Kumano Magaibutsu is a remarkable site featuring two large Buddhist relief sculptures carved into a cliff during the late Heian or early Kamakura period. These impressive 6m and 8m figures of the Dainichi Buddha and Fudo-o-o are Japan's largest of this type. Accessible via stone stairs, which according to legend were built overnight by an ogre, reaching the carvings requires some effort but offers a rewarding experience. The 11.
The carvings in the side of a mountain are pretty amazing to look at. The stone stairs are very uneven and pretty steep, but also really cool to walk on. There is a fee (¥300) to enter. Recommend grabbing a walking stick at the ticket window. It comes in handy when coming down the uneven stones. It takes about 15-20 min to walk one way to the top.

11.5km trek around the peninsula and a nice Buddha face carved into a cliff face? Better than Mount rushmore. I don't want to rush and I want more! It's quite cool that after years of weathering the face is still looking dapper. One star off because the trek wasn't too friendly if you aren't fit, like me after eating all that ramen. Please press like if you liked this review.
Jonathan L — Google review
The upper part of the staircase is like a random stone pile up, which is a little hard to climb up. You should get a walking pole at the entrance.
Hashizaki S — Google review
The steep stone walkway is no joke! Don’t be brave and just listen to the advise and use a walking stick which is free and available from the ticket office.

Buddhas in the cliff face. A unique and stunning place, with an enjoyable walk up to the top

Showa Town is a recreated shopping street from the Showa era, displaying various history exhibits and old-fashioned shops. The town has a vintage ambiance with mom-and-pop stores that may seem touristy in terms of pricing. Though it can be uncomfortably hot during summer months, visitors can enjoy an authentic experience of old Japan while exploring the area. Additionally, there is a fun 3D animation workshop available for those interested in learning more about this unique art form.
After visiting Usa Jingu, I boarded a local bus and made my way to my next destination—Bungotakada. In Bungotakada, Oita Prefecture, there’s a nostalgic district known as the “Showa no Machi” — a lovingly restored shopping street that recreates the atmosphere of Japan in the 1950s-1970s. Lined with retro storefronts and adorned with vintage signage and architecture, the area offers visitors the unique sensation of stepping back in time. Like many rural towns across Japan, Bungotakada once faced declining populations and shuttered shops. But with nearly 70% of its old buildings still intact — a rarity in modern Japan — the city turned its “frozen-in-time” charm into a thriving tourism success. After watching the majestic bonnet bus (a 1957 Isuzu BX141 model) make its way through the streets, I stopped by the long-established butcher shop “Niku no Kanaoka” to try their famous croquettes.

We walk through Eki Street, shopping arcade that promises an authentic shopping experience in Showa era. It's only 500 meters long but filled up with many products, appliances, gadgets and toys. These shops reached golden age during the Show period in the 1950s and 60s.
Piyawat B — Google review
Showa era town? it’s just a few road with really old feeling shops and few museum. Extremely hot during the summer, not recommended to bring kids as you have to walk on the roadside. Lots of mom and pop shops, pricing wise it’s touristy
Aloysius T — Google review
A very nice place, not just a road, a whole village looks like Japan in the 60/70s. For us a very exciting visit there.

A great place to visit this era (Showa) in Japan's history. It is still in that time, but a great place to walk around and experience.

Matama Coast is a picturesque location that features a vantage point alongside the road where visitors can gaze out at a stunning natural display of vibrant hues as the sun sets over the horizon. The area is renowned for its shallow pools situated on the sandy beach below which reflect striking colors during this time. This roadside lookout offers an unparalleled opportunity to witness Mother Nature's beauty and capture breathtaking photographs of this idyllic scene.
Great view from here, you can see Honshu...gives a good sense of where you are on the map. Wish it hadn't have been so cloudy... Nice facilities, too. 2023

Nestled along the serene banks of the Nagaiwaya River, Kawanaka Fudo is a breathtaking site featuring rock-carved Buddha statues that date back to the Muromachi period. This remarkable trio, known as the Fudo Trinity, includes a towering 3.7-meter Acala flanked by two 1.7-meter companions, Kongara Doji and Seitaka Doji.
(Translated by Google) I seriously wanted to see it for a long time! ! I’m finally here! ! Kawanaka Fudo🔥 The name is cool, but it's amazing that it's still so clean in the river! Seriously amazing! ! It's so amazing that I want to say it. I finally met you. I'm satisfied. The river is also beautiful. Amazing 👏✨️ Various words are linked to the Buddha statues, including petroglyphs, faith, megalithic worship, nature worship, and Rokugo Manzan. If you like it, I recommend you to visit it at least once!

