Sanibel in 1 day

If you only have 1 day to spend in Sanibel, we’ve narrowed down the top places you should check out to get the best experience of your time here.
Sanibel Island, a barrier island off the coast of southwest Florida, is known for its fine beaches and ecotourism. The island has several walk-in parks that preserve the natural habitat of the area. Just southeast of the city of Fort Myers, Sanibel was named for the tiny shells that occur in abundance along the beaches. The island is home to more than 200 species of birds, making it a popular destination for bird watchers as well.
With favorites like Sanibel Lighthouse, Lighthouse Beach Park, and Lighthouse Cafe of Sanibel Island, we’ll make sure you don’t miss out on all the must sees. We even included some of our favorite food spots around the area, like Sanibel Fresh and Cielo Restaurant so you can get the best taste of Sanibel while you’re here. To see our full list of food recommendations, check out our best restaurants post. If you're traveling on a budget, you can check out our cheap eats post.

Lighthouse Beach Park is a picturesque 32-acre park located at the tip of an island, featuring a historic lighthouse, fishing pier, picnic area, and showers. The beach offers award-winning white sands and stunning sunset views with hues of peach, pink, and coral. The famous Sanibel Lighthouse adds charm to the beach and serves as a backdrop for various activities such as weddings and family photos. Visitors can also explore the surrounding area with charming cafes and restaurants offering waterfront dining options.
For all you husbands out there who go to the beach with their wives, this is the beach for you and me! The parking lot was not real big but it was very close to the beach. 😁 The sand was nice the shells were pretty and did I mention how close the parking was( free if you have a handicap plate) the water was clear and the beach not crowded on a Sunday. The lighthouse was pretty neat. It’s worth the 6 bucks to cross the bridge.
Mike G — Google review
The beach is great! Soft, white sand. The bathrooms are very CLEAN, which cannot be said about alot of the bathrooms at other beaches. I spent all day there, and it did not become overcrowded. 2 👍🏿👍🏿 The water was warm and calm with occasional waves created by boats in the distance. I would have given it 5 ⭐️s, but the water is not quite as clear as Siesta Keys'. A great place to go.
Jeffrey R — Google review
Great spot to enjoy the beach and look for seashells. Sand is soft and easy 1-2 min walk from parking to sand. Restrooms and showers. Like everywhere else on Sanibel, the parking enforcement is relentless and they are circulating the parking lot all day to find violations. Better to pay the $5/hour than risk the $150 ticket. they even check at night around sunset.
Spencer — Google review
Pros: parking is close to the beach and is $5/hr, via code you text to a number and pay with credit card. Tons of shells! Water is pretty clear, but very warm (not refreshing in 95+ degree Florida heat). Cons: Lighthouse is underwhelming. But the worst thing was TERRIBLE BUGS. We went about a hour prior to sunset and got eaten alive. Seriously- it felt like something was stinging us continuously as we walked the beach. The bites were bad the next day and even worse the next! We had hundreds of bites all over our bodies- they were miserable and itchy and formed big welts around them! We had to buy Calamine lotion, antihistamines, and lotion to make it through the rest of our vacation. We stopped at a beach on the Sanibel causeway that was MUCH better to watch the sunset. It was breezy and NO BUGS- and free parking.
Erin E — Google review
Stunning beach, big and clean and you can relax with plenty of real edtate to use. Parking is steep at 5 dollars per hour but they do have good facilities you can use.
Stuart ( — Google review
We found shells, water was pretty clear. BONUS: If you have an RV smaller than 30 ft they have 2 reserved parking spaces right up front by beach. We parked there for 2 hours in our 25' RV, and it only cost $10
Amy L — Google review
This is a nice beach. The shells weren't at all what we were expecting. There are a lot of shells, but most are broken. The sand is white and doesn't get hot. You do have to pay to park here, $5/hour.
Amber T — Google review
Beautiful white sand beach. Convenient restroom and shower area. Beautiful flowers and plants in the wildlife protection area at the beach by the parking lot.

