We stopped by the Silo Observation Deck while driving around Lake Toya, and it turned out to be one of those unexpectedly pleasant breaks. The view was absolutely stunning—panoramic sights of Lake Toya, Mount Yotei, and the mountains beyond. It was quiet when we were there, which made it even more peaceful to just take in the scenery. There’s also a shopping area right by the deck that sells all kinds of local snacks and souvenirs. We picked up some treats to take home, and the kids had fun browsing the unique Hokkaido specialties on display. It felt more like a mini travel stop than just a viewpoint. Parking was super convenient—right in front of the building and free of charge. Everything was clean and accessible. We spent a good half hour here taking photos, exploring the shops, and just soaking in the fresh air. A really nice spot to stretch your legs, grab something local, and enjoy one of the best views in the area.
A great stop with a fantastic vantage point overlooking Lake Toya and Mount Yotei. The views are absolutely beautiful and well worth a photo stop. There’s also a souvenir shop with a nice selection of local snacks and yoghurt to try. Plenty of parking available — a convenient and scenic spot to take in the beauty of the area.
Gorgeous view of Lake Toya. Great stop with a big gift shop attached with restrooms and a restaurant upstairs. Unfortunately the restaurant was closed today (Mon 3 Nov 2025). The gift items are quite interesting, ranging from souvenirs to foodstuff and products like horse oil ointment. Outside this big building is a small quaint building with a soba shop ran by 1 man called Soba Lab. The chef is very meticulous in his cooking and the food is delicious. I had the mountain yam while hubby had the mushroom soba. Both were superb. There is also an option to take a helicopter ride to see the lake view but it too expensive for us. Although a good stop for photos and restrooms.
Sairo Observatory: Panoramic Perfection in Hokkaido If you're exploring the stunning landscapes of Hokkaido, Japan, a visit to the Sairo Observatory (サイロ展望台) is an absolute must-do. Perched strategically overlooking the serene Lake Toya, this observatory offers some of the most breathtaking panoramic views you'll ever witness. Getting There Located near the town of Toyako, the Sairo Observatory is easily accessible by car, making it a popular stop for those on a road trip around Hokkaido. There's ample parking available, so you won't have to worry about finding a spot. You'll often find tour buses here too, indicating its popularity as a key scenic spot. The Views That Will Mesmerize You From the moment you step out onto the observation deck, you're greeted with an expansive vista that will simply take your breath away. The shimmering Lake Toya stretches out before you, its deep blue waters reflecting the sky. In the middle of the lake, you'll see the distinct shapes of Nakajima Island, adding to the picturesque scenery. Beyond the lake, the majestic peaks of Mount Usu and Showa Shinzan rise dramatically, a testament to Hokkaido's volcanic activity. The contrast between the tranquil lake and the rugged mountains is truly captivating. Whether it's a clear, sunny day or a moody, misty one, the views are always spectacular and offer fantastic photo opportunities. More Than Just a Viewpoint While the views are undoubtedly the main attraction, Sairo Observatory also offers a few amenities that make your visit more enjoyable: * Souvenir Shop: There's a well-stocked souvenir shop where you can find local Hokkaido products, snacks, and, of course, items related to Lake Toya and its surroundings. It's a great place to pick up gifts or a memento of your trip. * Restaurant/Cafe: If you're feeling hungry or want to grab a coffee, there's a restaurant and cafe on-site. You can enjoy a meal or a hot drink while still taking in those incredible views, often from large windows designed to maximize the scenery. * Restrooms: Clean and well-maintained restrooms are available, which is always a welcome convenience, especially on longer road trips. Why You Should Visit Sairo Observatory is more than just a viewpoint; it's an experience. It offers a perfect blend of natural beauty and convenience. It's an ideal spot for: * Photographers: You'll be spoiled for choice with the stunning landscapes. * Nature Lovers: Immerse yourself in the vastness of Hokkaido's natural beauty. * Families: Easy access and amenities make it a comfortable stop for all ages. * Anyone looking for a moment of peace: The serene environment is perfect for reflection. Final Thoughts My visit to Sairo Observatory was a definite highlight of my Hokkaido trip. The sheer scale and beauty of the landscape from this vantage point are unforgettable. If you're anywhere near Lake Toya, make sure to carve out some time for this incredible spot. You won't regret it! Have you been to Sairo Observatory? What were your favorite views or memories? Share them in the comments below!
Nice view and a great spot to take photos. Helicopter is for hire too. There’s also a big souvenir shop in the area. Plenty parking spaces
Nice observation deck over lake Toya and the islands. You can find a big souvenir store next to it. I recommend continuing the road 2 min to the lake hill farm (ice creams+ flower fields)
Breathe taking views. But not too accessible by public transport. I rented a car and drove here. Had a picnic next to the lake, was wonderful experience.
Lovely viewpoint, though very crowded and our tour bus mostly used this to get commission from the gift shop. If driving independently, I would head straight for Lake Toya or a similar view at Usuzan Ropeway for a more relaxed experience.

