Xi'an

Xi’an is a large city and capital of Shaanxi Province in central China. Once known as Chang’an (Eternal Peace), it marks the Silk Road’s eastern end and was home to the Zhou, Qin, Han and Tang dynasties' ruling houses. At archaeological sites in Xi’an’s surrounding plains are the famed Bingmayong (Terra Cotta Army), thousands of life-size, hand-molded figures buried with China’s first emperor, Qin Shi Huang.

Historic Sites
The Giant Wild Goose Pagoda, also known as Big Wild Goose Pagoda, is a renowned attraction in Xi'an, China. Dating back to the 7th century during the Tang Dynasty, this brick pagoda was initially constructed with five stories to house Buddhist scriptures and figurines brought from India. Renovated during the Ming Dynasty, it now stands at a height of 64 meters and serves as a well-preserved religious site for Buddhists.
It's located at the end of the walking street I took. I was very late in the evening so I just looked at the pagoda from the outside. The street was super crowded although it was midnight. People cosplay in traditional clothes everywhere and they looked beautiful. It was a historical place and a very important part of the history and the culture.

Must visit Xi'An tourist site, its a historically significant Temple with ancient Pagoda. Temple is very clean, well maintained, beautiful with flowers and landscaped gardens. People are polite and good mannered, some old men playing Chinese chess inside. Enjoyed the atmosphere, found peace and tranquility. I could stay in this temple and enjoy the peaceful atmosphere for hours. When the sun goes down, just outside the temple is the Tang Everbright City! its basically Larger than Singapore's orchard road, a huge shopping district! Many souvenir shops and cafes! and also luxury SPA / Massage for your tired feet. if you want to enjoy this place, just book your hotel here, all the big brand hotels are located here, its prime spot.

The Giant Wild Goose Pagoda, or Dayanta, is truly an unmissable experience that provides a sense of history even deeper than the City Wall. This monumental seven-story structure, housed within the Da Ci’en Temple complex, is not just architecture; it is the physical symbol of the Tang Dynasty's golden age and the legendary journey of the monk Xuanzang. Built in 652 AD, the pagoda was designed to safely store the hundreds of Buddhist scriptures (sutras) and relics Xuanzang brought back from his seventeen-year pilgrimage to India, along the ancient Silk Road. It's my buckle list to be able to visit this pagoda, a testament to profound religious devotion and monumental early Chinese engineering, having survived numerous earthquakes over the centuries. The Pagoda sits within the tranquil and beautifully maintained grounds of the Da Ci’en Temple. Do take time to wander the halls, appreciate the stone steles engraved with historical texts (including two featuring writings by Emperor Taizong and Gaozong), and observe the traditional rituals still practiced here. If you can stay till evening, the fountain show at the North Square is massive. It's a musical fountain display, set against the backdrop of the gloriously illuminated pagoda, is absolutely spectacular. It’s a wonderful fusion of classical Chinese music, light, and water (check for seasonal showtimes; they are often held around 8:30 PM/9:00 PM). My getting to the Pagoda is exceptionally easy compared to other sites. Took Xi'an Metro Line 3 or 4 directly to Dayanta Station (Giant Wild Goose Pagoda Station). I Use Exit B, and follow the signs—you'll reach the North Square in just a few minutes.

Climb worth it for exercise and view. Don't photo budda remember. It's a working temple. Great to see the connection between India and China here. Tranquil courtyard

A Buddhist pagoda in the center of Xi'an with unique and characteristic buildings. A must-see. You can climb to the top of the pagoda and observe the old city from above.
Edoardo C — Google review
Wonderful place with lots of history. Other than the pagoda itself, which requires a separate ticket to enter, there is an area with lots of restaurants and snacks, as well as temples and artifacts to see. The complete works of Tripitaka Master Xuanzang are on display - a must see! Can easily spend a few hours here.

One of the richest Buddha place. The tower had been built in 652 in lesser than a year. The tower is leaning around 95m towards one side. The entrance to the the tower is not included in the park ticket.

We paid the 10Yuan to gain access to the grounds of the Wild Goose Pagoda and we were very happy with our decision. There’s so much to walk and explore on the grounds around the pagoda, and depending on the time of year, you could see the 50 varieties of peonies blooming (mid April to mid May). We didn’t pay the additional cost to also get inside the actual pagoda because we needed to get back to meet our tour group.

