Popular ski resort with runs for all levels of skiing & snowboarding, plus an food court.

One of my favorite places to ski/snowboard in Japan. Not crowded most of the times and many options on the slopes for different levels and skills. facilites are nice with plenty of options for food. Hotel, rentals , food, toilets and all in one place. Surroundings is very quiet but great to rest after 🏂 session. Might not be your place if you’re looking for nightlife.
Located in Iwate Prefecture, Appi Kogen Ski Resort, is one of the country’s top ski destinations, often compared to resorts in Hokkaido due to its high-quality, dry powder snow. It features 21 runs with a good mix of beginner, intermediate, and advanced slopes, as well as long runs up to 5.5 km. Pros: • Excellent Snow Quality – Light and dry powder similar to Hokkaido. • Long, Well-Groomed Runs – Great for cruising and ideal for intermediate skiers. • Fewer Crowds – Compared to popular resorts like Niseko or Hakuba. • Modern Facilities – Good accommodation options, onsen, and dining. Cons: • Limited Après-Ski Scene – Quiet nightlife, more family-friendly. • Weather Can Be Harsh – Occasionally strong winds and cold temperatures. • Less Off-Piste Terrain – Not the best for extreme backcountry riders. Overall Verdict: We had a great time and the resort is a fantastic choice for those who prioritise high-quality snow, well-maintained slopes, and a quieter, more relaxed ski experience. Best suited for those looking for a less commercial resort compared to Niseko.
Despite early suspension of gondola and chair lifts up the hill top due to 4-5m/s strong wind on our last day of skiing, APPI is one of the best ski resorts in Tohoku region for intermediate and advanced skiers; especially, on sunny day, ones can enjoy those miles long non-stop scenic runs from hill top to bottom. However, catering wasn’t ideal comparing to resorts like Zao Onsen.
APPI Kogen Ski Resort is great, but the slopes are a bit too challenging. I nearly gave myself a heart attack — felt like I was racing to the bottom of the mountain!
Awesome resort! I rented my gear through appi and it was quick efficient and not too expensive. Pass is slightly more expensive than other ski spots nearby but this resort is awesome! There is a beginners area that’s a great place to learn and the gondola is really nice. Employees are nice. Food is good. They have decent gift shops and a spot to buy snowboards and skis and accessories.
The BIGGEST ski resort in north east region of Japan, how good is that? The only downside is that their lifts go pretty slow, with people falling when they get off you usually spend more time on the chairlifts than going downhill 😭some slopes are too flat in certain areas so you might stop in the middle.
It’s April and powder keeps coming. Tree run has powder up to my waist. I had so much fun riding here. The hotel is dated, somewhat clean. i ask to change room because mine smells like old carpet. But they are very hard to talk to and not willing to do anything about it. Instead, they brought in room refresher. :( What a miss opportunity. It could be a Top notch resort with such amazing snow and good views from each room. If they can only update the furnish a little bit. I am more than happy to offer them free design services to exchange family ski vacation. I have 20 years of architecture/ interior design practice in New York. Transform this place is so easy and inexpensive because the bone is good. Bar is in wrong location, no wonder there is no one there. Another miss opportunity to create business and provide social place. Restaurants are decent. Although they listed many options, lots of food are coming from the same place. So variety is not so great. Outdoor onsen is really nice and beautiful. You will have view of mountain in front of you. Water is good with no smell. Ski runs are supper nice. I love the black diamond that stretch to red and green in one straight shot-3km. You can go so fast, so fun. Tree runs are good, but trees are not so big like other resort. However, powder is so good that beats anything. Free shuttle from airport is also amazing. I can’t believe they sent a 20 person shuttle bus just for me. So overall, it’s excellent and I definitely coming back.
This review will include the slopes and the restaurants. Appi ski resort is the only one I know. For that it is hard for me to compare it with other ski resorts. I like it here. From what I have gathered the resort is smaller compared to European ones. But everyone I heard really thinks the snow there is some of the best they have tried. I would recommend to come after New Years Eve for a couple of reasons. During that time the slopes get quite busy, and you will have to wait to get in the lifts. Also at that time there are still many slopes closed. We are now in the third week of January and all of them are open. Including the snow park. This one is fun, with jumps and boxes, it is located at the bottom. During weekdays (at the moment), there is almost nobody on the slopes. Which gives you a lot of space to practice safely. You will find groomed slopes and a couple of ungroomed and tree runs. If you stay there for a longtime you might grow bored of the slopes. There are quite some possibilities for off-piste. There is a patrol which will actually take your pass away if caught. So it is probably better if you are using a day pass. That being said, my friend last year did a lot of off piste for weeks and never was bothered. Food wise there are 5 restaurants. Indian, Chinese, Japanese, Italian and Korean. All of them are Japanese style though. It doesn’t taste authentic. Italian one have edible pizza, but very tiny. Indian one was nothing special and rather expensive. Not much to say about the others beside the Japanese one selling ramen. That is probably the cheapest option. Taste good and the staff is nice. If you head out of the restaurant to get into the central area, you will find more food. Last year it was possible to get kebab, rather good. This year you will find Indian food. Proper Indian food. For 750Y you get a curry and a naan. Very tasty. This is the food you will also find in their restaurant located in Appikogen. Around this area you will also find stores that sell various products, food, gear,... I will attach some photos, bad quality but should give a wide sample of what you will find. The view from up there is not the prettiest I have ever seen but still, on a clear day, it’s beautiful. Enjoy and stay safe!

