Toyako-cho

Toyako is a town on Japan’s Hokkaido Island. It’s known for the hot-springs resorts on the shores of volcanic Lake Tōya. Boats cruise to Oshima Island, in the center of the lake, where the Toyako Forest Museum documents the region’s biodiversity. South, a cable car runs to the top of the Mount Usu volcano, where an observation deck overlooks a crater. The Volcano Science Museum shows footage of previous eruptions.

Lake
Lake Tōya is a popular resort area known for its stunning caldera lake, which features picturesque islands and offers boat tours and hot-spring baths. The region also boasts a variety of dining options, including a renowned soba restaurant in the town of Toyako Onsen. Additionally, visitors can explore the Toya Caldera and Usu Volcano UNESCO Global Geopark, Japan's first registered geopark.
As per our tourist guide, lake Toya was formed by the eruption of Mt. It, and is the ninth largest lake in Japan in terms of area, and the third largest of the crater lakes. marathon has been held here since 1975, and every year many athletes run along the scenic lakeside course. indeed a great view despite the snow surrounding the lake. We had great lunch here, enjoyed curry rice☺️

Came here because the lake is the motif of Verity Lake in Pokémon series. The view is beautiful and it is worth taking the cruise to explore the lake. Note that the last ride (16:30) does not bring tourists to the island in the middle of the lake.
Eric C — Google review
A picturesque lake with many activities and sights along the shore. Tranquil and relaxing. You can drive around the lake. The southern end has a lot of accommodation and food options. The island in the centre: Nakajima, can be reached by ferry. The monthly fireworks display during summer another draw. In all, this place is definitely worth the trip from Sapporo.

Lake Tōya is one of the most beautiful lakes in Hokkaidō, surrounded by mountains and a peaceful natural atmosphere. The water is crystal clear, shimmering in shades of jade green and deep blue that look stunning in every season. Walking along the lakeside or taking a boat ride offers refreshing views that feel calming and unforgettable. The area is also known for its relaxing hot springs, perfect after a day of exploring. At night, the lake becomes even more magical with spectacular fireworks that light up the sky and reflect beautifully on the water. Overall, Lake Tōya is a perfect destination for both relaxation and breathtaking scenery, day and night.

Lake Tōya becomes the best destination for me in Hokkaido. All great scenery with quiet atmosphere. This time I just have a 1-day trip. But I suggest to have at least 1 night here with the travel route.

30/04/2025 Reached about 10.30am at Lake Toya. Took a bus from Toya station. The area was really quiet, with lots of shop closed. I going to assume it is due to Golden Week. Therefore, there wasn't really anything to do other than sightseeing. The wind was rather strong so the Swan boat was not available for rental. There a few free footbath onsen which was nice to have, not particularly hot but do remember to bring a small towel in adv so you can wipe your feet. Lots of tourist bus dropping by and going to the Nakajima island. I didn't venture far but I believe it is a good place to visit during late spring and early summer. The sky cleared mid afternoon and it was more pleasant. I was able to see a clear Mt Yotei and it was beautiful! I suggest staying at least a night here so that you can do more exploration. Mine was a day trip.

very peaceful and relaxing location. There is a cruise and swan boats for activities. Very fresh air

Went to Lake Toya for a day return trip. It’s very beautiful and there are some nice hotels there. The boat cruise on the lake is a must do activity. You can get off the boat at the central island, hike around for several hours and visit the natural museum there, before hopping on the next boat for the return trip. There is a firework show over the lake in the evening; but it was too late for my return train so I didn’t see it.

Mount Usu is an active volcano standing at 2,405 feet high and offers a pedestrian walkway to a lookout point with breathtaking views. It is located near the serene onsen town of Toyako Onsen, which boasts an abundance of hotels and traditional inns. Visitors can relax in geothermal pools while enjoying stunning views of Lake Toya. The area around Lake Toya features numerous hot spring facilities, making it one of the most extensive hot spring resorts in Hokkaido.
You can take ropeway to the top, cost about 2000yen per pax. The view from the top was superb. There are plenty of chairs for you to sit and enjoy the views.
Michael L — Google review
Great if you’re looking for a chill and slow hike. It’s costs ¥2000/person for a round trip ticket for the gondola. The gondola intervals are 15 minutes. You can also pay ¥1,100 for a one way trip a you can hike back down but it will be further away from the starting point/carpark. It’s also paid parking (we paid ¥500 - parked around 2pm), but when we got back to the carpark around 4pm - there were no more parking attendants, so maybe you can park for free after 4 but the last gondola leaves at 5.15pm so take note!

