Sarlat-la-Caneda in 2 days

If you only have 2 days to spend in Sarlat-la-Caneda, we’ve narrowed down the top places you should check out to get the best experience of your time here.
Sarlat-la-Canéda is renowned for its remarkably well-preserved medieval and Renaissance center, with honey-colored stone buildings and narrow lanes that feel like an open-air museum. Its lively markets showcase the gastronomy of the Dordogne, especially foie gras, truffles and other regional specialties. The town also makes a convenient base for exploring nearby Dordogne Valley castles, river landscapes and major prehistoric sites such as the caves around Lascaux. Evening illuminations and frequent cultural events add extra atmosphere to the historic streets.
With favorites like Cap Blanc rock shelter, Le Petit Bistrot, and Canoës Loisirs - Canoë Dordogne, we’ll make sure you don’t miss out on all the must sees. We even included some of our favorite food spots around the area, like Le petit Bistrot and La Rapière so you can get the best taste of Sarlat-la-Caneda while you’re here. To see our full list of food recommendations, check out our best restaurants post. If you're traveling on a budget, you can check out our cheap eats post.

Fortress
Château de Beynac is a massive medieval fortress situated on a cliff by the riverside in Dordogne. The region offers a blend of rural France's charm, featuring delightful cuisine, fine wine, and a romantic medieval heritage. Visitors can explore scenic rivers, serene valleys, and enchanting forests for a tranquil retreat from modern life.
Great medieval castle with stunning views and no crowds. Fascinating history and well-preserved architecture make it worth visiting. Important tip: Skip the lower parking and go straight to the upper lot (same price). The walk up from below is very steep and challenging - those with mobility issues should definitely use the top parking. The upper lot saves you a difficult climb and gets you right to the entrance. Highly recommend for history lovers looking for an authentic castle experience without the tourist masses.

The video explaining the architecture of Château de Beynac was excellent. The accompanying app provided an audio guide and the narrative about Queen Eleanor and her son, King Henry, enriching the experience. The view from the top is absolutely breathtaking, offering a unique perspective reminiscent of the monarchy, where you feel as if you’re overlooking the entire land, inspiring a sense of responsibility to protect it. From this vantage point, you can also see the nearby Castelnaud-la-Chapelle Castle. The entrance fee is quite reasonable, making this visit even more worthwhile. Highly recommend!
Jihon W — Google review
Château de Beynac is stunning—basically the Beyoncé of castles. The views will wreck you (in a good way), and the stairs will leave you breathless along with the view. Worth it. Also, the castle was basically for a woman who had two husbands bc she could. Iconic

Grand castle. Need 1 hour to go through it. Asked to download the application as tour guide. Could have provided a pamphlet instead of it. View was stunning and worth a one time visit
Venkatesan D — Google review
The most amazing Château we have been to yet! Well worth the trip, just make sure you park up top and not on river like we did. It's a very steep, but beautiful walk up the path if you want some exercise tho.
Dave — Google review
One of the most impressive castles in the Périgord. Majestic, its location remains breathtaking and its panorama exceptional. Indeed, this incredible medieval fortress, perched on its golden cliff, overlooks the Dordogne River from over 150 meters above sea level. A true movie set ! A tour of the castle will take you from the 12th-century keep to the majestic Salle des Etats, ending at the top of the Éperon Tower, where you'll overlook the valley just as the Beynac family, to whom the building belonged for nearly 1,000 years, did. From there, the view over the Valley of the Five Castles is superb ! When leaving the castle, we've visit the church, whose stately lodge is open to the public.

What an incredible castle. This ancient castle sits above the Dordogne Valley with an ancient 12th century village on the surrounding hillside. No guides, just enjoy at your own pace. A must see if you are in the area.