(Translated by Google) There is Tennenji Temple along the road, but this one is by far the most recommended. The view of the river is beautiful, and that alone is soothing. The rocks seem larger when you see them up close. If you go under the bridge and cross the stone bridge, you can worship right in front of you. Worship is only allowed one group at a time, in order. Of course, you can also view it from the bridge. There was no one there, but I walked along the river for a while. It is well maintained, so you don't have to worry about your footing. I was able to see kingfishers and butterflies. I'm sure Fudo Myo-o must be very strong, standing in the river for so long. But there was something warm about him, and it made me smile. There is no admission fee. Be sure to check out the statue for yourself.

(Translated by Google) Kawanakafudo, a stone cliff Buddha in the river. With its quiet appearance, you can relax. I visited on December 2nd, which was past the perfect time for autumn leaves, but I still enjoyed the autumn leaves and the riverside promenade full of fallen leaves. (From the large parking lot, you can reach Kawanakafudo via a promenade (about 100 meters) Is it difficult to break up after going on a side street? Although the road is about 300 feet wide, there is ample parking so you can easily stop by. (Translated by Google) It's a nice and quiet place. The nearby museum was also very enjoyable with an admission fee of 300 yen per adult. It was great to be able to feel the atmosphere of the festival through the video. I went close to Mumei Bridge once three years ago, but I couldn't reach it because the last difficult part was too scary😱💦 (I had too many worldly desires), so it was really nice to have a full-sized bridge exhibit and VR too. is! ️VR is a bit difficult to use, and it's a shame that older people have given up and left 😅💦 (Original)

Awashima Park is a romantic haven nestled along Koikana Road, renowned for its heart-shaped "Yui" monument symbolizing love and eternity. This enchanting park serves as a popular spot for couples to pledge their affection with padlocks, making it an ideal location for proposals. In spring, the cherry blossoms bloom beautifully, creating a picturesque backdrop—though cloudy days may hinder photography opportunities.
I cycled 108 km from Shimonoseki and found a quiet place to pitch my tent in Awashima Park. There is also a short trail that takes you to a little shrine right by the water, where you can watch the sunset. I bought some bento and beers at a supermarket on the way and had dinner there. The toilet stayed open 24 hours.