History museum
Museums
Shaanxi History Museum, located near the Giant Wild Goose Pagoda, is a large museum housed in a traditional Tang-style building. It boasts over 370,000 cultural relics dating back over 1 million years to the late Qing dynasty. The museum holds various exhibitions and also features Chinese and foreign classic paintings, calligraphy works, children's paintings, photography, sculpture works, film and television media art.
One of the best museum that I have visited in my life, we have booked the ticket in advance from trip.com it’s easy just passport to show. A lot of history showcasing, for me it’s good to visit before going to Emperor Qinshihuang’s mausoleum, you will understand piece by piece.
Dia W — Google review
Great collections of few dynasties over thousands years ago! A little crowded to really appreciate these amazing collections. Definitely worth the visit but make sure to pre-booked the ticket online prior to avoid disappointment.
David C — Google review
The place is strict with the admission timing. You will not be allowed to enter if you miss your slot. If you arrive early, join the snaking queue until the a lot starts. Takes about 20-30min before I can get in. Place is way overcrowded, as it’s jn the city and it’s FREE! Book early to get the ticket. Many of the exhibits in the museum are replicas. Make your own decision if you want to visit.
Too C — Google review
One of the most historic and beautiful museums I have ever set foot on in my life. The exterior and interior are equally beautiful, both showing the great historical culture of Xi-an and Chinese history. There are two floors and many rooms in the museum to store these delicate artifacts in the museum, each of these artifacts is magnificent, vibrating an ancient aroma that can bring the visitors to Ancient China, seeing how they lived and what they used back then. Through this museum, you can as if retrieve your footsteps and view the development of China and see its history with your own eyes, immensely increasing your own historical knowledge about the place. What a beautiful museum! Also the sensation of just seeing the photos online in comparison to seeing them in person are completely different.
Kunfu P — Google review
It is a great museum charting the history of Xi'An. Lots to see and it is free to enter if you are lucky enough to get one of the 12000 tickets issued every day. I have only rated 3 stars for the following reasons: The wait in line is around 1 and a half hours, if you get there early, if you arrive later in the day it can be much longer. The temperature in Xi'An is around 38 degrees c in the afternoon and it is not until you get closer to the museum entrance that some shade is provided, so bear that in mind when you visit. The museum was severely overcrowded, and this unfortunately spoilt the experience as viewing the displays was very difficult due to the sheer amount of people in the museum. There was a lot of pushing and shoving due to the lack of space around the exhibits. The museum staff were friendly and helpful.

This is a must-visit place in Xi An. It's free, but make sure to book your ticket in advance. Try to avoid the holiday season or weekends.
Vincy D — Google review
Virtually impossible to get in for a foreigner. Wechat reservation only in Chinese and days ahead possible. I am sure it's a great museum, which I will never see I my life.
Jan K — Google review
I cannot give a review of the museum as it’s impossible for foreigners or anyone without WeChat to get in. You need to book in advance but this is only possible through WeChat. I went to the ticket office only to be told it was sold out for 3 days. You must book in advance and you must have WeChat set up which is difficult for foreigners. Even with tickets people were queuing down the street, it appears to be a very busy and crowded museum, even on weekdays.

Xian's Ancient City Wall is a well-preserved historic site that offers scenic views and is popular for walking and bicycling. The city of Xian, though not one of China's largest, is a top tourist destination due to its rich historical monuments and ancient sites such as the Terracotta Warriors, Giant Wild Goose Pagoda, and the Ancient City Wall. Visitors can also explore the Shaanxi History Museum to delve into Chinese history.
One of the best restored Town Wall fro 16th Century. The wall is 14 km long and you can walk around the inner city in 3h or rent a bike.
Andreas W — Google review
13Km in length which is approx 3-5 hours to walk. Cycling will take 1 hour to go from South Gate to South Gate doing a loop. Tickets cost 50 RMB per person to enter the wall. It cost 100 RMB for bike deposit and 45 RMB for the bike rental. There are bike rental spots around the wall which can be seen on the images attached.
Sven A — Google review
Wow! This a city wall of epic proportions,it has 4 gates and is around 14km long. I think it is about 10-15 metres high and must be 10 metres wide. We visited early morning but it was pouring with rain, so we aborted and returned the next day, when the weather improved. There are many watchtowers on the wall and the North,South, East and West gates. The South gate is by far the most popular and crowded, we entered from the West gate and hired bicycles to ride the entire wall. If you are not feeling that ambitious, you can return the bicycles to any station and get your deposit refunded. If you cycle through the South gate, you must hand in your bicycle before you get to the gate and collect a new bicycle (no extra cost) from the other side of the gate to continue cycling. Great fun, but choose your bicycle carefully, get a comfy one because it's a bumpy ride!

