larch Cottage appeared to be a place for us to visit. We weren't disappointed. The nursery itself is marvellous, very extensive, and much diversity in plants. There is also a fabulous restaurant as well, although we only had a pot of tea on our visit. All of the teams were very helpful and friendly. We were lucky in that we were able to visit on a garden open day, where their own private garden is open to the public for a £5 donation. Again, it was absolutely lovely with its own chapel and pond. Smashing setting. The whole garden, nursery, and restaurant were very eclectic as well as extensive, and is one of the best nurseries we've visited, and we've visited lots. Well worth the visit, and we thoroughly recommend it to all.
Stephen B — Google review
A lovely nursery, with lots of character, holding a wide range of interesting plants and trees for sale. Also a lovely restaurant offering exceptional food. Well worth a visit.

What a fascinating 'must go' nursery, for all who love unusual things for their garden. My unusual purchase was a 'Cedar of Lebanon' (Cedrus Libani v Libani) ... now waiting 500 years for it to fully mature 🤣

I called in at larch cottage nurseries expecting to only be there for a short amount of time, but there was so much more to walk around and see than I expected Iwas there over 2 hours! Theres of course the garden centre, with a huge cariety of plants all split into different sections, with a few rare varieties and harder to get plants you dont see in other garden centres in the area, and also a established garden to walk around filled with the most beautiful opium poppies and delphiniums, we didnt call into the cafe but it over looked a gorgous koi pond and had beautiful graoe vines twining over the terrace. Theres also some free range chickens bumbling around the garden ehich was adorable.
Abbie A — Google review
Me and my cousin from Brazil went to visit this garden centre , absolutely stunning , and we love the cheese scones .
Elizete C — Google review
Probably my favourite garden centre. It’s an amazing garden, which feels like a fairy tale to walk through. As you turn right at the end of the path you see a wonderfully peaceful cafe. Up the stairs you find a shaded area from which you oversee the luscious gardens over a pond lively with little fish. I recommend this place not just as a garden centre but as a beautiful botanical garden worthy of a visit to feel as if you enter an enchanted forest.

Brougham Castle, a 13th-century riverside fortress located near Penrith, was founded by Robert de Vieuxpont and strategically positioned at the meeting point of the river Eamont and Lowther. The castle passed into the hands of the Clifford family through marriage and underwent renovations in the early 14th century. Lady Anne Clifford, known for her tenacity, also played a role in renovating Brougham Castle.
Lovely little castle with fantastic views from the top and an interesting history, with the site dating back to the Romans. Very friendly staff as well, thank you for letting us sample some of the drinks on sale in the shop. I would highly recommend a visit to this English Heritage site. Parking is free in the vicinity (on road).
M S — Google review
Virtually a ruin, but a very good one, bits of the castle you can climb the stairs and go quite high, but be careful because the steps are narrow and might be a bit slippery when wet, but the view from the top is spectacular. No tearoom I'm afraid but a bit of a shop
Clive W — Google review
Recently had a fantastic visit to Brougham Castle for the first time and will definitely visit again. The castle has been excellently preserved and I definitely recommend visiting, especially with it being dog friendly! The only thing that let our visit down slightly was the sheep manure that was everywhere, even inside the castle ruins.

