Tojinbo, located in Fukui Prefecture, is a captivating destination known for its dramatic cliffs that overlook the Sea of Japan. This ancient and rugged location offers visitors a chance to explore attractions such as the dynamic columnar cliffs of Tojinbo, Maruoka Castle, and Mikuni Minato. The coastal basalt cliffs of Tojinbo stretch over one kilometer and have been formed by the relentless erosion of the sea.
Probably a must-visit! Went there at mid August and the weather was perfectly fine with breeze. The scene was just awe-inspiring and a nice place to just take a rest and enjoy the scenery.

We visited on 8.4.2025, where cherry blossoms peaked. There wasn’t a lot of crashing waves but the views were excellent as it was a sunny day. It is a 30 minute drive from Fukui city centre. Nearby there are a few restaurants but a handful were closed on our visit. The cruise gave a whole new perspective on the columns and we sure did enjoy our time here.

Tojinbo Cliffs, Fukui|A Stunning Coastal Wonder of Japan Located in Sakai City, Fukui Prefecture, Tojinbo is one of Japan’s most breathtaking natural landscapes. These rugged cliffs stretch for about 1 km along the Sea of Japan and are famous for their dramatic rock formations and powerful waves crashing below. Often featured in Japanese crime dramas, the sheer scale and natural force of Tojinbo leave a lasting impression on all who visit. ◆ Top Highlights of Tojinbo ■ Cliffside Viewpoints The uniquely shaped columnar joint rock formations are a rare geological feature. From the top of the cliffs, especially near the “Oike” (Great Basin) area, enjoy a jaw-dropping panoramic view of the Sea of Japan. ■ Senjojiki Area Get close to the sea by climbing down to the rock-covered shoreline. You can walk across the natural stone slabs and feel the power of the ocean up close. ■ Sunset Spot Tojinbo is one of the best places in Japan to watch the sun set into the ocean. Each season offers a different and unforgettable view—perfect for photography lovers. ■ Tojinbo Shopping Street Right near the cliffs, this charming street is lined with souvenir shops and local food stalls. Enjoy fresh Echizen crab, sweet shrimp skewers, and other regional delicacies. ■ Tojinbo Sightseeing Boat Take a cruise along the base of the cliffs to see Tojinbo from a whole new perspective. The boat ride offers stunning views not visible from land. ◆ The Legend Behind the Name “Tojinbo” is named after a monk from the Heian period who, according to legend, was pushed off the cliffs due to a romantic dispute. It’s said that the sea raged for 49 days after his fall. ◆ What Visitors Are Saying “A thrilling experience with an amazing view of the Sea of Japan.” “Watching the sunset here was a once-in-a-lifetime moment.” “Great food and fun souvenir shopping at the nearby street.” “The boat cruise gave us a completely new angle of this natural wonder!” #Tojinbo #TojinboSnap #FukuiJapan #FukuiTravel #JapanScenery #CliffView #SunsetSpot #SeaOfJapan #EchizenCrab #StreetFoodJapan #NatureLovers #TravelJapan #ExploreJapan #ReelsJapan Tojinbo is a must-visit destination in Fukui that combines natural beauty, local culture, and fascinating legends. If you're looking for a place with an incredible ocean view, high cliffs, and crystal-clear water, this is it. The landscape is beautiful, and there's even a street leading to the location with many shops and restaurants serving a wide variety of seafood. It's a great place to spend the day. The parking lot is large and spacious. There's also a boat tour where you can see the rocks up close.
Claudia M — Google review
Went here during Golden Week. There were so many people as it was a holiday, but it was a good experience. The weather was very good that day, making it even more picturuseque and good views from the cliff. For ¥500 you can also have a bird's eye view from the Tojinbo tower nearby. There's a couple of shops and restaurants leading up to the cliff. We ate some really good squid in one of them. I was hoping to buy some omiyage, but I didn't find any that was to my liking. It's about an 1hr from Fukui station. Use the echizen railway, ride until the last stop. Cross the road, there's a bus stop near the station, ride the local bus 1 stop for about 10 minutes, and voila, you're there.
Faith K — Google review
Beautiful and unique in view sea of Japan, but bit dangerous. Better to be carful on your foot steps. Not very far from Fukui city. Car park available around ¥500.
Chaminda M — Google review
An interesting place to visit but I wasn't that impressed. The cliff itself is very beautiful but quite small. Getting there from Fukui is not so easy by transportation. The restaurants and souvenir shops were a bit old fashioned.

