Lake Kinrin

Bodies of Water
Kinrin Lake, located near the town center, is a picturesque destination known for its morning mists and scenic beauty. The name 'Kinrin' means gold scales, inspired by the glittering surface of the lake when reflecting the evening sun. Visitors can stroll along the footpath around the lake's perimeter, passing by hot springs and a small shrine. The lake is fed by both hot and cold spring waters, creating a beautiful mist on colder mornings.
Is actually very beautiful and water is crystal clear. But it is quite small, the place is over loaded with tourist. I came all the way the in 2 hours and the tour only lasted for leat than an hour because I am not interested with the shops nearby food stalls and omoyage. Do waln to the lake from station, the scenary is beautiful. Riding house, taxi or bus is expensive. Mount Yufu is there when you exit the station. Also take yufuin no mori train there, it is worth the experience. Beautiful.

Visited on Dec 2, 2024 — and it was like stepping into a fairytale especially the Kinrin Lake. Fall arrived late, so the leaves were still in full vibrant color — fiery reds, golden yellows, and rich oranges everywhere. Yufuin Floral Village was full of life, with many tourists enjoying the cool weather, taking photos, and wandering through the charming streets. It was a bit crowded, but in a fun and festive way. There are lots of cute cafes and souvenir shops, each with its own quirky or cozy theme — perfect for grabbing snacks, coffee, or one-of-a-kind gifts. If you love whimsical scenery, autumn colors, and photogenic little corners, this place is a must-visit — especially in fall!
Benz H — Google review
Kinrin Lake is a breathtakingly beautiful natural wonder. Famous for its crystal-clear, emerald-green waters, fed by both hot and cold springs bubbling up from the lakebed, it creates an almost unreal clarity. Read and watch videos about the magic peaks early in the morning, when ethereal mist rises gently off the warm water, shrouding the surrounding trees and traditional bridge in a soft, mystical haze but went there around noon not having the chance to witness that amazing scene myself. The lush forested hills cradle the lake, making the scene feel serene and ancient. It's a small but profoundly peaceful and picturesque spot, truly feeling like a hidden gem straight out of a Japanese painting. A must-see for its unique, tranquil beauty.
Sorlo S — Google review
Lake Kinrin is a beautiful and still spot, offering a moment of calm despite the crowds. As part of most local tours groups, it can get very busy, but its serene waters and scenic surroundings make it worth the short walk from the main tourist area. A peaceful stop if you're already in the area.
Karen G — Google review
Beautiful autumn colours! Nice place to walk. There are lots of cafes and food joints at the nearby Yufuin Floral village and the surroundings. Very popular place.
KC C — Google review
Love this place, once you visit Yufuin, here is the place that you should come. It locates at the end of the Yufuin floral village. Lucky that the time I visited, there was no crowds so we could take time to enjoy this beautiful place
Khoong Y — Google review
Kinrin Lake, near Yufuin Village, was a serene and picturesque highlight of our tour with Gogoday Travel. Just a short walk from the village, the lake’s calm waters and surrounding natural beauty made it a perfect spot for peaceful reflection and photography. The scenery was stunning throughout, and the gentle ambiance offered a quiet escape from the busier areas nearby. Our guide, pointed out the best spots for photos and shared interesting details about the lake, enriching the visit. Kinrin Lake is highly recommended for anyone seeking a tranquil and scenic experience in the Fukuoka area.

Mount Yufu

Mountains
Mount Yufu, also known as Oita's Mt. Fuji, is a prominent stratovolcano and a local landmark for hiking. It is an extinct volcano with an interesting tale from ancient times when the area was once a lake. The goddess of Mount Yufu ordered the creation of a rift in the surrounding mountains to drain the area, leaving behind Lake Kinrin.
One of the most beautiful mountains we have seen in Japan. The lower portion of the trailhead is wonderful for photos, easy and perfect for a short hike for families with very young kids.
Stuart C — Google review
A good, but challenging walk up to the summit. You arrive just below the two peaks , East or West which are are shorter but much harder final ascent. Views are beautiful below.
Vincent O — Google review
Finished this hike today started at the South main trail head, managed to hit both west and east peak as well and got to the bottom in 4.5hours. the view was incredible and the hike was a fun little challenge. We did it without gear and proper hiking shoes. The only risky part of the hike is the west peak chain section. Highly recommend for any avid hikers
Timothy T — Google review
Cool place. for hiking, relaxation. Hiking to the mountain, little one takes around 2hrs roundway. The large one takes 4-6 hrs roundway. there are special routes you can take. Inside the large one, you can see deers inside.

Wrinting review so late. Sorry, we climbed it on last February. The weather didn’t support us. Though, the road was quite slippery. You need some gear to climb it properly.

Came here as part of a tour package, has very nice views of the Mount Yufu. Beautiful and spectacular.

Amazing hike. A bit challenging depending on physical activity. We took a way trough the forest the day down, can be done, it’s more challenging and indication is by ribbon but definite can be done. The view is incredible, for the more physically fit, both summits are reachable.
Davide C — Google review
Nice & quiet Saturday summer hike. Relaxed climb up to the 'Y-junction' in between the two mountains with a fair bit of rock scrambling with metal chains nearing summit. Amazing view once the clouds cleared.

Yufuin Station

Mentioned on
8 lists
Train station
Yufuin Station is the central hub for starting your adventure in Yufuin. The JR Yufuin no Mori limited express train offers a unique journey with its retro wood and brass interior, as well as a buffet car with panoramic windows. From the station, you can take a horse carriage tour to explore the town's attractions like Bussanji temple and Unaguhimejinja shrine. Additionally, walking from the station leads to Yufuin Floral Village.
A really small station. But the employees take a huge effort to make sure it is very well organized and manageable. The gift shop inside was good and also the station stamp was very easy to find.
Vignesh S — Google review
The station and the city was nice, however I cannot feel any comfort here, it is way too crowded, most of them are Korean tourists, . I also cannot exactly tell what is main theme of the city, I meant everything looks confused, there are Japanese style and there also are western-like style. Well, if you are those who like to take picture with theme park-like architectures, this might be a place for you, but if not, don’t visit here, you might end up feeling disappointed and wasted time just like me. By the way, I have it 3 stars to the very hard working people who work here, it’s not an easy job, I know.
Hanshih L — Google review
Our Yufuin Day Trip was the highlight of the trip. But I must be mad to decide to go Yufuin on a Sunday. 😭 No choice though! After practicing buying the Yufuin No Mori for 2 days, I failed miserably even on the third attempt. We fall back to taking the Yufu that arrives before the first Yufuin no Mori. As consolation, I managed to book the limited express on the return leg. Unpopular opinion: The Yufu train was in better shape compared to Yufuin no Mori.
Alvin L — Google review
A beautiful small station. Located at the start of the main street and give you a beautiful landscape. There’s a waiting room for passengers and coin lockers are available for luggage.
Bimo A — Google review
A beautiful train station. We took the train from Fukuoka and then to Beppu. There is a public toilet on the left of the station and plenty of coin lockers/coin changing machine. Also walking distance to our hotel and to nearby attractions. Can see the mountain from here as well.
Jo J — Google review
-Can use this machine to get ticket from online JR booking or reception (only one) -Printed ticket will be received by staff after the train at the exit gate -Can queue up before train arrival according to your car number
Ka Y — Google review
Quaint little train station. This is a major stop for tourists to stay a few days in the highlands English speaking ticket counter staff very efficient
Timmy C — Google review
A small train station with frequent train service connecting Yufuin to Fukuoka, Beppu, or Oita which makes day trips possible. Great location to access places of interest in Yufuin. No further connecting bus is needed. You can explore Yufuin by walking right from the station toward Kin Rin lake. Toilet and outdoor seating are to the right as you exit the station. There is a foot bath but I believe it's not free and you have to pay fee.

