Specialty Museums
Biomuseo, designed by the renowned architect Frank Gehry, is a whimsical museum structure in Panama City that celebrates the country's rich biodiversity. The museum features 8 galleries that showcase engaging and oversized visuals to tell the story of Panama's unique biodiversity. It explores how human presence has impacted the region over time and highlights the different evolution of the Atlantic and Pacific regions. The museum takes a more abstract approach, offering a fresh perspective on the interconnectedness of all species.
I came for the architecture, but was really impressed with the exhibits and especially the helpful staff. Unlike in other museums where people are just there to tell you not to touch anything, staff greet you when you enter the room and help to explain the exhibits or answer questions. Exhibits flow through both indoor and outdoor spaces, and there are also lots of screens, videos, and interactive displays.
Grant M — Google review
Really nice place to visit. Architecture is modern and colourful. Permanent exhibitions provide a unique portrait of Central American biological diversity status. I like the most the fish tanks showing the difference between pacific and Atlantic Ocean.
Cristhiam M — Google review
Cool little stop. Walked around in the free area. Then explored the grounds. Nice water views. To top it off, a passion fruit snowcone for a jot day relief.
Toni M — Google review
Remarkable museum, so many good sets, so much variety of knowledge and interesting set ups. Great museum for kids and adults as well. Interactivity, beauty and knowledge at all cornera.

It's $20 if you're not Panamanian, but it's worth the money. There is a small coffee shop/Cafe there. There are staff in every exhibit that speak English and Spanish and will tell you about the exhibits! Nice air conditioning too.

I learnt so much!! Such an amazing and interactive experience; hands down one of the best museums I've visited in Panama! Suitable for adults and kids, also disabled person friendly. Highly recommend.
Tamara N — Google review
Amaaaazing experience at the Biomuseo! From the ticket counter to the exit, the hospitality was wonderful. As a first-time visitor to Panama, I loved sharing this with my kids—the welcome video was such a cool introduction. Section 3’s seating area, with its breathtaking mountain views, was absolutely gorgeous and one of my favorite spots. You can easily spend 2–3 hours here with kids. The museum is clean, well-maintained, and staffed by friendly, helpful people. The exhibits were both fun and educational—the history on Earth’s air in particular was invaluable. Easily one of my favorite attractions in Panama, and I would absolutely visit again.

Mountain peak
Ancon Hill, a prominent natural landmark in Panama City, offers a refreshing escape into nature within the urban environment. The hill is home to a nature reserve where visitors can spot sloths, deer, and other wildlife as they hike through the rainforest. As you ascend the hill, you'll be treated to stunning panoramic views of Panama Canal, Bridge of the Americas, Casco Viejo, and the modern cityscape.
One of the most memorable experience during my trip to Panama. Woke up early and hiked up the hill, arrived right before sunrise. I think it was about a 30 min walk. Ran into some Americans who were doing some missionary work. Once summiting the hill you are able to see the entire city from a panoramic perspective.
Lok W — Google review
The most memorable and greatest experience I have had in Panama. The view up here is breathtaking and so worth the one hour hike. It is truly spectacular.
Anthony P — Google review
Nice and easy hiking trail. Close to downtown. Overlook Panama city and the canal. There are plenty of platforms and benches to rest. Wonderful experience!
Jaz L — Google review
Beautiful place to escape the city! The hike up ancon hill is short and easy!
Gianluca P — Google review
Ancón Hill is a 199 metres (653 ft) high hill that overlooks Panama City, Panama, adjacent to the township of Ancón. Interesting walk through jungle and you might even see some animals. Not a difficult walk but the air temperature and humidity can increase discomfort.
Mr B — Google review
A fairly easy hike up. We came here in the morning so it was not that got yet. The best place to get a good look at the Canal with a nice pair of binoculars or zoom camera. The photos we took of the canal are from our zoom camera. If you're a patient, you will also see some Toucans! The speeds spinning three to four hours on a round trip to the canal
Eric W — Google review
This is an awesome walk. We got to the top and saw small monkeys. We were disappointed we couldn’t find a Sloth, then we did. He was awesome. You have to be patient and keep looking. They look like a termite ball up in the trees. We missed the Toucan’s but overall it was worth the hike. This was our last full day and the Sloth made the trip. This is a must do.
Terry W — Google review
I really enjoyed the walk up Ancon Hill. It's about 2m (~3.2k) round trip hike. The incline is gradual and doable. I would not recommend it for anyone with mobility challenges or who has issues being on their feet for significant stretches at a time. There are benches on the hike which makes things easier. We didn't see many animals on our visit, but the views are beyond spectacular!

National Parks
Metropolitan Natural Park, established in 1988, is an urban wildlife refuge located just outside the main Panama City area. It offers a variety of easy-to-moderate trails, picnic areas, and dedicated lookout points. As Central America's only protected tropical forest within city limits, it attracts nature enthusiasts and wildlife photographers seeking to capture the diverse flora and fauna.
What a magnificent place right in the middle of Panama. This place is magical ✨️ I love how the rays of the sun gently kissed the plants. The air is clean, crisp, and fresh. Lots of Fauna and Flora. Colorful butterflies. The breathtaking views made this an amazing experience. It costs $2 for locals.
G D — Google review
Metropolitan Natural Park was such a great stop! It’s only $5 to enter, and there are about 5 miles of trails to explore. We did the hike to the scenic overlook — about 3 miles round trip — and it was very family-friendly. It’s uphill, but not too steep or difficult. The views at the top are amazing, with a full panorama of Panama City and the sea dotted with ships waiting to enter the canal. We even saw some monkeys along the way! Highly recommend if you’re looking for an easy nature escape right near the city.
Cara H — Google review
Beautiful park, perfect for some hike. Be aware that when they say moderate to describe the intensity of the trail it really means intense for kids or elders.
Gonzalo ( — Google review
We arrived late - about 1/2 hour before official closing, but were told that we could go on one of the shorter trails if we were back by 5. Lovely walk, hot! But nice observation area at top of trail, and we saw an agouti(?) some turtles, butterflies, spiders, a small scorpion, and lots of cool flora. Go.
Sheila B — Google review
A hike easy enough for the whole family. Various routes that take about 1 - 2hrs to navigate observantly. Steepest part is the final 10mins to get above the canopy where the reward is the view. Can get hot and humid so bring water.
Lana G — Google review
We loved this park and seeing all the animals! Hated seeing the flying cockroaches, but everything else was awesome.
Janice E — Google review
A place in the city where you'll be in direct contact with nature and watch some charming species like the agouti (locally called ñeque) and sloths, besides a number of birds, turtles, insects and flowering plants.