Aquarium
Nature & Parks
Exhibit
Echizen Matsushima Aquarium is a small seaside aquarium in Fukui, Japan, offering various attractions such as touch pools, penguin and dolphin shows, and encounters with seals. Visitors can enjoy interacting with animals like turtles and dolphins. The staff's exceptional care for the animals is evident. While the aquarium may appear run-down due to its proximity to the ocean, it offers an enriching experience for families with opportunities to interact with marine life.
To get here, board the bus from Mikuni station. It's a relatively big area aquarium for an outskirt town. The place has a few buildings for different sea life. There's also a beautiful cliff view at the side of the place. For ¥2200 for adults, I would say it's worth the price for those who love marine animals.
Tan H — Google review
This is a small aquarium but with multiple different buildings. Entry fees are higher than average — 2200 yen for adults and half that for children. We went to see the dolphin show that lasted 15 minutes and was impressive. We went later in the day meaning there wasn’t a lot of people. Some exhibits allowed you to touch the fish, such as octopus, or let you feed them. There is a free parking lots available on site, or by bus can get you off nearby.
Lucas L — Google review
Pro tip: Make sure to buy your tickets in advance to get a 500 yen discount! The aquarium is relatively small, but I easily spent 2 hours here. They have turtles, dolphins, penguins, and many more! I especially loved the penguin area, as well as walking into the room with the tortoise enjoying himself. The staff was exceptional; you can see they take good care of their animals.

Assalamualaikum brother. This place located in Fukui Japan. There are many attractions that you can watch in this place. Dolphins attractions was amazing. The parking area is free. The entrance fee was about 2,200¥ for adult and 1,600 for elementary and Junior high school students. Recommended for your family.
Asrul S — Google review
It is a great place for kids. Loads to do, not so much watching but interacting with animals and I touching them etc. I suspect it isn't very ethical like many japanese aquariums and zoos but I didn't get the impression it was overly cruel.
Tim M — Google review
It's a small town aquarium. I can't speak on how animal treatment. Every country has different standards, it is what it is. I can only say the people that worked there seemed like they genuinely cared. It is kinda run down but literally right next to the ocean. It's going to erode faster. If you're in the area I think it's worth a visit.
Sam — Google review
Aquarium located near Tojinbo, where we find a range of very interesting fish species. There is a show with dolphins at specific times. I found the entrance fee a bit expensive, 2000 yen per person, but, on the other hand, parking is free.
Gustavo S — Google review
Awful aquarium, small dirty tanks, animal welfare not a priority. I visited this aquarium today after visiting Oshima (which was great). This place literally made me cry. The tanks are way too small, most of them are filthy, and dont have plants, rocks, or anything to improve the environment. They have a huge sunfish in a small tank, the water is not clear and there is nothing inside. Its like they decided to reuse an old swimming pool or something. There was a big octopus in a tank almost the same size as itself, in the "touch tank" area, with no staff to supervise. The largest tanks were overcrowded, and some fish looked sick. One giant ray looked terrible, and kept swimming to the top and free falling to crash on the ground. I will certainly never come back here and i advise you not to come either. I dont know how anyone can visit this place and leave with a smile.

