it was a very cloudy and rainy day. still i had the chance to be able to see around. weather changes quickly. clouds go fast. long way, great view, one of a time experience. Makinoto Trailhead 27.10.2024
Boburkhon K — Google review
Recommended climb. It is slightly shorter to start at Makinoto Pass. The scenery along the way is grand. The trail is well signposted and there is a steady stream of hikers both ways. The entire hike took us about 5 hours.
Li K — Google review
There is a hiking trail from the parking lot at Akagawa Onsen (赤川温泉) and that only takes about 2.5hours to ascend to the peak of Mt Kuju. This trail is steep and technical, at parts requiring scrambling on boulders. This trail is flanked by deciduous trees giving it a spooky forest vibe in Winter when I hiked, but it would be absolutely stunning in spring if you can handle the pollen!
W M — Google review
Beautiful and long hike. I would recommend starting early, the parking lot at the bottom fills up quickly, so you’ll have to park along the roadside. And the blueberry soft cream at the base is worth the hike!
Audrey M — Google review
An awesome hike. It takes about 8 hours to cover a good numbers of peaks in the Kuju Mountains.

Nadakade hike was fun with amazing views. The place is awesome in summer with beauty everywhere you look.
R K — Google review
I went there for a hike, personally i love the hiking trail. Its pretty easy for an amateur hikers like me, and i reached the highest peak called Nakadake. There are a lot of various beautiful scenery alongside the hiking trail. Especially there is a small pond before reaching the peak (Miike Pond) and it was beautiful. It was a very worthy hike and would highly recommend this mountain if you want to hike.

June 2025. Hot weather, no trees in wooden pathway unless you want to walk a longer route past forest. Spacious views. Kids can run a few round while parents sit and watch if you don’t mind to be roasted under the sun. Probably nice to walk during autumn. A place for leisure walk and feel the spacious view. As u can see from pictures, can be burnt under the sun. Bring umbrella- for rain or for sun - both useful.
SiewHong P — Google review
A decent stop along the Yamanami Highway, pleasant walk along the boardwalk reminiscent of Senjogahara (albeit much smaller). Toilets on site, mostly flat and plenty of free parking.

Loved it here! Great 'short' trekking path.
S-V R — Google review
What an amazing walk we had. It was flat and easy on the wooden board. There were a few loop walks to choose from or just to return on the same way. The air was cold when we were there in early November, and we definitely needed the jacket.

Tadewara Wetlands, as known as Tadewara Marsh, is a vast wetland filled with grasslands in Aso Kuju National Park. There is free parking lots in front of Chojabaru Visitor Center (Mapcode 440 702 776*6) and Tadewara Marsh is behind this visitor center. If you are nature lover, do not miss this place. Just stop by visitor center, pick up walking – trekking map in English. For walking, there are wooden bridges for 3 main routes. Route A : It is 800 meters walking and taking 20 minutes. Route B : It is 1,500 meters walking and taking 40 minutes. Route C : It is 2,500 meters walking and taking 60 minutes. With wooden bridges, we can walk easily. Enjoy flowers and plants year-round. It does not take much time to walk, but it takes a lot of time in photos. Tedawara Marsh opens every day at 9 am – 5 pm during May – October and 9 am – 4 pm during November – April. It’s free.

These wetlands are beautiful to walk around in. The hikes are of varying difficulty and are clearly labeled on the map. Such a great view and experience.

We went during a cold winter day but it was gorgeous and very easy to walk along the boardwalk:) there are optional loops you can take to make it as long or as short as you need.

The summit is quite wide and you can take your time. If you are coming from Kumamoto, there is a trailhead sign just past Hage no Yu Onsen. About 2 hours one way. Gain altitude while looking at the huge water vapor gushing out from the hot springs. We suddenly passed a red cow on the mountain trail, and we were both surprised. There are no dangerous places, but the descent is slippery. If you drive up to the forest road at the top, it will take you an hour to walk to the top of the mountain. However, the last 800m of the forest road is not paved and is uneven dirt. Please be careful. Very beautiful flower park and well kept! They also decorate for holidays and have a lot of cute decorations. The shop also contains many omiyage that are unique. Great place even during the rain!

It is a medium size park planted with many different species of flowers. The entrance fee is ¥1300 each person, and there is no public transport to the park. It is a good place to visit if the weather is nice and the season is correct.