i visited Mt Hachimantai on 2 Oct. it has some nice autumn foliage and weather was pleasantly cooling. Do not that walk from carpark is about 30mins if you plan to go Dragon eye. there are total of 3 "ponds' including dragon eyes. Thus do cater some time for walking besides the drive up mountain.
I visited this mountain on May 5th. Around 80% of the mountain path was covered by snow but I didn’t use climbing irons although I brought them. You can reach the top of mountain for only 30 minutes so a part of visitors climbed with very casual wear. I recommend here to those who want to casually enjoy climbing and nice views!
Awesome here, good environment and nice autumn leaf spot.
I had a chance to hike Hachimantai on August 10,2020. I would like to share my experience for those who like to hike here I should say this hike one of the best hiking experience for me in terms of the beautiful scenery. The hike starts at Hachimantai Mountaintop Rest area. You get here through one of the best scenery driving roads( Hachimantai Aspet Line). There are lots of photo taking spots on the way. The parking area is not for free here. There is another one about 100 m. away and for free. You can park there. It just takes few minutes to get the trial head. There is a bathroom on the way as well. The path is very well maintained and there is not much ascending. It is covered either with straight woods or rocks and concrete. It is not challenging at all. I think it is suitable for kids. Although it was foggy the scenery was spectacular. There are many crater lakes which make you hike fun. In May when the snow starts melting one of these lakes Kagaminuma forms a shape which looks like a dragon eye. The peak is 1613 m. The total course takes around 1.5 hour. You can go fast to make it shorter but I recommend you take your time and enjoy the nature. There are mountain huts with gorgeous scenery. There is a connected trial to Mt. Gentamori if you like to challenge yourself even more. Overall it is an amazing hiking trial. Highly recommended. Extra tips: there are outdoor volcanic hot springs with natural trials nearby. Highly recommended if you have time. Check out Goshogake, onamemoto and Fukenoyu hot spring
Very nice hike in snow (late May!), with the guide offered when you ride the nature bus from Morioka Station. I understand Japanese but I guess it is okay if you don't understand, just follow him, but you need to let them know when you board the bus perhaps. They asked and the Taiwanese aren't quite aware of such service. Walked through all the important sights with him. The dragon eye wasn't quite stunning that day, but the other ponds (or literally the swamps) were very beautiful. Unluckily the visibility wasn't that high but could still see nearer mountains.
Easily one of the most accessible mountain hiking areas in Iwate, just 20 minutes from the carpark over flat terrain and your already being treated with fantastic sights.
Come before the busy season it is peaceful and beautiful