Great Riverside location. Site very well managed. Excellent interpretive panels. Special the ability to get to the top of the Keep (narrow, dark spiral staircase) Superb views Easy to get to
Chris C — Google review
This castle is set in a beautiful location with a very scenic river running by . Still quite a lot left of the ruins to see, including being able to climb the stairs to the top for some lovely views . Plenty of information boards about telling the history of the castle and the staff in the entrance/ gift shop very friendly. Well worth a visit.
Lisa S — Google review
This is a beautiful castle, dating from the 13th century. It is a wonderful castle to explore as you are able to climb the spiral stairs to the keep top. The stairs are very steep, uneven, dark and narrow but the view from the top is worth it offering superb panoramic views over the Eden Valley. To explore the castle probably takes about an hour in total. The gift shop serves a small selection of ice-creams, cold drinks, tea and coffee alongside gifts such as wooden swords, history books and English Heritage wines and gins. Well worth a visit!
C K — Google review
An interesting castle, with the keep in fair condition. You can walk to near the top, with some uneven steps and poor lighting (to be expected). Information dotted throughout. Not a large site, but of interest. Private land either side, hence the sheep. Small display in the office gives background to the site. Staff were helpful and some road parking available. Castle was 12th century I think, with Anne Clifford being a famous owner (she died that aged 86, good innings for then and now really). Romans had a fort here, part of the support for hadrians wall. This river used to be the border between England and Scotland, until the rule of William II (William Rufus)
Tom ( — Google review
I walked to Brougham Castle today along the River Eamont from Eamont Bridge. It’s a peaceful riverside route, and the top of the castle starts to peak just above the trees as you walk along. Just before you reach the castle, you'll come across a sandstone bridge that offers the best views of both the river and the ruins. It's a fantastic spot for photos and a great place to take a break. Tips for visiting • Follow the river path from Eamont Bridge for a scenic and quiet walk • The sandstone bridge has the best views of the castle and river

Scenic spot
Hiking area
Aira Force Waterfall is a beloved attraction in the picturesque Lake District, drawing visitors for over three centuries. The waterfall is where rainwater from the fells cascades into Aira Beck, creating a dramatic 65-foot drop. Surrounding the falls are nature trails leading to viewpoints and offering a secluded feel. Visitors can explore a network of trails from Ullswater lakeshore to Gowbarrow summit, passing through woodland glades and spotting rare red squirrels along the way.
We visited Aira Force during a weekend away from Manchester and were really pleased we made the stop. We arrived early, so parking was easy, though I can imagine it gets quite busy later in the day, especially during peak times. There is a bit of walking involved, including a fair number of steps, so it may not be ideal for those with larger pushchairs or anyone who finds walking difficult. That said, the paths are well maintained and the surroundings are lovely. The waterfalls themselves were fantastic powerful, scenic and well worth the effort. The whole area has a peaceful, natural charm and is clearly well looked after. It’s somewhere we would definitely return to next time we’re in the area. Highly recommended for anyone who enjoys nature and a bit of light walking.
Dan W — Google review
Visited with my wife whilst on holiday with our dogs. We did not use the main carpark but found one right at the peak on the hill. A beautiful forest walk with rushing water streams and the main centrepiece waterfall. Beautiful lakeland vistas on the edge of the woods also. A very worthwhile visit.
Daniel W — Google review
Interesting waterfall with a fairly long walk up to the cascades at the top. Not a difficult walk but paths are uneven in places. Visited a couple of times now. Car park and visitor centre is there at the bottom of the trail. Friendly staff, and free for National Trust members.
David T — Google review
Definitely worth the visit. 2 sets of falls about 15 mins walk apart. Make sure to visit the 1st bridge for fantastic long drop view. The road into the waterfalls from Windermere is also spectacular. Entry in Oct 2025 is £6 for 2 hours which is plenty of time for most people. Free for NT members.
Stuart H — Google review
Such a breathtaking place. The scale and size of the waterfall is just a great experience to witness. The surrounding forest and parkland is lovely to walk through. The viewing platform at the bottom of the waterfall gives a unique and stunning view.
Nigel S — Google review
Get ready for steep descend and climb up for the waterfall. If you do not want to get down, you can visit the waterfall far from the place. Car park is smaller, and will easily be full during peak period.
Martin R — Google review
Beautiful open area to explore with paths right to the top of the falls if you're feeling fit ( i wasn't). Fantastic views and a fair sized free car park
Viking D — Google review
Excellent scenic place to visit (even in the rain). We parked in the car park just off the A5091, there is a smaller car park further up the road nearer to the top of the falls. Parking (if not a National Trust member) was six pounds for two hours, which should be adequate to walk up to and back down from the falls, although you may want longer if visiting the tea rooms adjacent to the site. The walk, whilst up hill is not too strenuous, but care is needed in places due to tree roots and a bit of mud when wet. It is worth walking up past the staircase down to the upper stone bridge, as there are some lovely smaller falls and scenery up past the main falls. The walk is circular and only about a mile or so round, the views are spectacular, especially with the waterfall in full flow, which it was for our visit. It was very rainy when we went, but it did nothing to dampen our spirits, and was a great spot to visit. We did look in at the tea rooms, but it was quite busy so I can't comment on these. When it's busy there may be a bit of a queue for the car park, but be patient, it is worth the wait.