Not too bad! my favourite part of xi'an for sure.. but thats not saying too much since im not quite fond of the city. The walls however offer a great perspective in the past, and its surreal how well its been preserved. definitely worth visiting, and a bike ride is offered on top aswell. Does require a ticket to get onto the wall
Max S — Google review
Highly recommended to visit the ancient wall, walk around or rent a bike. Don't forget to bring your passport in order to buy tickets if you are a foreign visitor
A B — Google review
I was a little surprised to find that you have to pay to access the city walls, but it makes sense — like any major tourist attraction, maintenance and preservation come at a cost. There’s quite a steep set of stairs to reach the wall, but once you’re up there, the scale is absolutely incredible. There are a few small shops along the way, but it’s mostly a place to enjoy a leisurely walk — or even explore by bike or another mode of transport. It’s a lovely spot to visit for an hour or so and take in the views.
V.patel — Google review
Nice to walk along the city walls. There was a light exhibit while we were there so it was so pretty with the lights and colors. We had a small inconvenience getting the pram for our kids up as there is no step free access.

Xi'an Muslim Dasi Residential Quarter, also known as Huimin Street or the Muslim Quarter, is located behind the Drum Tower and around the Great Mosque. This bustling area is a popular spot for souvenir shopping, with vendors initially quoting high prices. The quarter offers a vibrant atmosphere with colorful street food catering to various budgets and tastes. As you navigate through the lively streets, you'll encounter historical insights about the arrival of Muslims in Xi'an and their connection to the Silk Road.
This is food heaven. Reminder of the silk road influences in xi'an. Buzzing with life and experiences even if you don't eat but there is something for everyone here
Anil H — Google review
It's definitely worth a visit for first-timers, especially for Muslim tourists, considering that the Grand Mosque of Xi'an has a long history and the city is located along the Silk Road. Unfortunately, the food was below average in most cases—especially when compared to the food on Niujie Street in Beijing. Unlike in the north, the cuisine in Xi'an is mainly based on lamb, which tends to be greasy and lacks flavor, including the tasteless baked goods. That being said, I would still recommend people visit and check out jade, accessories and the local food stalls—there’s always a chance to find something you enjoy, and the overall cultural experience is well worth it.
E D — Google review
The Xi'an Muslim Quarter is more than just a street, it is the city's Hui Muslim community and a crucial piece of the Silk Road's legacy. Located immediately north of the Drum Tower, this residential quarter offers a complete sensory immersion, providing a stark contrast to the quiet serenity of the nearby Great Mosque. Evening visit is recommended to immerse into the perfect cultural companion must-visit piece to the Great Mosque. It's where you see the community that has sustained this blend of Chinese and Islamic culture for over a thousand years.
David L — Google review
One of the most iconic spot to visit in Xian is absolutely the Muslim Quarter or Huimin street. This vibrant and bustling area is known for its rich blend of culture, history, and especially food. Stretching through several streets near the Drum Tower, the Muslim Quarter is packed with local vendors and restaurants offering a wide array of popular Xi'an dishes. Main products include various noodles, Chinese burger, Cold plum juice – a refreshing local beverage, and several other snacks and juices. Many restaurants provide comfortable seating, and there are also public benches and seating areas scattered throughout the quarter. However, the street can become very crowded, especially in the evenings and on weekends, so expect a lively, energetic atmosphere. For Vegetarians: There are a few vegetarian-friendly options available, such as grilled vegetables, flatbreads, and some noodle dishes. However, cross-contamination with meat products is possible, so those with strict dietary requirements should inquire carefully or consider dining in restaurants that clearly label vegetarian items. For Muslim Travelers: Please note that not all food stalls are halal. Look for the halal sign, typically written in Chinese (清真).

