Points of Interest & Landmarks
Escadaria Selarón, also known as the Selaron Steps, is a famous public stairway in the city adorned with colorful and hand-painted tiles. This iconic landmark consists of 215 vibrant steps leading up from Rua Joaquim Silva. The Chilean-born artist Jorge Selarón dedicated decades to covering the steps with over 2,000 tiles collected from more than 60 countries around the world.
I took an Uber to this place and it was very easy to find. It's literally a staircase filled up with lots of different tiles from all over the world and colors. It's beautiful and very colorful. Attention to the hundreds of people trying to take pictures because on Fridays and weekends it's kinda crowded. The best time to visit it is in the afternoon during week days. It'll make a lot easier to take a nice picture. Wearing comfortable shoes is a good idea. If you go up till the top, you can even take the street over the hill and reach the ruins park.
Caio M — Google review
It could really be pack after 10am. So, if you’d like a nice photo, do go early! We had to go back a 2nd time to get nice photo taken without people everywhere!
Est R — Google review
The stairs themselves are stunning but the sheer number of people trying to pose on them makes it overwhelming and takes away from the art. Go early or in the rain for the best chance at a decent view. The street leading up to the steps is full of souvenir stalls that are actually pretty well priced compared to the same stuff at Christ the Redeemer or Ipanema.
Maris C — Google review
Ehh…it’s cute but a big tourist mess and a bit dirty. The area is a bit run down and there’s too many people, you feel like you can’t stop too long to see the different tiles because you will get in the way. It’s worth seeing but not of my top things in Rio.
Nick R — Google review
Such an amazing vibe with beautiful artwork on the steps. It can be a bit crowded, but it is so worth the trip. Grab a caprihana and stroll on up the steps. Great little shops at the bottom to check out too.
Kay — Google review
Easy to miss if you're going from up top. The stair view can be enjoyed from tje bottom only. They're located on a 5-10 minute walk from the cathedral and are definitely worth a visit.
Filip M — Google review
Sept.25: would have gotten 5 stars if it wasn't so overcrowded. We unfortunately visited on Sunday afternoon, lots of tourists which all took their time to get pictures... It was even hard only to enter the stairs just to go up.
Petra ( — Google review
I mean, it’s really cool. It’s really amazing what this person did with all these tiles but yet again it’s kind of strange what things bring tourist and mass numbers too. I mean it’s not anything very spectacular like you know a cathedral or Mount Rushmore but it’s cool.

Nestled in the vibrant neighborhood of Santa Teresa, Parque das Ruínas is a captivating public park that beautifully combines history and art. This enchanting destination features an art gallery built around the remnants of a grand mansion, offering visitors a glimpse into the past while enjoying contemporary artistic expressions. Families can embark on an exciting cable car ride to reach this elevated oasis, making it an adventure for all ages.
Such a beautiful place and an awesome weather as well! We’re lucky because a pottery event was happening on saturday. Also the place counts with a theatre. The view from Rio is incredible!

This is a wonderful park dedicated to iconic Brazilian journalist Gloria Maria. The actual building within the park accentuates celebrated Brazilian art and the park and building ruins offer magnificent vistas of Rio. Within the park is a charming outdoor cafe and the washrooms within the grounds are well maintained. This attraction is well worth a visit when in the Santa Teresa district of Rio particularly on a sunny day.
Peter K — Google review
Parque das Ruínas is one of my favorite spots in Santa Teresa, the artsy, bohemian heart of Rio. The mix of modern structures built into the old, crumbling mansion walls gives the place so much character. Climbing to the top is a must—the panoramic view over Rio is incredible, with clear sights of Pão de Açúcar and Cristo Redentor standing out beautifully. I also loved the art exhibition in the basement, which added an unexpected cultural touch. And, if you need a break, there’s a cozy outdoor café perfect for a coffee. It’s a place that feels special and is definitely worth a visit!
George A — Google review
Nice photo stop, views are gorgeous and I could imagine the home. Free. Toilets not in order, nor running water. Drinks at the top are cute though.

Very nice place to see a free exposition and also a nice view of Rio. It's quiet and cozy. The ruins park has a very nice rustic decoration with a green garden. I enjoyed going up to the top and take some cool pictures.

Must see while you're in Santa Teresa, a short uphill walk from Escadaria Selaron. Gorgeous views.

Good scenic place with historical origin in Santa Theresa neighborhood. A must top 10 places to visit when in Rio.

A hidden gem with stunning view of sugar loaf. Unfortunately it was being refurbished when we visited so most areas were closed to the public, but I've been before and recommend walking around the ruin and going all the way to the top for an amazing 360 panoramic view. There are also various musical events on regularly in the cultural centre (within the ruins), check schedule to time your visit and get something extra.

The Municipal Theater of Rio de Janeiro, built in the early 1900s, is a stunning Parisian-style venue known for its ballet and classical music performances. It is considered one of the most beautiful and significant theaters in Brazil. Visitors can explore the city center to discover architectural marvels like this theater and enjoy cultural experiences at places such as Centro Cultural Banco do Brasil.
Beautiful ballet experience. It was my first time and it was really fun and an amazing experience! Would recommend everyone visiting Rio to go to this place, enjoy the beautiful building and also experience the Ballet!

The architectural crown jewel of Rio de Janeiro. Nothing comes close to compare to the opulence and magnificence of the Theatro Municipal! Indubitably one of the most gorgeous opera houses in the world, matched only by places like the Palais Garnier in Paris, or Bayreuth in Germany.
I V — Google review
My recent visit to the Theatro Municipal do Rio de Janeiro to see the opera "Pérola" was a truly enchanting experience. From the moment I stepped into the majestic lobby, I was transported to a bygone era of elegance and grandeur. The architecture of the theater is simply breathtaking, with its intricate details and opulent decor creating a sense of awe and anticipation. The performance of "Pérola" itself was a masterpiece. The orchestra was phenomenal, filling the hall with a rich and powerful sound that resonated with every note. The singers were exceptional, delivering their complex arias with a passion and skill that captivated the entire audience. The staging was beautiful, with stunning costumes and clever use of lighting that enhanced the dramatic storytelling. What I found particularly impressive was the way the entire production came together so seamlessly. The collaboration between the musicians, singers, and technical crew was flawless, resulting in a performance that was both emotionally moving and technically brilliant. The Theatro Municipal do Rio de Janeiro is more than just a venue; it is a cultural landmark that continues to uphold the highest standards of artistic excellence. Attending a performance here is not just an evening out; it's an opportunity to witness world-class artistry in a truly magnificent setting. I highly recommend anyone visiting Rio to check their schedule and experience the magic for themselves. It was a night I will not soon forget.

Sept.25: this was one of the many free places we visited in the Lapa area. Great historic building in middle of the Lapa area, unfortunately only seen from the outside. It has two big beautiful domes on top, which made it very photogenic. There are many bars, restaurants & great impressive other buildings nearby.

