A must-see! We were truly impressed by Burghley House – a stunning Elizabethan mansion with breathtaking architecture and beautifully preserved interiors. The gardens are just as spectacular, especially the Sculpture Garden and the fun, interactive Garden of Surprises. A perfect mix of history, art, and nature. Highly recommended!
Burghley House is really impressive and worth seeing. The building itself is huge and full of history, with amazing details inside and out. Walking through the rooms feels like stepping back in time, and there’s so much to look at you could easily spend hours there. The staff were friendly and happy to answer questions, which made the visit even better. Outside views of the house are just as stunning, especially if the weather is good. It’s the kind of place that makes you go “wow” when you first see it.
It's a huge pile of a place with plenty to see, enormous gardens designed by Capability Brown and a wealth of treasures on view. They are a bit economical with the truth regarding where the money actually came from: if truth be told, political fingers were very much in the till several centuries ago. Clearly nothing has changed! To be frank, I found it rather soulless and dark, especially on an autumn day that started somewhat gloomily. You may love it; I have seen country homes that I warmed to a lot more than this.
What a venue! So much history, so much style. We had our work conference here and it was amazing, the staff were attentive and friendly, nothing was too much trouble. The food was great, pastries and tea or coffee to start, mini fish and chips or vegetarian option, then charcuteri to finish. I look forward to revisiting to see the house. Thanks to Cara and her team.
The House is closed for private functions every Friday & typically, I went on a Friday! 🤦 The walking trails, cafe & shop are still open though & I managed to get a few photos of the outside of the house. It is absolutely stunning & although I may have been able to get some more shots on the other side of the house, it was absolutely sweltering so I contented myself with these & will capture the rest when I can actually visit the property fully at some point. Definitely recommended, just not on a Friday!
The most beautiful palace we have ever visited. It is clear that the owners put great effort into ensuring visitors have access to a wealth of information and a truly enriching experience. The part open for sightseeing is absolutely magnificent – stunning ceiling paintings, the enchanting Heavenly Room, the impressive kitchen, and the elegant library hall. From the windows, you can admire the garden, not accessible to visitors, yet captivating with its carefully and imaginatively trimmed shrubs. The park area is vast, with sections available for free walks as well as paid entry. One of the highlights was spotting a herd of deer behind the fence, including two rare white ones. Truly breathtaking!
A beautiful house well preserved and the art and paintings are incredible. However it cost £22 to go in to the house and you only see a small part of the house. Couldn't go up to the very top and missed alot of levels. The garden is nice to explore with all the waterfalls
Amazing country house and well worth a day out. We drove just under two hours each way to get there and the schlep was totally justified. We spent about and hour and a half each in the gardens and house. The entrance price was £22 each on the door. There are a few options for food, including the Orangery restaurant and Garden Café. Food and drink is reasonably priced, good quality and offers plenty of choice. Souvenirs also cheaper than I have come to expect in such places. Parking is ample and located not too far from the house and gardens. The house is stunning. You don't see too much of it as the family is still living there, but what you do so - the State Rooms - are steeped in history and full of incredible treasures including the largest collection of Chinese and Japanese porcelain outside Asia, stunning examples of marquetry and some incredible murals and celling scenes by Antonio Verrio. The Hell Staircase was a highlight for us. There are lots of friendly volunteers and a fantastic audio guide (priced at £3) to help you along. The gardens are expanisive. We wandered the Floral Tapestry, Garden of Surprises and Sculpture Gardens before running off to see the nearby town of Stamford. The gardens were in full bloom in late August and despite this being a summer Saturday, were not brimming with kids. The Garden of Surprises was quirky but not gimmicky, and the other parkland areas were beautiful. All in all, including a lunch stop, we spent a good 4 hours exploring Burghley House and felt this was an exceptional day out. Plenty of things for kids to do too. You should allow time to visit Stamford too; this is a lovely town. All in all, this is a lovely part of the UK!

