Fine dining restaurant
Arzak is a long-standing, family-owned restaurant that has been serving modern Basque cuisine since 1897. The restaurant is known for its tasting menus and its dedication to experimenting with new culinary techniques. Juan Mari Arzak, the mastermind behind the restaurant, has been a pioneer in incorporating innovative methods such as quick-freezing ingredients in liquid nitrogen and vaporizing liquids into powders.
Chef Elena's dishes stood out. She's very humble and down to earth. The food was outstanding and the staff were very friendly. Overall amazing experience. Highly recommended
Roy F — Google review
One of the best meals I’ve ever had. The staff were also incredibly kind and nice. The head celebrity chef/ owner Elena Arzak came to our table 2x to say hello. Wonderful experience.
Mitch G — Google review
Managed to get a reservation here as a birthday treat and everything lived up to our expectations. Absolutely perfect food, service and presentation. Very knowledgeable sommelier (with a 100 page wine list!!) And the head chef Elena came to check on us and even prepared a birthday cake! Cannot recommend enough. Thank you to all the staff at Arzak for a wonderful evening and possibly the best meal I've ever eaten.
Jamie B — Google review
This place really lives up to the 3 Michelin Stars it received. The service was perfect - personal, friendly, and very prompt. Yet, not over bearing. Their attention to detail was next level. The food was beautifully plated and delicious. 10/10 recommend.
Derrick A — Google review
Maybe my expectations were too high - imagine a 3 michelin star restaurant in the city with the highest number of michelin stars per capita - my expectations were soaring. It was definitely a beautiful experience, and the dishes all held their own - particularly the saline fried egg was expertly done (their signature) and the pigeon was of amazing quality and cooked just right. The lobster with dill and cured tomatoes was perfectly poached and the flavors blended very well together. All the dishes were very pleasant, excellent wine list, especially the variety of spanish sparkling. Service was prompt and friendly, but nothing was very impressive to me at all - there wasn’t a moment where I had a bite and was surprised. The only thing I would say though, is that perhaps it is their way of cooking good produce in a true basque way, that the meal felt light even after 3 hours, which was impressive considering the quantity of food.
Keira H — Google review
Just plain wonderful. The food end to end was delicious. Unfortunately the one thing stuck in my head was the Hale Kokotxas; this was otherworldly and just sailed across my mouth leaving a trail of tastes as it went down. To top it all off, we were greeted by the chef (Elena Maria Arzak) and polished things off with a 1964 PX.
Amit K — Google review
Among one of the best 3 stars restaurants in Spain ( equally as good as Martin ). Arzak gave me a homie relaxing vibe with bold flavors dishes. The 2 most outstanding dishes were the lobster and the pigeon. They were so delicious and tender and all the flavors were so evenly balanced in the dishes. I wished I could order an extra pigeon(it was too good) ! I highly recommend anyone to reserve and have a pleasant dinner there ! 🍻
Jade P — Google review
We have enjoyed dining at many amazing restaurants around the world. Experiences and the delicious food are what we seek. When we planned a trip to Basque region of Spain, we were very excited to explore Arzak whose reputation is well known. Unfortunately, the food and the experience were not what we expected. The staff seemed happiest when interacting with themselves and barely conversed or interacted with the clients. Food appeared at our table, a brief explanation made, and as soon as our plates were cleaned, the dishes disappeared without comment or question. Watching the room, the other diners were receiving the same treatment. It felt like a machine on automatic. As for the food, it was obvious that the Chef is creative and talented. But the food just did not seem that amazing for the price we paid. The wines? They were fine, but it was interesting that most of them had Arzak’s label, causing us to wonder what was more important, the proper pairing or pushing their wine? Our experience was not worth the exorbitant price tag. We have had much better experiences for much less. We have been to many Michelin restaurants, and this was disappointing as we had looked forward to this experience for the whole trip.

Ganbara is a long-standing restaurant in San Sebastian, known for its small plates and mains served in a relaxed setting. The restaurant features a buzzing atmosphere with Iberian hams hanging from the walls and a small bar offering artfully decorated pintxos. These savory snacks, made from fish, foie, mushrooms, puff pastry, and griddled bread topped with anchovies or pickled chillis, are best enjoyed with the local wine, txakoli.
Absolutely incredible!! One of our favourite restaurants in San Sebastian. The food is truly outstanding and worth the queue. The assorted mushrooms with egg yolk were incredible. As were the red prawns, asparagus, croquettes and assortment of other delicious tapas/Pinxtos. Lively, fun restaurant with some bar/counter seating, good service and reasonable prices for the quality of the food!!
Katie H — Google review
We queued for about 15 minutes on a Wednesday lunchtime which was pretty good compared to what we had heard. It was so worth it though and once we were in we were quickly moved to some more comfortable and spacious seats at the bar. The specialty mushrooms with egg was amazing and the prawns were good was we were jealous of the couple next to us who were eating giant prawns - wish we had ordered those. The jamon was so melt in your mouth - it was a huge portion but I could have eaten it 10x over. Everything was outstanding and the staff were lovely. Because of the queueing it didn't feel as overcrowded as some of the other Pintxos bars either and we certainly weren't rushed.
Natalie M — Google review
We were in San Sebastian for 5 nights and ate here 3 times! We couldn't get enough of the wild mushrooms w/ egg. Everything was amazing but that dish was the item we had to keep coming back for. The staff was great too. It was the only Pintxo bar were everyone is seated. The seats turnover quickly but if you don't arrive before they open expect to have a 1/2 to 45min wait.
Liza O — Google review
Delicious food and friendly staff. Definitely overpriced and not worth waiting in the queue for. We waited for 40 minutes in the queue on a Wednesday night. The mushrooms were tasty and of great quality, but with the quantity, it was not worth €23. Let alone the red prawn, it was small and cost €33 EACH (right, not one dish, but EACH prawn). I’ve eaten many prawns in my life in various European countries. Regarding the quality and size of this one, it felt like a rip-off. Unfortunately we will not come back.
Vicky L — Google review
We arrived around 2:45 and waited in line until we managed to sneak in at 3:15, right before the close for the afternoon. It was totally worth the wait. We tried the mushrooms, croquette, monkfish/prawn, foie gras and anchovies. Although the mushrooms are what they seem to be known for online, my favs were the anchovies and foie gras toast. Everything was incredible though and I would absolutely dine here again
Marina A — Google review
Long line up but 100% worth the hype. We waited about 45 min. The man who stands outside and works the line is honestly the nicest human, very pleasant and chatty. The food was the highlight. Standout dishes for us were the razor clams, the mushrooms with egg. The dessert of fresh strawberries with black pepper was also incredible.
Justin G — Google review
Loved this tapas place! Was definitely my favourite one out of all the ones we went to during our week there. They had such a large menu and have something for everyone. I’m somewhat of a picky eater and I found their food to be delicious and wanted to try more! Efficient service despite the chaotic nature of a tapas bar and they are very attentive even with a full house! Was very impressed in every aspect.
Helen — Google review
The staff and the food were wonderful! Juan helped us with our choices with a big smile. The dishes were so delicious that we went two evenings in a row. Go, and definitely try the foie gras! Compliments to the chef 🙏🏻❤️