Please visit this place! Due to pandemic it seems it doesn't have much visitors but the place is beautiful and the workshop offers a great experience. The staff is very nice and kind.

More like a 1990s country house from England with a few stained glass displays.

The receptionist was obsessed with us washing our hands in alchohol and wanted masks worn as she. Covid!! I’m not sure there is a single piece of stained glass that is not a copy , made in Japan . Of an overseas glass window , dissapoined

A small museum that gives a little bit silent time for myself
Mabel C — Google review
I rated this highly because it is beautifully decorated and designed, shows how the stained glass art is made, and is what makes Japan so unique - a country filled with treasures and influences from many different places. They have some very pretty night lights and small mirrors for sale to easily fit in suitcases.

(Translated by Google) I was looking for places to visit near my hotel and came across this place, and it was really great!! It was only 1,000 yen, but since it was on the second floor of the museum, there was a lot to see, and I used Google Translate to understand the explanations! There were stained glass paintings of Jesus, the Virgin Mary, and the 12 Apostles, and there were explanations about the history of stained glass in Japan, so I learned a lot. The stained glass coasters, wall hangings, bells, paintings, and more sold in the souvenir shop on the first floor were so pretty, but they were heavy and expensive, so I just bought the spoon rests. Still, they were beautiful, so I'm satisfied!! Some reviews said they were unfriendly, but aside from the fact that they only spoke Japanese, they were really friendly and nice!! Even though I only spoke Japanese, they provided helpful instructions with notes on paper. For reference, the photo was taken at the church next door. That's also beautiful. COMICO ART MUSEUM YUFUIN

Mentioned on

Art museum
Museums
Located in Yufuin, the Comico Art Museum is a modern art museum designed by renowned architect Kengo Kuma. The museum aims to blend nature, contemporary art, and architectural design. It features works by leading Japanese artists like Yayoi Kusama, Tatsuo Miyajima, Takashi Murakami, and more. The minimalist structure of the museum stands out amidst terraced rice fields and medieval stone walls.
The COMICO ART MUSEUM YUFUIN, designed by renowned architect Kengo Kuma, blends beautifully with its natural surroundings. The building’s architecture, with its small interconnected roofs and burnt cedar exterior, is inspired by traditional Yufuin homes, giving it a distinct yet harmonious feel within the landscape. The museum features an impressive range of contemporary art from famous Japanese artists, including works by Yayoi Kusama, Takashi Murakami, Hiroshi Sugimoto, and Kohei Nawa. It’s an ideal place to experience modern art while soaking in the tranquility of the region. A standout feature of the museum is its rooftop, offering breathtaking views of the surrounding mountains. The serene landscape, with lush greenery and majestic peaks, is the perfect complement to the artistic experience inside. Pro tip: You can get a 15% discount by buying tickets online, even on the same day right before you enter. It’s a great way to save a little before you enjoy everything the museum has to offer!
J C — Google review
Amazing quality loved the kusama exhibit the way it’s set up is masterful otherworldly and so unique to the location and design of the building- I’ve seen her work elsewhere but the way it’s displayed here take is to the next level. Architecture is astounding even for a novice like me. Such a happy surprise to find such a quality museum here.
Jenny X — Google review
I have some mixed opinions on this museum. The architecture is obviously a highlight, and it blends in perfectly with the environment. Disappointingly, the exhibits inside pales in comparison. Each artist’s work reflects the part of memories or thoughts they own that couldn’t resonate with ours. Some of which are boring, effortlessly put together, and even painful to watch. It’s hard for the makers to hear, but my whole experience on the first floor has converged to a simple reaction of “THAT’S IT??”. So to humbly show what my idea of a real, somewhat-more-interesting-to-look-at modern art looks like, I would like to gift this museum a picture I took inside, right next to the elevator door. I name it “The Desperation to Climb”. This work cues how desperate we are to climb out of our current state, and yet no matter how hard we try, our efforts seem minuscule, just like that desperate little thing in the picture. I’m sure my work will resonate with many, many visitors who are financially unstable, and more to come over the next generations. Please consider building Gallery VI and place my work in the center. You are welcome COMICO ART MUSEUM YUFUIN.
Hank R — Google review
Not the best bang for your buck when it comes to art museums. The space is pretty small, and there aren’t many exhibits to check out—but they still charge a hefty 1,500 yen for admission.
Sean S — Google review
Although small, I spent a little over an hour walking around this museum. The displays are absolutely gorgeous and I loved to see the different arts. All so different from each other. My next favorite thing was the fact that I found works that included some elements of where I was from. It was very lovely to see all the way across the world, thousands of miles away from home. The only problem I had with this museum is that the other visitors can sometimes tend to be very loud and I enjoyed the experience most when I was in the rooms alone by myself because it was quiet. Other than that, I enjoyed nearly every part of this museum, and I could see someone spending a long time in here if they took their time, really looking at every aspect of every art piece enjoying the amazing view. I also loved the fact that they gave me a QR code for an audio tour as well as a map guide of the spaces. Thankfully, I had headphones which made the experience very enjoyable, but other patrons did not have headphones and were listening to the audio with full volume. Like I said, the most disturbing thing about this was the other patron in the museum. Besides the immaculate and I tried to avoid them as much as possible.
Sierra B — Google review
A quiet museum that you can enjoy and appreciate art at your own pace. The lights really make the artworks pop. You can also see the works of Yayoi Kusama up close. The architecture of the museum is very unique and pretty.
Lilian L — Google review
Tucked away from the high street, this hidden gem requires advance reservation in its website. Featuring selected artworks from some of the greatest Japanese contemporary artists (and one of my favourite being Yoshitomo Nara), this art museum showcases an impressive architectural design by Kengo Kuma. Together with the museum’s traffic control policy (hence the advanced booking), I could truly enjoy my time in the art museum! Truly one of the best art appreciation experiences!
Yvonne T — Google review
COMICO ART MUSEUM YUFUIN is a must-visit destination for anyone interested in contemporary Japanese art. As soon as I stepped inside, I was captivated by the powerful yet whimsical works of Yayoi Kusama, Takashi Murakami, and others. The museum's harmonious integration with the natural beauty of Yufuin's mountains created an incredibly serene and inspiring atmosphere. Wandering through the galleries, I was continuously awed by the artists' unique perspectives and technical mastery. The chance to see large-scale installations like Yoshitomo Nara's "Your Dog" on the second-floor platform was a particular highlight. Overall, this museum offers a truly immersive and unforgettable experience. Highly recommended for art enthusiasts and nature lovers alike!

