Churches & Cathedrals
The Cathedral of Saint-Sacerdos at Sarlat is a must-see for visitors to the charming town. This architectural gem, dating back to the 9th century and featuring a blend of Roman and Gothic styles, offers a glimpse into the rich history of Sarlat. Adjacent to the cathedral stands the ancient Lantern of the Dead, a circular stone tower with an intriguing legend attached to it.
A beautiful church in the middle of the town. A bit noisy during Market day.

A magnificent building which holds the title of co-cathedral of the Diocese of Périgueux and Sarlat. It was listed as a historical monument in 1840. The sanctuary is dedicated to Saint Sacerdos. There are two saints named Sacerdos in France, but the cathedral's patronage refers to Sacerdos of Limoges, whose relics were received by the cathedral in the Middle Ages. The relics disappeared during the Wars of Religion. The Diocese of Sarlat was created in 1317, along with several other Catholic dioceses in the Aquitaine region, following the victory of the French royal forces over the Albigensian Cathar armies. Pope John XXII, former Bishop of Cahors, appointed the abbot of the Benedictine Abbey of Saint-Sacerdos as the new bishop of the city. Thus, the former Romanesque abbey church became the cathedral of the diocese. Reconstruction began in 1504, and Bishop Armand de Gontaud-Biron entrusted Master Builder Pierre Esclache with the task of building a new cathedral, initially carried out under the orders of Master Mason Blaise Bernard. Work was intermittent due to lack of funds, wars, and epidemics. It was not completed until the 1680s. The vaults were built from 1682 to 1685, under the episcopate of François III de Salignac de la Mothe-Fénelon, Fénelon's uncle and godfather, tutor to the Dauphin, and Archbishop of Cambrai. The diocese was abolished during the Concordat of 1801, and its territory was incorporated into the Diocese of Périgueux. Although reusing certain Romanesque parts of the old abbey church, the general style of the cathedral is Gothic of Nordic inspiration (presence of two side aisles). The Romanesque bell tower dates from the 12th century and is the oldest part of the building. It succeeded a Carolingian construction and underwent changes: the top floor dates from the 17th century and the bulbous belfry from the 18th century.

Such a beautiful cathedral. It is a fantastic example of a Romanesque 12th century Abbey. It has wonderful vaulted ceilings and lovely altarpiece lead light windows. It has a beautiful swallows nest organ. Worth a visit.

Medieval building with high ceiling and beautiful stained-glass windows, what’s not to like about it... Such historical town with a nice cathedral (was once a cathedral) to boast. Constructions for this place started since the 14th century, however, it was not completed until the 17th century. This town is a must visit.

It is truly beyond my comprehension how beautiful these cathedrals can get! You actually get a full sensation of medieval ages, and subconsciously diving over 500 years to the past! Make sure to stay longer in the church, and enjoy the organ play!

Sights & Landmarks
Château de Beynac is a massive medieval fortress situated on a cliff by the riverside in Dordogne. The region offers a blend of rural France's charm, featuring delightful cuisine, fine wine, and a romantic medieval heritage. Visitors can explore scenic rivers, serene valleys, and enchanting forests for a tranquil retreat from modern life.
Great medieval castle with stunning views and no crowds. Fascinating history and well-preserved architecture make it worth visiting. Important tip: Skip the lower parking and go straight to the upper lot (same price). The walk up from below is very steep and challenging - those with mobility issues should definitely use the top parking. The upper lot saves you a difficult climb and gets you right to the entrance. Highly recommend for history lovers looking for an authentic castle experience without the tourist masses.

The video explaining the architecture of Château de Beynac was excellent. The accompanying app provided an audio guide and the narrative about Queen Eleanor and her son, King Henry, enriching the experience. The view from the top is absolutely breathtaking, offering a unique perspective reminiscent of the monarchy, where you feel as if you’re overlooking the entire land, inspiring a sense of responsibility to protect it. From this vantage point, you can also see the nearby Castelnaud-la-Chapelle Castle. The entrance fee is quite reasonable, making this visit even more worthwhile. Highly recommend!