Spent a lovely afternoon at their Gardens of Surprise (Historic Houses Members get in free) with my Assistance Dog (Welcome everywhere in the Gardens and house) looking at all the sculptures, and relaxing. My dog managed to ‘smell’ his way into and out of the mirror maze. I would have been lost! The house has a lot of charm, and well worth having a look in. The park was a fair size, and the Lion Bridge looked spectacular. They will refill your water bottles in the courtyard cafe where the toilets are. Access for the disabled is well thought out. Paths are tarmac for Disability scooters, ramps to the toilets, and parking for Disabled right next to the house wall, next to all the main entrances. Parking is free. Well worth a visit.
Burghley gardens are really beautiful and worth a visit. The space feels peaceful and well looked after, with lots of flowers, trees and little paths to explore. I enjoyed walking around and taking my time because every corner had something different to see. The gardens are big enough to wander without feeling crowded, but still easy to get around. It’s a nice place for a quiet walk, photos, or just sitting and enjoying the surroundings. Definitely a spot I’d recommend if you’re nearby.
We had a lovely late lunch at the Burghley Cafe. We ran out of time to see the house and gardens (which I deeply regret) because it looks pretty spectacular. You can walk around the small garden off of the cafe and the close grounds but all else must have a paid entry ticket. I hope to return and see the whole estate.
We went in early November before the house closed for the winter. We were very impressed with the amount of space for children to run around in. The surprise garden was good although the first set of mirrors were ordinary mirrors when we thought they might be fun distorting ones. The mirror maze was great...easy to lose your children! All the trees were very pretty in their autumn colours and the lake is nice with some benches if you want to sit and take in the scenery. The gift shops and cafe are good if a bit pricey. The house was lovely. We enjoyed having the freedom to walk around ourselves instead of joining a tour. Amazing frescoes and history. Included in the entrance fees were leaflets for both the house and gardens. Maybe the gardens could do with a few small signs to give you an idea of where you are going but overall a very enjoyable day at a reasonable price.
A beautiful Elizabeth stately home with amazing gardens and a deer park. The inside is absolutely stunning. The courtyard sculpture Gardens and fountain area are worth a frequent visit where you can sit in the stunning grounds and have a picnic near the lake. I'm happy to say this is on my doorstep. How lucky am I
Came here as a Historic Houses member. We'd never been here before so we thought we'd investigate the Gardens plus there was a food event on with lots of stalls. Loads of lovely grub not only to eat there and then but also to take away, such as jams, brownies, pies etc. The Gardens themselves were lovely and the sculptures interesting and curious. Lots of things to do for little ones too such as an Adventure Park.
Incredible residence, amazing grounds. The house (featured in "The Crown" TV Show, "The Baman" movie, etc!) is wonderfully preserved, and coupled with eloquent, well-informed guides at every turn for you to get extra knowledge, the whole experience is a treat. Well worth the admission fee. They provide a mean Afternoon Tea in the "Orangery" restaurant, too!
Amazing estate for every age. The staff are well versed with the history and the house is very beautiful. Its a must go! Don't forget to visit orangery after your visit and try some good food.

Fantastic part of Stamford’s history! Cinema tickets affordable and the cinema itself is very cute and shows a brilliant choice of films. The cafe is alright but used to be better, and one of the best parts of the whole place when it was not a private business/owned separately. The homey vibe of the Arts Centre and the community atmosphere makes it one of the best places in Stamford to be. The staff are BRILLIANT! So kind and helpful, in the cafe, kiosk and box office.
I was involved in the recent WVAS Spring Exhibition. I’ve been numerous time now attending art events and the staff (centre, bar, cafe) have all been very friendly and helpful. It’s a fantastic venue with great facilities and I’ll be exhibiting on my own and with other groups again in the future.
We had the most incredible experience at the Stamford Arts Centre for our wedding! From the moment we reached out and booked, the staff were absolutely amazing. The whole team were super helpful, friendly, and supportive throughout the entire process. They were always on hand to answer our questions and offered great support not only in the run-up to the big day but even afterwards when we came to collect our items. The venue itself is so unique, we especially loved the ballroom and the art gallery space (where the bar was), which gave the whole day such a special and memorable atmosphere. We would 1000% recommend anyone looking for a creative and welcoming wedding venue to consider this place. Thank you to the entire team for helping make our day so perfect! We literally had the BEST day ever.
I went with my granddaughter who is 16. After eating in the cafe which was yummy we wandered into the art room and spent some time there looking at the art and other items. Also putting some puzzle pieces together before heading out to Stamford market. Lovely place.
Managed to push my mum's wheelchair from the Wharf Road car park to here without too much difficulty. Made for a nice trip out and had cold drinks and big slice of cake each.
Visited on a midweek morning. Partner managed to blag a guided tour of the Georgian Theatre, even though closed for show preparations, by a very personable and enthusiastic young local historian. To cap it all he threw in a guided tour of the Georgian Assembly room too. The gallery and cafe are not shabby either. Stamford, as out of towners, we're jealous.
Booked tickets in advance and had a nice toasted teacake and hot drinks. Very nice, efficient and friendly staff
Wonderful relaxed performance of Frozen jnr the musical in the lovely theatre. This is a well used excellent arts centre. Great staff and surroundings.