Visitor center
The Miraflores Visitor's Center is a must-visit attraction near the Panama Canal, offering a fascinating experience for visitors. It features informative museum displays showcasing the history of the canal and provides an opportunity to witness ships passing through the locks from observation decks. Situated close to popular tourist spots like Casco Antiguo and the Causeway, it also boasts being in proximity to one of the world's largest malls.
You’d think that this is just a tourist trap, but it was actually incredible. Definitely stop by if you are in Panama City! The IMAX movie did not disappoint and seeing some ships come in was the cherry on top of a great experience. I would recommend getting tickets online so you don’t have to wait in the line.
Janice E — Google review
I hope that the present day two-story platform and its observation deck are just temporary, until the renovations to the five-story building next door are done. A call to The visitors Center did not clarify any doubts as the representative told me that this new observation deck may continue as a permanent replacement. The website does not clarify any details either. This is bad news as the building next door had an observation deck on the top floor. That view was fantastic. However this new two-story platform is a big step down as it lacks a roof to protect you from the Sun and rain. On top of that the staircase is too narrow causing foot traffic bottlenecks by the people congregating there. You will have to fight for a good view of the ships passing by especially when there are large crowds. Man what a disappointment from what is to be a great experience. I did not visit the theater this time around but I do recall having a good experience previously. The staff is well trained and helpful. Parking lot is spacious. This is the most famous canal in the world. So not surprisingly it is the country's most popular tourist attraction. So despite the disappointing platform this place remains a must-see for everyone
Panama G — Google review
Visiting the Miraflores Locks in Panama is an unforgettable experience and easily one of the country’s most impressive attractions. Whether you’re fascinated by engineering, history, or simply want to witness something truly unique in action, the locks offer a front-row seat to one of the greatest feats of human ingenuity. The visitor center is very well organized, guiding you through the history and construction of the Panama Canal, as well as the immense global impact it continues to have on maritime trade. The multimedia exhibits are engaging and accessible, even if you’re not an engineer or history buff. The highlight, of course, is stepping out onto the viewing platform to watch the massive ships cross through the locks. Seeing these gigantic vessels slowly rise or descend as the water levels change is both mesmerizing and humbling. The process feels almost choreographed, and the narration over the speakers helps visitors understand each stage. If you time your visit right, you can see several ships passing in both directions, which makes the experience even more impressive. Miraflores also offers a small theater with a well-produced film about the canal’s past, present, and expansion project. The restaurant overlooking the locks is another bonus—imagine enjoying lunch while watching cargo ships and cruise liners glide by just meters away. Overall, Miraflores Locks is a must-see attraction in Panama City. It’s educational, visually impressive, and genuinely awe-inspiring. Anyone visiting Panama—even for a short layover—should make the time to experience this iconic landmark.
Rudy G — Google review
Amazing experience at the center. I would recommend to go from 3:30-4pm onwards as it was very packed when we came. At 5pm we were almost alone and there were many boats passing by. We loved the speakers commenting on the boat passing.
Joanie — Google review
MUST see …. Close to Panama City center. Worth the 2 hours. Very informative. And pretty inspiring. Aside from physically watching a ship pass thru the locks, there is an excellent 30-minute movie detailing the construction and use of the Panama Canal in 3D. The facility is wheelchair accessible. Although many people, the crowd is manageable.
Bryan S — Google review
The main draw is the Miraflores Locks, and seeing them in person gives you a clear sense of the scale and engineering behind the canal. There are viewing platforms are set up and you can actually watch ships move through the locks at eye level. It’s busy—crowds, school trips, tourists—but it runs smoothly and there’s enough space to see what’s going on. At the Miraflores Visitor Center, there’s a large IMAX/3D-theatre that shows a documentary film about the Panama Canal. The film is narrated by Morgan Freeman. Overall a must see when visiting Panama City.
Katherine J — Google review
Best locks in town. Excellent IMAX too — Morgan Freeman is the ultimate understated hype-man of all time. Place is great — it is a wonder they let any of us visit at all!
Nicholas R — Google review
It was great to see the big ships going through the locks. Very impressive. But there should be two prices: one for seeing the film and the locks, and another for just the locks.

Grocery store
Albrook Mall is the largest shopping center in Panama, conveniently located near the Albrook Gran Terminal. It offers a wide range of amenities including a hotel, casino, bars, supermarket, and various dining options. The mall boasts spacious passages and stadium-type cinemas with a capacity for 2,500 people. With completely air-conditioned department and brand stores, it also provides 5,000 parking spaces with strict security measures in place.
I love this mall. It was my first time visiting. I was immediately impressed and in love. Lots of huge department stores. Well-known brand name stores. And for a true shopaholic, deals, sales and bargains galore. There is something for everyone (shopping, casino, movies, bowling, grocery, pharmacy, foodie etc al) Lots of walking There was a train but we didn't use it We stayed 5 days and did not get to visit alot of the mall, especially the side with the super 99 store. It's really bustling on Saturdays Nice and calm during the week I'm definitely going back I recommend to anyone who needs retail therapy.
KV J — Google review
This is the largest mall in Central America and it has a lot stores. You have to plan your day properly because you can spend hours there shopping lol. There were a few cheap stores but keep in mind the material might not worth the cost for some items. I got some shorts and I love them.
Tasheika M — Google review
Visiting Albrook Mall in the evening was an unforgettable experience this place is enormous and full of life, even as the sun went down! The energy was electric, with crowds of people taking advantage of the mall’s endless shopping options. I was amazed by the variety, from well known brands to budget friendly local stalls, all offering great deals that made browsing even more exciting. The playful themed sections, like the elephant area, added a fun and unique touch, making it stand out from any other mall. Even in the evening, the sheer size of the place was impressive you could easily spend hours here and still not see everything! Arrive with time to spare! Whether you come in the morning or evening, Albrook Mall is a retail paradise with unbeatable prices. But at night, it takes on a vibrant, bustling atmosphere that makes shopping feel like an adventure. Don’t miss out this is the ultimate spot for great finds and endless exploration!

History Museums
The Panama Canal Museum is a museum located in the heart of Casco Viejo in Panama City, which traces the history of the building of the Panama Canal, as well as its present-day operations. The museum is home to a wide range of exhibits on the canal's construction, its role in international shipping, and its importance to Panamanian history.
The Panama Canal Museum offers a captivating and comprehensive exploration of one of the world's greatest engineering feats. Located in the heart of Panama City, this museum brings to life the remarkable story of the Panama Canal, from its ambitious beginnings to its lasting impact on global trade and Panama itself. The museum's exhibits are thoughtfully curated and engaging, using a variety of mediums to tell the canal's story. Historical artifacts, interactive displays, and detailed models illustrate the challenges faced during construction, the human cost, and the incredible ingenuity required to overcome them. You'll learn about the visionaries who conceived the canal, the laborers who built it, and the political and economic forces that shaped its destiny. The museum doesn't shy away from the difficult aspects of the canal's history, including the yellow fever epidemic and the complex relationship between Panama and the United States. The museum building itself, a beautiful colonial-era structure, adds to the overall experience. The staff are knowledgeable and passionate, eager to answer questions and provide further insights. Whether you're a history buff, an engineering enthusiast, or simply curious about this iconic landmark, the Panama Canal Museum is an absolute must-see. It's an educational, moving, and ultimately inspiring experience that will leave you with a deep appreciation for the Panama Canal's significance. Overall, the Panama Canal Museum is an exceptional museum experience that I highly recommend. It's a place where you can learn, reflect, and be amazed by the story of the Panama Canal.
Jeff F — Google review
I enjoyed my experience at this museum and spent about a couple hours walking through the exhibits and reading about the history of Panama and the canal. It was great to learn about how the canal was built as well as the true stories of how workers were recruited and treated during the construction of the locks. I especially enjoyed the exhibit on the flora and fauna of the country.
James J — Google review
This museum offers very informative and nicely presented items on the canal history, in a beautifully restored historic building in old town Panama City. I enjoyed visiting this museum and highly recommend while in the area. There are numerous exhibits and informative items very well presented. It changed my perspective as to how incredible the canal project was. No problem finding parking and many stores/ restaurants nearby.
Bridgett ( — Google review
Although the museum is being revamped, visiting the Miraflores Locks is an unforgettable, world-class experience that absolutely deserves five stars. This iconic location offers one of the most impressive engineering spectacles on the planet, and seeing it in person is both fascinating and inspiring. From the moment you arrive, the organization, cleanliness, and professionalism of the staff set the tone for a memorable visit. The viewing platforms provide excellent angles of the ships transiting through the locks, allowing you to witness the full operation up close—the massive gates opening, the water levels adjusting, and vessels of all sizes navigating with incredible precision. It is a rare opportunity to truly appreciate the scale and genius behind the Panama Canal’s construction and continued operation. If you time your visit well, you can see cargo ships, cruise liners, and even naval vessels passing through. The visitor center and museum are equally impressive, offering detailed exhibits, historical artifacts, interactive displays, and a film that puts the entire canal story into perspective. Everything is presented in a clear and engaging way that appeals to both adults and younger visitors. The facility is well maintained, with clean spaces, good signage, and efficient organization. The restaurant upstairs offers a great view of the locks, making it a perfect spot to enjoy a meal while watching ships pass by. Overall, the Miraflores Locks provide a five-star experience that blends education, history, engineering, and breathtaking views. It is an absolute must-visit attraction in Panama City and one that leaves visitors with a deep appreciation for this marvel of human ingenuity.
Rudy G — Google review
The history of Panama is the history of the canal. The first floor is being renovated. The second and third floors have the bulk of the displays. The staff is friendly and helpful. Locals pay $5 tourists $15. Very interesting and worth the time to see.
Rick G — Google review
FYI, there is no movie here, like others have mentioned in reviews. It is, however, a very informative & well designed museum. It speaks extensively to the history of not just the region where the canal was built, but also the country itself! This is NOT at the canal, and there’s no movie here; that’s all at the actual canal, this museum is in the beautiful historic part of the city.
Elena R — Google review
This has to be one of the best museums I have visited in Central / South America and perhaps the world! It was $15 to enter for foreigners and it has two floors of exhibitions. Unfortunately, the first floor was closed for renovation when we were there but there is still more than enough information upstairs to keep you busy. It starts taking you through the history of the indigenous communities in the area, through the colonisation period to the building of the canal. The information is written in both Spanish and English!! It is quite information heavy but also houses a lot of artefacts from both older and modern times. In conclusion, it’s a must do if you are visiting Panama City and want an introduction to the country and its canal.