Visited Kuju Flower Park twice—once in early spring and again in late spring—and each time felt like stepping into a different dream. Early spring greets you with vibrant tulips, while late spring unveils a sea of nemophila and other seasonal blossoms. The scenery? Timeless. With free parking and an admission fee of ¥1,300 for adults and ¥500 for children aged 5 and up, it’s an accessible escape into nature’s artistry. Whether you’re a first-time visitor or returning, the ever-changing floral displays ensure a unique experience every time.

Absolutely stunning! Visited here with a friend at the start of June and the flowers were so vibrant, colourful and diverse! The sea of baby blue eyes, the garden of roses... so stunning! I loved the naming of the flowers too - would love to see some little facts about certain flowers. Eateries and cafes inside, camping available - this is definitely somewhere you could take your time in to enjoy the flowers. The lavender field wasn't in bloom when we visited so will definitely return to see it when they are!

The free parking is convenient, allowing easy access to the park's tranquil pathways. It's perfect for picnics with family and friends, offering ample space to unwind and enjoy nature. Whether you're looking to relax amidst blooming gardens or capture stunning photos, this park exceeds expectations. A must-visit for nature enthusiasts and those seeking a peaceful retreat!

Visitor center
Nestled in the Aso-Kuju National Park, Chojabaru Visitor Center is a gateway to the picturesque Handa Highland's hills, ranging from 800 to 1,200 meters. The area offers various hiking opportunities amidst well-preserved wetlands along the Yamanami Highway. With English signage explaining the geology and efforts to maintain grasslands, it's perfect for nature enthusiasts and casual strollers alike.
Nice place to start your trek or hike. Well mapped with good paths. We went here in winter so didn't see much wild animals, except for those small birds like a wood pecker. I think spring, summer and autumn here will be wonderful.
Lewis Y — Google review
Cozy space with lots of material and information in the locale. There have a lot of books on the plants and wildlife around the area, the region and Japan as a whole. Good books ranging from comprehensive reference to easy-to-use field guides. If the information is in English; it would be so much better for a foreign tourist like me, otherwise Google Translate works fine.
Jing . — Google review
Surprisingly well maintained and very informative. The boardwalk around is a nice walk, though in autumn you can't really see much. Some nice stops along the way to take pictures.
Kevin — Google review
A well maintained and informative visitor. The staff in attendance showed an interest in where I was from, and confidentially switch to English to explain the walking trails.
Pk T — Google review
Preserved and well-maintained wetlands along the Yamanami Highway. Lots of signs in English to help you choose a walking course, starting at 800 meters and moving to over 2 kms. The signs also explain the geology that created the landscape and what efforts are being made to maintain the extensive grasslands that have grown with the underground water. If you’re a nature buff, or just want to stretch your legs, I highly recommend stopping and taking a walk.
The D — Google review

