The Monastery of San Lorenzo de El Escorial is a royal building from the 1500s that houses some of Spain's best masters in painting, sculpture and architecture. The complex is located in the Sierra de Guadarrama, 47 km from Madrid. It can be distinguished from its neighbor, El Escorial de Abajo, by its elevated location. The most interesting areas were the church, tombs and the library.
This palace and monastery dates back to the Charles V and Philip II monarchies. It is austere in comparison to other palaces of the period in keeping with Philip II's character. The monastery and chapel are at least 2X as large as the palace. There's very good explanations throughout and an excellent audio tour guide you can download to your phone for 3 Euros. Don't miss the royal crypts or the hall of battles.

Majestic! Must visit and take the ride from Madrid. You'll be amazed with the whole site and the wonders this place has. Felipe II had a vision abd surely was of grandeur. The Spanish royalty is buried here and their final resting site is impressive. Don't miss the library tour. Hire a guide, I recommend it 100%
Benny A — Google review
I feel lucky to be experiencing this magnificent palace of hundreds of years old, it is truly surreal. Ticket counter is at the opposite of the entrance, you have to purchase it before going to the palace entrance. Sunday after 3pm it is free entry.
Grace G — Google review
Immense site chock full of history and art. We did the 2ish-hr self-guided audio tablet tour, which allowed us to stay longer at some places and move more quickly through others. But realistically, we could have easily spent 3+ hours at this place. There is much to see! Our equipment worked fine but a little more explanation of how our "express tour" fit with the equipment would have been nice. Be aware that backpacks are not allowed and must be left in 1Euro pay lockers near the front. Photos are allowed in most areas. It's extremely impressive and a must-see.

El Escorial is an incredible architectural masterpiece blending a palace, monastery, basilica, library, and mausoleum, all making up what is the largest Renaissance building in the world! For decades its been recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. There’s so much to see so plan to spend several hours here!! The Royal Crypt is one of the coolest things I've ever seen. They dont allow pictures inside here unfortunately. It's a crazy feeling to be down there and see how the Kings and Queens and royal family members were laid to rest. The Library is also a breathtaking room featuring frescoes representing the seven liberal arts, definitely not to be missed! I'm so thankful to have had a very knowledgeable tour guide! I can't imagine trying to navigate the vast layout without one! El Escorial is so much more than a historic landmark. Whether you're drawn in by architecture, art, history, or spirituality, this site has something really amazing to offer. It's a great day trip to make from Madrid Spain!

A place full of beauty and history. It’s huge so you don’t feel overcrowded in there. It is very well maintained. I spend nearly 1h30 to finish visiting, definitely worth to visit!! The staff are very nice, we asked some questions to some of them and they’re equipped with knowledge and kindness. The town is precious as well, and only one hour away from Madrid.
Lu A — Google review
Great experience here, and was very peaceful. Not the loads of tourists/tour groups that you find in the royal palace of Madrid (that is still in use). Had a great time walking around the palace and gardens.
Kester L — Google review
Strongly recommend everyone go here at least once during their visit to Madrid. It’s about an hour out of the city but the “basilica del monasterio” has been one of the most jaw dropping places I’ve been in. It was one of the first places I went to when I arrived in Madrid and I have not been anywhere as beautiful

Nice and cosy, especially kids friendly. It is also a place to have a drink

Well as you may see it's just one Star... really I am not proud to be mean and give only one Star ⭐... But the truth is I like nature and I love gardens and l don't mind doing 100 km to visit one. This huge, very clever designed, Which contains many long different espies of old giant pine and other trees is neglected. I guess it was a remarkable garden one day, but not today...the visit list of instructions is in alert all things you need to visit the place are forbidden, no parking lot, no especial área for kids...no access for disabled person's cars. The museum is closed and there is no notice when it will open again... The garden is very big but the capacity is limited to very small number. It's a wide big place though 200 persons are allowed only. I hope that I visit it again soon, with my best wishing for the community.

Always great place to go for a walk and enjoy the nature this park offers you! Very peaceful and quiet place! Been coming here since I was a little boy and still, I'm loving it! Nearby there is a coffee shop which is nice to stop by and have a tapa or a coffee and some pastries.