Sanibel Lighthouse, built in 1884, is a historic beachfront beacon that is currently not open to the public but there are talks of refurbishing it for visitors to climb to the top. The surrounding park offers waterfront views on both the Gulf and the bay, with a fishing pier and shaded nature trails. It is also listed on the Great Florida Birding Trail due to its diverse bird population during fall and spring migrations.
The first time we went we anchored down on a pontoon. The second time we drove over. Highly recommend getting there early if you're driving. Parking fills fast. Absolutely beautiful. Water was great, beach was beautiful, shells were everywhere. You won't be disappointed.
Meghan — Google review
Pleasant Beach with powdery, white sand, lots of small shells, very simple lighthouse on the point. The beach seemed to have plenty of space even when the parking lot was full. It is a little bit crowded, but there is space to spread out. Parking is five dollars per hour as in most Florida Beach areas. Parking was busy and we had to make a few loops to get a spot, but we came toward the end of the day right before a thunderstorm so that helped out a bit. You pay a six dollar toll, pay by plate is OK if you do not have a toll pass. It's a pretty drive over the causeway and into Sanibel. This is very close to a scenic wildlife refuge Drive. On your way in and out don't forget to stop at EM Ocean and the magic bus sweets and treats shop. There are several leather beaches going in the other direction and I'd recommend checking them all out as Sanibel Island is pretty small.

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Sanibel Lighthouse Park and Beach is a true slice of paradise! The historic lighthouse, dating back to 1884, adds charm to a stunning stretch of coastline filled with seashells, soft sand, and gentle Gulf breezes. The beach is peaceful and well-kept, with beautiful views — perfect for sunrise walks, photography, or simply relaxing by the water. Plenty of parking, clean facilities, and easy access make it ideal for couples and families alike. A must-visit spot that captures the true beauty and serenity of Sanibel Island!
David ( — Google review
Sanibel Lighthouse Beach is absolutely beautiful! The water is a stunning shade of blue, and the beach itself is clean, peaceful, and perfect for a relaxing day. The lighthouse adds a unique charm to the scenery. The only downside was parking—it was really limited, and we had to wait quite a while for a spot. But once we got there, it was definitely worth it. Just be prepared for a bit of a wait during busy times
W B — Google review
Absolutely awesome historical place to visit on the beach. Beautiful turquoise waters, gentle breezes and tranquility make this a must see attraction on Sanibel Island. Lots of sea shells as well!

You cant travel to the Fort Myers Beach area without a stop at the Sanibel lighthouse. Area is making so much progress. Glad to see GREEN vegetation again. Lighthouse isnt leaning,my photography is!!
Robin S — Google review
This lighthouse got hit hard by hurricane Ian back a few years ago and lost one of its legs and was leaning towards the ocean but somehow managed to survive the hurricane. The leg was found and the lighthouse was restored. It's worth taking a visit to see this historical lighthouse continue to help navigate boaters at night or do some fishing by the pier that's still under construction
M W — Google review
Nice beach, found a few shells. Parking is $5 and hour. This was our first time using the text and pay for parking. I messed up the process and it cost me $150. Hard lesson learned.

