Fortaleza de Santa Cruz da Barra is a historic fortress located in Niteroi, Brazil. It boasts stunning architecture and is one of the oldest and most significant historical sites in the country. The fortress offers guided tours and provides visitors with breathtaking views of Guanabara Bay and Sugarloaf Mountain. As a main defensive structure during the colonial and imperial periods, it holds great historical importance. The site attracts tourists and researchers alike, seeking both leisure and insight into Brazil's past.
Beautiful spot to contemplate nature and feel the wind! There is also a military fortress and a coffee shop there. No need to pay the entry unless you are visiting the fortress.

10 reals to enter! It includes a guide. I had a Portuguese guide so I didn't understand much! It felt long! You can take pictures everywhere. You can't touch or stand in certain places which felt annoying at times. Not spectacular but decent! They can improve on lots of things!
Antoine A — Google review
Very beautiful views of Rio de Janeiro, the bay and Niteroi. Of course, one can also see the ocean and the beautiful coastline. There is now a guided tour so be prepared to wait half an hour or more before you start. The public bus can drop you off and pick you up there, which is super convenient. Unfortunately the tour is only in Portuguese, but its a very interesting fort and friendly tour guide soldier. The fort is however a little dilapidated.
Emmanuel C — Google review
Beautiful view of Rio and the Guanabara bay, the place has lots of potential which is being wasted by the poor management taking care of the location. Have made two attempts to visit the place and both times end up in frustration as the place was just closed. No website or social media giving accurate and updated information on basic things such as opening hours, the information available online is not trustable as Google and their website do not have updated information. Nobody seems to care about it and as a results it’s facilities such as toilet are all in terrible condition. Both Navy and local governments needs to pay urgent attention to this place as this true waste due to terrible management!

2Itacoatiara Beach

Beach
Itacoatiara Beach, also known as Itacoa by the locals, is a popular destination in Niteroi, Brazil. Accessible by ferry boat from Praca XV or by car via the Rio-Niteroi bridge, this beach offers natural rock pools for swimming and hiking trails on nearby headlands. The area has taken steps to preserve its natural environment by prohibiting beachfront constructions of more than 2 floors. It's a surfer's paradise and a perfect retreat from city life.
Looking for the quintessential Brazilian beach close to Rio? Look no further! This beach has it all: soft sand for lounging, turquoise waters for swimming (or mostly standing in tje waves), a lifeguard tower to keep your reckless "next step" in check, and public services to make sure nature calls don't ruin your vibe. The beach is a living marketplace, with countless salesmen offering everything from sunglasses (you didn’t even know you needed a fifth pair) to grilled queijo coalho. Hungry? Fear not—beachside "quiosks" serve up freshly fried pastéis and ice-cold caipirinhas, all infused with the unmistakable taste of beachy atmosphere. Now, a word of advice: today, January 1st, the beach will test your patience, your personal space, and your ability to walk without accidentally stepping on someone's towel. It's packed tighter than a coxinha. You might find yourself wrestling for a spot in the sand or inadvertently joining someone's family picnic. It’s chaotic, vibrant, and quintessentially Brazilian. Perhaps best enjoyed on a less “national hangover” kind of day. Come here any other day of the year for perfection; today, bring patience, a sense of humor, and maybe a drone to spot free space.

Beautiful beach in Niteroi, 1 hour from Rio, worth the trip. Amazing waves, unbelievable views, with nice trails to hike.
Gustavo S — Google review
Beautiful place, if you like to surf it's a good spot. Super quiet in the wintertime. Loved this place
Alana P — Google review
Lovely beach surrounded by lovely mountains! Waves are medium strong! Mostly for surfers! Safe place but missing washrooms! Nice clean neighborhood!
Antoine A — Google review
Beautiful surfer beach with some stairs leading down to it. On days where the waves are strong you can’t swim much but the views are spectacular! There are kiosks very close behind the beach for food and drinks.
Jacob H — Google review
Very nice beach!!!:) waves amazing, beer too pricy, but it’s alright. Good atmosphere, not dangerous at all:)
Robertas O — Google review
Best one in the area, no beach in Rio comes close to this one, as a bonus you can also climb the "Costão" rock before going to the beach (30 min climb very easy). The only downside is that eventually the waves are very strong and can be kinda dangerous if you're not used to.

Rampa de Voo Parque da Cidade is a popular spot for adventure enthusiasts in Niteroi. This public park, situated 270 meters above sea level, offers breathtaking views of Rio de Janeiro. Visitors can witness paragliding and hang gliding from the two ramps within the park. Additionally, there's a cozy cafe where you can savor breakfast or snacks while taking in the stunning scenery.
Amazing view point in Niteroi. Here you can see the landscape of all Rio-de-Janeiro! Get here is easy by car. I don't know about other ways. Also here you can find a several trails but girl from Information center recommended us visit only one - which is not so long just 500 meters but you can see Eucalyptus forest!! Really spectacular!

(Translated by Google) The access to the park is in good condition, although it is a steep climb. There is free parking, but only senior citizens and disabled people have spaces available. Other visitors park along the road. There is a visitor center with a bathroom. The view is wonderful! Going in the evening to watch the sunset is an incredible experience! (Translated by Google) A place with a beautiful and pleasant view, with benches to rest, a café, good infrastructure, and parking. However, I do not recommend randomly hiring someone to take you on the flight, even if you feel like it at the time. It is clear that there is no form of control/supervision/regulation by the park administration or any association. This fact raises the possibility that some of the instructors offering tours may not be technically qualified to do so (I saw a girl who did not land well, fell into a sewage ditch and injured herself upon landing) or that there may be abusive practices of later charging fees and amounts not initially disclosed, which, to my surprise, I realized is a very common practice in these random approaches, and that the lack of control/supervision makes these small scams practiced by some instructors in the context of exploiting the tourist/visitor experience routine. In any case, if you look for a qualified and honest instructor beforehand, I highly recommend the flight experience, the sensation is wonderful, liberating, unique.