Located in Flamengo Park, central Rio de Janeiro, the Museu de Arte Moderna do Rio de Janeiro is a contemporary art museum housed in a remarkable 1954 Alfonso Eduardo Reidy building. The museum boasts striking architecture and features a water garden, as well as a theater and lecture halls. It holds an impressive collection of 20th-century works, including pieces by renowned artists such as Jackson Pollock, Di Vacalcanti, Maria Martins, Henry Moore, and others.
Impressive venue, brutalist building with unique design. We could not visit it on the inside since it was closed for refurbishment. We could only visit a branch of the building with a temporary exhibition, not impressed by those paintings. It's a must see for architecture and brutalism lovers.
Pasquale G — Google review
While wandering through the city, we stumbled upon the Museum of Modern Art (MAM) in Rio de Janeiro. This striking building immediately caught our attention with its unique architectural style. Designed by renowned Brazilian architect Affonso Eduardo Reidy in the 1950s, the museum is a masterpiece of modernist architecture, featuring open spaces and large glass panels that blend the structure with its surroundings. The entrance was free, and inside we found rotating exhibitions of contemporary art. Although I was expecting a permanent collection of modern masterpieces, the temporary exhibits were still an interesting and thought-provoking experience. Overall, MAM Rio is a great stop for art lovers and those curious about Brazil’s modernist architectural heritage. Even if you're not an art enthusiast, the building itself and its location in Flamengo Park make it worth a visit.
MarosH H — Google review
The exhibition is limited but fascinating. It’s architecture is beautiful. It seems that its gardens are unique. Though, since they were preparing a COP30 event, they didn’t give access to the garden. Isn’t this contradictory? Where is the respect to the citizens that had a public space restricted?
Mark B — Google review
A melange of paintings, a few sculptures and, the cherry on top, a modern exhibition based on lights, stroboscopic effects and threads.
Tamara C — Google review
Beautiful building. No collection but there was a very interesting exhibition about the great garden designer and landscape architect Burle Marx. The setting is beautiful in the Flamengo Park. Green surroundings. Tram stop nearby (Antonio Carlos) and not far from Lapa on foot.
Gentile P — Google review
Very unpleasant experience. From the moment we entered the 2nd floor, we were closely followed by a museum guard, which made us feel uncomfortable. One guard in particular—a young woman with long curly hair—was especially aggressive in both her expression and behavior toward us and our child. They followed us so closely that it felt intimidating. When we stepped onto a standard balcony area overlooking the 1st floor, the same guard approached us and abruptly told us we were not allowed there, speaking in a very rude manner. At that point, we decided to leave immediately. There were no English skills among the staff, and when we couldn’t speak Portuguese, the guard rolled her eyes at us as if insulted. As we left, there was no polite goodbye or thank you for our visit—only another guard following us. The whole atmosphere felt tense and uncomfortable. We had really been looking forward to this visit, but sadly we left upset and disappointed.

Very beautiful place, a must see! It was my first time in Rio and I visited a couple of the museums however, by far this is my favorite if you're into art painting sculptures whatever it is definitely check the spot out. They had dancing outside of the museum. It was very beautiful and definitely check out the wall butts lol.

They had a great expedition at times :) The location is very nice and big, easy to get to with the VLT ( Get off at Antônio Carlos and cross the big steep Bridge ) Flat area easy access with wheelchair small coffee shop for a coffee There are many shades around the building, so bring a picnic blanket if you want to spend time in the shade with the family, During the weekend there is always something happening outside, dance classes, skate, inline bikes etc. Close to walk from Marina da glória

Sugarloaf Mountain, a 396m-tall peak on a peninsula with sweeping views and accessible by cableway, is one of the most iconic rocks in the world. It offers breathtaking views of Rio de Janeiro from its peak and is accessible by a thrilling glass-walled cable car journey. Additionally, visitors can enjoy an Instagram-worthy breakfast at Parque Gloria Maria with views of Guanabara Bay and Sugarloaf Mountain.
Sugarloaf Mountain (Pão de Açúcar) offers one of the most spectacular views in Rio de Janeiro! The cable car ride to the top is smooth and exciting, revealing stunning panoramas of the city, Copacabana beach, and the Christ the Redeemer statue in the distance. At sunset, the view is absolutely magical. The mountain itself is a natural wonder, perfect for photos and unforgettable memories. Whether you’re a nature lover or sightseeing adventurer, this is a must-visit landmark in Brazil. Highly recommended!
Arto L — Google review
The most spectacular place in Rio, highly recommended. Sugar Loaf Mountain has a 360-degree view, unlike Corcovado with a limited viewpoint. Sugar Loaf offers a 360-degree view. You can see the Santos Dumont Intl. Airport and runway, the bridge to Niteroi, the beaches and neighborhoods of Ipanema, Copacabana, Botafogo, Leme and Flamengo. Your photos with such a background will be excellent. There is a cafe at the top where you can see the magnificent Copacabana.
Dimo — Google review
One of the places you must visit as a tourist in Rio. The journey to the peak is in two stages, both via cable cars. The queues move quickly and the journeys are smooth. Preferential access is available for wheelchair users. The primary reason for visiting is the views, although my visit was on a very misty day and opportunities were limited. There are plenty of toilets and places for refreshments. Also upmarket souvenir stalls. Still worth visiting on a misty day!
David S — Google review
Very good attraction. It gets really busy so be prepared to be pushing and shoving. Everybody is trying to get the best spot to record the videos. They do have nice foods and souvenir shop on top of the mountain. There is always entertainment going on like live music.

Sugarloaf in Rio offers breathtaking panoramic views of the city, beaches, and mountains, absolutely worth the visit. The cable car ride is smooth and scenic. It can get very crowded, especially during peak hours, so try to go early or on a weekday. There are a few shops and places to grab a snack at the top, but prices are a bit high. Still, the overall experience is unforgettable and a must-do while in Rio!
Russo G — Google review
The lines move fairly quickly and there are great views. You take two different cable cars to get to the top and you have a wristband with a QR code that you will repeatedly scan to go up and then back down in the cable cars. Definitely worth it for the views alone.
Heather S — Google review
We came with a group of six, the weather wasn’t the best to be honest. It was about 18° cloudy with a little bit of rain. There was no line probably because of that. However, we got our tickets pretty quickly on our way to the top. Everything was efficient and smooth, no complaints. I would do it again. Actually probably not. This is not something you do multiple times. Lol
Ebruhh K — Google review
The cable cars for the sugarloaf start from the Parque bondinho spot. There is a stopover at another mountain before you reach here. I recommend the place for stunning views of the city. You can also see the Cristo far away. On a nice and sunny day,Pão de Azuçar is the best choice. The name of the mountain comes from the Portuguese who used to get Sugar being shipped in containers which looked similar in shape of the mountains. This was narrated by our guide and not sure about the authenticity.

(Translated by Google) This is the third time I've been to this unit. The service is very standard, as it is in all restaurants. Already decide on the ingredients you want, because the pressure when choosing is great and you may end up choosing an ingredient you don't want (laughs) I ordered the Tradizionale, which includes 6 ingredients and comes with 200 grams of pasta. As for the flavor, I think it's very tasty. I always ask for extra sauce, because I don't like pasta with little sauce. On my plate I ordered leeks, bacon, turkey breast, roasted tomatoes, gorgonzola, bolognese sauce and four cheese sauce. I think it has an incredible flavor. So, here's a tip. My husband ordered the penne pasta dish. Wholemeal pasta, with 4 cheese sauce, bacon, black olives, turkey breast and gorgonzola. When finishing, I always ask for a LOT of grated cheese, so don't be shy, if you think they added too little, ask for more. They always add more cheese when requested. We ordered a dessert they call Crema de Cioccolato. I confess that I was disappointed. It looks like a chandelle, only more expensive. Anyway... I recommend the visit. Então, fica a dica. Enfim... recomendo a visita.

(Translated by Google) Spoleto's food is delicious as always, but it's becoming quite unaffordable (around R$30-40 per dish). The service is ok and the atmosphere is ok, very friendly. However, what I noticed and didn't like was the lack of cleanliness on the table, and the tray they used for my order was DIRTY before they even put the plate on it... unpleasant. Bar do Mineiro is a renowned local bar located in the vibrant neighborhood of Santa Teresa in Rio de Janeiro. It has been serving up traditional Brazilian dishes and drinks since the 1980s, making it a beloved institution for both locals and tourists. The menu features hearty plates of meaty dishes, including the famous feijoada, as well as delicious pasteis filled with cheese, meat, beans or shrimp.
Bar do Mineiro is the perfect stop in Santa Teresa! Everything we order was amazing! We had the Feijoada (delicious!), the porção mista de pastéis, Queijo coalho a milanesa, Frango a passarinha, Feijoada Caldo and Vaca atolada Caldo. Would eat everything again now ;) The service was great, food came out fast and I love the Santa Teresa vibes. We walked from here to Parque das ruínas and to escadaria Selaron. I would recommend ubering as it can be hard finding parking in the area.

Very nice, chilled restaurant if you want something traditional and tasty for lunch. Enjoyed the pork chops with rice and fajolada, which was great. They only had one type of croquettes with beans inside a very little meat, which tasted okay but were not amazing. Would still recommend paying a visit here!

