Taikodani Inari-jinja Shrine is a significant Inari shrine in Japan, known for its picturesque views and iconic red torii gates. It is one of the five great Inari shrines dedicated to the harvest god, Tsuwano Oinarisan. The shrine was built in 1773 after the deity's spirit was invited from Fushimi Inari Shrine in Kyoto.
This location is undoubtedly a standout, ranking among the most memorable spots encountered in Japan. While no monks were sighted during the visit, the shrine remains an active place of worship, suggesting their presence. The site is particularly striking due to its impressive column of Tori gates, culminating in the largest one the reviewer has ever seen, which guards the entrance to both the shrine and the town. Admission and parking are complimentary, with souvenirs available for purchase to support the shrine's upkeep. This is undeniably a destination worth exploring.
Dhruv K — Google review
Always love the walk up the mid hills to the temple as it is a good workout and it gives a breathtaking view as well. The temple is nicely done up and is quite huge.
Jerry T — Google review
Wonderful shintoist temple with a path going up from the town similar to the Kyoto Inari temple. From there, you can also climb to the castle ruins in about 30 minutes or go up with the chair lift, where you will have an amazing view of the tsuwano city and its valley!
Andrea — Google review
Definitely worth the trip up the mountains for this. One of the most sacred and beautiful shrines in Japan, and definitely worth a visit if you want to avoid the overcrowded touristy places!
Amos C — Google review
I absolutely loved this place. Amongst one of my most memorable places in Japan. I didn’t see any monks during my visit, but it was a working Shrine and I have no doubt they’re there. There is a column of Tori gates as well, plus the biggest Tori gate I’ve ever seen guarding the entrance to the town and Shrine. Admission and parking is free, but souvenir’s are offered for sale to support the Shrine. Definitely worth a visit!

A small Japanese Shrine located at mid-levels. Not many tourists and it is easy to find. Beautiful old Japanese architecture. There is a great view outside the Shrine. The drive along and the stay there will be refreshing.
Benny C — Google review
(visits 1) Parking was free. No English here. This place is not really meant for foreign tourists. It's a shrine more than tourist attraction. I was here for the nearby castle and this is where the parking was. I of course went to check out the shrine. It was beautiful. The view was beautiful. But I felt rather out of place as I realized this very much more a shrine shrine rather than a tourist shrine. I quickly left to go find the castle.
R D — Google review
The shrine is the highlight of Tsuwano town especially if you know where to find the rear entrance. Taikodani Inari-jinja shrine has a big impact on the town of Tsuwano. One of the roads down into the town has an impressive big red gate as if the hole town is part of the shrine precinct. You can see the shrine from most place in the town overlooking the valley. It was built to protect the castle that no longer stands. The shrine has resulted in the popularity of deep fried tofu skin noodles and the same stuffed with rice, which are likewise named after the fox, inari, that is said to like to eat them. There is a car park directly in front of the shrine allowing visitors to go to pray or purchase omamori talismen after having only climbed a short stair case, but above all, I recommend the rear entrance so that you can go through the "1000" scarlet gates, climbing 263 steps. I think that the red gates symbolise something very important. By going through 1000 of them one may perhaps attain a little more purity at the shrine at the top. The rear entrance, with all the red gates, an be accessed along the river bank near to Yasaka Jinja Shrine which is also marked on Google Maps. Unfortunately there is no car park so the designated driver will have to use the main entrance, or walk, or take a taxi from the station to Yasaka Jinja. Taikodani Inari-jinja shrine itself is very well pretty, if a little gaudy, and the views down onto the town are very pleasant. The shrine sells Hello Kitty, and fox depicting omamori amulets as well as more traditional omamori (good luck charm) variations. The fox is the messenger of the Esoteric Buddhism related god herein enshrined but offerings are often made to the fox. One can purchase the deep friend tofu skin to make as an offering at the shrine for that reason. The fox is associated with esoteric Buddhism and with sex. The fox is sometimes depicted as having a phallic tail. The shrine, and the town of Tsuwano, is 1 hour by car or steam locomotive (March to November) and two and a half hours by road bicycle along route nine from Yamaguchi, through the scenic valley of Choumonkyo and the apple production region of Tokusa. There is, incidentally another famous, and attractive multi-red gated shrine, Moto no Sumi Inari shrine on the coast in the adjacent Yamaguchi prefecture, near the corner of Honshu, and hence perhaps the name of the shrine which means "the base of the corner fox shrine" which is I think a very appropriate name and location for one of these red-gated fox shrines.