The Lighthouse Cafe of Sanibel Island is a charming eatery located in Sanibel, Florida. It's known for its specialty pancakes and inventive sandwiches, as well as other deli-style eats. The cafe offers breakfast and lunch, with the option for dinner during the winter season.
We visited on a relatively busy morning but immediately got a table outside. The atmosphere was very pleasant as well as the service. Food was delicious. They have the best side potatoes (Lighthouse Potatoes) ever! Only the parking was a little bit challenging and I assume you’ll have to wait a little longer on busy days if you want to sit inside.
Vanessa P — Google review
The wife and I dined here for breakfast on 7/19/25. The restaurant is clean and the staff friendly and attentive. We both had the Lighthouse Cafe egg breakfast. The breakfast was good. The side of homemade strawberry jam was very good.
Richard C — Google review
Great spot for breakfast (The World’s Best) and lunch, very consistent, friendly staff and always reliable. Probably the best home fries on the planet! Don’t forget to check out the specials on the wall! My “go to” is the eggs Benedict with breakfast potatoes which are superbly seasoned and prepared the proper way…with onions!
Gregory R — Google review
We stopped in for breakfast this morning, which was our first visit to this current location. We had previously visited Lighthouse Cafe when it was further east on Periwinkle. That former location was destroyed by Hurricane Ian. We always thought their food was the best on the island. That's still the case. One improvement at this location was that the establishment was much cleaner, as was made possible by new construction. Fortunately, many of the framed photos of lighthouses from around the world were saved from the old location and adorn the walls here. Today, the special board featured a Travis Kelce scramble, which was amazing. My party also ordered Denver omelet, pancakes, and various kids' meals. Most meals were served with toast and strawberry preserves. The strawberry preserves were so fresh and delicious, everyone in our group raved about them and wanted more. In fact, all ages, kids, adults, seniors, were delighted with the food. Our waitress was super polite, friendly and attentive, One little issue for some was that the sun shines very brightly through the large windows at the front of the dining area and there were no shades on the windows. As one was seated, that bright sun shone in their eyes. We observed parties seated at these tables instantly requesting other tables out of the sun. Eventually, there were folks that didn't mind the sun as much and these tables did fill up. The restaurant was busy on a Sunday morning and the vibe was one of fun family enjoyment, because that's what people were doing. We loved our meal and entire experience at LHC and will definitely return for another meal soon. It is still the best on the island.

Just as we remembered it and only made better with a new location! Lighthouse café is a Sanibel staple offering a delicious breakfast until 2 PM. We can’t wait to come back next year.
Katherine S — Google review
The food was great and the prices were reasonable. There Is a language barrier you’ll have to overcome with the servers and we had to send a few items back that we hadn’t ordered to get the correct ones so just be prepared for that. The atmosphere was nice and “islandy” (if that’s even a word…lol) but the seats and booths are Not padded so just know that you’ll be sitting on hard wood for your meal.

What a wonderful experience! We came to Sanibel Island for a weekend getaway and decided to get there in time for lunch. We arrived at around 12:30 pm on a Friday and were greeted by Dan. As you walk in the door he greets you as if you are friends. The bus person immediately brought us water and soon we were visited by our waitress. I ordered Apple filled French Toast and my husband had their standard breakfast. We were blown away. My French Toast was two pieces of French bread French Toast with some type of apple mixture between the two pieces. It was amazing! In my 10 years with my husband he has never finished my meal - this was the first time! His breakfast was yummy as well with 2 eggs, little potato cubes cooked to perfection with pieces of onion, two sausage patties, and toast with an amazing strawberry jam. Best potatoes I have ever had at a restaurant. All in all were extremely pleased with our breakfast! Thank you so much!

Sanibel Fresh, formerly known as Bennetts Fresh Roast, is a delightful and modern spot that offers house-roasted coffee, creative homemade donuts, and light fare. Chef Amy Visco Schmicker brings her culinary expertise to the forefront by using nitrate-free locally sourced meats, local eggs, and honey from Harold P. Curtis Honey Co. of LaBelle. The restaurant also supports the community by donating to the Harry Chapin Food Bank with every bag of oat grains used.
Some of us wanted breakfast and some vegan lunch. This incredible chef accommodated our party. So many options here. The chef here is phenomenal. Elegant delicious food. Delectable vegan dessert. Must stop here and DINE to breath and relax.

Amazing food !! wonderful, kind service! if you try nothing else, do yourself a favor and try the cranberry walnut muffin! I've never had a better muffin in my life, and I asked if they would make me a fresh batch because they sold out, and they so kindly made me my own batch to come back and pick up! delicious!

Food was delicious! We went here based on the reviews and dairy free and gluten free options. We got a breakfast sandwich and the Buccaneer Açaí Bowl. They were both delicious! The bowl is quite filling. You grab a menu and sit down and figure out what you want. And then go up and order and they bring it to you. We appreciated the outside seating also. Definitely will be back. The coffee was good too.

