It’s taken me a while to write this review. The staff were very friendly, but I wouldn’t go back to oh la la or recommend it.
Unfortunately, there was a lack of organisation from start to finish. We booked via WhatsApp for the 2 nights fun dive package, where you can do 4 dives and get your 2 nights stay for free. We arrived off the 7am ferry so the free breakfast of fried eggs and bread was a nice surprise when we arrived, but there wasn’t any guidance about how to sign up for dives. As we’d booked the 2 nights 4 dives package, via WhatsApp we assumed we would already be signed up for diving. This wasn’t the case. After breakfast we discussed with a staff member that we wanted to do 2 dives the next day. Unfortunately, when we went back that afternoon to double check what time we needed to wake up the next day, we were told that the afternoon dive was full so we could only do 1 dive in the morning. This was obviously disappointing. The following day, we asked how to sign up for the dives the day after, and were told to write our name on the whiteboard when we woke up in the morning. As we came back from eating dinner that night we found the board already quite full and just managed to get a space for the morning dive the next day. There was just a total lack of explanation or organisation. The same can be said regarding some parts of the diving experience too. When we came back from the dive we had to clean our equipment and put it away, which I’m happy to do. However, I had no idea where to put any of my equipment after the dive as nobody showed us. Also, Oh La La clean some of the equipment differently to how we’ve been shown in other diving schools - of course everywhere does things slightly differently. Nobody explained how they wanted their equipment cleaned however, which resulted in me getting called out for it by one of the divemasters - I felt a bit like I was getting told off like a child! On the equipment, the BCDs didn’t look in great condition and my friend couldn’t find any fins that fit her.
The accommodation is extremely basic, it seems like one of the cheapest options on the island so can’t complain too much, but be prepared for mouldy rooms and dirty toilets with a manual flush.
On the walk to the toilets you pass a sad looking monkey in a cage, alone with torn up drinks cans and plastic bottles. I did see it bought out one evening on a lead. As an animal lover, I don’t really like seeing animals in cages or captivity so just something to be aware of. I’ve also realised it’s important to me to go to a diving centre that has a focus on protecting the ocean, and I did not get that vibe from Oh La La.
Even when we tried to leave to catch the ferry in the morning, the card reader had no charge so it was a bit chaotic trying to pay for our stay. They also tried to overcharge us, I’m sure it was an accident but make sure to calculate it yourself. Just another example of the lack of organisation.
We ended up staying 3 nights and doing 2 dives, paid 240 each for it. The diving around the island is beautiful and would recommend it. If you want cheap, relaxed (I.e. unorganised) vibes then go for Oh La La. Otherwise I’d recommend paying more for somewhere else.
