If you like oldy worldly things then the is real ale pub is certainly worth a visit. One entrance is situated on Friargate with signage on two other streets this 2024 real ale pub winner has some real charm inside. Original furnishings and wall posters that complement the historic architecture , with small cosy rooms off the main bar and a busy bar scene you should find a corner to enjoy the great range of real ales with knowledgeable staff to help choose.

Detailed review: Situated at a stone throw distance from Harris museum and bang opposite the back entrance of St. George's shopping centre, Black horse is a vintage gem among the pubs in Preston.
What greets one are the fascinating interiors of mosaic floor, tiled bar with a plethora of options and the walls which are adorned with pictures of old Preston.
The front two rooms have basic but comfortable seating setup in an early nineteenth century world feel with the decor, lead bordered thick glass windows and added charm thanks to the real log fires.
The music is played via a jukebox and there is no specific genre which adds a good surprise element.
The hospitality is courteous and there are always some regulars at any point of time.
Limited/no food options but it is surrounded by plenty of fast food joints.
This place is ideal for beer and banter as life goes by.
Worth a visit.

Great selection of ale, great atmosphere and a good juke box to add to it.
Harry and Dani have alwaysade me feel part of the family ever since I first stumbled through the entrance.

The Plau has become one of our favourite places to come for drinks, the staff are always friendly and welcoming. It's an unusual building with some history behind it. There are 3 bars on different levels our favourite is the cellar where they always have a good selection of Rivington ales. I particularly like the subdued lighting, it is easy on the eyes. Also sometimes they light aroma candles and scented sticks which adds to the chilled mood of the place. Highly recommend venue !

First visit to The Plae in Preston. We first had a drink in the cave bar which was very nice, good selection of IPA beers. There is a well which goes done some way and it’s normally let up, unfortunately not on our visit.
We had booked a table at the top of the venue, on a nice day there is a lovely area to sit outside, very Mediterranean looking.
A great selection of tapas dishes, and all at a good price. And to be fair you get plenty.
Staff were pleasant but for me when you are shown to your table the first thing to ask is can I get you some drinks! And very difficult to get their attention at times.

Lovely building on every single floor and room, the decor is honestly something to admire just like the staff and food.
Although it can be quite busy and sometimes booked out the staff do their best to keep ontop of everything, any mistakes are rectified as soon as possible and if you order a lot of dishes it's a constant flux of food being brought to your table, each dish is well made and full of varied flavours.
Honestly it's a great spot to dine and enjoy company with a partner or friends, good drinks are also available with quite a nice variety, though not many ciders there is a lot of cocktails and other drinks to enjoy.
I'd definitely return.

A sign of a good bar is when something goes wrong and then rectified with grace and aplomb. The first ale ( Beak brewery, Sussex) was wrong so had a Lancaster brewery Blonde. Three real ales plus a real cider. Jorvic and Madge shared a Sorbetto cocktail. Decided to have a snack, a cassoulet plus gujarati spiced chips. Very good, generous portions. Lovely decor. Very cosy. Absolutely stunning! My partner lives in Preston and this is my favourite date place. The decor, drinks, service are all phenomenal! The vibe is just something else…I love the feeling this place gives me. It’s an escape, a comfort spot with a very welcoming atmosphere. It’s completely unique which is increasingly hard to find! The GM is welcoming, friendly and very knowledgable. I’ve never been a Colada kinda guy but for some reason I was tempted to give the banana & pistachio colada a go as it was sold to me as an alcoholic McDonald’s milkshake 😆 it was incredible. 100% returning regularly

Plau is a lovely brunch place to go to. It has a nice rustic but cosy atmosphere and the staff are lovely. The food is delicious and the setting and presentation is very well done and do a high standard. The price reflects the service and experience so I would say the price is about right for the food. I recommend this place for a nice brunch with friends.

Been coming here for several years, the staff are always friendly. It's the one of the best places in Preston for craft ale lovers, with new ones on each week. Not the largest of places though there are some booths with comfy seats and outdoor seating at the front. Highly recommended venue !

One was a Glasshouse brewery 4.6% Pale Ale..a bit too floral for me. Also a 5% cinder toffee Porter from Docks brewery, very good. Good atmosphere on a busy evening.

