1Itacoatiara Beach

Beach
Itacoatiara Beach, also known as Itacoa by the locals, is a popular destination in Niteroi, Brazil. Accessible by ferry boat from Praca XV or by car via the Rio-Niteroi bridge, this beach offers natural rock pools for swimming and hiking trails on nearby headlands. The area has taken steps to preserve its natural environment by prohibiting beachfront constructions of more than 2 floors. It's a surfer's paradise and a perfect retreat from city life.
Looking for the quintessential Brazilian beach close to Rio? Look no further! This beach has it all: soft sand for lounging, turquoise waters for swimming (or mostly standing in tje waves), a lifeguard tower to keep your reckless "next step" in check, and public services to make sure nature calls don't ruin your vibe. The beach is a living marketplace, with countless salesmen offering everything from sunglasses (you didn’t even know you needed a fifth pair) to grilled queijo coalho. Hungry? Fear not—beachside "quiosks" serve up freshly fried pastéis and ice-cold caipirinhas, all infused with the unmistakable taste of beachy atmosphere. Now, a word of advice: today, January 1st, the beach will test your patience, your personal space, and your ability to walk without accidentally stepping on someone's towel. It's packed tighter than a coxinha. You might find yourself wrestling for a spot in the sand or inadvertently joining someone's family picnic. It’s chaotic, vibrant, and quintessentially Brazilian. Perhaps best enjoyed on a less “national hangover” kind of day. Come here any other day of the year for perfection; today, bring patience, a sense of humor, and maybe a drone to spot free space.

Beautiful beach in Niteroi, 1 hour from Rio, worth the trip. Amazing waves, unbelievable views, with nice trails to hike.
Gustavo S — Google review
Beautiful place, if you like to surf it's a good spot. Super quiet in the wintertime. Loved this place
Alana P — Google review
Lovely beach surrounded by lovely mountains! Waves are medium strong! Mostly for surfers! Safe place but missing washrooms! Nice clean neighborhood!
Antoine A — Google review
Beautiful surfer beach with some stairs leading down to it. On days where the waves are strong you can’t swim much but the views are spectacular! There are kiosks very close behind the beach for food and drinks.
Jacob H — Google review
Very nice beach!!!:) waves amazing, beer too pricy, but it’s alright. Good atmosphere, not dangerous at all:)
Robertas O — Google review
Best one in the area, no beach in Rio comes close to this one, as a bonus you can also climb the "Costão" rock before going to the beach (30 min climb very easy). The only downside is that eventually the waves are very strong and can be kinda dangerous if you're not used to.
Leonardo M — Google review
Great place to enjoy the best of Rio de Janeiro, beautiful costline, hiking area nearby and chill ocean.

Sugarloaf Mountain, a 396m-tall peak on a peninsula with sweeping views and accessible by cableway, is one of the most iconic rocks in the world. It offers breathtaking views of Rio de Janeiro from its peak and is accessible by a thrilling glass-walled cable car journey. Additionally, visitors can enjoy an Instagram-worthy breakfast at Parque Gloria Maria with views of Guanabara Bay and Sugarloaf Mountain.
Sugarloaf Mountain (Pão de Açúcar) offers one of the most spectacular views in Rio de Janeiro! The cable car ride to the top is smooth and exciting, revealing stunning panoramas of the city, Copacabana beach, and the Christ the Redeemer statue in the distance. At sunset, the view is absolutely magical. The mountain itself is a natural wonder, perfect for photos and unforgettable memories. Whether you’re a nature lover or sightseeing adventurer, this is a must-visit landmark in Brazil. Highly recommended!
Arto L — Google review
The most spectacular place in Rio, highly recommended. Sugar Loaf Mountain has a 360-degree view, unlike Corcovado with a limited viewpoint. Sugar Loaf offers a 360-degree view. You can see the Santos Dumont Intl. Airport and runway, the bridge to Niteroi, the beaches and neighborhoods of Ipanema, Copacabana, Botafogo, Leme and Flamengo. Your photos with such a background will be excellent. There is a cafe at the top where you can see the magnificent Copacabana.
Dimo — Google review
One of the places you must visit as a tourist in Rio. The journey to the peak is in two stages, both via cable cars. The queues move quickly and the journeys are smooth. Preferential access is available for wheelchair users. The primary reason for visiting is the views, although my visit was on a very misty day and opportunities were limited. There are plenty of toilets and places for refreshments. Also upmarket souvenir stalls. Still worth visiting on a misty day!
David S — Google review
Very good attraction. It gets really busy so be prepared to be pushing and shoving. Everybody is trying to get the best spot to record the videos. They do have nice foods and souvenir shop on top of the mountain. There is always entertainment going on like live music.
Mohammed M — Google review
Sugarloaf in Rio offers breathtaking panoramic views of the city, beaches, and mountains, absolutely worth the visit. The cable car ride is smooth and scenic. It can get very crowded, especially during peak hours, so try to go early or on a weekday. There are a few shops and places to grab a snack at the top, but prices are a bit high. Still, the overall experience is unforgettable and a must-do while in Rio!
Russo G — Google review
The lines move fairly quickly and there are great views. You take two different cable cars to get to the top and you have a wristband with a QR code that you will repeatedly scan to go up and then back down in the cable cars. Definitely worth it for the views alone.
Heather S — Google review
We came with a group of six, the weather wasn’t the best to be honest. It was about 18° cloudy with a little bit of rain. There was no line probably because of that. However, we got our tickets pretty quickly on our way to the top. Everything was efficient and smooth, no complaints. I would do it again. Actually probably not. This is not something you do multiple times. Lol
Ebruhh K — Google review
The cable cars for the sugarloaf start from the Parque bondinho spot. There is a stopover at another mountain before you reach here. I recommend the place for stunning views of the city. You can also see the Cristo far away. On a nice and sunny day,Pão de Azuçar is the best choice. The name of the mountain comes from the Portuguese who used to get Sugar being shipped in containers which looked similar in shape of the mountains. This was narrated by our guide and not sure about the authenticity.