(Translated by Google) The best view of Niterói and Rio! It's so beautiful!!! It's worth having a snack/coffee/popsicle at the Bistrô park, which is right up there. In the visitor area, there's a map and a really cool interactive model. You turn on a switch with the name of a place in the city and, on the model, turn on a light to identify that location. I thought the idea was fantastic. It's worth taking a look inside too. Oh! And there are bathrooms there. A little further down the ramp, close to the visitor area, there's a very well-kept playground. It's kind of hidden if you look from up close to the ramp... (Original) Melhor vista de Niterói e do Rio! Lindo demais!!! Achei a idéia fantástica.

The Municipal Theater of Rio de Janeiro, built in the early 1900s, is a stunning Parisian-style venue known for its ballet and classical music performances. It is considered one of the most beautiful and significant theaters in Brazil. Visitors can explore the city center to discover architectural marvels like this theater and enjoy cultural experiences at places such as Centro Cultural Banco do Brasil.
Beautiful ballet experience. It was my first time and it was really fun and an amazing experience! Would recommend everyone visiting Rio to go to this place, enjoy the beautiful building and also experience the Ballet!

The architectural crown jewel of Rio de Janeiro. Nothing comes close to compare to the opulence and magnificence of the Theatro Municipal! Indubitably one of the most gorgeous opera houses in the world, matched only by places like the Palais Garnier in Paris, or Bayreuth in Germany.
I V — Google review
My recent visit to the Theatro Municipal do Rio de Janeiro to see the opera "Pérola" was a truly enchanting experience. From the moment I stepped into the majestic lobby, I was transported to a bygone era of elegance and grandeur. The architecture of the theater is simply breathtaking, with its intricate details and opulent decor creating a sense of awe and anticipation. The performance of "Pérola" itself was a masterpiece. The orchestra was phenomenal, filling the hall with a rich and powerful sound that resonated with every note. The singers were exceptional, delivering their complex arias with a passion and skill that captivated the entire audience. The staging was beautiful, with stunning costumes and clever use of lighting that enhanced the dramatic storytelling. What I found particularly impressive was the way the entire production came together so seamlessly. The collaboration between the musicians, singers, and technical crew was flawless, resulting in a performance that was both emotionally moving and technically brilliant. The Theatro Municipal do Rio de Janeiro is more than just a venue; it is a cultural landmark that continues to uphold the highest standards of artistic excellence. Attending a performance here is not just an evening out; it's an opportunity to witness world-class artistry in a truly magnificent setting. I highly recommend anyone visiting Rio to check their schedule and experience the magic for themselves. It was a night I will not soon forget.

Sept.25: this was one of the many free places we visited in the Lapa area. Great historic building in middle of the Lapa area, unfortunately only seen from the outside. It has two big beautiful domes on top, which made it very photogenic. There are many bars, restaurants & great impressive other buildings nearby.

This is a beautiful theatre and well worth seeing when in Rio. I bought tickets to the ballet La fille mal gardée the day of the show at the physical box office. The staff was so nice and helpful, and I really enjoyed the show.

Truly spectacular historical theater in rio de janeiro that is still preserved and has events. If you have time to visit here and see a concert, definitely consider it. The surrounding area is quite abandoned but that's very much the city of rio. 10/10 5/5

Art museum
Museums
The Museu de Arte Contemporânea de Niterói is a must-visit for art and architecture enthusiasts. Designed by the renowned architect Oscar Niemeyer, this iconic modernist building offers panoramic views and an impressive collection of contemporary art.
To be honest, we didn’t come for the art - we came for the architecture. As one of Oscar Niemeyer’s most iconic and celebrated creations, this building doesn’t just house the art; it is THE art. In fact, its sweeping curves and bold presence utterly eclipse whatever hangs on the walls inside. Standing before it, in this breathtaking setting, is a five-star experience - no, beyond five stars. The exhibition within? A mere whisper compared to the thunderous poetry of the structure itself. While the price of admission is more than reasonable, the absence of a functioning e-payment system made for a rather unconventional and even bizarre solution. To get the cash to purchase the tickets, I was advised to buy from the coconut vendor on the street, then ask him to charge “extra” on my credit card in return for cash reals. It was such a first world meets third world situation! Every aspect of the MAC is photogenic. The blazing Rio sun and clear skies helped. We lingered for two hours both on the inside and out. And after that we lingered even further with a meal at the delicious Bistrô MAC with its panoramic view of Guanabara Bay. It was an amazing way to spend a Sunday afternoon!
Eddie C — Google review
You have to visit MAC of you’re in Niterói/Icarai. What a cool building! And the fact that something as cool as this is from the 90s? Wow… Worth the visit. Free entry on Wednesdays. They have one artist exposition at a time.
Jeremy M — Google review
Beautiful museum, the building per se is an art piece!!! The views are amazing. The exhibitions were nice, I expected more from this museum to be honest. Permanent collection was nice but quite small. The temporary exhibition regarding costumes from the Carnival, really beautiful. Also, I would love to have a proper exhibition regarding the building per se, the process, construction, and so on, currently there are only a few pictures of the construction that’s it.
Ulises B — Google review
It’s an interesting building with great views, but to call this an “art museum” would be a complete joke. The inside of the building is completely empty and the little art that it does have feels dull, boring, and lacks any creativity. The top floor was also under renovation and restricted access. The staff are also quite rude and they require visitors to store all bags, no matter how small in size, in several lockers they say you’re “obligated” to use. To contrast, the outside of the building is free to walk up to and way more interesting than the museum itself. Calling this an observation deck would be a more appropriate title.
Manatee S — Google review
One of the best locations ever for a modern art museum. The sensuous, modernist, iconic masterpiece by the unparalleled Niemeyer takes full advantage of the wonderful vista of the picture-perfect Rio de Janeiro’s bay in a rare symbiosis of Architecture and Nature. The interior is equally rewarding; the circular - rotunda style echoing Lloyd Wright’s New York’s Guggenheim. You won’t forget the experience.
Carlos O — Google review
Amazing architecture. The art exhibition was beautiful. I loved the proposed walking circuit by the architect. Ticket prices are fair $16 reales per person, you CANT PAY WITH CARD, it’s either purchasing tickets at the reception with cash or online.