Madge and Jorvic totally agree that this bar deserves to be a CAMRA Good Beer Guide entry. They even have every Guide from 1987 to 2024 for you to skim through. Great for my nostalgia. Especially the many lost breweries as well as pubs. (Real ale scene in 2020's has never been better despite those who passed.) A TV displays the choice. Seven handpumps. I had an Obsidian ( brewed in Bingley )....ps don't tell anyone its a Yorkshire beer poured in Lancashire! I always look forward to visiting the Vinyl Tap whenever I’m in Preston. They have an amazing selection of real ales and craft beers, and there’s always something new to try. A vinyl collection to sort through as if you were back in the 80s in one area. Speciality food here is hot dogs and everything coming out the kitchen looked fab. Found this little craft ale bar by the market totally by accident. Had a lovely pint of chocolate and Honeycomb stout. We chatted and had a very nice coversation the the young barman. I recently had a meal here, and for the most part, it was a great experience, though one element could have been handled better. The food was fantastic – each dish was well-prepared, with fresh ingredients and a lot of care in the flavors. It’s clear that the kitchen takes pride in their work, and it made the meal truly enjoyable. The atmosphere was also just right, with a nice view of the TV where I could watch the football match, adding to the relaxed, welcoming vibe. It was easy to settle in and enjoy the evening, with the ambiance feeling lively but not overwhelming.

Great hidden gem in preston, well worth visiting. Me and my friend love to watch motogp and this place is a very small minority of the establishments which are willing to satisfy our need to watch all qualifying, practice and race days. Cannot recomend this place enough. 10/10

Have eaten here quite a few times and usually the food is excellent but so disapointed this time. Had the chorizo burger it was cold and the burgers were cremated and just so dry i left a lot if it. In hindsight i should have sent it back but there did not seem to be any staff around and bybthe time any appeared the others had finished eating. Not sure if i will go back.

Extensive range of real ales, craft beers and more, at decent prices.
Didn't try the food but the menu looked good and there are vegan options.
There is also an auditorium with regular live music, tribute bands etc.

One of the best small venues in the north west. I’ve visited 3 times in recent months to watch bands here and the venue is great. Really good atmosphere every time I’ve been. We also stayed for the food which was fantastic, definitely restaurant quality. They also have a really good choice of drinks.

In side is nice although a little dark in entrance area.

My daughter and I booked in for a meal prior to watch Whatever (Oasis tribute band), in the Boatyard (see below, if you’ve not been before). This, we had also booked for.
The menu had changed since our last visit and we were now on the autumn version.
Being a cold night, I opted for the pie.
It was excellent; really hearty, without being too much, great pastry and well prepared accompaniments. I had a pint of excellent cask stout with my meal.
The whole place was busy, but we got attended to, and served promptly.
Later, my son also joined us and we all watched the band together in The Boatyard, which is separate, but all part of The Continental. It’s a superb band venue, but doesn’t impinge on the pub. (The band were good too)!

I made an order and made it pacifically clear that I wanted grilled chicken. I was told that this came with the meal as a standard. When I spoke to a member of staff I was told that it was a misunderstanding and it’s been made therefore I’ll need to pay for it. I’m pretty sure this is false advertisement and against trade-in standards and I will be reporting this and the member of staff. She was also extremely rude and walked off while I was talking. Service was poor. No wait at table but repeat long wait at bar. Repeatedly overlooked by whoever shouted "I'm first" fastest (they clearly knew!). Staff generally loitering somewhere at the end of the bar avoiding customers until someone with some nouce suggested they serve. Food and beer cheap and afaik can't be beat in Preston. But be aware app charges extra! Atmosphere was dead but ok as drinks and food for late session, but then they added dance tunes and disco lights, at which point we left.

On first entering the Moorbrook it looks like a tiny little old pub, with a great selection of ales. Then you walk outside and discover a huge outdoor seating area with ping pong table, pool table, huge pizza oven and loads of seats under cover. The pizzas are really tasty and we also tried the chilli loaded fries, tempura battered broccoli and onion rings. The onion rings were a bit heavy on the batter, and over cooked but everything else was delicious. I don’t think Slimming World would approve of their menu 😆 they have a great selection of Vegan options too

