This is a historical town and street that kept the reminisce of a time long ago in Japan. Of particular interest was this street lined with white houses that used to belong to shop owners and their stores. The back of the street was used as warehouses and that was why there are these little bridges across the stream. Very nice setting.
On Oct 4, 2024, my wife brought me here. On the face of the old warehouses, they didn’t look interesting to me. My theory has been that anything interesting should be communicative by itself, without the need for researching why it is interesting.
There's not much to see. There aren't many restaurants. It's a historically significant place.
Historical place for short visit. 1 to 2 hours is sufficient since not much shops or restaurants opened during our visit on Sunday.
Nice small quiet traditional Japanese village. You can see many small shops and most of all there is a great bakery place. A bread looking like a shape of fish with a filling of red bean paste. It costs ¥100 for a piece. You have to try it. Speaking of it now I can remember how crispy the bun was and the filling was so sweet and creamy.
We did a one hour tour at Kurayoshi "Shirakabe" White Warehouses in Tottori on our 30th anniversary trip, and it was fascinating! The warehouses were from various eras from Edo to Meiji, with glass that was warped due to the manufacturing methods of the day. The guide showed us all the various differences from era to era, which was really cool. The red "Sesshu" tiles looked lovely against the white walls, and black burnt cedar wood skirtings, and it was great to learn about the architectural style of these protected buildings. One oddity was that several shops had life sized "sexy anime mascot girl" cutouts in their store fronts. Maybe "otaku" types would like it, but, these were jarring and added nothing to the history or attraction of the place. Our regret here was that we wished the tour let us have time to browse a bit as there was a craft beer brewery shop, a cool looking café, gallery, local goods, and others which were beckoning. Also it was raining. They say “in Tottori, even if you forget your bento, don’t forget an umbrella” because the wet is so unpredictable.
Located near central Kurayoshi is this historic area where every house, store shop or warehouse takes you back to the Edo era. Lots of great craft shops, small coffee shops, Japanese sweet shops, places to experience old crafts with workshops, and the chance to do Japanese archery. Lots of free parking. Buses from the station are also easy to catch.
Suitable outing for a leisurely afternoon - immerse yourself in the history of old Japan n enjoy a cup of coffee. Just pop in the tourists information centre right next to the train station n get bus information and local map to this spot.

Make sure you come with some room in your stomach! The daily sample cup of three different types of pear is soooooo delicious. So was the pear ice cream. This pear museum is so well maintained and very educational! Lots of really cute old technologies that explain the process of pear planting, selecting, harvesting, etc. As foreigners, we got a 50% discount! Another pleasant surprise! Either way, it’s totally worth visiting! Staffs were super friendly and helpful.
This is the place for pear lovers to learn everything about pears, from farm to table. Foreigners show passports and receive 50% off on the entrance fee. In the pear kitchen present entrance receipt and sample 3 kinds of pears. My favorite is OUSYU. The center of the museum is a giant pear tree, the showcase of the Tottori pear industry. Under careful cultivation, it’s more than 100 years old and said to produce thousands pears a year. What a marvel of agricultural technology! JR and local bus service are not fully synced. We arrived kurayoshi station and realized no bus available within an hour. We took a taxi instead. The fare was 1550 yen. Just an FYI.
I did not expect the Pear museum to be this fantastic. The displays may seem old school, yet the content is really good. It explains how the 20th century Pear is invented. From improving the soil, how to grow, how to harvest and automatically scanned the sweetness of pearls to packaging, it demonstrates the jointed effort of Tottori prefecture farmers. I especially liked a display, showing the whole process of growing pears. When you pressed the button, it showed you pictures of production, a little camera will run around the model, showing different sections. You can also have a taste of different pears, and finally I ended up buying some souvenir home.
Let it be known, the pears here are huge. This is a museum dedicated to the pear farmers and their craft of achieving such quality of fruit. The museum showed the route of the pear seeds from China to all parts of the world. There is a display of the different types of pears across the continents and the pear season of Japan. If you are in the neighborhood, this is a good site to visit.