This local town facility is a play on the road stations you find across Japan. It has all of the facilities of a road station, parking, toilets, cafe, gift shop and tourist information, it's just lake side. There is in and outdoor seating area with a small terrace on the second floor overlooking the lake. There is also a cafe. Across the street are various artisanal shops, including a bakery, cafe and local craft shop.
Nice stop to take a rest. There are small grocery store, restaurant, cafe, and restroom. Nice view of lake and the oldest tree in Hokkaido!
A nice little rest area if around lake toya. When I was cycling it was at the perfect spot to take a rest. I had the coffee and apple juice which were both good. They also sell local vegetables for cheap.
Fantastic little restaurant within the building which had a great menu with all the usual things at reasonable prices. Excellent place to stop and have a look through the local store as well.
Eating here right now. This food is absolutely delicious. Some of the best we’ve had in Japan. Plus the view is amazing.
We stopped by for some information and the Japanese lady at the store was very helpful. She speaks English and very kind. Impressive!!
This centre is made up of various shops. The supermarket opens quite early but the coffee shop does not open until 10am. Having said that, I have to give a special mention to this coffee shop as, even though they don't open till then, the lovely lady who was setting up for her day's trading made us coffee's at 8:45am after another lady (the supermarket vendor) translated for us and asked if she could make us a much needed morning coffee. So at 8:45am, we were able to sit on the balcony overlooking the lake, and enjoy our morning cuppa and the ambience of Lake Toya. I give this plus 5 stars simply for the friendliness and assistance that the vendors within the centre offered. Muchly appreciated!
Must try the sweet corn n the food store!! All staff are friendly n helpful!

Small museum featuring exhibits on Mt. Ursu's volcanic past & the history of the local lake.
Slide 1 of 8
The visitor center at Lake Toya is quite informative and interesting to explore. Entrance is free, but there's also a paid museum which we did not visit. It's worth checking out to gain some knowledge about the area. We spent about 30 minutes here but didn't fully read all the exhibits. On a Monday at noon, it wasn't very crowded, but it wasn't completely empty either.
We have definitely understand much more about volcano and the damage could be done when it explodes. It reminded us to think more about our environment and really respect those Japanese who have gone through those tough situation at that time.
Sought shelter from the heavy snowfall. Glad we did! The volcano museum is so well done. While just a small space, there's a good variety of exhibits from the 1977 Mt Usu eruption. Includes a simulation space experiencing the tremors leading up to the eruption. Ended with a 15min mini feature in a small cinema. The cinema shakes too! Entrance fees is 600 yen
30 mins in Volcano Science Museum learning past eruptions of the volcano, informative with VR technology and short 13 mins documentary.
The Lake Toya Visitor Center is large place. Entrance is free, but there's also a paid museum which I read provide some earthquake simulation. We were pressed for time so did not enter. The place is worth a short stop to gain some knowledge about the area and earthquakes in general. Great for a stop before going on your way.
Very small but pretty informative museum / introduction to the area. There's another paid portion of the museum where you'll learn about the volcano.
Nice free information center with a walk to a couple of the damaged areas of the last eruption. Optional paid volcano science museum. Worth a visit
Simple & pleasant visitor centre. We only have 15mins to spare here and it’s enough to enjoy the quick visit. It’s informative about the region & nature surrounding it. My favorite is the different tree trunks & cutouts of the region💕don’t forget to collect the stamp before leaving too.