Do you know when can you eat bones? When it has been cooked in the stew for so long that its calcium breaks down and flavour comes out. This is how I know I have had one of the best stews in my life, not just the best Feijoada. The stew does not cheat - plenty of meat, sausage and beans cooked just to the right texture. The sides were perfect complements to the stew, especially the orange slices with the sauce - yes I ate it that way and saucéed the plate with it. The staff is friendly, attentive and under the classical music backdrop I was losing my mind as I had my meal. Nothing touches the soul of a sick traveller better than such a stew on a rainy day.

Restaurant
Restaurante Cervantes is a popular casual-dining spot renowned for its generous and flavorful sandwiches, each accompanied by a slice of pineapple. The original branch in Copacabana has retained its old-school charm, attracting a mix of locals and famous personalities. With both sit-down and stand-up bar areas, it offers a lively atmosphere where patrons can enjoy hearty meals and drinks until the early hours.
Great place for family meal, reasonable price, one of the best places in town to have traditional Brazil food. Beef Ribeye is always excellent, although we ordered it everyday during our stay. By the way, thank you for the free pulled pork sample, it tasted very good!
Chen K — Google review
Lovely place with AC and not at all busy around 6pm on a week night. We got a little confused reading the menu, but eventually ordered a pork and pineapple sandwich. I was worried it might be dry, but it was juicy. We also tried the filet mignon with pineapple and pate sandwich. The beef was also tender, but the liver pate didn't really add to it. You can order without. Of the two, I prefer the pork. The mojito was on the sweet side with not enough mint. The staff was patient and friendly.
Angela T — Google review
We chose this place for lunch as we were looking for something quick and tasty. We had some difficultly placing our order which of no fault of the restaurant but my non existent Portuguese. The staff persevered and tried hard to understand. The sandwiches arrived and looked great, except for the egg on my son’s which looked very well cooked. The portions were great but just lacked the flavour I was looking for.
Trent B — Google review
Great experience. The foods our tour guide ordered for us tasted good. I’d like to come back on my own and try more things. The pork looked tasty.
T M — Google review
Came here based on a recommendation from a friend and my family and I were very happy with the good. Sandwiches are very big and feeling, potatoe salad wasn’t too bad and the sausage was very good. Also ordered cheese fries that were very good. Service was very good and we had a very friendly waiter who took his time with us as we didn’t speak Portuguese.
Francisco D — Google review
Cervantes was once a legend for late night meals. The waiters used to dress in old school uniforms — and were very efficient (though also not particularly talkative). What I most loved was the simple, impeccable food and chief among the best dishes on the menu was Cervantes’ signature sandwich: thickly sliced roast beef, pate and grilled caramelised pineapple. This evening I returned to Cervantes after many years and my first impression was how shabby the place looked. It was no longer charming but just cheap — most notably the hideous ceiling and faux brick walls. Anyway, I ordered the roast beef sandwich and asked the waiter three times (on my translator) if the pineapple was grilled. Each time he gave me the thumbs up sign signifying yes. However, what arrived was a poor version of the original sandwich with wet, sloppy pineapple in the middle. I never send things back but this time, frustrated that I had asked three times about the sandwich, I did. A long time later the sandwich came back. It looked even worse the second time. Really really disappointing.

Chose the place while strolling down the street Thought of having few drinks and something to bite, opted for open tables. Service was prompt and drinks were served cold But the food was below average. Ordered Garlic beef steak but couldn't find any taste or flavor of same. It was just bland don't think it was marinated at all. Total disappointment And restroom was like a metal can just like in trains Not recommended
Deva K — Google review
My partner and I shared a pernil sándwich here. It was interesting we were looking for something local. The signature sandwich is huge, so you better not go alone. I like the sandwich but was nothing special, it good to see locals enjoye them. Mix of pork meat, pineapple and cheese. Service was exceptional, prices in my view, a bit high, but Rio is pricey! Go try try them!

Restaurante Jambeiro is a pleasant and calm dining spot located in the park. Despite low expectations, visitors were pleasantly surprised by the delicious food and good service. The rice with salmon was particularly tasty and rich. Guests also praised the excellent pizzas, drinks, and agreeable live music. Overall, it's a great place for top-notch food in a nice atmosphere.
It's a nice, calm pleasant location in the park. Just like the review below by Javier, I wasn't expecting a lot outside of the atmosphere. But was surprised by the good food .... and nice service. The rice I had with my salmon was very tasty, rich.

Shopping
The Botafogo Praia Shopping mall is one of the largest in the neighbourhood, and it has a wide range of stores, including some of the best designer outlets. It also includes several food outlets and a cinema theatre.
By far my favorite shopping mall in Rio de Janeiro. It has an spectacular view to the Botafogo Bay & Marina area and the Sugarloaf Mountains. It's very well organized and safe, with a convenient multiple floors parking system (with automatic machines for payment). There's an app for convenience. There are several restaurants and coffee shops here, including at least 2 big food courts and several smaller areas for dining along the floors. Aside from eating, visitors can expect a cinema, several stores and services in general, of course, including a drugstore and a small co-working space. It's a pet-friendly shopping mall. It's totally worth the visit any day of the week, but specially on weekdays.
Hanike T — Google review
The stores are excellent. But it’s ludicrous that there are only two widely separated elevators one of which is often out of service and badly placed placed escalators
Jake — Google review
The food in the restaurant is good and affordable, but the best perk of the place is definitely the view..
Atanas V — Google review
The reviews here keep complaining about stairs but this mall has ELEVATORS AND ESCALATORS! The comments about "stairs stairs stairs" for 8 floors of shopping scared me off but I went there today and was pleased to say I found this mall to be the best mall in Rio for tourists. It was cleaner, more organized and featured many American fast food and restaurants : McDonald's, Burger King, Subway, Outback and Taco Bell. It even has a theater on the 8th floor. The view from. The 8th floor btw is excellent for Sugarloaf Mountain and the adjacent lake where the boats/yachts are parked/anchored. Not sure again why everyone is complaining... It's a great mall! The other "tourist mall" is more like an outlet mall compared to this place
Ormand D — Google review
Decent mall. Not too many options but has some selections for clothing, perfume/cosmetics, and food. Two of my favorites about this mall is that they have a area for coworking and a view of the city at the top - so cool!
Leonard — Google review
Because of the vertical nature of this mall, it might take some time to find out a particular store. Plus, there restaurants and eateries are spread around multiple floors, which can be confusing. Still, this mall has two things going for it. First, its location is very convenient and it is easily accessible from Botafogo hotels. Second, its top floor has an amazing view of the Guanabara Bay. It is breathtakingly beautiful in a clear day.

Nature & Parks
Copacabana Beach is an iconic 2.2-mile stretch of sandy coastline with a bustling promenade, food kiosks, and hotels. The beach extends for about 4km and offers a lively atmosphere with soccer players, locals, and tourists enjoying caipirinhas at the kiosks. Visitors can also witness kids showcasing their soccer skills and beach vendors selling various items. It's recommended to check the water quality before swimming due to occasional contamination after heavy rainfall.
Copacabana Beach is iconic! Stunning views, soft sand, and lively atmosphere make it a must-visit. Great for a swim, relaxing, or enjoying local street food. Vendors are friendly, and the vibe is electric, especially at sunset. Safe if you stay aware. An unforgettable Rio experience!
Zachery D — Google review
By far the best beach in the refion. It's lively both at day and night. Free showers are also up for grabs and there are several spots where you can rent an umbrella and/or chairs for a fair price.
Filip M — Google review
Copacabana Beach in Rio de Janeiro is everything you imagine it to be — and more! The moment you step onto the soft golden sand, you can feel the vibrant energy that makes this beach world-famous. The stunning curve of the coastline, framed by lush green hills and the rhythmic sound of the Atlantic waves, creates a picture-perfect scene that feels straight out of a postcard. What makes Copacabana so special is the unique blend of relaxation and excitement. In the mornings, it’s peaceful and ideal for a refreshing swim or a quiet walk along the promenade. As the day goes on, the beach comes alive with locals playing volleyball and football, vendors selling refreshing coconut water, and musicians adding a joyful samba rhythm to the air. The iconic black-and-white wave-patterned boardwalk is another highlight — perfect for strolling, cycling, or simply soaking in the view of the sea and city skyline. There are plenty of beachfront cafés and kiosks where you can enjoy delicious Brazilian snacks and fresh juices while watching the sunset paint the sky in shades of orange and pink. Copacabana Beach isn’t just a place — it’s an experience of Rio’s soul: warm, lively, and unforgettable. Whether you go to relax, meet people, or simply admire the breathtaking scenery, it’s a destination that leaves a lasting impression. Highly recommended for anyone visiting Rio — Copacabana is pure magic. 🇧🇷✨

Sept.25: We went to the famous Copacabana Beach. We taught it would be crowded as it was weekend, however this wasn't the case. There were a lot of local vendors selling all kinds of stuff & many different food, icecreams & drinks. Some brought a complete umbrella with bikinis & thongs as well as really nice looking grilled big scampis (we didn't try as we didn't know how long they were exposed to sun, etc.) & many more. As we need to get the Copacabana beach vipe, we bought a 700ML freshly pressed lime caipirinha. Delicious, but with the sun & almost on an empty stomach; I got hit very fast. In the far we saw Christ the Redeemer (big, famous Jezus statue of 30 m height on a hill), we hope to visit one of these days.