La Cuchara de San Telmo is a bustling and popular spot located near a Romanesque church. The atmosphere is lively, with a busy staff shouting orders across the room. Featured in the New York Times, it's a favorite among younger food enthusiasts. The must-try dish is the carrilleras de ternera, or veal cheek, served in red wine sauce.
Superb food and very, very friendly service with a smile. Only slight complaints would be a miscommunication when ordering - we were doing a Pinxtos crawl in the area and wanted to order small portions from the menu so we could continue on our crawl but we were given large portions. The waitress didn’t ask which size from the menu we would like, but we also didn’t communicate this so its. Ot completely her fault. The other thing was that the Beef Entrecôte came out bit tough but flavour was good. Fortunately for us, despite these small issues, the food overall was really, really good so it was a hugely satisfying way to end the crawl! The wine of choice from our waitress was also nicely chilled, fresh and complimented the meal perfectly! Definitely recommend this place ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Of all the pintxos places we have been to in our 3 trips to San Sebastián over the last 6 years, this place stands out the most for us. Most of the food are prepared very well, even those that are in other bar menus. This is the place to go for your Foie gras, Pulpo, Navajas. Their pig’s ears dish is worth going back for. They ran out of cochinillo when we had a late lunch yesterday. We’ll just have to go back!
Mary-Ann O — Google review
One the best meals we had in town. The execution of all the dishes was exceptional, and every ingredient was both treated with consummate skill and elevated by additional flavours. The presentation was also gorgeous, as it's clear from the photos. Unmissable, make sure you go for the piglet and the cheeks if you can only fit two items.
Pedro S — Google review
Our last meal in San Sebastian and we decided to go with this restaurant and it did not disappoint. Pulpo Gallego - after eating so many boiled octopus, was really nice to have a change for a grilled one. It was very well seasoned and smoky! €15 for the portion we had was a steal! Suckling pig - well prepared. Crispy skin and the meat was juicy. Seasoning was spot on too. Entrecotte steak - done medium and have a good smoky taste however I think they were too heavy on the salt so we had to scrape some off. Otherwise its quite nice Risotto - 9/10. Nothing to add. Please order this. Haha...
Peter T — Google review
I went for a Sunday lunch. There was already a line 15mins before opening. The space inside is small, but the service is fast and efficient. You make a line of sorts and order when it is your turn, give them your name, and they'll call you when your food is ready. You'll pickup at the bar counter. This works - if you stand near the bar counter (and not the entrance which is far, and you'll have to jostle your way through). Food wise, I ordered the octopus, suckling pig and foie gras. The octopus and foie gras and amazing. Get those. The suckling pig I would skip - imo the chinese-style suckling pig (not crackling pork belly) is better, the fat is rendered off and the skin is crisp and light. Here, the skin felt fatty and a but chewy. The meat was tender and cooked to perfection but I thought it was too "porky" (the smell). Wish i ordered the steak, that looked amazing. I would definitely return.
Y Y — Google review
Go for the cheeks! Both of the cheeks and split it up between beef cheeks and cod cheeks. The octopus is very tasty. Suckling pig is good and razor clams slightly sandy. Table service is fantastic - Jessica made great wine recommendations and was super nice.
A K — Google review
This is by far the best in town ! Super friendly staff. We arrived at 12:15pm and the restaurant filled up quickly at 12:35pm! Food is devine ( much better than the Michelin recommended pinchos we’ve tried another night). Everything is so good, but if I have to pick my top 3, it will be the risotto, blood sausage and suckling pig.
WY — Google review
Best restaurant in San Sebastián! Our favourite of the many tried. Shared their octopus which was cooked in bacon fat and their razor clams. Despite being already full it was obviously excellent technical cooking and fresh seafood. This was more expensive than other pintxos places we went to though, about eur 33 in total however the menu was more innovative.