Kokonoe Yume Otsuribashi

Mentioned on

Lookouts
A river valley and waterfall suspension bridge with views of the surrounding mountains is open to tourists in Kokonoe Yume Otsuribashi, located in Oita Prefecture. The tourist attraction is popular with travellers for its scenic views and clean facilities.
There were two ends of the walking bridge. The parking space was abundant at one end. This area was larger, with a restaurant, a shop, and toilets. A small entrance fee was required. A photographer was working here. They installed a stand for taking pictures. The first photo, which was a certificate of visit, was free while the second one needed to be paid. The bridge was not so long. There were a few staff stationed along the bridge. It was privately built with steel and was very safe. The view was three waterfalls, representing a male, a female, and a child. At the other end, there was a long stairway leading to a platform with a wider view from a higher point. No other facilities were built there.
Joseph C — Google review
Visited in late June 2025. Easy to find and big free parking. Need to buy tickets to cross bridge. 500yen per person. I didn’t want to go cross the bridge so I didn’t buy the tickets. I could only provide the car park and the shop there for your information.
SiewHong P — Google review
I first visited in early summer, but it was raining and I left with a bit of disappointment. This time, fortunately, cloudy this time 😓 When I visited, there was a kind of special service I believe?
—staff were offering free photo shoots and souvenir prints for guests, asking where we came from and treating us with warm hospitality. It was nice. The suspension bridge is 390 meters long, 173 meters high, and 1.5 meters wide…! Looking out from the bridge at the distant mountains and waterfalls is truly dramatic. I also learned that this place is especially famous for its spectacular autumn foliage. It definitely makes me want to come back in autumn.
기민주 — Google review
Plenty of parking available with staff guiding you for efficiency. The bridge itself is narrow and if you’re a bit afraid of heights, the bridge does a slight sway near the ends of the bridge but you will be fine! The views were amazing I definitely recommend checking it out. There’s no real need to go all the way over as there’s nothing really on the other side. Before crossing the bridge, if you time it right, there should be a staff member who will take a photo for you and they will give a version for free and a clearer larger photo for a price.
Phil L — Google review
If you are looking for a mix of adventure and breathtaking scenery, Kokonoe Suspension Bridge in Oita Prefecture is one for the books. It is indeed an incredible feat of engineering and yes, a popular destination for both local and foreign tourists. The bridge offers a panoramic view of the surrounding landscape—lush greenery during the spring and summer seasons and vibrant hues during the fall. I went there three times already, but the view never gets old. Crossing the bridge can be a challenge for those who are afraid of heights and can also be a bit daunting during the windy days when it swings. Nevertheless, it’s a worthwhile visit for nature enthusiasts and thrill-seekers. And yes... the burgers... I went there for the burgers, too. Don't forget to try one when you go there.
Benz H — Google review
The view from this bridge is gorgeous. We visited this bridge with light rain but that's okay. The place is well-operated and taken good care of. The ticket is 500 yen per person. There're also toilets and souvenir shop. We recommended the local fruit gummy and drinking yoghurt from Yamanami Farm.
Pirawan B — Google review
Places that require driving to get to, I went there on a Sunday, but there weren't many people. While crossing the bridge, you can take your time to take photos, and you can see two waterfalls. If you're going for a road trip, it's worth a visit.

Mountains
Mt. Mimata is a mountain with four peaks and scenic trails, renowned for its spring rhododendrons, June azaleas, and vibrant fall foliage. It is part of the Kuju Mountain Range and offers a great hiking tour that includes Mount Kuro-dake and Mount Hossho. The route features stunning wetlands like Bogatsuru and the gravel field of Kita-Senrigahama.
(Translated by Google) I parked my car at the Chojahara Visitor Center parking lot and climbed up. During the peak of autumn leaves, the parking lot fills up early in the morning, so two relatively large temporary parking lots are also set up. Start at 7:20 from the Kokonoe trailhead, which is located a short distance between Mont-Bell and the health center (2022.11.8). Climb the paved road of Ioyama Road in a straight line, pass the gate where vehicles are not allowed, and continue along the road to the Sabo Dam. After climbing the steep ascent from Sugamorikoshi branch, the sunrise from Mt. Mitsumata is beautiful. After joining the main road, we quickly pass through the areas where falling rocks are likely to occur, praying. After crossing the stream, climb up the rocky slope along the yellow mark. We arrived at the Sumo Shugoe Shelter 1 hour and 40 minutes after the start. After climbing the final steep climb, we reached the ridgeline of Mt. Mitamata. First, go to the west peak (1,678m). We arrived 2 hours and 10 minutes after starting (including breaks). On the way to the main peak, visible just ahead, there was a good view of the Kuju mountain range, including Mt. Kuju, Mt. Nakadake, and Mt. Inasei, as well as Mt. Nekodake, one of the five mountains of Aso. Pass from the main peak to the north peak and head towards the south peak. From here, Mt. Ofuna can be seen directly ahead. Finally, we climbed up to Peak IV and it was time for lunch. Even though the peak of autumn leaves has passed, the view is still spectacular. Once you've had your fill, head down the mountain. I returned to the Chojahara parking lot just before 2pm. The trip took about 6 and a half hours (including breaks). You won't be able to do it if you're in a hiking mood, so you'll need mountaineering equipment. The signboard also told us not to start in the afternoon as it would take 5 hours round trip. Kuju Forest Park Skiing Grounds

Mentioned on

Ski resort
Kuju Forest Park Skiing Grounds is a winter sports destination that caters to skiers of all levels. The hub offers slopes designed for both novice and experienced skiers, along with a dedicated kids' area for young adventurers. Additionally, the resort features an on-site restaurant renowned for its delectable shrimp curry.
I have been there on early Feb 2025, there was an expected heavy snow and coming with heavy wind. The service provided by the receptionists and the private ski coaches were excellent. They were patient and reliable. I am not good on skiing but I think the park is very suitable for all beginners and there is a good area for kids for sled sliding.