Bella Italia is a casual Italian restaurant located at the Center Park's Whinfell Resort. The menu caters for everyone, with pizzas being the star attraction. The facilities are child-friendly and the service is excellent.
Such a gorgeous location for the restaurant and our table had a lovely view looking out over the water. Great service from Oliwia (get this gal another kinder basket!) Excellent portion sizes and delicious food. Good facilities for wee ones. Playing Taylor Swift vault tracks will always be an instant 5* from me as well ✨ Also.. ROBOTS!

We have been to Bella Italia twice now and it's great! The atmosphere the service is spot on seated quickly served quickly also food was great both my fussy kids found something they liked and ate it all. Darius who served us both nights was a delight. Very attentive made sure we had everything we needed kept checking in asked us how our day had been what we had planned next which was nice he took the extra time to care about those he was serving. Thank you Darius.

Had such a lovely evening at Bella Italia. The food was delicious, everything came out on time, and the atmosphere was just right. Our waitress Katie made sure everything ran perfectly and really added to the experience. Couldn’t have asked for a nicer night!

Booked for lunch here. The service was excellent, the staff were very friendly and attentive (our server Cara and the gent on the door whose name we didn't get unfortunately. Even the plate robot was polite.) and the food and drinks were great. The view over the lake from our table added to the experience. Would absolutely return.

Our first night here. Arrived late but not a problem. Our server, Olivia really nice, friendly and attentive, despite us being a fussy family. Kids especially loved the robot serving their drinks and ice cream. Will definitely be back!

Have come here for the past 2 years and love it. Food is amazing. Olivia our server is the sweetest and tended to our needs.

We went here expecting it to be fine, nothing special. It’s a good few years since I went to Bella. It was far better than I’d have expected. It was really really good. Of course, you’re paying a premium but I didn’t begrudge it because it was very good. They know how to make good pizza dough, which makes all the difference. The robot waiters/bussers are a pretty cool feature. You still get served by the waiters but the robot saves them carrying a bunch of trays/plates to the table and having to make multiple trips.

Huck's is a popular dining spot at Centre Parcs, known for its great food and friendly service. Despite difficulties in booking in advance, slots opened up online and a deposit was required. The restaurant offers a variety of delicious options, including superb burgers that received high praise. It's a family-friendly place with quick seating and a good kids menu. While the prices are reasonable, drinks can be on the expensive side.
Really enjoyed my visit to Hucks! The staff were super attentive and quick, which made the whole experience smooth and pleasant. The food was good across the board, but the fajitas were absolutely awesome — full of flavor and served sizzling hot. Will definitely be coming back for those!
Simon R — Google review
The fillet steak was cooked beautifully, but the meal could have been served hotter. The ribs were lovely, served nice and hot but the chips were luke warm. The desserts were a bit of a disappointment. The hot fudge sundae was mostly a glass of cream...not much of any other ingredient and presentation not great...for the price, very disappointing. The warm cookies and icecream went down well. I have rated a 4 star as the main parts of the meal were pretty good and the service was good also.
Gem H — Google review
We were really disappointed with our meal here. Despite the nice atmosphere and really good service, the food felt more like literal fast food, and extremely processed at that. We ordered three meals and they arrived in under 5 minutes, which straight away made it obvious that nothing was freshly cooked. The beef burgers were clearly frozen, with that perfectly round, uniform look and a plastic-like texture. The taste matched, bland, over-processed, and far from fresh. It’s a shame because the staff were great and the place looks nice, but the food just didn’t live up to it at all. £18 for a frozen burger with that level of quality is way too much. If you’re expecting proper burgers made with fresh ingredients, you’ll be really let down. Wouldn’t return for the food, unfortunately.