Situated right at the coast, the rest stop boasts amazing views. It’s also known for its uni/sea urchin bento. There is no English menu, just point at pictures. The little shop also sells local seafood produce. The dining area is only for those who opt to have their food there, I highly recommend stopping here for a snack or small lunch to soak in the view from their dining room. Free flow tea and water available from their dispenser. Help to clear your plates by bringing your tray to the collection shelves. Trash is sorted by combustible/non-combustible, read the signs properly before disposing of your trash in their bins. No credit card payment available, cash only. Toilets were clean. Parking was easily available.
The special, uni don! If you're a fan of uni, sea urchin, then this is a must. It's a bit pricey but the portion is quite large, reportedly they recently increased the size. It was fresh and delicious, it was served with scallop miso soup and rice. Also had the scallop curry udon also very good. To top it off we had pumpkin and seasonal apple pie ice cream from a local creamery that is served at the Michi-no-eki. The store had a wonderful variety of local seasonal produce. Toilets/restrooms were clean. It was a busy place but didn't feel too crowded. We were on bicycles but noticed a huge lot with plenty of parking.
Even if you can't see it from Hakodate, you can already see the vastness of the ocean even in the distance!
Sea urchin was superb and it’s not expensive at all. We enjoyed the quiet time, the view and the food so much!
We wanted to try the highly rated sea urchins dish. However it turned out bad, maybe we just don't know how to appreciate it. Many locals went when we were there. There's also a shop selling local food.
Nice views. Pity the food store serving uni closes at 2pm
Great scenery great food. Quiet place as well to rest. Sausage is to die for. Ate the curry udon and udon, and ala carte scallops. All were on point. Got strawberries in the shop for dine in too. Is both a eatery and shop.
Stopped here for the uni don and bathroom break. Clean facility with a nice view of the fishing port.

Lovely place. Nice park, good scenery of the mountains and the Lake Toya. I enjoyed the short break here to take photos and appreciate nature! The cool air was so refreshing. Recommended!
It was a cloudy day when arrive and was rainy. The center of the lake was blocked by the low lying clouds. It was a nice place to walk and explore, theres even a board mentioning how the past earthquake damages the tiles on the floor. It is a good reminder of how much damage an earthquake can bring.
A very tranquil and well manicured park where you can walk for about 1km to 4km towards Gurrudo Sculpture park. Public free parking at entrance of park.
This park has an incredible array of fall colors to enjoy in late October. There are 3 major sculptures to visit and many more beautiful locations to take personal photographs with friends. Right now the kids playgrounds are all roped off and covered with tarps, probably to prevent the spread of corona. They didn't seem to be in bad condition. Also the garden area is also not in season for blooms, but the fall leaves are stunning all around and there are many benches under wisteria bushes that look really promising for the spring. The park is really easy to access and park at off of the highway, and you can see the mountains really well across the water. Really worth your time to stop and visit on your way in or out of town!
Lake Toya..just beautiful with nice cool autumn crisp air..
So this is part of Toya Lake offering the best views according to the sign and probably right, although there are rope ways and boat trips that I didn't go on. On the other side of Toya Station, check out the beach too.
The park is still closed for winter but reopens on April 20th. There is a viewing deck over the park that is currently open. In the park you can get a closer look at an old public bathhouse and public housing that was damaged in the 2000 eruption. There is a trail that goes via Yukun crater on up to the west crater. This looks super interesting and well worth the time.
A serene and tranquil nature spot for quiet walks and soaking in the beauty of the surrounding lake, islands and mountains in the distance. The occasional cloud blows in from the mountains and veils everything is a misty shroud before the sun breaks through again. Walking a little further along the park in the direction away from Toya Onsen brings you to a charming little island that is home to some ducks who launch into the water on your approach. The sound of birdsong and the lapping waves on the shores are lulling and relaxing.