Here's a good review of Copacabana beach: Copacabana is more than just a beach; it's the vibrant, beating heart of Rio de Janeiro. The moment you step onto its famous wave-patterned promenade, you feel an electric energy. The 4km stretch of sand is a democratic playground for everyone—you'll see intense games of footvolley, locals sunbathing, and tourists sipping água de coco from the countless kiosks. The view is spectacular, with the curving bay framed by Sugarloaf Mountain on one end. It’s a must-see for its sheer iconic status and incredible people-watching, capturing the city's lively spirit perfectly.
Rahul R — Google review
One of the famous beaches in the world was worth visiting. A fairly clean that has many things to offer - from food stalls to watching people play volleyball, soccer and other games, enjoying a nice drink, snacks and food. A good place to get your morning or afternoon walk/run as well. A safe place compared to some parts of Rio. From good to excellent hotels across the beach.
Ali K — Google review
This is really a world class beach with a party ambiance. The waves could get a bit strong (could knock your glasses or sunglasses off so do have a clip or tie). The sand is fine and white. The view of the mountains add to the zen.

Loved this beach, it is great for long walks, it’s clean enough, it’s possible to see a beautiful sunset there. Really liked the fact that it was possible to pay by card for sunbeds, umbrellas and drinks. It’s often very busy there and I loved that vibe.

Step into the Museu Histórico Nacional, a former military fort turned national history museum in Brazil. Housed in the colonial arsenal dating back to 1764, this impressive museum showcases relics from Brazil's founding to its early days as a republic. With over 300,000 items on display, including gilded imperial coaches and massive oil paintings depicting historical events, it offers insights into Brazil's colonial past, empire era, and the early years of the Republic.
Great Museum with the right balance of Brazilian history and diversity. I visited this place many years ago and it has nothing lost of the fascination and details. Our sons loved it and enjoy the family friendly trip. The Museum is well organized and safe. During the weekend the Center in Rio is empty and it is strongly suggested to arrive by taxi.

This place is enormous, and well worth checking out. It's housed in a beautiful old building with an interior courtyard, there are multiple levels. Incredible building, great use of space. I got the lunch special of the peixe grelhado, but instead of being grilled it was fried. Feijão, not pictured was really good in contrast to the rice that was dry. Also the salad is very small in comparison to the rice and fries portions. Ambience is also a bit loyt with the traffic 20 ft from the restaurant.

We like that servers come around with trays of tapas like food but food came barely warm even when requested hot.. very disappointed. We did enjoyed the pernil (pork) sandwich with crispy fries, good flavor served temperature hot. Servers are nice and located right across the beach.

Avoid this bar at all costs! They scam their customers with a ridiculous "music fee" hidden in tiny print on the last page of the menu. It's not even for live music—just some kid hitting play on a playlist. Absolute rip-off. They lure you in with cheap prices, but once you're inside, the service is unbearably slow, the staff are rude and aggressive, and the caipirinhas are terrible. The whole place feels unwelcoming and shady. There are so many better options nearby. Don’t waste your time or money here—stay far away!

It's a popular choice for vegetarians and those seeking healthier alternatives to traditional Brazilian cuisine.
The first Delirio in Town, this is a fantastic place for good fresh sandwiches and salads. Excellent variety and good price, service is efficient but because it is great it gets busy in lunch time, avoid arriving after 12:30! but cues are dealt quickly and you only pay after eating! Nestled in the Sao Jose market, Botero is a lively bar named after the renowned Colombian artist Fernando Botero. The establishment exudes a prohibition-era American speakeasy vibe with its windowless facade. Unlike other no-frills bars in the city, this spot stands out for its creative take on local dishes by the young owner and head chef, Bruno Magalhaes.
This is one of my favorite bars in Rio. Not only the drinks are good, but the food is amazing! They also have weekly events.

Botero has moved from its old location in the covered market to this nice old building not far from Praça São Salvador. The menu is just as great as it ever was - the pasteis are totally amazing, with delicious fillings you don't see in most other locations (beef rib with Bordelaise sauce; cheese with caramelised red onions, etc). The acoustics are a little harsh so it may get noisy during busy periods, and perhaps the lighting could be a little softer, but as with any move, I'm sure these details will be ironed out in time.

I used to go to this restaurant in London very often, the quality there was superb. Not too long ago I've been to the on in Ipanema. To my surprise, I found the sauce, one of the trademark of the franchise, very different tasting much more like mustard than the one I was used to. This franchise at shopping da Gávea reproduced the sauce almost in perfection. Congratulations, I felt like was was back in time. The idea of the restaurant is very simple: eat as much fries as you want and a portion of meat ranging from 180 to 220 g. They have a half a liter freshling squeezed juice jar that is a good choice for drinking healthy.
Daniel G — Google review
The service was bad and not comparable at all to Geneva or Paris. The waiter was quite stand-offish. Tried to order a beer, and he just said they were out of stock without giving me the opportunity to order something else. Instead, he brought two glasses with my girlfriends lemonade. We wanted to order a starter and main each, but the waiter kept on walking away mid-order. This meant we ordered less because we couldn’t keep his attention long enough. We did not feel welcome. Not sure if we were meant to get a refill of chips with our food but this was also not offered

I went with my 2 kids and husband. We were told that a table would be available in 1hr. I came back in 30 minutes and found out that they were giving our spot to other people so we complained and they sat us down. The lady never texted me that 2 tables were available. After forever the waiter came, he was grumpy and 3 foods we asked for were not available, like the brie gratin. After not getting good service, we decided to have desserts only. They would not bring us utensils or drinks but we still stayed and had some coffee. The desserts and coffee were ok nothing special. When was time to pay, the grumpy waiter gave us a big smile. Moral of the story: "The only French thing about this restaurant was the service!".

Due to its strategic location near the city's bus terminal and ferry service to Rio, the mall experiences high pedestrian activity, attracting numerous street vendors in its vicinity.
It could be a better place when the lift is working. I've been in Niterói for 1 month, and the full month never has the lift been working! Accessibility ♿️ for all Wheelchair is super bad. users can't use the lift, and there was no other way to get to the second floor to use the ATM machines. I'm very disappointed. Lots of shops and stalls and places to chill on the second floor. Atm in the building
Dayana A — Google review
Reasonably clean and safe place. It's not a "shopping center" in the strict sense of the word (too little variety and rather small for that). Also, parking is rather expensive, there are better options nearby.
Durval M — Google review
Small shopping mall. It's a nice place to find cheap groceries and some electronic accessories. Food court is okay with no special restaurants or anything different from the region. Bathrooms are clean and big with numerous toilets, bad signs to find them though. Prices are a little higher than usual but, it's okay. Good place to have a quick meal or to buy common things.

Great view of Rio but, a very poor selection of stores available. It also looks like a dodgy area because of its surroundings.

The pricing is great, but it doesn't have a great selection of stores, can get easily overcrowded and recently there been having armed robbery there on Fridays and Saturdays, so it's best to avoid the place these days.