Great place to go snowboarding and very popular with the locals. This trip was about a 3 hour drive from Sasebo but definitely worth the wait. The admission was about $43 and you’re given an access pass to get through the gates to the slopes and to ride the ski lifts. The restrooms are large and warm, there’s also a shop for gear and souvenirs, not to mention they serve food as well! The gear and board I had was rented via a separate company. The slopes were amazing and not too crowded once on the hills, there’s even a few jumps where you can do tricks if you’re that advanced. Falling does hurt despite it being snow and can cause injuries so if it’s your first time be sure to wear a helmet. There are 3 types of hills that just go higher and higher, 2 of the slopes were available at the time and it gets very steep. I can’t wait to go again with friends, this trip was truly enjoyable and great for family and friends.

A relatively small ski resort but it's fun enough! Traveling to Kyushu in March, you cannot expect more from this ski resort. Snow quality is good for skiing, and it's also not too crowded, although the weather is a bit too hot already (~15-20 degrees in daytime). The ski lesson is definitely worth taking, not only because the instructor can teach you the basics, but because the quality of the video he'll take for you!

We went in end feb and it was a rainy day, so the ski resort was pretty empty. There were lots of parking spaces available. Rental of outfit and ski equipments were very straight-forward. Note: you will need to provide a passport for rental. Rentals were as follows: full ski gear 5000 yen, outfit 3000 yen, beanie 500 yen, gloves 500 yen, googles 1500 yen. After picking up the ski boots, you will change in the locker room before heading to an outdoor area to pick up the ski gear (for snowboard gear it is indoors) . 200 yen is required for lockers so its good to keep some loose change. Overall the snow here is not the best like you would get in other parts of japan but it is ok for some fun.

Update: Returned on a Saturday. Highly recommend avoiding weekends if possible. There was a large cue for ski lifts, and it was nearly impossible to do a run safely. There were many tour buses. There was nowhere to sit and eat. The lift tickets are priced higher. After about 2 hours, we decided to leave disappointed. After leaving Niseko and Hakuba, we were not sure what to expect from our Kyushu ski resort but I have to say we all had a BLAST. All the staff was friendly and helpful. The runs were well maintained and even had jumps/ mini park area. We will definitely be returning.

How is this place only at 3.9 stars?! First of all the atmosphere of this establishment is amazing. The view overlooking the fields, the mountains in the distance-it doesn’t get any better than this. Ordering the food was super easy using a tablet at the counter. We got beef and chicken dishes, and kabosu drinks. Pictured is the beef croquette set, which features tender beef with potato in a crispy breaded shell. The pickles that came with the set meal paired excellently with the rice, but were unfortunately not refillable. The beef was succulent-literally melting in our mouths. Chicken was crisp yet juicy. Definitely recommend trying the beef!

Nu:kuju underwent some renovations a while ago and reopened to the public from this month. The atmosphere is very pleasant, perfect for family entertainment when we come to kuju. The design of the restaurant and shopping area is very stylish, and their new logo is eye-catching and looks dynamic with the surrounding natural scenery. You can also bring your pets during your visit and play with them in the designated area.

We both ordered a maitake mushroom tempura platter and an extra shrimp tempura. We were planning a light meal, but it turned out to be quite filling. It was a good idea not to order the large serving of Zaru Soba. The soba was firm and chewy, like country soba. The broth was Kyushu soy sauce, but with a rich bonito flake aroma. All this for 3,200 yen. Soba-eater heaven. When I went outside at 12 o'clock, there were already many people waiting. At first, when I asked for my order, I couldn't hear the staff at the store, but someone who seemed to be a regular customer took care of my request and I was able to place my order without any problems. It had the atmosphere of a restaurant where locals gather, making it an easy place to relax. I had a very good meal with the Tororo rice bowl, where I could enjoy various side dishes and the Tororo was also delicious. My only regret was that some of the rice I went with had hard balls of rice. I would like to stop by again when traveling in this area. Recently, I visited Sala Carina Senomoto, an Italian restaurant in Aso. It had been a while since my last visit, so I decided to stop by on my way home. Unlike previous visits, this time I opted for their à la carte menu, which I hadn't tried before. From the selection of dishes available, I chose to have minestrone soup, pizza, and potato gnocchi.
Had a simple lunch here. Ordered a salad, a handmade spinach fettuccine bolognese, a spaghetti con le sarde and a pizza margherita. The food was made from local high quality fresh ingredients and the flavor was authentic. We enjoyed it very much. The price is a bit high though. These dishes plus 2 glass white wine and a bottle of San Pellegrino costs 10000 Yen.