Very good place to stop and grab a bite to eat. And the view of Iwate mountain from here is amazing too.
They have an interesting selection of soft serves at the shop down the end. The toilets etc... Were nice and clean and there is a little shop with local items etc...
Great market selling locally produced food. Seasonal vegetables, mushrooms and plants are especially good 👍
The food was pretty good and they have mini size rice bowls for small eaters
Nice place for coffee break, and the view of mt. Iwate tops it.
A fresh local vegetable are cheap.
(Translated by Google) (August 8, 2025) This roadside station is located just off the Nishine Interchange on the Tohoku Expressway. I stopped by to pick up some snacks on my way to Fujishichi Onsen. The facility, including the parking lot, isn't particularly large, but it's spacious enough that you can enjoy it even if you don't have a specific purpose. Spinach seems to be a local specialty, and there were dishes using it on the restaurant menu, as well as a variety of souvenirs. I also bought some green tofu with spinach and some Nanbu rice crackers with wild grapes. It seemed crowded for a weekday, but that may have been because it was the Friday before the Obon holiday. There is a geothermal museum on the grounds of the Matsukawa Geothermal Power Plant, but general vehicles can only enter up to the entrance gate. There is a space in front of the entrance gate where you can park several cars, so you can use it as a parking lot. There is no problem as you can enter by walking. As you enter the premises, there is a mountain stream flowing and the geothermal museum is immediately on your right. There is a cooling tower in the back, which has a spectacular appearance, but there is a strict fence that prevents anyone except those involved from approaching it. The inside of the geothermal museum is not large, and the exhibits are compact, so it only takes about 5 minutes to just look at the exhibits. There are videos shown here, and you can choose your favorite video from among the three to watch, so if you have time, I recommend watching all three videos. Rather than a bad movie, I had a wonderful time watching the story of the struggle from completion to operation of a geothermal power plant in Hachimantai in the middle of winter. Great courses, powder stashes with bit of off piste tree courses. Food excellent. Lifts could of been detachable quads or 1 gondola would of made better lift rides. Will return if have chance
A smaller sized resort, but they had some nice tree and side country runs for those that wanted to get off piste. Good for a weekday with fresh snow - no crowds much pow. (Update 5 Feb 25: hit it on a deep powder day. Knee-deep in the trees - amazing. Adding a pic of the menu too. Tasty ramen.)
A very small resort but Fantastic services by lift operators. Great trees runs. Large lunch serving. Free shuttle bus to Hachimantai ski resort. Lift tickets a bit pricey for small resort like this.
Great little resort, just 3 double low speed chairs to get to the top. So it can take about 30min to get to the top from the bottom. Fantastic runs and awesome tree runs, your allowed to go in. Best tree skiing resort. Definitely worth a visit for a day
It is a fun ski field. But, it is definitely not for total beginners. Hachimantai Ski Resort proper is much better for learning on. There are no runs to warm up or learn on and the easiest run is for those who can already reliably slow themselves on a slope. That said my nine year old had no issues on his third day ever skiing (he snow plows a bit but can weave side to side doing it and straightens up on the clear bits). The upper slopes (third lift) are very steep and fast so make sure you can confidently turn before attempting. Not suitable for kids up there unless they can ski very very confidently. The run down from the second lift to the bottom however is great. There are lots of humps to play on and one of the runs has a section with a long rounded wall which was great fun. The restaurant is good. The ski rental is OK, but it's very small and takes some time, the equipment was fine though. The lifts are pretty basic chair lifts (one triple, two doubles) with no wind protection at all and fairly small and with a manual safety bar.
Shimomura ski area, is the best kept secret for ski area on Iwate's. A little high level but not crowded and great snow
Good snow condition ❄️❄️❄️ Not much people, chairlifts available only. But we had a good afternoon here 👍🏻😊
Great slopes for beginners and intermediates. Weather was grand, and just the right amount of powder when I went. Food court is a little small, but definitely recommend the pork cutlet curry; amazing.