Sossego Beach, or Praia do Sossego, is a hidden gem that embodies tranquility and natural beauty. This small beach has earned an international Blue Flag sustainability certificate, highlighting its commitment to environmental preservation. Tucked away past Camboinhas, it remains relatively undiscovered by tourists, allowing for a serene atmosphere where visitors can truly unwind.
Nice quiet beach. Not easy to get there but the place is nice.
Paulo C — Google review
Beautiful secluded beach but very full of people on hot summer days. Absolutely gorgeous sunsets over Rio. There are some little barzinhos you can get caipirinhas at and you can rent chairs and umbrella if you want also. There were huge waves the day we went which was fun but you couldn’t relax in the water and had to be very careful of people on boogie boards and surf boards all fighting to be in the same small area of water. I would definitely go back, but if you’re looking for a peaceful quiet day this might not be the beach for you on a hot summer day. Update: I went back on a calm day and it was absolutely amazing and perfect. Love it and have now gone back many more times.

Beatiful small beach, very calm, lonely and private, the water was amazing and the view of Rio de Janeiro is awesome, best part of the day the sunset with the best view of the RJ bay !!!! 100% recommended, definitely come back next time.

Do you want to experience Rio´s best view? Then Parque da Cidade in Niteroi is the place for you. Fortunately it is not (yet) a very touristic spot, but trust me when I tell you that you won´t regret a visit to this stunning park. The geography (hills, mountains, ocean) is what makes Rio great, and from Parque da Cidade you will see them all, like a perfect postcard!

Niterói, located in southeast Brazil, is linked to Rio de Janeiro by a bridge over Guanabara Bay. The city boasts the striking Niterói Contemporary Art Museum, an architectural marvel created by Oscar Niemeyer. Another of Niemeyer's designs is the Teatro Popular situated to the north. Overlooking the bay to the south stands the historic Fortress of Santa Cruz da Bara with its cannons and dungeons.

Located at the end of Copacabana's beach, Copacabana Fort is a military base open to the public. It offers stunning views of the beach and ocean, as well as a chance to enjoy amenities like Confeitaria Colombo, a renowned cafe serving delicious meals. The fort also features exhibitions on Brazilian army history. Visitors can take in the expansive view of Copacabana beach while seated at outdoor cafes within the fort.
I'm all about castles and forts, and this one met the bar! It's easily accessible from either of the main beaches in Rio right on the corner of both. The entry price is beyond cheap, and the fort itself offers a fantastic bit of history and is accessible allowing you to see a good chunk both inside and on top. Highly recommend if you're in Rio! There's also a cafe with some food options offering wonderful views of Copacabana beach.
Michael L — Google review
Lovely spot to watch the sunset with great views of Copacabana and the coastline. There’s a small museum (in Portuguese) that gives some interesting historical context, and it was very cool to see how the old military gun operates. Entry is around $2 USD—cash only—so bring some local currency. A peaceful and scenic place to explore away from the crowds.
Amy S — Google review
There are huge cannon, small cannons, and ammunitions displaced used to protect the Fort on the Copacabana Beach. The beach is beautiful overview from the Fortress.
Henry T — Google review
Few minutes walk from the Copacabana beach and close to the Fairmont Hotel, this fort has a museum, lots of cafes and beautiful views of the sea. You will enjoy a nice stroll, having something to eat at the cafes enjoying the nice scenery and learn a little bit of history or this fort and other forts in surrounding Rio that were used to protect the country back in the day from other groups such as the French.
Ali K — Google review
Highly recommended. There are cafes along the sea front within the fort offering great views of Copacabana beach. The history of the Fort is well-preserved and presented in various displays and exhibitions. Make sure you go down the path to the main infrastructure under the main 305mm cannons which shows how life was at the fort.
Andy M — Google review
For an unknown reason the tickets were free the day we visit. But even paying the entrance fee this place is worth your money. If you like learning about history this is definitely a place for you.

