South Lake Tahoe

South Lake Tahoe is a California resort city on Lake Tahoe, in the Sierra Nevada mountains. It’s known for nearby ski resorts and beaches, like El Dorado Beach, with its picnic areas. The city’s restaurants and bars merge with the casinos of adjacent Stateline, Nevada. Van Sickle Bi-State Park has wooded trails and lake views. West of the city, Emerald Bay State Park includes Vikingsholm, a 1929 Nordic-style mansion.

My Dad and I have been coming skiing here for five years now and love it. Good challenging runs, moguls, trees, but also relaxing runs and chill runs to bring sister on. Galaxy and Stagecoach are our favorites!
Went here for vacay to snowboard with my wife. Beautiful scenery and some of the most amazing views of any mountain resort. Observation deck views and top of mountain shots of Lake Tahoe are majestic. Rated this 4stars because of the below: - food and beverage costs are a little bullish even for a resort of this caliber. - only has one decent green run for those starting out as beginners post taking lessons. Good mountain for intermediate and advanced skiers and snowboarders. Would caution visiting here if you are a beginner looking to practice towards intermediate. Since there is only 1 true green run of length. Lift tickets are crazy expensive ($250+ per day) if you buy at the ticket window. Get an Epic pass months before and you’ll only pay ~$150 per day.
Heavenly is really nice. I really Like the Nevada part. Even on weekend not that crowded. What I don't really understand that during the week the beginner lift is closed and the lift for the Olympic run is always closed.
Have visited Heavenly several times over the last two summers! Love the coaster, enjoyed their Sunday yoga class. We enjoy playing games at the Lodge or taking the ski lift.
The best resort at Lake Tahoe for practicing on-piste skiing, with wide and long blue runs suitable for all levels. I like to practice small turns and carving big turns on the slopes, and the lift lines are shorter than at other resorts.
It's worth the expense to take the gondola first to the observation deck for fantastic views. Then up to the Lodge Area (no views from here). Also, take the six person ski lift to the summit for great views.
We took the gondola to the overlook and then to the resort . It has a beautiful view. The resort area has lots of activities to choose from. It was a great experience.
Take the gondala ride. A bit pricey,$70, but worth it for the views and hikes. At the end of the gondola, you can also take the chair up to the very top.

Closed. But not really. Don't let "closed" deter you from going here. Arrive early as the lot seems to fill on nice days. Easy walk downhill to waters edge and buildings. Closed only means you can't enter the castle. Yet there is still so much to appreciate surrounded by nature and interesting architecture. Hike to the falls. And be sure to go the extra 0.2 to the upper falls. That's just a bit past the bridge that goes over the lower falls area. The hike up isn't long but may take some encouragement for the younger ones. Footing is flat wide and pebbles. The bottom has a dock, still waters, falls, buildings and gentle wildlife. May even make friends with a duck.
Absolutely stunning area to visit. Best to come early to get a park. $3 for 1 hour or $10 for the day. It’s a 1.6km walk down to the water. The walk up is quite steep but plenty of opportunities to stop along the way with bench seats. Would recommend to anyone visiting the lake to do this walk.
Very cool home nestled right next to emerald bay at Lake Tahoe. Pretty easy mile or so hike down to the home. It cost 18 dollars per adult to take the tour but it was very worth to cost. Also keep in mind parking is a mess and isn’t free. We parked about a half mile away from the start of the one mile hike. The detail on the home is amazing and it is truly an amazing story of wealth, generosity, and love for others. If you can make it go!! Also neat short hike behind the home to eagle falls. Shore swimming in the lake if you want to cool off too!
If Vikingsholm is open and you plan to swim, definitely go down the trail. Otherwise, I’d recommend skipping the hike because the view from Inspiration Point is even better and less effort.
"Finest Scandinavian Architecture" in entire North America is very aptly ascribed to this fine villa. Built with Passion and Love, the solitary house stands out amongst all the other Holiday Homes of the Rich & Mighty of the 20th Century USA.
A very unique home at Lake Tahoe..as far as historical homes, this seems very liveable. It's on the Emerald Bay part of Tahoe which is aptly named. There is a boat ride to the home which can be very windy even on a hot day. The boat ride captain has a wealth of knowledge about the area! This may be my favorite home of all time.
Great hike on Emerald Bay. Be warned it's an easy walk down but a steep hike back up to the parking lot, so it is NOT for physically challenged people or anyone with a heart condition. This is clearly signposted several times but I get the idea people ignore it Extremely rewarding views, and we even saw a bear sow with her cubs, right in the path.
Beautiful place. Hike is somewhat challenging back up. Go before 9:00 a.m. Even though it doesn't open yet or you will not get parking at the top. Beach is pretty, however after a few hours boaters come and completely take over would not recommend as a beach day