Took the kids to their first family splash session here and had an amazing time. The wave machine was working and put on several times during the session, which the kids all really enjoyed. The slide was also running for most of the session, I think my son spent more time on this then actually swimming. Water temperature was just right, one of few pools where we lasted the full 90mins in the water without wanting to find an excuse to get out. All of the staff were friendly and felt very safe place to take the kids swimming. We also found the changing rooms just as good as some of the private gyms visited in the past. Warm showers and overall clean all round. The kids can't wait to return, definitely worth the visit.
We went to the float session this half term, lots of choice of floats. Was really fun and managed well. Pool was a bit colder than their sister one at Bourne so might not be ok for babies but was fine for my 5 year old
The entrance looked clean and tidy, Safe were helpful Changing rooms were really dirty! They need a good scrub, sick on the floor, the toilets smelt like sewage and we're disgusting, showers dirty. The floors were stained. The changing room generally made me feel sick never seen such a horrible place. Swimming pool was really cold children's including my own and my friends kids had blue lips we were only there and hour. Wave machine was great. Place needs a refurb desperately! Will not be going back until they do
Firstly we didn't know that you had to pre book, it's been a long time since have been. But its not at all clear on the website and that you need to book. And that you only get 90 minutes. We used to take our children to this pool and 20 + years ago it was lovely and clean. Taking our Grandchildren it was not the same experience. Pool changing rooms were dirty, the baby changing station attached to wall, dirty, the cubile itself smelt of urine. I finally got myself and my grandaughter ready and we went and had fun in the pool. The pool is fine and lots of fun was had. When we decided to call it quits, we changed the grandkids next to the pool as my husband and son told me that the mens was just as bad. The adults spent as little time as we could to get ourselves dry and out. Waiting in the reception area, which was unmanned as it was lunch break and the reception lady was having lunch in the small office, I eventually went to tell her that there were people waiting! We did sit in the spectators area and 2 of the chairs were rusting away at the feet and wobbly. An incident waiting to happen, Stamford Pool make sure your insurance is good! Do better, be better! Overall a really, really disappointed afternoon. We've heard the Bourne pool is better so will give that a try next.
The pool was quite busy for afternoon time, booking system for swimming slots doesn’t fit the purpose for those who have membership… toilet or changing room not clean enough.
Changing rooms dirty. Toilets smelt strongly of urine. Pool looks tired. Very disappointed
Nice place clean and inviting, not very big, does have a wave machine, good little leisure pool with an attached gym is a bonus
Changing rooms are not looked after, the floor is absolutely disgusting hair, mud, wee in the corners of the changing cubicle's and general dirt all over the floor. Staff should be monitoring the changing rooms! A quick hose down and a sweep every hour wouldn't hurt anyone. both male and female changing rooms was disgusting. Pool is very cold.

