Palazzo Baldassarre - Museo dell'Uomo di Altamura offers a fascinating insight into the discovery and history of the hominid, showcasing numerous artifacts from that era. Visitors can enjoy a 3D video that immerses them in the researchers' work and the remarkable discovery. The museum is enriched by passionate and knowledgeable staff who provide informative tours, making it an enriching experience for visitors.
absolutely amazing experience here at Museo dell'Uomo di Altamura. the guide was so passionate and explained the whole story about the prehistoric Altamura man. she gave us so much information while we watched the 3D immersive video of the cave where the man’s bones are. she even showed us around the exhibit. tickets were very affordable at €4 for a full price ticket. definitely recommend giving this place a visit.

Definitively the best place to learn about the Altamura man. Well organized and maintained, interested staff, thoughtful exhibits. Enjoy your visit!

Loved the museum, and was impressed by the passion and knowledge of the tour guide that welcomed us! The exhibition is not huge but incredibly well organised. Definitely worth a visit, don't miss it if you are in Altamura.

Most informative video and staff explaining on the discovery of the uomo di altamura. Recommended!

I love this museum. It is short and sweet. I am an American from Texas living in Northern Italy, wishing I was living in Southern Italy and every chance I get, I try to get to Puglia. I highly recommend a short trip into Altamura to see this museum on one of the most exciting archaeological discoveries of an ancient human skeleton found in a cave just in 1989! The skeleton was found in 1993 after four years of exploration by archaeologists. The skeleton is believed to be very old and is cemented into the cave mineral stalactites. Most impressive is the 3D film that takes you into the cave, filmed in 2013, I believe. The staff was so excited to tell the story and host us throughout the museum route, she let me practice my little Italian while I asked questions and she explained everything in perfect English. Last year marked the 30th anniversary of the discovery of Altamura Man in the Lamalunga cave system in the Murgia plateau. Altamura is also such a beautiful city to visit, famous for its bread and pugliese cuisine! I hope to return again soon!
Sam T — Google review
Small museum with not very engaging exhibits. I felt I wasted my time (the main attraction is the same 3d movie you can watch in the Lamalunga visitor center)

We've been very kindly and warmly welcomed to visit the museum. Besides it being very interesting, Donatella, the lady who welcomed us (actually very close to the closing time), was very qualified and professional and it was clear to us that she is very passionate about her job. We really recommend to visit this museum.

If you are in Altamura, specially with kids, you can’t miss this museum where you’ll learn about the Altamura Neanderthal man and many more amazing discoveries in the area. Donatella is the best guide, so passionate about her work!

Cathedral
Sights & Landmarks
The Cathedral of Saint Mary of the Assumption is a historic 13th-century cathedral with intricate stone carvings adorning its exterior door. Commissioned by Frederick II, it suffered damage from an earthquake in 1316 but was reconstructed under the leadership of Robert of Anjou. The cathedral stands as a testament to Altamura's rich history, surrounded by ancient neighborhoods and offering visitors a glimpse into the city's diverse cultural influences.
This Church was an amazing stop while walking through the historic center of Altamura. The inside is extremely impressive and beautiful. The murals and statues are amazing. Saint Mary is a recommended stop.

Absolutely gorgeous and well-kept cathedral in the old town. We could visit the premises through the courtesy of the keeper who was about to close the doors.

The Saint Mary Cathedral in Altamura is a stunning example of Romanesque architecture, featuring intricate stone carvings and a striking bell tower. Its interior boasts colorful frescoes and an impressive rose window. A must-visit for anyone interested in history and architecture.

Got lucky. Came after closing time but because a wedding was on was able to go in (as others were also doing). Watched some bits of it from the first floor museum. I thought the diosecan museum was interesting. Good English explanations.

Archaeological museum
The Museo Nazionale Archeologico, located in Bari, is housed in the spacious rooms of the Episcopio's first floor. It showcases a collection of historical and cultural heritage items related to the Christian roots of the people from Bari. The museum offers an interesting journey through the Paleolithic age and features a variety of very old artifacts. While English translations are limited, it provides a unique opportunity to explore Italy's history.
Museum is affiliated with other museums in southern Italy; focused on interpretation and research on archeology, culture and natural wonders of the Alta Murgia region; karst topography dominates. Major display is Altamura Man, a Paleolithic Neanderthal discovered in a nearby cave. Entrance is a modest 5 euros; staff are friendly and helpful. Street parking can be found.
Jim T — Google review
unfortunately the classical age expositiom was in renovation. the prehistoric exhibition was large and interesting with a lot of explanations and 3D models to understand better the pieces at the exhibition. Still the contents were too technical with exceeding attention about stone instruments that is any difficult with a lot of names. The location is not the best, outdoor areas dirty and in disorder, pity, Altamura old town has got a lot of beautiful buildings, museum is located in a brutalist building of modern era .