The Oscar Niemeyer building and location are very special. We also enjoyed a delicious light lunch at the restaurant there. We then spent 3 hours on the Praia Boa Viagem with the locals. Thoroughly enjoyed this day. We also caught the ferry back to Rio.

Nestled in the vibrant neighborhood of Santa Teresa, Parque das Ruínas is a captivating public park that beautifully combines history and art. This enchanting destination features an art gallery built around the remnants of a grand mansion, offering visitors a glimpse into the past while enjoying contemporary artistic expressions. Families can embark on an exciting cable car ride to reach this elevated oasis, making it an adventure for all ages.
Such a beautiful place and an awesome weather as well! We’re lucky because a pottery event was happening on saturday. Also the place counts with a theatre. The view from Rio is incredible!

This is a wonderful park dedicated to iconic Brazilian journalist Gloria Maria. The actual building within the park accentuates celebrated Brazilian art and the park and building ruins offer magnificent vistas of Rio. Within the park is a charming outdoor cafe and the washrooms within the grounds are well maintained. This attraction is well worth a visit when in the Santa Teresa district of Rio particularly on a sunny day.
Peter K — Google review
I visited on a weekend, which meant there were a few small stalls set up (I'm not sure if these are present during the week). The park is lovely for taking in the view. I really appreciate how they've converted an old building into a watch tower with a gallery inside. There are a few other shops on-site as well. The overall vibe is great, and the weather this time of year is excellent. I'm happy I came!
Temsiri T — Google review
Parque das Ruínas is one of my favorite spots in Santa Teresa, the artsy, bohemian heart of Rio. The mix of modern structures built into the old, crumbling mansion walls gives the place so much character. Climbing to the top is a must—the panoramic view over Rio is incredible, with clear sights of Pão de Açúcar and Cristo Redentor standing out beautifully. I also loved the art exhibition in the basement, which added an unexpected cultural touch. And, if you need a break, there’s a cozy outdoor café perfect for a coffee. It’s a place that feels special and is definitely worth a visit!

A hidden gem with stunning view of sugar loaf. Unfortunately it was being refurbished when we visited so most areas were closed to the public, but I've been before and recommend walking around the ruin and going all the way to the top for an amazing 360 panoramic view. There are also various musical events on regularly in the cultural centre (within the ruins), check schedule to time your visit and get something extra.

Ponte Pres. Costa e Silva, also known as the Rio-Niterói Bridge, is an impressive 8.26-mile concrete bridge connecting Rio de Janeiro and Niterói. The bridge offers stunning views of Guanabara Bay and its surroundings, including the iconic Christ the Redeemer statue, Corcovado Mountain, and Maracana Stadium.
I saw this from a boat at night and went under it. It is amazing. Really can recommend this.
J. J — Google review
Most of the time the bridge is overwhelmed with traffic, especially because of the tool. I've never took the ferry but looks like a good option.
Erik S — Google review
Blow the bridge up now it's completely pointless (unless you like 90 minutes of traffic). The toll booth builds up that much traffic it makes it renders the bridge completely pointless. Get the boat, quicker and less stressful

Hello travellers.I crossed this bridge since young. We have a beach house in Região dos Lagos for more than fourty years now.I remember very cool and small roads back then.I kept crossing all my life,it got busy.In 2005 I had a job in Maricá-rj,I had to pass here about four times a week.It became from a trip and vacations to a necessary road and route to my job.I crossed by bus, either 996 charitas, always catched right by my house in Humaitá,rj,zona sul, lagoa and crossing the bridge and arriving in Niterói where I catched another bus to my town,.Maricá.Mostly I catched Nossa sra. Amparo by novo rio terminal and made the straight trip to Maricá,passing through this bridge. The bridge is cool, the bus afraid us,runs a lot,is tall and run by the limits and fences, very short, appearing can fall fifty meters all the time.Bit if you go by car,it´s cool, you choose your lane, your speed and pay the obeyed fare right before arriving in Niterói. There is the mount, the hill ,where the boats passes, the huge freight and oil parked inside our bay, made built a huge hill with rj-sp airplanes curving right close to the top. The traffic is huge, looks like a hell or crowd, maybe a good solution is build the subway between the cities. Good trip.

It also features churches like Igreja Nossa Senhora da Penha and Igreja Nossa Senhora de Bonsucesso, both holding rich historical and architectural value.
There is not much to visit inside, only three rooms. You cannot go up to the upper floors. What is worth it is the entire exterior and the panorama it offers. A wonderful view.

First was call rats island then cobras island then finally called fiscal island. Amazingly the night that the republic was voted and proclaimed, it was during an inaugural enormous party thrown by the then royal of Brazil, and it was its last night as a ruler

Highly recommend visiting Ilha Fiscal. It’s a palace where was organized the last party of the Imperium in November 1889. Architecture is beautiful, and the explanations of the tour guide are interesting. When I went they did it only in Portuguese though. The trip takes less than 2 hours including the boat trip to the island.
Jonna M — Google review
There is no boat trip available now, they board you on three buses and give a ride there. You can only visit three small rooms downstairs the castle. Disappointing.
David C — Google review
The organisation is terrible. Tried three times to visit the ilha fiscal. Either the island is closed or the boat is not functioning or something... And it's never on the website, impossible to use the website. Good grief. Can't book tickets on the website, no English support, times are all over the place...it's poor. The staff are very welcoming and accommodating but the organisation is poor.

Pão de Açúcar is a supermarket located in the Urca neighborhood, near Praia Vermelha. It's known for its fresh fruits and vegetables, pharmacy, and reasonably priced restaurant. The bakery next to the restaurant offers delicious options like Ciabatta with buffalo mozzarella. While it has great opening hours and a wide variety of products, shopping late at night may result in long queues. Despite being considered expensive by some, it offers unique products that are hard to find elsewhere.
This is one of the best supermarkets I've ever been to. They have fresh fruits and vegetables, a pharmacy and a restaurant as well. The food at the restaurant is reasonably priced and if you don't feel like eating at it, there's a bakery right next to it. My favourite choice at the bakery is the Ciabatta with buffalo mozzarella! Most supermarkets could learn from this one.