Nestled in the vibrant heart of Icarai, Campo de São Bento is a delightful public park that offers an inviting escape from the urban bustle. Spanning over 20 acres, this green oasis features serene walking paths and picturesque ponds, making it ideal for leisurely strolls or peaceful picnics. Families will appreciate the well-equipped playgrounds and various activities available for children.
Opening hours 7am-7pm. It's an amazing park. It's a big park with several different divided parts One part is one for animals. One part is pet friendly, with a dog gate, a part with animals, 🪿 🦆🦢 Lots of fishes in the ponds. one part that has big kid ground, and it's a good layout with many entrances to the park Weekend, there is always something going on, and there is always a market on Sundays.

Take a relaxing walk through the green park with a pond. Have a picnic. Play chess at a table. Sit at a bench and watch the birds. Check out the small “petting farm” of ducks and geese. Take your kids to the huge park. Grab some food at one of the kiosks. There are plenty of things to do here to enjoy your day.

Such a beautiful place and an awesome weather as well! We’re lucky because a pottery event was happening on saturday. Also the place counts with a theatre. The view from Rio is incredible!

This is a wonderful park dedicated to iconic Brazilian journalist Gloria Maria. The actual building within the park accentuates celebrated Brazilian art and the park and building ruins offer magnificent vistas of Rio. Within the park is a charming outdoor cafe and the washrooms within the grounds are well maintained. This attraction is well worth a visit when in the Santa Teresa district of Rio particularly on a sunny day.
Peter K — Google review
Parque das Ruínas is one of my favorite spots in Santa Teresa, the artsy, bohemian heart of Rio. The mix of modern structures built into the old, crumbling mansion walls gives the place so much character. Climbing to the top is a must—the panoramic view over Rio is incredible, with clear sights of Pão de Açúcar and Cristo Redentor standing out beautifully. I also loved the art exhibition in the basement, which added an unexpected cultural touch. And, if you need a break, there’s a cozy outdoor café perfect for a coffee. It’s a place that feels special and is definitely worth a visit!

A hidden gem with stunning view of sugar loaf. Unfortunately it was being refurbished when we visited so most areas were closed to the public, but I've been before and recommend walking around the ruin and going all the way to the top for an amazing 360 panoramic view. There are also various musical events on regularly in the cultural centre (within the ruins), check schedule to time your visit and get something extra.

Great hike up. Nice monkeys on the route; but don’t feed them! Great views across Copacabana and the Sugar Loaf. Bathrooms are only available at the top. Oh, and it’s cash only.
Steve C — Google review
There’s only one thing to say about this fort and that is it is definitely worth visiting for the views of Rio! The hike itself is a steady, uphill climb, along a cobbled street. So if you are able, it is well worth making the climb up to the fort. Entry was R$10 when I visited, which is more than reasonable. I would highly recommended making the effort to come here, if you can, as it is more than worth the entry fee a climb to the top!!
Stephen N — Google review
Underrated mini-trek up a mountain for amazing views. It’s free and only takes 20 minutes to walk up (1.2km up and another 1.2km back down). It’s a bit weird as you are walking through a military base, but the soldiers are all friendly and the views from the summit are worth it, as are the little monkeys who welcome you at the top. There were very few people when I visited - it doesn’t seem to be a thing that people are aware of - which is a huge shame as it’s a well-maintained site with excellent views (and cute monkeys).
Andy W — Google review
Very secure, as it's part of the military base. We went on a Tuesday and admission was free (January 2025). You'll hike up a cobbled service road - wear something comfortable. Great views of Copacabana beach and Sugarloaf Mountain up on top, and also monkeys!
Kas T — Google review
If you are nearby, this is a great activity. A challenging, but not too long, hike up to a fantastic view. Monkeys along the walk are fun to watch. They may even visit with you.
Mark S — Google review
A beautiful place where you can meet Mico primates that are curious and friendly. They’re the size of a small cat and they jump between branches. We were lucky enough to get approached by a mother with a two kids. The fort offers a great view of Copacabana and the nearby favela. The entrance is free and they are bathrooms at the fort. We didnt need to wait to enter.
Chris L — Google review
Gorgeous view, with several monkeys on the way to the top and on the top. You'll have a beautiful view of Copacabana and the hike is not demanding at all, it took me less than 30 minutes.

