Panama City

Panama City, the capital of Panama, is a modern city framed by the Pacific Ocean and man-made Panama Canal. Casco Viejo, its cobblestoned historic center, is famed for colonial-era landmarks like the neoclassical Palacio Presidencial and bougainvillea-filled plazas lined with cafes and bars. The Miraflores Locks offers views of ships traversing the canal, an essential shipping route linking the Atlantic and Pacific.

Specialty Museums
Biomuseo, designed by the renowned architect Frank Gehry, is a whimsical museum structure in Panama City that celebrates the country's rich biodiversity. The museum features 8 galleries that showcase engaging and oversized visuals to tell the story of Panama's unique biodiversity. It explores how human presence has impacted the region over time and highlights the different evolution of the Atlantic and Pacific regions. The museum takes a more abstract approach, offering a fresh perspective on the interconnectedness of all species.
I came for the architecture, but was really impressed with the exhibits and especially the helpful staff. Unlike in other museums where people are just there to tell you not to touch anything, staff greet you when you enter the room and help to explain the exhibits or answer questions. Exhibits flow through both indoor and outdoor spaces, and there are also lots of screens, videos, and interactive displays.

Really nice place to visit. Architecture is modern and colourful. Permanent exhibitions provide a unique portrait of Central American biological diversity status. I like the most the fish tanks showing the difference between pacific and Atlantic Ocean.

Cool little stop. Walked around in the free area. Then explored the grounds. Nice water views. To top it off, a passion fruit snowcone for a jot day relief.

Remarkable museum, so many good sets, so much variety of knowledge and interesting set ups. Great museum for kids and adults as well. Interactivity, beauty and knowledge at all cornera.

It's $20 if you're not Panamanian, but it's worth the money. There is a small coffee shop/Cafe there. There are staff in every exhibit that speak English and Spanish and will tell you about the exhibits! Nice air conditioning too.

I learnt so much!! Such an amazing and interactive experience; hands down one of the best museums I've visited in Panama! Suitable for adults and kids, also disabled person friendly. Highly recommend.
Tamara N — Google review
Amaaaazing experience at the Biomuseo! From the ticket counter to the exit, the hospitality was wonderful. As a first-time visitor to Panama, I loved sharing this with my kids—the welcome video was such a cool introduction. Section 3’s seating area, with its breathtaking mountain views, was absolutely gorgeous and one of my favorite spots. You can easily spend 2–3 hours here with kids. The museum is clean, well-maintained, and staffed by friendly, helpful people. The exhibits were both fun and educational—the history on Earth’s air in particular was invaluable. Easily one of my favorite attractions in Panama, and I would absolutely visit again.

Nature & Parks
Metropolitan Natural Park, established in 1988, is an urban wildlife refuge located just outside the main Panama City area. It offers a variety of easy-to-moderate trails, picnic areas, and dedicated lookout points. As Central America's only protected tropical forest within city limits, it attracts nature enthusiasts and wildlife photographers seeking to capture the diverse flora and fauna.
What a magnificent place right in the middle of Panama. This place is magical ✨️ I love how the rays of the sun gently kissed the plants. The air is clean, crisp, and fresh. Lots of Fauna and Flora. Colorful butterflies. The breathtaking views made this an amazing experience. It costs $2 for locals.
G D — Google review
Metropolitan Natural Park was such a great stop! It’s only $5 to enter, and there are about 5 miles of trails to explore. We did the hike to the scenic overlook — about 3 miles round trip — and it was very family-friendly. It’s uphill, but not too steep or difficult. The views at the top are amazing, with a full panorama of Panama City and the sea dotted with ships waiting to enter the canal. We even saw some monkeys along the way! Highly recommend if you’re looking for an easy nature escape right near the city.
Cara H — Google review
Beautiful park, perfect for some hike. Be aware that when they say moderate to describe the intensity of the trail it really means intense for kids or elders.
Gonzalo ( — Google review
We arrived late - about 1/2 hour before official closing, but were told that we could go on one of the shorter trails if we were back by 5. Lovely walk, hot! But nice observation area at top of trail, and we saw an agouti(?) some turtles, butterflies, spiders, a small scorpion, and lots of cool flora. Go.
Sheila B — Google review
A hike easy enough for the whole family. Various routes that take about 1 - 2hrs to navigate observantly. Steepest part is the final 10mins to get above the canopy where the reward is the view. Can get hot and humid so bring water.
Lana G — Google review
We loved this park and seeing all the animals! Hated seeing the flying cockroaches, but everything else was awesome.
Janice E — Google review
A place in the city where you'll be in direct contact with nature and watch some charming species like the agouti (locally called ñeque) and sloths, besides a number of birds, turtles, insects and flowering plants.