After all the great food in Hokkaido, it's good to take a day out for hiking around mount Usu, the active volcano at lake Toya. The walk usually is about half a day and if you are lucky, you can see steam coming out from the mountain. 🚶
张TakWAI — Google review
Even from far distance you can see the steam coming out from all direction at the Gunnima crater, it is a sight to behold. We went up by cable car so we only went half way down the trail as it leads to the sea side, which is the opposite side to Lake Toya. I suggest others to take the cable car up one way and hike down. Those stairs are relentless as you can see from the photos.
Carnivore H — Google review
The trail is a good hike, just be prepared for the parking costs and the buses of tourists in the autumn season. Hiking the other side of the mountains is also great and gives you a great chance to see the power of the 2000 earthquake on the houses and roads the passed through the area. There is free parking available on the western side.
Barry A — Google review
We've been here in mid-september 2017. We took the cable car to mount Usu and watched lake Toya and Showa-shinzan from the first viewing platform. From the second viewing platform you can see the summit of mount Usu. From there we took a short hike along the rim of the crater. The walk was absolutely beautiful and the smoking mounting is seen all along the way. From the end of the trail you can also see the stunning view of southern Hokkaido across the bay. Allocate 2-3 hours for the entire trip.
Eyal G — Google review
Amazing wide view on this top of mountain. You can rest, take a coffee and relax here.
Theera S — Google review
Scenic ropeway and clear beautiful view on top of Mount Usu, with a terrace facing Lake Toya to relax and appreciate nature. There’s a short walk around, but we did not go further down the boardwalk as it seemed slightly too far for us. Recommended to visit if around the Lake Toya area!

Shōwa-shinzan is a striking lava dome that rises majestically to 1,306 feet and is known for its captivating volcanic smoke. If you're planning a visit to this stunning area, it's easy to combine your trip with other nearby attractions like the Usuzan Ropeway. A short bus ride or rental car from the terminal will take you to both sites, which are conveniently located just 15 minutes apart.
A volcanic lava dome next to Mt. Usu. The peak is now 398meter and still actively smoking. This can be prove by no snow covered the peak as the surface are very hot, snow will melt and not stick on the surface. Had a nice lunch there and walking distance to Showa Shinzan bear ranch.

Lake Hill Farm is a picturesque destination in Hokkaido, particularly in the Toya area. The stunning scenery includes the majestic Mount Yotei as a backdrop and an array of adorable animals like rabbits, cows, sheep, and goats. Visitors can indulge in delicious gelato ice cream available in various flavors while taking in the breathtaking views. Additionally, the farm offers other dining options such as pizza and main courses to savor amidst the beautiful surroundings.
very pretty scenery, peaceful, and a great place to bring your family or just on a relaxing outing. all the milk products were amazingly creamy and rich! all the flavors are unique and worth a try. the cheesecake was decadent and the cream puff pastry was light while the cream was lightly sweetened. the farm also has a horse (not friendly), a goat (friendly and like taking photos), and bunnies and rabbits.
Hanna K — Google review
Walking across the gentle pasture toward the little cottage at Lake Hill Farm, you feel as though you’ve stepped into a pastoral postcard. The gelato counter inside smells faintly of fresh milk, and the cases are lined with rows of creamy delights — melon sorbet, rich chocolate, corn, pumpkin, and more. I opted for two scoops: the corn and rum raisin. The corn flavor was unexpectedly luscious — sweet but not cloying, with that fresh-field-kernel brightness — while the rum raisin paired dark notes of raisin with creamy indulgence. Each bite was velvety, cool, and pure. But the magic doesn’t stop there. Stepping outside, I strolled through flower beds and gazed at the fields and distant Mount Yōtei. The crisp air, the silence, and that ice cream in hand felt like time slowed down just for you. It’s not just dessert — it’s a moment to pause and savor Hokkaido’s gifts. In short: Lake Hill Farm’s ice cream is sublime — fresh, creamy, thoughtfully flavored, and enhanced by one of the most beautiful settings in Hokkaido. It’s absolutely worth a detour if you’re touring around Lake Toya.
Min M — Google review
Came day before and had ice cream. Very smooth and tasty. Creamy and milk based better. Chocolate ice cream nothing special. Environment is nice with beautiful grounds and view of Mt Yotei. Came today. Shop opens at 9am but all pastries not ready. Disappointed and had to settle for coffee, hot milk, pudding (nice) and one slice of cheese cake 🙁
Paul C — Google review
Very picturesque cafe. Ample parking. Personally didn’t like the gelato that much, and cone seemed cheap. The milk pie on the other hand was very good, excellent pastry. Nice flowers in front of the stores. A goat named Yuki and some sheep behind also provide good photo opportunities. Good place to stop by for a break.
Xunliang L — Google review
Lovely place to catch a glimpse of Mt Yotei. We visited during Oct 2025, and they had a sunflower field in the front. Recommended to try their local ice cream flavours like pumpkin, and also their pizza.
Serene L — Google review
Nice place to stop at for a quick bite. They have ice cream too but the weather was too cold for any of this. Milk pie is nicer compared to cream puff. Milk pudding is good too.
KahSeng T — Google review
This was near our hotel so we came for lunch and ice cream. The small restaurant serves up a limited choice of pizzas and there are also some desserts like cream puffs. The pizzas are average but the vegetable pizza is not to my liking. The cream puffs are good. The ice cream is sold next door to the restaurant and is very popular. There is a queue for the ice cream. There are quite a few flavours to choose from. The ice cream is really good. Outside there is a large empty field and there are some smiles Like rabbits and goats to look at not not much else. Families with kids can let them run around and the place provides some catching games to play with. Overall I recommend that you can pop by for the ice cream if nearby and enjoy a nice view while eating the de cream.