Catholic church
The Basílica de El Escorial is a 16th-century royal monastery that offers a captivating journey through history and art. Visitors can explore the Basilica, Friars' Garden, Convalescent Gallery, and other points of interest along the route. The church's design features a Greek cross within a square, inspired by renowned structures like Michelangelo's St Peter's Basilica and Alessi's S Maria Assunta in Carignano.
If you are staying for more than a few days in Madrid, you cannot miss The Escorial Monastery. Ordered by the King Filipe II, this impressive building guards the remains of the Spanish royals, and some of the finnest european art. There are several guided tours that take you from Madrid city center to the Escorial, and you even can combine the tour with a visit to the Church of The Valle de los Caídos, the impressive Church carved in the mountain, at the time Franco ruled in Spain.
Ana M — Google review
The basilica alongside the library are the most beautiful parts of the Monasterio visit. The altar and the art used to paint and adorn the most significant parts of the basilica are beautifully intricate and very well painted. Please take your time to admire the architecture and the decorations.

This was a beautiful walk around the stunning Royal Site of San Lorenzo de El Escorial. This is a Royal Palace and Monastery and is simply magnificent inside and out. Photos are not permitted inside sadly. It consists of the monastery, basilica, an exqusite priceless library, royal tombs and palace. A simply sumptious place to visit and a WHS at that. Hard to do it justice with just an iphone camera.
David H — Google review
This is part of the Escorial complex, but there is no fee to visit the Basilica. Photography is not allowed in the Basilica so we respected the rules. A can't miss part of your visit to El Escorial.

(Translated by Google) The place is impressive and I highly recommend visiting it but it seems like a tremendously abusive price to pay €14 per person, so that on top of that not even a measly information brochure or QR code to obtain information during the visit is included in the price. You have to pay €3 more if you want to use the audio guide, which works with an app that you download yourself on your own mobile phone. It is incredible that we Spaniards have to pay the National Heritage (public body) this money to have access to the culture of Spain. I spent €56 on tickets since I visited with my family.

(Translated by Google) The monastery's basilica is truly impressive, a true gem within a gem. It's best to go inside and stay a while to admire everything, because the place is not only peaceful and tranquil, but also impressive and monumental. It's recommended to check out the free days, which are Wednesdays and Sundays, as they offer ample free hours, unlike other places where admission is limited to a maximum of two hours. Casita del Infante is a historic building constructed in the late 18th century as a private residence for the Infante Gabriel of Spain. Designed by architect Juan de Villanova, it served as a hideaway for the young royal to entertain guests. The guided tour offers access to Austrias Palace, Bourbon Palace, and Casita del Principe, starting at the northern facade. Visitors can enjoy great views of Escorial from here.
Lovely place to learn a little bit about spanish culture, architecture and Nature. Beautiful architectural piece!

Great views of Escorial are to be had from here. Nice building but no entry today (Weekday in February) and not sure if there is any? Beautiful gardens but again because of the time year everything is dormant. Still it is part of the WHS of Escorial and worth a visit. No tickets/nobody on the gate.

Spanning an impressive 497 hectares, this picturesque area is adorned with chestnut, ash, and oak trees, creating a serene environment perfect for leisurely strolls or invigorating hikes. We did enjoy at "El Bosque de la Herreria". Nice place for a family or friends picnic. Relaxing for a perfect Saturday or Sunday break and it's close to "Casita Del Principe park", for a small walk. Highly recommended.

Great views of El Escorial and part of La Sierra. There is a nature trail, with plant species indicated, plus a bit of history with Felipe II seat. It was an seat excavated in the stone from where he used to oversee the construction of his palace. There is a nice Bar at the top too!!