Art museum
Museums
The Museu de Arte Contemporânea de Niterói is a must-visit for art and architecture enthusiasts. Designed by the renowned architect Oscar Niemeyer, this iconic modernist building offers panoramic views and an impressive collection of contemporary art.
To be honest, we didn’t come for the art - we came for the architecture. As one of Oscar Niemeyer’s most iconic and celebrated creations, this building doesn’t just house the art; it is THE art. In fact, its sweeping curves and bold presence utterly eclipse whatever hangs on the walls inside. Standing before it, in this breathtaking setting, is a five-star experience - no, beyond five stars. The exhibition within? A mere whisper compared to the thunderous poetry of the structure itself. While the price of admission is more than reasonable, the absence of a functioning e-payment system made for a rather unconventional and even bizarre solution. To get the cash to purchase the tickets, I was advised to buy from the coconut vendor on the street, then ask him to charge “extra” on my credit card in return for cash reals. It was such a first world meets third world situation! Every aspect of the MAC is photogenic. The blazing Rio sun and clear skies helped. We lingered for two hours both on the inside and out. And after that we lingered even further with a meal at the delicious Bistrô MAC with its panoramic view of Guanabara Bay. It was an amazing way to spend a Sunday afternoon!
Eddie C — Google review
You have to visit MAC of you’re in Niterói/Icarai. What a cool building! And the fact that something as cool as this is from the 90s? Wow… Worth the visit. Free entry on Wednesdays. They have one artist exposition at a time.
Jeremy M — Google review
Beautiful museum, the building per se is an art piece!!! The views are amazing. The exhibitions were nice, I expected more from this museum to be honest. Permanent collection was nice but quite small. The temporary exhibition regarding costumes from the Carnival, really beautiful. Also, I would love to have a proper exhibition regarding the building per se, the process, construction, and so on, currently there are only a few pictures of the construction that’s it.
Ulises B — Google review
It’s an interesting building with great views, but to call this an “art museum” would be a complete joke. The inside of the building is completely empty and the little art that it does have feels dull, boring, and lacks any creativity. The top floor was also under renovation and restricted access. The staff are also quite rude and they require visitors to store all bags, no matter how small in size, in several lockers they say you’re “obligated” to use. To contrast, the outside of the building is free to walk up to and way more interesting than the museum itself. Calling this an observation deck would be a more appropriate title.
Manatee S — Google review
One of the best locations ever for a modern art museum. The sensuous, modernist, iconic masterpiece by the unparalleled Niemeyer takes full advantage of the wonderful vista of the picture-perfect Rio de Janeiro’s bay in a rare symbiosis of Architecture and Nature. The interior is equally rewarding; the circular - rotunda style echoing Lloyd Wright’s New York’s Guggenheim. You won’t forget the experience.
Carlos O — Google review
The epitome of elegant architecture! The art showcases were beautifully laid out and the museum was very accessible!
Blake R — Google review
Amazing architecture. The art exhibition was beautiful. I loved the proposed walking circuit by the architect. Ticket prices are fair $16 reales per person, you CANT PAY WITH CARD, it’s either purchasing tickets at the reception with cash or online.

Niterói Shopping is a popular mall in Niterói, Brazil, offering retail shops, boutiques, restaurants, services, and a movie theater. While located across Guanabara Bay from Rio de Janeiro, Niterói attracts crowds to its beautiful beaches like Itacoatiara Beach.
An old fashion nice traditional shopping. You might get fascinated by transiting its halls and feel past times atmosphere. Some shops and restos are jewels to visit. Wish it gets reactivated and back to its good times.

If you're looking to spend an entire day shopping for Christmas, this mall is the ultimate destination. It’s got every kind of shop you could possibly need, from festive decorations to the perfect gift for everyone on your list. You could easily lose track of time here, hopping from one store to the next in search of the perfect holiday treasures. But when your feet start to ache or you need a little break from the hustle and bustle, no worries—there’s plenty of space to unwind. With benches scattered throughout, cozy restaurants, and lively bars, you can relax and soak in the sunny, laid-back atmosphere. It’s the perfect balance of shopping and leisure, all wrapped up in one merry place!

This shopping has a lot of movement on the weekdays. In my opinion, they could make a better use of the stores and increase the income if they could invest more in marketing. People usually go to the comercial part of the building and the stores are pretty much empty.

This is Niteroi, and Mercado Sao Pedro is the fish market. This market caters to greater Rio de Janeiro. Many famous Chefs source their fish here. There are over 50 stalls in this market and they have a very vast selection of fresh fish. The place is clean and well kept. Though it smells fishy. Of course ,it's the fish market. Fridays and Saturdays the place is crowded and you see a lot of families strolling around. To add to this ,there's the 1st floor with a lot of restaurants that serve fish , getting a table and a stool could be a bit tricky ,but worth it. You could also buy your fish and get it cooked at these restaurants, for a fee.

Good bars and restaurants along the seafront really make this area a great one for a night out (Friday and Sunday appear to be the big weekend nights). If you're in the mood for some Brazilian barbecue, Mocellin Churrascaria is the place to go. With a wide selection of dishes that include steak, chicken, and pork, there's something for everyone. You can also enjoy sushi and other South American specialties here. And if you're looking to get a little naughty late at night, this place has you covered with its private dining options.
A true 5-star experience. The variety of meat offered from the churrasco and the delicious sides offered are so full of taste. This Rodízio has ruined all my experiences with other Rodízios. I absolutely love this restaurant.

Fantastic service, the best sushi that I’ve had in Brazil, not to speak of the meats. Delicious cupim, cordeiro, costela. Carpaccio: fantastic. Mixed drinks are prepared at the table. Very fresh salad bar options. Ambience is very elegant, and the view upfront is also wonderful.

One of the best steakhouses I've been in Brazil. Buffet is weak, but strong meat selection (which is what matters anyways)

Wow fantastic resturant and service and food. I would totally recommend anyone in the area to go. Top quality food and wine.

Excellent Churrasco. Sadly, the chicken salad offered in the buffet wasn't good anymore and gave me the sh*ts for three days. Meat was really good though, so maybe just watch out what could be bad and Zou could be fine.

Pão de Açúcar is a supermarket located in the Urca neighborhood, near Praia Vermelha. It's known for its fresh fruits and vegetables, pharmacy, and reasonably priced restaurant. The bakery next to the restaurant offers delicious options like Ciabatta with buffalo mozzarella. While it has great opening hours and a wide variety of products, shopping late at night may result in long queues. Despite being considered expensive by some, it offers unique products that are hard to find elsewhere.
This is one of the best supermarkets I've ever been to. They have fresh fruits and vegetables, a pharmacy and a restaurant as well. The food at the restaurant is reasonably priced and if you don't feel like eating at it, there's a bakery right next to it. My favourite choice at the bakery is the Ciabatta with buffalo mozzarella! Most supermarkets could learn from this one.

They have good offers , products hard to find in other markets but they have it too . The best thing they are opening until 11 pm .

Caminho Niemeyer is an 11-kilometer long cultural center located along the Niteroi coast, featuring a collection of imaginative and organic buildings designed by the renowned Brazilian architect Oscar Niemeyer. The area serves as a showcase of his work, including the modernist concrete curves of the Teatro Popular and other structures. It was created to revitalize the region and has become a prominent venue for art, history, and culture.
Fascinating cluster of buildings designed by the legendary Oscar Niemeyer - the largest group outside Brasilia. Wonderful free tours available from the visitor center take you inside the buildings.

A must for any architecture lover. Niteroi has the biggest collection of Niemeyer works in Brazil after Brasilia. Students there offer free guided tour in English and they're amazing Very attentive and knowledgeable. Our guide was Fransceils. She shared so much of the Brazilian culture with us too!

This is one of the best architecture collections you can visit for free in the world. CAMINHO NIEMEYER is a must, if you're visiting Rio. To get here, i strongly suggest crossing the bay with Barcas (the ferry), walk 5 minutes and enjoy. After, you should go to MAC Niterói, and then to Parque da Cidade, which is the best option for the sunset time.