The food I did eat was lovely and staff were incredible. Staff kept apologising for the wait, but there was no wait at all. We were more than happy with the service times.

It was ok. The staff were excellent and the food was tasty. I would have preferred a “fresh” burger rather than one that is “formed”. The chicken fajitas were excellent! The thing that marred the evening was the clearing of tables and then tipping them up so they can’t be used, over an hour before closing time and while we were still eating. Made us feel uncomfortable and under pressure to leave. Won’t be our first choice next time.

On our family holiday we decided to eat out at hucks, the service was quick and friendly to get a table and our waitress was lovely but unfortunately other than the quick and attentive waiting the food was truly awful and very expensive for food that I would rate as lower quality than McDonald's and far less tasty, 2 of our table had the mexican cheese burger which was burnt on the outside and dryer than the Sahara desert on the inside. The burgers and chicken clearly came from a packet to be reheated which at £18 is some of the worse value for money I have witnessed, people from Zimbabwe in 2008 would have thought this is robbery. The kids enjoyed their chicken nuggets which was ok, and the Kelly's ice cream was nice. Other than if you enjoy eating low quality expensive food avoid.

Absolutely one of the worst dining experiences I’ve had. The food was a major letdown from the start. The chicken starter was clearly reheated, dry and unappetizing. The nachos were burnt, with barely any cheese – completely inedible. I managed one piece of chicken and my husband had two nachos before giving up. Service was equally poor. Our drinks still hadn’t arrived by the time the main course was brought out. I eventually had to leave the table and chase staff just to get them. Meanwhile, our full plates sat on the edge of the table for over 10 minutes, with at least three members of staff walking past multiple times without acknowledging them. Only after repeated glances did someone finally ask if we were finished. We barely touched the mains either – just a few bites before leaving them too. Overall, a huge disappointment. The food, the service, and the overall atmosphere were far below expectations. Avoid Hucks!!!

Pub
The Cross Keys Inn, located in Carelton Village near Penrith, offers a delightful dining experience with locally sourced ingredients and a diverse menu. The establishment boasts picturesque views of the Lake District and Pennines. Guests have praised the excellent quality of the food, including Sunday lunch and desserts. Despite some delays during peak times, the service remains top-notch.
We had lunch at The Cross Keys last week when visiting Penrith. Great food, service, and atmosphere. I had the flat bread pizza and it was outstanding. Our server was very kind. This pub has a great atmosphere with seating inside and outside. Great selection of food and drinks on the menu. We really enjoyed our visit. Thank you!!

The food took a while to arrive but it was very tasty. The halloumi fries were excellent! And the steak and ale pie was delicious. The dining area upstairs is very nice and cosy, with a balcony and panoramic views which must be amazing to enjoy in the summer.

Such a lovely pub, with great staff and very good food. Received a friendly welcome and did not have long to wait before our order was freshly served. Inside of the pub is quaint with a friendly atmosphere and there is also outdoor seating for the warm sunny evenings. The pub has its own car parking and toilet facilities. It can also accommodate anyone with restrictions and or disabilities. I would certainly visit again when in the area.

Lovely, quaint, country pub. Amazing Sunday Roast with quality slices of tender beef. Great value for money! Highly recommended 👌 x

We were quite disappointed by our experience. Despite checking on the phone when we made our reservation for my Father’s Birthday that we could bring our dog, we were still relocated from the nice restaurant to the noisy sports bar with lots of swearing and drunk football fans. We also were not warned about the Sunday menu, which is much reduced in choice from the regular one. The waitress was nice and very apologetic, but it did take a lot of the shine off our evening. The food was very nice, I just wish the experience had been.

A really lovely place. You can tell the locals love it but we were also made to feel very welcome even though we are out of towners. The portion sizes are very generous, the menu had great choices, we all left well-fed and happy. Staff are attentive and friendly. Dog-friendly. Highly recommend.