The restaurant is small, with about 5 tables, but the ceiling is very high and open, and since it is in the middle of the forest, the greenery visible through the windows is very refreshing. The course consisted of the following: -Bread (with olive oil) -Cold cherry pasta. -Assortment of 5 appetizers -Fava bean potage and deep-fried sakura shrimp and scallop skewers -Genovese -Grilled sea bream and risotto -Grilled red beef -Zuccotto -After-meal drink Everything looked and tasted great, and we were very satisfied. It seemed like the owner was running the restaurant by himself, but it was great that the food was served at the right time and piping hot. It goes well with wine! The portions served were a little small, I guess? That may have seemed a bit off, but the course menu had a large number of dishes, so it seemed well thought out. The only meal that was the same as before was the tiger prawns that were included in the 3 appetizer platter. All the other meals were new, and they were all delicious. The cold pasta had the sweetness of both squid and sea urchin, and the sticky texture and cold pasta were a perfect match. The sea bream and clam soup (?...the base was risotto) was very delicious, with the aroma of the clams, the sweetness and aroma of the sea bream, and the texture of the crisp sea bream skin. Dolce also has plenty of coconut gelato and raw melon sauce! I was fascinated by the surprising taste and aroma. I always finish with grappa, and it went well with that. This is a wonderful restaurant that will impress you every time. [Previous review] This is one of the restaurants I'm most looking forward to going to with my family. This is my second time here (the previous review was listed on the Spa Greens side), and both times I went there for dinner, I was deeply impressed by each and every dish. Last time, I was impressed with the amount of salt in the main beef. This time, the cold peach pasta and corn potage soup were very delicious. The foie gras soup was effective. Among the four appetizers, the sea bream carpaccio mimolette (apparently aged for 22 months) contributed just the right amount of saltiness and unique aroma. I forgot to take a photo, but the main dish, the beef, was cooked at a low temperature so that the heat was absorbed perfectly. Just like last time, he seems to prefer using beef from Nagato in Yamaguchi Prefecture. Chef Tanaka-san is also a very fun person, and I have already made a reservation for the next time. Thank you again. Italian-style steamed egg custard with paprika and Kobako crab salad The sweetness of paprika and the aroma of crab spread in your mouth and are amazing. Is this cold beetroot soup really beetroot? It tastes so fruity that I thought Hokkaido bafun sea urchin pasta sprinkled with lemon has a wonderful collaboration between the garlic scent and the sweetness of the sea urchin. Grilled sweet sea bream scales with champagne and asparagus risotto with kumquat sauce The crunchy texture of the tilefish scales and the flavor of the plump, fatty flesh, the champagne and asparagus-scented risotto, and the citrus-scented sauce are exquisite. Nice soft succulent chicken cooked over charcoal and they were so nice to set up heaters around us as the weather turned really cold. What a great stop after a freezing time at the suspension bridge.

After visiting Otsuribashi, we were hungry and this restaurant immediately caught our eye, so we parked the car and went straight in. Mmm… the smell of meat grilling over charcoal was irresistible. The weather was cloudy with a bit of light rain, so both the bridge and the restaurant were not too crowded. We ordered two portions of meat and some soba for 3 people, and it was just right. Compared to typical yakiniku places, they served a generous amount of vegetables, which I really appreciated. If you’re hesitating, don’t—just park your car and come in. You’ll love it! 😋

Amazing and delicious yakitori on charcoal grill by a cute elderly couple. If you only speak English, be patient with the owners as they work to serve you. The chicken was well marinated and you'd have to grill them yourself. Paired with an egg (which can be raw, hard boiled or fried), a bowl of rice, some pickles and miso soup, the set costs 1600円 per person. The place is just slightly down from the Kokonoe Yume Suspension Bridge and we're glad we stopped by to enjoy our lunch here.