Mercado De Marisco Cinta Costera, also known as the fish market, is a seafood haven in Panama City. It features over 70 stalls offering the freshest seafood and provides an opportunity for visitors to handpick their own seafood and have it prepared in the open-air restaurant located above the market hall. The market offers a variety of raw seafood sold by the pound indoors, while outside there are about 20 ceviche and fish stands serving cooked food at affordable prices.
The atmosphere was good. The food was fresh and good. We had a good time. I will come back again.
Judith A — Google review
I don't like eating with bugs too many biting insects there. I went to a restaurant I will post the picture. This is a place that screws tourists with prices. Lobster was chewy as hell
Karen B — Google review
Not at all the "Must do" thing suggested in blogs. It pales in comparison to fish markets elsewhere in the world. It's relatively small, not very busy and a bit underwhelming and boring. The good thing is foreigners probably don't buy anything, they just go to look, so no one hassles you. You can get food whilst there in the outside, covered restaurants downstairs. Chose wisely. I went to Allison restaurant and it was expensive and not great.
D — Google review
The food was awesome. The right vendor will walk you to the market to pick out your own fresh still alive seafood and cook right there for you. With the garlic butter sauce. They only take cash so bring your money with you. You also get a free margarita or frozen drink of your choice.

This was one of my bucket list fish markets to visit. This market is exceptional with many cevisherias in the same building. If in Panama City, don't miss it.
Bryan K — Google review
Great fish market, early morning hours are bustling with locals getting fresh fish before the tourists trickling in. If you take the fish to the right vendor, they will cook it there for you. I purchased a lobster at the market and brought it to one of the restaurant and got it cooked with the garlic butter sauce. Definitely skip restaurant next to the fish market called Allison, they are rip off. Cash only so bring your money with you. 4/5 ⭐️

Fried whole Red snapper with Salsa de Camarones (Shrimp Sauce): sauce has a base of tomato, onion, pepper, and cream or coconut milk for richness. Shrimp, coconut rice, and a coleslaw. Along side is a jugo de passionfruit (blended passionfruit juice). Add Rosa, the best server with the prettiest smile and you have an amazing experience.
Darryl J — Google review
If you're gonna eat here go straight to Rosa from la Promesa, with her friendly smile good prices and excellent service, it will not disappoint! I had the pulpo in coconut sauce with a beer, fries and a small ceviche for 13 usd, everything included! Also, you can pay by credit card.

Punta Culebra Nature Center, situated on an island linked to Panama City by the Amador Causeway, is managed by the Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute. This center focuses on marine and terrestrial science, conservation, and interpretation of tropical coastal environments.
Beautiful grounds. Friendly, accommodating and professional staff. Exhibits are interesting and the Curiosity section is hands-on; featuring fossils, ceramics, shells, bones and more. (Just be careful!) The outside areas have beautiful views of the ocean. We saw wild Black Vultures drinking at a little water source that seems to be provided for them. We are multiple wild sloths. There were wild iguanas running around. The butterfly area was easily the best I have ever been to. Indoor aquarium area featured a very friendly Moray eel. Buildings were well air-conditioned and modern. Highly recommend this to anyone. Far better value than Biomuseo, in my opinion.

Great museum for kids of all ages, excellent presentations in multimedia. Everything is bilingual in English and Spanish. One of the best natural museums I visited. An hour to two is enough

Visited Punta Culebra today, it was a 10/10 experience! Very educational, the staff were sooo helpful and knowledgeable. So much wildlife to see, & interactive. Recommend bringing some water though, the forest area is hot ! The views are to die for, I would definitely recommend.

Visited here with my grandchildren ages 8, 3 & 1. They had a good time with the hands-on exhibits such as specimen microscope viewings. If the guides maybe talked them through what they were looking at such as with the starfish tank pool, it would be better as they cannot read the information about the animals written on the signs, I read some signs to them as they were asking questions. The frog & fish displays were so informative if you could read otherwise they were just pretty displays. I believed since this was under the prestige of the Smithsonian name, it would be amazing. However, the facilities were underwhelming. I expected more, larger up to date displays. The aquarium fish tanks were the size that a homeowner could have, again beautiful but I expected more. We did see a sloth, stingray, starfish, sharks & turtles. It took 1.5 hrs to get through the whole place, they were wanting more! Our plan was to visit the Biomuseum as well but it was closed because we got distracted at the playground and ate at the many shops and carnival rides in the same area. Again they enjoyed it but, it's not a long activity. Overall a good trip just small scale.

** PLEASE LIKE & SHARE OUR REVIEWS. ** If you have a day with nothing to do, this was a pretty cool experience. We were trying to decide between this and the Bio Museo. Our plan was to visit the center & ride the quad bikes at the Bio Museo but the rain chose otherwise. This center had so many unique species of frogs, we saw raccoons, iguanas and a sloth. In one exhibit they have biolluminescent coral. There were so many spaces for shady picnics and tons of interactive & hands on exhibits. This center is located in the beautifully landscaped Beverly Hills of Panama. It is about a 20 min drive from the International Airport if you pay your cabbie extra for the tarriff/toll route. Great for all ages. Most exhibits are wheelchair accesaible with some terrain challenges. Definitely worth the time and money to visit. The views along the walkway were gorgeous too. There is a vending machine with snacks & drinks in between the building exhibits.
Krissi F — Google review
Not a lot to see here honestly. Everything can be seen within a hr with a slow walking pace. There are small exhibits for frogs, fish/ nurse sharks, turtles, and an interactive space for touching or looking at native animal skeletons. If you're lucky you can spot a sloth hanging around in the wild. Butterfly cage was the coolest part of the exhibit. They are only open 1-4 on limited days.
Daena C — Google review
Definitely a cool place to visit if you’ve got time. Pretty property with sloths, small aquariums of fish, turtles, frogs, butterflies and starfish. The staff are all very kind and helpful. There is also a beautiful view point of Panama City from the end.

Paseo de Las Bóvedas, located in the Old Panama City (Casco Viejo), is a charming area with a lovely view of the new city and the ocean. The walkway is adorned with beautiful flowers and offers a picturesque spot for taking photos. It's a popular destination for both solo travelers and groups, providing ample opportunities to capture memorable moments. Visitors can explore artisan vendors selling indigenous art, jewelry, Panama hats, and traditional embroidery.
Lovely view from the new city and the ocean! But my favorite part was the stands full of handmade jewelry, souvenirs, Panama hats and traditional embroidery. I came back several times, it was just so fun to walk among different people.

Nice walk with cooling breeze. The historical part is just the old wall you’re walking on. The star of the show for me was the indigenous markets on the wall.

This is a lookout area at France Square which gives you the chance to take a panoramic view of Panama city as seen from here. It would be much better if you come during high tide and with low tide, the section of the sea does not look very nice.

A very good place in the Old Panama City (Casco Viejo) realm with many artists selling their creations in the Estevan Huerta. This is one of the artists named, Cesar. He draws creative illustrations on cotton t-shirts with a pen filled with bleach. The result is what you see on his shirts in the photos. The colors of his illustrations or drawings will change based on the t-shirt color's dye reacting to the bleach and how much emphasis (pen strokes) he applies. The more bleach strokes applied, the lighter the artwork color becomes and vice versa. He can do custom artwork, but it depends on exactly what it is. You will have to ask him exactly what you'd like though and he'd have to ok it in addition to the price as well. Drop by, say hello to Cesar, and see his aristic work at a very fair price as well

Casco Viejo, located in Panama City, is a captivating district that showcases the country's diverse architectural history. The area features charming colonial buildings with intricate details from the Spanish colonial era, as well as modern skyscrapers that reflect Panama's rapid growth and economic prosperity. Visitors can explore various architectural styles, from traditional Spanish colonial to contemporary designs incorporating sustainable materials and cutting-edge technology.
It was a great place , you feel the soul of there people are making music , childrens playing football people are like enjoying life regardless anything . SAYYED H — Google review
Modern trendy bars and restaurants, luxury hotels, cafes, museums, renovated facades, tourist shops. All sharing the streets with historic churches, colonial buildings, cobblestone streets and poverty. They all come together to form the liveliest, hippest tourist hotspot. Walking along the streets you will see that the new is replacing the old. Though it is fantastic that new facades are designed to stay true to the original classic designs. Well, it is a UNESCO site so it is incumbent upon the neighborhood to retain certain aesthetics. I see this as the only place in the city where you can roam aimlessly. You feel like you are in a small town outside away from the city. No skyscrapers, just buildings a few floors high. Plaza de la independencia is the center square where you will see masses of tourists visiting the church and museums. If you are a tourist, take advantage of your time here by trying out the shaved ice (raspao). The sellers walk around with their push carts, usually in the daytime, and sell flavored ice scraped off an ice block right in front of you. Make sure to top off your flavor of choice with condensed milk. You are seaside so enjoy the ocean. My favorite place is the paseo las bovedas which is a walkway on the far east side that overlooks the ocean. Tranquil, safe and away from loud music, from there you can see a postcard view of the city. As for restaurants, I love the ones with a full 360 degree rooftop view. The prices are high but the quality of food you get is quite fancy. Well, prices are high at most food establishments here. You will find residents who live in the old houses that are untouched by time. They can be seen along certain alleyways sitting in their front porch with their front doors open. Some are situated along the busy spots so you will likely walk right past them. Some moved away after selling their homes to be renovated as new businesses. Others have stayed which will remind you that before recent modernization, this place used to be a residential neighborhood. And still is. A couple of things are less than ideal. The trendy postcard area is still surrounded by dark streets along the far corners, especially westward. They will make you turn around once you see them. And streetside parking is difficult to find depending on the day of the week so you may have to park in one of the few paid parking lots.

