Museums
Shaanxi History Museum, located near the Giant Wild Goose Pagoda, is a large museum housed in a traditional Tang-style building. It boasts over 370,000 cultural relics dating back over 1 million years to the late Qing dynasty. The museum holds various exhibitions and also features Chinese and foreign classic paintings, calligraphy works, children's paintings, photography, sculpture works, film and television media art.
One of the best museum that I have visited in my life, we have booked the ticket in advance from trip.com it’s easy just passport to show. A lot of history showcasing, for me it’s good to visit before going to Emperor Qinshihuang’s mausoleum, you will understand piece by piece.
Dia W — Google review
Great collections of few dynasties over thousands years ago! A little crowded to really appreciate these amazing collections. Definitely worth the visit but make sure to pre-booked the ticket online prior to avoid disappointment.
David C — Google review
The place is strict with the admission timing. You will not be allowed to enter if you miss your slot. If you arrive early, join the snaking queue until the a lot starts. Takes about 20-30min before I can get in. Place is way overcrowded, as it’s jn the city and it’s FREE! Book early to get the ticket. Many of the exhibits in the museum are replicas. Make your own decision if you want to visit.
Too C — Google review
One of the most historic and beautiful museums I have ever set foot on in my life. The exterior and interior are equally beautiful, both showing the great historical culture of Xi-an and Chinese history. There are two floors and many rooms in the museum to store these delicate artifacts in the museum, each of these artifacts is magnificent, vibrating an ancient aroma that can bring the visitors to Ancient China, seeing how they lived and what they used back then. Through this museum, you can as if retrieve your footsteps and view the development of China and see its history with your own eyes, immensely increasing your own historical knowledge about the place. What a beautiful museum! Also the sensation of just seeing the photos online in comparison to seeing them in person are completely different.
Kunfu P — Google review
It is a great museum charting the history of Xi'An. Lots to see and it is free to enter if you are lucky enough to get one of the 12000 tickets issued every day. I have only rated 3 stars for the following reasons: The wait in line is around 1 and a half hours, if you get there early, if you arrive later in the day it can be much longer. The temperature in Xi'An is around 38 degrees c in the afternoon and it is not until you get closer to the museum entrance that some shade is provided, so bear that in mind when you visit. The museum was severely overcrowded, and this unfortunately spoilt the experience as viewing the displays was very difficult due to the sheer amount of people in the museum. There was a lot of pushing and shoving due to the lack of space around the exhibits. The museum staff were friendly and helpful.
Trevor E — Google review
This is a must-visit place in Xi An. It's free, but make sure to book your ticket in advance. Try to avoid the holiday season or weekends.
Vincy D — Google review
Virtually impossible to get in for a foreigner. Wechat reservation only in Chinese and days ahead possible. I am sure it's a great museum, which I will never see I my life.
Jan K — Google review
I cannot give a review of the museum as it’s impossible for foreigners or anyone without WeChat to get in. You need to book in advance but this is only possible through WeChat. I went to the ticket office only to be told it was sold out for 3 days. You must book in advance and you must have WeChat set up which is difficult for foreigners. Even with tickets people were queuing down the street, it appears to be a very busy and crowded museum, even on weekdays.

The Giant Wild Goose Pagoda, also known as Big Wild Goose Pagoda, is a renowned attraction in Xi'an, China. Dating back to the 7th century during the Tang Dynasty, this brick pagoda was initially constructed with five stories to house Buddhist scriptures and figurines brought from India. Renovated during the Ming Dynasty, it now stands at a height of 64 meters and serves as a well-preserved religious site for Buddhists.
It's located at the end of the walking street I took. I was very late in the evening so I just looked at the pagoda from the outside. The street was super crowded although it was midnight. People cosplay in traditional clothes everywhere and they looked beautiful. It was a historical place and a very important part of the history and the culture.

Must visit Xi'An tourist site, its a historically significant Temple with ancient Pagoda. Temple is very clean, well maintained, beautiful with flowers and landscaped gardens. People are polite and good mannered, some old men playing Chinese chess inside. Enjoyed the atmosphere, found peace and tranquility. I could stay in this temple and enjoy the peaceful atmosphere for hours. When the sun goes down, just outside the temple is the Tang Everbright City! its basically Larger than Singapore's orchard road, a huge shopping district! Many souvenir shops and cafes! and also luxury SPA / Massage for your tired feet. if you want to enjoy this place, just book your hotel here, all the big brand hotels are located here, its prime spot.

The Giant Wild Goose Pagoda, or Dayanta, is truly an unmissable experience that provides a sense of history even deeper than the City Wall. This monumental seven-story structure, housed within the Da Ci’en Temple complex, is not just architecture; it is the physical symbol of the Tang Dynasty's golden age and the legendary journey of the monk Xuanzang. Built in 652 AD, the pagoda was designed to safely store the hundreds of Buddhist scriptures (sutras) and relics Xuanzang brought back from his seventeen-year pilgrimage to India, along the ancient Silk Road. It's my buckle list to be able to visit this pagoda, a testament to profound religious devotion and monumental early Chinese engineering, having survived numerous earthquakes over the centuries. The Pagoda sits within the tranquil and beautifully maintained grounds of the Da Ci’en Temple. Do take time to wander the halls, appreciate the stone steles engraved with historical texts (including two featuring writings by Emperor Taizong and Gaozong), and observe the traditional rituals still practiced here. If you can stay till evening, the fountain show at the North Square is massive. It's a musical fountain display, set against the backdrop of the gloriously illuminated pagoda, is absolutely spectacular. It’s a wonderful fusion of classical Chinese music, light, and water (check for seasonal showtimes; they are often held around 8:30 PM/9:00 PM). My getting to the Pagoda is exceptionally easy compared to other sites. Took Xi'an Metro Line 3 or 4 directly to Dayanta Station (Giant Wild Goose Pagoda Station). I Use Exit B, and follow the signs—you'll reach the North Square in just a few minutes.

Climb worth it for exercise and view. Don't photo budda remember. It's a working temple. Great to see the connection between India and China here. Tranquil courtyard

A Buddhist pagoda in the center of Xi'an with unique and characteristic buildings. A must-see. You can climb to the top of the pagoda and observe the old city from above.
Edoardo C — Google review
Wonderful place with lots of history. Other than the pagoda itself, which requires a separate ticket to enter, there is an area with lots of restaurants and snacks, as well as temples and artifacts to see. The complete works of Tripitaka Master Xuanzang are on display - a must see! Can easily spend a few hours here.
Snoopysnoops — Google review
One of the richest Buddha place. The tower had been built in 652 in lesser than a year. The tower is leaning around 95m towards one side. The entrance to the the tower is not included in the park ticket.
Andreas W — Google review
We paid the 10Yuan to gain access to the grounds of the Wild Goose Pagoda and we were very happy with our decision. There’s so much to walk and explore on the grounds around the pagoda, and depending on the time of year, you could see the 50 varieties of peonies blooming (mid April to mid May). We didn’t pay the additional cost to also get inside the actual pagoda because we needed to get back to meet our tour group.