Tsuwano Castle Ruins

Historical landmark
Tsuwano Castle Ruins, dating back to the 12th century, offer a glimpse into history from its commanding position above the town. The ruins are easily accessible via a short walk from Taikodani Inari Shrine or a quick chairlift ride. The site boasts stunning views and beautiful stone walls, making it worth the visit. For those interested in history and breathtaking scenery, Tsuwano Castle Ruins is a must-see attraction in Japan.
Absolute must. If you take the china trail you can make it a nice circular walk and you'll see the massive cypress. It's actually a proper walk though, felt more than the signs were telling me. The temple at the North end was under going restoration at the time of writing, but the tree made it worth it. Full circular walk was about two to three hours

We were so happy to ride a chair lift 🛗 💺 the view from the castle top 🏯 was amazing.
Hardany P — Google review
After the amazing shrine I thought the old castle ruins would be a bit boring but I was wrong. Amazing views and well preserved walls. We walked up - not difficult but there is a chair lift as well.
Team F — Google review
If you've seen castle ruins, you'll have a rough idea of what to expect, but the setting and scale really set this one apart. Large compound and nowhere on the premises has a bad view. I recommend paying for the chairlift unless you really want the exercise and have lots of time to spend.

(Translated by Google) I visited this spot as part of a tour of Japan's 100 famous castles. 🏯 The stamp is available at the lift station. The lift fare is 700 yen round trip. There are no vending machines once you reach the top of the lift, so I recommend buying a drink at the lift station. The castle ruins are currently undergoing maintenance work, so a temporary path to the castle has been installed, making the walk easier. However!! I ended up drenched in sweat, and it was incredibly hard. 💦 When I arrived at Sanjukkendai, a train was passing by, making it feel like a diorama. 🚃✨ The view of the castle town and Mt. Aono was also spectacular.

Tsuwano Catholic Church is a charming example of Western Gothic architecture in the town. The building is a registered tangible cultural property and features a beautiful exterior, with an interior design that reflects Christianity. What makes it unique is the use of tatami mats instead of chairs. Visitors can also explore a mini museum showcasing photographs and religious articles related to the history of Catholicism in Japan. Additionally, there's a playground for kids outside and an opportunity to purchase religious items at affordable prices.
Little Church that sits in Tsuwano. 20 minutes walk from the Chapel and the morning mass is at the Convent a few streets down. People need to know what happened here. What Christians went through to practice freely.

A nice little church in the heart of the small town. Beautiful glass stain windows.

If you"re a Catholic like me and you happened to pass by Tsuwano or visited Tsuwano,Japan , there is a solemn Catholic ⛪ church there. Please visit the church and feel the peace and holiness while praying for your devotion. Outside is a playground for kids and a mini museum where you can see photograps and some religious articles about catholicism history in Japan. You can also buy religious items like rosary, pamplets saints figurine, bracelets in a very cheap price . Outside the church you will surely love to watch Koi 's (japanese colorful fish) swimming in a very clean water canal . They are really wonderful , colorful and big different kind of fishes.

The Anno Art Museum, known for its exquisite collection of paintings by Mr. Yasuno, is a popular destination in Tsuwano. Aside from showcasing the beautiful artworks, the museum also features a replica of a classroom from that era, providing visitors with a nostalgic experience. The museum boasts an extensive selection of books and paintings dedicated to Mr. Yasuno, attracting art enthusiasts who are always on the lookout for something new.

Museum with the works of the late Anno. There is a planetarium, but the seats were too painful to lie back on.

(Translated by Google) Right in front of Tsuwano station. The building with white walls that looks like a sake brewery is impressive. The symbol mark with an “a” design is cute. Admission fee is 800 yen. There seem to be various discount services available, so it's a good idea to check them out in advance. The first exhibition room was filled with works with the themes of ``songs,'' ``flowers,'' and ``travels,'' with a particularly rich selection of ``songs.'' I had a strong image of Ryotaro Shiba's ``Going on the Highway'', but there were a lot of different works, and the one in the second exhibition room with a theme of mathematics and arithmetic was also interesting. Their styles varied, and some of their works seemed to be influenced by Escher. It's a bit disappointing that the museum shop doesn't have postcards of the works on display. The flower series of one-stroke notes is a collection of four types of notepaper for each season, and it seemed easy to use, so I bought one as a souvenir. Admission fees must be paid in cash, but you can use credit cards at the museum shop.

