Canyon in 2 days

If you only have 2 days to spend in Canyon, we’ve narrowed down the top places you should check out to get the best experience of your time here.
Canyon is the gateway to Palo Duro Canyon State Park, often called the “Grand Canyon of Texas,” where you can hike, bike, ride horses, and see striking rock formations and colorful canyon walls. The town is also home to the Panhandle-Plains Historical Museum, one of the largest history museums in Texas, covering regional art, culture, and archaeology. A compact downtown with local shops and cafes gives it a classic small–Texas–town feel, and its location just south of Amarillo makes it an easy stop on a wider Panhandle road trip.
With favorites like Sayakomarn's Restaurant, Bar Z Winery, and Combine City, we’ll make sure you don’t miss out on all the must sees. We even included some of our favorite food spots around the area, like Back 40 Grill Canyon and Sayakomarn's Restaurant so you can get the best taste of Canyon while you’re here. To see our full list of food recommendations, check out our best restaurants post. If you're traveling on a budget, you can check out our cheap eats post.

Palo Duro Canyon State Park spans an impressive 60 miles of ravine that boasts towering 800-ft cliffs. Visitors can enjoy a variety of activities, including hiking the numerous trails and taking in the musical 'Texas' at the park's amphitheater. It is advisable to arrive early to beat the heat and bring plenty of water, sunscreen, and bug repellent as necessary.
Drove the Scenic Route. Amazing views, wonderful staff. We had a great time. Definitely highly recommend should you be in the area. Total time with stopping to see many views and lunch at the Trading Post, easily two to two and half hours. Highly recommend the Cheese Burgers and Fries.

We camped 3 nights at the Juniper Campground! The campsite, restrooms, camp hosts, and wildlife visitors were ALL absolutely delightful!! We did several nice hikes and enjoyed them all!! Instead of the Lighthouse Trail, we decided to make it a loop with Givens, Spicer and Lowry to the Lighthouse and Paseo del Rio! We were glad we did! The Lighthouse portion a of that loop was really the least scenic!! What a wonderful place to explore! Texas State Parks does a GREAT JOB!! Thank you!!
Susan D — Google review
We really enjoyed hiking! We did the CCC Trail and the Rock Garden both were absolutely gorgeous. The Rock Garden was very challenging but definitely had the wow factor! We had a really great time. The roadrunner was so cute such a perfect touch of nature in the park.
Alejandra D — Google review
Beautiful area. The biking loops were pedally and fun. There’s a bike rack on the lighthouse trail before the steep section. The campgrounds are nice, the one we popped into had water, flushing toilets and showers. We didn’t find out the overnight price. Lots of space on a Monday in November.
B B — Google review
Absolutely beautiful state park in America’s second largest canyon. Well preserved and maintained, with a road that goes from the rim—and the visitors center—to the bottom, without too many hairpin turns. There’s even a Trading Post that sells food and drink in the canyon (including ice cream!). In terms of hikes, highly recommend Lighthouse Trail—2.8 miles in and 2.8 back—as well as the big cave at the end of the paved road. Super beautiful, mostly flat, and doable with kids.
Jon K — Google review
My family enjoyed visiting the canyon. The big cave was pretty cool to walk, too. Most of the trails were closed off though. The amphitheater had a show that was pretty neat. The gift shop has tons to choose from. There is plenty of wildlife to walking around
Tamara S — Google review
Lots of hiking trails, there were showers and bathrooms at multiple different camp sites. This place gets very hot in the summer. You need to pack at least a half gallon or more per a person. Always bring water for your dog.

Located south of Amarillo Texas, and quite a ways off the beaten path is Palo Duro Canyon State Park. This State Park can give many National Parks a run for the money. What an amazing place. Palo Duro Canyon is the second largest canyon in the United States and the park offers wonderful facilities facilities including a cliffside visitors center, gift shops, restaurant, amphitheater, campgrounds including a camp store, restroom and shower, facilities a scenic drive through the park with stunning views of the canyon and miles of hiking trails. We camped in the canyon and had an awesome stay. Palo Duro Canyon State Park was well worth the trip. A must see if you are in the Amarillo area.