Ancon Hill, a prominent natural landmark in Panama City, offers a refreshing escape into nature within the urban environment. The hill is home to a nature reserve where visitors can spot sloths, deer, and other wildlife as they hike through the rainforest. As you ascend the hill, you'll be treated to stunning panoramic views of Panama Canal, Bridge of the Americas, Casco Viejo, and the modern cityscape.
One of the most memorable experience during my trip to Panama. Woke up early and hiked up the hill, arrived right before sunrise. I think it was about a 30 min walk. Ran into some Americans who were doing some missionary work. Once summiting the hill you are able to see the entire city from a panoramic perspective.

The most memorable and greatest experience I have had in Panama. The view up here is breathtaking and so worth the one hour hike. It is truly spectacular.

Nice and easy hiking trail. Close to downtown. Overlook Panama city and the canal. There are plenty of platforms and benches to rest. Wonderful experience!

Ancón Hill is a 199 metres (653 ft) high hill that overlooks Panama City, Panama, adjacent to the township of Ancón. Interesting walk through jungle and you might even see some animals. Not a difficult walk but the air temperature and humidity can increase discomfort.
Mr B — Google review
A fairly easy hike up. We came here in the morning so it was not that got yet. The best place to get a good look at the Canal with a nice pair of binoculars or zoom camera. The photos we took of the canal are from our zoom camera. If you're a patient, you will also see some Toucans! The speeds spinning three to four hours on a round trip to the canal
Eric W — Google review
This is an awesome walk. We got to the top and saw small monkeys. We were disappointed we couldn’t find a Sloth, then we did. He was awesome. You have to be patient and keep looking. They look like a termite ball up in the trees. We missed the Toucan’s but overall it was worth the hike. This was our last full day and the Sloth made the trip. This is a must do.
Terry W — Google review
I really enjoyed the walk up Ancon Hill. It's about 2m (~3.2k) round trip hike. The incline is gradual and doable. I would not recommend it for anyone with mobility challenges or who has issues being on their feet for significant stretches at a time. There are benches on the hike which makes things easier. We didn't see many animals on our visit, but the views are beyond spectacular!

Bar
Maito Restaurante, located in Panama City, is a Panamanian fusion restaurant founded by chef Mario Castrellon. Emphasizing the use of local ingredients, the restaurant boasts on-site herb and vegetable gardens. Tucked away amidst lush greenery in Coco del Mar, Maito offers a unique dining experience with its globally inspired fusion cuisine that showcases traditional dishes like langoustine tule masi, a stew from the indigenous Kuna tribe made with coconut and plantains.
We had a very lovely experience, a couple of friends were visiting Panama and we took them to Maito. We all had the tasting menu, which was amazing. We had tried the tasting menu a year ago and didn’t love it, this time around they elevated the menu and each plate was better than the last one. Good value for your money. Our waiter was great, explained every dish in English which made the experience for our guests even better.
Camila G — Google review
Outstanding food and service on their beautiful patio. The menu is a bit intimidating, with no specific descriptions of the dishes, but our server described each dish to us in detail, helped us determine how many dishes we should order to share, and recommended several dishes that we enjoyed. Cocktails were creative, tasty and beautifully presented. We would return in a heartbeat.
Sarah H — Google review
This was my girlfriend's favorite restaurant in the city. She loved how the seafood was prepared, and this stands out because she eats seafood nearly every meal. The prices were quite affordable considering the quality. I had vegetarian dishes, and they were rich and delicious, just not on the same level as her plates.
Jason B — Google review
Went to maito for the tasting menu. It was overall exceptional. There were ~9 courses. The soup was beyond expectations. The small bites were good but not the standouts. We had three seafood main courses each increasingly better. The desserts were top notch. Eqch course had unique ingredients and a story to Panamá and the cuisine of the country. Our waiter was friendly and smiling and seemed genuinely excited to share the food with us. We sat outside on the patio since the weather was so nice in Panama in December at night. Decor is simple but elegant. Definitely recommend if you have the time and want a tasty and elegant meal in Panama.

Review of Maito – A Culinary Gem in Panama City Maito exceeded all our expectations! From the moment we stepped in, the service was impeccable—attentive, warm, and professional. The staff made us feel truly welcomed, adding a personal touch to our dining experience. The food was simply outstanding. Every dish was a perfect balance of flavors, showcasing the richness of Panamanian cuisine with a modern twist. The ingredients were fresh, and the presentation was beautiful. Whether it was seafood, meat, or a vegetarian dish, everything was cooked to perfection. The ambiance of Maito added to the experience—elegant yet relaxed, making it the perfect place for a special evening. It’s no surprise that this restaurant is consistently ranked among the best. If you’re in Panama City and looking for an unforgettable dining experience, Maito is an absolute must-visit!