This place is absolutely beautiful. It was such a delight going down each of the streets and looking at the older building and the beautiful square. It's always nice to see history considering that this was the original Panama, it definitely looks old but beautiful and well preserved. I was imagining how it looked originally back in the day, it looks very romantic and a nice place to visit and sit out for coffee or a nice meal. The streets are quaint and narrow. It's like it's own city within the city.

Restaurant
Fonda Lo Que Hay is a hidden gem located in Panama City's old town center, Casco Antiguo. This unassuming cafeteria offers fantastic food with a daily menu based on fresh seafood. The industrial-style setting adds to its charm, and the menu features eight dishes inspired by Panamanian cuisine with a subtle mix of diverse cultures and tastes.
During our stay in Panama, Fonda Lo Que Hay was hands down the best restaurant we visited. The flavors here are authentic and uniquely Panamanian, executed with impressive creativity and skill. We ordered 4–5 dishes to share, and each one was better than the last. An absolute “must try” is the cassava with tuna, which literally melts in your mouth. The mondongo was on another level, rich and full of character. The coconut rice struck the perfect balance—flavorful but not overly sweet. The catch of the day, baked in the oven, was a true highlight: fresh, natural, and packed with vibrant flavors. The clams were also incredibly fresh, something you notice right away with the first bite. When it comes to cocktails, every drink exceeded our expectations—creative, well-balanced, and beautifully presented. Clearly, this is a concept that’s been carefully thought through from start to finish. What really stood out was that, even with the place completely full, the kitchen team worked seamlessly together: well-organized, efficient, and making sure plates came out in good time. That kind of harmony speaks to passion and dedication. In our opinion, this restaurant deserves to be on the radar for a Michelin star thanks to its quality, creativity, and consistency. 100% recommended. We’ll definitely be coming back on our next trip to Panama.

I came here for lunch and ordered the “Sexy Clams” - absolutely delicious! The flavors were perfectly balanced. It was truly outstanding. I also ordered a side of bread that came toasted with butter, which was perfect for dipping into the broth. I enjoyed my meal so much that I came back to try the tuna tostada everyone raves about, but unfortunately, it didn’t quite live up to the hype for me. It was good, just not as impressive as my first meal.
Rasha — Google review
Lovely experience at a place recommended by a lot of friends. Honestly, it wasn’t my top two spots in Panama, but the steak was our favorite, so tender and delicious. The salads were a bit salty and acidic, even though they said no salt is added. The service was outstanding, and the staff were clearly helpful and friendly. Overall, it really comes down to personal taste, so it’s worth trying for yourself. Just make sure to reserve at least 2–3 nights in advance!

Fonda Lo Que Hay Beautiful venue and entrance, love a big door and they had one that opened in a cool way! Service was quick and attentive! Servers spoke in both Spanish and English. The kitchen is open concept so you can see everything that’s going on, very cool! We ordered a few things: Tuna Cassava Tostada 8.9/10: Buttery, creamy, rich! The pickled onion salsa on the side added the acidity needed to make this dish hit the spot! Love the concept of a crispy bed underneath a carpaccio. Og Fish empanadas 8.1/10: Crispy and oozing with cheese! Amazing dips on the side as well. Would recommend as a nice light started. Grilled Oysters 4.5/10: Nothing against the dish just wasn’t our cup of tea! Tried to explain that they didn’t do anything wrong just wasn’t for us. Was very heavy on the smoke flavour made it hard to eat. They did end up taking this off our bill as we didn’t eat much of it but we didn’t expect it to be taken off nor did we ask. So A+ in customer service. Beef Guacho 7.8/10: Overall pretty solid and tasty dish! Only criticisms would be that it’s very heavy, and you aren’t given enough chip to dip ratio. Also the cups get quite soggy before you get the chance to eat them. Overall would try them out again!

Nice lively restaurant in Casco Antiguo. Visited Wed 22 Oct. Good cocktails and the food is amazing. The Pig Leg Sandwich is easily top3 things I've put in my mouth in the 5 days I have been in Panama. Limited vegetarian options - but the mushroom curry rice dish was amazing. RECOMMEND.
Tarun Y — Google review
I ordered a pork sandwich, my partner ordered a beef gaucho. The waitress said "Just for you to know the gaucho is quick but you need to wait 25 mins for the sandwich". 25 minutes for a sandwich?! Insane! The back part of the restaurant feels like a fancy cafe, the small front part (where we sat) is more of a formal restaurant. So make sure you book ahead and request the front room. The food was delicious even if I didn't eat what I went for because I didn't want to wait 25 minutes for a sandwich. The service was fine.

The Museo De Panama Viejo is a small museum housing pre-Hispanic and Hispanic-era finds from the adjacent Panama Viejo archaeological site. The museum is a cultural landmark with much history to share. The sea front was awesome. After 1530 they will stop entry so be sure to follow the timings if you are planning on visiting.
This is a great museum to learn about Panama city history. A lot of of ancient ruins and a you can actually climb the tower. It was 17 dollars in enter, but I used my UNLV student ID and got a discount and only paid 7. They offer discounts to college students. You can walk the trail to the museum but I recommend the tram, its a little ways and it is hot and humid if your not used to it. I loved it. Totally recommend Panama Viejo!
Denise G — Google review
If you are interested in the early history of the Americas, Panama Viejo is a must-see attraction for anyone in the vicinity. While British pirates did a very effective job of destroying the old city, the ruins that remain are evocative, especially the beautifully restored stone tower which looks over the site. Allow around 2 hours to see the site and the fine museum. My only complaint is the steep entry fee of $17.
Raymond L — Google review
This is a very nice historical site for Panama, but the price is far too expensive for a USD$17 ticket, in comparison to the worldwide historical sites. In my opinion, if you want to learn the history, visit a website or YouTube. Not worth paying this hefty ticket for a 30-60 min trip, just very few ruins left. Sorry Panama, didn't mean to offend you.
Happylewis T — Google review
I recently visited Panama Viejo and overall, it was a nice experience. The site offers some beautiful views and a fascinating glimpse into Panama’s history. Walking among the ancient ruins and learning about the past was truly special. However, I felt that the entrance fee of $17 is a bit too expensive for what’s available. There wasn’t enough information provided in English, which made it difficult to fully appreciate the site unless you speak Spanish. Additionally, some of the staff I interacted with were quite rude when I asked questions, which was disappointing. Panama Viejo is worth a visit for its historic significance and scenery, but there is room for improvement in visitor service and informational resources—especially for international tourists.
Antonis A — Google review
The visit starts at the bookstore, which was a nice touch. A tram takes you down to the museum—small but interesting, and it doesn’t take long to go through. Afterward, you can explore the ruins. We spent most of our time at the main tower, which stands about six stories tall with over 100 steps and 3 levels. The climb is worth it—at the top, you get an incredible view of the city ruins, the skyline, and the beaches. I highly recommend making it to the top. We didn’t explore much beyond the tower, but the site is much larger than I expected. There is also a small gift shop by the museum. Entry was around $15 for foreigners, $10 for locals, and $2 for kids. Plan to spend at least 90 minutes or more here.

It is a great place to stroll and see the sights. It's very walkable, and there is also a dedicated bike lane, so it is pedestrian friendly. There are occasional street sellers of iced treats and juices in addition to the shops on the islands. Make reservation and ask if it's a party of 3 not to be seated on a table of 2.. Appetizers, drinks 🍸, napkins, more Appetizers is very hard to eat.. Also Sushi 🍣 is made with rice not plantain fusion and flavorless ( not recommended). The bartenders are very polite and servers can be more attentive towards your stay. They do are polite and courteous but they forget your table time to time... Djs are the touch of cocktails hours so it's nice to have good music 🎶.