Palo Duro Creek Ranch offers a thrilling Jeep (Humvee) tour of the Palo Duro Canyon, providing an opportunity to explore the canyon's bottom and learn about its history. The tour guide, Case, is praised for his knowledge and care during the trip. Visitors recommend this exciting adventure for families who are ready to hold on tight and experience the roller coaster-like ride through the beautiful canyon. The sunset views from the canyon are highlighted as a must-see during this exhilarating excursion.
One of the best tours I've ever been on and hands down best one in the US!! Highly recommend the jeep tours with Palo Duro Creek Ranch!! The canyon views were stunning and the jeep ride felt like an adventure through Jurassic Park and Uncharted!! It was a real life roller coaster through the canyon and it gave us such a huge adrenaline rush! We did the 1 hour tour but will definitely do the 2 or 3 hour tour the next time we visit! KC was amazing tour guide and jeep driver! Very friendly and he was very knowledgeable about the history of the canyons and I loved learning about the history! Spectacular views! One of the most adventurous tours! You have to do this tour when you visit Palo Duro! Please book online in advance since the tours might book out quick.
Frances R — Google review
Absolutely incredible experience! We went on the 3-hour Jeep tour of Palo Duro Canyon today and it was AMAZING! This is hands down the best way to truly experience the canyon. You’ll see areas and viewpoints that you simply can’t access any other way. The ride was fun and adventurous—exactly what you'd want in a place like this—and the guide was knowledgeable and fun. If you're visiting the canyon, don’t miss this—book it online right now. We loved every minute of it!
Bob B — Google review
Highly recommend this jeep tour! Our driver/ tour guide Case was extremely knowledgeable regarding the history, landscape & wildlife of Palo Duro Canyon and his love for the canyon was evident. The tour takes you on trails (not roads!) through private property and includes incredible views not visible from the State Park. Beware that this is an extremely rough ride and the steep terrain is not for the weak of heart, as Case takes you on quite an adventure! He is extremely personable, witty and engages easily with guests. He offers a step ladder to help guests in and out of the back of the humvee and personally offers a helpful hand to assist guests when necessary. The only problem was that we only booked the 1hour tour. We will definitely return and book the 3hour tour next time! Thanks for an excellent experience, Case!
Paige V — Google review
We had such a wonderful time hiking at Palo Duro Creek Ranch today! Case was so kind and helpful, and we enjoyed the views, flowers, and animals immensely! What a beautiful place. Thank you for sharing your beautiful ranch with visitors!
Darla W — Google review
We booked the 3 hour jeep tour. It was incredible! I have a bad knee and am not as fit as I once was, so I couldn't hike the trails at the state park, but this tour took us over all the rugged terrain all the way to the bottom of the canyon and back up. Our driver, Case, was very knowledgeable, funny and a perfect gentleman. When we would stop at amazing view points, he always had a helping hand out for those of us that needed it. Just don't forget to bring your sunscreen and bug spray!
Leslie H — Google review
Case was an amazing jeep tour guide. He’s passionate about his land and the canyon, was happy to answer all of my many questions and doled out humor at every twist and turn. And those views!!! We only had time for the 1 hour tour but wish we had been able to take one of the longer ones! Definitely highly recommend!
Heather F — Google review
A true Texas style tour! Case was very personable and knowledgeable. We off-road a lot and wasn’t sure on how much we would enjoy the tour…did not disappoint at all!!
Kristin — Google review
Our family of 5 had a great time with Case on the 2 hour jeep tour. He was a wealth of knowledge and provide a true Texas experience. The ride is exciting and fun from the ranch all the way down to the bottom of the canyon with stop along the way to enjoy the views and take pictures. Highly recommend!