(Translated by Google) I found a post on Google Maps that said [it is recommended to go from the south exit] because you have to make a U-turn and come back here instead of going around the circuit, so I decided to go from the south exit! I took my parents, who are 90 and 85 years old, so I went from the south exit and it was a great decision! Even though we started the tour from the south exit, the road from the kindergarten was quite an uphill climb, so it was not an easy road. We will continue with many breaks along the way! The road is very well maintained, so you won't have to climb over any big steps, so if you take your time, you'll be able to see the magnificence of the eruption. There was a lot of climbing on the way up, but after a U-turn, it was all downhill, so even my older parents were able to get down slowly! It's been 23 years since the eruption, but you can still see the severity of the eruption vividly, so if you have time, we highly recommend it!

(Translated by Google) After seeing the crater of Mt. Konpira, I took a stroll from the north exit. Perhaps the south exit would have been better. I decided to stroll around because I heard that the area still retains the same scenery from the 2000 eruption. However, it was very hot and tiring that day. However! Seeing the remains of the national highway, where lava flowed, fallen utility poles, road signs, and damage to a candy factory, cars, and kindergarten, I was convinced that nature has an undeniable power. Thinking back on that time is hard to put into words, but I heard that most people had evacuated... I imagine it must have been very difficult and painful. It reminded me that everyday life is not something to be taken for granted. A stroll from the south exit is a round trip. A stroll from the north exit is a round trip. There are all the things you can't see unless you stroll, so I have no regrets. There was an observation deck along the way, and the view of Uchiura Bay and Lake Toya from the observation deck was amazing. I imagine it must have been hard work for the people who prepared the area for strolling. Sneakers are a must! You can't afford to get injured while walking around and cause trouble for the Toya Fire Department. I think it's better to think of it as mountain climbing rather than a walk. I hope there won't be another eruption.

Many people enter from the north exit and turn around at the crater, but I think it's easier to enter from the south exit, go to the kindergarten, the candy factory ruins, and the crater, then turn around and go back down. You can see that there is more vegetation and buildings are more weathered than when I arrived in 2004. Bought the fire work viewing cruise voucher via kkday. Weather was good, we got to exchange the online vourchers for physical tickets at 7.30pm, boarded the boat at 8pm, set sail at 8.30pm. There’s a sign inside the boat for the direction of fireworks to look out for too. Simple fireworks but overall nice experience for our family😊
pretty nice boat ride - with good views of the mountains If coming during winter season, you’ll be treated to a view of a nice white snowy mountain. Along the dock there’s also a natural footpath you can try! Recommend!
Expensive at 1600 yen for the cruise. It’s quite short, at about 45 minutes end to end. There is a small shop inside the boat selling coffee, ice cream cones and and snacks. A lot of seagulls follow the boat, in the hope of getting some snacks from the passengers. They are quite aggressive, so be very careful. There are many levels in the boat to explore. The seating area in the main level has tables for eating and resting.
A good experience but hated the smoking ....issues ! Stinks ! Expensive ! Sceneries wise ....beautiful!! Do one in the day & one in the evening !
10/5/2025 - Riding a boat tour at Lake Toya - Scenary view is fantastic! This boat tour looks like a River Tour. The boat is old, but it is worth time for a tour! The narrator through speaks speaks three languages: English, Japanese and Chinese. Our tour guy, Jacky, is so friendly and knowledgeable.
They have coupons, but you HAVE TO print them out like we're in 90s still. I tried with it pulled on my phone and it didn't work. Use the ship fare coupon because the natural "museum" ticket price on the island is only ¥200. All the seats are in inconvenient places to see where the ship is going through the front of the ship because on the first floor there's a stage, so the chairs and tables are all pushed back. The second floor has the store in the area that would give the best view. I suggest pulling up a chair as close to the stage as possible and sitting there. I don't understand why Japanese people need smoking sections on the inside ON A BOAT! It doesn't move that fast! Sure it has a own door to the outside, but it's also connected to the inside through an open staircase. Y'all have a serious problem; I really hope the indoor smoking ban goes through! They have umbrellas you can borrow for waddling around the island which is nice.
Had a great cruise experience with this operator, nice boat and the guiding was delivered throughout the trip. Only unpleasant thing was that of the tourist groups... unstopped photographs, gulls feeding and loud chatting...
Ticket price a bit high. The price is partly for the fireworks at night. I went May and fireworks start at 8:45pm. I ride the boat to the Nakajima and hike around the island. The boat at night will ride along the lake from the west to the east. and firework follow around the boat. The view of firework from the lake is also beautiful. During evening ride, bring some bread or food for the seagull.