3Ancient City Wall

Xian's Ancient City Wall is a well-preserved historic site that offers scenic views and is popular for walking and bicycling. The city of Xian, though not one of China's largest, is a top tourist destination due to its rich historical monuments and ancient sites such as the Terracotta Warriors, Giant Wild Goose Pagoda, and the Ancient City Wall. Visitors can also explore the Shaanxi History Museum to delve into Chinese history.
This ancient city wall was built about 1,500 years ago, has a total length of about 14 km and is about 12 m high. This is the most intact and best preserved ancient city wall in the world. The city wall is very thick and has many watchtowers, it can be said that the city wall protects Xi'an city from attacks. This is the capital of 13 Chinese emperors. You should visit the ancient city wall in the late afternoon when the weather is cool. Renting a bicycle (rental place on the city wall) and cycling on the city wall is a great experience. After cycling around the city, you can get off and eat at some local restaurants right at the foot of the city. Delicious food, enthusiastic service and very reasonable prices
Anh T — Google review
One of the best restored Town Wall fro 16th Century. The wall is 14 km long and you can walk around the inner city in 3h or rent a bike.
Andreas W — Google review
13Km in length which is approx 3-5 hours to walk. Cycling will take 1 hour to go from South Gate to South Gate doing a loop. Tickets cost 50 RMB per person to enter the wall. It cost 100 RMB for bike deposit and 45 RMB for the bike rental. There are bike rental spots around the wall which can be seen on the images attached.
Sven A — Google review
Wow! This a city wall of epic proportions,it has 4 gates and is around 14km long. I think it is about 10-15 metres high and must be 10 metres wide. We visited early morning but it was pouring with rain, so we aborted and returned the next day, when the weather improved. There are many watchtowers on the wall and the North,South, East and West gates. The South gate is by far the most popular and crowded, we entered from the West gate and hired bicycles to ride the entire wall. If you are not feeling that ambitious, you can return the bicycles to any station and get your deposit refunded. If you cycle through the South gate, you must hand in your bicycle before you get to the gate and collect a new bicycle (no extra cost) from the other side of the gate to continue cycling. Great fun, but choose your bicycle carefully, get a comfy one because it's a bumpy ride!
Dunders — Google review
A nice place to walk a bit around the city. Nice buildings on it with some fine detailed architecture. You can see some parks below the wall with locals doing all sorts of activities. A lovely place to hang about and have a gentle stroll. Very much recommended while you are in Xi'an.
Vijay J — Google review
Highly recommended to visit the ancient wall, walk around or rent a bike. Don't forget to bring your passport in order to buy tickets if you are a foreign visitor
A B — Google review
The Xi’an Ancient City Wall is one of the oldest, largest, and most complete city walls still standing in China. Originally built during the Ming Dynasty in the 14th century on the foundations of a Tang-era wall, it encircles the heart of old Xi’an. Stretching over 13.7 kilometers (8.5 miles), it offers a unique way to see the city from above and experience its historic defenses firsthand.
Andreas N — Google review
I was a little surprised to find that you have to pay to access the city walls, but it makes sense — like any major tourist attraction, maintenance and preservation come at a cost. There’s quite a steep set of stairs to reach the wall, but once you’re up there, the scale is absolutely incredible. There are a few small shops along the way, but it’s mostly a place to enjoy a leisurely walk — or even explore by bike or another mode of transport. It’s a lovely spot to visit for an hour or so and take in the views.

Banpo Museum is a fascinating destination that showcases objects from the Banpo archaeological site, revealing a 6,000-year-old civilization. Situated on the relics of Neolithic Yangshao culture, it offers an enriching experience for history enthusiasts. Visitors can easily access this museum by driving eastward for Lintong or taking City Bus U5 (306) from the railway station's east square.
6000 years ago... banpo village ruled by women. Quiet place. Not so many tourists. Very dusty. If you want to see actual village, skeletons, burial sites, earthen wears, etc. May finish in an hour or so.not as famous as the other sites in china. Worth to see past culture.
Sapat L — Google review
Worth visiting if you have already hit up the other big tourist attractions in the area. They have excavated a village from 6000 years ago. Lots of earthen jars used to bury children. The outside activities were all closed when we went (January).
Brandon S — Google review
Close to Subway Line 1 - Banpo Station (Exit A) If you have the time, this is an interesting place to vist. 6000 year old relics & remnants of a civilization is something you don't see every day. Original excavation sites makes this visit interesting. This place doesn't have the grander of the Terracotta Warriors, But it is fascinating in its own realm. Surrounding tall buildings makes you wonder (Whiskey Tango Foxtrot) the city planners were thinking when they allowed all the construction- makes you wonder how much history was destroyed. Not crowded during the visit; 55CNY entrance fee in October 2019.
Tom — Google review
Absolute gem. Tells you a lot about how the Neanderthals in Xi’an 6000 years ago lived and built their houses. It is also very accessible by the nearby Banpo metro station.
Kenneth C — Google review
A very historial place on human civilization 6000yrs history;recreated in details.worth a visit
Man K — Google review
I wouldn't go as far as saying "must see" but it isn't every day you see 6000 year old skeletons. Some of the museum buildings look run down and derelict but the main excavation site building is pretty incredible and the gallery has some interesting exhibits. I'd say go there if you have time!
Mark E — Google review
Awesome peace of art. Great creativity. Its a special treat for eyes. I like all the the designs put on display. Have many varities of restored sculptures from old culture. In first sight can't believe its restored. Very big place. Need at least 2 -3 hours to cover everything. Nice and helpful staff. Well maintained place. Nice infrastructure and management. Great place to learn about chinese culture and history. People should support such a great creativity. Thanks for the services.

Tang Paradise, completed in 2005, is the largest cultural theme park in Northwest China. It is a model imperial garden showcasing the charm and grandeur of the Tang Dynasty. The 165-acre site features replicas of Tang Dynasty buildings and twelve scenic regions including Ziyun Tower Block, Elegant Lady Area, Imperial Banquet Hall, and more. Located near the Big Wild Goose Pagoda, it offers magnificent imitations of Tang architecture and beautiful scenery illuminated at night.
This place is an absolute must visit! I used to be a tour guide at splendid China in Florida and this is very reminiscent of that park. That is long gone. The shows were really extraordinary. Awesome place if you’re into the old cultures.

A SCAM ! If you love plastic and fake sceneries this will be your paradise. 4 people at ticket desk but we had to do everything via alipay ... This ticket that is one of the most expensive in china just give you access to the park, all activities are extra in the park. Was attracted by the 5A which was also the case for Huaqing palace and terracotta army; maybe there should be a new type of grade cause in my opinion a 5C-.
Ct T — Google review
The name can be confusing. It is a beautifully manicured garden or park, with lakes, pavilions, bridges, and a palace holding nightly performance. It is very photogenic and one can easily spend a few hours relaxing there.

The Tang Paradise Theme Park is characterized by its portrayal of the prosperous Tang Dynasty, harmoniously blending Tang-style buildings, gardens and unparalleled cultural arts. Its layout is based on the design of the original royal garden of the Tang Dynasty. Highly recommend the outdoor live show🤩❤️
Black C — Google review
Perhaps it’s a tourist trap but it would be a pretty well done tourist trap. It does a pretty good job of recreating ancient historical sites and the entire place lights up at night with absolutely beautiful lights. It’s a 5A tourist attraction in china which means china regards this as one of the highest graded attractions in the country. Someone of something clearly spent a lot of money to make this a worthy place to visit.

If you think Datang Night City is crowded and want to have fewer people for photo shooting, this is definitely the place you should come. It has activities more or less just like the outside but with fewer crowds. I just had a photo session with my wife here. Small Wild Goose Pagoda is a must-see landmark in Xi'an, China. Dating back to the 8th century, it offers stunning views from the top and is surrounded by an adjacent park. The pagoda is part of the historical Jianfu Temple complex, which has been rebuilt during the Ming and Qing dynasties.
Wonderful place to visit with significant historical and cultural experience. This pagoda was built in the 7th century (1,300 years ago) - although the wild goose of legend actually fell out of the sky at the site of the Giant Wild Goose Pagoda. Entrance is free but you absolutely must book your trip here months in advance. For foreigners, your passport is your entrance ticket.