Combine City, located in Amarillo, is a quirky and lesser-known attraction that features a collection of half-buried combine harvesters. Situated along Claude Highway south of the city, this unique site was created by local farmer Orville Ladehoff who decided to plant broken combines on a two-acre plot of land. While visitors cannot interact with the combines like at Cadillac Ranch, they can still admire them from outside.
A tongue in cheek comparison to Cadillac ranch, this is a quirky attraction to the Route 66.
Rohini — Google review
This was definitely not a city of Combines, just a few knackered Combine’s in a field close to the road. Not worth the detour, as it looked like the farmers old equipment parking lot. Took no photo and can’t be considered a Route 66 attraction or viewing
Craig D — Google review

Bar Z Winery is located off the beaten path with a large sign pointing out the entrance and a long driveway leading to a Quonset Hut building. The tasting room, located at the rear of the building, offers a fun atmosphere and a nice patio overlooking the canyon. The winery uses Texas-grown grapes to produce very good wines. Visitors can enjoy delicious reds and beautiful views while relaxing with a glass of wine on the patio, making it an ideal spot to watch the sunset.
What a great wine tasting. Great atmosphere nice and relaxing. They even allow pets. What a great way to spend the day superior wine, tasting, and superior view.

Ok, im from California, so forgive the wine snob.......No need. The Red flight had very generous pours. We really enjoyed the 2018 Pinot and the 2018 Cab. 2018 Fav was a bit too fruit forward my tastes. The Rousanne was slightly tart for my wife.
Martin ( — Google review
My wife found this winery through an organization called Harvest Host and since it was on our way west and we were pulling our Airstream, we decided to stop, drink some wine and camp over night. The wine was quite good, the staff was equally good and the view was beautiful, since the winery has a view of the Palo Duro Canyon. If you're a member of HH or Boondockers Welcome, you can camp overnight. There are no hookups.
David G — Google review
Beautiful view, delicious wine and an awesome host - we had a wonderful time. Thank you!

We stopped to spend the night, just passing through Amarillo. It was great. The staff was incredibly accommodating., wine was excellent. They even let us bring our dogs inside because it was windy and cool outside. Monty was great, a old music lover for sure. Customers were bringing in old vinyl albums and Monty played them all. I only have negative, the music was too loud. But , overall loved the evening. We will definitely stop again on our way to Colorado. Thank you Monty and Payton. .
Jo M — Google review
Our group was visiting the Palo Duro Canyon in Amarillo TX and this was the only winery in the area. This was our first experience with Texas red wine....it was awful. We tried multiple reds and they were sour tasting. The Pinot Noirs were very dark, more so than Melbacs' and Cabernets that we are familiar with. I just hope that other Texas red wines are better than the ones at this location.
Mike W — Google review
Bar Z has made my list of places to hangout with friends and family. Last week was my first time out and I was super happy at how welcoming the place was with a relaxed atmosphere, good service- plus dogs are welcome! Regarding the wines, I am not a wine expert, but I really enjoyed both the Pinot and the “Howling Cow”. (One thing to note is that the pours are quite generous, so be prepared for a “healthy” serving with each glass.) As a local, I will be bringing anyone visiting here

Bar Z Winery is also a Harvest Host. They allow RV'ers to spend the night if they cover into the winery and taste and purchase. That is a fantastic way to travel across the country. Loved their wines

