The staff at the overlook cafe was phenomenal. I gave this zoo an extra star just for the staff at the cafe. Customer service matters! The bad: The exhibits were small and often left me feeling bad for the animals because it seemed too small for animals of their size and normal range. My biggest complaint though is not enough bathrooms and the signs directing you around the park were awful. Very confusing and not enough of them.

We took the train ride around the perimeter of the zoo and it did end up breaking down while we were on it and we sat in the hot sun waiting for it to be fixed. The bathrooms outside do not have working AC so using the bathroom is like sitting in a stinky sauna. There are no changing tables in the men’s rooms. They had one mist thing going towards the exit of the zoo, it was refreshing to walk through but I would have been nice to have those throughout the whole zoo.

Was in Montgomery for training and I had a few minutes. So, I parked and explored. I walked through the tunnel. and noticed that some of the original buildings were renovated along with the train station. Got some great pics. Then continud on to the river. This is a great area to visit. There is a nature trail attached to this site. Two hotel chains near by within walking distance, and a bar and amphitheatre . But the prize is the Rover boat Harriet that greets you are coming out of the tunnel and the mighty Alabama River. Check out my pics, there are a few where the original bank used to be compared to now. That may put mighty on to perspective. You also get a brief history also. Will be back for a River boat ride!

It looks pretty round down, but the bathrooms are fairly new. This is what the person at the gate told me. I did not check them out since I have a bathroom in my camper. The roads are terrible, and the grounds are not manicured or well kept. I would’ve not left a review if it wasn’t for what I experienced. I am highly allergic to poison ivy and I have never been to any campground or even a public park that had as much poison ivy as this camp ground. I looked everywhere I stepped, but it is Almost impossible to not step on it. I spent three nights, on the third night I started breaking out; by the time I got to my home from my 2 Hour drive I had poison ivy all over. If you are highly allergic to poison ivy, avoid this park. I did ride my bike several times to Katoma (the other section of the park) and that one looks much better, manicured and taken care of. Since the sites are concrete you do not have to worry about stepping all over the poison ivy to get inside of your camper, but I am not sure if that section also has it all around the woods and trails. I rode my bike in the streets of that section (did not go inside the camp sites to explore the surrounding area) be safe if you stay there!

(Those galley stairs are no joke!) This boat is special not just because my aunt Lainey is one of the managers & Captain Jim is my uncle. It’s more than that. When I first moved back to Alabama in 2013, after my late husband died; This boat and all the crew were a part of my healing. It was a safe place, a place to leave all your cares on the dock, even if it’s for two hours at a time. When I slowly started dating again, they had to pass the Riverboat test. 🤣🤣 if they can survive the whole crew & bands maybe they can hang 🤣🤣🤣. I have since remarried and Captain Jim officiated our wedding💞 It’s been a place safe to bring my children. When they were going through a loss no child should experience at such tender ages, Each person became another dad, another Uncle, a big brother, big sister, an auntie. They made time to put a smile on their faces.