Canoës Loisirs - Canoë Dordogne is a popular choice for families and groups looking to enjoy a leisurely canoe trip down the Dordogne River. The company offers well-organized services with easy online booking and helpful staff upon arrival.
We canoed the 5 castles route (16km) in a dual canoe, with a double paddle and single paddle, and it was glorious! Lots of snack bars and stop off points - we are by no means super fit, but felt very capable of the 16km route (with a loo stop and lunch stop). So well organised, many gorgeous views and very helpful staff. Would definitely recommend!
Hope B — Google review
Absolutely beautiful. We did the shorter 12km (2.5 hour) option. The scenery is breathtaking. It’s all very straightforward including booking by phone or online. The route from Vitrac to Castlenaud was great including for a 10 year old. The bus collects you at the end so you’re always travelling downstream. You can hire a big sealed bucket for only 2 euros if you want to take your picnic with you. We loved seeing the Villages and chateaus from the river. There are small pebble beaches, deep patches for swimming, and no rapids! We also saw 3 kingfishers. Feel so lucky. Recommend to book ahead as registration busy in the morning.
Emma N — Google review
Nice views and helpful staff. We had a very enjoyable ride along the river. At the end the driver did not pick us up, but we called and they came back for us. A very helpful team.
Carl L — Google review
We rented a canoe for two and paddled down river from 930am to 220pm with an hour and a half stop for lunch in Saint Jillian. Highly recommend stopping to visit the museum up the cliff side. We also had lunch at a restaurant there. Once on the river again we swam a little. Along the way we saw several fish 1m long I believe to be barbs. Some small rapids with a few rocks but overall a lazy limestone bottom river. After passing the 5th bridge we took a bus back to the star point. Rent a dry bucket for your things just in case…
Richard H — Google review
We hired a dual canoe here last week. Didn't book before. Very well organised and fair prices. The pick up spots were easy to find and everything was well established. Thank you

A fantastic afternoon, paddling down the Dordogne amongst the chateaux and castles. Well worth the trip.

Everything worked perfectly. Booking was easy, the instructions were clear, and the van transport back to our car was punctual. All the staff were polite and happy! They even provide a waterproof bin to keep your gear (wallet, keys, etc.) dry in case it rains or you tip the canoe. We started the ride at 9:30 did the 16km route in about 2.5 hours to make the 12 noon van to take us back to the car.

Visited in June 2024. The river was quite high and running pretty fast, so canoed rather than kayaking. Such great fun that we came back a second time for a longer run. Thoroughly enjoyable and would recommend to anyone. Anaëlle was so helpful on both days and made the whole experience so memorable. After getting back to the site after our journey, we enjoyed a lovely croque monsieur with frites. Just the ticket. The coffee was also good and dining on the bank of the Dordogne, basking in the dappled sunshine beneath the trees was idyllic.

The Tourist Office Sarlat Périgord Black is located in the capital of Black Perigord and offers a glimpse into the medieval atmosphere of the town. Housed in a 15th-century former bishops palace, it provides an array of brochures, tips from knowledgeable staff, and information on upcoming events. Visitors can also find souvenirs and trinkets at the office. The office also offers guided tours with entertaining guides who provide insights into the town's history.
Very nice tourist office with tons of brochures and lots of tips from the staff to go about seeing the town and region. They also have dates of futures events for the town and lots of little trinkets and souvenirs. I recommend their tour guide named Pierre, he’s quite funny.

Unhelpful tourist office staff who flatly refused to help me reserve the Bergerac airport bus, and had no information to share about walking trails from the city to the Dordogne river. Despite this, I managed the river walk myself in 2.5 hours - and also backpacked to the airport from Bergerac the following day (1.5 hrs). No decent public bus service round here - yet they complain in these parts about traffic congestion!

What a beautiful little village Sarlat is, with its middle ages buildings. We stayed 1 week in a private accommodation opposite the tourist office. The location is excellent and centrally located the sights around it. We hired a car, and found a car parking lot near the gardens, which was free of charge. The name of the carpark was Plantier Sarlat Carpark

No paper walk maps available. (They were on order). The app i was advised to download did not work. Pleasant staff but rather a waste of time on this occasion

There are several public toilets in town, one right near the tourist office and another that had only holes in the floor (really??? In 2025???). All these toilets are extremely filthy and have not been cleaned in days (weeks? months?). This is unacceptable in a tourist town. Shame on you!!!!

