We stayed in Le Temple Hotel and was recommended to try and join this monastery for a meditation session with their monks. We arrived at around 6.30pm, walked around the beautiful monastery before we were invited to come into the meditation space by a monk who has already started meditating on his own. We joined him, spent an hour of meditating in silence, and left him a small donation after. It was such a peaceful experience. We were told that they meditate everyday and open the space for public to join them, 7pm-8pm. Not sure of the accuracy of this though! We started around 6.50pm and ended at 7.50pm as well.
We visited this Buddhist monastery which is located next to Mendut Temple. There is a mix of Buddhist architectural style here including from Thailand. The main shrine has a peaceful reclining Buddha and it was good to pray here. The grounds have several interesting structures and entrance is free of charge.
It's calm and peaceful, but there's not much to see. Sure, there are statues and a few buildings that look old but none are more than 100 years old. Cool to visit if you're in the neighborhood though. Not very crowded and free to enter. One caveat is that I did not see one monk in this monastery... Weird.
The Mendut Buddhist Monastery is associated with Candi Mendut (Mendut Temple), a significant 9th-century Buddhist temple located in Central Java, Indonesia. Here are the key points: Location: Mendut is in Mendut village, Mungkid sub-district, Magelang Regency, Central Java, Indonesia. It is located approximately 3 kilometers east of the famous Borobudur Temple. Significance:Candi Mendut, along with Pawon Temple and Borobudur Temple, lie on a single straight line, suggesting a significant ritual or symbolic connection. Mendut is considered the oldest of the three temples, built during the reign of King Indra of the Sailendra dynasty around the early 9th century. Temple Features:The temple itself is renowned for housing three magnificent, well-preserved stone statues in its main chamber: the central Dhyani Buddha Wairocana (in a rare "Western-style" seated posture with both feet on the ground), flanked by the Bodhisattvas Avalokitesvara and Vajrapani. The exterior is adorned with beautiful bas-reliefs depicting Buddhist teachings and stories. Monastery: Right next to Candi Mendut is the Mendut Buddhist Monastery, which maintains serene grounds and serves as a place for Buddhist monks and meditation. Visitors are often welcome to explore the monastery grounds. Rituals: Mendut Temple plays an important role in the annual Vesak (Waisak) ritual, the celebration of the birth, enlightenment, and passing away of the Buddha. The procession traditionally starts from Mendut, proceeds to Pawon, and culminates at Borobudur.
It's a private Buddhist Monastery but open for public. The monastery is very serene and spiritual. When visit we should respect their rules and support their sustainability.
Beautiful and quiet monastery. The abbot YM Bhante Pannavaro Mahathera is always very friendly, accomodating and helpful, appreciating his warm hospitality even invited us for lunch at the temple,
If you’re visiting Candi Mendut, don’t miss the opportunity to explore the Mendut Buddhist Monastery, located right at the entrance. The best part? Entry is entirely free! This place is a hidden gem, offering a serene and calming atmosphere that feels like a peaceful retreat from the outside world. The monastery is impeccably clean and well-maintained, with a quiet and shady environment thanks to the abundance of trees and plants. It’s a perfect spot for a leisurely stroll, as the area is very walkable and inviting. As you wander around, you’ll encounter numerous Buddha statues and other beautiful ornaments that add to the spiritual and cultural ambience. Whether you’re a history enthusiast, a spiritual seeker, or simply someone who enjoys nature and tranquillity, Mendut Buddhist Monastery is a wonderful place to visit. It’s a great addition to your trip to Candi Mendut and offers a refreshing experience that’s both relaxing and inspiring. Highly recommended for anyone looking to enjoy a moment of peace and reflection!
The Mendut monastery and temple are a hidden gem, and definitely underrated. With free entry, the site features several buildings dedicated to prayer and others for meditation. Active monks still live here, giving the place an authentic and peaceful atmosphere. What makes it truly unique is the collection of statues, all donated by different Buddhist countries across Asia. As you walk through, you encounter a fascinating mix of artistic styles—Cambodian, Thai, Japanese, and more. Beautiful, serene, and absolutely worth a visit.