Smartly refurbished venue run by volunteers, with live music, drama and comedy, plus pre-show meals.
Slide 1 of 8
The Stamford Corn Exchange, with its charming blend of historic architecture and welcoming ambiance, offers a delightful venue for live performances. Nestled in the heart of Stamford, this theatre exudes intimacy, making every show feel personal and engaging. Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs was an absolute treat, showcasing the perfect balance of humor, drama, and enchanting storytelling. The intimate stage setting amplified the experience, drawing the audience into the fairytale world with ease. The clever use of lighting and vibrant costumes further enhanced the production, creating a visually stunning spectacle. The actors delivered captivating performances, from Snow White’s endearing charm to the comedic antics of the dwarfs. The Evil Queen, with her commanding presence, was a standout, adding a delicious touch of villainy. Before the show, the independent café located just below the theatre is a must-visit. This cozy spot offers a selection of delicious drinks and snacks, perfect for setting the tone for an evening of entertainment. The friendly staff and warm atmosphere add to the overall charm, making it an ideal pre-show retreat. The Stamford Corn Exchange remains a gem in the town’s cultural landscape, and productions like Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs highlight the venue's ability to deliver top-notch entertainment. Whether you're a seasoned theatre-goer or looking for a family-friendly outing, this theatre promises an experience filled with laughter, wonder, and fond memories.
Yesterday we had our wedding reception at this beautiful venue. Wayne went out of his way to help organise and keep us calm. When it came to setting up Nathan was incredibly helpful the day before letting us in and helping guide us On the day of, the bar staff were incredible! Positive and helpful, chatty and engaging. Even the next day going to collect all of our stuff, everyone from the front of house, bar and cleaning staff were professional, friendly and beyond valuable
Easy parking my only gripe is accessibility I got there a little early but had to stand until they opened the doors. Then when in the theatre the slope was pretty steep but most of all the seats were fixed to the slope so I felt like I was being tipped forward for the whole show. But everything else was good and the show was good.
Fabulous theatre, well maintained thanks to caring volunteers. Good security so no scumbags to spoil your experience. Bar expensive but the profits go toward the upkeep which I don't mind. Beware shows will start as advertised and finish by 10pm, not for everyone, but this works for me and prompts me to book up shows more often. Free car parks nearby after 6pm.
Best Theatre in Town! Great for live entertainment local and national acts. Great bars and prices. Friendly volunteers everywhere....see you soon!! AC
Nice place but theatre hall is very steep and not great for walking or standing . On that point it scores 1 star but the choice of shows and the staff get 5 stars .Good they have a lift as lots of steps. Having disability I struggle with venue sadly
The only let down is the small bar and toilets otherwise I absolutely love this theatre. It always has a great atmosphere and some really good shows where they don't mind people taking photos and videos. Been here many times as you always get a good view. The volunteers are fantastic.
Went to see Oasish at this lovely venue yesterday. Lady called Jane who was working behind the ticket office was really helpful when I first arrived. Not everyone in my party was present but she booked us all in and took details of those arriving later. Later we had a few problems with a group of people behind us who were extremely loud and drinking (shouting/screaming out, banging the back of seats, knocking those of us in front of them). Couldn’t enjoy let alone hear the band. Went to the ticket office to see if there was a chance to move places in the auditorium. Jane was very understanding of the situation and immediately did her best to resolve this for us. She found us other seats where we could happily enjoy the rest of the concert. Thanks so much Jane. Your help and kindness were much appreciated.

Stamford Library is a great place to visit for all your reading needs. Located on the High Street in Stamford, Lincolnshire, it offers a variety of library services and facilities. The building itself is one of the most striking in this historic town. The library has something for everyone. Whether you’re looking for books, CD's, videos or magazines, there’s something to suit all tastes. There are also ongoing activities and programs such as a Garden Discussion Group, Adult Literature Group and Preschool Story Time. My daughter fully enjoys the kids section and some times on a Saturday morning they have Lego time - which I enjoy too 😂. The Ferguson Library is also part of the Stamford Library experience. It helps individuals and organizations achieve success in an effort to build a strong, vibrant and inclusive community. It provides access to books, magazines and other materials as well as events like book sales. Overall, I would highly recommend visiting the Stamford Library if you’re ever in the area!
I needed to print out an ebay return label and went to the Stamford Llibrary when the eBay return format proved unacceptable to the Stamford Post Office. The Library staff were extremely helpful and and friendly and gave me every assistance on the computers and were able to print the label for me. They also kindly helped with some cellotape to tape it to the package. Brilliant service ! 5☆!
When I lived in Stamford I paid the library a weekly visit. It's a beautiful building, very enticing, and the selection of books is generally very good - it's broad enough to offer something to everyone. The staff were friendly and full of useful recommendations, and the local history section is great for anyone looking to do some research.
An unusual looking building – as described on the listings register: One storey in ashlar. Portico with 4 Tuscan columns, originally open between the columns. Very wide modillion eaves cornice in wood. Moulded pediment surmounts the whole frontage.
Helpful staff, and an excellent selection of films on dvd and Blu-ray at very reasonable prices, with an especially decent choice of kids' movies. Lots of films (old and new) not available on some streaming sites.
Very friendly staff, always willing to help and point you in the right direction of your looking for a particular topic of book
Day out in Stamford visited the library for advise of what to see the lady on the desk was very informative and happy to help Highly recommend a visit
Great books to borrow and DVD's to rent, friendly staff and it's easy to renew and reserve online