Very nice place💁🏻‍♂️
March 2024 Review: - Free museum about the G8 summit. - It’s quite interesting to learn how the event looked and was prepared - Took us 20min Recommended 👍🏻
For those passionate about protecting environment and G8 summit. The Mt Usu museum is more interesting. With hands on interaction able to touch different types of rocks found near Mt Usu. Also boast a showcase of beautiful scenery photography.
It is good to visit on a rainy day. I learned something new 😌
The majority of this museum is dedicated to the G8 summit which was held here roughly a decade ago. Personally I have no interest in politics but there is a nice section dedicated to the volcanic eruptions which occurred in the area in the past century.

It was a quiet and nice stop. They sell fresh produce which we can not buy but we can try their scallop udon
I drove 8 hours to get here in order to get the gacha pin. On google, it says it closes at 5 pm. I arrived at 4:10 pm, only to find it was already closed (as per the handwritten sign on the door). Please know that many people who come here use google.
A pitstop before we check into our BNB. View is nice and sells some souvenir. Has a cafe and restaurants there too
We stumbled across this stop randomly - had a great view of the mountain and lake on opposite sides. Had a cute farm shop with pictures of the farmers. Didn't eat here though.
Great karaage ( fired Japanese chicken ) good for a quick stop over to refill for snack and food !
Fresh local vegetables can buy there asparagus, potatoes, spinach or zucchini in the summertime. In the afternoon, not that much vegetable left so, reccomend you get to there in the morning or noon.
Just a quick toilet break along our journey to Sapporo. Convenient for tourist bus to drop passengers and walking distance to the toilet specially winter time.

We visited in winter, and unlike most lakes, the water wasn’t frozen. Its unique grey color, combined with the stunning view of Mount Yotei, made the scenery unforgettable. My husband and I took a relaxing walk along the lake, it was one of our best experiences in Japan!
A nice promenade with a very wide cobblestone walking path and nice views of the crater lake. There are a few sculptures to be seen, as you walk from one end to another. Pleasant walk. I saw some men preparing the fireworks for the evening’s show.
We visited on Oct 4, 2024.
It may be better if visit there during summer time. I was there in April, there was still quite low temperature. Not that suitable for walking but driving from spot to spot to take photos.
Went here during the last winter, it's a really good spot overlooking Lake Toya
Full blooming of cherry blossom
sculptures are limited, but it has a very good view of lake toya and mount yotei
Came here to see the fireworks 🎆 at night at 8:45pm.