Churches & Cathedrals
The Cathedral of Saint-Sacerdos at Sarlat is a must-see for visitors to the charming town. This architectural gem, dating back to the 9th century and featuring a blend of Roman and Gothic styles, offers a glimpse into the rich history of Sarlat. Adjacent to the cathedral stands the ancient Lantern of the Dead, a circular stone tower with an intriguing legend attached to it.
A beautiful church in the middle of the town. A bit noisy during Market day.
Tin N — Google review
A magnificent building which holds the title of co-cathedral of the Diocese of Périgueux and Sarlat. It was listed as a historical monument in 1840. The sanctuary is dedicated to Saint Sacerdos. There are two saints named Sacerdos in France, but the cathedral's patronage refers to Sacerdos of Limoges, whose relics were received by the cathedral in the Middle Ages. The relics disappeared during the Wars of Religion. The Diocese of Sarlat was created in 1317, along with several other Catholic dioceses in the Aquitaine region, following the victory of the French royal forces over the Albigensian Cathar armies. Pope John XXII, former Bishop of Cahors, appointed the abbot of the Benedictine Abbey of Saint-Sacerdos as the new bishop of the city. Thus, the former Romanesque abbey church became the cathedral of the diocese. Reconstruction began in 1504, and Bishop Armand de Gontaud-Biron entrusted Master Builder Pierre Esclache with the task of building a new cathedral, initially carried out under the orders of Master Mason Blaise Bernard. Work was intermittent due to lack of funds, wars, and epidemics. It was not completed until the 1680s. The vaults were built from 1682 to 1685, under the episcopate of François III de Salignac de la Mothe-Fénelon, Fénelon's uncle and godfather, tutor to the Dauphin, and Archbishop of Cambrai. The diocese was abolished during the Concordat of 1801, and its territory was incorporated into the Diocese of Périgueux. Although reusing certain Romanesque parts of the old abbey church, the general style of the cathedral is Gothic of Nordic inspiration (presence of two side aisles). The Romanesque bell tower dates from the 12th century and is the oldest part of the building. It succeeded a Carolingian construction and underwent changes: the top floor dates from the 17th century and the bulbous belfry from the 18th century.

Such a beautiful cathedral. It is a fantastic example of a Romanesque 12th century Abbey. It has wonderful vaulted ceilings and lovely altarpiece lead light windows. It has a beautiful swallows nest organ. Worth a visit.
G M — Google review
Medieval building with high ceiling and beautiful stained-glass windows, what’s not to like about it... Such historical town with a nice cathedral (was once a cathedral) to boast. Constructions for this place started since the 14th century, however, it was not completed until the 17th century. This town is a must visit.

Le Petit Bistrot is a charming and highly recommended restaurant located in the heart of the city. It offers healthy and delicious French cuisine in a carefully decorated setting with a cozy balcony, creating a warm atmosphere. The restaurant provides indoor and street seating as well as a shaded terrace, making it an ideal spot for summer dining. Guests praise the attentive service, reasonable prices, and quality of food, including imaginative local dishes and an excellent selection of wines.
No reservations but we were warmly greeted. Nice selection of wine and a varied menu. Service was attentive. Food prep was top notch. Had the trout. Done perfectly with an incredible sauce. We will be back later this week.
Bob B — Google review
Nice sidewalk table but the rest was barely marginal. Server claimed to speak English, then simply couldn’t. Failed to replace silverware between courses and simply pulled it off the plate and put back on table. No bread offered. Steak like rubber, and too cool. Disappointing.
J P — Google review
Great food, service a little bit slow but overall a great experience. Nice place and decent prices for the location.
Thomas L — Google review
Had a lunch up there, friendly and knowledgeable staff with a good food!
Eren D — Google review
The place is lovely, and the service was fine, but the food was mediocre. We ordered a pokie dish. Maybe it was a mistake to order it in a French restaurant, but if they offer it, they should know how to prepare it properly. Cold rice surrounded by cucumbers, tomatoes, feta cheese, and salmon is neither pokie nor tasty. The duck dish was rubbery, but at least the sauce was good. The idea of crème brûlée with truffles is original, but really not tasty. The waitress saw that we took one bite of the dish, but it didn't bother her. At least the kids menu was ok …
Lihi K — Google review
The food was excellent, we all had some form of duck for our main course and the foie gras for starters was really good. Drinks were reasonable as was the cost of the food. A really good afternoon was had by all.
SJ C — Google review
It's a small cozy restaurant with very decent decor. I had the truffle menu and the taste was great!
Chin H — Google review
We dined here twice, once for lunch, once for dinner. The staff are welcoming, and we had a nice table outside away from the crowds of the main town for a more peaceful experience. We both had escargot on both occasions and the scallops, which were delicious and well presented. We noted the scallop dish had an accompliment of either potatoes, mixed vegetables or rice with poppy seeds, all of which don't really match the dish which could benefit from the vegetable element being incorporated into the dish as an ensemble. The wine compliments the seafood well, and they kept us topped up with bread. On the secondoccasiono, we tried the walnut tartlet, which was disappointing as it was comprised of an undercooked dry pastry base with a handful of walnuts thrown in and drizzled with a warm caramel sauce. This was not a tartlett which disappointed us as everything else had been so nice. All togethe, this is still a better offering than many other restaurants in town, and we would return and recommend it.