Shibamasa World is a family-friendly park and campsite located near Sakai City, offering a variety of attractions for both adults and children. The park features extreme water slides, kids' pools, a roller coaster, golf courses, go carts, and green lawns. Visitors can enjoy activities such as playing in the wave pool by the sea or exploring the Amazon jungle forest indoor pool.
Even though its indoor activities only, at the time we visit on winter my kids always love the place from the 1st to 3rd floor of the building .

Fun, family-friendly water park. We went after 5 pm (early of August 2025), so we didn't have much time to play the attractions. But it was not a problem for us. Being at the beach pool during sunset was amazing. Unforgettable view. Notes: if you wear overall swimsuit, you will go very fast on slider, so be prepared! Review: - Caribbean Viking: okay - Caribbean beach pool: the view, especially during sunset, is AMAZING! Highly recommended! - The MONSTER SLIDER: really really fun! (costs additionally 500 yen per person) - Triple Swirl: personally did not enjoy it because the all-closed tube part made me feel uncomfortable and dizzy, but the no-roof part was fun! - Adventure Slider: enjoyable - Other sliders: it might seem simple, but it was really enjoyable!

For me it’s excellent place for a whole family to go. A bit expensive for a bungalow but we really enjoy the place we love it🥰 all the staff are so kind❣️

Too busy, every so often called pool closes for 15min, stupid. Waterside cost extra, and very long queues. Half of the rides closed. Avoid at all!!!
Romy E — Google review
A fun place with various attractions. The kids enjoyed the go carts and water slides. There's wide green lawns, which are a rarity in Japan. The golf courses are fun, but they are all min golf style. The wavel-less wave pool is still refreshing, but a bit of a disappointment. Good food choices at reasonable prices.
David M — Google review
Definitely buy your tickets before coming as the check in system is ridiculously slow. However, once your inside it's great fun for everyone. But, the food is overpriced and serves pretty much only typical fast sugary food along with sugary drinks. Waiting to go on the slides is heavy duty especially if it's sunny. There is still plenty to do if you don't want to wait. It's showing it's age now, but I'd go back when the chance arises again.

Fun place for all the family! Definitely cover up if you have fair skin—very easy to get sunburnt. The wave pool right by the sea was our favorite and our little one enjoyed the Amazon jungle forest indoor pool.

Fureai Park Sanrihama is a farmer's market that closes slightly early, so it's recommended to have dinner by 4 o'clock for the last order. The market offers a wide range of unique products from different regions. It's also an excellent place to purchase souvenirs such as locally made crafts and processed foods. Additionally, Mikuni Port is nearby, providing the opportunity to indulge in fresh sashimi meals for lunch at 11:00.

It also includes a science building, culture building, and local child hall as central facilities with various functions. I was expecting to pay but the entrance is free! There's an indoor and outdoor play area for children. There is a 0-6 years zone for young children inside with a small slide, cooking toys and padded area. The large field outside is great for children to run around and have fun. Really great place to bring children to burn energy.

Angel land Fukui is definitely a great place for kids to play and also for older people to experience and learn about the space. Seafood restaurant
Yamani Fishery offers delectable BBQ seafood that is both fresh and appetizing. The prices are fairly competitive, although the restaurant tends to get overcrowded. However, if you don't mind the limited seating options, it's definitely worth trying their local grilled seafood while on the go. Don't miss out on experiencing the remarkable flavors of Mikuniminato seafood and Echizen crab offered here.
We came here to try their infamous Snow Crab, also known as Echizen Gani, which is a seasonal seafood during winter. But this crab is really expensive despite that it was on season, so we ordered the cheapest available option, just to have a taste on it. The crab meat was sweet and very delicious. Their grilled squids was nice too. The atmosphere was very comfortable, and cozy, with Japanese style short table seating, where you have to take off your shoes to sit inside.

The restaurant is known for its expertise in prawns which are not only delicious but also remarkably sweet. Their set menus provide customers with the opportunity to enjoy a variety of dishes, including the scrumptious salted grilled fish.