Free entrance fee! This place is fair and treats all equally! Great views of the beach and nearby surroundings! There are clean washrooms and lots of benches! There is a hill to walk up (Unlike the other fortress at the other end of copacabana) but it is easy to medium difficulty. The other one is 6 reals to enter and there is no hill. This trail contains around 15 Jesús and religious stones. See my other reviews.

Casa Cavé is a historic pastry shop and café located in Rio de Janeiro, dating back to 1860. The charming colonial décor with aging walls and cracked floors adds to its allure, offering a glimpse into the city's past. Founded by French immigrant Charles Auguste Cavé, it has been frequented by noble citizens and renowned figures throughout history.
Lovely old cafe bakery with numerous DELICIOUS savory (ex. empanada) and sweet (ex. eclairs) baked goods. All reasonably priced and high quality. You get a card when you enter and then select your baked goods (show them your card) and take them to your table, where a server will come for your drink order (and associate the charge with your card). Upon finishing, you take your card to the cashier where you pay for all your purchased items. If you "lose" your card (you must show it to exit), you pay a significantly higher penalty fee as they don't know what all you may have consumed. Bathrooms are upstairs and small. Overall a great experience and a nice establishment - a must for baked good lovers!
Jason Z — Google review
Very good cafe. Baked products are very nicely balanced. Not to sweet. Coffee is good. Not extremely busy
Miggs — Google review
Old and historical cafe / bakery in the heart of old Rio. The place definitely looks the part. The pastries are quite unique. They are very sweet and decadent, I suggest you split them between two people because they are quite big and very sweet. They pair very well with the coffee. When you walk in, you will get a card from the doorman. Then you can either take a seat on the tables and be served by a waiter or go to the pastry counter and order there. I suggest look at the pastries in the counter first so you get an idea of what pastries you'd like them order them on the table.

They had really delicious Pastel De Nata. The taste exactly the same in Portugal. But the price was too expensive for just small Pastel de nata.

Order the coxinha de galinha (chicken drumstick) even if they try to tell you that it is quite ‘large’. It was fresh, juicy chicken and much better than the coxinha chicken with cream cheese where they shred the chicken.

Oldest cafe in the city. The staff are very nice from the security in the front to the ladies behind the counter. The sweets are also good. Not as popular as the nearby colombo, but definitely worth visiting for someone with a sweet tooth.

In Centro Rio, offers Portuguese food/snacks. I ordered a NATIONAL beer, expecting a Brazilian beer like Brahma, to my surprise the waitress brought me a very cold Super Bock and a very cold glass. Very good food, service in a very cozy setting. Like many places in Centro, they close at 6:00 p.m.

Surfing beach with natural rock pools for swimming & hiking trails on nearby headlands.

Beautiful place, if you like to surf it's a good spot. Super quiet in the wintertime. Loved this place
Alana P — Google review
Beautiful surfer beach with some stairs leading down to it. On days where the waves are strong you can’t swim much but the views are spectacular! There are kiosks very close behind the beach for food and drinks.

Lovely beach surrounded by lovely mountains! Waves are medium strong! Mostly for surfers! Safe place but missing washrooms! Nice clean neighborhood!