The restaurant La Rapière in Sarlat-la-Caneda is a great place to go for a meal if you're looking for traditional food from the region. It's very rich and filling, so be warned - it can be quite expensive. The service here is excellent and the chicken I ate was some of the best I've ever had.
This is one of my favourite hotels and restaurants in France. I've stayed twice and each time has been wonderful. The owners and staff are so friendly and welcoming. The rooms are very classic, one shouldn't expect thrills. If it's authenticity then this is your place. I slept so well that night restaurant. It is my hope to go again sometime soon.

Tried the €39 three-course menu option and I have no complaints. You can choose between a few dishes for starter, main and dessert. With the extra bread it is almost too much. Good atmosphere sitting outside, friendly staff.

Salads are excellent and overly generous. White asparagus with soft-boiled egg were delicious, as were scallops with coconut cream and vegetables. Service was very pleasant, but it took too long to pay the bill since only one machine was working. Prices are very reasonable.
Elliott L — Google review
Had crepes here for lunch on the “crepes” side (beside Rapier, same kitchen). Filling was boring and bland. Everything was edible but not tasty. Salad came with old soggy dark green or black bits in with the lettuce (week old grocery store mix??). Very expensive for what it was. Unless you have to have a crepe, stay away!
Stacey M — Google review
The service was absolutely terrible at La Rapière. We came for dinner tonight at about 8:00 pm. An hour after we had finished our main courses, and after multiple inquiries, our desserts still didn't show up. It was already over 10:00 pm and our 7-year-old daughter had fallen asleep. When we asked if they could deduct the costs for the two desserts which we never received (~10€), they refused. A man who appeared to be the person in charge told us no one was authorized to make a prize adjustment tonight simply because his boss wasn't on site.

Located in Sarlat, this gastronomic gem boasts a Michelin star and serves up top-notch French and European cuisine featuring seasonal ingredients like sturgeon, IGP foie gras, hake, and pigeon.
2021 update: still an amazing restaurant. Photos updated. Their pork was some of the best pork I had in France on this trip. A great Michelin starred restaurant with reasonable prices. Lunch menu on Saturdays are comparable to other restaurants in the area (cheap for a Michelin star restaurant, so great deal). excellent attentive service that explains their food well.

We came here because of the great reviews, and were very pleased that they were able to sit us even though we didn't have a reservation (and were dressed for hiking). The service was very warm, attentive, and efficient, and the place had a nice, laid back ambience. In terms of the food, however, it was a mixed experience: Foie gras, beef carpaccio, and langoustine appetizer - 5/5. This was the best dish by far, with the flavors melding together beautifully. To be honest, this set us up to expect all other dishes to be great, but this was unfortunately not the case. Sweet breads with vegetables - 4/5. Still good, but we've have had better versions (sauces, accompaniments) in other places. Steak main - 4/5. Same as above, nothing to write home about - good but not much more remarkable/impressive versus even how we cook at home. Duck main - 2/5. This was the most disappointing dish as the duck was incredibly tough (we've been having duck throughout this trip and this was the toughest by far), and the sauce it came with didn't really go well with it. The onions (I think?) that came with it were also a bit burned, leaving a sort of bitter taste so I didn't even eat them. Macaron dessert - 3/5. This was very creative and interesting, but didn't quite work as well in flavor execution as in theory. I appreciated the ingenuity of the olives, and asparagus, etc but felt like it needed something to tie everything together, and make the dish more pleasurable, not just interesting. Fruit jelly dessert - 2/5. This was also quite disappointing - likely lots of thought and effort put in it, but the final flavors were flat/bitter/simplistic, and could definitely be improved. Overall, we liked around half the dishes, didn't like the other half, but truly appreciated the nice, friendly service.

This place is a hidden gem. My wife and I were delighted to discover that the chef, a former Michelin star chef, chose to leave the star behind for a more tranquil environment, yet his food remains at the highest standard. You are essentially getting Michelin star quality in a relaxed, welcoming setting. It outshines any other place in Sarlat. Every dish is executed with superb quality, and the service is exceptional thanks to the perfect team of the chef in the kitchen and his wife looking after the front of the house. You can feel that both of them genuinely love what they do. We are so glad we stumbled upon this gem. It is now our go to spot in Sarlat.

An absolute gem. We had such a good dinner. The chef's wife was hosting and her service was perfect. The food is DELICIOUS! The magret de canard and the beef were just melting on our tongues- just perfectly cooked and soft as butter. From starters to desserts, we were delighted with everything we tasted.

