The food was very thought provoking and delicious. It's fine dining so don't expect huge meals, however the bread and snacks to start certainly helped. Standouts were the sour dough bread, black garlic puree and carrots, onion puree and potato and seaweed terrine, the pumpkin dumpling, and the passionfruit and mandarin drink. Some of the matching drinks were not to our taste or style, however we went there for the experience and that is certainly what was provided. We both enjoyed learning more about the food and hearing stories about the farm and waste minimisation, the server talks you through the next course when it arrives at the table. I can honestly say that it's one of the best attentive restaurant service that I've ever experienced in Wellington. We started with the comte (cheese) souffle and focaccia bread, which was very different but amazing. For mains we had the grilled octopus, spiced lamb ribs with a side of asparagus. The food here is absolutely phenomenal - in particular, the waffles. For $25, the waffles were a great portion size, presented beautifully and was overall a 10/10 meal. Overall, I really enjoyed my time at Egmont St. Eatery and I would highly recommend that everyone tries their waffles. They were potentially the best waffles I have ever consumed in my life. I did find the cafe itself a little bit loud due to the music volume and conversing patrons, but that is more just of a personal preference. Awesome work team. We also shared the panna cotta and the matcha creme brulee (matcha is everywhere these days I swear!) the panna cotta had quite a strong earl grey flavour and the poached pear slices were not soaked in sugar syrup which was refreshing, and the matcha creme brulee was just right, creamy and velvety but the matcha flavour comes through and worked very well - might be a bit too much raspberry sauce on the side but it’s up to you how much you want to add to it!