Casa Urola is a charming restaurant and pintxos bar located in the Parte Vieja, offering a delightful dining experience. The restaurant's chef, Pablo Loureiro, is known for his exceptional seafood dishes such as wild turbot served buttery soft on a plate.
Outstanding food. The seasonal items were delightful. The tender green beans were vibrant and beyond our expectations. The scallop was honestly a life changing bite. Lobster pintxos was clear evidence why this place is so well acclaimed. Seasonal squid was also fresh and had a lovely bouncy texture. Service at the bar can take a little longer, so highly recommend booking if coming for a full meal. We managed to snag a table, but come at opening to secure a space. Must visit spot and lives up to its high ratings.
Tiffany C — Google review
I was really hoping the negative reviews would be inaccurate… however, we had dinner here (upstairs reservation) tonight, and it was pretty painful. We arrived promptly, but it became clear very quickly that service would be slow. It was maybe 10-15 minutes to get a food menu after being seated. Another 15 min to order food. Then another 10-15 min to get one piece of bread (and they were the end pieces) each. Eventually I decided to ask if all the food had been fired yet, to see if we could cancel some of the order and leave. She offered to bring everything all out at once, so we were served all the remainder dishes very soon after. If you plan to come here, be prepared to stay at least 2 hours, but probably 3 hours. The shrimp tartar was tasty. The rest of the food was average. We were wishing we just went to a pintxo bar instead, where we could get delicious food promptly. Maybe this is more of a “tourist trap”…? Wouldn’t recommend, although the lady was accommodating with speeding up the service eventually and was mostly kind.
Anna C — Google review
It must be hard to compete in the restaurant business in the Basque Country, where the standard of dining is exceptionally high. Over the past five days, every meal we had elsewhere was overwhelmingly positive — unfortunately, Casa Urola was the exception. To us as guests, the main issue appeared to be understaffing. Our waitress had little time to engage, responses took a long time, and the entire experience felt transactional rather than welcoming. A small but telling detail: the entire restaurant shared a single salt shaker and pepper grinder. At first, this felt like a quirky detail, but after watching staff and guests pass them from table to table throughout the meal, the novelty wore off and frustration set in. The food itself was generally fine, but at this price point, the service should be better. The salat was way too salty and the grilled foie gras, in particular, was disappointing — it tasted purely of fat, with none of the texture or balance one would expect. Having eaten foie gras many times before, this was a first. When we politely mentioned this, our comment was met not with understanding but with dismissal: the waitress replied that “everyone in the restaurant likes it,” making us feel foolish for even raising the point. A more professional or kind response would have gone a long way. Casa Urola was the only place in the Basque Country that felt even slightly like a tourist trap. Based on our experience, we cannot recommend it.
Captain K — Google review
The food and service are fine. The atmosphere is sort of old and not vibrant. We had shrimps, good fresh, properly cooked and seasoned. Hake cheeks in pil pil sauce (KOKOTXAS), delicious, be aware that it is very gelatinous. Finally Monkfish grilled. As desert we had some sort of French toast elevated. It was ok but not fantastic.
Ali A — Google review
Ate at the bar downstairs on a Sunday night. Queued briefly before opening and got in pretty easily. Service needs work, ordered A but received B. Clearly understaffed. No service with a smile here. Tried basically everything on the pinxto menu. Food is ok - the scallop dish that they were known for is good but not so exceptional as to warrant a return visit. The other dishes were ok. But i would definitely skip the steak, which was tough and bland.
Y Y — Google review
PRO'S: Casa Urola's food & atmosphere deserve the Michelin recognition, not so much the service. Our group of four ordered sixcexcellent dishes and two wines, but having to ask for water & olive oil multiple times did not impress. CON'S: The restaurant needed more than two aervors the night we dined. SUMMARY: Casa Urola has excellent food & wine worth a visit
Kyle ( — Google review
Food incredible! Get the scallop, cod casserole and tune bonito. Service horrendous and no rhyme or reason to the lining up. Staff looked unhappy. Loud but could still talk. Very cramped when eating at the bar. But it’s all part of the pinxto experience! Would still come back!

The signature scallop soup was very good! Recommend it for everyone. I had so many croqueta in Madrid, Barcelona, and Donostia, but one here was the most flavorful.

Bodegon Alejandro is a trendy, low-lit venue offering seasonal tasting menus featuring game or fish dishes paired with wine. The restaurant is the brainchild of Natalia and Jordi, who honed their skills in renowned establishments like El Cau del Pescador and Bodegon Alejandro in the Basque Country before bringing their expertise to Costa Brava.
The food was excellent, we had the spider crab and the Txuleta with fries, a green salad and peppers. Affordable for the quality. We went with the our two kids 9 and 10’and everyone loved it. The service was slow but it was busy and it seemed like maybe only one waiter was taking the orders but everyone was very friendly. The atmosphere is unique, being downstairs. I would dine here again.

We had the lunch tasting menu. Overall, food was quite good. I really enjoyed the crab dish that has the white foam on top, anchovy and the tuna fillet. French toast with cheese ice cream was pretty good too. The rest were honestly quite normal, nothing extraordinary but not shitty. Service was good too though! Would still recommend going! Gave a 3 for atmosphere mostly because it was quite stuffy, given its summer and aircon is not great in there.
Yvonne ( — Google review
This place is BY FAR my favorite restaurant the whole time here. Perhaps I had really high expectations of San Sebastian, but I find the three michelin Arzak a little underwhelming, and the popular pinxto bars too chaotic and unpleasant. This place is nestled in the basement and when we got to dinner, it was a nice mix of locals and tourists. The service was friendly (not a guarantee in this city) and the food omg the food. I had started to lose hope in the food in this city until I tasted the dishes here. They started with a refreshing gazpacho and beautiful wafers. The wafers were so thin and a little nutty, absolutely delicious. The bread here was stunny, crusty on the outside and moist on the inside - a definite must order as most of their dishes have sauces they are so good you just want to wipe it up with bread. We ordered ala carte and each dish just left us hungrier - that’s when you know a restaurant is good. They had baby mussels in season which was served in a homemade marinana sauce - what delicate and sweet mussels, and the sauce was earthy and satisfying. The spider crab with pil pil foam was equally outstanding - chunks of marinated hot crab meat which blends well with the aromatic garlic flavor of the foam. Heaven. The squid in its own sauce was another winner - perfectly cooked squid in umami black ink sauce. My favorite dish of the night was the local ceps mushrooms with runny egg. The mushrooms were so aromatic and exploding with flavors from being cooked in spanish sherry and pepper, such a delightful dish. They serve a good selection of spanish wines by the glass and dessert was equally outstanding. The pistachio souffle blew me away, rich pistachio cream amidst a light souffle and the figs with cream was very good as well. Definitely will be back whenever here.