Good for family, either having kids or elderly Normal fare for individual Adults is ¥400/ppl however there is a special fare for foreigners just ¥150/ppl only. Everyone can have a complimentary cup of pear in 3 different kinds for your tasting 👍🏼👍🏼
One of my favorite memories from my road trip from Tottori to Sakaiminato. The pear museum is AMAZING! We had to rush so just spent around 1 hour... But I wish I could have stayed longer. They had so many fun and interesting rooms to explore.
For tourists, you only pay 150 yen, as of October 29th 2025. regular price is 300 yen. you get to taste three different kind of pears. is a well designed museum. interesting.
I enjoyed the museum so much and all the cute machines. I also enjoyed trying the 3 different types of pears. They were delicious. The blended up buying many souvenirs and tried a pear flavoured ice cream.

I stopped here to take a rest during a walking tour through Shimane in January 2025. On that day it happened to be snowing heavily and I sought shelter within the 道の駅, sitting at the rest corner and having a hot coffee. The interior was very homely and I enjoyed the cosy atmosphere. There was also a restaurant, though I did not buy anything to eat. After 30min or so, a staff member came to talk to me and I told him about my plans. To my surprise, he offered to give me a ride to the nearest convenience store along my walking route, and said it was dangerous to be walking in such a heavy snowstorm. I was very touched by his kindness as it must have been inconvenient for him to drive in such severe conditions as well. Especially since I am a foreigner who spoke little Japanese, I am very grateful that he went out of his way to help me out. Thank you very much!
(Translated by Google) I stopped by on my way back from Tottori. At first, I just wanted to look at souvenirs, but I saw [wasabi bowl] in the food area, and since it was lunchtime, I decided to have lunch. I had wasabi rice bowl, my wife had medicinal lunch, and the kids had beef bone ramen and nabeyaki udon. Can it be harvested in this area? You can also add wasabi yourself. This is served with soy sauce, but raw wasabi has a strong scent that hits the nose. However, it is more delicious than I imagined. I finished eating even though I was thirsty. Recommended for wasabi lovers. I sampled the medicinal lunch, and it was also delicious. It is better not to underestimate it as a roadside station restaurant. I made the right choice to eat here. The farm-fresh corner is also well-stocked, and there are a variety of souvenirs available. The products were unique, and I bought some that would be suitable for a local supermarket. I learned that wasabi is a specialty of this area. I thought it wasn't just Shizuoka. They were selling real wasabi. I felt safe buying wasabi in a tube here, but since the manufacturer was from Nagano, I realized that I should have bought local wasabi. It would make sense if the local wasabi was processed in Nagano. The dog run was well maintained. The toilet is clean. The waste disposal machine was working properly. There was a rainbow flag toilet. I thought it was well prepared with a lot of thought. By the way, the pronunciation was "Inubasari". During the Edo period, it was a mountain pass on the border between Hoki and Mimasaka on the way to and from Bitchu, and was the lowest of the mountain passes on both borders, and was often used as a trunk line for connecting Yin and Yang. Also written as Inusa. In the Tenbun era (15320-1555), Kyoto's Shokoku-ji chief priest Myoan Koretaka writes in his ``Tamajin'' that the stone rock was sent to the Shunnaga clan of Hoki Province and ``entered the valley of Yafuri-no-tani to Sakushu,'' so it is known that this pass was used for commuting to and from Mimasaka since ancient times. When Yakumo Koizumi (Lafcadio Hearn) was transferred from Tokyo to Matsue, it is said that he got off at Himeji, which was the terminus of the then privately run Sanyo Railway (later the Japanese National Railways Sanyo Main Line → JR West Japan), transferred to a rickshaw, and passed through this mountain pass. The Inugabi Pass Road opened on October 29, 1997, and was no longer designated as a national highway on April 1, 1999. This roadside station is included in Romantic Road 313. Is there a roadside station in a place like this? ! It suddenly appeared! I stopped by because I wanted to take a restroom break. The store was clean and the staff had good customer service, but I felt like the product lineup was small. I haven't used the restaurant, but I would like to stop by again if I have a chance. It's unnecessary, but since winter is coming, I wonder if security in the