On my last day in Sarlat, I found its best restaurant (so far). Clearly a cut above the rest. The degustation menu is very good value considering the wonderful quality and presentation of the dishes. The decor is modern and welcoming. The staff is exceptionally attentive and the Chef is a cracker. Booking well ahead of time is unsurprisingly essential. Thoroughly enjoyable dining experience. If you have reservations towards French coffee (like me), don't order it.

Frédéric, owner of the lovely B&B Le Temps Retrouvé just steps down the street from Le Grand Bleu recommended this restaurant. Perfection! Chef Maxime and wife Audrey are a perfect team. She receives customers, she serves, she watches over all with a superb professionalism and efficiency. Maxime, chef par excellence who is delightfully playful, leaves the kitchen to come by and assure all needs are met. Order the souffle!! The decor is lovely, the ambiance elegant but relaxed and welcoming, thanks to these two who truly make you feel at home.

We were staying at a b&b down the road from the Pech de Mallet and this restaurant was recommended to us for great authentic Perigord cooking. We had a wonderful dinner and wished we were in the area long enough to have a second meal there. The property has a little bit of a lost-in-time feel to it but the siting is superb with views of the distant cliffs from their terrace. We were there in rain so we ate indoors but I can imagine that it must be jammed during the warm summer months. Will manage to get back there, somehow.

We stumbled across this place in the pouring rain one evening in search of a bed and it was a good discovery. Everything was clean. Room was simply furnished, with en suite shower but shared loo in corridor - not ideal, but given the price and the fact we'd turned up on spec, no complaints. They have better accommodation, but all taken. Restaurant serves copious evening meals, with perhaps an emphasis on quantity over quality, and simple breakfasts of bread and spreads. Nice setting; relaxed atmosphere.

Although I have not stayed at the Pech de Malet I have eaten there on many occasions. It is a really good restaurant, in fact its outstanding. Wholesome food that is really well cooked. The service is second to none , really quick, atentive and jolly. Go and try it.

Excellent meal at a very reasonable price. Add to this the friendly service makes it a well recommended restaurant, you must however book and they speak English.

Sights & Landmarks
Château de Puymartin is an elegant building with a rich history dating back to the 13th century. Located in Dordogne, it offers a perfect blend of rural France's charm, exquisite cuisine, and fine wines. The region boasts scenic rivers, serene valleys, and enchanting forests that provide a tranquil escape from modern life.
A very different take on a traditional chateau experience. It is quite small but well worth a visit if you are in the area with some really interesting rooms and stories behind the building. For those with dogs, the website says small dogs allowed, which they are, but only if you carry them! One to be aware of in case your small dog is a little hefty like ours was 🤣

Lovely compact castle with nice views over the wooded valley. Friendly and informative gent at ticket office . The castle itself is very stylish and full of historic information and facts . A good variety of rooms and stairwells to explore. We really enjoyed our visit and took about two hours to complete the tour of Castle and Grounds

A very nice restored castle with information in French and English language. You can walk around the grounds too, expect a visit of 1,5 - 2 hours or max 1 hour if you are rushing. There is also a seating area outside with some limited food options. Entrance 10 euro per person and 5 euro for children aged 6-18, children under 6 are free. A recommendation if you are in the area.

Nice chateau. It's smaller than we expected. Good information in English. We were the only English in there following a large escorted tour in French, so we kept going ahead and moving back so we didn't interrupt their tour. We may have missed something but we didn't understand the significance of one whole room dedicated to Greek mythology. Interesting as it was we didn't see the relevance. Anyway we enjoyed the visit.
Carolyn D — Google review
A beautiful castle with a unique and imaginative approach to showcasing its rich heritage and history. The story of the castle is brought to life through a series of thoughtfully curated displays, each representing a different period in its long past. Several rooms are creatively reimagined, blending their original functions with artistic interpretations that add depth and intrigue. A highlight of the visit is the mythical Chamber of Artimus—an immersive and atmospheric experience that’s not to be missed.
Gerko J — Google review
A real disappointment that costs €11 per person where there are few interesting things to see, a mixture of period furniture, the family who apparently lives on site and the so-called mystery of "la Dame Blanche" for the idiots ! There are so many more beautiful castles in the region so avoid it !

Les Cabanes du Breuil is a historical site that showcases various farm implements, agricultural machines, photographs and films that reflect the way of life in the area. The stone buildings constructed without mortar are also on display, with related photos from around the world. Visitors can observe animals such as geese, chickens and sheep while appreciating modern farming practices that still honor their place in history.
A nicely laid out homage to dry stone building, particularly the local French variety. There are also some wonderful old farming machines on display and plenty of turkeys and geese running around.