Tenso Shrine is a serene and tranquil place located right next to Kirin Lake. It offers a phenomenal experience, with benches providing the perfect spot to sit back and enjoy the beautiful scenery of cormorant birds surveying the lake from the top of the torii gate. Visitors can pay their respects by following traditional rituals such as offering coins, bowing, clapping hands, and offering silent prayers to the deity.
It was heavy rain when I was there. It become more quiet but the sound of rain drop. Very good experience. And did you see the tiny crabs hiding in the rock? Be quiet and they show up.
杜信暹(脫客作文) — Google review
Tenso Shrine (天祖神社) is a serene and historic shrine located next to Kirin Lake in Yufuin, Oita Prefecture, Japan. Known for its tranquil beauty, the shrine features a stone torii gate rising from the lake, a sacred cedar tree over 1,000 years old, and a pure spring flowing from the stone walls. The shrine is associated with a legendary dragon god story, adding a mystical touch to its peaceful surroundings. It's a popular spot for photography and offers a picturesque escape with stunning views of Kirin Lake.
Yang — Google review
While everyone is crowding around taking photos of the lake with Mt Yufu in the background, circle round to the right side of the lake to access Tenso Shrine. Tenso Shrine and Lake Kinrin are linked by a dragon god legend. A power spot was created when a lost dragon seeked sanctuary and Tenso Kami granted its wish, springing forth clear spring water from the lakebed and shrine grounds. The torii gate with its stone foundation visible mean the lake has not receded or raised over the years. Take a sit on the bench facing the lake for a tranquil experience!
Alvin L — Google review
A small - pretty Shinto shrine on the bank of Kirin Lake in Yufuin, Oita Prefecture. The small main hall faces the lake. There is a small chair that we can see "floating torii" or a Shinto gate in the water. It's very clam and beautiful.
Piyawat B — Google review
A shrine situated right next to the Kirin lake. Serene & tranquil. Simply phenomenal~ How to pay respect at shrine: first, put in the coin (preferably ¥5, go-en, simply means establishing a connection with the deity), then bow twice, clap your hands twice or ring the bell if there is one - this means to chase away evil spirits, then offer your silent prayer to the god (kami-sama) and end with a bow.

Cake shop
Donut shop
B-speak, located at the Beppu Bay Service Station in Japan, is a popular spot known for its legendary Swiss roll. The store uses only four ingredients to make their butter and offers a not-too-sweet cream. Visitors rave about the unbelievably soft sponge and delicious whipped cream that melts in your mouth. It's recommended to arrive early or even call ahead to reserve as they tend to sell out quickly.
Definitely worth the hype. Apart from the croquettes that are a must-eat when visiting here in Yufuin, this is surely the other must-eat item! A swiss roll like no other! Super yummy - it's soft, taste is just right, not overly sweet, and most importantly, not the least bit too rich at all! It tends to finish early so be sure to be fairly early to catch it in the first half of the day. If driving and coming by for takeaways, parking is across the street down a narrow, almost hidden lane. But signs are there ro direct.
Garett L — Google review
Everyone recommended the swiss roll cake from this shop, but they only sell it as a whole and not sliced. Too bad - probably next time.
Otto L — Google review
Went at 3pm and they had a whole role available. Ate it at 8pm in our room and the three of us INHALED it, it was the best roll cake of our lives. So soft and fluffy and not very sweet. We will be thinking of this cake for a long time…
G C — Google review
Came back after almost 10 years still want to try the roll again. As expected, original flavor roll is soft and bouncy. Cream in between is the central theme. They can maintain the quality in all these years. However, as customers bought these ‘not cheapo’ confectionery, giving complimentary one set of fork and knife is basic, however, they have to charge them extra. This makes experience looks incomplete. See if they reconsider giving complimentary fork and knives on demand.
Sunny S — Google review
They are known for the B-speak soft and fluffy roll which is supposed to be soft and has a rich taste, the fresh cream filling. It's almost too beautiful to eat, especially with the packaging. They also offer cheesecake. In the same shop they sells Theomurata chocolates in various flavors, and the tea room offering of fruit and chocolate ice cream looks so good in the poster photo. It's not cheap but so elegant even the shop setting and decor.
Saifu A — Google review
You will hit B-speak on your way into the main shopping street. When we got there before the first Mori train arrived, stocks were aplenty. When we returned around 4pm, the plain rolls were sold out by then. Yes, they only sell by the roll but you can get the smaller slices onboard Mori and while stocks last.
Alvin L — Google review
Amazing egg roll. Must-try in my opinion. The cream was creamy yet light, while the cake was fluffy, soft, and eggy. Balance between cake and cream was also perfect. We got the original flavour. Ordering strategy is to get there early and then order first. Then pickup from the store when you are done exploring the area. We got to the store at around 1130am. You might be able to call and reserve a day before, but not sure. Will sell out if you go to the store too late. Would come and buy again for sure.
Ryan C — Google review
the BIG hype of the B-speak soft and fluffy P-roll, let's try ! YES, the rich taste (chocolate roll), the softness, and the fresh cream are all excellent quality (arguably, the best). the ice pack is handy and allows us to roam around with the roll for few hours before we return to the resort. we ate the first half on the same day, which was very good; then we finished the second half the next day, which was still good+ ! wish they have more outlets and we could get the roll as easy !

$$$$affordable
Italian restaurant
Restaurant
Pizzeria 櫟の丘 is a charming spot nestled on a small hill near Yufuin, offering breathtaking views of the valley and mountains. The restaurant serves delectable wood-oven pizzas and homemade pasta, using high-quality and fresh ingredients. The cozy interior and warm hospitality create a welcoming atmosphere for visitors. With an extension of more space and seats, it's recommended to book in advance, especially during weekends and holidays due to its popularity.
Delicious pizza and great vibes! I’ll be back as soon as I can. They also have an excellent wine list I would like to try next trip. Amazing atmosphere!

We came in without reservation but they still manage to give us a seat. Love the ambience of the place. Set in a quaint location nearer to the woods but has a clear view of the scenary. Food was superb. The pizza was thin crusted but fired to perfection. We ordered the lobster pasta and it was the best in a long time! Love the creamy thick sauce and the fresh, sweet lobster! I'd totally fly in again to visit them!
Lena H — Google review
Food, service, ambience was wonderful. Even in the cold weather, heaters were set up to allow customers to enjoy the meal in comfort. Pasta was freshly made and cooked Al dente, paired with the lobster and sauce, it is a must order dish and worth the wait! There is also outdoor seating available that has a great view over Yufuin Town. Do give it a try if you’re in the area!

