(Translated by Google) Mount Nishi-Azuma, one of Japan's 100 Famous Mountains, stands at 2,035 meters.
This is the most beautiful of Japan's 100 Famous Mountains I've ever visited. If you choose the right season and weather, you can witness a dazzling display of crimson maple leaves and a vibrant array of colors.
Driving from Yamagata City early in the morning, it takes about an hour to reach the Yumoto Cable Car Station at the foot of the mountain. The station opens at 8:00 AM, and the round-trip ticket is 4,500 yen. The large gondola takes about 10 minutes to the Tengendai Plateau station, where you transfer to a small double ski lift. After three transfers, it takes about 40 minutes to reach the trailhead.
The trailhead is already 1,800 meters above sea level, and the cable car alone ascends 900 meters. The scenery is breathtaking. The initial path is a narrow forest path, but after about half an hour, you'll reach the mountain ridge, where crimson and yellow maple leaves burst forth, and the expansive view unfolds. The gentle ascent and descent is truly relaxing, reminiscent of a scene from Howl's Moving Castle. There aren't many forks along the way, mostly on wooden plank roads. After about half an hour, you'll reach a spring where water flows out. From there, you'll begin climbing a rocky path, and after about another half-hour, you'll reach Brahma Rock.
The scenery here is beautiful, with a sea of giant rocks. After about 10 minutes, you'll reach the fork in the road at the shrine, where you can choose to make an O-shaped path back and forth.
After about 20 minutes, you'll reach the summit. There's no triangulation point at the summit, just a signpost and pillars nestled in the forest. The area isn't very large. Further up the mountain, you can make an O-shaped path back and forth, but since we were pressed for time this time, we chose to make the same path back and forth.
After descending, we visited the shrine again. Most people took the O-shaped path, so we didn't stay long before descending. The spring water after descending was refreshing, perfect for washing off the dirt from climbing the rocks. After descending, we ended our satisfying journey with a thrilling ride on the ski lift, which felt like a swing in the sky.
Excluding the cable car, the round trip takes about 3.5 hours, covering a distance of about 3.5 kilometers and a total of about 400 meters. If the weather is good, it is a very relaxing and pleasant hike to Baimingshan.