Visited first thing when they opened, we did not have reservation as it was a last minute plan to try this out. Good thing they had available seats for us. Though I suspect because latter November is off season. Otherwise suggest to make reservation ahead. Staff were very friendly and nice, thanks to Cindy who made the whole experience for me and my dad last lunch in san sebastian a wonderful experience. they also gave really good recommendation on the food and wine pairing since we ordered Ala carte. Everything about the food's taste, quality, portion, pace of service, and how they ensure it was ok for sharing for me and my dad were perfect for us both. They had really good txakoli and rioja wine selection, ysios specifically. Definitely coming back next year again and try the other dish. Cannot wait

Walked in around 230pm and had a tasting menu by myself. Saw it was a Michelin 2025 restaurant, my expectations were high, but it turned out was just a 4 star experience. Perhaps it's because of the time closer to their 3pm closing time. However, people were still dining beyond 4pm, which was nice for the accommodation. No wow moment but everything was delectable. The only thing stands out was actually the bread which has a good crust and very flavorful. A few dishes were too salty for my liking. The desserts were my least appreciated. Not sure why they were granted Michelin 🤔

I had an unforgettable experience at Bodega Alejandro. From the moment I walked in, the warmth of the staff set the tone for the evening—they were genuinely accommodating with pescatarian substitutions, making the entire tasting menu feel tailored without missing a beat. Every course was a thoughtful balance of tradition and creativity. The leek royale with mushroom consommé was delicate and earthy, a perfect opening. The marinated anchovy with peppers captured the essence of Donostia in one bite, while the spider crab with pil-pil foam was rich and decadent without being heavy. The slow-cooked egg with Idiazabal consommé was comfort and elegance in a single spoonful. The fish dishes were absolute standouts—the grilled tuna with spring onion and piquillo peppers and the grilled hake were both cooked with precision and carried the kind of flavor that only comes from respect for the ingredient itself. Dessert was no afterthought either: the seasonal fruit with mascarpone cream refreshed the palate, while the caramelised French toast with ice cream was indulgence at its finest—golden, crisp, and impossible not to finish. The service matched the food—attentive without ever being intrusive, and genuinely invested in making sure every guest felt welcome. Bodega Alejandro isn’t just a place to eat; it’s a place to experience San Sebastián’s culinary soul. If you’re looking for a meal that’s equal parts comforting and extraordinary, this is it.

Food excellent. Opted to skip tasting menu and get full kg of Monkfish, with spicy peppers and grilled octopus appetizers. Was delicious. French toast dessert incredible. Not the coziest dining room, kinda strange design and music but once it filled up the atmosphere was better. Would defo go back for food

Bar Txepetxa is a long-standing tavern known for its convivial atmosphere and delicious anchovy snacks and sandwiches. The small, cheap pintxos offer a variety of flavors, from savory options like vinegary giardiniera and tapenade to sweeter combinations such as foie gras with apple compote and blueberry jam. Despite its unassuming appearance, the bar has attracted foodies and celebrities alike, with photos on the wall showcasing famous visitors.
I still dream of the blueberry anchovy pintxos! Who would have thought this combo would work WOW!! This is a pintxos bar that specialises in anchovy so if you love anchovies this is the spot for you!! We got 5 to share as it was still way before 12pm and I don’t usually eat breakfast. Each was delicious in its own way. We started with salted anchovy just to try on its own and it was goooood. Then we worked our way down the menu and got peppers with onions, sea urchin cream, blueberry and then salmon. Highly recommend visiting here for a snack or a full meal. The beers are great and service was friendly too!

Perfect perfect perfect!!!! For an anchovy lover this is heaven on earth. Every bite is a delight. I recommend the blueberry one! The one with pepper and onion. Lastly don’t miss the hot tapa with cod - it was divine as well.

Anchovy heaven. If you love anchoas/ boquerones you will love this place. My favourite was the one with blueberry! 🤪 crowded but just work your way to the front of bar. The bartenders are very quick. English menu provided just pick and choose and point at what you want.
C H — Google review
Very friendly servers and it’s probably one of the few pintxo bars where there’s a/c and you feel cool inside. Lovely decor and very very quick service! Although not much space, you can definitely find yourself a little space to eat and drink. It mainly serves anchovies dishes, instead of other seafood/meat. So if you don’t like anchovies, don’t come! It’s won a few awards I believe and very well deserved! My favourite is the crab meat with anchovy but if you don’t like the roe/seafood taste, opt for olives or peppers with anchovies. Food was just amazing! Go for Txakolí wine for the local experience 🥰😌
Sharon C — Google review
What an experience! It gets packed very fast and thus the ordering is very chaotic. The service men are friendly though and make sure you’ll get yours eventually. The taste is incredible! No wonder everyone wants a piece!