Fun small-ish museum (2 floors), with lots of very old artifacts. Limited English translations, but it's in Italy. Of course the language is Italian! Some of the staff did speak English, and were extremely nice and accommodating.
Kathryn F — Google review
Truly disappointing in almost any sense. The best is the staff, who assist you in buying a ticket from a self service panel!? Waste of public money in a shameful manner. Have a look at Museo Baldassarre, this could be the benchmark. More engagement and thought wanted!
Reiner B — Google review
We enjoyed viewing the collection and were pleasantly surprised by scope of it. For international visitors, more translated panels or signage would greatly enhance the experience.

Tre Archi is a magical and authentic place in Puglia that offers an excellent dining experience. The restaurant has a varied menu with a focus on every tiny detail, including gluten-free options. The owners are known for their hospitality and the restaurant has various floors, including a rooftop area which is quite unusual for the location. In addition to their renowned pizzas, Tre Archi also offers a wide selection of antipasti, primi and secondi piatti made with fresh local produce.
Excellent food, service and atmosphere! The affogato after dinner is a must! Great wine selection.

The overall I gave 5 stars. For the food, I really impressed by how freshness of the salad. The fried cod with the chickpeas is fine, but the smash chickpeas is a bit salty. The main dish is half portion, because the I was a bit full after appetitzer and salad. They were kind to offer me half of the portion. However the lamb was a bit fatty and with mostly bone and not much meat. Good thing is it’s full of flavor. Amazing wine Celler with impressive collection. Mina was so kind to show me around. Next time has to try different wine. Will suggest to have wine pairing menu with the set menu. Service is great and friendly. But sometimes when the food being served, they can’t explained what’s the sauce and how they cook it and why they have this ideas, which is very pity.

What an exceptional place to eat either lunch or dinner … the food was wonderful … one of our favourites was the truffle pasta … but all the dishes were great .. loved the unique vegetable dishes… the bread was made in house as was the pasta & was excellent… and the service was lovely … we had 3 meals there and the family owned run business was of a very high quality … all the meals are made from fresh produced from farm to plate … highly recommended to any visitor to this lovely town…

This was a recommendation from our AirBnB host (MariaGiovanna) - wow!!!! amazing! We had planned to have pizza, but they only cook pizza in the evenings. So, we ate from the menu. The olive oil was so full of taste, I asked for some more to accompany my traditional bread. We drank lovely, chilled house white wine to accompany our tempura courgette flowers - divine! I ate the fat spaghetti. Tasty! We were given a free dessert too - a delicious, sweet, cream pastry. Our service was very professional, helpful and very friendly. The young lady (with the cool glasses) was excellent. We are travellers and friendly, engaging, happy service makes us feel special. Your English is amazing. I loved your 10Kg traditional bread!! This is our highlight of Altamura!

In the heart of the city of Altamura, Tre Archi is a restaurant and pizzeria deeply rooted in Apulian culinary traditions, showcasing the essence of the Murgia region. It's a culinary destination that takes care of Altamura's cultural heritage and Apulian traditions, emphasizing seasonality and locally ingredients. The ambiance is cozy with distinct rooms and tables, ensuring a comfortable dining experience without feeling overcrowded. The cuisine in my opinion is exceptional, featuring appetizers like meat from local areas, along with pasta dishes like spaghetti with sponzale onions and oven-roasted cherry tomatoes, all complemented by speck. The dessert selection is extensive, inviting guests to indulge in a variety of sweet treats from the menu. After the meal, guests can retreat to an intimate, sophisticated room upstairs to enjoy excellent cigars and a selection of liqueurs and bitters.
Manuela L — Google review
I liked the food and the ambiance. I just don't think my pasta and glass of wine were worth 25 euros. After having eaten at other places nearby and seeing what 25 euros can buy you, this place felt pretentious. I felt it was about the looks and the money, not about making the customer feel comfortable. Things I liked: - Pretty interior - A cute way to serve a nibble before the food (on a mini tree — see photo) - Wine and pasta tasted good Things I didn't like: - The mini tree contained a single tarallo. This felt stingy. Why not make use of the other branches and offer me a couple more? - I was directly in the cold air stream of the A/C. When I told the waitress I felt cold, the A/C was turned off, and two minutes later it was turned on again. - When I finished the pasta, someone took away my plate and then I was left alone. No one asked if I wanted coffee, dessert or something else. After 20 minutes I got up and asked to pay.