Update March 2022- STILL GREAT!- BEST turkey cranberry Brie EVER!! And you can now sit outside and relax 😃😃 GREAT place for lunch! “Farm to table” ideas, they try to get fresh food “from Sanibel to Miami”. Paninis incredible with cheese and special jam. Highly recommend! - Bright and fun. Close to causeway, you place your order up front and then get a table, they bring food to you.

Unreal, fresh and even gourmet taste on every part of this breakfast. This is real food, and very good eating! Super high quality, might go as far as saying the best on the island.

Quaint little restaurant tucked in off Periwinkle as you head north up Sanibel Island... Stopped by just for a cup of coffee and to check out the menu... Looks like I'll be back while I'm here... Patio out front, plenty of parking in the rear...And the organic coffee is excellent! Only open for breakfast and lunch so come by early...

We visited Sanibel in June and visited Sanibel Fresh because we did not want to wait 45 minutes for breakfast on Father's Day. I'm so glad we went there. Everything we ordered was DELICIOUS. They had an amazing variety of gluten free food which we needed for one of us. GF pancakes were phenomenal. The regular and GF pancakes are gigantic and yummy. The avocado toast with eggs was so darn good I got it twice on our trip and since I've been trying to make a copycat version at home! They had out samples of some of their muffins which were also melt in your mouth tasty! The best part was the coffee for me! The Jamaican Me Crazy was the best coffee I had on the island! I would have eaten there everyday we were there if I could have. Staff was friendly, food was FRESH and I LOVE finding healthy food on vacation. Place was clean!! Wish we had one here at home!!!

Cielo Restaurant is a sophisticated dining spot located at Casa Ybel Resort on Sanibel Island. The restaurant offers carefully sourced American cuisine in an elegant setting with live piano music. With its polished silver, gleaming crystal, and soft jazz ambiance, Cielo is perfect for special occasions or leisurely meals. Chef Omar Clarke crafts impressive holiday menus and the restaurant boasts an extensive wine list.
Excellent restaurant all around. Food, service and ambiance are all A-1. For appetizers I recommend the calamari fritti (completely different from what I had tried before) and the crispy ribs. As entrees we had the bone in grilled pork chop, seafood platter, the Bucatini al’Amatriciana and the meat balls for children. All were very tasteful and fresh. For dessert the apple and chocolate tart was delicious. Our waiter was very nice. helpful and knowledgeable. The lightning and the music were soft and inviting. Worth to come back.

Delicious dinner a few nights ago! We started with the wedge salad and each chose a different entree. My personal favorite was the 12oz Ribeye and the Chilean Sea Bass. The flavor of the ribeye was perfect! The buttery, flaky sea bass was close your eyes and savor good! Mmmm! Highly recommend!
Meredith A — Google review
Best fine dining restaurant on Sanibel Island, in my humble opinion. Delicious and unique cocktail offerings. Extensive wine list. They always seem to have a great special either for app, main or both. I’ve never had anything less than a fantastic meal here and elite service. Have been coming to Sanibel for 15+ years and always try to make a night available to go here. We really miss the live piano though!

Went while on vacation and the food was marvelous. Between this and wickies lighthouse the food you can find around here is to die for ! The focaccia bread and artichoke oil you get at the table is warm and fresh, the appetizers are all plated beautifully and taste great, and the entrees of course are very flavorful and nice. They aren’t super heavy/carb based it’s definitely a little lighter / veggie and protein focus but that’s good for some people ! Not the place to go if you want a super carb heavy meat and potato type dinner I feel … and dessert ! Wow ! The flourless cake was fudgy and outstanding and paired with the cappuccino was the perfect end to dinner. Would definitely recommend to anyone looking for an upscale meal on the island . Great servers and atmosphere too

My wife and I were celebrating her 70th Birthday and our 50th wedding anniversary and not sure where we were going for dinner and a gentleman on the plane told us to try Cielo. His recommendation turned out to be a great one. From the moment we stepped in and were greeted by Charles Grover we knew we were in the right place. Charles was very accomdating, our waitress, Coreen, was also very friendly and professional. The food was absolutely outstanding. The calamri was incredible as were the Chilean Sea Bass, which my wife had and the pork chop that I had was outstanding. Topped off with a dessert of tiramisu made for a great dining experience. I highly recommend this fine establishement to anyone looking for good food, great service and atmospher.