The Fukiji Temple, an ancient Buddhist temple nestled in a forest, boasts a stunning pagoda-style architecture from the 8th century. The temple is home to a seated Buddha and offers serene spaces for meditation. It has gained popularity as a charming inn with exceptional cuisine that elevates the experience of visitors. The main hall on the right is currently under repair. Climbing the stone steps again brings you to a quiet, otherworldly space! You can go around to the back and enter the hall to pray. Nine Buddhist statues (nationally designated Important Cultural Properties) made in the late Heian period are kept in the museum, and you can sit and take your time looking at them. ・The six-faced, six-armed, six-legged Daiitoku Myoo is astride a water buffalo and sporting an angry expression. It is the largest statue in Japan, and its weight is overwhelming. ・The seated Amida Nyorai statue in the center is made of lacquered cypress wood and is over 2m tall. Due to the syncretism of Shinto and Buddhism, the original form of Hachiman was considered to be Amida Nyorai, making the faith in Amida Nyorai in Rokugo Manzan (Kunisaki Peninsula) even more special. The four heavenly kings surrounding it are also worth seeing. ・The fierce-looking Acala with flames on his back has a stern expression, but is rounded and gives off a gentle impression. The statues on the left and right, Seitaka Doji and Kongara Doji, also have peaceful expressions. Photography is prohibited so I don't have any photos, but these are Buddhist statues that you should definitely see if you come to Kunisaki. I've been here more than five times. My favorite is Daiitoku Myo-o. I also have the clear file and coaster. Nio statues are also enshrined in the main hall next to the storage museum. In the past, the main hall stood where the storage museum is now, and it is said that the Nio statues guarded the mountain gate in front of the main hall. Mashiro, the largest Rokugo Manzan temple with 36 halls and one of the eight main temples of the Rokugo Manzan temple complex. However, Denjoji Temple was destroyed by fire approximately 700 years ago, and no detailed historical documents remain. The main hall houses nine Buddhist statues designated as Important Cultural Properties, including Japan's largest wooden statue of Daiitoku Myo-o riding a buffalo, and a seated statue of Amida Nyorai from the Fujiwara period. From the Heian period to the Middle Ages, the peninsula was developed into six districts: Kunawa, Tashibu, Aki, Musashi, Kunisaki, and Imi. Numerous temples associated with the Tendai sect, estimated at 65, were built in the mountains. Collectively known as Rokugo Manzan, these districts flourished, and a unique Buddhist culture flourished there. It's not well known, but the Kunisaki Peninsula is part of the Ryogo Volcanic Group, a peninsula formed by volcanic activity centered on Ryogo Mountain. The central lava plateau and lava dome, pyroclastic deposits radiating out from the ridges and deep valleys, create a landscape rich in scenic rock formations unique to volcanoes. It's about 5km from Fukiji Temple on Prefectural Route 655 towards Yamaga, and there is a large paved parking lot with public toilets, which is helpful. Kunisaki is a village of Rokugo Manzan faith, where "Shinbutsu Shugo", a fusion of Usa Hachiman faith and Buddhism, still remains. For this reason, many shrines and temples still exist, and you can see wonderful cultural heritages at all of them. In particular, the Maki Taido storehouse is recommended because it houses nine Buddhist statues that are designated as important cultural properties by the government. Also, behind the storage facility towards the old main hall is the trailhead for "Mashiroyama Denjoji Grand Viewpoint." Mashiroyama is 191m above sea level, with an elevation difference of roughly 80m from the hall and a walking distance of about 400m. The route to the peak is well maintained and mostly stairs, so it doesn't feel like mountain climbing, so leather shoes are fine as long as you don't mind getting dirty. If you climb without stopping, you'll reach the peak in about 5 minutes, and the round trip hike takes about 15 minutes. The view from the peak is refreshing and will cleanse your soul. If the weather is nice, be sure to check this out too! The Sakamoto Zenzo Museum of Art is located in the Steam Village, a hidden hot spring area at the base of Mt. The village is enveloped in steam, creating a unique atmosphere especially during winter. The museum itself is housed in a grand old private residence that has been transformed into an art space. It features exhibits of works by Zenzo Sakamoto, a local abstract painter, with special exhibitions changing every three months.