Their reputation is well-deserved. Beautiful setting with a great menu and very nice wine list. Everything from the starting cocktail to the offered rolls and even the restroom decor was on-point. Top notch service, thanks to all the staff!! Will definitely return!

First time visiting Panama and first meal was here. What an absolutely incredible gastrointestinal experience. This place is an absolute MUST! The flavors were so incredible and perfectly balanced. You must experience their menu. Chef even came out and made recommendations for the vegan in our party. We made sure to even try a dessert even though we were beyond satisfied with all of our meals. Very very memorable experience. Thank you so much for starting our trip off on a high note!!!
Jan K — Google review
Had the tasting menu. Great for dates or groups. Generally very good, probably the best in Panama and surely the best with Caribbean and Chinese mix. Some plates were delicious like the Fish and Pork, the Dim Sum with Afro-Caribbean touch some were a bit more so-so (good but not delicious). I think they could work a bit more on textures and take more risks. Deserts were very good but lacked a WOW effect. Service was ok but not as good as you would expect from fine dining (interrupted several times by waiters, they took dishes too quickly, some explanations were not as detailed, etc.).

Fonda Lo Que Hay is a hidden gem located in Panama City's old town center, Casco Antiguo. This unassuming cafeteria offers fantastic food with a daily menu based on fresh seafood. The industrial-style setting adds to its charm, and the menu features eight dishes inspired by Panamanian cuisine with a subtle mix of diverse cultures and tastes.
During our stay in Panama, Fonda Lo Que Hay was hands down the best restaurant we visited. The flavors here are authentic and uniquely Panamanian, executed with impressive creativity and skill. We ordered 4–5 dishes to share, and each one was better than the last. An absolute “must try” is the cassava with tuna, which literally melts in your mouth. The mondongo was on another level, rich and full of character. The coconut rice struck the perfect balance—flavorful but not overly sweet. The catch of the day, baked in the oven, was a true highlight: fresh, natural, and packed with vibrant flavors. The clams were also incredibly fresh, something you notice right away with the first bite. When it comes to cocktails, every drink exceeded our expectations—creative, well-balanced, and beautifully presented. Clearly, this is a concept that’s been carefully thought through from start to finish. What really stood out was that, even with the place completely full, the kitchen team worked seamlessly together: well-organized, efficient, and making sure plates came out in good time. That kind of harmony speaks to passion and dedication. In our opinion, this restaurant deserves to be on the radar for a Michelin star thanks to its quality, creativity, and consistency. 100% recommended. We’ll definitely be coming back on our next trip to Panama.

I came here for lunch and ordered the “Sexy Clams” - absolutely delicious! The flavors were perfectly balanced. It was truly outstanding. I also ordered a side of bread that came toasted with butter, which was perfect for dipping into the broth. I enjoyed my meal so much that I came back to try the tuna tostada everyone raves about, but unfortunately, it didn’t quite live up to the hype for me. It was good, just not as impressive as my first meal.
Rasha — Google review
Lovely experience at a place recommended by a lot of friends. Honestly, it wasn’t my top two spots in Panama, but the steak was our favorite, so tender and delicious. The salads were a bit salty and acidic, even though they said no salt is added. The service was outstanding, and the staff were clearly helpful and friendly. Overall, it really comes down to personal taste, so it’s worth trying for yourself. Just make sure to reserve at least 2–3 nights in advance!

Fonda Lo Que Hay Beautiful venue and entrance, love a big door and they had one that opened in a cool way! Service was quick and attentive! Servers spoke in both Spanish and English. The kitchen is open concept so you can see everything that’s going on, very cool! We ordered a few things: Tuna Cassava Tostada 8.9/10: Buttery, creamy, rich! The pickled onion salsa on the side added the acidity needed to make this dish hit the spot! Love the concept of a crispy bed underneath a carpaccio. Og Fish empanadas 8.1/10: Crispy and oozing with cheese! Amazing dips on the side as well. Would recommend as a nice light started. Grilled Oysters 4.5/10: Nothing against the dish just wasn’t our cup of tea! Tried to explain that they didn’t do anything wrong just wasn’t for us. Was very heavy on the smoke flavour made it hard to eat. They did end up taking this off our bill as we didn’t eat much of it but we didn’t expect it to be taken off nor did we ask. So A+ in customer service. Beef Guacho 7.8/10: Overall pretty solid and tasty dish! Only criticisms would be that it’s very heavy, and you aren’t given enough chip to dip ratio. Also the cups get quite soggy before you get the chance to eat them. Overall would try them out again!