(Translated by Google) Visited on August 21, 2024. I would like to visit again when some sort of special exhibition is held! This museum has a deep and unfathomable charm that you won't be able to leave once you visit. First, focus on looking at Mr. Yasuno's work and reading his explanations! After that, while watching Mr. Yasuno's 16-17 minute introductory video produced by NHK Educational, read ``Mitsumasa Yasuno's Record 1'' and ``Mitsumasa Yasuno's Record 2'' on the table. If you do so, I think that the works that Mr. Yasuno drew, his thoughts on each work that are written in the explanatory text, and his thoughts on this museum will become more deeply embedded in your heart. It was Mr. Yasuno's own wish when this museum was created, and it has a school-like structure, and in the library, you can carefully read his books and picture books. You will be able to remember the excitement once again as you wonder, ``Is this the work that was published in this book?'' No matter how many times I watched the video, I never got tired of it, and I watched it three times and spent almost three hours watching it. Perhaps because it is a municipal facility, the staff were very courteous when dealing with visitors. I also appreciated that if you use the parking lot in front of the station before coming to the museum, the parking fee is free. The staff's explanations were very thorough and helpful. I want to visit again and again and learn more about Mr. Yasuno. I felt that not only Mr. Yasuno himself but also the museum itself was an important treasure and asset of Tsuwano Town. Highly recommended for those who like paintings and visiting museums! The location is good as it is right next to the station. This is an art museum that we hope will continue to be visited and loved by as many people as possible.

The planetarium is open at 12:00, 13:00, 14:00, and 15:00, and lasts about 35 minutes. You must make a reservation at the reception desk to use the planetarium. I was wondering why there was a planetarium in an art museum, but I heard from Mr. Yasuno that art and science are inseparable, and that he wanted everyone to understand the importance of imagination. The building's beautiful exterior blends in with the Tsuwano cityscape, and the interior has a warm, nostalgic feel. It was worth the long trip. In addition to picture books, the museum collection includes a wide variety of illustrations for serialized works, as well as works for both adults and children. The museum shop is also well worth a visit; you'll be spoiled for choice. Anno is a unique artist, gentle and beautiful, never overbearing, yet with a hint of mischief. Hori Gardens, located in Tsuwano, is a historic site featuring the former residence of Hori Tojuro, known as the 'Mining King of Western Honshu.' The 6.5-hectare grounds encompass gardens from different periods, including the Edo and Meiji periods. The Rakuzan-so reception hall boasts a picturesque pond-centered garden with waterfalls and stone lanterns set against a rocky mountain backdrop.
One of the most beautifully relaxing places I visited. You can lay down on the tatami in a room facing a splendid garden. When we visited it was rain lightly and the sound of water drops on the leaves gave a poetic touch to the lovely view.

Beautiful and quite place. It is a bit far away from the town center, only recommended for travelers with car or a passion for cycling (a bit of uphill), but if you want to just stroll around a beautiful old mansion, with perfect garden and orchestrated view, I can highly recommend. The changing of the leafs in the fall and the light up is also beautiful. (only 4 stars, because of the bad access, not enough buses/day)

The garden is comprised of four areas: the front garden of the main house, the detached Rakuzanso Villa and its garden, Rakuzanen, the Warakuen Garden on the opposite bank, and the exterior garden of the former Hatasako Hospital. The most impressive feature was the strolling pond garden in Rakuzanen. The stone lanterns, waterfall rock formations, and swimming koi carp in the shade are picturesque, creating a timeless, cleansing tranquility. The view from the veranda is like a framed painting. The space, filled only with the sounds of the wind and water, naturally invites you to take a deep breath. The brewery is known for its "Hatsujin" sake and offers a warm and elegant store with a wide frontage where visitors can enjoy sampling their refreshing and gentle sake brewed with soft water. Visitors have the opportunity to chat knowledgeably with the shopkeeper while tasting sake.
Great place to buy some unique high grade sake! Nice old lady let us taste some and we were so happy with our choice! We got the most expensive one, which was around ¥3700. It’s mild yet strong, just perfect to my liking. Highly recommend!