Nestled in Canyon, Texas, the Panhandle-Plains Historical Museum stands as the largest history museum in the Lone Star State. This vibrant institution offers a captivating glimpse into the region's natural and cultural heritage through an array of engaging exhibits. Visitors can immerse themselves in hands-on experiences, from sitting behind the wheel of a classic Ford Mustang while listening to Buddy Holly tunes to trying out a sidesaddle.
Amazing History Museum across many disciplines. Geology, art, paleontology, history, and interesting special collections of textiles, guns, cars and the history of oil exploration. Very educational and you can easily spend a day or two here. I liked the fact that they had a STEAM education area, not STEM. Arts are necessary! Also, there is a great art collection here.
Trina S — Google review
Saw the reviews and had to visit myself. So much fun learning about the Panhandle Plains. My 8 year old loved it, her favorite part was Pioneer Town. Really enjoyed our visit and we learned so much.
Rachael J — Google review
Having been to the varied Smithsonians, this is either equal to or exceeds the collection of American History. From wagons to Autos, from dinosaurs to drilling for oil, this museum surpasses many museums. The artifacts are real and not just a diorama. I will be back to learn more...totally great place!
Adam W — Google review
Was here about ten years ago, very nice. Supposedly closed for several months now because it needs 110million dollar upgrade to the fire suppression system ... What!!! Trump's new ballroom is gonna be $250million total.
Joey C — Google review
This is a phenomenal find. We took a day to explore the exhibits to include dinosaurs, oil exploration and drilling, indigenous people, cattle ranchers, and cow boys. The auto and firearm exhibits were my favorite. Parking is behind the building with the entrance on 4th. If you'r disabled there is parking in this lot near the back door. Ignore the sign at the rear entrance to go around front. The door is open, and you can ask the security guard to walk through to the front ticket counter.
Alan F — Google review
I have wanted to visit the Panhandle-Plains Historical Museum for a few years, but it is closed until they can fix some things in the building
Gear W — Google review
This was the place to go for families that enjoy learning. The interactive learning was the best part for my children. The art galleries were amazing and wonderful. The bone exhibit was quite spectacular. The best part is that it took two and a half hours to thoroughly see all that there was to see. It is definitely worth the money.
Jessica J — Google review
This was a very informative museum. There were several hands on type of exhibits for the little ones. Our daughter was able to sit in a side saddle and a regular saddle, open drawers to reveal artifacts on display, and an Adobe structure to crawl through. There was a nice historical video playing in the movie theatre. This was a nice way to spend an hour or two. Entrance fees were $3 for children, 10 for veterans, and 12 for adults. Also close to down town Canyon, restaurants, and bakeries.

Water park
Canyon Aqua Park offers a range of amenities and attractions for families to enjoy. Visitors can rent cabanas for shade, which is highly recommended as the shady spots fill up quickly. The kids' area includes two slides, a bucket dump, and sprays. Older children can have fun on two big slides, while others can relax in the lazy river or swim in the lap pool with diving boards. Concessions are fast and affordable, with Domino's pizza available.
All seven of the kids from 2 to 13 enjoyed it. Clean restrooms, friendly staff, they were a little funny about us bringing in our own water bottles which was odd to me, but no real complaints about the park. Concessions and slightly better than at many pools. Definitely a safe place for the kids and there is plenty of shady area too. We’d return.
D B — Google review
Totally loved it very clean n more than enough lifeguards to make your kids feel safely.
Yolanda S — Google review
Always a great day at this place. Grateful it’s availability on these hot days. Clean, well run and much appreciated.
Amy B — Google review
The bag search, although necessary, took too long. The flow into the front gate could be improved. The cost was not bad. It is unpleasant that one has to pay to get in, exit for an hour, and then pay to get back in again for the last half of the day. Staggering the staff to allow for breaks would be a better process. Cleaning is also done during that hour break. This could also be done frequently throughout the day in order to have a better consumer experience
Susie B — Google review
We were really disappointed with our visit to this pool. There are way too many unnecessary rules that take away from actually being able to enjoy the time there. On top of that, the lifeguards and staff especially the younger ones were rude and unprofessional. They had bad attitudes and clearly need some training on how to speak to people with basic respect. One of the assistant managers, a young boy, even tried to act intimidating as we were leaving but honestly, it just came off as immature and unnecessary. Overall, not a place I’d recommend if you’re looking for a friendly or relaxing experience.
Veronica — Google review
Worst customer service ever. When you purchase a 3 hour session, you should receive a full 3 hour session. The manager was rude and treated my family very poorly. When I was asked to wait for the first 30 minutes, we were okay. However being asked to wait another 30 minutes completely ruined my daughter's birthday party. If you have something important to do for your family's event, DONT GO HERE. Stephanie Bass is the worst manager I've ever been in contact with.
Denise L — Google review
The staff is amazing very sweet and nice and very informative. The pool is great and very refreshing. We came on vacation and we had such an amazing time here. We will definitely be coming back.
Brianna S — Google review