The remains trail is quite short tho interesting. If you continue to go up you can see the craters and also amazing views of the lake, even without going directly to the paid observatory. Pay attention that the trail closes at 16:00, so plan enough time to go out and back
The first part of the walking path is an interesting paved walkway around the ruined buildings from the disaster, and it contains informational placards. The second part transitions quickly from a chill walk to an actual, muddy hike, which guide materials did not prepare us for.
Interesting, unique walking trail. Its creepy, sad but interesting to see the remaining/abandoned building, road, part of the bridge, etc. Its remind us to be humble to the power of mother earth/nature. There is no fee but recommended that you donate as you wish.
Interesting place where you can look at the damages the volcano caused last time. It is all real so it is worth the little walk. If you are up to see the crater there is also a trail that will lead you there
Definitely must see for those who like to see abandoned buildings etc. Not allowed to go in but can see pretty up close. Allow 20-30 min. Closes at 6pm. Also can go to nishiyana trail from here but will be longer.
Very interesting place to visit. Quiet, not many people go there. Great to see how they have put preventative measures in place for future disasters.
Interesting for a short quiet hike.
(Translated by Google) The Kinpira Disaster Relics Trail is short and in good condition. Along the way, buildings damaged by the 2000 eruption of Mt. Usu are preserved, including the old Yasuragi House and the old Sakuragaoka Community. The former is a business that opened a year before the eruption and was destroyed by the volcanic eruption. The mudslide at that time was more than one meter high. Please note that the trail will be closed at 4 pm. In addition, if you continue walking up the mountain on this trail, you will reach the Kinpira crater, where you can see a smaller crater lake. It is worth a visit, but the road condition is relatively primitive. It's really gorgeous, a raised temple overlooking Lake Toya. Visiting in autumn is really delightful, a must visit when in Lake Toya! You can easily spend about an hour plus here enjoying the sights.
Interesting geological feature with a signboard to explain the natural causes. There is an iconic shrine. You would have to navigate some stones to reach from the shore. There is parking just nearby. You will likely spend about 20 minutes here.
Unique. We visited during rain, we had the place to ourself. A short walk over step stones (inside the lake) to the temple.
Great view, serene, peace mind. Free parking. Free toilet.
incredible place and beautiful water. can swim at the beach at the park next to it
Not much to do in the area from what I could see. Would be a great picnic spot though! The setting is very calming and it wasn’t that busy on a Sunday in early spring after the snow had melted.
We came here in the first week of November and the weather is getting cooler. It was nice. This is the top sightseeing spot that we visited that day. The temple in the middle of the lake is very unique. And the autumn leaves and trees in the area had added accent to the lake and the temple. It was beautiful indeed.
The view is nice. U can have a clear view of the lake with the pagoda there. It’s windy so bring ur jacket. Might be able to see the swan there too ~ There’s a big car park next to it. So parking shouldn’t be an issue.

