I’m really glad I included Ine Funaya in my Kyoto itinerary—it’s such a hidden gem. This place is nothing like the usual bustling Japan you often see online or in city tours. It’s peaceful, off the beaten path, and that’s exactly what makes it so charming. I joined a tour that brought us here, and it turned out to be one of the highlights of my trip. The traditional boat houses lining the coast are beautiful and unique, and the atmosphere is calm and serene. You get a glimpse of a slower, quieter life in Japan. The boat tour was the best part for me. We got to feed seagulls and even eagles while cruising around. It was a fun and unforgettable experience. My tip: If you can, spend more than just an hour here. Take your time. One hour isn’t enough to take it all in. Ideally, stay a night if you want to truly soak up the peaceful vibe and maybe see a beautiful sunset or early morning view.
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ A Hidden Gem by the Sea – Tranquility in Every Corner Visiting Ine Funaya was like stepping into a peaceful postcard. The calm waters, traditional wooden boathouses, and surrounding green hills created a serene and cinematic atmosphere. Walking along the waterfront, I felt completely at ease, enjoying the fresh sea breeze and slow pace of life. Locals were kind and welcoming, and it felt like time slowed down in this charming village. Perfect for those looking to escape the city and immerse themselves in authentic Japanese coastal culture. Highly recommend taking a boat tour to view the houses from the sea — it’s a unique perspective you won’t get anywhere else in Japan. A must-visit if you’re traveling through Kyoto!
This fishing town is worth a visit. Take a glimpse of the daily life of its townspeople. You can rent a bike and go around town but be mindful of their private spaces. Ride the boat and feed the seagulls. Or just sit and take in the scenery.
Definitely a must , it feels like a gem in Japan. Very different sceneries and views. Sea food here is fantastic and the town is quiet and relaxing. The only downside is that like any small town it has limited buses/transportations and everything has a tight schedule. Just be alert about that to get here early and if you are not staying , leave before the last bus.
A unique and picturesque side of Japan. The traditional boat houses lining the quiet bay are full of charm, each with their own character and history. It feels like stepping into a slower, more peaceful way of life. With good planning, a day trip here should be enough to explore and appreciate the calm beauty of the area. There is also a boat house that has been turned into a small museum, where you can enter for a modest fee to see what the inside of a funaya looks like. I regret not going in.
Nice little fish village, we felt like we were in an anime show with the views and beauty of it. Our tour guy took us a whole lap around the mountain to see other points of interests from the map. Don't go too late into the evening, it could be eerie and unsafe.
Enjoy the scenic view from the touring boat (I suggest taking the big one with seagull feeding at the Ine Wan Meguri, 伊根湾巡り overlooking the whole Ine Fishing Village. Would recommend to stay overnight to fully embrace the whole village’s strolling experience.
This is an ancient fishing village where boats and house together, beautiful and heritage place. Good for walking and cycling.

Beautiful view of the bay lined with boathouses.. The restaurant upstairs has the best view of it from the balcony. The fish snack cafe downstairs served very good coffee. What a nice surprise..
A beautiful bay area surrounded by boathouses and clear sea views. Took a local bus here, overall quiet and lovely places. Do note shops and inns are few and some require pre-reservations to be made so some pre-research is needed. Would recommend this place to those who enjoy a unique boat house or by the sea view, and require some peace away from the hustle and bustle of life. Do note there are tourists but mostly local and still quite manageable.
February 9. Amazing view of the bay. I came only to realize more the location of Ine and Funaya. You like calm and peaceful real local Funaya Boat house …. So don’t go to the tourist epicenter ( right side of the picture) but go on the left side. Amazing views. Beautiful houses. No tourists. I walk around the street at 14h.
Fantastic view of Ine Bay. Free parking here and there’s a small shop that sells local produce.
Restrooms are relatively dirty and have huge cockroaches. Apart from some vending machines no other amenities. The actual road station closes early and opens late, so for travelers spending the night it’s essential never available.
Some Funaya themed set meals, the stewed fishes are great intro to the area. Sashimi cuts are small, not sure if worth the price. Great view of the Ine, though quite far from the Boathouses which really requires you to be up close to appreciate them! Hope over to the park, that's a better place to view the Boathouses. This location is great only for the sweeping view of the Ine bay area.
View of the terrace is super to see whole bay area of Ine. However, the station of the road itself is a little old...
Fantastic place to take a rest. Good restaurant with stanning view. Free parking area.