We attended our first Lady Buffs game here at WT A&M Campus, and we brought our 3 year old granddaughter with us all the way from Ft Worth...to check out the game and all it's energy! We absolutely loved our time here watching the teams compete, their respect for the game, each other, and all that cheering from each dugout, (loved that!) and the coaching skills during the double-header! It's been too long since I've watched live sports, and being here reminded me of what I've been missing and why. The skills displayed by these young ladies was quite impressive and entertaining as well. I really enjoyed getting to know the players and their personal batting styles. Sitting so close to the batting box is a treat. I felt like a kid again! Oh, the effort from the skybox and it's announcing staff was very fun and engaging. The free T-shirts tossed to the fans for all the strike-outs was a nice touch. Great tunes between batters to get ya fired up too! Nice job Coaches and Lady Buffs! Btw, they took both games that day, and our 3 year old had a blast out at that ballpark 💪🥎

Back 40 Grill Canyon is a new establishment that has been receiving positive feedback for its good service. While some customers have expressed disappointment with certain aspects of the menu, others have had a great experience. The western burger, topped with green chilies and fried jalapenos, along with shoestring fries and a Breckenridge vanilla porter, was particularly praised. Additionally, the Back 40 burger and skinny fries were also highlighted as delicious options.
Wow - for just wandering in here, this place was a knockout win! Had the western burger (topped with green chillies and fried jalapenos) with shoestring fries and paired with a Breckenridge vanilla porter. The gf had a rabbit food, which looked green. Prompt service, nice patio out back.

New, good service. Haven't had the food yet. Would recommend that the bar serve drinks on the rocks with something other than crushed/nugget ice. Had a whisky on the rocks... Came back for the food...disappointed in the queso. Menu says white queso with green chili. Looking for like canned nacho right now.

I ordered the Palo During sandwich and it was fantastic! The onion rings were amazing. My hubby ordered the burger - it wasn't cooked evenly - thicker on one side. (He didn't say anything until we left. I have a feeling the chef would have remedied it if we had complained.) Fries were matchsticks - a nice change. Brantley our waitress was TERRIFIC! Sit outside and listen to the birds and enjoy a cozy lunch.

Went in for the first time last Saturday evening. It was very calm when we arrived and no real crazy rush being dinner time on a weekend. We sat down and the waiter was very quiet and handed us menus asked what we would like to drink. Never really got much of an introduction from him but, thought no big deal. He came back with our drinks while we were still looking over the menu and asks us if we wanted appetizers. We kindly asked for more time and he walked away without a word. A couple minutes later he comes back and asks if we wanted appetizers and we ordered them. Appetizers arrive and he asks what we would like to order for our meal, mind you we had just finished looking over the appetizers. We asked for a bit more time. After we placed our meal orders he takes our menus and again quietly retreats. He brings our food once it’s ready and sets down the food and walks away, again no words. Halfway though our meal, we get asked if we wanted to get our ticket or to go boxes… We were still eating! In all honesty, the food was ok. Nothing incredibly special. It was fairly traditional diner food. My review was mostly about the service. It felt like we were a burden to the waiter’s time and felt almost rushed through our dinner experience, a bit negative for our first time there. One time there was probably enough for us.

I was excited to visit one of Canyon's newest restaurants. However, that excitement quickly disappeared and the experience became an experience I wish I could easily erase. I ordered the All American Burger medium well+ bacon. The 1st round my burger was well done and my fries were old and cold. So I sent it back and got it remade. The 2nd round was brought and the burger looked really good but when I took a bite there was a strand of hair. Talk about gross. I couldn't wrap my mind of giving it another chance. At least not for now. I will give it another chance some other day.

We ordered the Mongolian beef and Sweet and Sour chicken with fried rice. All the food was excellent and the tea was perfect! Not one thing negative to say! Canyon has not disappointed in the food or walking departments!!

I am visiting Palo Duro Canyon, so I decided to try a restaurant in the area. Although I'm not a big fan of Far Eastern cuisine, I ordered Sriracha Fried Rice and Garlic Basil Shrimp. The only issue I encountered was the uneven spice levels in the dishes. It seemed like the chef may have been Indian, as the spice was quite intense. To balance out the heat at the end of the meal, I ended up chewing on some dates.

This is the place to go for some fresh and always delicious Thai food I've ever had. I would put them up against P.F. Chang's any day; it's just that good. If you're anywhere close to Canyon, TX, you must try this place if you want some superb oriental food!