Went for Sunday lunch and it was agreed to be excellent by my family- especially the yorkshire puddings and gravy. I enjoyed gluten free fish and chips, but was too full to sample the desserts. The pub was clean, had parking and the staff were friendly.

Had a truly amazing meal here on the way to Scotland. I had the lamb shoulder with mash and veg and hubby had the Cumberland sausage both cooked to perfection. Proper fresh home cooked meals highly recommend thank you.

The Kings Arms Hotel is a charming 17th-century establishment offering elegant dining, river angling, and rooms with a traditional English breakfast. A night's stay in the family room proved to be immaculate, featuring expected amenities such as tea/coffee/biscuits/toiletries. While the television was modest in size, the restaurant excelled in both food selection and quality, accompanied by impeccable service. The morning meal proved equally delectable.
Such a lovely stay. Gorgeous, quiet location. Lots of lovely touches in the room, a giant bed, and really helpful and welcoming staff. The meal we had was exceptional, and the chef was able to cater for my dietary requirements really well. All very dog friendly too. We will definitely be back. Thank you!

Just had a 2 night stay with friends using The Kings Arms as our base to do some hiking in the area. The Eden Valley area and the hills to walk are picturesque, heart-warming, historic, sandstone-built English.villages, with Temple Sowerby and the Kings Arms Hotel being no exception. My bedroom and bathroom were warm and cosy. The wider 9 En-suite bedroom hotel is beautifully appointed. There is a bar area which also serves as the main dining area, plus a further lounge with a mixture of tables and settees extending the dining space or for relaxing in and a separate games room with pool and darts. An idiosyncrasy is that there are no tvs in the rooms or bar / lounge, which, for me, adds to the relaxed atmosphere. Our evening meals and breakfasts were excellent. The bar has a good selection of ales, cider, wines, teas and coffees. Special mention should be made for the staff who hosted us, making us feel welcome and running the busy bar and dining in a warm and professional manner. I read that the hotel is looking to bring further space into use in their future, planning permission willing, extending bar space and adding 3 further bedrooms including a ground floor accessible one. I hope that I get back to see how things change in the future.

What a fabulous place! Beautiful inside and out, in a charming village. The room we stayed in was well appointed and spacious, with a spotless en suite bathroom - the staff even provided a bed and bowls for our dog! Loads of lovely little touches, like treats for people and dogs alike, made us feel really welcome. Our evening meal was faultless - we had beef and lamb which were both cooked to perfection, followed by the most decadent honey Pannacotta! Breakfast was equally fantastic - the full English was one of the best I've ever eaten. We will definitely be back!

What a brilliant find! Staff, food and the locals all fabulous. Walked in and had to asked if they did crisps or had anything to hand as my diabetic son had a bad hypo and needed some extra carbs. Straight away the girl on the bar passed me a pocket of crisps and said no charge. WOW! How lovely, I obviously paid but the gesture was huge. Well done. We all had beautiful hearty meals, but the beef and ale pie was a firm favourite. Our dog was made to feel welcome, the locals chatted with us and nothing was too much trouble for the staff. Great value too. We will definitely be back if we are passing through this way.

We popped in here unexpectedly last Thursday for lunch. What a lovely place to go to. Four of us had proper meals and I had a hot sandwich with salad. We all enjoyed our food very much and have already recommended the place to friends. The service by Katie was excellent, she is an asset to the place. The place was lovely indside and very clean in all areas. Having an outside area to sit in was perfect. Thanks all.

We popped in for lunch and were really glad we did! The food was delicious, freshly cooked, and really well presented. The menu had a nice variety with something for everyone, and the portions were just right. Service was friendly and relaxed, and the pub itself has a lovely welcoming atmosphere. A great spot for a casual lunch – we’ll definitely be back!

I can’t recommend The Kings Arms enough! The food is absolutely amazing. The staff are so welcoming. Nicole, Robbie and the team have achieved the rare feat of updating a traditional pub without losing its character or its locals! You must stay and eat here!!