Nice small interesting family run exhibition about these old stone built houses. Helpful leaflet in English. Friendly lady on reception Refreshments are good prices!
Peter H — Google review
The exhibited buildings, farm implements & agricultural machines along with the photographs, films and history were very explanatory of how life has been lived there, giving respectful attention to the parents and grandparents who worked so hard to renew the place. The instructional examples of how the stone buildings were made was very interesting to see, along with the related photos from many places in the world. Seeing the animals; the geese, chickens and ducklings, along with the sheep showed how people can continue to work hard at their modern farming life while showing their place in history. It is an inspiring place.

Cap Blanc rock shelter is a prehistoric site located 7 km from Les Eyzies, dating back to the Middle Magdalenian period around 14,000 years ago. The shelter features a remarkable sculpted frieze spanning 14 meters of wall, depicting horses, bison, and deer in low and high relief. Excavations in 1909 revealed cut flints and worked bones. Visitors find the tour guide informative and appreciate the different lighting options that enhance the experience.
An incredible place - it's a privilege to be able to visit it. Our guide was fantastic - she really brought the rock carvings to life and made the visit entertaining while also being very informative.

We had a very knowledgeable guide who made the experience much richer. Though you can see the main carvings easily enough there's much more there that the guide picked out for us.

The young French lady was excellent. Knowledgeable and with superb English she really brought it to life and pointed out things we would never have seen otherwise. Must pre-book, make haste because they're probably going to restrict access to this actual site.

This is a must of you're in France and appreciate archeology/ history. You get to stand very close to stone wall relief carvings that are approximately 15,000 years old-! It is an unexplainably wonderful experience that doesn't require a lot of time to tour. You will likely need to buy your ticket in advance as they were selling out days in advance when we were there in September. Also note, there are many different ancient caves/ areas to potentially tour, so investigate your options before you go. This one requires a little nature walk to get to the site, then the actual viewing area is one secured indoor room. You won't need any special gear or clothing to enjoy this tour.

Outstanding! If you're at all interested in our pre history this is a must. We had Pascal as our guide, can't praise him highly enough - such passion and knowledge about the carvings. So grateful to him for bringing it alive for us today. Photography of the carvings not allowed.

Manor Gisson offers a glimpse into the world of Sarlat's bourgeoisie from the 16th century. This historic monument, located in a preserved area of the city, provides insight into the private lives of the Gisson family, who held prestigious positions such as royal notary, lawyers, consulates, and knights. The manor's 15 rooms showcase original medieval architecture and beautiful interiors with no roped-off areas.

This is such a brilliant museum. It is in the mansion of the wealth Gisson family and gives a fascinating history from the medieval times until modern days. The rooms are wonderfully appointed with artifacts and clothes and the explanations fact sheet was great. Well worth the visit.

If you like to visit places that appear authentic then this manor does well. You need to climb up winding stone stairs but there’s a rail to hold on to and as I’ve a new hip, that helped me. The rooms are well set out and you wonder how they managed to get the heavy wooden furniture up! The kitchen has some interesting features and the attic where the stone roof is visible. As an old town house of some importance it’s a good place to visit with its regency musical background and we were surprised there weren’t more people there. It added to our stay in Sarlat.

Les Noyeraies du Lander is a working farm and mill that offers informative tours about the traditional artisanal production of walnuts using 19th century equipment. The tour includes a tasting of their superb products, and visitors have the opportunity to buy them as well. The farm also accommodates overnight stays for motorhome owners who are members of France Passion. Highly recommended visit for those interested in learning about handicrafts and traditional methods of production.
Great tour in English of the walnut orchards and the walnut oil production area, worth it for the 1905 vintage machinery alone. Free samples of walnut cakes, oil, wine and liqueur, chance to buy if you wish.

We enjoyed very much Paul’s tour (it was not in the schedule but he did it anyway, specially for just the two of us) and debrief on walnut harvest and processing techniques employed to produce walnut oil with a treadmill from the 70s, ending with a really good tasting. We learned a lot about this traditional way of making oil, far from industrial processing. The boutique is great, you can buy walnut and hazelnut oil, pates and dips, cakes, walnuts with shell, and many other local products. We tried their homemade cookies and tartlets, everything was delicious. I highly recommend a visit to this moulin, you won’t regret it.