Beautiful wooded trails around the site and structures as well as water access that you can bike to. There was a private event happening while we visited but we were still able to bike/walk around and explore.
Carolyn was our tour guide, she made it so fun. We learned a lot about the home and history. Our favorite stop on this trip. And the grounds are beautiful.
I tend to think things don't change much but they do. We took the road around Tahoe to go to Tallac Historic Site. Tallac consists of several summer homes built by wealthy San Franciscans. In those days there was no road to the area. Everything came in by boat - building materials, workers, servants and owners. BEAUTIFUL area - shoreline, forest surrounded homes. Relaxing walk and beautiful views. Come during week if possible to avoid the crowds.
Fantastic hiking area along the beach in South lake Tahoe. Rich folks in the early 1900s built log cabins and other buildings you can still see today. Lots of volunteer support for this historical site, be sure to visit the working blacksmith, the artist hut, and the boathouse. You can park at several different lots and there is even a visitor's center and museum. There is also a gift shop that has a great section on the Washoe Indians, and some delicious popsicles for sale. Take a half a day and hike and explore the Tallac historical site and it's many interesting attractions.
We loved learning about the history of Lake Tahoe and the early summer homes of the rich as well as the Washoe Tribe who were the original residents. It has a crazy resort town flavor all around the lake.
Great place to see the Baldwin Estate, the Pope Estate and the Valhalla Estate, all built in early 1900's. Also a great place to enough the lake, take a walk or ride a bike thru the woods. A small Museum awaits the curious visitors. Restrooms and Parking available.
Beautiful area with a very nice walking path along the lake. The museum was a great experience (especially the kitchen area). All for free...awesome. We'll return to the Historic Tallac area each time we visit the area.
Beautiful views and property right on the lake. Nice walking trails.

Always visit here when in the area. The rainbow trail is easy and is scenic. No salmon in October this year, which is a big part of why we went now. Oh well, still a pretty place to visit. This place gets very busy, so go early to find parking and possibly smaller crowds. We went at 9am on a Friday and it was pretty busy. There are bathrooms here as well.
Fantastic small visitor's center near the Tallac historical site, be sure to grab a map and take the several available trails including the rainbow and sky trails. This includes easy access to the beach, dogs are welcome and can be seen regularly while exploring the trails. The visitor's center has a good gift shop with plenty of neat curios and items to purchase along with friendly staff to answer your questions, this area also overlaps with Kiva beach access.
Super crowded on a Saturday. Paved trail, subpar views, a lot of marsh, the area to view the fish is smaller than ideal, and the salmon were not spawning (not anyone’s fault just keep in mind). However there is plenty of parking, the restrooms were okay, and the mountain views are as always beautiful.
So beautiful walking this trail in the fall. Gorgeous weather this past week made for stunning colors of the yellow Aspen trees and blue Tahoe skies. Easy walk for families. Fun to get to veer off and walk down to the always stunning shore of Lake Tahoe.
The Rainbow Loop was a great walk through the wetlands on the boardwalk. Took us about an hour with meandering and putzing and reading informative plaques. We saw frogs and minnows and trout! The volunteer docents were a great resource and super informative.
This place is such a gem, don't hesitate to go if you're in the area! The reopened stream observation chamber is wonderful, the kids would look forever if I let them. Friendly for three generations to visit, with just a short loop and easy flat ground the whole way, with many benches to sit along the way. Paired with free parking, restrooms (and clean port a potties when the visitor center is closed), and Kiva Beach next door, you can't go wrong.
Perfect stroller loop walk with the young kiddos. Wildlife, educational plaques and beautiful sights. September is a little too soon for the Kokanee Salmon spawn but the creek is clean and clear. Great place to be in nature.
Forestry Service Taylor Creek "Park" provides a beautiful "easy" walk amongst wetlands of Lake Tahoe. Great scenery, great views of a different part of Tahoe. Submerged viewing area (see photo) created to view spawning salmon. Unfortunately this year Tahoe levels are too low for salmon to reach this area. Still a beautiful part of Tahoe I have not previously seen and worth the visit.