Pein Assutt is a fantastic restaurant in Altamura with a charismatic owner and helpful staff. The atmosphere is homey, and the food is fresh, local, and delicious. The menu offers amazing dishes like funghi trifolati on a bed of mashed faves. Despite the upscale setting, the prices are reasonable, offering excellent value for quality food. It's highly recommended by locals and visitors alike for its spectacular cuisine and friendly service.
Everything was excellent and superb value for money. We had the traditional orrechiette con cime di rapa and a delicious rabbit dish. Very glad to have made the detour. Recommend you make a reservation as the place fills up quickly!

Porta Aurea is a welcoming eatery located just outside the walls of Altamura. The cuisine offered is both unpretentious and delicious, with portions that satisfy and an excellent price range. Instead of referring to the menu, patrons can rely on the hospitable host to provide a personalized dining experience based on their preferences. The staff is friendly and accommodating, offering suggestions and even serving some of the restaurant's specialties at no extra cost.
Good food. Unpretentious and hospitable. Don't bother with the menu, just ask the host to feed you, tell him what you're in the mood for and he will take care of it. Portions are good. Price is excellent. Make sure you ask for their housebrand liqueur.

Trattoria-Rosticceria Cenzino is a hidden treasure that offers an authentic and exceptional dining experience. Accidentally discovered, this rustic yet clean restaurant warmly welcomes guests with open arms. Instead of a menu, they use fresh, local ingredients to prepare delicious meals in a pure and genuine manner. This unpretentious establishment provides incredible value for meat lovers and offers a unique old-school experience.
Wow! Truly a hidden gem! So happy we discovered this place by accident. We walked in before dinner time, but got welcomed by this family with open arms. There is no menu to choose from, but fresh, honest and local ingredients are being prepared and served in a very pure and genuine way. No nonsense. The restaurant looks and feels rustic but clean. We recommend this place if you want to savour the pure taste of local products!

How anyone calls this a hidden gem I don’t know. Went on a couple positive reviews but got there and it was empty. Persevered. Mistake. Nobody came in the whole hour I was there. Food was below average and was like heated supermarket ready meals. All the “local appetisers” were so salty and hard to eat. Main was a plate of grilled meat which the waiter brought in through the front door, so never saw or heard it cooked. Dubious. It was very dry and again something that could be picked up at a supermarket stall. Really disappointed. Didn’t argue the over high charge as I just wanted out. Avoid, sadly.

We came at 19:35 and was alone (2 adults 3 young kids 12,8,7). They were welcoming and upfront said he is only serving local dishes and meat. He didn’t show us a menu, only when we asked after he served starters to realize the shared starters are 8 euro per person.. The starters had chinked that kids liked but he didn’t offer more, and we were shy to ask. Than main course was meat. Again, not from menu and price not clear. Two plates of meat, one with some sausages (not something the kids eat or like) and another plate with good steak. Overall experience was ok. However honest pricing should have been put out 40 euro for starters is a lot 36 euro for these two plates (shared by 5 people) is also a lot. Bill ended 94 euro for starters and two main courses. (Wine, water, cope) It was not terribly bad but We would not go back, we prefer to choose our course and honest reasonable pricing

(Translated by Google) Passing through Altamura, we thought we'd stop in this place for lunch, also to taste the famous local bread. The restaurant is a distinguished and elegant place; the placement of the wines on the shelves, positioned along the side walls of the room, is extremely spectacular. We ordered the orecchiette with cherry tomatoes, rocket and cheese; tagliolini with courgette cream and a steak. Everything was to our liking. While waiting for our order to arrive, we were then served bruschetta accompanied by some local mozzarella (the plating was truly to be admired). It is right, however, to dedicate the final note to the staff. We were served by an extremely courteous, kind, friendly and nice man (I think he was the owner) who was also able to advise us on the choice of wine. His presence enriched our stay in the restaurant and brightened up our lunch! When we pass through Altamura, we will definitely return to this wonderful restaurant!