Nice lively restaurant in Casco Antiguo. Visited Wed 22 Oct. Good cocktails and the food is amazing. The Pig Leg Sandwich is easily top3 things I've put in my mouth in the 5 days I have been in Panama. Limited vegetarian options - but the mushroom curry rice dish was amazing. RECOMMEND.
Tarun Y — Google review
I ordered a pork sandwich, my partner ordered a beef gaucho. The waitress said "Just for you to know the gaucho is quick but you need to wait 25 mins for the sandwich". 25 minutes for a sandwich?! Insane! The back part of the restaurant feels like a fancy cafe, the small front part (where we sat) is more of a formal restaurant. So make sure you book ahead and request the front room. The food was delicious even if I didn't eat what I went for because I didn't want to wait 25 minutes for a sandwich. The service was fine.

The food was amazing! We ordered the skirt steak meal for two and it easily could have fed a third person. It was so good I didn’t even want to stop eating. Everything was full of flavor and cooked perfectly.

Tacos La Neta is a rooftop restaurant located in Casco Viejo, offering a variety of Hispanic dishes with a focus on tacos. In addition to tacos, the menu includes burritos, esquites, sopa de tortillas, and desserts like tres leches and flan. The restaurant also provides vegetarian options and drinks. Visitors can enjoy live music and dancing when available.
We came here for dinner and to enjoy the rooftop atmosphere. The view of the city was spectacular! The servers were very helpful and accommodating. We were able to order some plain cheeseburgers for the kids, while the rest of us enjoyed delicious tacos. We would definitely come back!
Monika N — Google review
Looking for good Mexican while in Casco Viejo, we found Tacos La Neta online and decided to give it a go. The staff were nice and professional and the service was swift and accurate. Not one complaint to be lodged. The food was good, but had so little authentic Mexican flavor, which might be explained by this being Panama and not Mexico. Overall, we wouldn’t hesitate to return for tacos, but don’t come expecting Tijuana. :-) The view was amazing and the drinks were strong!

Fantastic views. Pretty decent food. Above a hostel. Drinks arent badly priced. A small pool is there. Closer to the sun so wear your factor 50!
Samuel E — Google review
The view is amazing as it is located on the roof. You get to see the city and the night view is awesome. They have multiple bar areas to choose from and the staff is very friendly. Decent amount of drinks to choose from. The food seems to be good as well.
Anthony B — Google review
We went there for an early dinner (tacos, burritos, nachos and drinks). The prices are a little bit pricey for Panama style but the shrimp tacos were amazing! The Pollo ones are little bit dry… The nachos were also great. The atmosphere up there was impeccable! And turns out we landed on the Selina rooftop which we actually wanted to go to later on!
Chiara S — Google review
Went here because my AirBnB host recommended it and I liked the idea of a rooftop with a view. The problem is with accessing the restaurant. Crossing from Casco Viejo into this area is like leaving a Disney theme park and suddenly being inside an ugly film about New York City in its gritty 1970s decline. The hotel entrance is hard to find, it’s all bleak and in disrepair, it’s a maze of concrete to finally reach the elevator to the rooftop. Once there, the staff are pleasant and the food/drinks are fine. The view toward the new city with its skyscrapers is impressive, but I suspect there are much nicer ways to get that view.
Isaac L — Google review
First the good: The views are amazing, as advertised. Wonderful rooftop setting and you can see the entire skyline. The food was solid, but not outstanding. I had a burrito and it was tasty and not ultra gigantic...just right. The service, though, was impersonal, and verging on rude. We had to search out the waitstaff to be seated, and we weren't even sure we were in the right place: There is no one there to greet you and that's a problem. Getting to this place is terrible: you leave Casco Antiguo and the 'hood is really run down and feels quite dangerous. On top of that, to actually get to the restaurant, you have to go down a gross alley, enter a nondescript door to what looks like a closed-down restaurant, go through to the back (where random dudes are sitting together whispering...weird!) and take a very sketchy elevator to the top floor of the building. When you get there, there is no hostess so you're wondering if you're still even in the right place. Once you wander around and find the staff and get seated, the chairs are postage-stamp sized and super uncomfortable to sit on and they put the three of us at a 2-person table so our food barely fit. The final straw was the waitress (someone other than who served us) giving us grief for not tipping in cash. Okay....
Joe V — Google review
We went to Tacos La Neta in San Francisco around 7 pm—friend in tow, dog on leash. From the start, the welcome was warm and the service quick; it’s genuinely pet-friendly, which I really appreciate. We kept it simple: a Balboa beer, the chicken flauta entrée, and cochinita pibil tacos. Everything came out fresh and nicely presented. The flavors, though, leaned mild. My friend kept dipping into the four salsas—great to have—but I’d rather the seasoning be built into the dishes so they don’t rely on extra sauce to shine. What threw us off was the party-mode volume that early in the evening. At 7 pm I’m expecting dinner, not a disco. I can see why neighbors mention the noise; at that hour it felt unnecessary and made conversation harder than it should be. Bottom line: kind staff, solid food, and truly pet-friendly. If they dial up the spice in the kitchen—and dial down the speakers earlier in the night—it would be an easy go-to.