The food, atmosphere and service was top notch. I didn’t like the taste of the pumpkin soup it more tasted like curry to me and there was too much of something that my tastebuds refused, so one sip and I was done. Perhaps they should offer smaller portions as I just needed something warm but that definitely wasn’t it. Everyone else enjoyed their appetizers which was great. Not long after my fish meal arrived. The fish however was great and the complimentary starters served in a coconut shell . Very creative with a distinct dip that I would definitely recommend.

A beautiful rooftop bar in Casco Viejo serving delicious drinks and food (I didn't eat here). The view offers a panorama of the neighborhood as well as the sea and city. Service was great and there are other restaurants below as well worth checking out.

This place was absolutely amazing. We checked out the rooftop. They're a few restaurants in this building. The entire area is lively at night. Our server was gracia. She was pleasant and our food and drinks were timely. I love the whole vibe here. Need to possibly come back during the day. Our first night in panama did not disappoint. The Uber ride from ramada to here was under $5.

The neighborhood of this restaurant is such a cool place. I love the historic aspects of Casco Viejo. It's very Spaniard in the design with excellent red brick streets. The restaurant itself is in building shared between 3 restaurants. We ordered the Panamanian Grill. This dish came with chicken, pork, steak, and sausage accompanied with petacones and french fries. The duo of dipping sauces to go along with them is ketchup and some sort of chimichurri with mango dip. The french fries were really good, very much of a McDonald's shoestring style of french fry which is always nice because it's hard to just eat one at a time. Salt level was good and fitting for the fries. The petacones were decent, but maybe my least favorite thing from the dish (but, I still enjoyed them). Steak was decent quality and cooked just fine; same goes for the chicken. They give you an on the house petacones fries that come on top of Himalayan salt with some sort of citrus dipping sauce that looks like a queso, but tastes somewhat like mango or pineapple. It was definitely unlike anything I've ever tasted, but in a good way. I had my first Panamanian beer (Balboa) which was nice. It was a little dryer than I was expecting, but I enjoyed it. Their Tropical Fresh sangria was made very well with nice fruits garnishing the glass. Definitely a place I recommend. The bar was surrounded by sand and the bartop had a fishtank tube from one side to the other. Petacones fries with Sauce: 7/10 Panamanian Grill: 8/10 Fries 9/10 Petacones: 6/10 Sangria: 9/10 Overall: 8/10

Located conveniently, it offers local favorites such as ropa vieja, cazuelo de mariscos, and sancocho. The restaurant also provides inexpensive set lunches and typical Panamanian breakfasts featuring dishes like bistec encebollado, tortillas, and carimanolas.

The cozy atmosphere and friendly service make it even better. El Trapiche is a must-visit for anyone who wants a true taste of Panama. You won’t regret it!

Simple sophistication is the best way to describe this place. The authenticity of the Panamanian cuisine seems to be important here; more effort seems to be spent on delivering traditionally aligned dishes and flavors, than trying to please the taste buds of the masses, which is very endearing. Consistent service quality and great location.

I’m giving all stars because my experience at El Trapiche was fantastic. The staff welcomed me with big smiles, making me feel instantly at home. I had the Ceviche, which was fresh and delicious, and the Sancocho was authentic and full of heart warming flavor.s My only wish is that the chicken were a bit more tender and free of tiny soft bones. Overall, I was extremely happy with my visit. P.s. Don’t forget to ask for the Picante de la Casa (the spicy sauce of the house)… amazing

The Metropolitan Cathedral Basilica of Santa Maria the Ancient, completed in 1796 after a century of construction, is a stunning stone church with imposing twin bell towers. Situated in Panama City's Old Town on Independence Square, this historic edifice began construction in 1688 and was consecrated in 1796. Despite surviving an earthquake that destroyed neighboring buildings in the late 19th century, it has been recently restored and stands as one of Central America's largest churches.
Beautiful cathedral that is right at the center of the old city square. Very near to the Panama Canal museum and free to enter. Gorgeous inside and out, definitely recommend stopping by.

I suggest getting a tour (there are guides inside the church that will tell you about the place for a tip). I went there on my own a few years back without a guide and recently with a guide and what a difference. I got a whole new perspective with the information from the local guides. There is an exhibit about the Millennial Saint.

Tucked away amidst lush greenery in Coco del Mar, Maito offers a unique dining experience with its globally inspired fusion cuisine that showcases traditional dishes like langoustine tule masi, a stew from the indigenous Kuna tribe made with coconut and plantains.
We had a very lovely experience, a couple of friends were visiting Panama and we took them to Maito. We all had the tasting menu, which was amazing. We had tried the tasting menu a year ago and didn’t love it, this time around they elevated the menu and each plate was better than the last one. Good value for your money. Our waiter was great, explained every dish in English which made the experience for our guests even better.

Outstanding food and service on their beautiful patio. The menu is a bit intimidating, with no specific descriptions of the dishes, but our server described each dish to us in detail, helped us determine how many dishes we should order to share, and recommended several dishes that we enjoyed. Cocktails were creative, tasty and beautifully presented. We would return in a heartbeat.

This was my girlfriend's favorite restaurant in the city. She loved how the seafood was prepared, and this stands out because she eats seafood nearly every meal. The prices were quite affordable considering the quality. I had vegetarian dishes, and they were rich and delicious, just not on the same level as her plates.

Went to maito for the tasting menu. It was overall exceptional. There were ~9 courses. The soup was beyond expectations. The small bites were good but not the standouts. We had three seafood main courses each increasingly better. The desserts were top notch. Eqch course had unique ingredients and a story to Panamá and the cuisine of the country. Our waiter was friendly and smiling and seemed genuinely excited to share the food with us. We sat outside on the patio since the weather was so nice in Panama in December at night. Decor is simple but elegant. Definitely recommend if you have the time and want a tasty and elegant meal in Panama.

First time visiting Panama and first meal was here. What an absolutely incredible gastrointestinal experience. This place is an absolute MUST! The flavors were so incredible and perfectly balanced. You must experience their menu. Chef even came out and made recommendations for the vegan in our party. We made sure to even try a dessert even though we were beyond satisfied with all of our meals. Very very memorable experience. Thank you so much for starting our trip off on a high note!!!

Had the tasting menu. Great for dates or groups. Generally very good, probably the best in Panama and surely the best with Caribbean and Chinese mix. Some plates were delicious like the Fish and Pork, the Dim Sum with Afro-Caribbean touch some were a bit more so-so (good but not delicious). I think they could work a bit more on textures and take more risks. Deserts were very good but lacked a WOW effect. Service was ok but not as good as you would expect from fine dining (interrupted several times by waiters, they took dishes too quickly, some explanations were not as detailed, etc.).

Nestled in the historic Casco Viejo district of Panama City, the Arco Chato, or Flat Arch, stands as a remarkable remnant of the Church and Convent of Santo Domingo. This iconic stone archway stretches an impressive 15 meters without any central supports, showcasing incredible engineering from its time.
These ruins are of a monastery and you can enter from the side and walk around. As you do you'll find another gate you can enter that leads to a courtyard. This is free to visit and worth a few minutes as you're exploring the old town.

Magnificent ruin and a must see but the history behind is great and I don’t get that there is no sign explaining the background. Okay you can goggle the thing but it would not take a lot of efforts to have a sign in front. There is one telling you where you are in the old city but not a peep about about the « miracle » behind this great piece of architecture. Read that they will build a replica since it is falling apart.

MAC Panamá, also known as the Museum of Contemporary Art, is a modest yet significant museum in Panama City. It is dedicated to showcasing modern and contemporary art from Panamanian and Latin American artists. The museum's permanent collection boasts over 700 exhibits accumulated over 50 years. Housed in a mock Spanish-colonial building near Reserva Cerro Ancon, MAC offers regular exhibitions, shows, and art performances.
I came into the museum and Edgar offered a tour for an additional 5 dollars. Despite not knowing Spanish, he gave a fantastic tour of the exhibitions and I learned a lot (especially about the indigenous population in Panama). Highly recommended!
Jun Y — Google review
I was here about a year ago, so I wasn't sure, if I wanted to go see the museum again. But yesterday I stumbled over the small satellite they have in the Casco Antigua, and that was completely worth the visit, so today I went again to the main exhibition. Admittedly the directrice had a most charming and persuasive way about her as well, and every single member of her staff I met and talked to was super helpful and pleasant. They certainly added something to the overall experience. So how was it? Lovely. Accessible. Inspiring. Sure, the Panama Museum of Contemporary Art isn't the Guggenheim, but it's a place that inspires and fascinates in its own way, as much as one of the more famous museums do. It's not especially big, but I must have been there almost two hours, I think, and if I had more time, I could spend days and weeks in the museum's fascinating library. Which incidentally is free, from what I was told. Definitely worth at least one visit.