I didn't originally know about this restaurant, but I was told about it by a sailor when I was on a sightseeing boat in Tojinbo. This store is located just 5 minutes from the boat pier. There is also a souvenir shop in front of this store. It's a store of the same series. I can't say that the food at this restaurant is cheap. However, if you are going to eat such fresh and delicious food, this price is reasonable. I was convinced only after I saw the taste. So I'm very satisfied After that, I went to a souvenir shop. At the souvenir shop, I bought various things such as snow crab and crab miso. However, the price was such that it was so cheap. (Translated by Google) It's a popular store with long lines. I like seafood bowls eaten at fish markets and port towns, so I ordered the seafood bowl. The price is high at 2,860 yen including tax. The rice bowl is small for the price, and the amount of rice is small, which is not enough for men. Perhaps it's because it's a tourist destination near the hot spring town and Tojinbo, but even though it's near a fishing port, the prices are set to appeal to tourists. Since it's near the fishing port, I was hoping for a large and reasonably priced seafood bowl, but I was disappointed. In terms of content, the seafood bowl and sashimi set meal is 1,800 yen (tax included) with a large serving of rice free of charge, and if it's more expensive at 2,000 yen (tax included), I think it's acceptable. It's run directly by a fish shop and the food is good, but I don't think this is the place to go. If you go to Tsuruga or Fukui Central Market, you can find cheap and delicious restaurants.

Udon noodle restaurant
Moriyasu, a renowned soba eatery in Mikuni, attracts large crowds during holiday lunch hours. However, on this particular day, there was no queue and entry was effortless. The establishment is furnished with tatami mats and tables, exuding the ambiance of an esteemed soba joint. Their signature dishes include sauce katsudon, tempura bowl, and grated soba.

Super delicious soba with some healthy bite from the daikon oroshi. It has all the charm of a old traditional restaurant along with a casual vibe. The cozy interior quickly filled up. It seems to attract both tourists and locals, so I'm excited! While browsing the menu, I spotted the Sauce Katsudon (Pork Cutlet Bowl) 👀 I was so lucky, since I didn't think I'd be able to eat it on this trip. I ordered a set of grated radish soba and sauce katsudon 📢 While enjoying my hot soba tea, the long-awaited grated radish soba and sauce katsudon arrived 🥢 I excitedly opened the lid, and the delicious aroma of bonito flakes and the pungent scent of grated daikon radish wafted through the air. The freshly fried sauce katsudon also had an irresistible aroma of sauce! Let's eat! 👏 Starting with the soba noodles 🍜 With one bite, the tangy kick of the grated daikon radish hits me. The umami flavor of the dashi and bonito flakes hits you later, which is great. And the soba noodles themselves are amazing. The chewy soba noodles have a nice texture and go down smoothly. The aroma of the soba spreads as you chew, making it delicious. 😋 The aroma and spice of the grated daikon radish complement the rich flavor, making for a truly enjoyable dish. It's simple, but so delicious! I was also looking forward to the sauce katsudon. 🥢 Freshly fried pork cutlet on top of warm rice, with the sweet aroma of sauce - it's a winner... One bite and it was just as delicious as I imagined. 😋 The pork cutlet, smothered in a sweet sauce, pairs perfectly with the rice! I alternated between the rich and delicious sauce katsudon and the spicy grated daikon radish soba noodles, and finished it in no time. It was perfect for my tired body after a long drive. 😊 I had plans to eat a sauce katsudon elsewhere the next day, so I went for the egg katsudon. It had a sweet flavor, which I like. Looking back, I should have chosen the sauce katsudon. Regardless, it was delicious! They accept PayPay, but I wish they could accept more payment methods.