Costão de Itacoatiara is a popular trail that offers a daily cardio workout. It's relatively short, taking about an hour to complete the round trip. The route starts with a forest staircase and then leads to a steep cliff, where hikers can use steel cables for assistance. While some find it intense, others consider it to be a light trail, making it suitable for both beginners and experienced hikers alike.

Sugarloaf Mountain, a 396m-tall peak on a peninsula with sweeping views and accessible by cableway, is one of the most iconic rocks in the world. It offers breathtaking views of Rio de Janeiro from its peak and is accessible by a thrilling glass-walled cable car journey. Additionally, visitors can enjoy an Instagram-worthy breakfast at Parque Gloria Maria with views of Guanabara Bay and Sugarloaf Mountain.
One of the places you must visit as a tourist in Rio. The journey to the peak is in two stages, both via cable cars. The queues move quickly and the journeys are smooth. Preferential access is available for wheelchair users. The primary reason for visiting is the views, although my visit was on a very misty day and opportunities were limited. There are plenty of toilets and places for refreshments. Also upmarket souvenir stalls. Still worth visiting on a misty day!
David S — Google review
Very good attraction. It gets really busy so be prepared to be pushing and shoving. Everybody is trying to get the best spot to record the videos. They do have nice foods and souvenir shop on top of the mountain. There is always entertainment going on like live music.

Sugarloaf in Rio offers breathtaking panoramic views of the city, beaches, and mountains, absolutely worth the visit. The cable car ride is smooth and scenic. It can get very crowded, especially during peak hours, so try to go early or on a weekday. There are a few shops and places to grab a snack at the top, but prices are a bit high. Still, the overall experience is unforgettable and a must-do while in Rio!
Russo G — Google review
We came here early to avoid the long line. A glass cable car carried us to the top of iconic Sugar Loaf Mountain, actually expect to ride second cable car to real mountain top, which is a symbol of the city, in ideal conditions, I supposed to see the stunning panorama of the beaches, Corcovado Mountain, downtown Rio, and Guanabara Bay, etc. actually what you can see is by chance, the mist of cloud always come across to make you wonder, and it's hard to take a good picture of the stunning panoramic view of bay. There are squirrel-like primates called marmosets which can be spotted near the cable car stations and trails on the mountain , a species native to eastern Brazil. The tourists are discouraged to feed them.
Zemin H — Google review
A world class experience. Preferable to book the cable car tickets in advance to avoid disappointment. There are queues to board and alight from the cable cars. The 2 levels of the cable car stations provide varied views of the city of Rio from the top. The vistas are breathtaking. It can get a little cold at the top, so dress accordingly. The Christ Redeemer statue can be seen from the top. There a few expensive stores and good cafés at the top. Toilet and drinking water facilities are good. Best time to visit is around the sunset time to get the night views of the city.

Copacabana Beach is an iconic 2.2-mile stretch of sandy coastline with a bustling promenade, food kiosks, and hotels. The beach extends for about 4km and offers a lively atmosphere with soccer players, locals, and tourists enjoying caipirinhas at the kiosks. Visitors can also witness kids showcasing their soccer skills and beach vendors selling various items. It's recommended to check the water quality before swimming due to occasional contamination after heavy rainfall.
By far the best beach in the refion. It's lively both at day and night. Free showers are also up for grabs and there are several spots where you can rent an umbrella and/or chairs for a fair price.
Filip M — Google review
The beach is beautiful. It was a bit wavy given I visited in the end of September and the water was a bit cold but it was really enjoyable and refreshing on hot days. There are many retailers that occasionally can try hard to sell whatever they have. It should also be known that this is not the safest place to be. One has to be very careful with his belongings and where to sit to avoid

Copacabana Beach in Rio de Janeiro is everything you imagine it to be — and more! The moment you step onto the soft golden sand, you can feel the vibrant energy that makes this beach world-famous. The stunning curve of the coastline, framed by lush green hills and the rhythmic sound of the Atlantic waves, creates a picture-perfect scene that feels straight out of a postcard. What makes Copacabana so special is the unique blend of relaxation and excitement. In the mornings, it’s peaceful and ideal for a refreshing swim or a quiet walk along the promenade. As the day goes on, the beach comes alive with locals playing volleyball and football, vendors selling refreshing coconut water, and musicians adding a joyful samba rhythm to the air. The iconic black-and-white wave-patterned boardwalk is another highlight — perfect for strolling, cycling, or simply soaking in the view of the sea and city skyline. There are plenty of beachfront cafés and kiosks where you can enjoy delicious Brazilian snacks and fresh juices while watching the sunset paint the sky in shades of orange and pink. Copacabana Beach isn’t just a place — it’s an experience of Rio’s soul: warm, lively, and unforgettable. Whether you go to relax, meet people, or simply admire the breathtaking scenery, it’s a destination that leaves a lasting impression. Highly recommended for anyone visiting Rio — Copacabana is pure magic. 🇧🇷✨

Sept.25: We went to the famous Copacabana Beach. We taught it would be crowded as it was weekend, however this wasn't the case. There were a lot of local vendors selling all kinds of stuff & many different food, icecreams & drinks. Some brought a complete umbrella with bikinis & thongs as well as really nice looking grilled big scampis (we didn't try as we didn't know how long they were exposed to sun, etc.) & many more. As we need to get the Copacabana beach vipe, we bought a 700ML freshly pressed lime caipirinha. Delicious, but with the sun & almost on an empty stomach; I got hit very fast. In the far we saw Christ the Redeemer (big, famous Jezus statue of 30 m height on a hill), we hope to visit one of these days.