Loads of fun...but it's just anchovies with toppings. If you like anchovies, great! If you don't, I wouldn't go here. The bread is subpar, but such is Spain. (Unless we're talking about glass bread, which is incredible, but not served here. As a matter of fact, many things are not served here.) My wife and I both loved the calamari dearly. The joint is down-home, it's funky, and like the rest of San Sebastian, touristy to the core. The narrow menu is a gimmick, after all. But don't take my word for it: Ian McKellen ate here!
Jon L — Google review
Blueberries and anchovies sounds wrong but it works as the sweetness balances out the saltiness. It's probably the best one on the menu! The vinaigrette in the blueberry jam makes it moreish and you'll be asking for more. Coconut and anchovies was interesting but the coconut overpowered the anchovies slightly. The Norwegian salmon pairs well with the anchovy or you can have it on its own. You can't go wrong with any items on the menu as the anchovies are delicious and flavour combos are solid. Whether it's pate, tuna or peppers, it's down to your personal preference. Wash it down with a beer or txakoli and you have the perfect pintxos pairing. As one of the most popular pinxtos bars in the area, it is often busy but it adds to the atmosphere. Service is quick with an interesting tannoy system where they shout your order to the back kitchen. Staff are friendly and efficient. Pintxos are reasonable at €3 especially at this quality.
Jason K — Google review
3 eur for excellent pintzos. I tried option one with crab cream which was quite intense and option two with peppers and onion which was more balanced with the crunch and lightness from the vegetables. Perfectly seasoned, quick friendly service, highly recommend even if you’re not an anchovy fan.

Mirador de Ulía is a renowned restaurant perched on the hillside overlooking San Sebastian, offering stunning views of the city and coastline. With one Michelin star, this elegant family-run establishment showcases Chef Ruben Trincado's contemporary creations using the freshest seasonal ingredients, with a focus on seafood and local produce. The tasting menu features a harmonious blend of classic Basque flavors and modern culinary techniques, complemented by an extensive wine list.
Enjoyed the fantastic tasting menu. Sommelier recommended excellent wine to pair. City view is incredible.
Greg S — Google review
In short, don't bother. My review refers to the vegetarian tasting menu experience with wine pairing, which was €120 for food plus €95 for wine pairing. It was an utterly underwhelming experience from start to finish. Food: Really terrible. Every dish was bland, boring, and unimaginative. There were a couple of dishes we didn't even want to finish because they were almost hilariously bad; a small bowl of dry roasted quinoa and a plate of hot, wet salty lettuce were the worst offenders. A lot of what we were served was clearly slightly altered components of the meat/fish tasting menu, which is fine in theory, but when you take something out you need to put something back in, namely flavour. However, our friend who had the meat/fish tasting menu enjoyed all their food. Service: The staff were friendly, but it felt like we were being served by inexperienced teenagers doing their first holiday jobs. There was no attempt made to explain the meal we were eating of the wine we were being served. Atmosphere: The view is undeniable, but the atmosphere in the restaurant is so odd. The lights are bright white overhead spotlights which are turned up high all night. The restaurant does not feel at all luxurious or romantic. Drinks: The wine served was fine - good quality wines. There was no explanation of what we were drinking other than a quick glance at the bottle. The dessert wine was served in a champagne flute. The sparkling water is clearly carbonated on site and was unpleasantly flat. Mirador de Ulía should stop offering a vegetarian menu until they are prepared to put some effort into it.

Amazing view of San Sebastián. The meal didn’t quite match, but overall experience still makes it worth a visit if you’re looking for something memorable when dining about Basque country.

The view alone is enough to qualify this place as 5 stars. At dusk it's magical and then the sunset! The staff are equally amazing, friendly and knowledgeable. Tasting menu was perfection. Everything on the menu looked and tasted phenomenal. The flavours and combinations were so unique. Chef is a genius.

This place is on the Michelin recommend guide but I don’t know why. As a regular at Michelin restaurants around the world, we know what to expect but glad this place doesn’t make the grade ( in our opinion ). On a positive note, the place is stunning, with views to die for. The staff were great but not upto Michelin standards. Thou with a little more training they could be. The venue lacked an experience Sommelier, hence we had to determine which wine to pair with our various dishes as we opted not to do the wine pairing. One tip, offer a wine menus in English. Where improvements are need to bring it up to Michelin standard were; They failed to issue us with a tasting menu was presented to us, making it difficult to follow the dining experience as we had no reference to the journey. We also noticed that various staff had various degree of knowledge of the dishes. I think we should training they could improve that. The tasting menu itself was too fish heavy with only one plate offering a non fish main ingredient. The dishes were presented well, but nothing special. Each dish tasted similar to the next. The only non fish dish was duck, which thou above average was not consistent, what I mean is that some got a leg, others got a breast. Our party had two vegetarians and one vegan. The overall feedback was the dishes were presented well, but again lack imagination and many simply tasted the same. This place has so much potential if they take simply take a look at their menu and consider searching for a chef with the imagination the venue deserves. At the price point, their have some work to do. Overall we give this venue 3/5.

The most incredible experience - everything about it, from start to finish, was perfect. Amazing food, wonderful service, lovely atmosphere. The views from the restaurant were gorgeous and well worth the hike up the hill! Each dish was a treat for the senses. The standout was the cod and the Andrès beef. Our wait staff were so pleasant and attentive, we could not fault them at all. I hope we get the chance to visit again one day. Thank you so much for a dinner we will never forget!

Kokotxa Jatetxea is a charming restaurant located in the heart of San Sebastian's old town, offering adventurous Basque cuisine with a focus on seafood. The restaurant, named after one of the region's finest dishes, is led by chef Daniel Lopez and front-of-house Estela Velasco. Their modern take on Basque traditions incorporates the best market ingredients and subtle influences from other cultures such as Japan, India, and Turkey.
My wife and I came here for lunch while on vacation in San Sebastian. We had the market menu, which included several courses. I can say without reservation that this was the most satisfying meal I have ever eaten. The courses were varied, and each was delicious. My favorites were probably the tuna steak (not pictured), the Iberian pork shoulder, and the main dessert course (not pictured). The staff were both efficient and very knowledgeable and helpful. The atmosphere was also pleasant. I was expecting the food to be good, but I was not prepared for how much I would enjoy the overall experience. I hope that I can come back someday.