(Translated by Google) October 5, 2023 Visited for the first time in several years. A fishing spot that is mostly managed by lure anglers. There were just us and one other person for frying. I bought an afternoon ticket for 3000 yen. A reviewer said that there were fewer fish being stocked this year, so they weren't able to catch as much as they used to, but for some reason, all the fish they caught were 40-over and 60cm class, and you could even catch salmon with curved noses. Great for relieving the stress of not being allowed to fish. My wife was also very excited about her first 60 over. (First time pipe fishing) All flies used at this managed fishing spot are barbless. This refers to the use of hooks without burrs, including lures. Please note that worm-based, plastic, and rubber-based products are also not allowed. There are many families here, and it's a great place to have fun together. The fishing spot itself is recommended as you can enjoy using lures, bait, and grilled fish. The trout here are usually 40 to 60 cm long, which are considered big fish in regular tube fishing, but there are also trout of 70 cm and 80 cm. There are also itou that are over the meter. For those who come, we recommend a rod suitable for big fish and a line of 4 to 6 lb. The price is about the same as other tube fishing. I think the difficulty level is relatively low, probably because weekdays are a day off and the fish are rested (however, it's still difficult to aim for 70 or 80). The pond is a little small...If about 15 people come, both the upper and lower ponds will be filled. Lures and lines may interfere with others, so please talk to each other and yield. Fantastic view to photograph in autumn 📸🍁🍂 #naturephotography #fallvibes
Amazing waterfall. Plenty of snow in early April but please note that the paths are covered over then
It was nice experience in a hot summer day. Not much water but the atmosphere was cool and refreshing.
This is a very beautiful place to view autumn leaves along the Hachimantai area. The scene is truly perfect: the contrast between the turquoise water and the vibrant colored leaves creates an unforgettable sight. For convenience, free parking is available at the nearby Iwate Prefectural Citizens' Forest Forestry Museum.
Great views from the bridge of the river, forests and mountains. There is a path and stairs that lead down to the river
This bridge overlooking the Matsukawa river is a famous spot for viewing the spectacular fall colors along this river gorge. If you're in the area in late October, this is a must-see spot!
Stop worth making, For the view is breathtaking.

Wear shoes with thick soles, like hiking shoes. Walking on lava rocks with my walking shoes was a pain. Besides that, everything else, it was a great experience. These lava rocks were from the last major eruption in 1732 which makes it 292 years old! The views are also spectacular. Also, try and go on a cool day (spring or autumn), summer is a killer, literally like going for a sauna. 🥵
Nice place to catch a great view of mt iwate and the surrounding harden lava trail. There is a 30+ parking lots available. The walking path is pathed i think using small loose lava rocks so please wear proper shoes when walking. After you reach the viewing platform simply follow the path back to the main road, turn left and walk about 15min back to the carpark.
Interesting place with a whole sea of black rocks which were lava erupted from Mt Iwate about 270 years ago.
Nice walk on very uneven surface, but worth it! Amazing views of Mt Iwate.
Visited late October but I think I arrived a bit too early for the fall colours. But nonetheless it was a very interesting scenery from what other attractions. The path could get quite rough at times so would recommend decent shoes.
Beautiful and fun to walk. Just a bit slippery. There’s a view point at the end of the trail. Best to walk around sunset time.
If you want to get experience a real volcano 🌋 and a massive field of hardened lava in Japan, this is the best place for it. The view of the Iwate San (Iwate Mountain) is fabulous.
An andesite black rock bands that flow from the northeast slope of Mt. Iwate are a spectacular observation route that allows us to walk through the panoramic landscape. It erupted in the 1700s and still there over 300 years, leaving little tree and traces of eruptions of the time. When we walked along the stone path It seems that we have gone to another world. In addition, the view of Mt. iwate makes it even more beautiful.

i visited Mt Hachimantai on 2 Oct. it has some nice autumn foliage and weather was pleasantly cooling.

Genbu no Iwa literally translates to "Basalt Rock" - so this is a basalt rock cliff face that is beautiful all year round but particularly spectacular in the fall when the cliffs above are on fire with color. Since it's right above the Matsukawa River you can walk along the river, skip stones, and generally enjoy relaxing on the water here. It's a great little scenic spot that is well worth a stop if you're nearby!

There is no dedicated parking lot, but many people have parked in the open area on the riverbank down the road. It's muddy and there are large rocks, so caution is advised if you're driving a low-slung vehicle. The columnar jointed rock surface is beautiful, and it was a great spot, combining well with the autumn leaves and the bluish river. I don't get to see columnar jointing very often, so it was great to be able to see this major natural phenomenon. It was also fun to be surrounded by nature and walk along the river. It was autumn, so the autumn leaves were beautiful, but it's a place that seems like it could be enjoyed in all four seasons.