(Translated by Google) Abuta Shrine, located in Aoba-cho, Toyako Town. During the Edo period, Wada Mohei, a contractor for the Abuta site, was ordered by Matsumae Akihiro, lord of the Matsumae domain, to build a shrine dedicated to the spirit of Fushimi Inari Taisha. Following the Bunsei eruption of Mount Usu, the shrine was moved from Tokotan to Furenai, and then, with the opening of the railway in the Taisho period, it was moved to its current location. The JR Muroran Main Line runs directly in front of the shrine gate, and when I arrived, a train decorated with Ainu motifs passed right in front of me. Since it was a summer pilgrimage, the grounds were decked out in summer attire, creating a lovely atmosphere. There were quite a few worshippers. To the left of the main shrine building are Kotohira-gu Shrine and the entrance to the power spot, Ryuzan-do. After worshiping, I received a written summer pilgrimage goshuin at the shrine office. All goshuin are available for pre-written orders. Not only the goshuin, but the designs of the goshuin stamp books and votive plaques are also very cool. (Translated by Google) It's been about two years since my last visit! (Sorry for the late response.) The atmosphere was as solemn as before, and despite the hot weather, I could feel the cool, clear air! I also hiked the power spot, Ryuzan-do, and visited the Dragon's Jewel! A new shrine has been built there, and I felt even more power! However, it's been so long since my last visit that I forgot to bring the Musubi Stone next to the offering box (tears). Well, my purpose this time was to express my gratitude for all I've done, and the Dragon God is always watching over me, so I'm grateful for that alone! I'll definitely visit again!🙇 (Original)
(Translated by Google) I heard someone recommend Abuta Shrine, "If you like shrines, you should visit!" and so I decided to go. My impression can be summed up in one word: it's incredibly powerful! From the moment I passed through the torii gate until I left, I was immersed in the shrine's atmosphere. It felt so heavy, so stable, and like I was being enveloped in a warm embrace. After praying, I found the entrance to the Dragon Path on the left side of the shrine grounds. The Dragon Path is a 15-minute walk up the mountain path, stretching about 1 kilometer and including a steep incline, so I recommend wearing comfortable shoes. You can make a wish while walking, or enjoy the forest bathing experience to the fullest. At the top of the Dragon Path is the power spot "Dragon's Jewel" and bell. The amulets are reasonably priced. The shrine office is closed on some days, so if you want a goshuin or something, it's best to check beforehand. [A Mysterious Experience] I had tinnitus before going to the shrine, but it was completely cured by the time I left. After worshipping, my mind became calm.
(Translated by Google) I found the location using Google Maps. 😊 It's a shrine I've always wanted to visit, as it's said to be a power spot. 😊 There's no parking lot, but there were spaces for a few cars. 😊 I visited in June, and the weather was very nice and hot, so the climb up to the Dragon's Jewel was quite challenging. 😅 But the views I saw along the way were so beautiful and relaxing. 😊 There was a magnificent torii gate, and the chozuya (water purification fountain) was beautifully decorated, so I was able to pray in a pleasant atmosphere. 😊 I could see Lake Toya and the ocean along the way, so it was a great drive.

Climbing the stairs, you'll find a large torii gate. - A straight approach leads from the first torii gate, revealing the third torii gate. It's a large torii gate. It's quite a magnificent shrine. - Beyond the beautiful vermilion torii gate, there are more stairs leading to the shrine grounds. - Next to the third torii gate at the bottom of the stairs is a water basin. It's a flower water basin decorated with colorful umbrellas. It's almost off-season for worship in Hokkaido, but this shrine is full of heartfelt devotion. - This shrine observes closed days. Yesterday and today were closed days, so the gift shop was also closed. Perhaps it's a modern work style reform... - Climbing the stairs, you'll find the main shrine building. The full view of the main shrine building isn't shown in the photo, but it has a dignified appearance. - The interior of the main shrine building is covered with tatami mats. It seems like it would be nice to pray on newer tatami mats. -Two mikoshi (portable shrines) were stored in the mikoshi hall. Judging from the size of the shrine, it looks like they parade through the town in a grand manner during the annual festival. -After praying, I went to the shrine office, where pre-written goshuin (stamps) were left there as the shrine was closed today. There was a monthly goshuin (stamps) for November and a collaboration goshuin with Toyoura Shrine that is only available in Shimotsuki. Since it was so rare, I decided to get the collaboration goshuin for cat pilgrimage. When combined with the Toyoura Shrine goshuin, the cat pilgrimage is complete, and the left half is Abuta Shrine. The goshuin, modestly stamped in the palm of the cat's paw, cost 500 yen, so I made an offering. -When combined with the Toyoura Shrine goshuin, the picture looks like this. -This shrine is quite unique, as it has set days off. However, the shrine seems to be actively engaged in activities, with well-thought-out systems for disseminating information and attracting visitors. It seems important to preserve culture and tradition while adapting them for modern times. Toyako is a town on Japan’s Hokkaido Island. It’s known for the hot-springs resorts on the shores of volcanic Lake Tōya. Boats cruise to Oshima Island, in the center of the lake, where the Toyako Forest Museum documents the region’s biodiversity. South, a cable car runs to the top of the Mount Usu volcano, where an observation deck overlooks a crater. The Volcano Science Museum shows footage of previous eruptions.