(Translated by Google) A sake brewery located on Honmachi Street in the center of Tsuwano. The main brand is "Shatsujin". I sampled several types. Among them, Junmai Ginjo has the umami and sweetness of rice, but also has a refreshing fruity taste, which I felt had a good balance. This is definitely the type of sake that was selected for the Delicious Sake Award in a Wine Glass. Junmai Daiginjo is even more drinkable, which is dangerous in a sense. What was unusual was that there was alcohol in a pouch. This is also an ant in the sense of not letting it come into contact with air. However, it was more expensive than the bottle... I purchased 300ml of Junmai Ginjo. Credit cards are accepted. Tsuwano Japan Heritage Centre is a must-visit destination in Tsuwano, often referred to as 'Little Kyoto.' The center offers detailed explanations about the town's history and cultural significance. Visitors can explore the exhibits with the help of audio guides and knowledgeable staff. The center also provides English pamphlets for international visitors. Additionally, it houses a collection of 100 paintings depicting Tsuwano, adding to its allure as a cultural hub.
I had such a wonderful time visiting this small museum! The woman that helped me was so happy to share so much wonderful information about this wonderful town! I am so happy that I came to visit this place. The two highlights about this place that stood out to me were the paintings of the town from history along with their photos of it today. I also liked the costumes of the town's Heron Dance Festival. I had a wonderful time!

The white walls feature a beautiful black namako wall pattern, and even from the outside, the facility exudes respect for history and culture. Outside the building, there's a face-out panel of the "Sagimai" (heron dance) and a replica of the "One Hundred Views of Tsuwano," depicting the Tsuwano domain at the end of the Edo period, making the entire town feel like a living historical resource. While I didn't go inside, I heard it can also be used as a free rest area, so it seems like a good place to take a break during sightseeing. As a base connecting Tsuwano's past and present, I'd definitely like to take a look inside the center the next time I visit. The Mori Ogai Memorial Museum is located next to the old residence of Tsuwano, where the renowned Meiji-period literary figure spent his childhood. The museum showcases a collection of Mori Ogai's personal belongings and handwritten drafts. It also hosts events like memorial seminars and forums on significant dates related to Mori Ogai. Visitors can explore both the modern memorial hall and Ogai's former residence, gaining insight into his life from birth to death.
(Translated by Google) It wasn't until I came to Tsuwano that I learned that Mori Ogai was from here. Since I moved to Tokyo as a child, I have never returned, so perhaps people don't have that impression. When I entered here, I could feel his presence as I saw his multifaceted life displayed in chronological order. The story of Ogai's career as a translator, doctor, and great writer is carefully summarized, and the book quietly talks about Ogai's inner life and the social situation at the time. The letters, personal belongings, and manuscripts on display in the museum are valuable materials that are rarely seen, each with their own weight and helping us to understand his humanity more deeply. The exhibition explanations are clear and designed so that even those who are not familiar with literature can appreciate the charm of Ogai. The calm lighting and spatial composition of the museum naturally guide visitors' eyes toward the exhibits, allowing them to experience the tranquil flow of time. I'm not an educated person, but I only knew Mori Ogai as a writer, and I learned that he was a man of tremendous talent, including the fact that he was a doctor. However, I learned that the Mori family was a product of Spartan-style education, based on the family's desire for restoration and prosperity, which made me think about many things. The fact that Mori Ogai never visited Tsuwano after traveling at the age of 10 suggests that he had mixed feelings about Tsuwano, including the fact that his last words were "Iwami-jin." . I think it was a good museum, including some very interesting and modern buildings, but given that it was so deserted, the entrance fee was 600 yen (honestly, I felt it was expensive) → 200 yen to 300 yen ( I think it would be better to make it a little easier to enter (free of charge as a tourist resource to attract more people to visit Tsuwano), and more people would be able to enter. (Translated by Google) I ordered the Uzume set and the Fukigo rice set. The stews were also well seasoned and delicious. However, the local dish, Uzume, was a little strange. The taste of wasabi chazuke. It contained finely chopped kamaboko and tofu, but there were no herbs like seri or honeysuckle. And the customer service is terrible. A chubby old man would only say, ``Please take an empty seat.'' It was empty, but since it was around 12:00, I asked if I could sit in the tatami room, but they only said, "Please take an available seat." And when it was time to order, I was surprised to find myself casually placing my chopsticks and towels down and banging the tray on the table. Maybe he was sick or something else, but I thought he was a person who shouldn't be shown publicly when doing business with customers. After that, a foreign tourist came and I was wondering what to do without being asked if he was welcome. It seemed like he didn't understand Japanese, so he held up his index finger and gestured that he was alone, but I was surprised when he repeated "Please take the available seat" about three times like a parrot. There were several other restaurants where you could eat local cuisine. I think it doesn't have to be here. I thought it was interesting that there was a river inside the store and it was used as a fish tank, but I didn't want to pay for very bad customer service. It had a lot of bones and was difficult to eat, but it was a valuable experience. There were two choices for eel-related rice on the menu: eel set meal and eel ju, and there was no grade for each such as pine, chiku, and plum. I asked for eel jus, but both the meat and skin of the eel were hard and it wasn't very tasty. However, I couldn't find any indication of the country of origin on the menu. Also, although the sauce is delicious, it's so thick that it collects in the corners of the box, so I think it's a little too much. Unaju is an ungraded choice, but it's cheap at 2,250 yen, so I gave it this rating. A souvenir shop and restaurant, in the heart of the old town of Tsuwano. The building is itself more than 100 years old. They have a small cafe where the menu has a lot of pictures, and they also have a detailed ENGLISH explanation on the local cuisine Uzumemeshi. Both the cafe and the lunch is good, and one can eat or drink while looking out at the Registered Cultural Property Japanese Garden