Small wild goose pagoda is a lovely place to visit while in Xi'an. It is popular with tourists. Has a history of Buddhism in China behind it. It is also a World Heritage Site. There is a big Pagoda in the city as well. Some very old trees are there in the park. You will see markings on the trees with their age. There is a massive bell in the centre of the park which you can ring for a price.
Vijay J — Google review
Love it, middle of the city, but still very bing and open place. Parked just in front. Super atmosphere, we picked mid level tickets, with a table - close to the scene. Had a drink, snacks and some fruits. Amazing interaction between spectators and performance artists. Good service, and unforgettable experience. You can call and make a reservation if this is last minute idea.
Piotr J — Google review
The smaller of the two Wild Goose pagodas in Xi'an, and a little worse for wear due to age and earthquakes ... but certainly impressive. Surrounded by a pleasant park which invites you to simply stroll around and enjoy different views. Or do a bit of bellringing for luck. Or shop for souvenirs. Relaxed atmosphere, and not quite as crowded as some other sights.

Wonderful park to walk around and take in the sights of the historical buildings, bell tower, and pagoda. Within the park is also the Xi’an Museum. Admission to the museum is free and displays many artifacts.

Very nice Pagode (705-7). The pagoda had been destroyed by an earthquake in 14th century. The basement was very strong

The building start to lights up around 6pm i think.. surrounding area is good for walking; they have trees lighted with poems, & fountain show with lights and music at the north square area which start around 7pm (need to secure spot early before it gets too crowded). Theres public toilet nearby the fountain show area

The Great Mosque of Xi'an is a stunning architectural marvel built in 742, boasting vibrant and colorful designs along with serene gardens. The mosque stands as a symbol of the harmonious coexistence between Muslim and Han people in Xian. Surrounding the mosque, visitors can explore streets lined with various crafts and traditional Shaanxi handicrafts. Nearby, the Muslim Quarter offers an array of delectable Muslim cuisine, including roasted beef, fish, and pancakes at reasonable prices.
A Muslim pagoda in Xi'an that's a must-see. It's located in the center of the old city and is surrounded by a Muslim quarter filled with traditional restaurants and various stalls. It's wonderful to visit this place where you can taste typical food revisited with a Muslim twist, with unique aromas and flavors.
Edoardo C — Google review
The Great Mosque of Xi’an - Tucked inside the lively Muslim Quarter, this mosque is unlike any other in the world. Built during the Tang dynasty and expanded over centuries, it’s one of China’s oldest and largest mosques, with more than 1,300 years of history. What makes it truly special? Its architecture — a graceful blend of Chinese pavilions, courtyards, and gardens, interwoven with Islamic calligraphy and motifs. From afar, it could be mistaken for a traditional Chinese temple, but step closer and the Arabic inscriptions remind you of its spiritual heart. It’s a place of calm and reflection, just steps away from the buzzing food stalls outside. A must-see for anyone who wants to experience Xi’an beyond the city walls and Terracotta Army. 👍👍👍
Mun W — Google review
The Great Mosque of Xi'an is one of the oldest and most renowned mosques in China, with a history dating back to the Tang Dynasty (around the 8th century). It is located in the heart of the bustling Muslim Quarter, and reaching it requires a walk through lively, narrow alleys filled with street food stalls and souvenir shops. Entry is free of charge for Muslims, many of whom perform prayers inside the mosque. There is also a wudoo (ablution) area available for worshippers. At the time of our visit, there was some renovation work. What makes this mosque truly fascinating is its unique architecture. The Great Mosque of Xi'an is a stunning example of Chinese-Islamic architectural fusion. Upon entering, you are greeted by a traditional Chinese courtyard layout, complete with wooden pavilions, stone archways, and serene gardens. Instead of domes and minarets, the structures resemble classical Chinese temples. However, Islamic elements are gracefully integrated through beautiful calligraphy in both Chinese and Old Khat Arabic, and inscriptions from the Qur’an can be seen throughout the complex. As with all places of worship, modest dress is required, and visitors are expected to behave respectfully. Non-Muslim visitors may not be allowed into the main prayer hall but can explore the rest of the mosque complex and appreciate its historical and architectural significance.
Amaal D — Google review
An amazing location. Smack in the middle of the Xi’an Muslim quarters, the mosque radiates serenity and calm. The garden was a sight to behold, a compulsory walk before you reach the prayer hall. The warm reception by the Muslim brothers is the cherry on top.
Azhar A — Google review

Location is wrong in google map. Search instead: Mosque 清真寺 Entrance is by going thru alley near Drum Tower. Worth going as it have big courtyard with old architectures building and fence. Not many people going here, so its not crowded. For prayer hall at the end of the courtyard can only be viewed from outside for non muslim, and muslim can enter during prayer time for pray. Entrance fee is 25 yuan

Really unique mosque, retaining it's Ming-era layout and several Ming monuments. Costs 25 yuan for entry, free for Muslims. There's some signage within, plus several exhibition rooms of Qing era furniture.

The Museum of Qin Terracotta Warriors and Horses West Gate is a significant part of the Emperor Qinshihuangs Mausoleum Site Museum, which includes the Qin Shihuang Mausoleum Relics Park and Lishan Garden. This museum showcases the world-renowned Terracotta Army, a UNESCO World Heritage site and one of China's national AAAAA level tourist attractions. The burial pit covers an extensive area of 2.
It’s been on my must visit places for years. And finally got to see it and it was stunning! The magnitude of the site and the 8000 status were incredible. Each soldier was uniquely carved and so human like. The rich culture and history behind the side and the discover of it all were unforgettable!

A must-visit landmark in Xi’an — the world-famous Terracotta Warriors site. You can easily take a Didi ride from downtown Xi’an for around 100 RMB. It’s highly recommended to book your entrance ticket in advance to avoid confusion at the gate, especially for foreign visitors. Official guides are available right at the entrance and can greatly enhance your visit with detailed historical explanations. Inside, you’ll find three main excavation pits open to visitors, along with a museum showcasing ancient weapons and artifacts discovered at the site. After finishing the tour, you’ll pass through a lively food street — perfect for lunch — before continuing to nearby Lishan Mountain, believed to be the actual tomb area of Emperor Qin Shi Huang. Plan about 1–2 hours for the visit. It’s an unforgettable experience that perfectly combines history, culture, and the legacy of China’s first emperor.

Visiting the Terracotta Army is one of the most impressive experiences in China. Seeing thousands of clay warriors — each with unique facial features and details — is absolutely breathtaking. The site is well organized, with clear signs and a smooth visitor route. It’s best to come early in the morning to avoid the big crowds. Tickets can be bought online, and there’s a free shuttle bus between the entrance and the main hall. You can also see exhibitions and reconstructions showing how the army was discovered. Overall, it’s a fascinating and unforgettable place — definitely worth visiting at least once in your lifetime.
Katarzyna — Google review
A must-visit historical site in China. The site is large and the actual museum is far from the ticket entrance, so advisable to buy the electric buggy tickets (additional cost per person) if travelling with seniors, kids or just unable to walk too far. Tickets can be purchased at the entrance but you will be hounded by tons of tour guides charging few hundred yuan to be your guide once inside. You can rent an English audio guide for 40yuan (if i remember correctly) after entering instead. After touring the 3 pits, you are forced to exit through a maze of restaurants and shops - another unnecessarily long walk. Once you finally reach the entrance again, you can queue up for a bus to take you 1.5km to the mausoleum site, where it is just a few more uncovered pits. This is another huge site, and you have to pay for another electric car buggy to bring you around because it is quite impossible to walk when you are already so tired! Once we got off the buggy at the first stop, we were told we must follow one direction (flow) from the first stop to the last stop and are not allowed to turn back if we missed anything. This was told to us in Chinese... so Im not sure if foreigners would have been informed of this seemingly important instruction. The actual tomb of the emperor is not yet open. So this site is really just giving some history of the site, some other uncovered pits featuring horses and bronze charriots, and a very large museum showcasing how they made the statues and figurines in the olden days. Overall, the site could have used a lot more signages to guide us in the right direction. Felt a bit annoyed having to pay for the electric buggy on top of the already expensive ticket fees at two sites.

Seeing these magnificent statues in person, after years of only encountering them in history books, was an absolutely unforgettable experience. This is a fantastic museum and an absolute must-see for anyone visiting the area. Truly a historical marvel! We were fortunate to have a fantastic tour guide who enhanced the visit immensely. She not only provided us with amazing historical facts but also entertained us with funny, relevant stories, making the experience both educational and highly engaging.