Absolutely wonderful! We came for lunch and had the Market menu without the wine option - although that looked really worthwhile! The somm seemed very hands-on. The staff was excellent and worked in their small space honestly like a ballet. I was pregnant at the time and they listened and substituted menu items with ease to accommodate me. The food was inventive and delicious. I highly recommend!

A Jigsaw Falling Perfectly into Place: An Unforgettable Lunch at Kokotxa Some meals are simply pleasant. Others are memorable. And then, on the rarest of occasions, a lunch comes along that feels like a masterpiece being assembled before your eyes, where every element from the setting, the service, the sequence of flavours, clicked into place. Our meal yesterday at Kokotxa in Donostia was precisely that: an exquisite experience and, without doubt, one of the nicest meals we have ever had. Perched just above the sands of La Concha bay, Kokotxa offers more than a view; it provides a prologue. The serene vista of the Cantabrian Sea sets the stage for a culinary journey that is deeply rooted in the Basque Country yet speaks a universally elegant language. It’s a Michelin-starred establishment that wears its accolade lightly, focusing not on pomp but on profound pleasure. From the moment we were welcomed, the service was impeccable, a flawless choreography of warmth and professionalism. The staff moved with an intuitive grace, without intrusion, and explaining each course with a genuine passion and knowledge, guiding us through the tasting menu, ensuring every detail was perfect. Lunch at Kokotxa is more than a meal; It’s the feeling of a complex and beautiful jigsaw puzzle falling into place (you can tell I love Radiohead) leaving you with a complete picture of great food and service. We loved it and would highly recommend a visit. Stephen & Bren Parkins-Knight 💝

An incredible meal for two. The waiter explained the menu thoroughly (in English), even suggesting when we had ordered too much and offering half portions. The fish was cooked impeccably, and the crab dish was a real favorite

Some of the dishes are exceptional - mushrooms ravioli and the lemon desert, but the rest were a bit bland. The service should be improved, too. Yes, I’m a bit more critical but it’s Michelin recommended .

Reservations needed on Saturday at the bar unless you’re having a quick tapas bite before 8pm. The bar was packed between 7-8.30pm. Nice buzz in the place. Staff tried really hard to find our group of 6 people a space. The pulpo was one of the best we’ve had in the week after having it in several small bars in Madrid and San Sebastián. Cheesecake had great runny texture. Paired nicely with the berry sorbet. Not quite the typical basque burnt cheesecake but a good dessert nonetheless.

enjoyed the Basque cheesecake here. Thin top crust, soft airy core, very sophisticatedly sweetened (not sweet at all) and pairs perfectly with the WONDERFUL raspberry sorbet served on the side (i loved the sorbet equally). Serving size good for 2 @ €10 Pleasant service Beautifully designed modern restaurant

Let me start with the most important: the food and wine here are excellent, we had a tasty and abundant lunch, served by some really nice people (kudos to the sommelier!). But the service in total was not to same level of the food and careful design of the interior. Partly no doubt, to our lack of skills in Spanish, but we love to know what we are eating, and the plates were served without a word. What could not be due to language was that we had to ask multiple times for water or a refill of oil. In the end the wonderful sommelier jumped in and took control - his English was excellent, which helped of course. But again, these are minor points, just to provide a way to improve! The food was gorgeous, the tuna belly heavenly soft, the beef ravioli with foie made us speachless. Then tender beef and two gorgeous deserts We xould not ask for more, and stumbled outside.

We went there for some pintxos, don’t be scared by the high price, the quality is there, as well as the very fast & professional service. The open kitchen is buzzing & is nice to watch. Food wise everything wa supe tasty & well presented. They seem to have a nice wine list, I would suggest them to present it to the guests instead of asking what type of wine they want. Very good experience overall!

10/10 if you are looking for something more upmarket. The food was super fresh and well cooked. I would highly recommend the tomato salad which had the nicest olive oil. The red bream was also one of the best dishes I’ve had.

Amazingly good, easily worthy of a Michelin star. Congratulations to the chef for the excellent pairing of ingredients. Nothing too whacky on the menu, but just the right level of creativity and thoughtful presentation. We had the 8 course tasting menu, with fish and meat mains being full sized portions (so much more than a “taste”). Wine list contained many delicious and reasonably priced Spanish wines. Staff were lovely too. Atmos gets 3 stars only because of the room layout which was restricted presumably due to the building’s age. All in all a fantastic experience, would highly recommend.

The restaurant offers an elegant setting with a large wine cellar and special menus for various occasions.
We did the tasting menu and loved every dish except one, which was cod in a pea puree. We both thought it was rather bland. However, the rest more than made to for it. The beef cheeks were tender and delicious. The dessert was one of the most delicious I've had.

Ode to Traditional Basque Cuisine Since the summer, I hadn’t been to Astelena, and once again we left amazed as usual. We started with the classic hake pie, a dish that takes me back to my childhood and is a must every time I go. Next, we had Hongos with egg yolk, which were very flavorful and had an excellently achieved texture. For the main course, we chose Txuleta with "traffic light" (peppers, French fries, and lettuce). Jokin, the head chef, told me he personally prepared it, as we usually have long and in-depth recipe conversations — and honestly, it was spectacular how he made it and how good it tasted. It'll be hard to find anything that compares. Finally, we finished with a torrija and a cheesecake, both of which were delicious. I’ll be back in the summer for the Txipirones Pelayo, which are out of this world the way they make them.