The coffee jelly was firm and had a strong coffee flavor, allowing me to enjoy both the bitter and sour notes. It went perfectly with the fresh cream and syrup! The syrup was in a separate container, so I was able to adjust the sweetness to my liking. Whether you have a sweet tooth or prefer it bitter, this cafe is delicious for both. The staff were also very friendly and even asked me, "Where are you from?" There are many tourist attractions nearby, and right in front of me was a church that's a popular tourist spot, as well as a canal filled with carp. Soba noodle shop
Chishanoki is a soba restaurant located near Tsuwano Station, offering delicious juwari soba noodles made solely from buckwheat. The menu features handmade dishes such as konyaku sashimi and a special vegan option. The owner grows chestnuts used in the dishes, providing a taste unique to Tsuwano. The seasonal menu is bilingual and provides excellent descriptions of the offerings.
A wonderful local treasure. Apparently in addition to being a Soba shop, this place doubles as a Chestnut Cafe. Lots of Vegetarian/Vegan options and Souvenirs and English descriptions of the available options. The owner sources all of his ingredients locally and even uses local sea salt and water in order to get extra nutrients into his dishes. I had the Chestnut icecream and his specially made Konyaku (apparently he uses a traditional method that gives it a special texture and prevents it from developing a smell). Highly recommend to any travelers who need a place to stop for a light meal, local delicacies, or afternoon stop.

(Translated by Google) There aren't many lunch options in downtown Tsuwano. Maybe there is no demand for it because you can do sightseeing in about half a day. I found this store under such circumstances. This is a shop that sells Juwari Soba and sweets made with chestnuts. Inside the store, various posters and explanations are pasted everywhere. Since the chestnut rice was only available until November, I ordered a set of juwari zaru soba and fried rice balls. The tea is legume tea, which is often found in this region. The store is run by an old lady. A little while after I placed my order, I came back to check on it again, which was a courtesy. Zaru soba comes with two pieces of sashimi konnyaku. This konnyaku also seems to be homemade, and unlike regular konnyaku, it contains air bubbles. It has no smell or harsh taste, and can be eaten as sashimi with ponzu sauce. Juwari soba has a slightly greenish color and tastes sweet even when eaten as is without dipping sauce. It's a pity that they don't do large servings. There are two grilled rice balls (I forgot to take a photo!) that are crispy grilled on one side. One was seasoned with sesame salt, and the other was miso, but I was surprised to find that it was wasabi miso. Come to think of it, wasabi is also a specialty. I also bought a chestnut yokan as a souvenir. This yokan is made only with chestnuts, string kanten, and sugar, without using azuki beans. It's a bit pricey, but it looked interesting so I bought it. Other stores also sold items wrapped in bamboo skin, but I decided to use a simple paper box packaging. I was supposed to be able to use a credit card, but the terminal was malfunctioning, so I paid in cash. Artigiano is an Italian restaurant located in Tonomachi of Tsuwano, owned by a young couple with two kids. The restaurant offers gluten-free options and has gained popularity for its delicious Italian dishes. It was opened in 2010 and has become a new charm in the area. The cozy family-owned restaurant serves delectable pizzas and pasta, with generous portions that are sure to satisfy your cravings.
Easily one of the finest Italian dining experiences I have ever had in my entire life, and superior to every single restaurant I ate at in Rome last year. Each dish was absolute perfection, a masterclass in proper Italian cuisine, while also adding Japanese flair to some dishes. The freshest ingredients, the finest presentations. They have an omakase course menu for dinners that would have a Michelin star if the lazy bums at Michelin ever managed to get out here. It is worth traveling all the way to the Japanese hinterlands solely to eat here.