Amazing artwork eveywhere. The best place to buy clay soliders is in the back in a at shop that was kinda hidden from the front shops. They sell life size replicas and all the other smaller sizes. Skip the tourist shops at the front selling plastic. One shop owner even gave them me a pottery factory tour after buying a statue. Once in a lifetime experience . I loved it!
J J — Google review
A fantastic day! You will need at least 2.5hours inside the exhibition complex to absorb the wonder and glory of the terracotta warriors! The mausoleum is 50 mins away from the city centre - we took a didi and it was around USD15 one way. There are 3 pits to enjoy along with a host of displays, just like a museum. Food choices are plenty and toilets are aplenty
Jonathan N — Google review
I can honestly say that visiting the Terracotta Army was an overwhelming and deeply moving experience. The sheer scale of this place is something photos and documentaries simply cannot capture—you have to see it with your own eyes. I was utterly amazed and profoundly glad I made this trip; it truly is worth the once-in-a-lifetime effort. The Pit 1 (The Infantry): This is the main attraction and where the breathtaking scale hits you. Seeing thousands of life-sized soldiers, chariots, and horses lined up in ancient battle formation, guarding the First Emperor for over two millennia of the Qin Dynasty, is just jaw-dropping. I was amazed by the Bronze Chariots. The intricate detail and preservation of these half-scale pieces are often called the "Crown of Bronzes" for a reason. Warning: The site is huge and popular, so try to arrive early to beat the biggest crowds, I will recommend consider hiring an audio guide to truly appreciate the historical context.

Review of Xingqinggong Park, Xi’an — For History Lovers I spent an afternoon here with family and friends. My mother in law helped to build the park as an undergrad student so this place held special meaning. In the 1950s, Xi’an began rebuilding on the palace ruins. Xingqinggong Park opened in 1958, with a lake, reconstructed Tang-style pavilions, and landscaped gardens. The layout of today’s park still echoes the ancient blueprint. Xingqing Lake, for instance, lies where the Tang “Dragon Pool” once glistened. Though many structures are modern reconstructions, they are carefully designed in Tang style, offering a sense of the architecture and atmosphere that once stood here. For the history lover, these reconstructions are not mere imitations — they are interpretive bridges, helping us imagine the scale and beauty of the palace at its peak. Highlights for the Historically Curious • Xingqing Lake (兴庆湖) – The heart of the park, and a mirror to history. Imagine Tang courtiers drifting in boats here, or gazing across the same waters in the 8th century. • Chenxiang Pavilion (沉香亭) – A Tang-style reconstruction on an island in the lake. Its elevated view makes it easy to picture the ceremonial grandeur of the original palace. • Hua’e Xianghui Lou (花萼相辉楼) and Nanxun Ge (南薰阁) – Restored halls recalling the Tang architectural aesthetic, with sweeping eaves and symmetry. • Archaeological remains – Scattered within the park, subtle but meaningful. Foundations, layout traces, and interpretive plaques hint at the massive scale of the lost palace. Practical Tips • Best time to visit: Early morning or late afternoon, when the park is quieter and light softens the lake and pavilions. • How long to stay: Allow 2–3 hours if you want to explore both the reconstructed halls and the quieter paths, imagining the Tang palace in its heyday.

Xingqinggong Park, located in the historic city of Xi'an, offers visitors a serene and picturesque retreat steeped in rich history. Originally the site of an imperial palace during the Tang Dynasty, this park beautifully combines natural beauty with cultural heritage, making it a must-visit destination. As you enter the park, you're immediately transported away from the city's hustle and bustle into a tranquil oasis. The well-maintained paths invite you to wander and explore the diverse landscapes, from vibrant flower beds to expansive green lawns. The centerpiece of the park is a large, serene lake that reflects the sky above and the ancient-style pagodas surrounding it. It's common to see locals engaged in tai chi or families enjoying boat rides, which adds a lively yet peaceful atmosphere to the area. Cultural activities are abundant here. Traditional Chinese music often fills the air, played by elderly locals under shaded pavilions, providing a soothing soundtrack to your visit. Children play nearby, adding bursts of laughter to the mix. For history enthusiasts, numerous plaques and statues scattered throughout the park offer insights into its imperial past, enriching your understanding of Xi'an's significant role during the Tang Dynasty. Visiting Xingqinggong Park is not just about enjoying the natural beauty; it's an experience of connecting with the local culture and history. It’s a place where every corner offers a story, and the peaceful environment is perfect for those looking to relax and rejuvenate. Whether you are interested in the historical aspects, the natural settings, or simply a day out with family, Xingqinggong Park provides a charming and enriching environment for all visitors.

The elliptical pond's acoustics amplify whispers across 60m of water - likely used for secret diplomacy. Carp here are descendants of Tang imperial breeding stock, their scales still showing genetic gold pigmentation. The marble moon bridge has 21 steps matching the solar terms.

Daming Palace National Heritage Park is a vast archaeological site featuring the remains and reconstructed features of an imperial palace from the Tang Dynasty. Visitors can freely explore the park, square, and ancient palace gate dating back to 634 AD. The area offers open green spaces, a model of the palace, and occasional public performances at the IMAX theater.
Short tour inside not as much as other palaces in China but the building is humongous and gracefully beautiful right in front is an open park and back has train station. Not far from city center.
Hay M — Google review
A huge park that used to be the Daming Palace complex but since those ancient buildings are long gone, now is mainly a nice place to take a walk and feed the ducks. No need to go out of your way to visit this park but if you do come here, there are some nice trails but be prepared to walk considerable distances (or take the internal tram but don't expect it to be cheap). A walking circuit of the park will likely take at least 2 hours. Pro-Tip: There are some beautiful murals on the wall of Daming Palace Subway Station that give a feel of the Silk Road days gone by. Worth a look
Geoff — Google review
Frankly there’s not much to see here for tourists. I think they aim to develop this large area into a sort of Forbidden City based on historical records. But so far you can’t even enter the main building with the massive doors already built. Local people do come here to exercise and interestingly, sleep. There’s an upcoming running event where the organizers were handing out some T-shirts and promo stuff to people who have registered (I tried to register to get the commemorative shirt but the period to do so has ended, too bad). Anyway there are some leftover lantern festival floats and structures so maybe this is a place to visit during nighttime and during the lantern festival.
Bill Y — Google review
Do not expect to see grand palaces like the Forbidden City. The site is huge, like many of the parks and scenic site in China so get the tram ride ticket with the entrance ticket. The ride around the palace ground will take about half an hour and what you will see is landscaped greenery where all the hundreds of building are supposed to be. There are a few structure and buildings that are built to give some representation. The IMAX show next to the ticketing area will provide a better understanding and visualisation of how grand the palace was during its time. There is an area in the park where they do a miniaturised of the whole palace complex which I thought is very interesting.
Julian W — Google review
The maintenance of the guide equipments in the museum was not good, the monitors shows the wrong content and incorrect operation. It will be better if the administration of the museum take care of the issue more. The model of the ancient palace is elaborate, the sightseer can easily figure out the real scene in the ancient time.