If you’re expecting any type of colorful contemporary art, you won’t find it here. $10 each for 2 of us. They had some very scientific prints and was about as bland of a museum I’ve ever been to. We love art, we love visiting these places in different countries, we tried our best to slow down and appreciate but we were through this entire place in 12 minutes. Trip advisor says 1-2 hours which is just not true at all. The $20 may as well been a direct donation to the arts which I hope it is but it was a waste of time for sure. The gentleman at the front was super nice, he did mention they switch out the artist twice a year so maybe we just went at a really bad time but you’ll see more art walking Casco Viejo than you will here. The best part of this place was the coffee shop because they at least had some beautiful prints on display that were for sale.
Martin F — Google review
So glad I went! As interesting as a visit to a contemporary art museum in New York City, although of course it is a small gallery with just a few rooms. A lot will depend on which special shows they are doing. The three on show when I went were both cutting edge and unapologetically Panamanian/Caribbean, one on Panama’s environment, one riffing off of the indigo dye as part of the Black Atlantic (with nods to both Paul Gilroy and Homi Bhabha), and a third about the goofy, bold vernacular art of Panama City’s “red devil” buses. I went on a weekday and it seemed like I was the museum’s only visitor, which is too bad—they deserve a lot more.

Wow, MAC has been an absolute highlight of my trip to Panama City. Some very thought-provoking exhibits about the environment, culture and los diablos rojos. Edgar and Laura were working the front desk and I had an absolutely lovely conversation with them about the museum and art in general in Panama. Park was clean, safe, and fun to walk. It is not all a flat surface that kept the walk fun/challenging. It was overcast when we went, but there are still plenty of trees that provide shade. Very cool spot in the middle of the city.
Darrell B — Google review
By far the most frequented park in the city and quite possibly in the country. Spacious and situated in a dense part of the metropolis. It features an abundance of activities, event spaces, sports facilities and pool. Entrance is free but you will have to pay for most activities. If you know about New York's central park, then meet our version of it. Although you can relax on the lawn and enjoy the sun, seems like most people are not here to do that. Instead, they are either walking, jogging, bicycling, or partaking in an activity. This is very much an active park. There are a few kiosks at the entrance that sell food. There is even a public library towards the middle of the park. One of my favorite things about this park are the rolling hills. You cannot see its entirety from any point because it is not flat. Instead, you will have to walk over one hill to see another. This is most evident when using the tracks which extend for more than three kilometers in a circle. The parking lot will accommodate most cars during the day. But you will start to run out of luck if you arrive after five in the afternoon or on the weekend. I saw only one small facility with a few bathrooms. No toilet paper so bring your own. Their website has a lot of information pertaining to activities.

One of the most famous attractions in Panama is the Miraflores Locks, part of the Panama Canal. This engineering marvel opened in 1913 and has had a significant impact on global commerce and weather patterns. The locks use gravity to move ships between the Caribbean Sea and the Pacific Ocean, with 14,000 ships passing through annually. Visitors can witness this impressive feat at the Miraflores Visitor Center, where they can observe ships being raised or lowered as water levels are adjusted.
The canal is the pride of our country and this display does some justice to the engineering masterpiece that the canal truly is. The video presentation with Morgan Freeman is very educational as well as uplifting about the nation as a whole. The viewing center is also very nice you can see ships passing thorough this older lock and see massive vessels up very close. For little ones there is a nice covered playground to keep them from getting too restless.
Roderick B — Google review
Loved my visit. Beware that most ships pass earlier in the morning or around 2pm in the afternoon. If you arrive around noon (like I did last, you'll have to wait a bit). There is a movie narrated by Morgan Freeman and is a must-watch. It teaches you all about the history of the Panama Canal. There are also plenty of food options, I got popcorn for the movie ($3), and an iced coffee. They were both really good. I would give it 5 stars if I could have found better information of ship passage timings. I searched their website and couldn't find anything about it.
Stephanie S — Google review
Miraflores Locks is an extraordinary destination that fully deserves five stars for its impressive blend of engineering marvel, history, and immersive visitor experience. Located along the iconic Panama Canal, this site offers a front-row view of one of the world’s most remarkable feats of human ingenuity. Watching massive ships rise and descend through the locks is truly captivating, especially with the clear explanations provided over loudspeakers and in the visitor center. The facilities are excellent. The viewing platforms offer multiple angles, making it easy to appreciate every moment of the lock operations. The museum is modern, informative, and engaging, with well-designed exhibits that explain the canal’s construction, evolution, and global importance. Interactive displays add even more depth, making it an ideal stop for families, students, and travelers who want to learn while enjoying the experience. Staff members are friendly and knowledgeable, always willing to answer questions or guide visitors through the exhibits. The on-site theater is another highlight, offering a well-produced film that enriches the visit. Whether you’re fascinated by history, engineering, or simply want to witness a unique spectacle, Miraflores Locks is a must-visit attraction. It captures the spirit of Panama and leaves you with a deep appreciation for what humanity can achieve.
Rudy G — Google review
This is one of Panama’s most iconic sites, where numerous vessels pass through each day following a fascinating and precise protocol. The engineering that makes this operation possible is truly impressive and makes you wonder how such a feat was achieved so many years ago. However, the tourist lookout could benefit from increased capacity. On my visit it was raining, and a covered area would have been very helpful, as the viewpoint had no roof. If you’re traveling through Panama with a layover of five hours or more, this is an excellent place to visit. It’s approximately 35–45 minutes by car from Tocumen Airport, or about one hour by public transportation.
Wash C — Google review
A highlight of world travel. The journey thru the canal is just amazing. IT is slow but allows time to absorb the experience. There is a slit that defines the original(old) locks and the new ones. Hope to go on the old locks next time through.

A must see if you are in Panama city. It was so informative and very well presented. Make sure you time your visit to see a ship going through the locks.
Kate W — Google review
A MUST visit if in Panama for a day. Extremely informative and actually surprisingly interesting experience. Note - viewable crossings occur from 8-10am and 2-4pm. So plan accordingly. The canal is but a 20-30 minute drive from the city center. Very accessible. Takes about 1.5 to 2 hours between watching the locks operate and ships pass and watching the IMAX documentary. The 3D movie is extremely informative and entertaining for both kids and adults with many trivia points detailing the canal from concept, construction, operations and management. The facility is wheelchair accessible and the staff is very friendly and accommodating.

Provided all details for a health-check and made an appointment for a specific day and time. This was only to arrive and be asked all the details all over again. Pretty much as if I had arrived on a whim, out of nowhere. What was the purpose of actually scheduling a service? Car had two problems I was aware off, but took it for a second opinion. In a 24-48 hours period, long enough for a through test, they didn't noticed some of the seat buttons didn't worked or the alarms created by disconnecting the seat module without unplugging the battery. What did you guys really do in those 24-48hrs? An item was missing from the car (luckily inexpensive). I called back the rep, he said he'll check and call me back. Needless to say I wasn't called back.. The only pro is that I now know not to service any of my cars here in the future. Seriously.. take a look at some of the comments on facebook. They even cut corners on things that should've been a recall (wish I had checked those first).

Casco Viejo, also known as the Old Town, is a historic neighborhood in Panama City that was established in 1673. The area features a reticular layout with streets and shutters pointing towards the four cardinal points, making it a classic example of an Indian city. The architecture is a beautiful mix of old buildings, offering stunning views especially during sunset.
Casco Antiguo/ Casco Viejo/ San Felipe has many names, but the history, diverse architecture, food, accommodations, etc. are all wonderful. Take a walking tour for sure and hear the city's history come alive with how important Panama was to explorers and the world. Friendly people everywhere!