Pretty good - we ordered pumpkin soup, margherita pizza and pork ribs. Came out feeling satisfied. It's almost all locals here which is nice - or it could just be its dinner time and most tourist groups don't bring their guests here. Anyway you definitely have to drive - it's a bit of a walk up. Plenty of parking slots. Best to make a recommendation.
Joshua N — Google review
People come here for the nice view and freshly baked pizza. Each pizza was around 9-inches, so perfect for each person. They also put at least one oyster on each slice of the oyster pizza. The pasta was abit off from the price tag, the quality of the pasta noodle was too average.
Hank R — Google review
An absolute hidden gem. Ordered the magherita pizza and the lamb chops. Cooked to perfection! Coupled with the amazing views, just amazing. Despite being dinner time, the place is still relatively quiet.
Berwin — Google review
Excellent Italian Pizza! The best pizza we've had outside of Europe, ever. Really really good and such a nice surprise in this remote location. Staff is very friendly and speaks English. Pizzas are done in less than 5 minutes! Went here three times for takeaway.
Tim K — Google review
Heard this place was excellent, and super popular. Turned up without a reservation but they found me a spot no problems. The pizzas were some of the best I've ever had. The staff were all great and the atmosphere was relaxed and cozy. Amazing outdoor dining with an exceptional view. Can highly recommend

Japanese restaurant
Soba noodle shop
YunotakeAn is a spacious and tastefully arranged restaurant in Oita that offers a serene dining experience with beautiful garden views. The menu features delectable dishes such as black cow beef syeak zen, Sumibiyaki beeftekidon, and seafood options. Guests praise the delicious steak over rice and eel over rice, highlighting the quality ingredients and balanced flavors.
Wine list is good ! We were there for lunch- delicious unagi rice, pork roast skewers, tasty platter. Very nice ambience. Excellent hospitality by senior crew , young crew need more professionalism and politeness- but no flaws. Please check menu prices before you dine - dont dine then complain - simple
C ( — Google review
This restaurant appears overrated. Quality of food was average, taste was meh, and cost performance was poor. There were bones in almost all the pieces of carp sashimi. I have had carp sashimi without any bones in many other places. Fried soft-shelled turtle also had bones in the meat. One of the most disappointing meal of our visit to Fukuoka. Avoid if you can, and just eat street food. We enjoyed the street food in the area so much more than the food from this restaurant.
Cheong N — Google review
It's a very "Japanese Feels" restaurant. It's located inside a nice Japanese Zen Garden, just next to the famous lake. The food is good, I ordered their grill chicken lunch set. I'm quite satisfying with the taste, price, and service! Instead of queuing up long at those tourist hotspots restaurant, might as well having your lunch/dinner here with a breeze!
Jimmy L — Google review
Was looking for something cheap or easy around , but only this high end restaurant open The eel don is good Interior pretty, other tourists kind loud Service is nice, explain everything like some menu already sold out Alchol alright, chicken tepanyaki some part really good some part kind of hard
P86111 — Google review
This is probably the worst restaurant I experienced in JP. Bland food, sashimi is trout which tastes super weird. We requested to change the fish but they claim they have been in business for 60 years, so it MUST BE US that can’t appreciate their food. But honestly it’s just bad food, arrogant services, please avoid and save your money for any other restaurant around here.
Alex L — Google review
Lovely calm oasis, so peaceful and you’re able to enjoy your spectacular food in serene surroundings. We tried all 3 lunch sets: chicken, beef and unagi. They were all good and unique in their own way.
Jody, Y — Google review
Spacious and nicely decorated restaurant. You have to put your name down and they let you know when you should come back for your table. You can easily pass time walking around the shopping street. My advice is to go there first get an appointment, then you can walk around the shopping street. The waitresses are friendly and the atmosphere of the restaurant is excellent. We had the steak rice and steak set with grill mushrooms. The steaks were fantastic and cooked to perfection, soft and juicy. One of the best I have had in Japan. The mushrooms were delicious and fresh. They only serve limited quantities everyday. Price is reasonable and quality is top notch!
Ray — Google review
A lovely restaurant that we popped in hopping for availability & thankfully there was! What a treat! Pricey for us but truly Oiishi! Delicious indeed! The Oita Wagyu Beef fillet was tender & tasty! The eel was just lovely! We balanced our meals with a salad to start with! Green tea was good! Thankful that they have an English menu to refer to! Very good for a special dinner!

Yufumabushi Shin

Mentioned on
2 lists
$$$$expensive
Japanese regional restaurant
Yufumabushi Shin is a popular restaurant in Yufuin known for its classic regional dishes. The restaurant has floor-to-ceiling windows and often has long lines, especially during lunch hours. They serve only three types of food: rice topped with chicken, unagi, or Bungo beef in ceramic clay pots.
Although there was a long queue, the staff placed a lot of chairs for customers to wait in comfort. The appetisers are alright, but the highlight was the main dish. Ordered the beef claypot bowl and the meat was tender. The claypot was deep, so there was actually quite a lot of rice. There were different condiments and clear broth given which you can experiment with, I love adding the spicy paste as it gives it added kick. Highly recommend this place!
L — Google review
It was an interesting experience but was it worth the wait? Probably not, other than to dine at a well established eatery. We waited for about 35 minutes - you first queue in a line outside along the road before moving on to a row of seats just outside the eatery. A short while later, your table should be ready. They have three main sets - chicken, beef and unagi (eel) - for around 3000 yen each, which come with a variety of appetisers like pickles and vegetables, as well as a bowl of delish miso soup with tasty small mushrooms, I found the unagi to be tasty, but the portion was small. The beef was better in size and taste. The rice is in a claypot style and if you leave it in for a short while, the rice crisps up nicely. You can also add dashi stock to the rice near the end, to have a different flavour and texture.
Steven L — Google review
We visited around 4 PM and there was no queue at the time. However, we had a bit of an odd experience—one of our family members went to the restroom nearby, and the staff didn’t allow the rest of us to be seated until everyone in our group was present. We had to wait outside until we were all together before they would let us sit. Just something to keep in mind if you’re planning to visit with a group. 🍲As for the food, the menu is very limited with only 3 options available. We tried the beef rice and the unagi rice. Both were delicious and came in generous portions. A nice touch is the TV screen showing how to enjoy the meal—at the end, you can pour soup over the rice to turn it into a comforting bowl of ochazuke (boiled rice) 💴the restaurant only accepts cash, so make sure to bring some with you. 🚗For parking, we used a paid parking lot nearby, but we’re not sure if there’s any free parking available in the area.
V P — Google review
There were only 3 options for choosing. Chicken, beef and eel. And the food was just okay and totally not worthy for the high price. 3200+ yen for just a bento rice with some side dishes. The mid age woman at the reception needs to improve her attitude to customers and be more flexible. I was with my dad who has difficulty in walking. And she kept on asking my dad to stand up from the chair and move whenever the line moved. I told her he has bad knees and can he just sit on the same chair instead of keep moving whenever there is customers going inside. She just ignored and insisted that he should move. Sometimes these people really need to learn to be more flexible and be more considerate to others instead of sticking to their "rules". Also, strictly no sharing, if you have party of 5. You have to order 5 sets.
Henry Y — Google review
This might be far inferior than Hong Kong’s clay pot rice. It doesn’t even have charred rice at the bottom or around the pot but they still supply you with water to soak the charred part of rice. Substandard! Rice is local Japanese rice which in my opinion is not optimal for such clay pot rice. Beef is satisfactory. Chicken is better than beef but the small chunk size decreases satisfaction. The appetizer is local I think but not delicious. Crowded and noisy, especially those tourists who cannot control themselves. In addition, smoke coming out of their kitchen is a nuisance to those queuing and residential neighbors. Why no environmental inspection? Once is enough.
Sunny S — Google review
There is no reservation system so we lined up outside soon after the shop was opened, and the queue has never stopped ever since. We ordered one of its most famous rice bowls featuring beef and eel, and a roasted chicken on top just to have a more rounded overview of how different meat was cooked. For each of the bowls there are 3 ways to enjoy including having it as original, adding side dishes to mix together and adding soup. Everything was well plated and simple instructions are shown on the TV. Portions are decent. Staff with high efficiency it did not take long to be served after ordering.
Kero C — Google review
One of the famous cuisines here is the Kamameshi (釜飯) and no one does it better than restaurant 由布まぶし心. You could smell the smoke from charcoal fire that was raging inside the kitchen to prepare for those delicious Kamameshi dish that is traditionally cooked in an iron or clay pot consist of rice seasoned with condiments like soy sauce or mirin, and cooked with meats with 3 selections to choose from: Chicken, Eel or their specialty – Oita wagyu beef. You could enjoy the Kamameshi dish in 3 ways, first eat it as is to enjoy the original flavor, second to consume it with the varieties of seasoning and sauces provided by the restaurant to enhance the flavor to your liking. Lastly place the soup into the remaining rice to enjoy a bowl of soup rice, 湯漬け(ゆづけ). A very hearty and enjoyable meal that also allowed me to learn more about the Japanese culture, money well spent! NOTE: Only Cash is accepted here – Remember to bring enough of it so it will not ruin your experience.