Here's a good review of Copacabana beach: Copacabana is more than just a beach; it's the vibrant, beating heart of Rio de Janeiro. The moment you step onto its famous wave-patterned promenade, you feel an electric energy. The 4km stretch of sand is a democratic playground for everyone—you'll see intense games of footvolley, locals sunbathing, and tourists sipping água de coco from the countless kiosks. The view is spectacular, with the curving bay framed by Sugarloaf Mountain on one end. It’s a must-see for its sheer iconic status and incredible people-watching, capturing the city's lively spirit perfectly.

One of the famous beaches in the world was worth visiting. A fairly clean that has many things to offer - from food stalls to watching people play volleyball, soccer and other games, enjoying a nice drink, snacks and food. A good place to get your morning or afternoon walk/run as well. A safe place compared to some parts of Rio. From good to excellent hotels across the beach.

Escadaria Selarón, also known as the Selaron Steps, is a famous public stairway in the city adorned with colorful and hand-painted tiles. This iconic landmark consists of 215 vibrant steps leading up from Rua Joaquim Silva. The Chilean-born artist Jorge Selarón dedicated decades to covering the steps with over 2,000 tiles collected from more than 60 countries around the world.
I took an Uber to this place and it was very easy to find. It's literally a staircase filled up with lots of different tiles from all over the world and colors. It's beautiful and very colorful. Attention to the hundreds of people trying to take pictures because on Fridays and weekends it's kinda crowded. The best time to visit it is in the afternoon during week days. It'll make a lot easier to take a nice picture. Wearing comfortable shoes is a good idea. If you go up till the top, you can even take the street over the hill and reach the ruins park.
Caio M — Google review
It could really be pack after 10am. So, if you’d like a nice photo, do go early! We had to go back a 2nd time to get nice photo taken without people everywhere!
Est R — Google review
The stairs themselves are stunning but the sheer number of people trying to pose on them makes it overwhelming and takes away from the art. Go early or in the rain for the best chance at a decent view. The street leading up to the steps is full of souvenir stalls that are actually pretty well priced compared to the same stuff at Christ the Redeemer or Ipanema.
Maris C — Google review
I came here twice, solely because it was so ridiculously busy the first time I thought it deserved a second go. The first was on a Saturday around 12. It was so insanely busy you could barely move let alone get any sort of pictures or enjoyment. The second was on a Monday around 10:30 it was still very busy but far less people. You could walk without getting in the way of to many people's photos and find a spot to take your own. Well the stairs are very beautiful, and it is completely free. I wouldn't say it is an absolute must see. If it's a stop on your tour, or nearby where you're staying I think go for it. But I wouldn't go out of my way to see it.
Izzy E — Google review
Such an amazing vibe with beautiful artwork on the steps. It can be a bit crowded, but it is so worth the trip. Grab a caprihana and stroll on up the steps. Great little shops at the bottom to check out too.

Easy to miss if you're going from up top. The stair view can be enjoyed from tje bottom only. They're located on a 5-10 minute walk from the cathedral and are definitely worth a visit.
Filip M — Google review
Sept.25: would have gotten 5 stars if it wasn't so overcrowded. We unfortunately visited on Sunday afternoon, lots of tourists which all took their time to get pictures... It was even hard only to enter the stairs just to go up.
Petra ( — Google review
This place is an iconic one. I went there late in the afternoon and was packed! Still, flocks of people would come and go leaving good time to take pictures. However, the best moment to be there is very very early in the morning like 6.30am, sun rises around 6-6.18am so it'll be well lit and everything, and most importantly, empty! You don't need to buy a ticket to enter this place since it's open for everyone. Just be careful of your belongings as always, pay attention to your surroundings and you'd be just fine! If you have enough time it's really amazing to really pay attention to the different ceramic tiles, also, be careful on where you step, after all it's ceramic so it can be slippery or tricky at times.

One part is pet friendly, with a dog gate, a part with animals, 🪿 🦆🦢 Lots of fishes in the ponds. one part that has big kid ground, and it's a good layout with many entrances to the park Weekend, there is always something going on, and there is always a market on Sundays.

Take a relaxing walk through the green park with a pond. Have a picnic. Play chess at a table. Sit at a bench and watch the birds. Check out the small “petting farm” of ducks and geese. Take your kids to the huge park. Grab some food at one of the kiosks. There are plenty of things to do here to enjoy your day.

It's a cozy area with beautiful trees, some animals, a pleasant lake and an area with some rides and a playground for the kids. In the weekends there is a fair from the morning up to be beginning of the afternoon. Sometimes there are events in the park like a food truck festival.

Lovely park for the kids to spend some time in. It is a relaxing area inside the city and the children love to run around and be free. The water fountain is impressive and is well worth a visit. The kids play area is lively and clean. There are a lot of kiosks to buy some snacks and drinks from. The park is free to enter and there are discrete security personnel around

Sossego Beach, or Praia do Sossego, is a hidden gem that embodies tranquility and natural beauty. This small beach has earned an international Blue Flag sustainability certificate, highlighting its commitment to environmental preservation. Tucked away past Camboinhas, it remains relatively undiscovered by tourists, allowing for a serene atmosphere where visitors can truly unwind.
Nice quiet beach. Not easy to get there but the place is nice.

Beautiful secluded beach but very full of people on hot summer days. Absolutely gorgeous sunsets over Rio. There are some little barzinhos you can get caipirinhas at and you can rent chairs and umbrella if you want also. There were huge waves the day we went which was fun but you couldn’t relax in the water and had to be very careful of people on boogie boards and surf boards all fighting to be in the same small area of water. I would definitely go back, but if you’re looking for a peaceful quiet day this might not be the beach for you on a hot summer day. Update: I went back on a calm day and it was absolutely amazing and perfect. Love it and have now gone back many more times.

Caminho Niemeyer is an 11-kilometer long cultural center located along the Niteroi coast, featuring a collection of imaginative and organic buildings designed by the renowned Brazilian architect Oscar Niemeyer. The area serves as a showcase of his work, including the modernist concrete curves of the Teatro Popular and other structures. It was created to revitalize the region and has become a prominent venue for art, history, and culture.
Fascinating cluster of buildings designed by the legendary Oscar Niemeyer - the largest group outside Brasilia. Wonderful free tours available from the visitor center take you inside the buildings.