A family owned restaurant that has been renovated from nothing to a lovely little Italien restaurant. The owners (a young couple with two adorable kids) were lovely. I have tried some Italien attempts in Japan and they have been horrible experiences to put it mildly. Artigiano is none of that. The tagliatelle was perfectly alienate with a good amount of fresh vegetables that had been lightly boiled. Fantastic. The pizza had an amazing dough, succulent, rich and moist. No hard edges. Made in a wood fired Owen as I understood. The mozzarella was good and the tomato sauce was made from scratch and amazing. As a swede I'm used to too much salt, but I didn't mind here (not because it was salty, because it wasn't), because the taste was so good! It's worth talking the steam locomotive for two hours just to enjoy this beautiful and nice little restaurant in the middle of the mountains!

I had a lunch and a business dinner in this restaurant, and it was superb both times. The pasta was very good, but my favorite is the pizza they serve. The pizza here is not just delicious, but finally, a real size pizza (compared to the mini-pizza popular in Japan). According to my Italy-traveled friend, this place can be compared to restaurants in Italy, but I did appreciate the small Japanese infusion, like Shirasu on pasta. It compliments the Italian roots with a dash of Japaneseness.

They don't need this review but I am going to write it anyways. If you are in the small town of Tsuwano or on your way to Hagi you definitely need to stop here. We were lucky to grab a table for two and enjoy their lunch special of pasta or pizza. We originally planned to stop only for coffee, but were intrigued once we noticed a gluten free cake option. We got a gamberetti white pizza with an appetizer and a pink sauce prawn pasta (gluten free). Our server was kind enough to communicate that they could offer rice noodles in lieu of pasta. She went above and beyond to make sure all in our party felt safe to dine here. It appears they have a brick oven for the pizza. Their dough is soft, pillowy, but still offers a satisfying chew. Leoparding on the crust lent well to the rich mozzarella and refreshing taste of shrimp. Their pasta sauce was rich and unctuous without overpowering the sweetness of the prawns in the dish. We finished with cafe lattes and a gluten free chocolate cake. Both left a satisfying finish to the meal.

The service is very friendly, especially when you see parents with young babies, the chefs and mothers-in-law will pay special attention to them, giving them an indescribable sense of intimacy. Mimatsu

Syokudo and Teishoku restaurant
Mimatsu Shokudo is a historic soba diner that dates back to 1931, making it the oldest in Tsuwano. One of its specialties is the kuro inarizushi, a unique dish featuring dark fried tofu-covered rice. Despite its unusual appearance, this black inari sushi offers a surprisingly delicious and refreshing taste with just the right balance of sweetness.

As you walk, you will find the restaurant ``Mimatsu Shokudo,'' which is famous for ``black inari sushi.'' Business hours are from 10:00 to 17:00, closed on Wednesdays (open on the 1st of every month and holidays). Although the inside of the store is not very large, there are many customers as it is a popular store for worshipers of Inari Shrine. On this day, I stopped by to buy some Inari sushi to take home, but the restaurant was full and there was a line of customers waiting. This line is a mix of both eat-in customers and Inari Sushi take-out customers, so if you are ordering take-out, please let the staff know that you are ordering take-out. Take-out customers are treated separately, so you can smoothly pay the bill. If you wait with other eat-in customers, you will waste a lot of time. Now, the taste of the famous "Black Inari Sushi" is... Fried tofu and vinegared rice soaked in the flavor of concentrated soy sauce... Vinegared rice... The taste of fried tofu is so strong that I don't like vinegared rice. I don't know what it tastes like. Awesome secret sauce! Be sure to check it out when visiting Inari Shrine! Pino Rosso