(Translated by Google) It seems that a large and splendid old private house has been renovated and turned into an art museum. Photographs of exhibits and spaces other than special exhibits are permitted. Zenzo Sakamoto is an artist from a small country. I refrain from writing about the work or the author, as each person has different feelings about it. The use of space may not be so impressive that it would be better to think of it mainly as an old folk house. There are large works on display, but their presence feels so inorganic that you could almost call them ethereal. The works displayed in the old folk houses match the old folk houses. There are also other works in the annex, so you can see different styles. To be honest... there are good and bad things about these museums, and people can either like them or dislike them. That's because if you go there just to see what's inside, you'll feel unsatisfied unless there are special exhibits. However, this museum is amazing, including the exterior space! I visit unusual museums all over the place, so I really like this museum. That's why I give it a high rating. Admission fee is 500 yen for adults. Most museums charge extra for special exhibitions. The regular price is 500 yen. It's not expensive, especially since it's municipally owned. And if there's just a little bit of caution... As it is an old private house, there are steps! Just be careful. For people who are used to barrier-free environments, it was dangerous to not be able to see your feet... (lol) Also, the lintels are low, so please be careful above your head. ✨️You can enter in a wheelchair. (Translated by Google) I went to ask a nun who was there a long time ago... I had become a different woman. You cannot receive a Goshuin stamp at the awarding office. It is strictly written in more than three languages that you are not allowed to take pictures of the awarding place, and the amulets are priced a little above the regular price. Inside was a gacha containing fortune slips for 500 yen coins. Contains gold pika stickers that have been around for a long time. The temple office is located below Kumano Magaibutsu, and the Kumano Magaibutsu (Kumano Daigongen) and Taizouji (principal image of Amida Nyorai) are each 300 yen. First, when I went here and received the Goshuin stamp, it came with a gold pika sticker. For some reason, this temple is particular about gold pika. The ``Namubutsu'' of Kumano Magaibutsu (Kumano Daigongen), which is written in the temple office, is also included in the Three Precepts of Buddhism. However, ever since the current chief priest started running the ossuary, this temple has been referred to as the ``honin.'' Fudo Myo-o and others are enshrined in Goma-do, but if you're lucky, you might be able to worship the chief priest's Goma bonfire... According to the woman, there is a gold and white snake in the Goma-do hall, but since it is not open to the public, there is no way to confirm, so we have no choice but to visit the closed Goma-do hall. The main image of the temple is a large shojokikai mask, which means Fudo-san, but it is not as popular as it used to be. I'm concerned that the talisman is unusually expensive. What I gave you in the photo is a crystal snake and amulet. The crystal snake costs 1,500 yen (same as the pink bag), and the crystal comes in a white or black bag. The amulet is 800 yen (this is academic achievement) Also available are Hikyu bracelet, Heart Sutra bracelet, and citrine (it turns yellow when processed with amethyst). For some reason, there are things that have nothing to do with Taizouji... That ``Namubutsu'' is from Beppu and Oita Betsuin (also known as ``Namubutsu no Kai'' regarding charnel houses and funerals). There it was. The main hospital also has a columbarium that looks a bit like a hut. I would like the prefecture's important cultural properties (several hanging Buddha statues) to be made public. It was once the object of worship at Kumano Shrine. The storage room for this hanging Buddha has not been opened. This is the first time since the Rokugo Manzan 1300th anniversary festival. It looks good if you make some changes.

If you climb to the top and then go down, you will come to Taizoji Temple. It may be fine to visit here first. The parking lot is not very large, so if there are a lot of tourists, you will have to wait for a parking spot. Most people climb to the top, so it may take a little time, but the stone Buddhas carved into the walls are amazing, so it is recommended to climb to the top and view them first. He does it while patting me on the back in front of me. I put a sticker on the Buddha statue to ask people to throw away bad things. At the prayer hall, Rokugo Manzan's goshuin stamps and shadows are sold, and special goshuin stamps can be obtained at the temple office below. You can also get the goshuin stamp of Saimyoji Temple, a sacred place in Buzen Saigoku, here. At the Kumano Magaibutsu Reception Center, walking sticks were lent out for free. Etiquette for watching fireflies. ① Use a flashlight to illuminate only your feet. Actually, I don't think it's good just for your feet. If possible, light from a penlight is best. For fireflies, light is an important activity that leads to reproduction. They strongly dislike light that is brighter than that, as it will affect their breeding behavior. ② Don't scare the fireflies. It's understandable that you might want to touch it or catch it because it's beautiful, but don't touch it. If humans are recognized as scary creatures by fireflies, we will no longer be able to see the beautiful fireflies. Anyway, the most important thing is the light. Please do not harass the beautiful and soothing fireflies. This festival is an event that combines Buddhism and folk beliefs, praying for good health and a good harvest in the new year. It is registered as a Japanese Heritage Site and is famous nationwide as a rare festival. ``Shujoe'' is a combination of the words ``shujoue'' and ``onie''. A correction meeting is a Buddhist event held during the New Year, and refers to a period of training to correct the mistakes of the previous year and pray for peace and happiness in the new year. Oni-e is a ritual in which demons appear and purify evil spirits. Demons in this region are not frightening beings, but have the role of guardian deities who protect and guide people. The image is that demons = Gods and Buddhas. The festival is usually held on the first Friday night in February every year. You can find out more details at the historical museum "Onikai no Sato" next door. Admission fee is 300 yen for adults. The stone pavement road stretches for about 1.6 km, and boasts one of the best preservation conditions in Japan, with paving stones about 3 m wide. The stone pavement was laid to prevent damage to the road by volcanic ash. It was mainly used for alternate attendance. Nestled along the scenic Prefectural Route 34 in Bungotakada City, Oita Prefecture, the Motomiya Magaibutsu is a captivating site that showcases the rich spiritual heritage of the Kunisaki Peninsula. This remarkable collection of rock-carved Buddhas dates back to between the late Kamakura and early Muromachi periods.
(Translated by Google) I was really surprised by the history of the Kunisaki Peninsula and the richness of the shrines and Buddhas that exist on the side of the prefectural road. It is protected from exposure to the wind and rain, and you can't help but be surprised at the high level of religiosity in this area. When I think about how many people have prayed to this Buddha and asked for help, I am overwhelmed with emotion. Motomiya Rock-Carved Buddhas are a group of rock-carved Buddhas located in the Tasome district of Bungotakada City, Oita Prefecture. Carved into the rock face next to Motomiya Hachiman Shrine, the guardian deity of Tasome, they feature half-carved figures of Acala, Jizo Bodhisattva, Jikokuten, and Tamonten. Estimated to have been created between the Kamakura and Muromachi periods, they feature the powerful war gods Jikokuten and Tamonten. While some areas have weathered, the expressions and forms of each statue offer insight into the religious practices of the time. They blend seamlessly into the surrounding landscape and have been protected by the local people since ancient times. Nestled in the scenic beauty of Japan, Mt. Iou Mudo-ji Temple is a serene spot that captivates visitors with its rich history and stunning surroundings. This modest temple, dedicated to Fudo Myoo, boasts a breathtaking backdrop known as Mudoji Yama, which has earned recognition as a national scenic site. Revered since the Edo period for its unique charm and picturesque views, it offers more than just trekking; it's an experience steeped in spiritual training.