Siri de Niterói is a seafood restaurant located in the up-and-coming Charitas neighbourhood of Niteroi, Rio de Janeiro. Chinese restaurant
Cantón is a unique and well-decorated place with an excellent location and open area. The service is friendly, but there are some issues with the sound in the women's bathroom and the ambient music volume. The drinks like limoncello and mint are highly recommended, as well as the dumplings and pork belly options. The ceviche at Cantón is described as the best ever eaten, especially when paired with the refreshing green dragon drink.
(Translated by Google) The place is spacious and well decorated, creating a pleasant atmosphere, located in front of the beach, with indoor and outdoor tables. The service was great. The waiter who served us was very friendly, and he or others were always coming to collect our empty plates. We were surprised at how quickly our orders came out of the kitchen, both for starters and main courses. We ordered the classic ceviche and the fried wontons (a pork and chicken dumpling). Both were very good, the dumpling dough was very crispy, but without that strong fried taste, and the ceviche was both spicy and refreshing, served with a generous portion of chips and corn. For our main course, we ordered the octopus canton and the cruyoc (breaded pork), again both delicious, but the octopus in particular was simply sensational. The pork is accompanied by a sweet tamarind sauce that goes perfectly with the citrus of the pineapple, while the octopus comes with soft rustic potatoes, broccoli and a very good type of mayonnaise. I must admit that the dessert options seemed a bit limited, but the chocolate cake we ordered was very moist and tasty, with a peanut praline that reminded me of peanut brittle. The drinks we ordered (one made with vodka and lychee and the other with white wine and passion fruit) were refreshing. Maybe a little weak in alcohol, but for me that's a bonus. Overall, a great experience. I plan on going back with other people, and I already know that I'll order the octopus.

I ordered a mapo tofu but I was surprised by the fact that it contained no trace of Sichuan peppers whatsoever. It wasn't bad, but it's like making feijão without beans - it's pretending to be something it's not. I'm not even sure the chef aware that it's supposed to be made with Sichuan peppercorns, so I'll chalk this up to ignorance.

(Translated by Google) I liked it. It's different. The place is well decorated. The location is excellent. It has an open area. The service is friendly. The sound in the women's bathroom is loud. It's quite annoying. The background music could be lower and the songs could be more in line with the restaurant's theme. I had a drink with limoncello and mint, which was very good. As a starter, I ordered a dumpling and an option with pork belly. Both were exactly what you'd expect from a good dumpling and a good pork belly. For dessert, I ordered a fried bread filled with ice cream. The toppings for this dessert (lychee, mango and chocolate) worked very well. But I didn't like the bread. The ice cream stuck to the bread dough, making it look like undercooked bread. Anyway, I think there's room for improvement in this recipe. The rest of the experience was very good. Oh, and be prepared. The experience is expensive. (Original) Curti. Diferente. Local é bem decorado. Localização é excelente. Tem área aberta. Atendimento gentil. O som do banheiro feminino está estourado. Incomoda bastante. Ah, prepare o bolso. A experiência é cara.

It took me a while to visit after hearing from more than one person that the prices were steep, but I disagreed (my pork belly dish was R$58, lower than several other popular restaurants in the surrounding area and Icaraí). Besides the pleasant and spacious atmosphere, the service is very attentive, and the options are interesting and well-executed. I will definitely return. It brought back memories of our Asian years, even if the seasoning lacked a bit of spice. The only thing I didn't really like was the lychee caipirinha, which was quite bland. (Original) Comida muito boa, atendimento excelente e ambiente de acordo. Boa experiência e alternativa pra sair do “normal”. Deu pra relembrar um pouco dos nossos anos de Ásia, mesmo que tenha faltado um pouco do “ardido” no tempero. A única coisa que eu não gostei mesmo foi da caipirinha de lichia, bem insossa.

(Translated by Google) About the food: as an appetizer I ordered pork belly with bread. The dish itself surprised me with its simplicity and well-balanced taste. It was like putting together a mini burger because it comes with a salad and sauces, and the pork belly was very well prepared. I was surprised. The radish that comes with it is also very good, reminiscent of the ginger shavings you get at a Japanese restaurant. The oyster sauce was ok, but different, I thought it went well. For the main course I ordered fried rice with chicken. I didn't like this dish because it had something very salty in it, I think it was the chicken. It also tasted like yakisoba. It wasn't really what I expected. By the end of the dish I was quite thirsty and needed something to soothe the taste in my mouth. Dessert - I ordered fried ice cream. It's fried bread dough with ice cream inside. It comes with a white chocolate sauce that, if I'm not mistaken, had a fruity flavor, which by the way was very good. It could have had more. The dish has lychee with mango and a little chocolate around it. It was a very interesting combination. Drinks - not only does it have a good drinks menu, but also some signature ones. I ordered a Brasil sour, I thought the presentation was beautiful and the taste was very good too. I ordered it without the syrup because I prefer it without sugar, and it was still very good. Me surpreendi.

Pizza restaurant
At Don Carlo's Pizza Gourmet, the traditional Italian dish gets a sophisticated treatment served in an atmospheric and modern setting. In addition, the fifth floor lounge and live jazz make it an excellent choice for a night out in Niteroi.
Really great restaurant that offers a huge variety of specialty pizzas (and other dishes). Love the thin crust pizza and a large is plenty to split for two people. Menu was well organized, really creative decor and intimate areas to dine, along with friendly staff. Virginia was a wonderful waitress that was attentive and made many helpful suggestions. Planning to go back before our trip to Niteroi ends!

Good Pizza, I recommend the Don Carlos - it's ~R 70 and tastes good, although it is sufficient for two. The restaurant itself is cozy and welcoming. Service can be a little bit on the slow side if you don't manage to get the waiters attention, however, once you order, the food arrives relatively fast. If staying in Niteroi, this is a good restaurant to try out!

She is always attentive, ensuring that all our needs are met promptly and with a smile. Her knowledge of the menu and her recommendations have always been spot on, enhancing our enjoyment of the delicious pizzas and other gourmet offerings. The ambiance at Don Carlos is cozy and inviting, making it a perfect spot for a casual meal or a special occasion. The ingredients are fresh, and the flavors are rich and authentic. Whether you’re a local or just visiting Niterói, I highly recommend stopping by Don Carlos Pizza Gourmet. I recently had the pleasure of dining at Don Carlos Pizza Gourmet, and it was an experience to remember! The ambiance of the restaurant is inviting and stylish, perfect for a cozy meal with friends or family. What truly set this visit apart, however, was the extraordinary service we received from our waiter, Samuel. From the moment we walked in, Samuel made us feel welcome and attended to our every need with a genuine smile. His knowledge of the menu was impressive, and his recommendations were spot on. The food was absolutely delicious – the gourmet pizzas were a delightful blend of fresh ingredients and creative flavors. Each bite was a testament to the culinary expertise of the chefs. But it was Samuel's attentive and friendly service that elevated our dining experience to a whole new level. If you’re looking for a place with top-notch food and outstanding service, Don Carlos Pizza Gourmet is the place to go. A huge thank you to Samuel for making our visit so special. We’ll definitely be back!

Ponte Pres. Costa e Silva, also known as the Rio-Niterói Bridge, is an impressive 8.26-mile concrete bridge connecting Rio de Janeiro and Niterói. The bridge offers stunning views of Guanabara Bay and its surroundings, including the iconic Christ the Redeemer statue, Corcovado Mountain, and Maracana Stadium.
I saw this from a boat at night and went under it. It is amazing. Really can recommend this.

Most of the time the bridge is overwhelmed with traffic, especially because of the tool. I've never took the ferry but looks like a good option.
Erik S — Google review
Blow the bridge up now it's completely pointless (unless you like 90 minutes of traffic). The toll booth builds up that much traffic it makes it renders the bridge completely pointless. Get the boat, quicker and less stressful

Hello travellers.I crossed this bridge since young. We have a beach house in Região dos Lagos for more than fourty years now.I remember very cool and small roads back then.I kept crossing all my life,it got busy.In 2005 I had a job in Maricá-rj,I had to pass here about four times a week.It became from a trip and vacations to a necessary road and route to my job.I crossed by bus, either 996 charitas, always catched right by my house in Humaitá,rj,zona sul, lagoa and crossing the bridge and arriving in Niterói where I catched another bus to my town,.Maricá.Mostly I catched Nossa sra. Amparo by novo rio terminal and made the straight trip to Maricá,passing through this bridge. The bridge is cool, the bus afraid us,runs a lot,is tall and run by the limits and fences, very short, appearing can fall fifty meters all the time.Bit if you go by car,it´s cool, you choose your lane, your speed and pay the obeyed fare right before arriving in Niterói. There is the mount, the hill ,where the boats passes, the huge freight and oil parked inside our bay, made built a huge hill with rj-sp airplanes curving right close to the top. The traffic is huge, looks like a hell or crowd, maybe a good solution is build the subway between the cities. Good trip.

