Paoay Church (St. Augustine Church) – Ilocos Norte Visiting Paoay Church last April was a dream come true. Standing before this magnificent structure was both breathtaking and deeply fulfilling. It’s not just one of the best churches I’ve been to—it’s a national treasure that lives up to every expectation. Known officially as the Church of Saint Augustine, Paoay Church is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a prime example of Earthquake Baroque architecture. Construction began in 1694 and was completed in 1710. Its massive, tapering buttresses—some more than a meter thick—were designed to help the church withstand earthquakes, making it both an architectural and engineering marvel of its time. The exterior is dramatic and fortress-like, drawing you in with its centuries-old charm. Inside, the atmosphere is more austere and peaceful, reflecting the simplicity and spirituality of Augustinian design. Many historical artifacts and preserved details from the Spanish colonial era can be seen, making it feel like you’re walking through a living museum of faith and history. One small downside is the parking situation—we had some difficulty finding a proper spot for the van we rented, especially with the limited maneuvering space around the church. If you’re traveling in a larger vehicle, it’s best to arrive early or prepare for a bit of patience. Still, the awe-inspiring presence of the church easily overshadows any minor inconvenience. From its rich heritage to the feeling of reverence it evokes, Paoay Church is more than just a destination—it’s an experience deeply rooted in Filipino identity and devotion.
We arrived in Paoay early in the morning, and wow! the church and the bell tower looked stunning with the sunrise in the background. The soft golden light made everything look even more historic and peaceful. We were not able to go in the middle of the "plaza" because the locals are setting up the place for an event maybe. There were already a lot of tourists. Everyone was just taking in the view, snapping photos, and enjoying the morning vibe. Paoay is a great stop if you love historical landmarks and beautiful architecture.
The San Agustin Church of Paoay, more popularly known as Paoay Church, is an outstanding example of Baroque architecture in the Philippines. Its massive structure, strengthened by large buttresses, reflects both historical artistry and engineering ingenuity. Recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the church stands as a testament to faith, culture, and resilience. Visiting the church offers not only a spiritual experience but also an appreciation of Philippine heritage.
❤️❤️❤️ majestic looking because of huge buttresses and an open space without obstructions. I just hope they keep its doors open for interior public viewing anytime for tourists. One of the four baroque churches in the Philippines included in UNESCO Heritage.
Visiting Paoay Church is like stepping into history—its massive coral-stone façade, grand buttresses, and separate three-story bell tower evoke awe at first sight. Built in 1710, this UNESCO World Heritage Site stands as the Philippines’ premier example of Earthquake Baroque architecture, fortified with 24 massive buttresses that shield it from seismic upheavals.
Paoy Church is a charming and peaceful spot with beautiful architecture . It’s a great place to experience local culture and enjoy some quiet reflection. The church is well-maintained, and the friendly community adds to its warmth. Perfect for visitors looking for a calm and authentic experience away from the busy tourist spots. We chose the Suba Sandunes because of the number of good reviews. We purchased our tickets via Klook but you can also call to book or just walk in. We chose to do the adventure by sunset and I highly recommend you do the same. I think, sunset is the most fascinating time to visit. Though it was Saturday, it was not crowded because we came off season. It was an exhilarating experience. Our 4x4 driver was good and he took us to those really exciting climbs and turns. He also took so many photos at every stop possible. The receiving staff were equally nice and accommodating.
Paoay Sand Dunes in Ilocos Norte is a thrilling adventure destination for those who love outdoor activities. The vast, rolling dunes create a breathtaking desert-like landscape, perfect for adrenaline-pumping 4x4 rides and sandboarding. The experience of speeding over the dunes and sliding down the slopes is both exciting and unforgettable. The best time to visit is during sunrise or sunset when the views are stunning, and the weather is cooler. If you're looking for adventure in Ilocos, this is a must-try!
4x4 ATV: 4.5/5 Crazy cool driver: 5/5 hold tight and enjoy the ride. Experience was priceless and very thrilling. (Tried the 30 minute sand dune ride plus sand boarding) IG worthy: 6/5 Manong photography skills: superb! Very considerate and mindful of lighting and angles.
Literally one of the best part in our vacation. They accomodate the people to the best of their abilities. We are going to avail 1.5k worth of service for 2 pax but got offered 2k with 500 discount. Such great deal even at the early time of 6am. Will recommend this to other people. Very accomodating and caring.
Fun place with superior customer service; they will offer pictures every step of the way. They also have a gentile path or a more fun path. Hard to go for the gentile path when you come with kids.
Super fun experience!! This is my second time going here and it’s still as thrilling. The staff were nice especially the ones at the sand boarding area. I do wish they had a package for only the soft copies of the official photos. Highly recommend for adventure seekers!
This was some extreme activity, not for a weak heart person. It was fun but slightly dangerous so you need to hold on tight or see yourself tossing on air😂 but our driver is professional, always reminding us to hold tight for any tricky terrain so we were safely toured round the sand dunes and stopped by the beach shore to take some pictures. Overall experience was exhilarating and fun, will do it again if I will still be fit for it otherwise it's for young people. There is another activity after the adventure and it is included in the payment so you don't need to pay again. You could buy bottled water too if you end up thirsty and after the activities you could see the pictures you want to pay for souvenirs.
Love the experience but the only problem in the place is that if you lose something either you get it back or some other guests takes it instead. The establishment doesn't have the right system to ensure that the actual owner gets their item back. Other than that the experience is fun and really enjoyable. I just wish that they're careful in people who would take other people's stuff