Fukuoka Airport

Airport
International airport
Fukuoka Airport (FUK) is conveniently located near the city center and offers easy access via underground, bus, or car. It features both domestic and international terminals, with direct rail service to Fukuoka. Despite being one of Japan's smaller airports, it is the fourth busiest in the country, serving passengers from domestic destinations and other parts of Asia. The airport boasts observation decks, free WiFi, nursing rooms, and a clean environment.
The redesign is superb, especially the international departures area. I saw how it changed over time. During my visit in May 2025, a central food station (Hakata Food Station) was already in place, and duty-free stores were placed. Because there are plenty, you will never run out of seats, charging stations, or toilets.
Harby N — Google review
Visited in July 2025 (International Terminal only) One of the reasons why this airport is great (for its users) is that it's located right in the downtown, with a subway line connecting both places. One even can walk from the shinkansen station to the international terminal in 30 minutes or slightly more if he/she is especially in a mood of a walk or a bit energetic. The international terminal itself is well designed, easy to use, and stylish for a medium-sized airport. I saw some reviews posted some months ago complaining the lackluster quantity of seating in the airside - can confirm this problem is largely rectified.

Fukuoka Airport is a great airport. Clean, well-maintained, and very organized. Facilities are modern, signage is clear, and the overall layout makes it easy to navigate. Staff are friendly and efficient, making the travel experience smooth from check-in to boarding. A pleasant gateway to Kyushu!

Having passed through the newly renovated Fukuoka Airport in 2024, I was thoroughly impressed. While it retains its compact and manageable size, the updates have given it a wonderfully fresh and refreshing feel, making it a very pleasant place to arrive or depart from. The greatest advantage remains its incredible convenience. Its location is unbeatable, being one of the closest airports to a major city center in the world. The addition of free shuttle rides from the international terminal to the subway station is a fantastic touch, making the commute into the heart of Fukuoka an absolute breeze. It’s a model of efficiency and user-friendly design.
Sorlo S — Google review
Such a pleasant little airport—compact, efficient, and actually quite pretty compared to many other international airports in Asia. Immigration was smooth and quick, plenty of seating areas, and a few lounges to relax in. Pro tip: take the metro to the last stop, Fukuoka Airport, then follow the exit for the free shuttle to the international terminal. It’s super quick, a short walk, and way easier than expected!
Genta — Google review
Be aware that the international and domestic terminals are in separate locations — you’ll need to take a shuttle bus for about 5–10 minutes. The airport itself is efficient, clean, and easy to navigate. Plenty of shops inside, with just the right balance — not overwhelming, but enough variety to find what you need. Security lines move quickly, making it one of Japan’s better airports for smooth travel.

Fukuoka Airport leaves a mixed impression. On the positive side, the international terminal is clean, modern, and well maintained, with clear signage, spotless restrooms, free baggage carts, and a wide range of restaurants and souvenir shops. 👌 On the negative side, the connection (about 25 minutes) between the international terminal and the metro station located at the domestic terminal is a hassle. Passengers are forced to take a free shuttle bus, often standing with their luggage, just to cross the airfield. 🥴
Big D — Google review
Nothing beats a direct flight to FUK. Fukuoka Airport is probably Japan's best airport in terms of proximity to the city centre. It is so convenient! Some tips for the airport: When you enter the arrival lobby and see the information centre and Tully's, the JR pass exchange counter is to your left. Next to it is a seasonal fruit store where you can score some great tasting produce. The SIM card/WiFi counters are on the right towards Lawson. Straight ahead is the bus berth taking you to Hakata, Dazaifu, Yufuin (if you want to hit the ground running!) The newly opened Food Hall you heard about is located in the transit area of departure terminal. The subway is exactly located at the domestic terminal, so if that's your mode of transport, take a shuttle over where you can also purchase their regional IC card (nimoca). You can also purchase Sugoca from the bus ticketing counter facing the road. We took the airport bus to Hakata, a 15-20 minutes ride to Hakata station, a main transport hub of Kyushu. The bus isn't very well-equiped in terms of luggage space, like a pre-converted bus that hasn't decided to leave it's day job.