陽だまり食堂

$$$$affordable
Restaurant
Udon noodle restaurant
"陽だまり食堂" is a charming little restaurant run by hardworking elderly women. Despite its unassuming exterior, resembling a supermarket, it offers authentic and humble Japanese cuisine. The Hidamari special set and Bungo beef are highly recommended for their deliciousness and affordability. The menu features simple, fresh, and delightful dishes that showcase classic Japanese dining at its best.
Plain and simple home cooked, country food, support the local elder community before you head out to all the trendy tourist traps. They tout that the average of their employeees is 70+. It's like eating a meal at your grandma's house. The quaint market stall vibe will give you a first hand look into Yufuin's local community. The secret stall that you shouldn't skip is the soft serve ice cream corner. It's right by the check out counter and can be hard to miss. We had their strawberry-vanilla swirl and it was simply delightful on a warm summer morning. 💛👵🏻🍓💛
Yeti K — Google review
We went there for lunch. Good value and good vibes. Food was great. Love the pickles. Felt like a popular local dining place. Service was fast.
Awesome Y — Google review
This place is manage and served by seniors age 70 and above, they cooked up really nice and comforting local food. It’s nice to see them still healthy and strong, not to mention their wonderful service. Price is very affordable.
Melvyn N — Google review
Simple, flavor, very good price. All you wish of a fast Japanese local eatery. Aged mom’s cooking , serving. Great lunch in a sunny winter afternoon while waiting for train.
Dien W — Google review
The best strawberry bought in Fukuoka so far. They mentioned using hot spring water for nourishing. we bought 4 packs and 2 more packs the other day.
C H — Google review
The dango soup was delicious, with handmade noodles and lots of veg. Tempura was also tasty. Ladies were lovely and kind. Shop containing local products was also reasonably priced.
Cora — Google review
Cute little restaurant run by some hardworking aunties. A bit hard to tell it's an eatery from outside as it looks like a supermarket but was recommended by another shopowner so went anyway. Really authentic and humble food. Got the Hidamari special set and some bungo beef. All delicious and super affordable (¥1100 for the set, ¥1300 for the beef alone). Highly recommend

InakaAn

$$$$affordable
Udon noodle restaurant
InakaAn is a popular spot, especially during peak hours, so be prepared to wait a bit. However, the delicious soba and other dishes make it worth the wait. The staff, mostly women in their 50s or 60s, are incredibly sweet and provide excellent service. Arriving around noon may mean encountering a queue, but there's an efficient numbering system in place.
Very delicious udong restaurant in Yufuin. You need to expect a long que during lunch time. But inside, there are empty tables because it seems the restaurant would have numbers of customers they can serve. Food was made when customers ordered. It took a little tome but not long. Price is reasonable. 2330 YEN for two peraons. But only cash. Strongly recommend!
Eagle E — Google review
Udon was standard quality for a small shop. The fried tofu (kitsune) was big and yummy. Point deducted for rushed and inhospitable service and soggy tempura batter.
Graz — Google review
We went there at a peak time so had to wait a little bit but the soba and all other dishes were incredibly delicious and worth the wait. All the ladies--mostly in their 50s, 60s, if I'm recalling correctly--who are taking orders and serving are very sweet. Would definitely recommend this place .
Kyuwon L — Google review
This place was recommended by our tour guide and we went right before they opened, which is what I would recommend. The place gets busy and if you arrive late, expect a long wait. I got the tempura udon set, which comes with few other items and a bowl of rice. Rice was so flavorful and tasty, a lot better than the Udon in my opinion. Food takes some time to come out, as they make them in the order your order was taken. For tall person like me, the tables were very uncomfortable.
Jason C — Google review
We reached at 12 plus and there is a queue. There is a machine giving out queue numbers. Burdock tempura udon and the soba/udon set is good. The waiters are very friendly. English menu is available. Cash payment only.
Lee F — Google review
Waited very long for seats in this udon/soba restaurant with very good tempura. Surprising, there seems to be more Koreans customers than locals or other nationalities. But have to say that their tempura goes well with their noodles. If you don’t have time to wait for seats, then can skip. But if you have the time, then you will get a satisfying meal.
Yoong S — Google review
Not that there's any problem with the shop. In fact they have many customers. I think mainly is because of the location. Just to fill your stomach is OK, not so much about the taste...
James K — Google review
Saw a cockroach crawling on our table while we were dining halfway. Staff did not come to help.

Yufuin Sanshoro

Mentioned on
1 list
$$$$affordable
Kaiseki restaurant
Japanese restaurant
Yufuin Sanshoro is a charming restaurant offering beautifully presented and delicious lunch sets at reasonable prices. The cozy ambiance provides stunning views of Mt Yufuin and the surrounding rice fields, creating a delightful dining experience. Guests can savor local well-marbled beef served with vibrant vegetables, while enjoying the picturesque scenery. Despite the slightly higher prices, visitors find the perfectly cooked beef tender inside and crispy outside, along with an assortment of fresh vegetables in the salad to be worth it.
Food had amazing presentation - the menu is limited but it does have beef/seafood/vegetarian options. It’s a small cosy restaurant with good views and good service. A little walk out of the main town but worth the food!
M — Google review
Beautiful Obento lunch box. I had a seafood lunch box. I was impressed as there were lots of colourful vegetables in the box. I just want to say that it was a bit difficult to eat due to the shape of the box was square although it was tasty. (I visited there in Dec 2019)
Yuriko T — Google review
This place is absolutely amazing!! We really enjoyed the food, which was also beautifully presented, and some of the lunch sets are fantastic for the price you pay. There are great views of Mt Yufuin amongst the rice fields. Must go!
E G — Google review
Beef was perfectly made - tender inside and crispy outside. Salad was made with a variety of fresh vegetables. Although price is on the high side, it's worth it!
Christy P — Google review
Lovely cozy restaurant with counter seats overlooking the padi fields and mountain. Very delicious local well marbled beef served with local vegs of different colors. A delightful experience.
Melita T — Google review
Hospitality is the heart of this restaurant. They serve course meals only here and you have to make reservations ahead of time. No walk in’s. I have my fiancé to thank to get us a spot at this place. The chef and owner of this place is so skilled! Everything put in front of us is absolutely delicious. He enjoys experimenting so a lot of the food we have available to us in Tokyo was served with a twist... making the dish unfamiliar, new and fresh to us again. We were sitting at the counter table so we had the benefit of watching the chef prepare our dishes and oh, does that bring another level of appreciation to the food we eat. Must visit no matter what! And try to get the counter seat :)
Celine S — Google review
A little walk from the Main Street in town but worth it. I got the beef steak and it was perfectly cooked and delicious. It also has a beautiful view of rice fields to look at during your meal.