I ventured into the sprawling expanse of Daming Palace National Heritage Park in Xi'an. I was stepping into a page from an ancient Chinese saga, where emperors once roamed and dynasties flourished. The park, a vast canvas of history and culture, beckoned me to uncover its secrets. The moment I passed through the grand entrance, the sheer scale of the park astounded me. It's a reconstruction of the Tang Dynasty's royal palace, once the heart of ancient Chang'an, and now a testament to its bygone splendor. The wide-open spaces, dotted with serene ponds and meticulously manicured gardens, vividly depict imperial grandeur. As I wandered, the historical significance of the site was palpable. The Taiye Pond, once the centerpiece of the palace, now reflects the sky, reflecting the legacy of a mighty past. The Hanyuan Hall, though a recreation, stood proudly, echoing the grandeur of imperial courts where emperors once held court. The tranquility of the park was its narrative. The soft rustling of leaves, the gentle hum of distant conversations, and the occasional bird song created a serene soundscape. This peace starkly contrasted with the city's hustle and bustle, offering a sanctuary to immerse in contemplation and awe. As the day progressed, the park transformed under the changing light. The sun's descent cast long shadows, making the palace ruins appear even more mystical. The play of light and shadow on the ancient walls and pathways animates the stories of those who once walked here. The park was not just a historical site but a cultural hub. I encountered artists capturing the beauty of the ruins, families enjoying picnics on the lush grass, and history enthusiasts exploring every nook and cranny. This blend of people from all walks of life added a vibrant layer to the experience. The Daming Palace National Heritage Park left an indelible impression on me as I went. It was a journey through time, a bridge connecting the present to the opulent era of the Tang Dynasty. This park was more than just a site to visit; it was a chapter of history that came to life, a memorable exploration of China's rich and majestic past.

Okay, so I thought biking on a wall sounded like a cute idea… and it was! For about the first 10 minutes. Then my legs remembered I’m not in Tour de France. That said—totally worth it. The city wall is epic. Wide enough to bike comfortably, and the views flip between old tiled rooftops and modern chaos. It’s such a cool mix. We went just before sunset, which I highly recommend. There was this golden haze over the city that made everything look like an ancient painting. The full ride is about 13-14km, so pace yourself. Or don’t finish. No shame. I gave up halfway, found a bench, and ate sunflower seeds like a grandma. 10/10 experience.

Walk on a part of history when you visit this place. The magnificient city walls is a must visit for anyone visiting Xi'an. Entry to the city wall is free, but you need to pay if you wish to go up the walls and visit the towers. The best way to explore the walls is to rent a bike and you can cycle around it. Please be reminded that it is quite a distance to complete full cycle. But u may choose to cycle from west gate to south gate to catch the sunset. Bicycle rental is available once you get to the top of the wall (from west or south gate) Once on top, you can get a bird's eye view of the city within the walls. Worth going and renting a bike. Ride on the path that are bumpy and made of cobblestone dated thousands of years back. Nice experience.

Next visit was to the Xian City Wall, what a beautiful walk this was!! we were impressed by the preservation of this marvellous 14 km fortification as we walked thought its “romantic” setting of red and grey colours that nearly took me back in time. Lamps and several other decorations completed a perfect setting for our quick afternoon walk admiring the hectic pace of Xian from the wall. The pathways are quite wide, so were told that it is common to see locals and tourist enjoying a bike ride through the top area, at this point, I wanted to grab a bike and go for it!!!, but we didn’t have enough time. We only did a little stroll around the wall and then we continued to the Muslim Quarter.

This is the Xianyang Museum Qin Han Branch. Not the main museum, which is notoriously difficult to get access ticket to. You still need to register for a ticket prior to visiting this museum. We made a last minute decision to visit so we couldn't get a guide, even though we much prefer to have one for museum visits. Nevertheless, we rented the pre-recorded guide and it was better than nothing. I would say 95% of the exhibits does not have English explanation, though all of them have their English names on it. The pre-recorded guide is all Chinese as well. One of my favourite thing about this museum is actually the architecture of the entire building. We spent quite a bit of time looking all over the building, scrutinizing every little bit and taking lots and lots of pictures. Definitely worth a visit! A Thoughtful and Flexible Museum Visit I visited the museum during the summer holidays, so it was quite crowded with local tourists. It wasn’t as peaceful as other museums I’ve been to, but the lively atmosphere showed how much people appreciated the exhibits—especially local visitors, who seem to really enjoy museums. One thing I loved was the option to rent an audio guide (30). As an introvert, it made the visit so much more comfortable. I could explore at my own pace, take extra time at displays that interested me, or skip parts that didn’t. No need to follow a group or feel rushed—just a personal and relaxing experience. There’s also a lovely café in the garden, perfect for enjoying some tea and a peaceful break surrounded by greenery. Near the entrance, a row of local hawkers sells traditional street food. If your culture or dietary preferences allow, I highly recommend trying some—it's a fun and flavorful part of the visit. Ticket -0 ( free entry).

Qinglong Temple is a renowned Buddhist temple with intricate architectural designs and a museum housing relics. It has been historically significant as a training ground for Buddhist monks, attracting Japanese monks seeking to learn about Buddhism. Notably, the temple's history is intertwined with the teachings brought back to Japan by the monk Kukai in 806. Situated amidst picturesque surroundings, including cherry trees that bloom beautifully from mid-March to April, it is considered a hidden gem for tourists visiting Xian.
Very beautiful scenic spot, a hidden gem for tourists in Xian. Best in mid-March to April when hundreds of Sakura trees blossom!

The original 582 AD foundation stones display Esoteric Buddhist carvings predating Tibetan influence. The sandalwood Buddha statue secretes resin droplets every April 8th (Buddha's birthday). Monks maintain the 1,200-year-old recipe for black ink used in scripture copying.

I was there quiet early in the morning as a habit to visit the temples early but the temple didn't open yet. I spent time at the outside area of the temple to see the daily life of the city and people. The temple was old and very large. The architecture was very unique. There was temple and museum area where people can learn a lot about the history, the architecture and other stuff. There were also a lot of green areas. Although there were a lot of people there, the temple remained quiet and peaceful.

[Cherry Blossom during March/April] We came here early April to view their cherry blossom. Cannot say that I'm not a little disappointed as some of the flowers have started to wither and fall due to recent hot weather. I would recommend you to come during mid of March. Admission is free of charge.

Qujiang Sites Park of Mausoleum of the Second Emperor of Qin is a part of the World Heritage List and offers a glimpse into ancient Chinese history. The park features the City Wall of the Ming Dynasty, which is the largest and most well-preserved castle from that era. Visitors can explore the 3,000-year-old Banpo Village Remains from the Neolithic Age and marvel at the Forest of Stone Steles, housing 3,000 stone steles from different periods.
My recent visit to the Qujiang Sites Park of Mausoleum of the Second Emperor of Qin in Xi'an, Shaanxi Province, China, left me utterly enchanted. The park is a cultural haven, resonating with the rich history of the Qin dynasty. The majestic mausoleum of the second emperor is a testament to China's deep-rooted heritage. Walking through the park, I was captivated by the intricate statues and artifacts that adorn the surroundings. The highlight, undoubtedly, was the awe-inspiring Terracotta Warriors and Horses. These life-sized terra cotta sculptures depict the emperor's formidable army and are a mesmerizing testament to ancient craftsmanship. One of the remarkable aspects of this cultural gem is its accessibility. The fact that entry is free makes it an ideal destination for families and friends seeking an enriching experience during holidays and vacations. The Qujiang Sites Park stands not just as a historical site but as a symbol of China's enduring legacy. In conclusion, my visit to this park was not just a stroll through history; it was a profound immersion into the cultural tapestry of China. For anyone passionate about history, art, or simply seeking a captivating outing, this park is a must-visit, offering a glimpse into the splendid legacy of the Qin dynasty.