Nestled in a serene setting, The Windsor Hotel Toya Resort & Spa offers elegant accommodations with stunning views of Lake Toya and the bay. Guests can indulge in a variety of dining experiences at the resort's 12 restaurants, including a Japanese outlet of a renowned Michelin three-star restaurant from France. Surrounded by lush greenery, the resort features amenities such as a golf course, tennis courts, and Bloom Spa Toya offering hot spring baths and massage treatments.
We ended up at this hotel by chance as another hotel we booked in the area was well below expectations so needed to find somewhere else for that night. This hotel is is very unique in terms of location and appearance from the outside, and whilst I was sceptical the hotel was nothing short of amazing! The staff are incredibly helpful, the view from the rooms is out of this world. Whilst the rooms may be on the older side you wouldn’t know as they have been maintained extremely well. The breakfast at the French restaurant was exceptional best we had on our trip. Pizza at the Italian restaurant also well surpassed our expectations. Highly recommend this unique hotel.

Amazing hotel with beautiful design and a truly caring staff. They made our honeymoon extra special! Since Hokkaido is generally not vegan-friendly, I really appreciated that the chef went out of his way to prepare a thoughtful vegan breakfast just for me. Highly recommended!

The staff at this hotel are all so nice. I can’t pick out just one. Every single member of staff from the valet, to the housekeepers to the front of house to the porters were truly amazing and a real credit to the organisation. The view from the room is truly something out of a movie. The best hotel view i have ever seen. The cakes from the cafe are also really good. We rented a car and the valet were also really kind to us. I will definitely come back in the future in winter to see the view again in winter. Without a doubt the best hotel i have ever stayed in.

The Windsor Hotel Toya is a serene retreat perched above Lake Toya, offering breathtaking panoramic views of the lake and surrounding mountains. The moment you arrive, you feel a sense of calm and natural luxury — the scenery is truly unforgettable, especially at sunrise and sunset. The hotel blends refined hospitality with a peaceful resort atmosphere. Rooms are comfortable and spacious, many with sweeping lake views that make you want to slow down and simply enjoy the moment. Dining options are excellent, combining local Hokkaido flavors with elegant presentation, and service is warm, thoughtful, and attentive. Whether you are here for relaxation, gourmet dining, or to experience the beauty of nature, this is a destination where time feels slower and life feels beautifully quiet. A perfect escape for those seeking comfort, scenery, and a touch of classic Hokkaido elegance. Highly recommended for a memorable stay above the clouds.