Château de Beynac is stunning—basically the Beyoncé of castles. The views will wreck you (in a good way), and the stairs will leave you breathless along with the view. Worth it. Also, the castle was basically for a woman who had two husbands bc she could. Iconic

Grand castle. Need 1 hour to go through it. Asked to download the application as tour guide. Could have provided a pamphlet instead of it. View was stunning and worth a one time visit

The most amazing Château we have been to yet! Well worth the trip, just make sure you park up top and not on river like we did. It's a very steep, but beautiful walk up the path if you want some exercise tho.

One of the most impressive castles in the Périgord. Majestic, its location remains breathtaking and its panorama exceptional. Indeed, this incredible medieval fortress, perched on its golden cliff, overlooks the Dordogne River from over 150 meters above sea level. A true movie set ! A tour of the castle will take you from the 12th-century keep to the majestic Salle des Etats, ending at the top of the Éperon Tower, where you'll overlook the valley just as the Beynac family, to whom the building belonged for nearly 1,000 years, did. From there, the view over the Valley of the Five Castles is superb ! When leaving the castle, we've visit the church, whose stately lodge is open to the public.

What an incredible castle. This ancient castle sits above the Dordogne Valley with an ancient 12th century village on the surrounding hillside. No guides, just enjoy at your own pace. A must see if you are in the area.

Lanternes Des Morts, also known as the Lantern of the Dead, are 12th-century conical towers found in Sarlat, France. These unique structures were traditionally associated with nearby cemeteries and are shrouded in mystery regarding their original purpose. The Lanterne des Morts in Sarlat is a particularly unusual architectural sight, located near Cathedrale St Sacerdos.

(Translated by Google) Set back from the main street, at the back of the cathedral, you discover somewhat by chance this magnificent little building, the "Lantern of the Dead". Shaped like a bullet, it reveals itself to you by chance. Small chapel, it is located not far from a necropolis, located behind the cathedral. Enter, and you will find yourself inside a cocoon... interface between the world here below and the world beyond. A must see, because of its shape, its purpose, and don't forget to read the sign nearby, evoking its history. Exciting ! Intriguing "monument" which origins date back to the 12th century. The term "lantern of the dead" is a neologism. In the past, other names were used, such as "cemetery lamp" or "fanal". Its origin remains shrouded in mystery, fueling local legends and stories. Designed in limestone typical of the region, this building is distinguished by its slender shape and conical roof. This monument, listed as a historical monument, represents a real enigma. Indeed, while some lanterns were used to mark cemeteries, others had a spiritual or protective function. The location of the Lantern of the Dead, near the old Saint-Sacerdos church and an old Benedictine cemetery of Saint-Benoit, reinforces its close link with medieval religious practices. The use of these lanterns of the dead, widely used in certain regions of France such as Creuse and Puy-de-Dôme, often symbolized a light guiding the souls of the deceased. The Lantern of the Dead of Sarlat is part of this heritage, testifying to the close relationship between spiritual beliefs and funerary architecture. It is interesting to note that similar lanterns of the dead are found in various regions of France, each with its own particularities. Some, such as those found in villages along the Loire River, also served as landmarks for nighttime travelers. Others, further south, towards the Charente River, were often associated with specific funerary rites.

The restaurant La Rapière in Sarlat-la-Caneda is a great place to go for a meal if you're looking for traditional food from the region. It's very rich and filling, so be warned - it can be quite expensive. The service here is excellent and the chicken I ate was some of the best I've ever had.
This is one of my favourite hotels and restaurants in France. I've stayed twice and each time has been wonderful. The owners and staff are so friendly and welcoming. The rooms are very classic, one shouldn't expect thrills. If it's authenticity then this is your place. I slept so well that night restaurant. It is my hope to go again sometime soon.

Tried the €39 three-course menu option and I have no complaints. You can choose between a few dishes for starter, main and dessert. With the extra bread it is almost too much. Good atmosphere sitting outside, friendly staff.