A large church found in the centre of Stamford. Some very old graves around the edge.. The graveyard area itself is quite small, but then it is right on a main road.. Very pretty inside with some glorious stained windows!
Large, moderately interesting church in the heart of Stamford. the architecture on the outside of this 15th century church is more interesting than the interior, but it's well worth a visit when you're in town. It's open to the public, so why not interrupt your pub crawl for a quick visit?
All Saints is situated in the heart of Stamford. All Saints' Coffee Bar is open every Friday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Their warm area and soup kitchen is a great addition to the Unity Centre, which is open every Monday at 11:00 a.m. and free to use. An interesting architecture and the exterior is well preserved. Pop in next time when you visit Stamford.
A spectacularly beautiful church - one of many lovely old buildings in this pretty little market town.
Stamford is a lovely town to visit in Lincolnshire, wide streets with 16th and 17th century buildings. Lots of nice cafés and interesting shops, many Churches and many Pubs. It's name was adopted by Stamford, Connecticut, United States, founded in 1641. We visited nearby Rutland waters and had a 40 minute boat trip around the very large man made reservoir /lake, very reasonable cost, well worth a visit.
We attended the St Gilbert's school Christingle service. It was a lovely time, with the candlelight making the interior glow in a medieval way! Note that on street or public car parks are your only options. Outside Christmas that is not a problem.
Excellent cake and coffee today and I think every Friday. Do try

We had a wonderful time watching The Lady In the Van after having v enjoyed a picnic in the beautiful grounds. The staff were attentive, and proved great customer service. The play was executed brilliantly. I can't believe I have waited so long to get along to a show!
Tolethorpe Hall, and The Taming of the Shrew, brilliant combination. Fantastic outdoor venue, the audience are under cover. The cast and crew were excellent, this was the best production/ performance I have seen. Seating is spacious and lots of legroom. Brilliant night.
Had a wonderful evening out watching As You Like It. I haven't been here for almost 30 years, and it's just as I remember it. It's a wonderful atmosphere sitting outside watching Shakespeare. The seats are remarkably comfortable. I would definitely recommend taking a blanket to keep warm later in the evening. But this is a perfect place to come for a picnic and a performance!
Went to see 'Macbeth', last night. Was pleasantly surprised.Great portrayal. Loved the costumes. Loved the witches. Loved the set. A huge well done to cast and crew. And blessed with great weather, too. Oh and the coach full of students, behaved very well.......even though some were not used to flying insects🤣🤣🤣
All the productions I've seen have been fantastic. Definitely go and see this talented bunch at Tolethorpe!
What an excellent performance of the Mirror Cracked in tremendous heat. Outstanding production and such professionalism by the cast. Well done to everyone involved. Lovely venue, grounds, friendly helpful staff. A joyful experience. Thank you.
The youths performed Emms Rice's Wuthering Heights tonight and they totally smashed it. Brilliant casting, performances, sets. This is the third consecutive year of the young actors and they totally deserve the sell-outs they're now getting. My advice: buy your tickets for next year's performances before Christmas.
Great atmosphere, Macbeth production was ok but actors couldn't always be heard. Glad to see they have finally allowed a cast curtain call! Overpriced bar drinks! Barman's suggestion to use soda in a Pimms when they had run out of lemonade was a disaster.

Beautiful old church up a very attractive street full of lovely architecture. Has beautifully carved box pews. Well worth visiting.
Very old church, with memorials to William Cecil, advisor to Elizabeth 1, and the Burleigh/ Cecil family Benjamin Disraeli is also remembered. For me, David Brownlow, 6th Lord Burleigh is significant, only in as much that when I was very young, he laid the foundation stone at the new Hastings Grammar school, this would have been around 1963. It should also be mentioned, although this does not appear on his memorial that he was an Olympic Gold Medal winner.
One of my ancestors married here in 1806. Lots of memorials to the Cecils, but in the small burial ground all the names had worn off the stones. Attractive windows and an appealing carved pulpit.
Called in here, probably like many other visitors, to see the tomb of William Cecil Lord Burghley. Also, the memorial to his parents. This town church is on a cramped site but we'll worth a visit.
Lovely church. Fascinating to see the tomb of Elizabeth I's minister William Cecil in the Cecil family chapel. Beautiful stained glass too.
That’s why we pray Pray .. Pray.. Praaaaay We need to pray Just to make it through the day
Beautiful in it's simplicity. Was keen to see all the memorials to the Cecil family. Very ornate. Interesting varied history. Well worth a short visit.
We had a wonderful time such a wonderful choice of Hymns to uplift us everyone from the crew attached to the Songs of Praise so appreciative of our efforts also the conductor, so jolly I'm sure she drew the best out of us all Thank you All.