Molto buonissimo! This place was wonderful, great food (local products) and a fantastic chef, who served us some delicious italian dishes in between the japanese. We were lucky there were english speaking guests, because they could translate the menu for us. Lunch menu has english translation. Try the local beef!

Murata Fusho-an

Mentioned on
1 list
$$$$affordable
Soba noodle shop
Murata Fusho-an is a popular Soba restaurant located about 10 minutes from Yufuin station by taxi or bus, near Watakushi art museum. It's known for its Sarashina soba, Zaru soba, and Oyakodon set. While it's a 5-minute drive from the town center, it can be quite crowded and slow with table service.
Soba quality is OK, nothing very special. But the soup is. The dashi base of the soup is amazing. We ordered the duck soba set. In this set two pieces of grilled duck meat are added into the soup. This makes the already very tasty soup to have an additionally fragrance of grilled duck. The soup is amazing. Prices are higher compared to other soba restaurants.
Tieu L — Google review
Must have Soba! As soon as the bowl of Soba was put in front of us, the most delicious aroma of the stewed pork was to die for. The taste of the pork and the soba was delicious. Hope to get back there again one day. And the view over the valley was just amazing. Would have regretted if did not make the effort to go to this restaurant.
Tina S — Google review
Great soba, deep fried chicken and like their atmosphere too!
Elise C — Google review
Great spot to visit while in Yufuin. Is a 5 min drive from the town centre, most convenient with a car. It is VERY popular and we had to wait 1 hour for our seats, not because of crowd but because they are quite slow with table service. Don't come when in a rush, but if you have time, it is excellent. Like many places in Japan, every attention to detail is covered. The black pork soba was delightful.
Kevin A — Google review
Very nice. Handmade soba, very smooth and taste good. highly Recommended!
Eric K — Google review
Cozy place to stop by if you are in Yufuin. The place may be located off tourist spots but it’s worth it. First you got this perfect panoramic view of Yufuin. And second, the food here is so great! Try homemade soba, vegetable tempura, they are really good.
Simplysiri — Google review
Find it a tad over-rated and quite overpriced, after reading all the raving reviews. The view is also really very average. Staff however is very friendly and helpful.

Wasaku

Mentioned on

Yakiniku restaurant
Barbecue restaurant
Wasak is a highly recommended yakiniku restaurant in Yufuin known for its friendly and helpful service. The staff, many of whom speak fluent English, provide great suggestions on the menu. The premium wagyu meat platter and the high-quality Oita beef are particularly popular choices. Diners also praise the refreshing radish salad with plum dressing and the local beer served at Wasak. The restaurant offers yakiniku tables where guests can grill their own food, adding to the overall experience.
We made a reservation at the Wasaku. We where very lucky that we got a table. So we ordered a set and some other meat because we wanted to try also other meat. The quality of the meat was great. And also that you can barbecue it by yourself. The services was excellent and all of the staff can speak really good English. So we had a great time here. Make a reservation and enjoy a greater evening.

Visited for dinner and was impressed by the variety on the menu. The shrimp , shell were fresh, and the BBQ was delicious. The restaurant has a cozy ambiance perfect for both casual meals and special occasions. Staff was professional and accommodating. Will definitely be back to try more dishes

My third time to visit Wasaku❤️ thanks for the boss and let me walk-in to make reservations 😖 Beef is still remaining high quality , especially beef tongue 👅 Foreign visitor menu super recommend !! I definitely will be back again

Afraid that maybe hard to find a restaurant for dinner during the cherry blossom season, I made a reservation at least a month before. Appreciate for the excellent service, they would keep checking if the customers ask for any assistance. The food is tasty and price reasonable for this tourist spot. I spent around JPY11000 to order two beef sets for two persons.
VC C — Google review
The beef and sauces here were absolutely delicious. We enjoyed the Boss Set and 2 different individual serves of beef. The premium wagyu had an unbelievable marble. The tenderness and flavour were amazing.
Rochelle W — Google review
The food was delicious and the people were very friendly! Most of the staff spoke fluent English and the owner was extremely helpful. The beef was melt in your mouth delicious and super high quality. The local beer was also really good. We will be back!

Friendly helpful service with great suggestions. We went for the premium wagyu meat platter (with 3 types - 3 pieces each) and took the recommendation from the waitor and got a plate of the premium beef (cant remember what its called but it was the second most expensive one). The radish salad with plum dressing was very refreshing. Highly recommend this place. Bonus: There was a friendly cat at the car park who sent us off

Yufuin Burger House

$$$$affordable
Hamburger restaurant
Yufuin Burger House is a must-visit spot in Japan, offering a unique fusion of Western and Japanese flavors. Despite the slightly longer wait time, the delicious burgers make it worth it. The owner's dedication to cooking and the combination of fresh ingredients create an unforgettable dining experience. The cozy indoor seating adds to the charm of this burger joint, making it a top choice for burger enthusiasts visiting Japan.
We had the pleasure of trying two of the restaurant’s most popular burgers—the Yufuin Burger and the Teriyaki Egg Burger. These are ranked #1 and #2 on the menu for a reason. The owner was very friendly and mentioned that it might take a little longer to prepare, but honestly, the wait was absolutely worth it. Even as someone who’s not typically a huge fan of burgers, both were expertly crafted and made to perfection. Both were so delicious. We left feeling totally satisfied and couldn’t recommend these burgers enough! We really loved it!
Lisa — Google review
I think the owner cooks and serves the food himself, and he is very kind. The burgers are delicious and the special one is double portions, so the portions are huge. There is no combo menu, so there are no French fries or so and you have to order a drink separately. The burgers can be a little greasy, so I recommend getting some soft ice cream at the ice cream shop right next door, which is run by the same owner. Parking is available for one car and up to three motorcycles.
Jasper ( — Google review
The burger was freshly made, and despite the limited options available, the quality of the wagyu sliced meat—not minced—combined with fresh lettuce and tomato, truly elevated its flavor.
Tom L — Google review
This is probably one of the tastiest burgers I have had in my life! The owner was very kind enough to accommodate my requests (to remove the tomato and egg because I don’t eat them lol). The cafe is also such a huge vibe. If you’re an old soul, don’t miss out on this!
Hilda M — Google review
The Mog Champ sends his regards. I remember enjoying my lunch here during a rainy day in Yufuin! The place attracted me since it didn't look like your average burger restaurant! When I ordered my burger and sat inside, it felt very cozy! I got their signature burger and it was amazing, perhaps the best burger I've had during my whole trip! The inside was a bit small but it showed what the owner vibes with which was pretty cool! Thank you for the food and experience here Yufuin Burger House! I hope many other customers can enjoy a burger here as well! Mogliest Regards, Your Mog Champ

Yufuin Burger House. Orders are taken on the spot, and the average wait time is roughly 30 minutes. The owner may not be very welcoming, but the burger is delicious. The combination of ingredients, as well as the owner’s devotion to his cooking, make this a must-try. Due to the slightly thinner patty, it is ranked slightly lower than Bayside Burger in Incheon, but extremely near to the best I have eaten so far.
Eric Y — Google review
Highly recommended! This guy knows how to make an amazing burger. It was just the right amount of all the different ingredients to give the burger a great taste. Even the size selection was great. You can choose between large and extra large. And were most people go wrong when making a big burger, this guy does not mess up. Instead of just making a tall burger that's impossible to eat, he actually just makes it wider, just the way it is supposed to be done!
Tore G — Google review
Possibly the best burger I had in Japan. Reasonably priced and good portions. The burger took some time to cook but was 100 percent worth it. You can enjoy a great view of Mount Yufu.

