The Fukiji Temple, an ancient Buddhist temple nestled in a forest, boasts a stunning pagoda-style architecture from the 8th century. The temple is home to a seated Buddha and offers serene spaces for meditation. It has gained popularity as a charming inn with exceptional cuisine that elevates the experience of visitors. Despite the passage of time, it exudes an unchanging sense of tranquility that adds to its allure.
The beginning of December is the recommended period. You can enjoy momiji.

The secret is out but this little Temple with it's charming inn is simply amazing. The food is on a whole new level and the surrounding nature is serene. Definitely should be on your list when visiting Kunisaki.

(Translated by Google) You'll need to climb the stone steps from the parking lot, but be careful as there are no handrails. There are many beautiful flowers blooming on both sides. After passing through the temple gate, you pay the 500 yen entrance fee, and the head priest happened to be there so I was able to get a temple seal. The main hall on the right is currently under repair. Climbing the stone steps again brings you to a quiet, otherworldly space! You can go around to the back and enter the hall to pray. Apparently when it was first built, it was surrounded by brocade Buddhist paintings. You can learn more about this at the Oita Prefectural Museum in Usa City. It was nice to be able to pray in peace. A tourist bus arrived soon after. (Translated by Google) I visited Maki Daido. It is prohibited to take pictures of Buddhist statues, which are designated as national treasures, but you can see changes in the structure of their faces from time to time, and you can see the trends throughout history, giving you a deep sense of emotion. The large structure, delicate expression, and shape of the limbs that seem to be about to move are truly impressive. It's so close, narrow, and dark that you feel oppressed, so you can't stay long. It is not a religious facility, but more like a Buddhist statue exhibition space in a museum. Good for admiring Buddhist statues.

Nine Buddhist statues (nationally designated Important Cultural Properties) made in the late Heian period are kept in the museum, and you can sit and take your time looking at them. ・The six-faced, six-armed, six-legged Daiitoku Myoo is astride a water buffalo and sporting an angry expression. It is the largest statue in Japan, and its weight is overwhelming. ・The seated Amida Nyorai statue in the center is made of lacquered cypress wood and is over 2m tall. Due to the syncretism of Shinto and Buddhism, the original form of Hachiman was considered to be Amida Nyorai, making the faith in Amida Nyorai in Rokugo Manzan (Kunisaki Peninsula) even more special. The four heavenly kings surrounding it are also worth seeing. ・The fierce-looking Acala with flames on his back has a stern expression, but is rounded and gives off a gentle impression. The statues on the left and right, Seitaka Doji and Kongara Doji, also have peaceful expressions. Photography is prohibited so I don't have any photos, but these are Buddhist statues that you should definitely see if you come to Kunisaki. I've been here more than five times. My favorite is Daiitoku Myo-o. I also have the clear file and coaster. Nio statues are also enshrined in the main hall next to the storage museum. In the past, the main hall stood where the storage museum is now, and it is said that the Nio statues guarded the mountain gate in front of the main hall.

It's not well known, but the Kunisaki Peninsula is part of the Ryogo Volcanic Group, a peninsula formed by volcanic activity centered on Ryogo Mountain. The central lava plateau and lava dome, pyroclastic deposits radiating out from the ridges and deep valleys, create a landscape rich in scenic rock formations unique to volcanoes. It's about 5km from Fukiji Temple on Prefectural Route 655 towards Yamaga, and there is a large paved parking lot with public toilets, which is helpful. Kunisaki is a village of Rokugo Manzan faith, where "Shinbutsu Shugo", a fusion of Usa Hachiman faith and Buddhism, still remains. For this reason, many shrines and temples still exist, and you can see wonderful cultural heritages at all of them. In particular, the Maki Taido storehouse is recommended because it houses nine Buddhist statues that are designated as important cultural properties by the government. Also, behind the storage facility towards the old main hall is the trailhead for "Mashiroyama Denjoji Grand Viewpoint." Mashiroyama is 191m above sea level, with an elevation difference of roughly 80m from the hall and a walking distance of about 400m. The route to the peak is well maintained and mostly stairs, so it doesn't feel like mountain climbing, so leather shoes are fine as long as you don't mind getting dirty. If you climb without stopping, you'll reach the peak in about 5 minutes, and the round trip hike takes about 15 minutes. The view from the peak is refreshing and will cleanse your soul. If the weather is nice, be sure to check this out too! Nestled along the serene banks of the Nagaiwaya River, Kawanaka Fudo is a breathtaking site featuring rock-carved Buddha statues that date back to the Muromachi period. The rocks seem larger when you see them up close. If you go under the bridge and cross the stone bridge, you can worship right in front of you. Worship is only allowed one group at a time, in order. Of course, you can also view it from the bridge. There was no one there, but I walked along the river for a while. It is well maintained, so you don't have to worry about your footing. I was able to see kingfishers and butterflies. I'm sure Fudo Myo-o must be very strong, standing in the river for so long. But there was something warm about him, and it made me smile. However, the second time, it was completely the same, there was almost nothing to see, and the bonnet buses don't run on weekdays, so I only spent about 15 minutes inside the museum. There were hardly any tourists around. The parking lot was large and cost 400 yen. Soba noodle shop
The 100% buckwheat soba noodle restaurant, Ets, offers a delectable menu featuring Duck Seiro and dashimaki egg. Their thin and chewy soba noodles provide a smooth dining experience. For dessert, their recommended option is sobagaki, which can be enjoyed with two types of soy sauce - one infused with wasabi and the other slightly sweetened with soybean flour. The establishment provides counter seats as well as tatami mats at the back.

I came here with a Kunisaki Peninsula bus tour and ordered the Dango Soup Lunch Set (だんご汁定食). On Hobonichi Techno planner page on 47 prefectures' noodles to try, Dango Soup was listed, so I was excited to try it. The lunch set was much more generous than I expected and the price was amazing. It has a local a taste that is hard to find, I heard our guide tell another tour member. Right after I took this picture and started eating, the staff came by offering pickled plum, which I did not capture in the picture. It is right across from Fuki-ji, a small temple housing a wooden figure of Amitabha Buddha (阿弥陀仏). There is parking across the street, so I highly recommend stopping here for lunch. I will make sure to do that again next time I visit Kunisaki!

Nestled within the charming Showa-no-machi shopping arcade, Nikuno Kanaoka is a beloved butcher shop that has become a must-visit spot for both locals and travelers alike. (*Personally) Due to the stormy weather on a weekday, there were hardly any tourists around the town of Showa and it was a lonely atmosphere, but I happened to see a shop famous for its croquettes on the signboard, so I hurried to visit. It's basically a butcher shop, not a croquette shop, so if you're looking for fried food to eat while walking, you'll be directed to the right side after entering the shop. I was confused because there were so many types, but since I was a tourist here, I asked the staff for a recommendation and chose the Wagyu Beef Croquette for 180 yen. The food is fried after you order it, so you can look forward to it. They wrote a number on my receipt and told me to wait in a tent in front of the store, which was a good thing since it was raining heavily that day. A few minutes later, freshly fried croquettes were brought to the tent from the shop. First, a bite. Yummy! ! It was hot and melty, like a cream croquette, and had the perfect balance of sweetness, saltiness, and pepper. However, to be honest, one of my impressions is that there is no need to use Wagyu beef croquettes because the croquettes themselves are delicious in the first place, so I thought normal was sufficient. They also have unusual croquettes that I would like to try again. I saw several locals buying meat while waiting for the croquettes to be fried, which made me think that this shop is loved by the locals.