(Translated by Google) Maoling is the resting place of Emperor Wu of the Han Dynasty Liu Che, as well as many accompanying tombs including the tombs of famous Han Dynasty figures such as Huo Qubing, Wei Qing, and Jin Rixi. Emperor Wu of the Han Dynasty can be said to be the greatest emperor of the Han Dynasty. He sent troops to fight against the Huns, opened up the Hexi Corridor, and made outstanding contributions to the expansion of China's territory. (Translated by Google) Maoling is the mausoleum of Emperor Wu of Han, and it is the largest imperial mausoleum in China besides the Mausoleum of the First Qin Emperor. The mausoleum area is divided into two parts. The Maoling Museum on the east side mainly houses the tomb of Huo Qubing, and the most notable feature is the famous stone sculpture of a horse trampling a Xiongnu. The west side is the mausoleum of Emperor Wu of Han. To the northwest of Emperor Wu's mausoleum, you can see the tomb of Lady Li, but it is not within the visitor area. The ticket price is 75 yuan, and there isn't much to see, which many people say is not worth it. However, for me, experiencing the scale of the imperial mausoleum and seeing the stone sculpture of a horse trampling a Xiongnu was worthwhile. The Great Mosque of Xi'an is a hidden gem nestled in the bustling Muslim Quarter. Despite being surrounded by a city of 12 million people, this tranquil sanctuary offers a serene escape. Its unique architecture, resembling a Chinese temple rather than the typical mosque style, sets it apart as an intriguing tourist destination. The rich cultural diversity of Islam is evident here, showcasing the influence of different regions on its design and traditions.

A fully functioning mosque dating back to 8th century AD. Worth a quick walk inside (paid entrance for visitors but local Muslims just walk in for their prayers). A little hard to find as main entrance seems to be in some back alley assessible from the main shopping street (pictured).

Visited the serene courtyards of the Great Mosque (清真寺, Qīngzhēnsì), and you instantly feel the 1,300-year history of the Silk Road come alive. It''s located right in the heart of the bustling Muslim Quarter, this is China's oldest and best-preserved mosque, offering a beautiful blend of two distinct cultures. Interestingly, you'll find elegant Ming Dynasty pagodas, sweeping tiled roofs, and traditional Chinese temple layouts, all aligned subtly toward Mecca. You'll find intricate Arabic calligraphy perfectly carved alongside traditional Chinese dragon and floral motifs. And Wander through the succession of tranquil, 4 garden-like courtyards, each leading you further into the complex and providing a peaceful escape from the nearby market hustle. The Prayer Hall is only open to worshippers, the exterior of the main hall is magnificent, with its peacock-blue glazed tiles and rich, Chinese-style timber structure.

The Big Wild Goose Pagoda, also known as the Giant Wild Goose Pagoda, is a renowned attraction in Xi'an. This attic-style brick pagoda was constructed in 652 during the Tang Dynasty to store sutras and Buddha figurines brought from India by Xuanzang. Originally five stories tall, it stands at a height of 64 meters after being rebuilt and renovated over the centuries.

It was my first time in Xi'an and my partner and I came during National Day. We wanted to go see the Terra Cotta Army, but it was fully booked because of the holiday. Instead, we came to the Big Wild Goose Pagoda. We had so much fun dressing up, walking around with others who were in their cultural outfits. We had such a great time and at night, enjoyed the lights surrounding the walls. I feel it's a great time to visit in the evening. Have a blast getting dressed up!

Han Yang Ling is a 2nd-century BC mausoleum located in the capital of the Qin Dynasty. The city is scattered with several grand burial complexes, including Han Yang Ling Mausoleum, Qianling Mausoleum, and Zhaoling Mausoleum. The underground museum at Han Yang Ling houses the tomb of Emperor Jing Liu Qi and features artifacts and models from that era.
A rarely visited mausoleum of a Han emperor, would highly recommend stopping here after braving the crowds at Emperor Qin's Terra Cotta warriors. Whereas that was war, this is peace. You are required to wrap your shoes in plastic, as you are walking over the tomb itself encased in glass. The figures are smaller, illustrating the luxurious royal life of the Han dynasty, including a great number of pottery animals. Not a lot of folks know about this place and we had to book out a taxi for the day to get here.

(Translated by Google) The Yangling Mausoleum of Han is located in Han Yangling Mausoleum of Han, Weicheng District, Xianyang, Xianyang, Shaanxi, China, and is the site of the fourth emperor of the Western Han Dynasty. It is the joint tomb of the Emperor and the Queen Mother, and is adjacent to Xianyang International Airport in Jian County, on the north bank of the Wei River, 20km northwest of downtown Xi'an. Excavations have begun, and relics are being excavated in all directions centering on Hanyangneung, and among 81 tunnels, Only 11 tunnels were excavated and opened as an underground museum. The official name is Hanyang Tomb Museum, which is the joint tomb of the fourth emperor of the Han Dynasty, Ke Jing (景帝) and Empress Dongying. You can purchase an admission ticket at the ticket office, put on your boots at the entrance, and then follow the glass passageway to view the grave goods preserved as they were when excavated. Various grave goods, including warriors, maids, eunuchs, and various animals, are characteristic burial customs of the era. The size of the Hanyangneung tomb figures is about 60cm, and what is interesting is that all of the figures in the Hanyangneung tombs are naked with friendly and happy expressions. Although it is a clay pot, it has no arms. Originally, the toyongs were dressed in silk clothes, but over time, they withered away, the wooden arms rotted away, and the toyongs were clearly differentiated between men and women. Located in Xi'an, China, the Forest of Stone Steles Museum, also known as the Xi'an Beilin Museum, is a historical treasure trove founded in 1944. This museum boasts an extensive collection of steles and stone sculptures dating back over 900 years. Originally based on the 'Xian stele forest,' it has since expanded to include artifacts from the ancient Confucius temple complex in Xi'an.
Besides the steles, it has an excellent gallery of Buddhist sculpture. Also a much more pleasant experience overall, as it is less crowded than most of the other museums in Xi’an. The Beilin (Forest of Steles) Museum is a rich depository of sculpture executed in Xian and the surrounding area. Originally the museum's prominence was based on its astounding collection of steles, but over the last fifty years it has also become the custodian of a body of Buddhist stone sculpture excavated in Shaanxi Province that represents the northwestern school of carving through successive periods of history from the Northern Wei (386-534) forward, with particular emphasis on the Northern Zhou (557-581) and Tang (618-907) periods.

As the name of this place indicates, it is a museum of historical gravestones in China. The entry ticket is inexpensive as part of the museum was not open due to renovation work in progress. Just be mindful this museum is deeply involved with Chinese history and calligraphy. Datang Everbright City is absolutely worth a visit if you're in Xi’an! It’s like stepping into a scene from ancient China, but with all the energy of a modern-day night market. The whole area is beautifully lit up at night, with colorful lights, street performers, and themed shows that bring the Tang Dynasty vibe to life. You can walk all the way from the Giant Wild Goose Pagoda to the city wall ruins—it’s a long stretch but full of cool sculptures, street art, and traditional-style buildings. The vibe is festive, especially in the evenings when it really comes alive. There’s a great mix of history, culture, and entertainment. You’ll find musicians, dancers, and even people dressed in Tang-era costumes. Definitely grab a snack or two from the food stalls (there’s everything from street food to fancy tea houses), and take your time soaking it all in. Pro tip: Go around sunset and stay into the night. That’s when it’s at its most magical.

Nature & Wildlife Areas
Xi'an Qinling Wildlife Park, located in the middle section of the Qinling Mountains, is the first wildlife park established in northwest China. It is situated about 28 kilometers south of downtown Xi'an City and boasts over 300 species of animals including birds, mammals, amphibians, and reptiles. The park offers a vast area to explore and visitors are advised to arrive early to make the most of their visit.
I had an incredible day with my friends at Qingling Wildlife Park in Xi'an. The park is expansive, so I would recommend arriving early in the morning to make the most of your time there. The journey from Xi'an takes around two hours, but it is definitely worth it. Admission tickets cost 140 RMB for adults and 100 RMB for students. Once you enter the park, you can take amazing photos and explore the different areas. There is a gate for the games park, and another road that leads to the buses which take you to the open wildlife park. The bus ride lasts around 30-40 minutes, during which you can see incredible wild animals roaming freely in their natural habitats. Although the bus doesn't stop at any specific location, I recommend recording the wildlife trip on your phone or camera to preserve this unforgettable experience. After the wildlife trip, the bus drops you off at the park, where you can spend the rest of the day walking, eating, taking photos, and playing games. It's the perfect opportunity to unwind and enjoy the beautiful scenery. Overall, I highly recommend visiting Qingling Wildlife Park for an unforgettable day out in nature. Qingling Wildlife Park is home to a wide variety of animals, including but not limited to Siberian tigers, lions, giraffes, elephants, and pandas. It's an incredible opportunity to see these animals up close and in person. The park is beautifully designed and maintained, with plenty of greenery and picturesque landscapes. It's a great place to relax and escape from the hustle and bustle of city life. In addition to the wildlife park, there are also other attractions such as a water park, a roller coaster, and a 5D cinema. There's truly something for everyone at Qingling Wildlife Park. If you're interested in learning more about the animals, there are educational exhibits and presentations throughout the park. You can learn about their habitats, behaviors, and conservation efforts. The park is also committed to environmental sustainability. They use solar energy to power some of their facilities, and have implemented waste reduction and recycling programs. The park staff are friendly and helpful, and there are plenty of amenities such as food stalls, restrooms, and seating areas throughout the park.