I really found this as a surprise. Didn't expect to find this quality cuisine here. The rolls were good, loved the jalapeno. Soup was great. Loved the udon noodle combination. Highly recommend it

I'm kinda neutral about this place, I liked the plate I ordered seafood Thai pad, but the thing about the noodles they were a bit overcooked. It tasted good and I did want something spicy to add to it but didn't get a chance to order anything else. I do believe that the staff should be a bit more observant of the customers so that they are not left needing something or looking for a waitstaff, flagging them down. Overall a good restaurant good food with a nice ambiance.

Would be a five, but the girl at the register was extremely rude. The food was really good and everyone else we talked to there was really sweet
Kristina H — Google review
I got takeout kra pao chicken a couple weeks ago. I asked for extra spicy and they did pretty well to accommodate, I'd say it was a 2.5/5 heat level. I really should have put a fried egg on it. The chicken is chunked more like stir fry instead of minced or ground like typical holy basil. That's how most Thai restaurants here make it though. Good spot for Thai food in Canyon.

My only complaint is that any dish with noodles is made with Ramon packets very cheaply made. So if your going to get something make sure it’s not any Ramon or noodles you will be disappointed :(

Fast food restaurant
Wendy's is a quick-service hamburger chain that offers various accompaniments like chili and baked potatoes. Customers highly enjoy their delicious burgers, especially the double bacon ones, along with indulgent chocolate shakes. The recommendation for this place is absolute, as people are eager to return. It is essential to maintain cleanliness and ensure that the food is always served hot. The parking lot has sufficient space for trucks and trailers to park conveniently while grabbing a meal.
New store is amazing. Service was great. They are FAST and always friendly. I’m excited they serve breakfast at this location!

I went through the drive thru yesterday after work. I ordered a cobb salad and hands down it was the best tasting fresh salad ever. I even go as far as saying better than most fast food places! Also every time I have ever went to this Wendy's the staff has always been friendly !! Thanks guys for making my dinner awesome :)

Our food was good even though they prepared it wrong. My husband got a baconator Jr. Even though he ordered a Dave's single with cheese. My baconator fries order turned out to be chili cheese fries. The staff was friendly when I reported these discrepancies. However, they didn't offer any sort of compensation whatsoever. I didn't ask for any or really need it, but it would have been a nice gesture.

Food was tasty and a great value. The fries were hot and crispy!

After the remodeling this store really stepped up their game. I was really impressed after my first few stops after it reopened. But unfortunately i went today and my food was not great. My burgers were cold, the fries were old and tasted like extremely dirty fryer oil as well as my nuggets. They weren't short staffed, the line moved very fast. But my food was very questionable. Hopefully it was just a bad day and next time will be better. Not here to put down the staff, they were all very nice. But I'd like to receive fresh food if that's what Wendy's supposedly aims for.

Parking lot was big enough for me to park my truck and trailer out of the way while I grabbed some food so that was nice.

Traveling across the country from New York. Stopped next door to do laundry and had lunch at this burger place. Super friendly staff, quick service and delicious food. The burger topping bar was a bonus. Be sure to get the hand battered onion rings, you won’t regret it.

The perfect place to stop! We gave this place a chance and we will certainly will be going back! We ordered a burrito and burger. The burger tasted fresh with a fluffy bun and juicy patty. The burrito and green salsa was flavorful without having excess heat. I ordered a large burrito and it was honestly refreshing. I've had a large burger at Buffs in town and I just feel so sluggish because of the grease, but Hil's burrito was just fresh. Thank you Hil's will be back to try out the rest of your menu!

The Cheesy Burger with mushroom and bacon on a homemade bun was so good I stopped breathing for a minute. The decor was new in the 50’s… a perfect little Texas hole in the wall.
Mindy J — Google review
Awesome small town, family-owned and run burger joint! They were short-staffed (only dad and son running the whole thing) so it required a little patience, but it was well worth the wait. The cheese burger was solid, the chicken strips and steak fingers were hand battered and excellent, and the grilled chicken dinner with grilled veggies was outstanding. We will definitely be back!

Great burgers and fries. Good old school dinner with the right atmosphere and service. If you're looking for a burger and fries in Canyon that's more than fast food, this is the place.