It's beautiful here... And the water was calm. This was the beach on a Monday. Empty except for a few families away from where we were. We were biking but I wish we had clothes to take a swim. The weather was nice .. surprised the water wasn't as cold. Clear waters. I would love to come back again. This spot if you want a day with your family. Plenty of parking and their was a bathroom close by. Picnic tables too
This place is not the ideal spot for a peaceful weekend getaway. It’s packed with loud music playing everywhere, which completely defeats the purpose of connecting with nature. To top it off, they charge $12 for parking.
We got here today, and it was 66° outside with breezy wind. Not harsh wind. The water was cold to the touch, but once you get in your body, adjust to it. The water is so clear and beautiful. It's better than the Bay Beach near hwy 1. Family of 4. Costs $12 to enter. Lots of spaces and picnic tables to eat. Come early for better parking close to seating at the beach. No reservations are needed.
Perfect Tuesday! My favorite beach in Tahoe. Just wanted to some down time. Now you can hang with the masses of people bbqing, playing music and games, renting kayaks and paddle boards or you can drive a little farther down and find a private spot. Love that they have clean bathrooms with frequent attendant care. I believe the beach closes sometime in Oct so check the schedule.
Hey there! I recently visited Pope Beach for the 4th of July fireworks, and let me tell you, the beach itself is absolutely gorgeous! The views and sandy beaches are truly stunning. However, I did encounter some challenges with the staff during my visit. Unfortunately, they were not able to accept my handicap passes Great American state park pass and the federal all access handicap pass one also, and the parking fee was higher than usual at $45 instead of $12. Despite the cancellation of the fireworks show, some staff members seemed unaware and unhelpful. I even asked for assistance due to my breathing issues, but was met with resistance she stated “ I don’t want the liability”! It would have been nice to receive a bit more support and understanding in that situation. Overall, I still enjoyed the beauty of the beach, but I hope the staff can work on being more accommodating in the future. ( lady staff was rude) NO HANDICAP passes accepted.
Beautiful beach. Not very crowded. Plenty of parking ($12). Clean and soft sand. Kayaking options available.
This is my favorite beach as a former SLT local. Its inexpensive, has bathrooms and picnic tables all along the beach. Its LONG. They keep it so clean. It's a great place to launch a kayak or SUP board. Very family friendly. My only issue is tourists. They can be inconsiderate, playing loud music at times or letting theor children terrorize the local geese and ducks. If you go during the week its better.
Easily reached from South Tahoe Visitor Center, enough Parking. Beach is clean and good for a lazy day out, Walk or Bike. Great view of Lake and the Sierra Nevada range.

A short hike to the fall and another 30 minutes will take you to the lake. Amazing views throughout. It’s not too challenging to the lake and I recommend the hike. Parking is limited, but if you wait, someone is bound to leave.
The parking is the worse part about this hike. There are few spots available at the trailhead. We parked about a mile up the road In a larger parking spot which was nice the walk down to the trail was interesting. The was a fun hike to eagle falls. The initial hike to the falls is quick and easy to get to, there is a small pond before the falls. The longer hike is a longer hike but it was a great workout with beautiful views. When you finally get to the lake it’s an amazing few with clear blue water and only a few people make the climb all the way to the lake so it’s was nice and quite up there to soak up the beauty of nature.
GO EARLY!!!!! Parking is a nightmare later on. There are very few spots in the lot so you end up having to park on the road and walking back down to it. Be careful parking because you will likely have to park right up to the rock face. The falls are no big deal at least it wasn't when we were there but the real gem is to make the 30 minute hike to the lake. Gorgeous place to hang out. It gets crowded but is enjoyable. There is a rope swing along the right side of the lake. Very picturesque- reminds me of the Canadian Rockies.
Beautiful scenery, so peaceful and blue. From lower Eagle Falls to upper Eagle falls, a nice hike. Parking is limited and $5 at trail. Porty potty at the trailhead. There are little scenic stops on the road there. You won’t be disappointed at the views.
The hike up to the lake is fairly easy, but there is about 500 feet of elevation gain. The views along the trail are spectacular, and the lake itself is stunning. The water was crystal clear, and the area is quite beautiful.
The hike to the falls from the parking lot is relatively short, but it’s almost all stone steps. About halfway there’s a nice level patch with a good view of the falls and a bench to take a break. The bridge over the falls offers a beautiful view down the valley with the lake in the distance. Go early. Parking fills up FAST.
The Eagle Falls hike is moderately difficult, though not particularly strenuous, and is a popular, family-friendly trail. While short, the hike includes steep, rocky sections and stone steps, making it tiring for some (like me). Taken slow, the beautiful views of the waterfall and Emerald Bay make the effort totally worthwhile.
Definitely hard parking during peak season so be mindful! Easy 10-15 minute walk to falls, lots of stairs! East- Moderate 1-2 hour hike to lake, but worth for the view!

Q&A about South Lake Tahoe

South Lake Tahoe has more options and a beach if you can stand the cold. Many moons ago we would drive to the State line and then go back a block or two and find a motel with a hot tub and close enough to walk home if you stay at a casino longer. Don't miss Emerald Bay by hike or boat ride.

I'm going to put a plug in for Telluride. You can ski up to 7 days on Epic there, it has a similar skiable terrain as Vail, but must have 10% of the people there. This is the place to go if you want to spend your time skiing, not waiting in lift lines. I've never waited in a lift line here. Oh, and it hosts the highest restaurant in North America, Alpino Vino, with a phenomenal wine selection (you will be drunk halfway through your first glass thanks to altitude). Solid apres scene, and if you need a relaxation day, the nearby town of Ouray offers natural hot springs.