I was so lucky, I came off the ship determined to buy a authentic Panama hat and some of their coffee. So I caught a taxi to Old Town, my driver, the wonderful Barbaro offered to stay with me and show me around ( for a small fee of course) well did he ever. I didn't know at the time but it was Panamanian independence from Columbia Day. So the entire Old Town district was filled with parades and people celebrating. It could not have been a better experience. If you take the cruise and take a taxi please ask for Barbaro a 75 year old true gentleman. Barbaro is on the left

Quaint old town area. Several stores open to purchase souvenirs and restaurants to grab a bite to eat. There were also quite a few churches with beautiful interiors.
Christine S — Google review
Casco Viejo is, of course, a tourist trap due to the nature of it: museums, gorgeous architecture, the cobbled streets, and European charm. Be prepared to pay American prices at cafes, restaurants and museums. It’s also busy and you will be pulled into restaurants and tourist shops by relatively aggressive street level marketing. However, it is safe (perhaps besides the drain on your bank account) and possible to view sites and architecture free of cost, if you visit churches and simply walk the beautiful streets. We prefer immersive experiences where we are forced to soak the local language, but casco viejo is a must see. For a broader perspective on Panama that isn’t Eurocentric, on the outskirts, we viewed murals and signage relating to resisting gentrification, honoring the Guna population and an adjacent Afro-Caribbean community in complete disrepair. It’s fascinating and concerning to see a well preserved and policed historic district where a latte is $10 right next to el chinos and tenement style buildings with people hanging out on broken streets
Betsey B — Google review
Beautiful and walkable, safe area! And also a couple of museums and restaurants, each a very short walking distance from each other.

I called this Hat Street in Casco Viejo, Panama. My most favorite thing about this street is The Cigar House. You can sit have a drink and smoke some of the best cigars money can buy. I think the place is family own. I purchased a few Cuban cigars.

Hotel Casa Marichu is a luxurious boutique hotel located in the historic area of Casco Viejo, Panama City. The hotel offers 10 spacious luxury suites featuring double beds, fully equipped kitchens, and living rooms with flat-screen TVs. Guests can enjoy the sexy outdoor pool area on the rooftop, providing a stunning social space for relaxation. The central location makes it an ideal base for exploring the historic neighborhood.
We stayed almost 5 nights in the queen's room of this hotel and it is one of the best places we stayed in Panama city. It is very clean, the AC works great, there is hot shower (yes this might not exist in a lot of other places), the kitchen had enough utensils for cooking, and the pool albeit small is very refreshing. Although it is in a very good neighbordhood with many tasty restaurants around, it comes with the cost of lot of noise due to the liveliness of the neighborhood. So, if you are light sleeper it might be a bit hard for you to not wake up at 4AM to people singing.
Artin — Google review
Really enjoyed the hotel. Very easy contactless check in. The room was nice. The location was great. The desk clerk was very pleasant. I have no hesitation recommending this hotel.
David R — Google review
On booking.com it’s advertised as ‘AmazINN Places Deluxe Estudio’ but you’re actually staying at ‘Hotel Casa Marichu’ – it doesn’t matter but a little confusing. LOCATION 5* Couldn’t ask for better. It’s perfect. The old town is small so nothing is far but this place is down a relatively quiet street yet still feels safe and is in a great location. COMFORT AND AMENITIES 5* Everything is great – hot water, cold AC, great quality mattress & pillows, smart TV with Netflix. There’s a well-equipped kitchen with everything you need – utensils, microwave, fridge, kettle, toaster etc. There’s plenty of seating incl. 2 chairs on the balcony. The rooftop pool is very small. More a plunge pool than a swimming pool but it’s fine and there’s comfortable seating to relax up there. PEACEFULNESS 3* Even though the street is relatively quiet the noise proofing in this hotel isn’t very good. I was woke up often. The worst is when someone enters the main door downstairs – it slams shut and shake the walls and door to your room. It’s very loud! SERVICE 4* Check-in is all automatic (there’s no keycards, just keycodes) so you don’t see anyone. There’s a small reception desk downstairs but it’s never staffed. But they’re very contactable online via the booking.com messenger app. Cleaning was disappointing. I stayed 5 days but nobody once came in to change my towels or empty my bins – this is not nice since you have to put used toilet tissue in a bin without a lid and it of course starts to smell after 5 days! PRICE 4* I think the price is reasonable given the location and comfort and amenities of the room. OVERALL 5* I would highly recommend this hotel. Just bring ear plugs.
D — Google review
Easy check-in process where you get a code to the front door and your room, and that's it. Stayed in a room on the second floor, facing the street. Some noise from the street, but manageable. Large modern clean room. Staff is helpful if you ask them, but does not come off as happy and I got the feeling I annoyed them with the questions I had) some times, not always). Could store luggage before check in was available. Location is good. Casco Viejo is small så walkable everywhere.
Johan B — Google review
Lovely little hotel in the heart of the old town. Room was very nice and clean. Rooftop has a cute little pool and an area for relaxing. Had a water problem when we arrived there. We were initially reserved at another hotel but transferred here because of the water situation. A really nice change from the last hotel. The host assistant, Mariluz was very accommodating to our needs. A fantastic host. She made our stay as comfortable as possible. Will definitely come back.

This is a beautiful place, inside and out. The architecture is quite a contrast to the skyscrapers in the area. There is only one way in that we could see. Came in for breakfast, and the omelette was delicious, albeit a bit pricey. They have geisha coffee and provide three cups as a tasting experience, which was very good and competent! Ferry Las Perlas offers a reliable and enjoyable journey to the stunning islands of Contadora and Saboga. Passengers can expect a clean, comfortable ride with air-conditioned cabins and cushioned seating, making for a pleasant experience on the water. The catamaran design ensures stability even in open seas, allowing travelers to soak in breathtaking views of the city along the way. However, be prepared for some noise from the engines—earplugs might come in handy!
I took a trip to Saboga Island, the ferry is clean, fast and very stable. The trip was enjoyable on the boat, no sea sickness and the view of the city was great, it offered air conditioner and cushioned seats. It is a catamaran style ferry which offers great stability in the open sea. The only inconvinience were the engines, they needed noise insulation and were pretty loud at times.
Felix P — Google review
Trip to Saboga. 1st leg was fine. Good service and respecting the social distancing inside the boat due COVID, but the return leg was insane… People with no reservation get on board by paying directly to the crew. ALL seats were occupied and event travel stand-up. Windows are always closed without possibility to open that, A/C was turned-off and therefore no air circulation inside…
Luis P — Google review
No AC in the front. Super choppy. Really uncomfortable. And I never get seasick.
Andrea R — Google review
Don't deserve a star. Go to ferrypearlislands for a cheaper ferry if you want to go to Contadora. Very poor customer service I have to say. They don't clarify their terms and conditions and share you penalty fees that you don't even expect. They are unforgiving to the client but give nothing when they are at fault or behind schedule.
Luisa — Google review
Safe arrival is the objective and we got to Contadora Island safely and on time. Boat was very clean including the bathroom. Seats were comfortable and inside cabin is air conditioned. But: it is very loud on the boat-I wish I had earplugs. AND the boat does not pull up to a dock. You have to climb off the boat and into a tiny launch which drops you "near" the waters edge--so you have to step in the water to get to the island. OK...but I was not expecting it. And do not bring too much. Some people had large pieces of luggage and it had to be carried overhead.
Victor H — Google review
Loved the ride, very amicable crew! I would just suggest to have an additional ferry during weekends that way you have a bit more options during weekends when you want to visit the islands.

Not to mention that they sample you with all the flavors of the month if you like (be aware of the wait while you wait others tasting the ice-cream as well, but it is worth the wait). Karyna, the face behind the brand, travels the world to nourish her palate to offer a one-of-a-kind ice-cream experience. Also, their sustainable practices are executed to detail. They do not offer single-waste plastic at all. They have gluten-free cones, vegan and lactose intolerant options as well as agave-based ice-creams without processed sweeteners , colorants and additives

Amazing ice cream, a handful of vegan flavours, chocolate is the best, friendly service
Carsten A — Google review
Great place to get some very creative seasonal ice cream with local flavors. If you’re reading this and it’s November, try Fenix, it is a dreamy ice cream full of pistachios and honey mixed in a strawberry base ice cream. It is perfection. I love how they cater to everyone’s needs making sure there are options for everyone.

For me is this the best icecream ever. All the flavours are original and delicious. Love this place and proudly recommend.

Plaza Simón Bolívar, a historic square in Panama City's Casco Viejo, is a charming spot filled with cafes and restaurants. Renamed in 1883 to honor the independence hero Simon Bolivar, it offers a bohemian nightlife with live music and dancing at venues like La Casona and Relic Bar. The plaza is surrounded by historic buildings and outdoor restaurants, making it an ideal place for people-watching.
Beautiful town square with statue of Simon Bolivar, the unifier of Latin America: surrounded by colonial buildings including the Teatro Nacional.
Deborah R — Google review
I heard a lot about it but I think the media gave us a different perspective of the Bolivar. The worst thing about it is the neighbourhood behind it which was flooded with water during this time raining condition. There are several restaurants but very expensive too

Clean and safe to walk around at all times. A lot of places to eat around this area. Very tourist friendly.