Auberge Le Mirandol, located at 7 rue des Consuls, offers classic stews, tarts, and wines from the Dordogne Valley in a bistro setting with a natural cave. The restaurant features its own little Lascaux-type cave at the back of the dining room. The food is good and reasonably priced.
What a beautiful meal and excellent service. Definitely have to book. I had the duck breast and was quite a large meal and the duck was well cooked and melted in your mouth. Hubby had the vol-au-vent and is was delicious as well. Excellent and friendly service as well. Desserts were also really good.

A wonderful restaurant in the old town. The food is great and filled with regional produce. The staff are excellent and the building amazing. It even has its own natural cave. Only complaint is they charged €7 for a tonic ( no gin) A great place for a special meal.

Beautiful atmosphere and delicious food! The foie gras trio was a great choice and they fried one of the foie gras which was a fun addition to the appetizer. Of course the wine from the region is delicious and our main meal was crispy and paired nicely with the choice of wine. The kids enjoyed their meal and wanted more bites of everyone at the table!

Great meal after a long day of sightseeing. Started off with the pan fried fois gras in the mango sauce. Followed by the medallions of guinea fowl and the chocolate cake. The meal was excellent, perfectly cooked, and delicious. They recommended an excellent wine to pair with it and the overall cost of the meal was worth it. Don't miss the secret cave in back!

My wife, Lynn, and I have been staying in Sarlat for the past week and are so glad we found this restaurant. We had one of the best meals here since our arrival in town. We were warmly greeted, and although we had no reservation, we were seated immediately at a charming table. The staff were friendly, professional and very patient with our “restaurant French.” We ordered the Coq au Vin Maison and the Truite (trout) du Perigord du sauce du Chef. McDonald's is a well-known fast-food chain famous for its burgers and fries. Despite some mixed reviews, it offers a classic menu with options like the MC Chicken with avocado. The restaurant provides a clean environment and table service in some locations, making it a more civilized experience, especially in France. While there may be occasional issues with cleanliness or slow service, many customers appreciate the friendly staff and overall design of the restaurants.
It's just a bit more civilised in France when you go for a Mac. Table service, reusable cups, and fries containers.

✨️Small Burgers – Big Price, Tiny Bite✨️ As someone who’s grown up with McDonald’s as the go-to for a quick, satisfying meal, it's hard not to notice a recent trend: burgers that keep shrinking, while prices keep climbing. Size Matters (And These Burgers Miss the Mark) Ordering a Big Mac or Cheeseburger used to feel like you were getting value for money. These days? The patties are noticeably thinner, the buns smaller, and the overall portion feels more like a snack than a meal. Especially when you're paying premium prices for what seems like miniature burgers. It’s almost comical—like ordering a “meal” and receiving something that could fit in the palm of your hand. Menus That Don’t Match the Price Tag The menu prices have crept up significantly over the years, and yet the portion sizes have done the opposite. A “Value Meal” feels less like a value and more like a high-priced combo of modest food. For the same price, local gourmet burger joints now offer fresher, heartier options. Taste Still Delivers – Barely To be fair, the signature McDonald's taste is still there—nostalgic, salty, and satisfying… for about five bites. But when you’re done before you even feel like you started, the experience leaves you more disappointed than full. Verdict? McDonald's small burgers are tasty but underwhelming in size, especially given their increasingly high price. If you're hoping for a filling meal, you'd better double up or look elsewhere. McDonald's needs to find a better balance between price and portion if it wants to keep loyal customers satisfied. Rating: 2.5/5 – Good flavor, but poor value.🫠
T M — Google review
Food wait was approx 15m, very busy but should be able to cope with peaks, not only a long wait but the food was cold, this was an eat in order and still served cold. Finding it harder to get a decent experience from any McDonalds anywhere in UK or Europe, the efficiency and customer focus of Ray Kroc long forgotten.
Jason C — Google review
Whilst on holiday in the area last week we decided to enjoy a McDonald's for dinner. My fries were red hot, husbands were barely warm. He took them back and was treated quite rudely by a young lady. She refused to give him anymore fries but instead gave him his money back for the fries. For good customer service, offer your customer the choice of having a new portion of fries or their money back. The food was not the same quality as it is in the UK, for a big mac meal and a burger & fries from the saver menu it cost us £15. The food wasn't great, the service wasn't great and overall rather disappointing.

The Restaurant @ Hotel Le Meysset is fantastic. It's a relaxing environment in a beautiful setting and the staff are very professional and dedicated. I would definitely recommend a stay here!
Food paradise. We spent two nights in the hotel Meysset and I regret I didn't plan all my meals there, made reservation for one dinner only 😂 Fantastic cooking, great combination of flavours (without overdosing butter sauce;), extremely attentive, well trained service. And if that was not enough - epic views from the terrace. Unmatched quality that you cannot find neither in the town down the hill nor in the 200 km radius. Kudos to chef and whole team!