(Translated by Google) There are table seats and tatami rooms. Since I visited on a weekday before lunchtime, I was seated smoothly and without any wait. I ordered the "Burdock Tempura and Grated Daikon Soba." It didn't take long for my food to be served. First, the crispy burdock tempura was appetizing. It was thick and looked like it might be heavy on the stomach, but the slightly spicy grated daikon radish was an exquisite match. The soba was chewy and the broth was delicious, so much so that I could drink it all to the last drop (lol). One bowl was enough to satisfy me, but the flavor is enough to make me want to return. ♡ There are three parking spaces available. (Translated by Google) If you come to Fukui, you have to have Echizen soba!! So I searched and found this restaurant. They are famous for their spicy radish soba (is it their specialty?), so I ordered that, but unfortunately it was too spicy for me and I couldn't eat it. I've never eaten radish so spicy that it stung my tongue!! My companion said it was delicious and was smiling from ear to ear, but it was too painful for me and I couldn't finish it. I'll say it in my honor, but the soba itself was delicious. I think regular soba would have been just as delicious...what a shame (Original)

(Translated by Google) We waited in line for about an hour before eating. I walked around Mikuni town during that time, so it wasn't too bad. But the longer I waited, the more my expectations grew. The restaurant has a nostalgic feel and a nice atmosphere. Maybe it was just that day, but the tempura bowl broth was too thick, so I couldn't taste the soba noodles. It was right in the middle of a long weekend, and there were a lot of people there from outside the prefecture, so I thought maybe they were just too busy. It seems like ordering inside the restaurant is first come, first served. If you hesitate, the people who came later will finish their meal first 😅 (Original)

The shrimp, scallops, and squid were very tasty and had a great presence. The soba noodles were also delicious, with a rich flavor and a chewy texture. We finished off with some soba soup and finished the meal. Seafood restaurant
Echizen Kaninobou is a simple restaurant known for its seasonal crab menus, as well as offerings like abalone and sea urchins. While it's famous for its crab dishes, visitors have found that the sashimi and soba are of good quality even when crabs are not in season. The dining room offers a view of the seashore and the train station.
Excellent seafood. If you are an Uni fan you should definitely try it here. Everything fresh and with impeccable service. This place is only open for lunch with last order at 14:30.

We stopped at the restaurant around 5:45pm and I went in to check if it was opened for business as the town was quiet. A gentleman greeted me and advised that it’s not crab season yet so they served other sashimi dishes. He also suggested other cooked items for kids. We decided to try and was pleasantly surprised by the good quality of the sashimi and soba. Our dinning room window overlooks the seashore and the train station. We’ll definitely come back again and try their crabs!

Known for crab but honestly, anything here is a winner. I ended up getting the tekka-don (tuna rice bowl), ama-ebi (sweet shrimp sashimi) and a few other other things. Everything here is excellent and 10/10 would come here again. I loved it.

It takes a bit while to serve, but the food is worth waiting and the price. I’d recommend the sweet shrimp bowl (ama ebi don) and seafood bowl here, both very delicious and has a good volume.

Whenever you are during crab season, you should come to have a meal set. The fresh taste is only in crab. If you want to have a higher taste level, the vinegar will bring you to paradise. Really good crab meal, even it’s a little pricey. If you are deserved it, then treat yourself better. Cheers 🍻

Great lunch but an expensive one. Luckily non queue. The waitress was nice enought. The set lunch without crabs are reasonably priced and nice. However the crabs meals are Very expensive as compaured to famous market at Kanazawa central.