A must for any architecture lover. Niteroi has the biggest collection of Niemeyer works in Brazil after Brasilia. Students there offer free guided tour in English and they're amazing Very attentive and knowledgeable. Our guide was Fransceils. She shared so much of the Brazilian culture with us too!

This is one of the best architecture collections you can visit for free in the world. CAMINHO NIEMEYER is a must, if you're visiting Rio. To get here, i strongly suggest crossing the bay with Barcas (the ferry), walk 5 minutes and enjoy. After, you should go to MAC Niterói, and then to Parque da Cidade, which is the best option for the sunset time.

Do you want to experience Rio´s best view? Then Parque da Cidade in Niteroi is the place for you. Fortunately it is not (yet) a very touristic spot, but trust me when I tell you that you won´t regret a visit to this stunning park. Praça Arariboia, inaugurated in 1973 to commemorate the city's 400th anniversary, replaced a bronze bust honoring a local chief. Formerly known as Largo Martim Afonso or Largo do Mercado, it once hosted a public market until its dismantling in 1889. The square now features a modern waterway station and offers pleasant ferry trips, despite some disagreement about the fare.
It’s an enjoyable ride, recommended

This wasn’t on our list of places to visit but we walked up to it since Igreja de Nossa Senhora da Candelaria was already closed when we got here. Surprisingly beautiful inside and a chic place to eat, drink and spend time or meet someone. Incredible building, great use of space. Pro: - free tickets - easy 3 hour spent - diverse expo (temp and permanent) - antique fixtures and elevator - good A/C Con: - hard to get tickets (you need tickets for each expo and it isn't user friendly) use the real person booth if you are a foreigner (you need a cpf to use the self service machines) - path isn't self explanatory (sometimes hard to figure out where to go next) Overall it was a great museum,

Almost missed this excellent site in Rio. Impressive building and central hall but the very best bit is the Museum to Money on the 4th floor. Surprisingly, so interesting and absorbing! The only downside is the annotations for the Money Museum are only in Portuguese so you will have to use a translation app if you do not speak the language. Lifts to get there are vintage and operated by Centro employees. Highly recommended. Also a branch of Colombo for a well earned coffee or snack afterwards.

Mosteiro de São Bento, a 17th-century church adorned with intricate gilded carvings, is a significant site in Rio de Janeiro. Situated on a hill overlooking the Bay of Guanabara, it offers protection and pleasant weather. The monastery holds the remains of Brazilian military figures and has historical ties to Italy. Visitors can explore nearby attractions like the National Library and take a walking tour that includes iconic landmarks such as Praca XV de Novembro and the Municipal Theatre.
The Abbey of Our Lady of Montserrat, more commonly known as the Mosteiro de São Bento, is a Benedictine abbey located on the Morro de São Bento in downtown Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The Mannerist style church is a primary example of Portuguese colonial architecture in Rio and the country. Founded in 1590 by monks coming from the state of Bahia, the Benedictine monastery of Rio de  Janeiro was built on the request of the citizens of the recently founded city of São Sebastião themselves. On the very center of the great metropolis, it is held as the place of silence and prayer. The visit is restrict the church of Nossa Senhora de Montserrat, annexed to the Monastery. Details like the art noveau iron gate and the rosewood altars covered in gold are impressive. From Monday to Friday, at 5:15pm, there services with gregorian chants, which also happened on Saturdays, 8am, and on Sundays, at 10am.

Nestled in the heart of Rio de Janeiro, the Museu Nacional de Belas Artes is a treasure trove for art enthusiasts. This fine arts museum showcases an impressive collection of both national and international masterpieces, with a particular focus on Brazilian artists from the 19th and 20th centuries. The museum's architecture draws inspiration from Paris's Louvre, creating an eclectic atmosphere that enhances your visit.
Sunning museum filled with world renowned pieces of fine arts from around the world but with a focus towards highlighting local Brazilian artists who have gained prominence in the recent years. An absolutely extensive collection with art from many different eras and time periods, from 3d sculptures, to modern art selections, to traditional oil paintings. The facilities are relatively modest and only some exhibits have air conditioning which is a great relief if you need a break from the hot Brazilian summers. Restrooms are not clearly marked or easy to navigate but are adequate. Admission price is unbeatable at a price of absolutely free although you do have to store any bags at the coat check. Some special exhibits also require lines and long waits. Waited almost 45 minutes for a special exhibit only to not be very impressed at the small gallery inside.

Sadly, this museum remains barely open, after sustaining some major water damage some years back, though locals report the work to repair it is still ongoing. There's only one main exhibit of classical style sculpture, but nothing else for public viewing yet. Check locally for any updates before making a special trip, or you can check in if you are visiting the Municipal Theatre right across the street
Alan K — Google review
Interesting collection of imperial and contemporary art. Cost R8 to get in. Well worth it. Contains the largest painting ever commissioned in Brazil. Make sure you ask for a headset guide. It wasn’t offered to me, so I didn’t even know it was an option until too late.
R F — Google review
Seemingly perennially under maintenance, the museum suggests it is "open". However there is only one room of exhibits available with only some second-rate casts of greek and Roman sculpture. So many employees on site, yet only one room available. Not really worth showing up for it. Sadly, there is evidence of water ingress and poor maintenance throughout the public areas. Has much promisem hopefully it will meet its potential in future.

Amazing fine arts' museum. Many galleries showcasing national and international paintings. There is a sculpture gallery and temporary exhibitions as well. Located in Flamengo Park, central Rio de Janeiro, the Museu de Arte Moderna do Rio de Janeiro is a contemporary art museum housed in a remarkable 1954 Alfonso Eduardo Reidy building. It holds an impressive collection of 20th-century works, including pieces by renowned artists such as Jackson Pollock, Di Vacalcanti, Maria Martins, Henry Moore, and others.
Impressive venue, brutalist building with unique design. We could not visit it on the inside since it was closed for refurbishment. We could only visit a branch of the building with a temporary exhibition, not impressed by those paintings. It's a must see for architecture and brutalism lovers.