The facilities for the humans are excellent… the facilities for the animals are not… almost all the animals are in tiny concrete enclosures with no real vegetation… the chimpanzees look like they are in prison… the wolves, panthers and other “beasts of prey” (their label) look like they are in jail cells… these animals have no places to walk or move around… only a 2m by 2m concrete box to sit in… Again the zoo itself was clean and tidy and well maintained for the humans, there were many paths, gardens, shops and facilities… the same care is not shown to the animals

Located in Lintong District, the Underground Palace of the Emperor Qinshihuang Mausoleum is a must-visit attraction. It offers a fascinating simulation of the real mausoleum at a smaller scale, showcasing the complexity and grandeur of China's first emperor's tomb. The museum provides an insight into history by reproducing the tomb based on historical descriptions.
Amazing place depicting the magnificence of the emperors era

This underground place of Qin Shi Huang is a simulation of what the real mausoleum is like at a much smaller scale. As indicated by the government, the real mausoleum won't be unearthed within 100 years due to various reasons, but this will give people a vivid presentation on the complexity, luxury and grandness of the tomb of China's first emperor. Oh man, it will totally blow your mind... Please attend a tour with a professional guide. Otherwise you won't really get it.

There may have been 200 different species of tulips and 200 brides getting their photographs taken. Wedding photography appears to be big business at garden. The tulips were beautiful and well cared for, however they were lacking identification tags. In spite of the wonderful care, I found Chinese people appear to have little respect for plants and many were stepped on. As an American touring China, I found Chinese people would destroy the flowers to pose for a photo. I found this distasteful. Would have liked to have seen some platyceriums common in SE Asia but it probably gets too cold in Xi'an. The gardens are beautiful, however the variety of plants are limited, mostly tulips.

Xiangji Temple, also known as Heaped Fragrance Temple, is a significant Buddhist shrine located in the Chang'an District of Xi'an. It holds great historical importance as it was the resting place of the renowned Chinese Buddhist Monk Xuanzang after his death. The temple is considered the ancestral home of the Pure Land Sect of Buddhism and features an ancient pagoda from the Tang Dynasty.
After the passing of Master Shandao, the second patriarch of the Pure Land Sect, his disciple Huai Yun built the Chongling Pagoda in Shenheyuan, northwest of Chang'an City, in the second year of Emperor Gaozong 's Yonglong reign (681 AD) to commemorate his ashes. A temple later developed around the pagoda , completed in the second year of Emperor Zhongzong's Shenlong reign (706 AD) and named Xiangji Temple

Xi'an Drum Tower, a magnificent cultural site with a rich history dating back to the time when Xi'an was the Imperial capital of China. During the day, visitors can marvel at its intricate decoration and monolithic construction, while at night it is illuminated by colorful lights, creating an equally impressive sight amidst the bustling traffic. The tower offers traditional musical performances during the day and provides a stunning view outside, especially at night.
Xi'an Drum Tower is a lovely traditional building in the city centre. I bought a combined ticket with the nearby Belll Tower. Both are well worth visiting. Short traditional musical performances take place during the day and I managed to listen in to some lovely music. Interesting historical building.

Magnificent and beautiful, full of history, more than a thousand years of deep Chinese history. I had a great time just visiting this ancient building, and it is so beautiful for pictures. You can also wear a hanfu and pose for pictures outside the building. Just behind is the muslim food street. there is an old mosque and also a high official home, which is well preserved.

Short walk from Exit 9 of Bell Tower Metro station. The Drum Tower was also used to indicate certain time periods. From opening of the city gate to the closing. "一更人,二更锣,三更鬼,四更贼,五更鸡". On 2 sides of the tower, it also hosts 24 drums, symbolising the 24 key Festivals in the lunar calendar. There's also a 7 mins drum performance here in the middle of the tower at several times in the day and I was just there in time to catch the 1145am one. There's also a showcase here on the history of drums and how they are an integral part of the community, not just for 'general announcements' but also in festival celebrations. Exiting from the Drum Tower, just round the corner at the back of it is 回坊 Muslim Quarter. Here, there's a mosque and mainly 2 long streets of local food/snacks, mostly halal.

Hanyangling Museum, also known as Yang Mausoleum, is situated on the Weihe River's bank in the northern outskirts of Xi'an. It serves as the multi-burial cemetery for Emperor Jing of Han and his queen. The tomb was constructed between 153 BC and 126 BC and spans an area of 20 square kilometers.
This site is less visited compared to the site of the terracota warriors. However, this should not be missed. Listen to the history, see the pits, and the restored chariots, and terracota horses. Learn about the amazing craftsmanship of the artisans, and their fates after their work was completed. Come during winter season where tourist season is over.
Bromohd — Google review
Clearly overshadowed by its older sibling, the terracotta warriors, this museum is worth both your time and your money! The presentation of the burial pits is way better than the one in the terracotta warriors, as you can walk above and beside the pits. Of course the museum is not that big in comparison but the entrance fee costs half of what you pay for the terracotta. Do not miss it as it has a unique charm and of course it is less crowded!
Grigoris G — Google review
For anyone who loves ancient history, this is a place not to be missed. Though it’s not as grand, famous, or popular as the Emperor Qin Terracotta Warriors Museum, it’s absolutely worth the journey. When I visited, I was quite literally the only person at the entire underground burial pit.The site is impressively maintained, housed in climate-controlled chambers that preserve its integrity. You really have to come here to understand the experience, it’s quiet, haunting, and deeply evocative. I visited the Terracotta Warriors today as well, but somehow, I preferred the atmosphere at Hanyangling. A bit of possibly speculative info, the terracotta figures here are less detailed than those at Emperor Qin’s site. One theory suggests that, in order to protect the secret location of his future necropolis, the emperor had all the artisans killed leading to a loss of craftsmanship and knowledge over generations.
Eric W — Google review
Two sites here: an emperor's mausoleum museum from the Han Dynasty with lots of high quality artefacts. Also a Han underground excavation of 15 burial sites of high ranked officials from the Han dynasty. About an hour's drive from the old Xi'an city center. Almost empty when we went on a Saturday afternoon in the summer. Big contrast to the Terracotta Army site and the Shaanxi museum site. Worth seeing as this is a different dynasty. They do have English guides on site when we asked (100rmb per guide, for each site) but we weren't sure if the quality would be good. No English audioguide. However, the underground burial chambers had plenty of English signage. The Emperor museum had no English signage, but very good Chinese signage and using Google Translate was more than sufficient. There's about 15 minutes walk each between ticket office, site 1 and site 2, with no shade, so bear that in mind. You can also call didi cars for the journeys in between, but there is generally a lack of cars in the area. Well worth visiting if you have a total of 4-5hours to spare (time including transportation). The experience was much more peaceful, and the artefacts high quality, as well as the learning experience. Tickets were cheap, only 70rmb each. Bring passport. No WiFi on site.
Boon K — Google review
A Masterclass in Ancient Craftsmanship and Modern Preservation Visiting the Hanyangling Museum was an absolutely captivating experience and, in my opinion, a must-see for anyone interested in ancient Chinese history, especially after seeing the Terracotta Army. This "underground museum" truly immerses you in the burial pits of Emperor Jingdi and Empress Wang of the Western Han Dynasty. What truly stands out here is the astounding level of detail in the miniature terracotta figures. Unlike the larger, more militaristic figures of Qin Shi Huang's army, the Hanyangling figures (around 1/3 life-size) offer an incredibly intimate glimpse into daily life in the Han court. From graceful palace maids and diligent civil servants to countless animals like pigs, dogs, and horses – each figure is meticulously sculpted with distinct expressions and postures. You can even see the subtle details of their clothing and accessories, which were originally painted in vibrant colors! As you walk on the transparent glass walkways directly above the excavation sites, you can see these treasures exactly as they were unearthed. It's an incredible feeling to peer down and observe the archaeologists' work in progress, and to truly appreciate the sheer scale and artistry involved. This raises an incredible question: how could they achieve such perfection and intricate detail over 2000 years ago? It's baffling to think about the level of organization, craftsmanship, and artistic skill required to produce such a vast and detailed underground world. The precision in their sculpting techniques, the knowledge of materials, and the planning involved in creating such a grand mausoleum complex are truly mind-boggling. It speaks volumes about the advanced civilization of the Western Han Dynasty. The museum itself is a marvel of modern conservation, utilizing advanced technology to protect the relics while allowing for close-up viewing. The controlled environment and the innovative use of glass create a respectful and incredibly immersive experience. Hanyangling Museum is not just a collection of artifacts; it's a profound journey into the past, leaving you in awe of ancient ingenuity and the enduring legacy of the Han Dynasty. Highly, highly recommended.