The Royal Portuguese Reading Room is a stunning library in Neo-Manueline style, featuring ornate decor and an extensive collection of volumes by Portuguese authors. It is considered one of the most beautiful libraries in the world and offers a rich cultural experience for visitors. The three-story-tall bookshelves, intricate architecture, dramatic stained-glass dome, and sparkling chandelier create an enchanting atmosphere for avid readers to relax with a book.
The Portuguese Royal Library in Rio de Janeiro is an absolute treasure and one of the most beautiful places I’ve ever seen. The moment you walk in, you’re instantly captivated by its grandeur and atmosphere. Towering shelves, carved wooden details, soft lighting — it truly feels like stepping into a fairy tale or a historical film. Even if you’re not a book lover, this place is worth visiting for its architecture, energy, and sense of history. You’ll want to stay longer, take in every detail, breathe in the scent of old books, and simply enjoy the peacefulness. An absolutely magical place — a must-visit in Rio!

If you’re a book lover this is a must visit if you’re in Rio. This book lovers dream houses over 350,000 volumes including rare pieces from the 16th to 18th centuries. Come early as it gets super busy. The gothic architecture is visual overload and you could spend over an hour here just taking in the atmosphere. Only open on weekdays.

The place is iconic and is worthy the visit. One of the most beautiful libraries I have ever been. Because is in the centre of Rio is safer to go by Uber. The staff could be more friendly but the woman working there just look unhappy. But we can’t do anything with those unhappy people. I highly recommend this stunning place.

Thoroughly disappointing. On our return from lovely Ubatuba (thank you, Charles, for the loan of your fabulous beach house and extremely attentive staff!) I got conned into going here by a bibliofile friend of Ursula’s. the place was crowded and really there is nothing to see of value. I was gasping for a drink too.
Sir S — Google review
If you haven't yet had the chance to visit this library, I highly recommend making it a priority during your time in Rio. This incredible place is truly a sight to behold, with a soaring ceiling and an endless sea of vibrantly colored books that surround you. It's nothing short of amazing! However, I must caution that the area in which the library is located can be a bit rough. While I wouldn't discourage anyone from visiting, it's essential to exercise extra caution and be aware of your surroundings. All things considered, the library is an absolute must-visit for book lovers and anyone who appreciates stunning architecture and design. If you have the opportunity to see it in person, I cannot recommend it highly enough.

Museum
Specialty Museums
Nestled in the heart of Rio de Janeiro, the Museu Nacional de Belas Artes is a treasure trove for art enthusiasts. This fine arts museum showcases an impressive collection of both national and international masterpieces, with a particular focus on Brazilian artists from the 19th and 20th centuries. The museum's architecture draws inspiration from Paris's Louvre, creating an eclectic atmosphere that enhances your visit.
Sunning museum filled with world renowned pieces of fine arts from around the world but with a focus towards highlighting local Brazilian artists who have gained prominence in the recent years. An absolutely extensive collection with art from many different eras and time periods, from 3d sculptures, to modern art selections, to traditional oil paintings. The facilities are relatively modest and only some exhibits have air conditioning which is a great relief if you need a break from the hot Brazilian summers. Restrooms are not clearly marked or easy to navigate but are adequate. Admission price is unbeatable at a price of absolutely free although you do have to store any bags at the coat check. Some special exhibits also require lines and long waits. Waited almost 45 minutes for a special exhibit only to not be very impressed at the small gallery inside.
Victor W — Google review
Interesting collection of imperial and contemporary art. Cost R8 to get in. Well worth it. Contains the largest painting ever commissioned in Brazil. Make sure you ask for a headset guide. It wasn’t offered to me, so I didn’t even know it was an option until too late.

Amazing fine arts' museum. Many galleries showcasing national and international paintings. There is a sculpture gallery and temporary exhibitions as well. What I like the most is the the Battle of Avaí painting which was painted in small parts to make an amazing 600cm x 1100cm mega painting. If you're in Rio, I'm a local guide here. Feel free to get in touch with me through any social media: @DEBOMZAI

Nice museum with many different rooms where can you can find different modern art and classic Brazilian art from 19th and early 20th. If you are in the area, I strongly recommend to pay a visit !

A very neat building in a great part of Rio to explore. The collection itself was not very big or diverse, but they have several worthwhile pieces. Right now they have hashtags beneath a lot of the paintings, which to me was a bit tacky but also pretty funny (things like #selfie under self portraits). There is a small admission fee to enter.

Hiking Trails
Pista Cláudio Coutinho is a delightful and scenic trail located near Praia Vermelha, offering a short but beautiful hike through native jungle. The wide and shady path follows the coast alongside Sugarloaf, providing opportunities to observe local birdlife such as tanagers, vultures, and hummingbirds. Visitors may also encounter marmosets and rock skinks along the way.
I went up with the cablecar, and then Hiked my way down and back up. Perfect to escape the crowd from the sugarloaf mountain for a while, you need to be back up at 17 o clock or they close the gate, even if it says 17u30 they close at 17u but becausd i had my wristband on wich proved that i came by cabelcar they let me threw at 17u30, other people had to walk back down
Iliasse — Google review
The trail is free and very easy. I’d consider it a light nature walk suitable for people between 10 and 50 years old, depending on physical fitness. Some sections are a bit steep, but overall it’s very easy and manageable for most people. I wouldn’t recommend going in flip-flops or shoes that aren’t appropriate for walking.
Pedro C — Google review
Easy to moderate walk, pace yourself, and wear trainers/sneakers. I wouldn't go up if it rained the day before. Nice viewpoint near the top for the cable cart. About 40 mins up and 40 mins back down or take cable cart.
Kirah G — Google review
Great scenic walk along the water and beach. Catch views of the cable cars overhead en route to Pao de açúcar.
Jeremy M — Google review
Excellent free hiking trail- you have the option to just walk along the base of the mountain (flat and very easy) or go up to the first peak which has a good view and although has steep steps in places is not unmanageable by the moderately fit.
G L — Google review
Must see and a hidden gem! This is a gorgeous and easy trail by the coast with beautiful views of the Sugar Loaf mountain. A free and delightful walk with little wooden benches along the way to rest if needed. Strongly recommended.
Dr. W — Google review
Take a hike or walk along this trail and enjoy the unique flora and fauna as you go along. You have a coastline view that weaves under the mountain. Amazing wildlife such as the little monkeys which you can feed but they scatter fairly quickly after being feed. Also birds and other creatures among the trees. Beautiful views can be taken in via many points. The trail has access to other tracks that lead up to Sugarloaf and other worthy landscape scenery. A must see hidden attraction if you are in the area.
Simon B — Google review
Super easy, beautiful hiking trail close to the amazing red beach. I saw monkeys and had a great view of red beach. I took the stair trail up to sugarloaf. It was a 20 minute hike straight up but totally worth it. The view from sugarloaf was magnificent. You can see Copacabana, the marina and Christ the redeemer state and mountain from up there.

Fortaleza de Santa Cruz da Barra is a historic fortress located in Niteroi, Brazil. It boasts stunning architecture and is one of the oldest and most significant historical sites in the country. The fortress offers guided tours and provides visitors with breathtaking views of Guanabara Bay and Sugarloaf Mountain. As a main defensive structure during the colonial and imperial periods, it holds great historical importance. The site attracts tourists and researchers alike, seeking both leisure and insight into Brazil's past.
Beautiful spot to contemplate nature and feel the wind! There is also a military fortress and a coffee shop there. No need to pay the entry unless you are visiting the fortress.

10 reals to enter! It includes a guide. I had a Portuguese guide so I didn't understand much! It felt long! You can take pictures everywhere. You can't touch or stand in certain places which felt annoying at times. Not spectacular but decent! They can improve on lots of things!