The local history museum, Onie no sato History museum, offers a guided tour showcasing important cultural landmarks in the area. Visitors are taken to Tennenji and Kawanaka Fudo before witnessing the renowned Mumyo Bridge. The museum also showcases Mt. There is a simple museum about the customs of Tennen-ji and Shujo Onie (Rokugo Manzan), as well as a restaurant (they serve udon and soba, and the staff are very friendly). Museum entrance tickets can also be purchased by inquiring at the restaurant counter. As far as I know, this is the only place that carries souvenirs related to the Kunisaki Peninsula. This is an unusual thing I learned while visiting other regions. Is it because Tennenji's Oni mask is an active duty one? It doesn't seem to be on display anywhere else (even a replica) other than here. Normally, it is open until late lunch, but on the day of Shujo Oni, the restaurant seems to be open until the end of the Buddhist service. Nestled near Matama, Shunko-ji Temple is a hidden gem that offers visitors a warm and welcoming experience. Even if you arrive late, the temple staff, including the chief priest's family, are eager to assist and share their knowledge about this serene place. Guests can purchase limited edition goshuin stamps while enjoying thoughtful conversations with the personable priest. The atmosphere is both solemn and inviting, making it an ideal spot for reflection.

(Translated by Google) I was surprised to find such a wonderful stone Buddha statue right next to the national highway. I was also impressed by how well it was preserved. The trailhead was on the side of the national highway, and I was wondering what to do with my car, but I found a park parking lot about 100 meters away, so I walked there. It has probably been exposed to the wind and rain for many years, so it has deteriorated somewhat, but the town probably built a rain shelter to prevent further deterioration. On the map, it looks like it's along the national highway, but it's actually quite high up the stone steps on the side of the national highway. After about 5 minutes of climbing up what looks like a mountain path on the side of the national highway, you'll reach a straight stone staircase leading to the Magaibutsu statue, and it's quite steep from there. The stone steps are narrow and there is only a handrail on one side, so if you come from the opposite direction, you will be stuck. Although the stone cliff Buddha is exposed, it is well preserved and can be identified as a stone Buddha. I'm not sure if it's photogenic because it's dark around here, but I think it's worth a visit if you like stone Buddhas. Koyasugawara Kannon Statue is renowned as a protector of childbirth and safe delivery. The shrine features a natural stone resembling a woman in the river below, believed to bestow blessings for children if taken home. Visitors from distant places come to pray and collect these stones. However, the riverbed is filled with numerous rocks, making it perilous. It's advisable to wear appropriate footwear like sneakers.
(Translated by Google) I visited on Children's Day, May 5, 2025, near the ovulation date based on my basal body temperature. I had a miscarriage a year ago. I was worried about whether I would be able to get pregnant normally, so I had been wanting to come here for a long time and finally got to visit since I had business in Aso. I have a boy and a girl on top, so I don't care about the gender and took home both the red and black stones and displayed them on the altar. A week after that, I got a very faint positive result from an overseas early pregnancy test, which was a very early start, and 10 days later, a reversal phenomenon occurred with a Japanese test, and I was able to confirm the gestational sac and heartbeat. I still pray to the stone every day for the baby to grow up safely. I was really surprised that I got pregnant so soon after visiting😌If the baby is born safely, I would like to return the stone with my whole family☺️ (Original)