Mahalo Cocina y Jardin is a popular restaurant in Panama known for its beautiful backyard and delicious food. The Mahalo Snack Shack offers delectable breakfast options, while Dodo Bon Pan serves amazing vegan sandwiches. Visitors have praised the great food, outstanding presentation, and reasonable prices. The atmosphere is described as amazing, with attention to detail and excellent customer service. However, it's recommended to reserve a table in advance due to its popularity.
I came back to this restaurant after 2 years and it did not disappoint! Their flatbreads are delicious and savoury as well as the truffle fries, the broccolini and the cauliflower tempura. Nice location in Casco Viejo, lots of options on the menu, also vegetarian / vegan ones. The outside area is surrounded by palmtrees and illuminated by fairy lights at night. I recommend the cocktail „Boquete Blossom“ with strawberries and lemongrass. Great and friendly service, would always come back:)

Laid back luxury vibes with an affordable price tag, the staff are personable, warm and friendly. Service is top notch, went during a busy period for around 11AM a Sunday and they never missed a beat in the sequence of service, the most impressive aspect of the service was the farewell, each and every member of the team thanked you as you exited the restaurant. The decor is a semless combination of modern & rustic which creates the atmosphere and vibe, the back ground music was at the perfect level and complemented the ambiance. NO WORDS can discribe the food it's one of those things you have to experience for yourself.

We walked in off the street after a recommendation. Beautiful atmosphere. Staff was pleasant and respectful. Food was AMAZING! We enjoyed every dish we ordered. Brought to the table hot and expertly prepared. Only down may be how close the dining is in the bar area, but not a big detractor. Had the wonderful cauliflower and the portobello gyoza, the falafel bowl and the fish tacos. A++

Beautiful restaurant hidden a bit in Casco Viejo. The breakfast food was to die for with a really wonderful Irish Coffee. The staff was more attentive than in many places in Panamá. The ambience in the garden sitting area is beautiful and pleasant. It was a nice meal with the addition of beautiful scenery and a little bit of quiet in the heart of the city.

Tomillo Steak House is a charming restaurant located in the historic Casco Viejo area of Panama. The eatery offers a unique dining experience with a casual and romantic atmosphere, complete with a terrace that exudes old-world charm. Renowned Panamanian Chef Felipe Milanes leads the culinary team, creating a menu inspired by local and organic ingredients infused with Caribbean and Central American flavors. The concept revolves around shared dishes or tapas, allowing guests to savor an array of global flavors.
Food is fantastic and service is professional and relatively quick. Come here for the steaks, they are a classic. This is your “everyday” bistro done right. I highly recommend their chicharrones as an appetizer! Crunchy, fatty, and delicious.

Excellent customer service! I was sharing a plate of steak with my friends but I wanted well done instead of medium rare, and they offered to me to cook the pieces I was going to eat! Amazing I have never had such an accommodating and thoughtful service ever! The food was also very good! One of the best entraña I have eaten so far. Elegant and quiet atmosphere too. The portion sizes were quite big, enough to fill you up.

So disappointed with both the food and service - ordered the bucatini surf and turf and didn’t taste any of the brisket, the dish was loaded with heavy cream and oil but no spice or flavor. The service was abysmal and felt like the waiter just didn’t care at all.
Salman H — Google review
I was the sole diner seated in the entire dining room, while meanwhile dozens of other diners, including ones without reservations, were offered, and escorted to the vibrant, busy, patio dining area. But there was apparently "no space" for me to move to there. No idea why. The food was good, no more than that - an overcooked, rubbery lobster tail; a dessert that they'd changed components on from what was shown on the menu, and when I asked was told, "oh, they did that awhile ago, we just haven't changed the menu" - and just wasn't all that good. Given how highly recommended the place was, I was disappointed in the experience.