Oita Airport

Spaceport
Oita Airport is a small but efficient airport mainly serving local flights within Japan. The airport offers various facilities such as restaurants, an information center, prayer room, and mother's room. Travelers can also purchase bus tickets to nearby towns like Beppu and Kitasuki from the ticket counter located on the first floor. For those with some time before their flight, a visit to the stylish Sansou Murata complex for coffee and scenic views of the town is recommended.
Just three mins after the arrival, a foot spa welcome you. So exciting airport.
Ryo T — Google review
Very bad typical Japanese rural airport with one of the worst access from/to the city center. How on earth someone could possibly think of constructing airport in such area? 60 mins to Beppu or Oita by only bus. Few shops and restaurants. Only one cafe opens from morning. Come on Oita!! This is an airport not a shopping mall...

Just a normal Japanese airport for domestic flight. It provides praying room for moslems.
Furqon K — Google review
Would say it’s pretty much a no-pressure airport. Also when you get to the exit, there’s a person helping passengers buy a bus ticket. There’s a short gap before the bus leaves so you could squeeze in a toilet break or if you need to do something. Pretty neat place.
Bernadette G — Google review
It is a small airport with mostly local flights within Japan. There are restaurants on the second floor, and there is a bus ticket counter on the first floor, just right where the arrival lobby is. You can buy tickets to Beppu, Oita, Kitasuki, Nakatsu or other neighboring towns. It is usually cheaper to buy both way ticketsw. Also, there is an information center, prayer room, mother's room and many other facilities. Most of the counters have English speaking staff, so language should not be a problem. Last but not least, on the first floor there is a foot bath - Transitional Japanese Foot Spa. It is free of charge and I think you should definitely give it a try while you are there. All the best.

Kitakyushu Airport

Airport
International airport
Located on an artificial island, Kitakyushu Airport is unique for its 24-hour operation. While it offers scheduled flights to and from Tokyo Haneda Airport, Fukuoka Airport is just a short train ride away with connections to more domestic and international destinations. Kitakyushu itself, established in 1963, sits on the north coast of Kyushu and is known for its industrial significance within Fukuoka Prefecture as well as various sightseeing spots.
Small but clean Better gateway to Kushu than busy Fukuoka. Took 5 minutes for process. But if you are a shopper, it’s not a place for you.

Hands down my favorite airport. Well maintained and clean. Easy immigration and security process. The view from the viewing platform is amazing. You can get there by a shuttle bus from kitakyushu train station. It takes about an hour to get there and costs around 1k yen. 10/10 airport
Marcin F — Google review
I feel like this is the most underrated airport. There are a few direct flights from Haneda Airport which I appreciated. This airport is very clean and have small but good souvenirs stores. and more importantly, I cannot say enough about how amazing the JAL staff are! Due to my health condition, I have to request wheelchair support and they have been the most thoughtful and kind staff I have ever come across with. They have coordinated with the bus company to make sure I can get on the bus seamlessly. I even received a thoughtful card from a staff. I’m truly grateful for the extra mile they take to make you feel special.

On Friday, October 25, 2024, at approximately 9:30 AM, I was scheduled to board flight LJ350 from Kitakyushu, Japan, to Seoul Incheon. Around 8:00 AM, I entered the airport security checkpoint, prepared with my mobile QR code as I had completed web check-in and did not require a printed boarding pass. Upon request, I turned on my phone to show the QR code. Shockingly, without a word or any explanation, the security staff member abruptly seized my phone from my hand and placed it in the security tray. Up until that moment, I had not spoken to the staff or even made eye contact, as I was simply conversing with my companion. My phone screen was still on, raising privacy concerns, and I instinctively reached out to turn it off. The security agent's expression immediately hardened, and he attempted to snatch the phone from me with increased force. When I resisted, he used even more strength to wrest it from my hand and put it back in the tray. His colleagues, all of whom witnessed this exchange, did nothing to intervene; one even offered an apologetic smile, yet none stepped in to stop this employee’s forceful and inappropriate behavior. This individual appeared to be a male in his 40s. What authority permits you to manhandle personal belongings without consent? What right do you have to treat a traveler’s possessions with aggression and such an intimidating attitude? Frankly, the behavior was reminiscent of a Yakuza rather than an airport security officer. After 15 years of traveling to over 30 countries on more than 300 business and personal trips, this is, without a doubt, one of the most egregious incidents I have encountered. I consider this a serious act of racial discrimination, and I will not return to Kitakyushu. I attempted to send you an email regarding this matter but couldn’t find a contact address. Have you removed your email because you receive complaints like this every day? I fully consent to the public release of the footage. If there is any suspicion that I am exaggerating or misrepresenting events, feel free to review and publish the footage immediately. The small, artificial island of Kitakyushu Airport seemed like it would be a beautiful and serene place. My first impression was exactly that. But this positive sentiment was ruined by one employee’s foolish, racially discriminatory conduct, which left a negative mark on the overall impression of your country. Was the friendliness I experienced in places like Tokyo, Osaka, Sapporo, or even nearby Fukuoka simply a facade to welcome tourists? Do your other staff harbor the same prejudices as this individual? It is disappointing to witness such an unprofessional display from your staff and disheartening to realize that the training standards at your airport are this low.