28Art Museum of Nature and Human Non-Homogeneity

Art museum
The Art Museum of Nature and Human Non-Homogeneity consists of three exhibition rooms that offer a unique and stimulating experience for visitors. The museum not only engages the senses of perception but also explores other sensory dimensions. Despite being influenced by weather conditions, this museum provides an opportunity to appreciate the diverse nature and people it showcases. Additionally, during new moon and full moon periods, two additional programs are available, making the visit even more worthwhile.
(Translated by Google) Visited on a weekday in July. Inside, there are exhibitions that take up three different rooms, and the price is 700 yen, which may be a bit expensive. The room you see most often is an exhibition that uses sunlight, so I don't think it will look as pretty unless the sun is out. I also thought that timing is important because the view changes depending on how the sun sets. Perhaps because there were no other customers when I visited, the staff were very kind, taking photos for me and explaining each room to me. Although it's a very nice museum, there aren't many reviews and there aren't many customers, probably because it's not in a good location. I would like to visit again on a different day when the sun sets. (Translated by Google) 700 yen for adults, 300 yen for children (A reasonable price for this kind of museum) As a museum, there are many things to consider, but if you think of it as art, including design and everything else, it makes sense. First of all, if you like museums, you will definitely enjoy this place to a certain extent. If you like design and art, I think you will be very satisfied. However, if you just come here for some reason, you may be a little disappointed. It's a little hard to describe because people's sensibilities are so varied... The location of Nagasakibana, nature, weather, space, the design and art there...all of these things come together to create an expression, human creativity. An irregular story created by the heterogeneity of nature. Honestly, I would have been a little dissatisfied if I had only used my own sensibilities. It was only because of the explanation that I was able to be moved by everything. When I hear about museums and art, I imagine a certain number of works and artists. Looking at the many works displayed in the space, I was immersed in the sensibilities there... However, here, the three rooms are divided into different themes, and one company has created this museum as a team. It almost feels like a model room. It's a mix of design and the artistry that is there. So, I definitely recommend getting an explanation, and I think it's fun to get in touch with the humanity of the staff there. They were very friendly 👏✨ (Original)

I recommend listening to the explanation from the receptionist. Room of the sun and moon. A fantastic world created by light and smoke shining from the ceiling. 🌫️☀️ forest room The mysterious animation movement makes sense after listening to the explanation. The sea room was the same. Everyone has a different way of looking at it, so I was struck by how philosophical and deep this work, including the naming of the museum, is, which sets it apart from passive art. 🤔✨✨ Finally, I was told about the shrine in the sea cave that was used in the video, and I was once again impressed. 💖 Kishimojin is feared by the bottomless bosom of Oita Prefecture! ! is. 😆💕💕

There are three rooms: the Sun and Moon Room, the Sea Room, and the Forest Room. I was able to look around slowly, and the contents of the exhibition were more satisfying than I expected! When I left at the end, the woman at the reception gathered the other groups and let us watch a video in the Forest Room! I think the "Sun and Moon Room" often appears on Instagram and TikTok, but personally I would like you to go and enjoy watching the last video. I was surprised by the sensation of being sucked in and the amazing video technology. The female receptionist? guide? was very helpful. In the Sun and Moon Room, she told me the recommended viewing angle and how to take pictures, and the explanation was easy to understand!