Pretty decent museum and paid guide. Off peak season is half off so guide was only 50 rmb. He takes you through the museum and the pits and explains why these Han dynasty pits are so different from the earlier Qin dynasty pits (terracotta warriors). Why did the figures get much smaller in the later dynasty? Visit to find out! The paid movie in the museum is only worth it if you can understand mandarin at an advanced level though.
Mike X — Google review
Fascinating look into depths of the partially excavated Han Emperor Jing’s mausoleum. The mini terracotta figurines (humans and many animals, including pregnant pigs) in-situ invites imagination into how the ancients’ daily court life must have been like. Spent minimum 2 hours. Not crowded in Nov. Bring powerful night mode camera. Very close to bullet train station from Han Yan Ling (20-30 mins drive to the Xian North Railway Station). Recommended - Xian’s ancient capital of China reputation has more than just Qin terracotta - rich archaeological sites for Tang and Han dynasties provides a rich rewarding peek into ancient China.

Walk down the street to the beautiful drum tower, and buy some muslim tasteless bread for travel checklist… enjoy!
Chili A — Google review
A street stall, like a mini Muslim street in Xian. You get all Muslim food here. The street is full of colours with a lot to buy. The amount of food you get is enough usually for the appetite. You can get to Xi'an great mosque, drum tower and bell tower from here. The street is crowded at night, beware of pickpocket.
Aehtoosham S — Google review
My favourite place in all of Xi'an! The food is amazing and it's so fun to explore the streets and restaurants.
Ana F — Google review
There are tons of Muslim noodle shops in town that are just as good and no tourist groups to mob the place. A local I met on the train here told me to avoid it and he was right. There was a great noodle shop near the convention center with the same noodles and pao muo style noodle bits. There is a super old mosque behind the market street. There used to be some artisans here doing sniffer bottle arts and the like but it is all overrun with paper cuts and low quality tourist kitsch.

The Big Wild Goose Pagoda culture and leisure resort offers a unique blend of ancient and modern attractions. Visitors can take the local bus 307 to reach this destination, which also stops at the Warriors site. The resort is described as touristy yet soulful, with a must-see music, light, and water show in the evening. The spectacular fountain is highlighted as a major attraction, although there are concerns about its impact on the temple's tranquility.
Interesting combination of the ancient and the new! Certainly worth a visit. Touristy but with soul! I certainly will be back. Especially the music/light/water show in the evening was great.
Gerhard R — Google review
We saw this Pagoda as part of our evening tour and it looked great lit up on the clear night we had. It may not be the most spectacular pagoda around but when the light and water show is on it is really emphasised and stands out. You can’t avoid seeing it when in the area.

Hancheng Lake is a beautiful park that exudes the charm of the Han dynasty. The park offers visitors a serene and picturesque setting to enjoy nature and immerse themselves in the historical ambiance of ancient China.
This artificial reservoir's islands form the Big Dipper constellation when viewed from the south dock. The weeping willows along the boardwalk are clones of Tang Dynasty specimens. Fishermen still use cormorants with traditional throat ties to prevent swallowing catches.

The stone carvings and sculptures along the path of the beautiful lake depicting significant people and events of the Han Dynasty are spectacular. There is a statue of a person offering incense to the heavens that you can do likewise with decorated incense you can buy from an unmanned incense booth (honor system paying with Alipay). After doing our pai-pai with the incense and walking back we saw a circular rainbow, something I’ve never witnessed before so I take it as an auspicious sign that our wishes have been granted.

Guanzhong Folk-custom Art Museum offers a glimpse into the social and cultural life of people in Shaanxi from the 3rd century AD to the early 20th century. The museum houses a vast collection of stone carvings, ancient residences, and intangible cultural heritage items such as local operas, traditional rites and customs, and workshops for traditional handicrafts. The owner has meticulously collected and rebuilt various architectural elements from old buildings.
(Translated by Google) Nice surprise 15km from Xi'an. We visited this open-air museum which brings together different habitats characteristic of Shaanxi dating from the Ming dynasty (15th century) to the Republic of China (1911-1949). The buildings, perfectly reconstructed, were saved from destruction by a wealthy entrepreneur. The museum is accessible from Xi'an by bus (line 730). Guided tours are possible in English. Note that there are surprisingly very few people which makes the visit pleasant. Many restaurants a few meters from the museum entrance. (Original) Belle surprise à 15km de Xi'an. Visiting the Xi'an Guanzhong Folk Custom Art Museum in Zhongnanshan Mountain was a fascinating cultural journey. I went with three Yemeni friends and a Chinese friend, who drove us in his camping car. We spent four hours exploring this open-air museum, designed to look like a traditional village. Walking through the cobbled streets and wooden buildings, we felt like we were stepping back in time. The museum showcased traditional houses, folk art, and crafts, giving us a glimpse into local history and culture. Our Chinese friend shared insights that made the exhibits more meaningful, helping us understand the traditional customs on display. The live performances of local opera and music added to the experience, creating a lively atmosphere. The artisans and staff were welcoming, sharing stories about their work and the local traditions.

It is said that the owner of the museum collected stone carvings, doors, windows, canopies, etc. from old buildings from various places and rebuilt them. I personally think it is interesting, and the sincerity is also admirable. There is also the Shaanxi old tune performance that has been awarded the intangible world cultural heritage. It is said to be the rock music of Shaanxi 😁 (Original)

(Translated by Google) Location: Located at the foot of Mount Zhongnan, the site covers a vast area. Numerous residential ruins were found across China, and through the dedicated efforts of Director Wang Yongchao, the Ming and Qing dynasty buildings have been reconstructed one by one. This is a remarkable feat, and the restoration is ongoing, so please come and support us. Experience: You can choose to explore on your own, or you can take a guided tour. However, the entire park lacks written information, so it's recommended to seek out a guide, as this will prevent you from gaining a deeper understanding of the architecture. Recommendation: Ideal for those interested in historical architecture, you can see a variety of architectural features, and the exhibition halls contain a wealth of unique artifacts that you can enjoy at your leisure. (However, those without an interest will find it quite difficult to understand!)