Small but a very nice airport. Many bus routes to and from the airport, not so distant from city areas. If your destination in Kyushu are located in east side of the island, this is a good place to land.
Taro Y — Google review
This airport is by far great in my opinion. Even though it might not be the biggest, there is a observation deck for you to see. Not too far from Kitakyushu, easy access. I would give this airport a 5 star. There are direct flights to places in Japan such as Haneda, so do not worry.

Kumamoto Airport

Airport
International airport
Regional airport
Aso Kumamoto Airport is a convenient gateway to the Kyushu region, offering easy access to cities like Hiroshima, Fukuoka, Nagasaki, and Kagoshima. Upon arrival in the city center, travelers can hop on the Kumamoto City Tram for a picturesque journey through the heart of the action. This affordable mode of transportation provides a charming way to explore the city while avoiding urban traffic.
Newly renovated compact but modern airport with handful of dining options pre-security as well as more extensive options inside. Don't bother using the lounge as there is no view and feels boxed in - the gate area is good enough for chilling.
Sho Y — Google review
Early July 2025. Small airport. Airport bus took about 40 minutes to reach here. As the counters have opening hours and the international checkin is a small area, I didn’t know where the checkin counters were. I went up to the second floor where the actual departure custom is located. Then I went back to first floor realizing the closed area is actually the checkin counter. I can extrapolate that if the airport is crowded, it might be pretty long queue for airlines without dedicated counters. The international departure has only one duty free shop and one tea room for tea. If you want to shop or eat at restaurants, after the custom, you move to the left into the domestic departure area. Then you have to go through the scanning again when you come back to international departure area. So those pictures you saw about restaurants and shopping belong to the domestic departure area. If you do not have luggage, you may want to explore. I have hand carried stuffs and didn’t want the hassle of baggage check again. So what you see in my photos here are the whole area of international area. That’s all. Two minutes walk one round. If you want shopping, go and pop into local departure area.

A cheerful and convenient airport full of Kumamon charm and One Piece fun! Kumamoto Airport is a wonderful regional airport that perfectly captures the spirit of Kumamoto. As soon as you arrive, you’re greeted by Kumamon, the beloved bear mascot of the prefecture, along with One Piece-themed decorations throughout the terminal. The playful designs and cheerful atmosphere make travelers — both kids and adults — feel happy and excited from the moment they step inside. The airport is modern, clean, and easy to navigate. The first floor has several restaurants and souvenir shops, offering local specialties such as Kumamoto ramen and sweets, perfect for a quick meal before your flight or a last-minute gift. Domestic flight facilities are efficient, and check-in and security are generally smooth and well-organized. While it’s a smaller airport, it’s very well-equipped — there are convenient seating areas, charging points, and clear signage in English and Japanese. Transportation to and from the city is also straightforward, with bus connections to central Kumamoto. Overall, Kumamoto Airport combines functionality and local charm beautifully — a happy and welcoming gateway to Kyushu that leaves you smiling whether you’re arriving or departing.

Nestled in Mashiki, about 13 km northeast of Kumamoto city center, Kumamoto Airport serves as the main gateway to Kyushu and combines modern design with regional charm. Its new terminal, opened in March 2023, blends safety and aesthetics into a travel-friendly layout.

Kumamoto Airport may not be as large as major hubs like Narita, but it offers an excellent travel experience. The airport is very clean and well-maintained, creating a pleasant atmosphere for travelers. One thing that stood out to me was the kindness and helpfulness of the staff. When we arrived, our luggage was already lined up and neatly arranged a small detail, but it speaks volumes about the efficiency and respect embedded in Japanese culture. Everything felt organized and stress-free, making it a smooth start to our trip. Highly recommended for anyone traveling to Kumamoto!