We were so fortunate to dine at the premiere restaurant in San Sebastian! The appetizers and service were absolutely incredible. The wine and entrees were astounding! I had the Venison and it is now clear that this is the best I have ever had. We also received a tour of the wine cellar which boggled my mind with the magnitude of the collection. An unforgettable experience! This restaurant has the best winery I have ever seen in any restaurant worldwide – truly breathtaking. The quality of the food is beyond amazing: the ravioli de morcilla was rich and perfectly balanced, the carpaccio was melt-in-your-mouth tender, and the txangurro (spider crab) was simply sublime. To finish, the apple tart paired with their typical dessert was absolutely spectacular. The wine list is nothing short of impressive, offering an incredible selection that perfectly complements the dishes. A must-visit for anyone looking for world-class cuisine and an extraordinary wine experience.

Fantastic place, sitting on the terrace under enormous trees, and they have one of Europes largest wine cellars and collection of wines. The food we were presented was fantastic, good flavors, nicely served, accompanied by amazing wine. It is however expensive compared to many of the restaurants and the sizes of dishes.

Absolutely delicious. The portions are incredibly generous for their size and the quality of the ingredients. Service was fantastic. The terrace is lovely. Recs - black pudding ravioli with truffle, baked crab, rice with clams.

Walked into Rekondo feeling underdressed — left feeling underwhelmed. The place is gorgeous and the service was spot-on, but the food? A plot twist we didn’t see coming. The prawn carpaccio had less flavor than plain ice, the grilled artichokes were so bad we actually sent them back (a first for us), and the much-hyped baked crab looked great in its shell… and tasted like nothing. For these prices, we expected fireworks — we got a fizzle.

Amelia by Paulo Airaudo is a renowned two-Michelin star restaurant situated in the picturesque La Concha Bay, at the heart of San Sebastian. Chef Airaudo showcases his culinary expertise through an innovative tasting menu that combines avant-garde New Basque cuisine with classical French techniques. The majority of the dishes feature fresh seafood sourced from the nearby sea, offering guests a true taste of the region.
Went to Amelia with my wife and high expectations because of the 2 Michelin stars, got seated by the bar with the Kitchen in front. Great atmosphere and vibe in the restaurant, Chef Paulo and his fresh team really live up to all expectations, and beyond expectations. Seasonal menu with Amelia pairing was so impressive from start to finish, not a second where we lost our attention; Japanese omakase Italian at it’s finest. Only the best products are used in every course, I have become a big fan of Paulo Airaudo. We were so impressed by how smooth everything runs in the restaurant, and by how flavorful and artistic all the courses were, Amazing to have experienced this wonderful evening, we will never forget this, that is for sure. Thank you Paulo and staff! Amazing work (We started with a cocktail at the Blind Pig, which is also a very nice addition to the experience, because we were an hour early.)

This experience was an exceptional opportunity. We were delighted in every aspect. The food was the finest expression of each ingredient, prepared to perfection and then plated to restore all faith and possibly to our soul. The staff is exceptional. We felt welcomed, and taken care of in every way. The level of professionalism and excellence was unmatched. We were mesmerized by the quiet perfection of the open kitchen, the artistry of the plating and service, as well as the wild creativity of the pairing both alcohol and non-alcoholic. Just fabulous.

Absolutely fantastic experience — our favourite meal in Spain after visiting several Michelin-starred restaurants. Everything from the service and setting to the pacing was flawless, but the food was the true highlight. Each dish was inventive, balanced, and beautifully presented, with the langoustine with champagne sauce standing out as one of the best bites of our entire trip. The decor was funky and eclectic, adding personality and warmth to the fine-dining experience. The wine pairing was our favourite overall — thoughtful and well-matched — though we would have appreciated a bit more explanation from the sommelier about each wine’s origin and the reasoning behind the pairings. A truly world-class restaurant, and in our view, very deserving of a third star.

This was probably the best meal of my life. Everything was perfect. But in addition to the meal being amazing, the staff were wonderful. They seemed to genuinely be interested in us having an incredible experience. I honestly felt like I was in an episode of The Bear! I will always remember this experience, because it was not just a meal, it was an experience.

I’ve been to Michelin star restaurants all over the world and it was my second time here. We were a table of 4 but our other friend couldn’t make it as he was admitted in the hospital with a bad flu so we amended the reservation to 3 a couple of days prior to the our dinner. I understand that they charge us for the 4th person which is completely fair but in exchange of that we couldn’t order alcohol for same amount. Their argument is that ingredients were sourced, but they can give us a voucher for future use. They mean to say if we come after 4/5 months they’ll use the same ingredients? This is a joke as they are moving to a new premise. One of the Austrian sympathised with us and she said it was wrong but couldn’t do anything. Spoke to some other people in the same industry and they said it’s overrated and the chef is arrogant as hell. I own two 5 star hotels, I do understand hospitality is tough and a thankless industry but we shouldn’t take our guests for granted. If there’s no guest how can one run the business. The young chefs were wonderful but the French lady who was serving us was so casual, we ask for a dessert wine post dinner and she gets us white wine. There were few such errors during the service. They took everyone’s Polaroid pictures post dinner but not ours since we pointed the errors. The food is good but if it’s this kind of attitude and service one shouldn’t go there. There are better places in San Sebastián and all around the world. Won’t go back to this place!

What an amazing and unforgettable experience! The food was of exceptional quality, and the service was absolutely perfect, every detail was spot on. The owner even came by personally to say hello, which made it feel extra special. The portions were incredibly generous too! I would recommend this place without hesitation.