While wandering through the city, we stumbled upon the Museum of Modern Art (MAM) in Rio de Janeiro. This striking building immediately caught our attention with its unique architectural style. Designed by renowned Brazilian architect Affonso Eduardo Reidy in the 1950s, the museum is a masterpiece of modernist architecture, featuring open spaces and large glass panels that blend the structure with its surroundings. The entrance was free, and inside we found rotating exhibitions of contemporary art. Although I was expecting a permanent collection of modern masterpieces, the temporary exhibits were still an interesting and thought-provoking experience. Overall, MAM Rio is a great stop for art lovers and those curious about Brazil’s modernist architectural heritage. Even if you're not an art enthusiast, the building itself and its location in Flamengo Park make it worth a visit.

The exhibition is limited but fascinating. It’s architecture is beautiful. It seems that its gardens are unique. Though, since they were preparing a COP30 event, they didn’t give access to the garden. Isn’t this contradictory? Where is the respect to the citizens that had a public space restricted?

Beautiful building. No collection but there was a very interesting exhibition about the great garden designer and landscape architect Burle Marx. The setting is beautiful in the Flamengo Park. Green surroundings. Tram stop nearby (Antonio Carlos) and not far from Lapa on foot.

Very unpleasant experience. From the moment we entered the 2nd floor, we were closely followed by a museum guard, which made us feel uncomfortable. One guard in particular—a young woman with long curly hair—was especially aggressive in both her expression and behavior toward us and our child. They followed us so closely that it felt intimidating. When we stepped onto a standard balcony area overlooking the 1st floor, the same guard approached us and abruptly told us we were not allowed there, speaking in a very rude manner. At that point, we decided to leave immediately. There were no English skills among the staff, and when we couldn’t speak Portuguese, the guard rolled her eyes at us as if insulted. As we left, there was no polite goodbye or thank you for our visit—only another guard following us. The whole atmosphere felt tense and uncomfortable. We had really been looking forward to this visit, but sadly we left upset and disappointed.
Svend G — Google review
I thought it was quite a cool bit of architecture but my partner said it looked like the 'back of a stadium'. Maybe he is right :) Worth taking a look. Free to see the outside. The gardens must have been lovely once, but now they are poorly maintained, with plastic floating in the ponds, broken pavements and groups of people loitering in a vaguely worrying way. I wouldn't want to come here at night.

Sugar Loaf Mountain, named for its resemblance to a pile of brown sugar, is an iconic landmark in Rio de Janeiro. The mountain features a cable car that takes visitors to its summit, offering breathtaking panoramic views of the city and the sea. This engineering marvel was launched in 1912 and has since been enjoyed by millions of tourists, including celebrities. The cable car ride includes three stations: Praia Vermelha, Morro da Urca, and Pao de Acucar.
The waiting line here is very very long. The best option is to take the express fast track ticket which will dig a hole in ur pocket but is better then standing for an hour or more. Ones on the car u will be up in 1.5 mins in first and similar time in 2nd car. The view is very nice to see from up, specially for plane lovers to see the airport n flight take off n landing. It is very spacious up and so one can enjoy and have a great time up, either by just eating or walking or sitting or just enjoying the 360 degree view. There r toilets up the and ample amount of food options along with shopping options are available. One can take a helicopter ride too from there. Only negative are the lines. Going n coming time takes alot due to the long lines. Visitors r adviced to keep a day to visit here. It was safe too.

Another must see attraction in Rio besides the Christ the Redeemer. Very professionally managed and the cable car ride was safe and comes with breathtaking views ( if it's not cloudy or rainy) although the ride is pretty short compared to what I thought. Views from the mountain are spectacular to say the least. There are cafes, ships and restaurants to enhance your visit. Seeing one of the marmoset monkeys was a huge plus.

Sept.25: a must see when visiting Rio de Janeiro. Arrival @Bondinho ticket booth, we bought tickets on the spot with discounts! We were lucky, Lisa got discount as a student (she had her student card with her as proof) & both my partner & I got seniority discount (without proof; we aren't even 60 years!). Instead of BRL197 × 3, we now got in for total BRL291 = €46.60 which saved us almost €50. The ticket combined two cable car rides, one to Morro da Urca (height @220 m) & the other to Pão da Açúcar (height @396 m) as well as visit Project Maravilha of Carlos Vergara. @1st stop we had lovely views of the different surrounding bays & beaches, as well as Christ the Redeemer in the far. There were cuddly little monkey's hanging around & also the oldest cable car vehicle (in yellow). There was a lot of military activity @this platform. Last stop was @Pão da Açúcar (Sugarloaf Mountain). There are benches in the shade underneath the trees. Afterwards we went to the project Maravilha which was in a shady bush with lush vegetation & blooming trees & flowers. Along there were several benches as well as tables with stools. So we played some card games & enjoyed the panoramic views!