Alexandre G — Google review
Interesting place, a hidden gem. Bit shabby but lot of personality. Cute little cafe and an impressive mansion with a museum.
Vera M — Google review
Parque Natural Municipal da Cidade is a positive surprise. It offers much more natural diversity than, for instance, Parque Lage (beware, someone posted a number of photos taken at Parque Lage here, there is no palace at Parque Natural Municipal da Cidade and, unlike Parque Lage, this nature park is far less crowded than Parque Lage. Unfortunately there seems to be no option to report misplaced photos) Parque Natural Municipal da Cidade is free to enter and comparatively remote, no busses or subway run by it. Just before the entrance there is a stretch of "Communidade" the new name for Favela, but there is car parking inside the Parque, also free, and there are endless paths of all sorts meandering through it, we have not been able to discover it all in one morning. The Museum shows old photos and artwork of Rio as it once was. Most trails are paved, but there are many more that are - well, natural, and it is recommended to wear shoes with a good profile for long hikes. As the name suggests, more of the local climates flora and fauna can be found in tranquility here than in any other park we have been to within Rio de Janeiro so far.
Rudolf M — Google review
The Museum is now open and vacine cards must be presented. Do not speed over the speed bumps but do go to the natural showers.
Rita M — Google review
Nice, still well kept. Sadly the parking lot is always full as the residents of the neighbor favela use it as their own. The administrator is pathetic.

Praia de Icaraí is an iconic beach located on Guanabara Bay, known for its two famous rock formations and as a venue for various public events. Often compared to Copacabana, it boasts high-rise buildings, bustling commerce, lively bars and restaurants, and a vibrant promenade. Despite the bay's pollution making it unsuitable for swimming, the beach offers a pleasant setting for leisurely strolls.
It's a genuine lovey beach. Well taken care of and always good for morning walks. Dog friendly both on sand and on the kiosks Highly recommend:)

This beach is all about the view! The water is in a bay so it is often quite dirty and a lot of trash washes up on the beach unfortunately. There’s no places to rent chairs and umbrellas but there are some kiosks for getting coconut water and it’s a nice place to walk or jog along the beiramar.

Good bars and restaurants along the seafront really make this area a great one for a night out (Friday and Sunday appear to be the big weekend nights). I really wouldn’t rate the actual beach this highly. It’s dirty, the plastic pollution is high on the beach as is the water pollution. It’s such a shame to see what would be an amazing beach ruined by plastic and pollution. I really hope the city try and clean this up.

Nestled in the Jadrim Botanico district of Rio's Zona Sul, the Botanical Garden of Rio de Janeiro is a historic park that boasts a rich variety of flora and fauna. Established in 1808 and opened to the public in 1822, this sprawling garden spans 54 cultivated hectares and is home to an impressive collection of 6,500 different plants.
Cash only for tickets at the entrance. Easier to buy online before you go. Huge. Lots to see. Good playground for kids by the cafe. Washrooms are few and far between so plan ahead!

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ I absolutely loved this place! It is truly awesome and incredibly beautiful — a spot where you could easily spend hours just walking around and enjoying the scenery. The garden is full of different paths where you can explore for a long time without ever getting bored. Along the way, you can spot exotic animals, discover unique plants, and admire countless flowers in a variety of shapes and colors. It feels like a true oasis in the middle of the city. There is also a lovely café in the middle of the garden, perfect if you need a break or just want to sit down and enjoy the view. The whole area is very clean, spacious, and well-maintained, which makes the visit even more enjoyable. A wonderful experience overall, and definitely a place worth visiting!

We road our bikes here from the Sheraton. You do not need to buy tickets in advance on a weekday. Gorgeous views, nice place to drink a coffee or have lunch. I also love monkeys, so seeing one was fun.
Chelsea T — Google review
The park is amazing! The best place to spend a few hours in while it’s hot outside. I saw incredible monkeys and birds, also cute lizards. The flora and fauna there is really worth seeing. I am really glad I got to visit the park. The only issue is the process of buying a ticket. Foreign tourists can do it only offline and with cash… so strange and really inconvenient
Darina L — Google review
Arguably the most underrated place to visit in Rio. We paid BRL80 per person to enter and spent 3 hours. You can fins cute monkeys running about and the scenery is absolutely gorgeous.
Filip M — Google review
First place that I find the employees that are like Americans where they seem to hate their job and just sap your energy by being close to them. But that was just a few of them. Other than that, it was a very wonderful experience. It’s beautifully manicured and laid out expansive and beautiful monkeys and butterflies, Bromeliads and all sorts of cool stuff. Very definitely worth the experience and the fee. With the fee it keeps all of the small annoyances at bay. Thanks for this experience
Shawn R — Google review
Enjoyed a day out at the botanical garden. Bought tickets on the day though waited as the office opens at 11am but you’re allowed to wait around at seating area. The Garden cafe onsite was a great place to enjoy a nice lunch whether a light bite or full meal with Brazilian food menu options available. You can get a visitors guide/ map to navigate around the garden.