UNESCO heritage site brings a mix of new and old. An above average amount of locally crafted souvenirs and great local food, beer and coffee. Not to be missed if you are in the area.

Great place, look out for chiggers and ticks though. Bring ear plugs if you stay in the tree house. Lovely, but the stream will keep you up.

Very small and nice plaza honoring Simon Bolivar. A perfect place to sit down, eat and stay a while enjoy the peaceful area of this part of Casco Antiguo. Nice hotel and decent restaurants around the square. Surely worth visiting.

Notable street
Amador Causeway, a man-made road built in 1913, connects two former islands to the mainland of Panama City. The causeway offers stunning bay views, palm-lined avenues, and well-maintained lawns for a leisurely stroll or bike ride.
A beautiful place at the Pacific side of Panamas Channel, perfect to observe the ships 🚢👍

Love spending an afternoon here. You drive ut and stop at pullovers for views of the city. You rent bikes and ither carious machines to enjoy the causeway. There are many restaurants to go to as well

Is a beautiful place . Panama use to be a potential country ,18 years a go but not anymore , so sad how their own governments kill their own country is like a dead country now and use to be like a little Miami full of tourists and investors , that’s just a past story so sad :(
Yaina F — Google review
We loved our late afternoon/early evening walk here. We took an Uber from the old town to the Amador Causeway. We went around an hour before sunset and then walked our way back into the main part of the city along the causeway. We got incredible views of the city and of the sunset. There are also benches along the way for you to sit, and there are sign posts, giving the history behind the creation and use of the causeway. It was very interesting.
Jennifer C — Google review
Great place for some family fun. Kite flying, bike riding, restaurants, pastry shops, touristy souvenir shops and the famous BioMuseo which is worth a visit. Take a drive or uber ride at night it’s so beautiful.
Lathyra R — Google review
We rented bikes and spent an hour cruising the Amador Causeway, which stretches about 5 miles out and back along the water. The path is wide, smooth, and completely flat, making it an easy and relaxing ride for all levels. It’s also very clean and well maintained, with plenty of space for both cyclists and walkers. The scenery is absolutely stunning — panoramic views of the Panama City skyline and ships in the harbor. It’s the perfect way to take in the coastline, with plenty of spots to stop for photos, enjoy the breeze, or grab a drink on one of the small islands along the way. The trail does end a bit abruptly before the final island, but it looks like expansion may be in progress. Overall, it’s a beautiful and memorable experience and a great way to enjoy the waterfront.
Cara H — Google review
Pretty cool place to go if you want to get out of the hotel/house without breaking the bank. This area opens at 3pm and has a lot of activities to do. There are a variety of places to grab a bite to eat, and you can ride bikes along the pathway. Kid friendly. There is also a navy port close by.

Ancient Ruins
Panamá Viejo, founded in 1519, is an archaeological site that includes a museum and a bell observation tower. The city's main thoroughfare, Avenida Central, connects Casco Viejo and El Cangrejo. It changes its name to Via España as it continues through downtown districts and residential neighborhoods.
Another stop on our Panama Cruise aboard the Emerald Princess was a multi stop at Colon, where we got off the ship and took an all day tour to the Old Panama City bus tour which included a tour through modern Panama and dropped us off back at the port of Colon to get back on the boat. The tour was long, there was a good amount of driving but it was so worth it. The city was founded back in the 1500s and it's amazing to look at the coastline of the modern city across the way.
B B — Google review
Historical site, definitely enjoyable, you can have a nice view of the city from the top of the tower. It’s a bit of walk inside but they provide transportation from the entrance to the center. Although, for the price they charge, there isn’t much more than just ruins of stone buildings. The museum is decent but not extraordinary.
Cedric S — Google review
Great old town, with lots of interesting shops and great restaurants. Some building are in the process of remodel, but most of the town is well repaired. Easy signs and maps.

Had a awesome day in Panama City, Panama the last two days. Yesterday was a quiet day in the city as it was the Day for the Dead, a very somber day, unlike Mexico's celebration. Today and tomorrow is celebration for Independence and they had 35 marching bands on a 5 kilometer parade route. The people here are so nice and so proud of their country, you can feel it is the air. Definitely a place that would be nice to spend a week here sometime. 🙂🙂🙂

Nice trip to make, especially with kids as you will have a 99% chance to see monkeys. Don't go with the tour agencies, but do it yourself! It will save you a lot of money and it is easy to arrange. Go to the muelle publico at Gamboa, just on the rightside before crossing the bridge. Go early (7 am) and boats and captains will be waiting there. We paid a total of $70 for the 4 of us and had a private trip. Also nice rainforest views on the Panama canal.

You could make a pretty good argument that this is THE most fun thing to do on a visit to Panama City. I opted for a private boat and guide and had an absolute blast. Definitely do a early morning tour, and bring ALOT of bananas!!!! The monkeys are full and not as active in the afternoon.

Parque Nacional Soberanía is a 220-square-kilometer tropical forest national park located along the eastern flank of the canal in Panama. It offers well-marked trails that pass through rugged terrain covered in pristine rainforest, providing opportunities to spot monkeys, sloths, and numerous bird species. The park is easily accessible from Panama City and is popular among both locals and visitors for hiking. While exploring the trails, hikers can enjoy the diverse wildlife and lush vegetation.

I went there with a tour, to see3 species of monkeys and also visit a village of an indigenous community. The Cappucin monkeys in the national park area did not have fear of human and would jump on our boat to get peanuts and fruits. The highlight of the visit was meeting the indigenous community village and learn about their livelihood.

We took an uber from the city to do a little hiking. It was tough to get info, since I think most users use tours. We hiked about 4 km out and back. It took about 3 hours since we kept stopping to look at things and take pictures. What we found out when we go there: There is no cost. At about 8 km, the trail comes to a T. You need to have a guide to go past this. There is a tower to see the levels of the rainforest, but you need a reservation to access it. On the way back when we had about 0.5 km left, we got cell service back and we could contact uber again. In early April, there were no mosquitoes. The trail is mostly shaded. We didn't see a lot of animals, but we did see an anteater climbing a tree.

The Church of Merced, located in Casco Viejo, is a historical and religious structure with a baroque facade dating back to 1680. This church is among the oldest buildings in Panama City and features intricate stonework that was relocated from its original site in Panama Viejo. It showcases the rich history of the city and attracts tourists who are interested in exploring its diverse range of cathedrals, museums, shops, and dining options.
Its amazing that they were able to transport each stone of this baroque Mercedarian cathedral from the original location in the Old Quarter or first city of Panama in the pre-1600's, to its current location in Casco Viejo. Not only that, but it still contains the original roof rafter structure along with the original wooden columns as well!

Iglesia de la Merced Panama City, Panama This church was transported brick by brick from the ruins of a 16th-century city into Panama City's current historic district. THIS STUCCO AND STONE EXTERIOR feels visually out of place with its colonial surroundings in Panama City’s historic Casco Viejo neighborhood. The reason for this is that the church is actually from the much older city of Panama Viejo, and was transported from its ruins. Located 12 kilometers away from Panama’s historic city center, Panama Viejo is the oldest city established by European settlers in North America, dating back to 1519. Panama Viejo was destroyed in 1671 during an attack led by the Welsh privateer Henry Morgan. The population elected to move to the peninsula—the site of the present-day Casco Viejo—to be better fortified from attack.
Karin S — Google review
A baroque facade in a colonial surrounding. The church initially was built in the early 1600's in Panamà Viejo. After Morgan's attack it was moved to Casco Viejo. Personally, I like the interior very much, the relatively small nave and the aisles with several side altars evoke an intimate friendly atmosphere. As we were lucky enough to meet the Ohio-born harpist, we could witness a classical concerto with harmonious acoustics.
D H — Google review
One should go here to see the older history of Panama City. There are cathedrals, museums, and shops catering to locals and tourists. Also. You can find nice places for meals or just a coffee.

The pool club at the ocean sun casino is absolutely breathtaking! If you want one of the best views of Panama City I would highly suggest stopping by. The pool club is open daily from 5 p.m. to 2 a.m. and has an infinity pool with the best views of the city and I would certainly recommend the sunsets. The cocktails are handmade, delicious and the service cannot be beat. Certainly come here to be impressed and to impress others! The ambiance and lack of other people made this an unforgettable experience.