Italian restaurant
Pizza restaurant
Nestled conveniently across from the post office on the main tourist road leading to the station, Pino Rosso is a charming Italian restaurant that has been delighting diners for over 20 years. Known for its authentic Italian cuisine, this family-run gem serves up an array of mouthwatering appetizers, pizzas, pastas, and delectable pastries. The menu features daily lunch specials that include assorted appetizers alongside your choice of pizza or pasta and a drink—perfect for those looking to savor a delightful meal.
I am an Italian who judges Italian food with the severity of a Spanish Inquisitor, and I can say without hyperbole that Pino Rosso, one of the twin Italian-restaurant gems of Tsuwano (the other is Artigiano), is among the finest Italian restaurants in the world. In a time where I can personally attest it is difficult to get actually decent Italian food even in ROME anymore, the sumptuous fare in Pino Rosso only grows more brilliant, more powerful with every visit. These culinary sorceries exist only to break men's wills upon the wheel. A wheel of cheese and meats. It is one of the great ironies of the universe that I have to come once a year to a tiny Japanese mountain village to finally experience some outstanding Italian cuisine. But outstanding barely does it justice. The Red Pine of Pino Rosso, Kenji Akamatsu, can take a handful of ingredients an in 15 minutes prepare a feast that would blind God. If you find yourself there, I beg you to try the shrimp and cream sauce pasta, which I rate without exception as one of the 5 greatest pastas I've ever eaten in the entire world. It is a symphony. There is nothing left to say of it. It is better not to even speak of it; It will take hold of you, and you will resent it's absence. The imported prosciutto he lays upon his pizza, like a veil upon an Emperor's bride, was impossibly thin. It was a cotton candy of meat. His bruschetta is perfection, an explosion of flavor on homemade bread of the perfect consistency. His cooked pork can stop time, as the smoky complexities of the pork engage in grand rhetoric on your tongue. I could go on for hours. It is honestly worth the trip to Tsuwano just to come for this restaurant alone. You will not regret it.

I have been coming here for the last 4 annual trips and have never regretted coming. The food is so solid. The best Italian u can find outside Italy 🇮🇹, or maybe perhaps even better than a lot of true born Italian restaurants themselves. The owner chef will do omakase for us and cook us the numbers of meals without any repeat. This is a true showcase of his skills and knowledge. The lady boss is so friendly and nice, making the dining experience so wonderful. We never fail to be impressed and amazed and will keep coming back until something prevented us from supporting them. Highly recommend to everyone for sure.

The best Italian restaurant in Tsuwano! The food is just incredible! The staff are very friendly too:) I always order their daily lunch that come with the assorted appetizer, pizza or pasta and drink after dish. There are 3-4 choices each for past and pizza. This family run restaurant has been running over 20 years now and they also make breads and cakes that are very popular among the local:) I would love anyone to go there for nice lunch or dinner. Advanced reservations will be better for dinner.

I ordered Tsuwano's local dish ``Uzume Meshi Set Meal''. Uzumemeshi is a ochazuke-like dish in which chopped vegetables such as wild plants, mitsuba leaves, and carrots are buried under the rice and served with wasabi and seaweed. It was very delicious, with the rich flavor of the mitsuba leaves and wild vegetables, accented with just the right amount of stimulation from the wasabi! Compared to airports in northern Japan, the airports in Yamaguchi, Osaka, Kyoto, and Hiroshima truly stand out. Yamaguchi Airport, in particular, impressed me with its cleanliness and exceptionally polite staff. The check-in process was seamless, and passing through security took only a matter of minutes. Due to my health condition, I have to request wheelchair support and they have been the most thoughtful and kind staff I have ever come across with. On Friday, October 25, 2024, at approximately 9:30 AM, I was scheduled to board flight LJ350 from Kitakyushu, Japan, to Seoul Incheon. Around 8:00 AM, I entered the airport security checkpoint, prepared with my mobile QR code as I had completed web check-in and did not require a printed boarding pass. Upon request, I turned on my phone to show the QR code. Shockingly, without a word or any explanation, the security staff member abruptly seized my phone from my hand and placed it in the security tray. Up until that moment, I had not spoken to the staff or even made eye contact, as I was simply conversing with my companion. My phone screen was still on, raising privacy concerns, and I instinctively reached out to turn it off. The security agent's expression immediately hardened, and he attempted to snatch the phone from me with increased force. When I resisted, he used even more strength to wrest it from my hand and put it back in the tray. His colleagues, all of whom witnessed this exchange, did nothing to intervene; one even offered an apologetic smile, yet none stepped in to stop this employee’s forceful and inappropriate behavior. This individual appeared to be a male in his 40s. What authority permits you to manhandle personal belongings without consent? What right do you have to treat a traveler’s possessions with aggression and such an intimidating attitude? Frankly, the behavior was reminiscent of a Yakuza rather than an airport security officer. After 15 years of traveling to over 30 countries on more than 300 business and personal trips, this is, without a doubt, one of the most egregious incidents I have encountered. I consider this a serious act of racial discrimination, and I will not return to Kitakyushu. I attempted to send you an email regarding this matter but couldn’t find a contact address. Have you removed your email because you receive complaints like this every day? I fully consent to the public release of the footage. If there is any suspicion that I am exaggerating or misrepresenting events, feel free to review and publish the footage immediately. The small, artificial island of Kitakyushu Airport seemed like it would be a beautiful and serene place. My first impression was exactly that. But this positive sentiment was ruined by one employee’s foolish, racially discriminatory conduct, which left a negative mark on the overall impression of your country. Was the friendliness I experienced in places like Tokyo, Osaka, Sapporo, or even nearby Fukuoka simply a facade to welcome tourists? Do your other staff harbor the same prejudices as this individual? It is disappointing to witness such an unprofessional display from your staff and disheartening to realize that the training standards at your airport are this low.