Amazing area with excellent food and a great atmosphere. Biang biang noodles, the chinese burger, meat skewers, and pomegranate juice are a must try!
SAAD E — Google review
Experience the Xi'An cuisine. Shops on the main street sell the same thing. So better venture out a bit on the roads connecting the main street. A must visit if you are in the city. My suggestion is to walk from Drum Tower until the arch at the end of the street. Then venture to the left roads and you will find more varieties of cuisine. Halal? I guess but not 100% sure all halal. So I asked or buy from shop where ladies cover their heads.

The Great Mosque of Xi'an is a stunning architectural marvel built in 742, boasting vibrant and colorful designs along with serene gardens. The mosque stands as a symbol of the harmonious coexistence between Muslim and Han people in Xian. Surrounding the mosque, visitors can explore streets lined with various crafts and traditional Shaanxi handicrafts. Nearby, the Muslim Quarter offers an array of delectable Muslim cuisine, including roasted beef, fish, and pancakes at reasonable prices.
A Muslim pagoda in Xi'an that's a must-see. It's located in the center of the old city and is surrounded by a Muslim quarter filled with traditional restaurants and various stalls. It's wonderful to visit this place where you can taste typical food revisited with a Muslim twist, with unique aromas and flavors.

The Great Mosque of Xi’an - Tucked inside the lively Muslim Quarter, this mosque is unlike any other in the world. Built during the Tang dynasty and expanded over centuries, it’s one of China’s oldest and largest mosques, with more than 1,300 years of history. What makes it truly special? Its architecture — a graceful blend of Chinese pavilions, courtyards, and gardens, interwoven with Islamic calligraphy and motifs. From afar, it could be mistaken for a traditional Chinese temple, but step closer and the Arabic inscriptions remind you of its spiritual heart. It’s a place of calm and reflection, just steps away from the buzzing food stalls outside. A must-see for anyone who wants to experience Xi’an beyond the city walls and Terracotta Army. 👍👍👍
Mun W — Google review
The Great Mosque of Xi'an is one of the oldest and most renowned mosques in China, with a history dating back to the Tang Dynasty (around the 8th century). It is located in the heart of the bustling Muslim Quarter, and reaching it requires a walk through lively, narrow alleys filled with street food stalls and souvenir shops. Entry is free of charge for Muslims, many of whom perform prayers inside the mosque. There is also a wudoo (ablution) area available for worshippers. At the time of our visit, there was some renovation work. What makes this mosque truly fascinating is its unique architecture. The Great Mosque of Xi'an is a stunning example of Chinese-Islamic architectural fusion. Upon entering, you are greeted by a traditional Chinese courtyard layout, complete with wooden pavilions, stone archways, and serene gardens. Instead of domes and minarets, the structures resemble classical Chinese temples. However, Islamic elements are gracefully integrated through beautiful calligraphy in both Chinese and Old Khat Arabic, and inscriptions from the Qur’an can be seen throughout the complex. As with all places of worship, modest dress is required, and visitors are expected to behave respectfully. Non-Muslim visitors may not be allowed into the main prayer hall but can explore the rest of the mosque complex and appreciate its historical and architectural significance.
Amaal D — Google review
An amazing location. Smack in the middle of the Xi’an Muslim quarters, the mosque radiates serenity and calm. The garden was a sight to behold, a compulsory walk before you reach the prayer hall. The warm reception by the Muslim brothers is the cherry on top.

Most amazing place to visit in xi'an.place where one can see how a religious place completely mingled with another culture and art..unlike mosque all over the world has done minerates but this one is totally opposite it's more like a Chinese pagoda..beside this is 740ad which means Islam came to china much before any other places on earth..1200 years of pristine history preserved in all quarters of the mosque ..so many dinasty that preserved restored this place ..making it one of the most beautiful places to visit in china .