During our six-hour layover in Rio de Janeiro, we decided to make the most of our time by visiting Sugarloaf Mountain. The taxi ride from the airport took about 45 minutes, with some heavy traffic along the way, but it was absolutely worth it. We had purchased advance fast-pass tickets, which turned out to be a great decision — they allowed us to skip the long entrance line and save valuable time. The city itself felt vibrant and beautiful, and Sugarloaf rises majestically near Copacabana Beach, an iconic sight even from afar. The cable car ride was a highlight in itself — knowing it’s one of the first cable cars in the world made the experience even more special. The first stop takes you to a lower hill, surrounded by lush greenery and curious little monkeys that were delightful to watch. The facilities there were spotless and well maintained. We then boarded the second cable car up to Sugarloaf’s summit. The rides are frequent — about every five minutes — so there’s very little waiting. On the way up, we even spotted rock climbers scaling the face of the mountain, taking short breaks along the way. The views from the top were stunning — sweeping vistas of Rio, the beaches, and the ocean. It was a short visit, but truly memorable. I highly recommend this experience to anyone passing through Rio, even if you only have a few hours to spare.
Alper Y — Google review
Pre-purchased tickets recommended but they also can be changed if the weather is not favorable. This car takes you on top of the Sugar loaf mountains from where you have a spectacular view over Rio de Janeiro. On a good day you can see the Christ the Redeemer statue majestically standing towards the Sugar loaf mountains. On the first hill after the first leg you have a platform where they have set a "night" club with electronic music. Also some shops and restaurants available. On the second platform after the second leg you also have some shops, restaurants and of course viewing pltforms.
Juho Ä — Google review
Sugar Loaf is a natural marvel, the view is the best! There is 2 rocks, Urca y Sugar Loaf. First floor is elegant and cafes and shops (not very crowded but chic). Upstairs is obviously peak of interest. The jewelry stolls have cute stuff, just quiet expensive, same stuff in the market in Copacabana is lot cheaper. In front of the square there is Red Beach. The trees in the square are beautiful..
Ekinista T — Google review
This was a nice ride up to two hills overlooking Rio; Morro da Urca is the first stop, the Sugarloaf. The ride seems too short because of the views being so good along the way. Lots of good vantage points at each stop to take photos of Christ the Redeemer, the beach, the city and the surrounding areas.

Incredible scenery. The cars felt safe and steady despite strong winds. Must do: Get the Fast Track. We bypassed a massive 1-hour queue for the descent and went straight through.

Gardens
Nestled in the Jadrim Botanico district of Rio's Zona Sul, the Botanical Garden of Rio de Janeiro is a historic park that boasts a rich variety of flora and fauna. Established in 1808 and opened to the public in 1822, this sprawling garden spans 54 cultivated hectares and is home to an impressive collection of 6,500 different plants.
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ I absolutely loved this place! It is truly awesome and incredibly beautiful — a spot where you could easily spend hours just walking around and enjoying the scenery. The garden is full of different paths where you can explore for a long time without ever getting bored. Along the way, you can spot exotic animals, discover unique plants, and admire countless flowers in a variety of shapes and colors. It feels like a true oasis in the middle of the city. There is also a lovely café in the middle of the garden, perfect if you need a break or just want to sit down and enjoy the view. The whole area is very clean, spacious, and well-maintained, which makes the visit even more enjoyable. A wonderful experience overall, and definitely a place worth visiting!
Nataliia T — Google review
Had an amazing afternoon wandering these beautiful gardens. They have lots of buildings scattered around holding different plants species/types. The signage around the garden was helpful and clear and the pamphlet they give at the beginning is extremely helpful. I also had a wonderful meal at the cafe/restaurant in the garden. Keep in mind that this garden is mainly trees not flowers if that is of importance to you. I spent about 4 hours here but you could easily do it in 2 or extend it much much longer.

We road our bikes here from the Sheraton. You do not need to buy tickets in advance on a weekday. Gorgeous views, nice place to drink a coffee or have lunch. I also love monkeys, so seeing one was fun.

The park is amazing! The best place to spend a few hours in while it’s hot outside. I saw incredible monkeys and birds, also cute lizards. The flora and fauna there is really worth seeing. I am really glad I got to visit the park. The only issue is the process of buying a ticket. Foreign tourists can do it only offline and with cash… so strange and really inconvenient
Darina L — Google review
Arguably the most underrated place to visit in Rio. We paid BRL80 per person to enter and spent 3 hours. You can fins cute monkeys running about and the scenery is absolutely gorgeous.

First place that I find the employees that are like Americans where they seem to hate their job and just sap your energy by being close to them. But that was just a few of them. Other than that, it was a very wonderful experience. It’s beautifully manicured and laid out expansive and beautiful monkeys and butterflies, Bromeliads and all sorts of cool stuff. Very definitely worth the experience and the fee. With the fee it keeps all of the small annoyances at bay. Thanks for this experience

Surfing beach with natural rock pools for swimming & hiking trails on nearby headlands.

Best one in the area, no beach in Rio comes close to this one, as a bonus you can also climb the "Costão" rock before going to the beach (30 min climb very easy). The only downside is that eventually the waves are very strong and can be kinda dangerous if you're not used to.

Interesting place, a hidden gem. Bit shabby but lot of personality. Cute little cafe and an impressive mansion with a museum.

Parque Natural Municipal da Cidade is a positive surprise. It offers much more natural diversity than, for instance, Parque Lage (beware, someone posted a number of photos taken at Parque Lage here, there is no palace at Parque Natural Municipal da Cidade and, unlike Parque Lage, this nature park is far less crowded than Parque Lage. Unfortunately there seems to be no option to report misplaced photos) Parque Natural Municipal da Cidade is free to enter and comparatively remote, no busses or subway run by it. Just before the entrance there is a stretch of "Communidade" the new name for Favela, but there is car parking inside the Parque, also free, and there are endless paths of all sorts meandering through it, we have not been able to discover it all in one morning. The Museum shows old photos and artwork of Rio as it once was. Most trails are paved, but there are many more that are - well, natural, and it is recommended to wear shoes with a good profile for long hikes. As the name suggests, more of the local climates flora and fauna can be found in tranquility here than in any other park we have been to within Rio de Janeiro so far.
Rudolf M — Google review
The Museum is now open and vacine cards must be presented. Do not speed over the speed bumps but do go to the natural showers.

Good bars and restaurants along the seafront really make this area a great one for a night out (Friday and Sunday appear to be the big weekend nights). I really wouldn’t rate the actual beach this highly. It’s dirty, the plastic pollution is high on the beach as is the water pollution. The architecture and the entire internal design is a work of art and the view from the balcony is unique: looking to the left, you see Rio; to the right, the Rio-Niterói bridge. You don't need to book or buy tickets, just get there and visit (free entry). That day, I visited two exhibitions, but the one that impressed me most was the ocean exhibition. The photos of the place speak for themselves. (Original) Um lugar histórico e com uma arquitetura linda. As construções antigas são mesmo impressionantes. Fiquei encantada!