The best sake and the loveliest people. Was like dropping in to see the Aunties! 🥰
Read a story about the very first female sake maker who owns this sake distillery. But not sure if they still run business and open to tourists.
Sake shop and factory. Only one parking spot for very small car. Otherwise, you can park 150 meters away.
Very very local brewery, wonderful sake range. I can't afford the top of range so I got something under. Still fantastic!
A local brewery that has a rich and special history. There are a few types of sake and they all taste nice. A good place to visit if you're travelling in the nearby region.
Nice small place where u can buy and try some local Sake!
赤米酒粕最中, not much of alcohol taste, but it’s worth a try!!
Great Sakagura(sake brewery) with phenomenal hospitality. Must come back soon.

We went to the nearby falls and saw this from the mountain, so stopped by. It was peaceful, though the attached park seems to have seen much better days. Interesting history and legend combine in this place.
This shrine is located in a special neighborhood where you must take a walk

(Translated by Google) Visited on November 20th. This is the shrine where the legend of Urashima Taro originated. The location is fantastic. It's near the famous tourist spot of Ine, but it's quiet and peaceful. The shrine buildings are quite dilapidated and are apparently in the process of being rebuilt, but I think the current buildings are still quite charming. This shrine has a long history, so if you have the chance, be sure to ask for a detailed explanation. The Tango Peninsula has long flourished through exchanges with the continent and was a cutting-edge city. The various legends are likely remnants of that.
(Translated by Google) After seeing the Funaya in Ine, I found this shrine on a map and went there. It said that it originated from Urashima Taro. It was an old-looking shrine. It seems that it is going to be renovated soon. After praying, I went to the shop. The goshuin (red seal) was handwritten, but I forgot my goshuin so I bought one because they were selling handwritten ones on paper. If you collect goshuin, it's a good idea to bring your goshuin book with you. The staff explained a lot about Urashima Shrine and Urashima Taro. I also bought a Tamatebako box containing amulets. I was told to display it in the east or south. Came here to see the Nii rice terraces but the steep ones along the upper mountain don't seem to be in use this year (2021). It's still a lovely area, and if you want to see the rice fields in Nii, you can head down the hill to the "main" road where there are still some larger ones right along the Japanese Sea. For that quintessential terraced rice field (with the tiers and unique shapes), I recommend traveling further up the coast (west) to the Sodeshi Rice Terraces.
(Translated by Google) Former Arai rice terraces. It is now fallow land. Weeds are growing and it is becoming difficult to distinguish between cultivated land and the ridge.

(Translated by Google) Its role as a rice terrace has now ended, and some traces of the rice terrace remain. Although you cannot see the beauty of Senmaida as a paddy field, it is still a scenic spot! Rather, it was a luxury to hear the occasional sound of waves and birdsong in the silence and silence. The scenery of the process of returning human-made things to nature is also an indescribable scene. However, if you are not using heavy machinery, I think it is better not to have one.
(Translated by Google) Postscript: We confirmed with the Ine Town Tourism Association on May 17th that the 2019 rice planting event has been cancelled. The owner of the rice terraces is elderly, so it looks like they will be left fallow (sad). I went to Golden Week, but the rice fields haven't been plowed yet, so I wonder if there's still a lot of rice planting going on...maybe it's being left fallow... The road leading to the rice terraces is very narrow, so be careful; there is a wider area slightly below the rice terraces, so if you want to park, that's about it.