Our server Irma was great. Excellent service. The Chilean Seabass was one of the best prepared. Coming from a chef, I'd definitely come back.

A pleasant evening was had by my party of four. The food was good and turned up at the table in a reasonable amount of time. The restaurant is bright and airy and well sound proofed so all the surrounding conversations did not intrude. The table was a little cramped for four and there was no beer list, though a small selection was available. Wine is more of this restaurant's things.
Simon R — Google review
The food, service and atmosphere here were phenomenal. Music was all instrumental and was really nice. We did make a reservation and when we arrived we had no wait. Our waiter was able to answer to any question we had about the menus, and was able to provide great recommendations. Pricing was pretty reasonable for food and drinks. Everything we got we loved: wedge salad (I recommend), Grilled Filet of Beef, Wagyu Burger, Wagyu Beef Cheek Pasta, and Apricot - Pistachio Seared Chicken. Everyone in my party loved what they got. I forgot to take a photo of our dinners but took one of my tiramisu (100% recommend as a dessert).

With its marina setting and impressive view of vessels at anchor, this restaurant is perfect for enjoying a family dinner or some drinks with friends.
Our favorite place to eat on the island since 1981! Fabulous food at great prices. We have eaten here twice this week while on vacation. Our waiter Nick (both times) is extraordinary. Don’t miss the grouper sandwich and key lime pie, which are also the best on the island. Fried shrimp is amazing too.

This restaurant is a must visit for a trip to Sanibel. The wait staff were all amazing and very friendly. All of the dishes we got were delicious. The coconut shrimp was the standout dish for the evening. I also enjoyed the salmon dinner. You truly can not go wrong on this menu. I would also recommend the potato croquettes as a side.

Gramma Dots is a hidden treasure on Sanibel Island with a great menu and an atmosphere to match. The food was served was delicious, the staff was friendly and attentive. There is plenty of parking so go enjoy a quality meal at this relaxed and friendly place.

If you are looking for deep-fried seafood this will work. The highlights were the lobster roll and crab cake. The grouper (not deep-fried) was dry. Everything else was breaded and fried and just ok. Service was very good. Place was busy for a Sunday. Cool location.
Nick L — Google review
This use to be one of our favorite places. We had to send our fish and chips back. We sat outside on the patio, and they were doing dock work. It was extremely loud. I do highly recommend the coconut shrimp. It was the best we ever had.
J M — Google review
Food was just OK. The sever was fine, the atmosphere was fine. The hostess looked like she was dying with a sourpuss face. The smoked fish dip and the pina colada were good. Those two things were the best thing we had. Everything else was just blah. Everything needed salt or something. We ordered the scallop basket (fried), coconut shrimp, clam chowder and key lime pie. The key lime pie was disgusting, I can’t explain the consistency was pasty. The chowder we had to keep adding hot sauce & salt to make it edible. Would def not go back. 🤷‍♀️
Robin H — Google review
Shared the seafood plate which was 42 but 2 people can eat from it. Seafood was incredibly fresh and cooked perfectly. Others in our group had salmon which was the best salmon I have tried. Fried shrimp and fried clams were awesome. Not a big place but about half a dozen of us on a weekend night only waited about 10 min. Beautiful outside to walk around.
Mario N — Google review
We called in here after passing and what a find, food was excellent. We had a fillet mignon sandwich and the grouper salad, Nick was our server and was really attentive and helpful. All the staff were friendly and couldn’t do enough, and the outside patio area is great spot. This is a must for anyone visiting Sanibel Island