Location is wrong in google map. Search instead: Mosque 清真寺 Entrance is by going thru alley near Drum Tower. Worth going as it have big courtyard with old architectures building and fence. Not many people going here, so its not crowded. For prayer hall at the end of the courtyard can only be viewed from outside for non muslim, and muslim can enter during prayer time for pray. Entrance fee is 25 yuan

The Tang Dynasty, established in 1988, is a cultural treasure of Xi'an that attracts both locals and visitors. It stands out as the first establishment to showcase dance and music performances in the ancient Tang Dynasty style. This venue offers a unique experience with nightly dinner theater where guests can enjoy both food and performances, reminiscent of imperial palace luxury.
Watching the performance at the Tang Dynasty Theatre was like stepping into a piece of living history. The highlight of the evening was an exquisite dance performance featuring Empress Wu Zetian, capturing the elegance and grandeur of the Tang Dynasty. The performers were captivating, dressed in vibrant, intricate costumes that seemed to shimmer under the stage lights. Every move was graceful, evoking the poise and power of Empress Wu Zetian, one of China’s most iconic rulers. Adding to the experience was the dumpling buffet served throughout the evening. Each bite was delicious, with a variety of flavors that complemented the theatrical atmosphere perfectly. It was a unique experience, blending rich cultural heritage with culinary delights, and a must for anyone visiting who wants a taste of Tang Dynasty opulence.

The ticket costs RMB 268 if you buy over the counter. It is cheaper to buy online. However, after 5pm, the tickets will cost full price at RMB 268 even if you buy online. As a solo traveller, no one led me to a seat when I entered the hall. After sitting down, a tour guide told me to move to another table as she had 3 tables of guests. Priority was only given to tour groups and not based on a first come first served basis for solo customers. Seating was given based on a first come first served basis to tour groups as well. I had to ask 2 waitresses where I could sit down before I was shown a seat at the farthest corner of the hall. If we are all paying customers, why didn't anyone show me a seat, and even had to move me to the farthest corner of the seating area? The whole experience made me feel very unwelcome. It is very commercialised. I have a feeling that as I look Chinese and not a Westerner, I am given little priority. I was seated in a corner where there are only 2 Chinese tour guides sitting in the corner. And the waitress keeps putting the big plates of condiments like soya sauce at the corner table. So you know it is not an important table. The good comments on the performance definitely come from non-Chinese or those who do not watch Chinese dramas or have little contact with Chinese performances. Due to the comments, I paid a hefty price for it. The performance was so-so. I have seen better performances in Chinese dramas, and really exciting live performances in other parts of China. Some parts were boring and I almost fell asleep during those times. It is exorbitant by China standards. Only overseas visitors would pay for it. That is why there is no Chinese face there except for the tour guides and service staff. As what the China people say, 骗外国人的钱 bluff money from overseas people. It is a rip off. Even country / city grade performances promoted by the local governments are cheaper and of higher quality and better standard. The famous Director Zhang Yimou's team with Director Wang Chaoge also directed performances which are excellent and cheaper ie. the 《印象》and《又见》 series. This place is totally not worth your spending the money.

The food is decent, some great dumplings, some not so great, but you really come here for the performance. The show was great, though the live orchestra was not used for every song. The price is a tad expensive, there's definitely a "tourist tax" here.

Really fantastic. We just happened upon this place while walking by during the day, and decided to get tickets for dinner and show that evening. (The reservation staff has sufficient English to make this easy for American visitors.) The dumpling dinner had an amazing variety of offerings; everyone was delighted. The show was stunning; no mid-class dinner theater offering at all; this is a high-quality professional live song and dance show, with live orchestra. The lights and staging were super high-quality.