A large welcoming congregation suitable for absolutely all ages. Three services every Sunday. Great facilities and ministries beyond Sundays. Outgoing and evangelical with modern worship.
Brilliant vibrant worshipping Christian community. Good use of a building that has some interesting stained glass and features.
It is always a pleasure to attend any service at St. George's. On the Sunday before Christmas, the Nativity Play proved to be amusing and acted out by enthusiastic younger members of the congregation with ancillary assistance from a few adults. The outstanding element of one's time here is the joy shining out of every attendee together with the welcome extended to all visitors. Well done Martin and all your team. May I wish you all well for the coming year. Norman Dean
We came for our grandson's baptism. Fantastic family service. Clear message. Very warm and friendly.
What a beautiful place. This church is so special not to mention how full of the spirit it felt! I can't wait to visit again

Burghley is a great park to visit. The cricket evenings are always a good evening out, followed by a 10 minute walk to the town centre to keep the evening going.
Great cricket venue situated in the Burleigh estate. Nice pitch. Well kept ground.
Good old-fashioned cricket club in beautiful setting. Even saw a game briefly!
The cricket ground is set in lovely grounds and plenty of walking space.

Very large collection of antique and vintage sellers under one roof. Items were well organized , clean and tidy. The day we visited was not too busy and it was easy to look around. Great collection of vintage cutlery.
A wide range of dealers sell items here. There is a wide range of historic items for sale.
This is a lovely antique centre. All set on one level which is good if you can’t manage stairs. Everything from jewellery to antique farm tools and everything in between. We will be back soon.
Great selection provided by individual sellers in a one stop environment. Sellers have a pitch and the counter staff take payments for all the sellers there. This means there is a fabulous and regularly updated selection. Great central location with free parking outside if you can get a spot. Short walk to main shopping area in a picturesque town with amazing architecture, high end shops and restaurants.
Decent sized centre with some good stock however one lady positively refuses to telephone the dealers to ask for a better price and is quite 'off' when this is requested. A shame really as this probably puts people off buying. There are other centres locally that are much more appealing
Nice sized centre well worth a visit many different sellers so prices vary but on average fairly priced items.
Much improved selection of collectable and antiques from when I last visited 9 months previously
It's a fantastic antique shop. We loved looking around. There's so much to see.

The Eleanor Cross is a modern creation of the original lost cross built by Edward l after the death of his wife queen Eleanor of castille in 1290. It is not in the exact position of the original. It is one of 12 crosses across the country that were built on the spot her body rested on its journey back to London. There are three original crosses still remaining across the country, a lot where destroyed by the Puritans in the 1600s.
Pretty cool looking monument. The Eleanor crosses were twelve stone monuments erected in a line down from Lincoln to Charing Cross that King Edward I built between 1291 and 1295 in memory of his wife Eleanor of Castile and where her body lay each night on the journey to London. This one in Stamford was built in 2008 as the original one was destroyed in the English civil war.
An incredible monument that serves as a remarkable tribute to a small yet significant portion of Stamford’s rich and storied history. This architectural marvel has not only enhanced the town’s historical narrative but has also transformed its landscape, making it appear far more appealing and inviting to both residents and visitors alike.
Very interesting spikey structure looking really cool, looks old
I won't bore everyone with history because everyone knows about the Eleanor Cross for sure. Beautiful structure in MY eyes, and WE found out that there were 12 lavishly decorated monuments.Eleanor Cross is One of them. King Edward I had them built between 1291 and 1295 for his beloved wife Eleanor Of Castille who had died in 1290 as they travelled across the land. How poignant that WE saw this beautiful , simple monument. King Edward I had 12 such (not all the same ) monuments erected as a memory of his wife Eleanor who died as they traveled through the Midlands. Each Eleanor Cross is dedicated in her memory. Here is another photo WE saw...
In 1290 the wife of King Edward l's Eleanor of Castile died in Harby, Nottinghamshire whilst on a tour of their kingdom, Edward was so grief stricken, he could not leave Harby for three days, then lead a funeral procession back to london, along the way he commissioned 12 carved stone monuments to be built at each resting place to Commemorate Eleanor, only three Crosses survived and unfortunately Stamford's monument hasn't survived, instead, a tall spire in it's place, erected in 2009
A cool town centre piece
Lost six car spaces when it was put up despite local opposition in 2009