A lactose free meal was ordered. However, the potatoes were cooked in butter, and part of the dessert was ice cream. The starter was very basic listed as salmon, but you needed a magnifying glass to find it. The main dish was duck the toughest I have ever eaten. The second part of the dessert was fruit that consisted of a few cubes of roasted apple poneapple and orange. Certainly not worth the 27 euros charged, particularly if you are hungry.

This hotel/restaurant has a view on the valley. They welcomed us for a drink only. The view was lovely. Self-funded project: Midwives Around The World #AlamaCare #AntoineLphotos

(Translated by Google) We had a wonderful time and, above all, a great culinary experience. Food: 4.5/5. All the dishes were exquisite and very well presented. The only areas for improvement to merit a 5, in my opinion, are: the bread. It's a shame to offer such cuisine with basic breads, and the cookie ice cream must have been in the freezer for a while because you could feel the crystals in the center of the ice cream. Service: 5/5. Nothing to complain about. The server was pleasant, discreet, and explained each dish... Atmosphere: 5/5. Very pretty little setting with a magnificent view of the Sarlat hills. Quality/Price: 5/5. Such cuisine in the region at this price...

(Translated by Google) We had dinner at this restaurant. We chose the Truffle menu. Every dish on the €70 five-course truffle menu was delicious and beautifully presented. The service was impeccable. We were there in the winter and in the evening, so there wasn't a great view, but in the summer the view must be magnificent. (Original) Nous avons dîner dans ce restaurant. Nous y étions en hiver et de soir donc pas de belle vue, mais en été la vue doit être magnifique.

(Translated by Google) The place is nice and has a nice view. The plates are beautifully presented and the service is quality. However, the truffle menu is extremely disappointing. I didn't taste the truffle once during the entire meal. Of course, there are slats for decoration, but they are tasteless. When you can buy commercially available truffle salt or oil that perfumes a dish with just a few drops, it would be high time to add some to your dishes. This would avoid feeling a sense of deception. If I had to rate only the truffle menu, I would only give one star. However, the servers were very pleasant and it is obvious that the cooks are experienced, although not lucky enough to work with quality produce.

Lacombe Michel Ferme Auberge offers delicious homemade meals served generously at affordable prices. Visitors can expect a warm and friendly welcome, making for a delightful dining experience.
Excellent homemade food in this very quaint farm restaurant. Everything was absolutely delicious here, with generous portions and locally sourced products. The foie gras was to die for! Everyone was also very friendly and accommodating. It is recommended to book in advance as the place can get quite busy. We will definitely come back during our next trip to Dordogne.

For the price, amazing quality and friendly service. We both had the €25 menu and weren't disappointed. The confit duck and Tarte au noix were excellent.

Hearty home cooking and everything revolves around the ducks. Whether as confit, rillette, pate or as margaret - ducks are the focus. The lunch menu comes in several variations - but duck is always included. Even on the children's menu. Craft beer on tap goes almost better with it than wine. Very warm atmosphere.

Do not visit there. We arrived soon after 12:00 on 9 September 2022, looking to have a "good local lunch" this place is supposed to be famous for. We were two persons with a toddler and clearly required at least a basic level of service. Instead, we had to wait for five minutes while the water (man in his 30s I think) did his best to ignore us or look irritated when we spoke to him (perhaps it was the English language?) After that time had elapsed, he spat out a single "tarde..." and called up an older woman, who, upon hearing our request for lunch, told that everything was "reserved". Personally, I deeply doubt that was the case, since about half of their tables was not even prepared. She promptly disappeared, and that was about all the communication with the staff. I can't remember being so badly served, not in the hundreds of restaurants I have visited to date. Ignore this place and continue to anywhere else in the area.

Absolument parfait ! The food, the service - we couldn't be happier with our lunch! Order whatever you like - everything is delicious (although, personally, I'm partial to the salade de cabécou and the confit de canard). However, whatever you do, don't leave without ordering the creme brulee ! You won't find better anywhere, ever! C'est merveilleux !

This small family run restaurant serves the best traditional food around these parts and I highly recommend it - opening hours vary towards the end of the season so it's best to reserve

Almost missed it driving by, but we were hungry and turned around. Great that we did. Lovely garden environment, great food and reasonable prices, what more could you want?