Takeo

Syokudo and Teishoku restaurant
Takeo is a delightful dining experience that offers a unique and special taste not found elsewhere. The portion sizes are not large, so it's recommended to order a side dish or add more takeo-don if you have a big appetite. The restaurant has a laid-back atmosphere that complements the relaxed vibe of Yufuin. However, the food preparation may take some time, so it's best suited for those who can enjoy a leisurely meal without time constraints.
Tuck in a little corner of the street, walk a tad faster and you'll miss the frontage. Be prepared for a slightly longer time than usual, as chef prepares all dish fresh and you can tell he takes pride in his work. Amazing blend of flavours for the beef rice and cold soba! Restaurant fits approx 8 people at a time.
Yuheng Y — Google review
It's a small Japanese restaurant with 8 seats, of which 6 seats surrounding the chef table. You can see the chef cuts the vegetables skillfully. The food are prepared with fresh fish and vegetables. The decoration is very warm. I enjoyed 1.5 hour lunch with a good and calm atmosphere.
Martin C — Google review
Cute restaurant, quality food, smaller portions. They are extremely slow, as the chef takes his time and is very meticulous, so this will be either great or triggering depending on your personality and schedule. Staff is a bit stern, but not rude.
Edouard I — Google review
Amazing hidden gem with incredible chef. We had the soba noodle salad and sashimi which was both so tasty. Make sure to come early because the space is small and can only fit a few.
Josh K — Google review
If you’re looking for authenticity, refined flavors, and the delicate elegance of Japanese cuisine—and want your visit to Yufuin to feel even more genuine—this is a place well worth visiting. Highly recommended under those conditions!!! 😲👍👍 For lunch, we ordered four dishes along with 2 single glasses of shochu and 1 oolong tea; We had hoped to try another one or two items, but as the afternoon break was beginning, we couldn’t place any additional orders. We look forward to sampling more on our next visit!

Oita Airport

Airport
Spaceport
Oita Airport is a small but efficient airport mainly serving local flights within Japan. The airport offers various facilities such as restaurants, an information center, prayer room, and mother's room. Travelers can also purchase bus tickets to nearby towns like Beppu and Kitasuki from the ticket counter located on the first floor. For those with some time before their flight, a visit to the stylish Sansou Murata complex for coffee and scenic views of the town is recommended.
Just three mins after the arrival, a foot spa welcome you. So exciting airport.
Ryo T — Google review
Very bad typical Japanese rural airport with one of the worst access from/to the city center. How on earth someone could possibly think of constructing airport in such area? 60 mins to Beppu or Oita by only bus. Few shops and restaurants. Only one cafe opens from morning. Come on Oita!! This is an airport not a shopping mall...

A nice small airport. Only issue is there is no train connection. Bus is the only way to get here.

Just a normal Japanese airport for domestic flight. It provides praying room for moslems.
Furqon K — Google review
Would say it’s pretty much a no-pressure airport. Also when you get to the exit, there’s a person helping passengers buy a bus ticket. There’s a short gap before the bus leaves so you could squeeze in a toilet break or if you need to do something. Pretty neat place.
Bernadette G — Google review
It is a small airport with mostly local flights within Japan. There are restaurants on the second floor, and there is a bus ticket counter on the first floor, just right where the arrival lobby is. You can buy tickets to Beppu, Oita, Kitasuki, Nakatsu or other neighboring towns. It is usually cheaper to buy both way ticketsw. Also, there is an information center, prayer room, mother's room and many other facilities. Most of the counters have English speaking staff, so language should not be a problem. Last but not least, on the first floor there is a foot bath - Transitional Japanese Foot Spa. It is free of charge and I think you should definitely give it a try while you are there. All the best.

Yamaguchi Ube Airport

Airport
Sights & Landmarks
Yamaguchi Ube Airport is a small yet beautiful domestic airport located in Yamaguchi city, offering limited but sufficient facilities for travelers. While it may be small, the airport boasts a spacious and beautiful park that has become a popular spot for families to visit on weekends, especially during these times of isolation due to the pandemic. The airport provides easy access to nearby areas such as Onoda and Kitakyushu, making it a convenient travel hub within Japan.
Small well-decorated Airport... Not that much rush... Gift shops , Coffee shops , food court are available... Comfortable and specious waiting place... Railway station is just 550 m away...

A small but beautiful domestic airport in Yamaguchi city you can travel within Japan. It has a very big parking area which is toll free. I usually use this airport to travel to and from Tokyo. I like it.
Md U — Google review
Small and compact but still well organized. However there is no tourist attractions nearby. I will never use this airport again for that reason. There are airports nearby with much better locations. 30mins bus ride (910¥) to Shin Yamaguchi Station.

Compared to airports in northern Japan, the airports in Yamaguchi, Osaka, Kyoto, and Hiroshima truly stand out. Yamaguchi Airport, in particular, impressed me with its cleanliness and exceptionally polite staff. The check-in process was seamless, and passing through security took only a matter of minutes. This efficiency left me with plenty of time to unwind at their charming kiosk, where I enjoyed fantastic eclairs and sandwiches. Overall, I was thoroughly impressed with the organization, service, and comfort of Yamaguchi Airport. It’s a shining example of how airports should be!

Good place yo visit Yamaguchi Ube, Onoda and Kitakyushu area. There are no airline lounge for JAL or ANA at the departure deck.

It is a quiet and clean airport. The airport is very close to the ocean, so it is very nice on a sunny day.

First time here and just like the other places in rural japan even the airports are quiet which i like. No chaos, no children running or crying. Just typical japanese ambience. Wait till i get to the city maybe my comment will change.

The airport and its Park which is a very family according to type of Park is a great place to hang out on Saturday and Sunday. With the coronavirus these days and people have been isolated in their homes recently many people have gone to the airport and its Park to fill the sense of freedom that actually never really went away but was controlled by some mysterious event worldwide.