Nestled in the heart of history, Museo Cocheras del Rey is a captivating destination that takes you back to the 18th century when it served as a storage space for royal transportation. This museum showcases an impressive array of horse-drawn carriages, sleighs, and carts that were once used by Spanish royalty. Visitors can explore not only these magnificent vehicles but also the accompanying luggage and hunting equipment that would have been essential for royal journeys to their summer retreats.
Went for lunch. The food was great and the service even greater ! Price is very reasonable: House wine is 8 euros and very very delicious. The menu is a bargain for the quality of food you get and you have an entry to the museum included! Do not hesitate just go !

I enjoyed my visit to the insect park as always. I've been back at least 3 times with my children.

(Translated by Google) Even if we are in winter, being locked up for 45 minutes or even 1 hour with the heating is overwhelming, especially with a bus full of people where the air does not flow and it becomes a dense environment where it is difficult to breathe. People are already dressed warmly, and the heating hits your leg until it burns. In addition, the temperature changes from the heat of the bus compared to the street are fatal. Please don't turn on the heating, and if you do turn it on, don't let it make people feel hot. Ermita de la Virgen de Gracia is a beautiful Herreriano style hermitage located in a nature spot in Madrid. It features cubic shapes and straight lines with minimal decoration. The surroundings offer incredible views of the Escorial and the mountains of Madrid, making it an ideal place for families or solo outings. Visitors can enjoy picnic areas, cycling routes, and ample parking space.

(Translated by Google) We attended the rosary and Mass on Sunday during the Pilgrimage of Our Lady of Grace, and we found it a wonderful and highly recommended experience. There were so many people, especially from the town and the Peñas. And there was a sung Mass, I think especially by the Peña Zipi y Zape group, who sing wonderfully. I'm posting some photos of the occasion. The Hermitage of Our Lady of Grace is one of the most representative religious and heritage sites in San Lorenzo. Dedicated to the town's patron saint, it is not only a place of devotion but also a place steeped in history, tradition, and cultural value for the town's inhabitants. Its origins date back several centuries, when the local community decided to build a small shrine in honor of Our Lady, to whom special graces and favors were attributed. Over time, the hermitage has undergone extensions and renovations that have always respected its simple and welcoming character, maintaining the atmosphere of contemplation that so characterizes it. Architecturally, the chapel stands out for its sober style, with a humble and harmonious façade that reflects the popular spirit with which it was conceived. Inside, the undisputed centerpiece is the image of the Virgin of Grace, venerated with profound devotion by the residents of San Lorenzo. The carefully preserved statue occupies the center of the altar and becomes a point of reference both during liturgical celebrations and during the daily visits of the faithful who come to give thanks or ask for protection. The chapel comes to life especially during the patron saint's festivities, when the Virgin is the centerpiece of processions, floral offerings, and mass religious events that bring together not only the town's residents but also visitors and devotees from nearby towns. These celebrations constitute a moment of community unity, where tradition and faith are intertwined with local identity. In addition to its religious significance, the chapel is also a meeting place for the historical and cultural memory of San Lorenzo. Its presence recalls the importance that spirituality and community life have played in the construction of the town, becoming an enduring symbol of its roots. In short, the Hermitage of the Virgin of Grace is not merely a religious building: it is an emblem of faith, history, and tradition that continues to mark the life of San Lorenzo and its people, keeping alive the connection between past, present, and future.

Silla de Felipe II is a popular hiking spot with stepped platforms carved out of granite, providing stunning views of the Monastery of El Escorial. The trail starts at Bosque de la Herreria parking and takes about an hour to reach the top. It's relatively easy and offers the option to continue on different trails. The area also features other attractions like The Bear Cave and a little bar with picnic tables.
A beautiful part of nature with great trails all around it. We also walked to The Bear Cave. Convenient to park your car within a few steps of the Silla. We were there after 5pm on a Monday so it was not crowded. Two or three other families were there. I can imagine it would be jammed on the weekend. There is a park with more parking available down at the base of the hill but it’s quite a long, steep hike from there.

The trail is relatively easily, with the possibility to continue hiking a different trail after you reached the top. If you want to start at El Escorial, you can first walk the Bosque de la Herreria trail and then continue to the Silla de Felipe II trail.

It's worth visiting to get a great view of El Escorial. It's only a ten-minute drive from the monastery but there's no public transportation to the monument. It can get crowded but it's a quick visit so people are usually moving through it at a good pace. So, you should be able to get as many photos as you want.