Although the hotel is located quite far up on the hilltop, the stay was absolutely worth it. The car park is conveniently linked to the hotel, but unfortunately, there was no lift — so we had to carry our luggage up the stairs. When we first entered, the lobby area was peacefully quiet with no staff in sight. Due to a lack of clear signage, we couldn’t locate the lift tucked away in a corner and ended up climbing the long flight of stairs to the reception on Level 2 with our bags. Later, the staff kindly informed us that assistance could have been arranged — which we wished we had known earlier! Check-in was smooth and we were served a welcome drink, a lovely and thoughtful touch. The hotel facade is beautiful and majestic, almost like staying in a palace. Surrounded by scenic mountains and overlooking the tranquil Toya Lake, the cool weather added to the peaceful and calming atmosphere. We stayed in Room 547 with a lake view. By around 4:30 pm, the sky had already turned dark. Too tired to head out, we turned in early and were pleasantly surprised by fireworks at 8:45 pm. Although the display was a bit small and the lake area quite dark, it was still a nice treat that lasted around 15 minutes. For breakfast, we chose the Japanese set instead of the Western option. There were fewer guests in the Japanese restaurant, which made the experience calm and authentic. We truly enjoyed the beautifully presented traditional meal. Overall, our stay was pleasant and memorable. We would have loved to stay another night to experience more of the hotel’s facilities and surroundings. The staff were wonderfully friendly — from check-in to the restaurant team, and even those at the hotel entrance when we checked out. Tip for future guests: Unload your luggage at the hotel entrance before parking in the garage. This saves you from carrying bags up the stairs. It would also help if the hotel added clearer signage directing guests from the garage to the reception or stationed staff on Level 1 to assist arrivals. Alternatively, the hotel could monitor vehicles entering the car park via CCTV and proactively offer assistance to ensure a smoother check-in. Thank you, Windsor Hotel Toya Lake, for your excellent hospitality and stunning setting. I look forward to returning when the opportunity arises. 22.10.25

Platinum Elite, Owner, Ambassador, Lounge membership here. The hotel is simply gorgeous, elegant, and has lovely amenities. The view is spectacular, and ambiance is peaceful, and while the rooms have an “old feel,” they definitely feel taken care and not dated. The views from every window of this hotel are spectacular. The hotel also offers a free shuttle (reserve in advance) to pick up guests from Toya Station, make a stop at Toya Onsen, and finally take guests to the actual hotel. This shuttle runs multiple times daily at set times (but will not run for times that there are no requests). The Onsen (indoor & outdoor) is well taken care of, very clean, and peaceful. My only gripe is the hotel nickels and dimes. While my status was acknowledged and I my room was upgraded due to my status, the hotel offered little to no more perks for me as an employee and someone with so many food rewards in my wallet, as well as a lounge membership. Only 2 dining options offer the “half off” - the French restaurant and the western breakfast. And wherever you dine, you’re not eligible to use your food rewards, nor is there a lounge on the property. The food options themselves are exuberantly priced. I paid more for one dinner than my entire 2-night stay under the employee rate. I felt like my status was pretty much useless. Overall, this hotel is a worthwhile stay, especially for the view. I truly felt rested and relaxed being here and the staff was so attentive to me.

Good view on higher floor, good service. Facility is very old, air conditioner control is useless, room temperature does not change. No humidifier, asked for one, same model used in budget hotel is provided, makes loud noise throughout the night. Wifi is useless too.

The hotel is located on the top of the mountain. There is a lake view on one side and a sea view on the other. Extremely rare. The golf course is very beautiful. The design of the hotel lobby is very shocking. The unbeatable view windows in the guest room make people intoxicated.

Michel & Sébastien Bras TOYA Japan is a renowned restaurant listed in the Michelin Guide Hokkaido. It's advisable to make reservations in advance, as seats are often fully booked. We were able to eat at lunch on a Wednesday since it was during the golden week. I strongly recommend the taster course which is 18000JPY although you can order a la carte if you want to. We had the most amazing experience here! New years day, private dining. 5 course meal, carefully prepared with local ingredients and perfectly cooked. very pretty scenery, peaceful, and a great place to bring your family or just on a relaxing outing. all the milk products were amazingly creamy and rich! all the flavors are unique and worth a try. the cheesecake was decadent and the cream puff pastry was light while the cream was lightly sweetened. the farm also has a horse (not friendly), a goat (friendly and like taking photos), and bunnies and rabbits.

Lovely place to catch a glimpse of Mt Yotei. We visited during Oct 2025, and they had a sunflower field in the front. Recommended to try their local ice cream flavours like pumpkin, and also their pizza.

Nice place to stop at for a quick bite. They have ice cream too but the weather was too cold for any of this. Milk pie is nicer compared to cream puff. Milk pudding is good too.

Very good location with such beautiful views on top of a big grassy field with mountain at the background. Perfect place for kids fo roam around, and for adults to have some coffee and pastries and pizzas. Would recommend!