Salads are excellent and overly generous. White asparagus with soft-boiled egg were delicious, as were scallops with coconut cream and vegetables. Service was very pleasant, but it took too long to pay the bill since only one machine was working. Prices are very reasonable.

Had crepes here for lunch on the “crepes” side (beside Rapier, same kitchen). Filling was boring and bland. Everything was edible but not tasty. Salad came with old soggy dark green or black bits in with the lettuce (week old grocery store mix??). Very expensive for what it was. Unless you have to have a crepe, stay away!

The service was absolutely terrible at La Rapière. We came for dinner tonight at about 8:00 pm. An hour after we had finished our main courses, and after multiple inquiries, our desserts still didn't show up. It was already over 10:00 pm and our 7-year-old daughter had fallen asleep. When we asked if they could deduct the costs for the two desserts which we never received (~10€), they refused. A man who appeared to be the person in charge told us no one was authorized to make a prize adjustment tonight simply because his boss wasn't on site.

The Restaurant @ Hotel Le Meysset is fantastic. It's a relaxing environment in a beautiful setting and the staff are very professional and dedicated. I would definitely recommend a stay here!
Food paradise. We spent two nights in the hotel Meysset and I regret I didn't plan all my meals there, made reservation for one dinner only 😂 Fantastic cooking, great combination of flavours (without overdosing butter sauce;), extremely attentive, well trained service. And if that was not enough - epic views from the terrace. Unmatched quality that you cannot find neither in the town down the hill nor in the 200 km radius. Kudos to chef and whole team!

A lactose free meal was ordered. However, the potatoes were cooked in butter, and part of the dessert was ice cream. The starter was very basic listed as salmon, but you needed a magnifying glass to find it. The main dish was duck the toughest I have ever eaten. The second part of the dessert was fruit that consisted of a few cubes of roasted apple poneapple and orange. Certainly not worth the 27 euros charged, particularly if you are hungry.

(Translated by Google) We had a wonderful time and, above all, a great culinary experience. Food: 4.5/5. All the dishes were exquisite and very well presented. The only areas for improvement to merit a 5, in my opinion, are: the bread. It's a shame to offer such cuisine with basic breads, and the cookie ice cream must have been in the freezer for a while because you could feel the crystals in the center of the ice cream. Service: 5/5. Nothing to complain about. The server was pleasant, discreet, and explained each dish... Atmosphere: 5/5. Very pretty little setting with a magnificent view of the Sarlat hills. (Translated by Google) The place is nice and has a nice view. The plates are beautifully presented and the service is quality. However, the truffle menu is extremely disappointing. I didn't taste the truffle once during the entire meal. Of course, there are slats for decoration, but they are tasteless. When you can buy commercially available truffle salt or oil that perfumes a dish with just a few drops, it would be high time to add some to your dishes. This would avoid feeling a sense of deception. If I had to rate only the truffle menu, I would only give one star. However, the servers were very pleasant and it is obvious that the cooks are experienced, although not lucky enough to work with quality produce.

Nestled in the heart of Sarlat-la-Canéda, Hôtel Restaurant La Couleuvrine offers a charming retreat for travelers eager to explore this historic town. Just a stone's throw away from notable attractions like the Manoir de Gisson and Place de la Liberté, guests can easily immerse themselves in local culture. The hotel features comfortable rooms and complimentary Wi-Fi, ensuring a relaxing stay.
As a birthday treat for my husband I booked a room with dinner and breakfast for one night, so we could explore Sarlat la Caneda. It was a perfect stay in the middle of the town. The dinner was superb. And whilst the room was a little small it did provide all the comforts you could need. The bed was especially comfortable. The room was very quiet.

Very well-located, right by the entrance to the old town. Charming hotel with lots of history, but the rooms can be a little hit or miss. Most of the rooms are serviced by a tint elevator, but some required walking up flights of stairs. Half our party got to stay at the top of the tower, which had air-conditioning. The other half stayed above the restaurant, which had no AC in a heatwave (though they did provide a standing fan). Ah well. It was a fun experience! Hotel staff were very friendly. The restaurant sent up food when I had to take a work call. When there was a wifi issue, the front desk staff got it looked at and fixed fairly quickly. Breakfast is a bit repetitive but had incredible fresh fruit salad and croissants. Overall, a very fun stay!