(Translated by Google) It is a super super quiet place. It is difficult to get in as it is usually closed, but it is worth entering. It is a small, cozy place, right next to the university. There are many trees, some benches and a small pond. In summer it is great because it has a lot of shadows. It is full of grass and in spring and summer it is easy to see people lying on the grass. There are also usually people reading books because of how quiet it is. It has two entrances on opposite streets. One of them right in front of the entrance to the university. There is no fountain, nor anywhere to buy food or drink. It is very close to one of the entrances to the blacksmith shop; and the garden of the friars of the monastery of San Lorenzo de El Escorial. I especially recommend it if you are looking for a quiet, relaxed place where you can sit for a while and let time pass.

(Translated by Google) One of the best routes in the Escorial area, with very little slope, an approximate distance of 6 kilometers and a path of trees. It is a circular route that begins and ends on the same road. There is a small park to leave the car. At the beginning of the route there is a gate that is open and along the route there are several benches and trash cans. There is a challenge to look for animals hidden among the vegetation and if you find at least 7 of them at the Escorial tourist office they will give you a souvenir cup. It's very fun to do as a family. A spectacular pine forest with stunning views. People with dogs or families with children come here to enjoy a family day. Here you can breathe fresh air and stand on the different benches and be able to see Madrid in the distance. It's a simple and comfortable route for the whole family, with great views of the monastery, shaded by the pine forest, and benches and tables for resting. Halfway along the trail is the Virgin of the Camino. In winter and spring, there are two small streams. It's very flat and can be done on foot or by bike. Church
Space of remembrance
Cuelgamuros Valley is a monumental basilica and memorial dedicated to those who lost their lives in the Spanish Civil War. It features a towering cross and serves as the burial place of Franco's remains until 2019. The precinct covers over 3,360 acres and offers stunning historical and cathedral-style architecture. Visitors can experience awe-inspiring views, grand hallways with beautiful art, and a large dome chapel surrounded by gigantic statues deep within the mountain.
Went here for Sunday mass! Beautiful! Powerful! Super ornate and reverent! Unfortunately the cross at the top and some other places in Valle are closed unless you have special permission.

The church is beautiful and an amazing architecture. Apart from the cross on top of the mountain and the church inside the mountain, the surrounding landscape is also stunning.

Booked this through get your guide during a trip to Madrid last week. This place is beyond stunning to look at inside and out. We completed a guided tour and luckily we got in to see the inside before a lovely wedding was to take place. Definitely worth a visit and a decent tour guide to give you all the history info!!

An awe-inspiring monument and memorial to the fallen of the Spanish Civil War. The immense basilica, hewn into the mountainside, is stunning, both for sheer size and its Tolkienesque decor. Controversial though this place is, it is a great monument of Spain, unique in it's setting amongst the wooded Guadarrama mountains.

Valle de Cuelgamuros – A Profound and Majestic Visit! I visited Valle de Cuelgamuros today on a national holiday, and it was an experience I’ll never forget. Formerly known as Valle de los Caídos, the site has been renamed as part of Spain’s effort to reframe its historical legacy and promote democratic values. Tourists are welcome, but access to the basilica is restricted during the 11am mass, unless you choose to stay and attend. I did, and it added a deeply reflective tone to the visit. The basilica itself, carved into the mountain, is breathtaking. The scale, the silence, and the architecture are awe-inspiring. It’s not just a monument, it’s a place that leaves a lasting impression.
Romina L — Google review
Well worth a visit to this historically significant monument and basilica. Avoid 11am mass as entrance to basilica restricted for 45 minutes.

Absolutely speechless—our road trip from Madrid to Toledo and onward to the Valley of the Fallen was nothing short of awe-inspiring. The landscape alone was breathtaking, but stepping into the solemn emptiness outside, followed by the chilling serenity within the mountain-embedded church, left me utterly at a loss for words. Every element of this site is so unique, so profoundly moving. Truly, this is an unmissable experience that belongs on any traveler’s itinerary.