Overall the service was abysmal. First off, there was no host at the restaurant when we went, despite asking the workers there. Some staff flat out ignored us. Many of the tables were not cleaned up. Then when wait staff finally came over they seemed really blasé about serving us. The waitress seemed like she couldn't care less about our order. She kept looking away or walking away mid order, so we had to repeat ourselves. Half of the menu was indefinitely unavailable. Anything that looked complicated or fancy was not available. We finally found some food and they informed us later that a third of those were also unavailable. The food that we did get was pretty bad- ingredients didn't taste fresh and the spices and flavors tasted really off from what the dishes normally taste like. The worst dish we ordered was a vegetable dish. The veggies were soaked or somewhat boiled in a broth with pieces of ham sprinkled on top. The dumplings fillings were bland and the dumpling wrappers were not a great texture, they should be silky and pleasantly al dente with a bit of a bite to them, but the dough in these tasted dry and dull. I found a sizeable bone fragment in my dumpling filling. The cold jelly noodles not only were rather flavorless but also tasted extremely mushy. We were really surprised because the place seemed like it was a fancy/recognized restaurant from its long history in Xi'an, to the nice decor and professional looking uniforms, but unfortunately it really missed the mark. The waitstaff was unprofessional, the menu was extremely limited and fairly expensive, and the food we were served was barely edible. All in all, I think this place is one of the worst restaurants I've ever been to. On the bright side, I guess you can get a really nice view of the bell tower from the restaurant.

Hot pot restaurant
Haidilao Hot Pot is a popular dining spot in China, known for its exceptional service and thoughtful staff. Situated on the 4th floor of a nondescript building, this hot pot restaurant can get quite busy during holidays and weekends, with wait times of around half an hour. The establishment is highly automated, featuring efficient robot delivery of ingredients and dishes from the kitchen. Additionally, it's recommended to make reservations in advance due to potential long queues.
Excellent, Tablet menu in English, waitress was attentive and helpful. You can separate into 4 broths and they have vegetarian Broth. On 4th floor. Food is good and not expensive. They even gave us free fried milk. Looked like all locals dining. No wait because the place is huge

Shabu-shabu restaurant in Xi’an, a good place with really nice staffs. Located on 4th floor of the building. Recommend to try quality food, fresh fruits and anything you like. And you can ask for a staff who can speak English to help you to order.

Amazing experience at this place, the staff was gorgeous and the food nothing short of excellent. In 3 we spent less than 200 RMB (in total), astounding value for the price, I could not stand up after the amount of food I have eaten, something that normally happens only when me or my wife cooks, highly recommended! (to the franchise owners: have you considered expanding operations in Amsterdam?)

Great place for a group dinner. The concept is of Sichuan hot pot. The staff delivers a great service, with free fruits, apron to avoid staining your clothes. They will take time to explain what to do and how to cook your food. Really fun and very popular with locals.

Great place! Service was excellent. We had no idea how to order, so they walked us through the whole process, plenty of English speaking staff. Beware though, it can be INSANELY spicy!

Best hotpot I had in China. I couldn't handle most of hotpot in Sichuan (even though we always got "extra mild" haha) but this was just the enjoyable amount of spiciness! From the moment we entered the restaurant, we were treated with exceptional service until the moment we left. I was also blown away with the fruits and snacks, the nail salon that's free of charge before we got seated. For the actual hotpot, they have a huge selection and everything we've ordered was fresh and delicious - really hoping they open some chains in Canada soon! Highly recommend the beef, the shrimp paste and the hand pulled noodle. Also, if you're a group of two, you can just do one quarter broth (even though it looks tiny, things boil really fast).

Xi'an Roast Duck Shop is a hidden gem run by a friendly elderly couple. The roast duck is the star of the show here, with its crispy skin and succulent meat. For 69, you get a generous portion of duck served with cucumber, sauces, and pancakes. Many patrons also take home the duck rack to make delicious soup or pair it with hometown rice noodles for an exquisite meal.
Very good. Not quite like Beijing style but I would say it's better. They cut the duck and serve the meat with it rather than just the skin. A duck for ¥138 is probably about right for 4 people, nothing else needed even though it sounds strange to order one dish.

(Translated by Google) Recently, I really wanted to eat roast duck. I searched for reviews about this nearby restaurant and it was pretty good. It was also very close. I drove over here. It was indeed a good shop run by an old couple. They were outsiders and I couldn’t understand the dialect they spoke. I went there relatively late and there was almost no one around. The roast duck was very big and very Fat, but roasted very well, the skin is crispy and not greasy, 69 for one piece, including one cucumber, two sauces, and one pancake. We took the duck rack back to stew the soup, and the duck meat was cut very thin. There is no fat in the meat, so it is very delicious. The duck rack is stewed in soup and eaten with rice noodles from my hometown. It is simply delicious!