Very beautiful views of Rio de Janeiro, the bay and Niteroi. Of course, one can also see the ocean and the beautiful coastline. There is now a guided tour so be prepared to wait half an hour or more before you start. The public bus can drop you off and pick you up there, which is super convenient. Unfortunately the tour is only in Portuguese, but its a very interesting fort and friendly tour guide soldier. The fort is however a little dilapidated.
Emmanuel C — Google review
Beautiful view of Rio and the Guanabara bay, the place has lots of potential which is being wasted by the poor management taking care of the location. Have made two attempts to visit the place and both times end up in frustration as the place was just closed. No website or social media giving accurate and updated information on basic things such as opening hours, the information available online is not trustable as Google and their website do not have updated information. Nobody seems to care about it and as a results it’s facilities such as toilet are all in terrible condition. Both Navy and local governments needs to pay urgent attention to this place as this true waste due to terrible management!

This park, perched at an altitude of 270 meters, is a haven for adventure seekers with its paragliding and hang gliding launch sites. Even on overcast days, visitors can marvel at iconic landmarks such as the Christ the Redeemer statue and Sugarloaf Mountain from its scenic belvedere.

Do you want to experience Rio´s best view? Then Parque da Cidade in Niteroi is the place for you. Fortunately it is not (yet) a very touristic spot, but trust me when I tell you that you won´t regret a visit to this stunning park. The geography (hills, mountains, ocean) is what makes Rio great, and from Parque da Cidade you will see them all, like a perfect postcard!

Steak house
Verdanna is a steakhouse in Niteroi, serving Brazilian and barbecue dishes with sushi on the menu. The restaurant has a full bar and free wifi. The staff are attentive and seem to really enjoy their jobs, especially when it comes to taking care of customers' drinks. There's plenty of seating, although some may find it difficult to get a reservation during busy times. Parking can be accessed for free nearby or payment can be made with validated parking tickets.
The buffet was better than good but less than great. The service however deserves a 10/10. The staff are friendly and they have a few people who can speak English which is good for tourists. I ordered the buffet option and it cost R 70, for this you may eat as meat barbeque as possible as well as a lot of vegetarian and salad options including seafood and sushi.

Great Rodizio .meat all you can eat different types of meat, Sushi and more. Unlike most Rodízios here you don't need to get up and go to the buffet bar to get your salad, vegetables beans cheese etc , you just ask for anything and they will bring it to the table. You loose few options but better service to the table. I Recomended. Price was fair. About 90 RS saturday night per person plus drinks and gratuity.

Casa Omolokum is a multifaceted establishment that offers a unique experience for visitors. It features a restaurant, bar, hair salon, and library, making it a diverse and intriguing destination. Guests have praised the Afro-Brazilian cuisine served at the restaurant and appreciated the opportunity to explore the on-site bookstore. While some found the prices to be on the higher side, many emphasized that the overall experience and mission of Casa Omolokum made it worthwhile.
Super nice place! I loved the combination of Afro-Brazilian food and the bookstore on site. I did the R$ 80 menu, plus drinks. It isn't a cheap place, but the overall experience and the mission of the venue matter. Check working hours, as they aren't typical.

I did not eat here, but I heard the food is amazing. I briefly stopped by Casa Omolokum on a "Rio Little Africa Tour" by Florencios Tour and Travel that I booked on Trip Advisor/Viator. This place has a restaurant, a bar, a hair salon and a library. I had the pleasure of meeting the women who own and run the place and they were very welcoming.

VERY average place...at best. If there are other places on your list of options, you might want to consider them. The owner is very nice... I just don't see this place succeeding as a serious dining option.

Nice restaurant with good intention. However service should be improved. Price is also bit on higher side. I ordered a fish dish and caipirinha. In 30 mins, was not served my drink, though fish dish was quick. Dish was not hot and seems it was cooked a while ago. House decoration is nice and that is the only selling point. With good management, it can be a nice addition to Rió fabela culture. Lady playing the live music and singing was a good addition. Remember this is open only on weekends.

Delicious Brazilian (African) meal! Outstanding service. Warm, inviting people! This was our choice while enjoying a cruise stop in Rio. A must if you want authentic acaraje. Only a 10-15 minute short walk from the pier. They do speak English as well. Can't wait to go back!

The food was phenomenal. The service was even better. We do not speak Portuguese (my wife speaks some Spanish) and they were incredibly welcoming to us. Wonderful experience

What a beautiful experience! Omolokum is a restaurant and a cultural centre at the same time. A place where you can feed your soul learning about brazilian culture and your belly eating delicious homemade food. We didn't have a reservation but Bruno and his wife welcomed us in such a lovely and heartfelt way. They are incredible hosts. We had a delicious fish stew served with farofa and rice. The caipirinha were spot on with a special spicy touch. They shared so much with us and we learnt a great deal about Candomblé. The area is Gamboa and it's far from any subway station so just go by uber (which works really well in Rio by the way).
Chiara B — Google review
Good place to get in touch with African food, music and art. I recommend visiting it along with Instituto Pretos Novos, so you will be able to know a little bit of the essential and the strong influence of African people in Brazil. At Omolokum I had an amazing dish, with a different and a good Caipirinha while watching live Arabic music and dancing.

Middle Eastern restaurant
Amir is a Middle Eastern restaurant located in Copacabana, Rio, known for its regional specialties like falafel, kibbeh, and lamb. The influence of Middle Eastern traders in the city's culinary scene is evident with dishes such as tabouleh and kibe being popular across bars and restaurants. The restaurant offers a variety of options including vegetarian and vegan dishes, gluten-free choices, Lebanese cuisine, and Brazilian fusion.
Fabulous food perfectly prepared & presented. And portions are generous. As an added bonus, go during lunchtime on weekdays and choose from one of their affordably priced executive options. I love their Michui (kebab) de filet mignon with side of tabouleh and side of rice with lentils and crispy onions. See attached picture. This has quickly become one of my favorite eateries in Rio.
James W — Google review
Amir in Copacabana offers a classic Middle Eastern menu with staples like hummus, tabbouleh, kibbeh, falafel, and shawarma. The cold mezze were fresh — the tabbouleh and hummus were especially good. However, the “hot” dishes were more room temp than hot, which took away from the experience a bit. Outdoor seating is a nice touch, but if you don’t eat quickly, the food can get too cold. Not a perfect meal, but still a good spot if you’re craving Arabic flavors in Rio.
Ali E — Google review
AVOID AT ALL COSTS This is the first time I’ve ever given a one-star review, if zero stars were possible, Amir in Rio de Janeiro would deserve it. Our experience tonight was uniquely disappointing, combining failures across every dimension: Terrible value for money: overpriced dishes with nothing to justify the cost. Rude, dismissive staff: customer service was shockingly poor, and the owner was stuck-up and borderline dishonest. False advertising: the restaurant has imagery of Mecca on its walls, suggesting a halal establishment, but they do not serve halal food. Nickel-and-diming: they tried to charge extra just to pack up our leftovers!!!! Atmosphere: the entire vibe was cold and unwelcoming—you leave feeling scammed. Middle Eastern cuisine is known for warmth and hospitality. Amir manages to deliver the exact opposite. Save your money and your night. Go anywhere else.
Omar F — Google review
Great place my wife had falafel salad we were expecting about the size of a squash ball it was more like the size of a slightly squashed base ball, with a beautiful garlic sauce in the middle. I had lamb kebab yum full of flavor was well worth the visit well done guys 10/10
Kevin T — Google review
I don’t even know where to start. I can’t believe this restaurant has such a high rating. This is honestly the worst Arabic food I’ve ever tasted in my life. The hummus had nothing to do with real hummus, the tabbouleh salad wasn’t fresh — it tasted like vegetables from a week ago — and the shawarma… we couldn’t even finish it because it had such an awful aftertaste that made it impossible to eat.
ג ס — Google review
As a vegetarian I was very curious about the fried eggplant sandwich. I really feel like it could have been great, if the oil had not tasted old, and if the eggplant had more spices than just salt. Still pretty tasty. Would recommend the tiny cup of mint tea after lunch. Staff was friendly.