evening will be okay? That's what I thought too. (Translated by Google) The origin of the name ``Utsubukiyama'' is wonderful, along with the legend of a celestial maiden. A celestial maiden lands at the foot of a mountain, and a farmer hides her clothes, and she has two children with this farmer. In order to return to heaven, the celestial maiden desperately needed the hidden robe, so she asked her son where it was hidden, found it, and flew away from the top of Mt. Utsubuki. The two remaining children hit the gong and played the flute at the top of Mt. Utsubuki, missing their mother, so they named the mountain Mt. Utsubuki. The printmaker Tomisaburo Hasegawa (no younger brother) left this legend (the origin of the name Utsubukiyama) in his work ``Fuefuki Doji.'' The stone monument stands quietly at the foot of Hagoromo Pond at the entrance of Utsubuki Park. Every time I look at this stone monument, I am reminded of what Mr. Hasegawa looked like on that day. 20200415 In the early afternoon, an elderly man wearing a hat and hiking clothes came down from Mt. Utsubuki. It's obvious that the neighbors have a daily routine. ``Utsubukiyama'' is shaped like a bowl and is a symbol that can be seen from anywhere in Kurayoshi City. It is a mountain that is close and loved by the citizens.

Before the war, it was once used as a classroom at Seitoku Elementary School and Kurayoshi Nishi High School. On Oct 4, 2024, my wife and bumped into this self-service free museum. All we needed to do was to turn on and off the lights upon entering and exiting. It was a great experience to us as we felt so exclusive in a public museum!
(Translated by Google) A memorial museum that you can enter for free. There is also a steam locomotive, and there is a promenade along the track ruins, so you can enjoy the atmosphere. The building of the memorial hall also has a nice atmosphere, and I wonder if it was a reused station building or something? The memorial hall is not locked and the lights can be turned on and off by yourself. There are not many museums like this. There are many valuable materials and photo exhibits inside, and just looking at them somehow moves my heart. Even though I'm not particularly a train fan (although I might like it a little), it might be irresistible for train fans. Even now, as railway lines continue to be abandoned in various places, I think memorial museums and museums like this are valuable in order to preserve their history for future generations. A cool museum with figure exhibits on three floors, the first floor being a special, changing exhibit! Nice views of the cityscape and the nearby park vegetation from the rooftop area.
The Kurayoshi Figure Museum was founded as an initiative to save the city's beloved, but vacant, round school building from demolition. It has been fully renovated and equipped with modern facilities, now hosting around 2000 different figures in all shapes and sizes as well as two shops for local souvenirs and, of course, figures. The museum is a stunning building on the inside, as much as on the outside, with its spiral staircase and fan-like rooms. I enjoyed the variety on display, which consisted not only of figures based on pop culture but also of animals, dinosaurs, and more. There is also a room where you can freely pick up and pose the figures to create unique pictures. One of the rooms is fitted as a classroom from the 1950s, and you can even get up to the roof and get a 360-degree view of the surroundings. Tickets are available for the temporary exhibition (which was the "Kaiju Theater" when I visited) at ¥600 and for the permanent exhibition on the upper two floors at ¥1000. There is also a discounted ticket for all floors at ¥1200, which I would recommend to first-timers. Even when you travel by public transport, it is easy to reach by bus from the Kurayoshi Station. Twice a day there is also a bus that goes to and from Gōshō Aoyama Manga Factory in just thirty minutes, so it's easy to visit both in a single day. Of course, other slower connections are also available throughout the day.
Entrance fee is a little expensive at ¥1000. There are rooms with themes such as Animals, Dinosaurs and Japanese Culture. There was also a classroom that looked like something out of Anime. Roof was also accessible for a nice view of the surroundings.
there's many section of figure, just explore your imagination and knowledge
Even though we are not manga fans we really enjoyed it
It was OK for me because I'm not really a fan of anime. The history of the school interested me more. However, 1000yen is abit steep for a small place.
Great collection of figurine from all kinds of things
ticket fee is too high