Argyle on tour! Up at 4am to catch a 6hr train journey to play Preston. This was the pub of choice for "we" regular pals from all over the country to meet. And a good choice too. Cracking atmosphere, home and away fans having good banter and having a pint....or two! Lots of good choices for real ale, cider and lager. I was drinking "memento" brewed in Reading apparently. Detailed review: We happened to be near Moor Park and the Preston CAMRA guidebook led us to this hidden gem. I am surprised not many people talk about this place as it's wood fired pizzas are so astoundingly good.
What greets you when you enter is a standard English pub with wooden decor. There are two rooms with strawberry thief wallpaper, simple furniture, multiple books & games, a few screens playing Sky sports and an impressive selection of beer on tap.
We were told that the beer garden is good but we were comfortable indoors.
We had a tough time deciding on the beer, cause there is quite a bit to choose from. I guess it's OK to make mistakes and discover new flavours.
The halloumi fries were simply fried halloumis which were understandably salty but were well balanced with the exceedingly sweet chilli dip. An extreme flavour battle.
We had the "Buffalo got beef" pizza.
Stunning!
The amalgamation of mozzarella, buffalo chicken, pastrami, chilli and blue cheese was extremely satisfying.
Refreshing and tantalising us for more.
The pizzas tasted best hot.
Gluttony is a sin and we indulged in it by devouring a portion of loaded fries, which stuffed us and gave us a salt-moreish overload.
The beef chilli loaded chips with guacamole, sour cream & salsa could be a meal in itself. Interesting flavours, but the pizza was the hands-down winner.
Possibly one of the best pizza in the city.
Highly recommended!

Making only my second visit to Preston town centre. Came for a footie game at Deepdale many years ago. Popped into this CAMRA 2024 entry pub close to the railway station. So close that they have a departure board for said station. Very good value food. Visited with Madge and Jorvic. Proper and large pub with covered outdoor area to the rear. Jorvic had a pint of Stanley's 3.8% pale from Kirkby Lonsdale brewery. One of five available on handpump. Very good. Lots of TV'S. A little bit shabby in places but Madge likes it. Absolutely fantastic local bar. Serving some of the best real ales ever made. They are now doing some absolutely amazing freshly made pizzas. They go down perfectly with you favourite tipple.
They have many other drinks that they serve also. Including lagers. Ciders and some fantastic wine. The wine menu is the best I have found around in a long while. Thry also have a fantastic range of spirits and if you dont fancy anything big to eat they also have some great bar snacks aswell.
The staff here are so friendly and cant do enough to make you feel welcome. Thry have a such a great knowledge of what they are selling and the local area. This is not one place you want to miss put on coming to. Weather you live in the area or not.
Also it is a dog friendly bar. And even your favourite companion can get themselves some nice treats here.

Niko’s has a welcoming vibe, you feel like your custom is always appreciated and never taken for granted. The staff are attentive and pleasant and i must compliment them on their work ethic, when they’re not serving drinks, they are making sure the bar area, tables and chairs are spotless, neatly arranged, and the glasses are clean and perfectly polished.
They have a great selection of Fine Wines, Craft Beers (which I’m working my way through) and even a range of bottled beers brewed by Trappist Monks which is rather strong 😂
The food is fantastic too, i consider myself to be a bit of an Pizza and Sunday Roast expert and theirs are second to none.
Its a great place to chill by yourself, go as a couple or with a group of friends, there are a few “Interesting” regular characters who frequent the bar, adding to the atmosphere, then theres the larger than life owner Niko making sure that everyone is ok and looked after.

Really enjoyed our beers (a fruit wheat beer and an IPA)
Unfortunately the meat and cheese platter was a bit tragic! We ordered it on a whim. Began to regret our decision when the Jacobs cream crackers came out first on a plate 😂 The meat looked like it had come straight out of a Sainsbury’s packet in its little rows, and there was a tiny spider on top for good measure. No gherkins or fun pickles or fruity chutneys or grapes, just pickled onions & caramelised onion chutney. No explanation of the cheeses but they were pretty basic.
Overall came to £36 which seemed exceedingly expensive for 1 and a 2/3 pints, plus a sad meat and cheese board. Never actually knew how much the board should have cost so were a bit shocked at the bill.
Would not return for charcuterie but might for a pint. The music was good and the guy serving was nice.

Amazing bar. Loved the variety of the beers. No keg pump clips which allowed to ask for actual recommendations rather than being swayed by art work or brewery names. Fantastic Brewery located just off Frairgate. Can be easily missed due to the side street location, so glad we found it though. They have a great selection of their own brewed ales also including several guest ales. The staff are friendly and the facilities are well maintained.