Oomiyatei is a popular soba noodle shop located in Tokushima prefecture, known for its delicious ramen and excellent customer service. The establishment is well-regarded among locals and visitors alike for their delectable sole food soba. With a cozy and inviting atmosphere, patrons can enjoy a private meal while being served by friendly young staff members who provide attentive service.
(Translated by Google) Located in Sakai City, Fukui Prefecture, you can enjoy soba noodles made with buckwheat grown in Maruoka, Fukui Prefecture. The parking lot and store were spacious, and I felt that the restaurant was well-loved by locals. It was around 11:30 on a weekday, but there were quite a few people inside. It was barrier-free, so I had the impression that it was easy to enter the store in a wheelchair. Bottled beer medium bottle 600 yen Grated burdock soba 1350 yen Both of us ordered burdock oroshi soba. Burdock tempura has plenty of burdock. The shrimp are also plump. I was very satisfied with the flavor of the soba and the grated radish. The menu item I was hesitant about until the very end was the grated sanmai. You can enjoy three types of grated soba: tempura grated, grated grated yam, and spicy grated. I want to try this the next time I visit. There is also a lunch menu limited to 50 meals. Tempura grated soba, mini cutlet bowl, mini salad The set is 1350 yen. Taniguchiya, which is famous for its deep-fried tofu, was closed on Tuesdays, so I had given up, but I was able to try Taniguchiya's deep-fried tofu at Omiya-tei. 750 yen It's my first time tasting it, but it's really delicious 😋 I'm addicted to deep-fried tofu. What makes buckwheat so fragrant is the size of the buckwheat seeds. Because Maruoka soba is small, it seems that it contains many delicious ingredients from the surrounding parts. Omiya-tei is particular about purchasing 100% Maruoka soba from contracted farmers in Yotsuyanagi, Maruoka Town, and from JA Hanasaki, so you can truly enjoy the taste of locally produced soba for local consumption. (Translated by Google) This soba restaurant is located just off the Maruoka Interchange on the Hokuriku Expressway. Its spacious parking lot, easy-to-enter interior, and easy-to-choose menu offer a family-style experience, making it a great place to enjoy Echizen soba, even though many soba restaurants tend to be finicky and privately run. The prices are also reasonably priced for a Fukui soba restaurant. The menu also includes Fukui's specialty, the sauce cutlet bowl. The 800 yen grated daikon radish soba is a different dish from the spicy grated daikon radish soba, but it still has a certain amount of spiciness, so be careful with children. Many restaurants near the Katsuyama Dinosaur Museum have incredibly long wait times, so I think it's a good idea to make the effort to come all the way here for a meal. (It's about a 25-minute drive from Katsuyama on the local roads.) I highly recommend it.

The interior of the store is glass-enclosed and bright and clean. There are already a few customers, so I wonder if it will get crowded soon? It was like that. I ordered a flavor comparison that comes with grated soup and regular soup. The soba noodles are 28, hard and delicious. It's not bad that the grated soup is dipping sauce instead of bukkake. What was disappointing was the tempura, which didn't feel very crispy. It was served so quickly, so maybe it was fried first? That's what I thought. They have a variety of menus, so it might be for the masses. (Translated by Google) I'm surprised everyone has rated it so highly. Honestly, both the soba and the sauce-cutlet were just average. But most of all, the service was so bad I couldn't even taste the food. I'm not sure if he's the longest-serving employee here or a senior employee, but he was at the cash register, so I know his name is on the receipt, but he was intimidating, even though he didn't do anything. When I asked if I wanted water, he pointed and said, "There!" When I hesitated about what to order, he got visibly annoyed, and when I asked, he seemed annoyed and refused to answer. I came from outside the prefecture to Fukui to eat soba, so this is a real shame. It seems like a mid- to high-end restaurant, and the restaurant is new and clean, but all the women outside are irritated, not just this guy. I went there on the recommendation of a kind local couple, but the service was so intimidating I couldn't even taste the food, and it made me feel uncomfortable. Fukui's grated daikon radish soba...I wanted to enjoy it. If you want a more relaxed dining experience, I think Yudetaro offers better tasting soba and better service. That's about it. 2024/08 Update During the Obon holidays, I headed to Nagano, near Niigata, to cool off and try some soba noodles (I love soba noodles). I was introduced to a soba restaurant in Nagano by a Niigata hot spring, and I went there! It's known for being a popular soba restaurant, but the flavor is said to be great, and it's delicious! I'll write more about it there! Soba lovers, please take a look!