Sights & Landmarks
Iwakuni Kintaikyo Airport (IWK) is a small airport located in the Iwakuni area, offering daily flights to Tokyo (Haneda) and Okinawa. The airport staff are known for their friendly and polite service, providing travelers with a great Japanese experience. The famous Kintaikyo Bridge, with its unique five-arched design, is a must-see attraction spanning the Nishiki River.
Great place to fly from. They have hot coffee and snacks. Not much if you are looking for a full meal before or after your flight. Bus will pick you up from airport and they have taxi services. English is available. Bathrooms are clean and have trashcans🤭. Piano is in there and the kids seem to like playing with it. Not much else.

Very small airport. Easy access and plenty of parking. It would be a 4 star review but you have to pay to go onto the observation deck.

I have lived here for a long time so I was here when we didn’t have an airport. It’s been so wonderful to be able to fly out of Iwakuni instead of taking a train and a bus to get to another airport. This airport is small, but it’s great. Lots of parking and parking is FREE for the first five days. Just remember to take your ticket in so you can validate it after you go through security. There is a small gift shop that sells some great local items to take away for gifts or souvenirs. The ANA staff are always very nice and very professional. The security staff are great too.

VERY SMALL AIRPORT , HARD TO GET A TAXI TO YOUR HOTEL OR DESTINATION FROM THE AIRPORT. THE POSITIVE , BEING THAT ITS A SMALL AIRPORT - Check in Progress and Security is really quick.

Costs 200 yen from Iwakuni station by bus. 800-1,000 yen by taxi. Small but clean airport. They have souvenirs shop and food court as well.

Spotless clean, but super small. No ANA lounge is a big minus.

Hagi-Iwami Airport

Airport
Regional airport
Hagi-Iwami Airport is a small airport with daily flights from Tokyo Haneda Airport, taking about 95 minutes. It's the closest airport to Hagi City, with a direct taxi service or rental car for a 70-80 minute ride. There are two daily buses to Masuda Station, offering convenient transportation. The airport features a compact layout with a souvenir shop and cafe restaurant on the second floor near the security checkpoint, providing great views of the runway.
Amazing airport. Everyone is so kind, check-in and security is all completely relaxed. Great views from the cafeteria. And not to forget the famous honey, which tastes actually really good. Especially on their cheese pizza 😆

Super small, but good cafeteria to see airplanes. :-)

(Translated by Google) It was my first time using it. When you come out to the arrival lobby, information about shared taxis will be waiting for you. I had a little time until my bus time, so I wandered around the airport. There is one shop and one restaurant in the departure lobby on the second floor. This is pretty much all there is to a very small airport. I'm worried about how they'll be able to manage with two flights a day. The bus to Masuda Station is a regular route bus, so it may be a little inconvenient for people with large luggage. Transportation ICs are available. It's close to Masuda Station, but there was quite a bit of traffic when I used it. It's best not to make too many last-minute plans.

(Translated by Google) It is one of three airports in Shimane Prefecture. Its official name is Iwami Airport, but it is commonly called Hagi, so as a token of appreciation, they also sell souvenirs from Yamaguchi Prefecture. The observation deck is right in front of the parking lot, so you can take impressive photos. It's also nice that parking is free. The restaurant offers a close-up view of the planes, making it a must-see spot for airplane enthusiasts. There are only a few flights, limited to two per day, but this makes for a relaxed atmosphere. The beautiful, crystal clear ocean stretches out right next to the airport, allowing you to enjoy nature immediately after landing, making it an attractive spot. I went there without knowing anything about it, but it was great to meet a one-month-old puppy. The airport itself is compact, and after arriving, the rental car departure and boarding procedures all went smoothly, and it was convenient not having to walk much.