This place is lovely. The kitchen and dishes are very tasty, and the waiters are extremely friendly and always in a good mood. The value for money is unheard of, and it’s dog-friendly too. Lovely location we had planned and booked this two night trip with care. Then we had an awful room, the door of which did not lock, the terrace was filthy and the vent from the kitchen was outside the bathroom window. The terrace was open to the public, and we found beer. Bottles dumped there on our return to the room.

The hotel itself is very traditional and a great location in the old town of sarlat.. its a beautiful looking hotel but unfortunately for me the room was so tiny that to be called a double room is very misleading.. you cannot open the bathroom door without hitting the bed, the bed itself was a 4ft which having a 6'4 husband was a no no... paid for 3 nights checked out after 1 as we had no sleep, no refund given not even a free token breakfast so very disappointed

We came here because of the great reviews, and were very pleased that they were able to sit us even though we didn't have a reservation (and were dressed for hiking). The service was very warm, attentive, and efficient, and the place had a nice, laid back ambience. In terms of the food, however, it was a mixed experience: Foie gras, beef carpaccio, and langoustine appetizer - 5/5. This was the best dish by far, with the flavors melding together beautifully. To be honest, this set us up to expect all other dishes to be great, but this was unfortunately not the case. Sweet breads with vegetables - 4/5. Still good, but we've have had better versions (sauces, accompaniments) in other places. Steak main - 4/5. Same as above, nothing to write home about - good but not much more remarkable/impressive versus even how we cook at home. Duck main - 2/5. This was the most disappointing dish as the duck was incredibly tough (we've been having duck throughout this trip and this was the toughest by far), and the sauce it came with didn't really go well with it. The onions (I think?) that came with it were also a bit burned, leaving a sort of bitter taste so I didn't even eat them. Macaron dessert - 3/5. This was very creative and interesting, but didn't quite work as well in flavor execution as in theory. I appreciated the ingenuity of the olives, and asparagus, etc but felt like it needed something to tie everything together, and make the dish more pleasurable, not just interesting. Fruit jelly dessert - 2/5. This was also quite disappointing - likely lots of thought and effort put in it, but the final flavors were flat/bitter/simplistic, and could definitely be improved. Overall, we liked around half the dishes, didn't like the other half, but truly appreciated the nice, friendly service.

This place is a hidden gem. My wife and I were delighted to discover that the chef, a former Michelin star chef, chose to leave the star behind for a more tranquil environment, yet his food remains at the highest standard. You are essentially getting Michelin star quality in a relaxed, welcoming setting. It outshines any other place in Sarlat. Every dish is executed with superb quality, and the service is exceptional thanks to the perfect team of the chef in the kitchen and his wife looking after the front of the house. You can feel that both of them genuinely love what they do. We are so glad we stumbled upon this gem. It is now our go to spot in Sarlat.

On my last day in Sarlat, I found its best restaurant (so far). Clearly a cut above the rest. The degustation menu is very good value considering the wonderful quality and presentation of the dishes. The decor is modern and welcoming. The staff is exceptionally attentive and the Chef is a cracker. Booking well ahead of time is unsurprisingly essential. Thoroughly enjoyable dining experience. If you have reservations towards French coffee (like me), don't order it.

In a town full of great, out-of-the-way bistros and restaurants, Chez Le Gaullist stands out. Recommended.

In the town but slightly towards the edge of town. This is a lovely little restaurant, the menu is fairly small and basically a deli, the meals are mainly a selection of meat, potato and cheese. The price is reasonable, the service is brisk and everyone is freindly and cheerful, so a fantastic place to eat and relax. You are packed in so it is a little crowded but this adds to the atmosphere. Well worth a visit. Even just to watch the meat being cut up....