Kitakyushu Airport

Airport
International airport
Located on an artificial island, Kitakyushu Airport is unique for its 24-hour operation. While it offers scheduled flights to and from Tokyo Haneda Airport, Fukuoka Airport is just a short train ride away with connections to more domestic and international destinations. Kitakyushu itself, established in 1963, sits on the north coast of Kyushu and is known for its industrial significance within Fukuoka Prefecture as well as various sightseeing spots.
Small but clean Better gateway to Kushu than busy Fukuoka. Took 5 minutes for process. But if you are a shopper, it’s not a place for you.
Sona — Google review
Hands down my favorite airport. Well maintained and clean. Easy immigration and security process. The view from the viewing platform is amazing. You can get there by a shuttle bus from kitakyushu train station. It takes about an hour to get there and costs around 1k yen. 10/10 airport
Marcin F — Google review
I feel like this is the most underrated airport. There are a few direct flights from Haneda Airport which I appreciated. This airport is very clean and have small but good souvenirs stores. and more importantly, I cannot say enough about how amazing the JAL staff are! Due to my health condition, I have to request wheelchair support and they have been the most thoughtful and kind staff I have ever come across with. They have coordinated with the bus company to make sure I can get on the bus seamlessly. I even received a thoughtful card from a staff. I’m truly grateful for the extra mile they take to make you feel special.

On Friday, October 25, 2024, at approximately 9:30 AM, I was scheduled to board flight LJ350 from Kitakyushu, Japan, to Seoul Incheon. Around 8:00 AM, I entered the airport security checkpoint, prepared with my mobile QR code as I had completed web check-in and did not require a printed boarding pass. Upon request, I turned on my phone to show the QR code. Shockingly, without a word or any explanation, the security staff member abruptly seized my phone from my hand and placed it in the security tray. Up until that moment, I had not spoken to the staff or even made eye contact, as I was simply conversing with my companion. My phone screen was still on, raising privacy concerns, and I instinctively reached out to turn it off. The security agent's expression immediately hardened, and he attempted to snatch the phone from me with increased force. When I resisted, he used even more strength to wrest it from my hand and put it back in the tray. His colleagues, all of whom witnessed this exchange, did nothing to intervene; one even offered an apologetic smile, yet none stepped in to stop this employee’s forceful and inappropriate behavior. This individual appeared to be a male in his 40s. What authority permits you to manhandle personal belongings without consent? What right do you have to treat a traveler’s possessions with aggression and such an intimidating attitude? Frankly, the behavior was reminiscent of a Yakuza rather than an airport security officer. After 15 years of traveling to over 30 countries on more than 300 business and personal trips, this is, without a doubt, one of the most egregious incidents I have encountered. I consider this a serious act of racial discrimination, and I will not return to Kitakyushu. I attempted to send you an email regarding this matter but couldn’t find a contact address. Have you removed your email because you receive complaints like this every day? I fully consent to the public release of the footage. If there is any suspicion that I am exaggerating or misrepresenting events, feel free to review and publish the footage immediately. The small, artificial island of Kitakyushu Airport seemed like it would be a beautiful and serene place. My first impression was exactly that. But this positive sentiment was ruined by one employee’s foolish, racially discriminatory conduct, which left a negative mark on the overall impression of your country. Was the friendliness I experienced in places like Tokyo, Osaka, Sapporo, or even nearby Fukuoka simply a facade to welcome tourists? Do your other staff harbor the same prejudices as this individual? It is disappointing to witness such an unprofessional display from your staff and disheartening to realize that the training standards at your airport are this low.
Rex K — Google review
Small but a very nice airport. Many bus routes to and from the airport, not so distant from city areas. If your destination in Kyushu are located in east side of the island, this is a good place to land.
Taro Y — Google review
This airport is by far great in my opinion. Even though it might not be the biggest, there is a observation deck for you to see. Not too far from Kitakyushu, easy access. I would give this airport a 5 star. There are direct flights to places in Japan such as Haneda, so do not worry.

Very typical Japanese rural airport. Nothing special, no uniqueness, bad access etc...

If you're going to Kitakyushu or Mojiko, fly here is much better, quieter and faster.

Kumamoto Airport

Airport
International airport
Regional airport
Aso Kumamoto Airport is a convenient gateway to the Kyushu region, offering easy access to cities like Hiroshima, Fukuoka, Nagasaki, and Kagoshima. Upon arrival in the city center, travelers can hop on the Kumamoto City Tram for a picturesque journey through the heart of the action. This affordable mode of transportation provides a charming way to explore the city while avoiding urban traffic.
Newly renovated compact but modern airport with handful of dining options pre-security as well as more extensive options inside. Don't bother using the lounge as there is no view and feels boxed in - the gate area is good enough for chilling.

Early July 2025. Small airport. Airport bus took about 40 minutes to reach here. As the counters have opening hours and the international checkin is a small area, I didn’t know where the checkin counters were. I went up to the second floor where the actual departure custom is located. Then I went back to first floor realizing the closed area is actually the checkin counter. I can extrapolate that if the airport is crowded, it might be pretty long queue for airlines without dedicated counters. The international departure has only one duty free shop and one tea room for tea. If you want to shop or eat at restaurants, after the custom, you move to the left into the domestic departure area. Then you have to go through the scanning again when you come back to international departure area. So those pictures you saw about restaurants and shopping belong to the domestic departure area. If you do not have luggage, you may want to explore. I have hand carried stuffs and didn’t want the hassle of baggage check again. So what you see in my photos here are the whole area of international area. That’s all. Two minutes walk one round. If you want shopping, go and pop into local departure area.

A cheerful and convenient airport full of Kumamon charm and One Piece fun! Kumamoto Airport is a wonderful regional airport that perfectly captures the spirit of Kumamoto. As soon as you arrive, you’re greeted by Kumamon, the beloved bear mascot of the prefecture, along with One Piece-themed decorations throughout the terminal. The playful designs and cheerful atmosphere make travelers — both kids and adults — feel happy and excited from the moment they step inside. The airport is modern, clean, and easy to navigate. The first floor has several restaurants and souvenir shops, offering local specialties such as Kumamoto ramen and sweets, perfect for a quick meal before your flight or a last-minute gift. Domestic flight facilities are efficient, and check-in and security are generally smooth and well-organized. While it’s a smaller airport, it’s very well-equipped — there are convenient seating areas, charging points, and clear signage in English and Japanese. Transportation to and from the city is also straightforward, with bus connections to central Kumamoto. Overall, Kumamoto Airport combines functionality and local charm beautifully — a happy and welcoming gateway to Kyushu that leaves you smiling whether you’re arriving or departing.

Nestled in Mashiki, about 13 km northeast of Kumamoto city center, Kumamoto Airport serves as the main gateway to Kyushu and combines modern design with regional charm. Its new terminal, opened in March 2023, blends safety and aesthetics into a travel-friendly layout.

Small airport Domestic and international airport are same as the building. International airport gate will available for duty freeshop , the waiting seated room ,small macha tea cafe and vendingmashing ( can use the kakao pay)

Kumamoto Airport may not be as large as major hubs like Narita, but it offers an excellent travel experience. The airport is very clean and well-maintained, creating a pleasant atmosphere for travelers. One thing that stood out to me was the kindness and helpfulness of the staff. When we arrived, our luggage was already lined up and neatly arranged a small detail, but it speaks volumes about the efficiency and respect embedded in Japanese culture. Everything felt organized and stress-free, making it a smooth start to our trip. Highly recommended for anyone traveling to Kumamoto!

God awful airport. Sign said international passengers could use the shopping in domeestic departures, i tried to do this only to be told to go away by security. You can't even go through security until 90 mins before intl flights. Shockingly bad representation of kunamoto's government. Airport bus is confusing too