The food is amazing, I enjoyed deserts. Wagyu comes with additional charge of 75 eur, which you are informed in advance. I would definitely recommend visiting the restaurant for the quality of the dishes. However, the hospitality didn’t quite meet my expectations. The team sometimes presents the courses in a robotic way, yelling at you because of the music (the playlist is great tbh) or you hear yelling at other people 😄 This creates slightly awkward atmosphere. When we tried to chat with other guests at the bar, they interrupted us to continue with courses which felt uncomfortable.
Xenia — Google review
Dining at Amelia was truly a once-in-a-lifetime experience. The food was exceptional – not only incredibly flavorful, but also made with rare, high-quality ingredients that truly stood out. Each dish was beautifully presented, with meticulous attention to detail, proving that creativity and taste can exist in perfect harmony. The service was equally outstanding – warm, professional, and perfectly paced, making us feel welcomed and relaxed from start to finish. We also loved the space itself – a modern, beautifully designed restaurant with a refined yet relaxed atmosphere. It felt elegant without being overly formal or stiff, which made the whole experience even more enjoyable. A unique culinary journey where aesthetics, flavor, and heartfelt hospitality come together. An experience we’ll carry with us for years to come.

Muka is a restaurant with a young and somewhat inexperienced service staff, but they are friendly and do their job well. The food is excellent, especially the chicken and pork skewer, strawberry dessert, and apple cider. The tasting menu of 10 dishes is well-priced at 56 Euros. The view from the bar overlooking the BBQ is great, and the atmosphere in the evening is not too crowded. The restaurant features an ingredient-forward menu with high-quality produce and a focus on olive oil.
In-cre-di-ble! Food was sublime, bread was delicious and monkfish was next level. Very friendly service who spoke amazing English/ French and Spanish. Great wine list too. Foodie paradise
Matthieu V — Google review
This was my third lunch at Muka in 4 years. I noticed that the portions have gotten smaller but the quality of the food is still good. Another puzzling aspect of price versus portion size was this : The white Tuna dish (maybe 150 grams) was 25 Euros compared to the White Tuna belly (1kg for 70 Euros - I got a 500 gram piece for 35 Euros) and this made no sense to me. So, the belly, a much superior piece of the fish, was a much better deal by portion size! The mussels that we ordered as a starter were also a rather small portion of rather small mussels. Prices might not have gone up, but the portions are certainly getting smaller. We had a nice bottle of white wine ... which was a bit warm, but an ice bucket helped.

Simple but tasty food with great ingredients. Good paring with regional wines. I was expecting more attention during the service, changing cutlery, poor water and more explanation of the dishes.

What a nice surprise! Recently there have been some negative reviews but once we walked by this place we decided to give it a try anyway and we were not disappointed at all. Yes, the portions might not be biggest but the food is really good, a light & modern interpretation of Basque cuisine. Also, the staff was very welcoming and friendly, nothing to complain about. We’re glad to have chosen Muka.

The food was excellent throughout, almost every dish was supremely flavorful. The service was great and helpful. Me and my partner were sitting at the chefs counter by the action for lunch and it was lovely, at 1pm we were some of the only people in the restaurant and got almost exclusive service. We got the wine pairing and it was okay, 4 glasses for an additional 28 euro each. The menu itself was great and was 65 per person. The desert was super good. Wonderful finish to the meal

Nice modern restaurant with ocean view - nicely composed tasting menu for incredible money (65EUR) - i would maybe left out summer truffle from potato salad (not much added value tastewise, effect is nice but maybe but wasting ;) tomato was tasting too strong compared with truffle but still perfect dish) - but from service to atmosphere - perfect - willing to return ❤️

Gandarias is a popular and traditional restaurant in San Sebastian, known for its seafood, steak, and small bites. The homey atmosphere features cookware and ham hocks hanging from the walls. Locals and tourists alike frequent this establishment for its delicious pintxos, including options like goat cheese and pistachios crostini, roasted red peppers with balsamic dressing, and fried guindilla peppers.
We had an amazing meal at Gandarias. It is essential to book as they are always full. The pintxos in the bar are also amazing and might make for a nice appetizer. We enjoyed the spider crab as well as the bread but the octopus was the best we have had anywhere in Spain. The main courses were also great, lamb and beef fillet . Service was fantastic, as was the wine list, also by the glass a great selection.

Definitely recommend reserving in advance, though we were lucky to be seated as walk-ins. The food was great, prices are on the higher side, but still reasonable for the quality. Don’t miss the jamón; it was possibly the best I’ve ever had! The suckling pig was flavorful, though the skin was a bit tough. The pintxos are also fantastic, especially the T-bone skewers!

So good we went back two nights in a row. Pintxos were the best. T-bone steak on a stick, crab stuffed pepper (the best) and so much more. Menu in French, English and Spanish.

I visited lunchtime at 12:15 one person. I choose entre is spider crub of tarutaru. Main dish is whole grill of turbot. Dessert is fondant chocolate and lemon sorbet. Every dish of course good, but turbot was especially delicious dish! Of course pinchoce I ate last night, that’s very good too. I recommend this restaurant.

Another excellent stop in San Sebastian. Traditional Basque, everything delicious and nearly zero tourists, this is a local spot. The crab salad with anchovies and tomatoes was really great. Anchovies are made in house and like eating butter. Service was great but no habla Englais, but super friendly and our Spanglish got us by just fine. Menu was English.

Really solid pick for txuleta and turbot! Service was excellent. We opted for their dine-in menu. The scallops were tasty and the turbot was cooked perfectly. Service very much steak house like. Just a heads up for dine-in they require you order at least one starter and a main course per person.

Borda Berri is a vibrant pintxos bar that offers an array of intense slow-cooked dishes infused with Basque and international flavors. The menu features delectable options such as the renowned "crunchy" pig's ear, pork rib kebab, cod tripe, veal cheeks, mushroom risotto, squid ink ravioli, and tender octopus. These dishes are served on small plates with perfectly seasoned sauces, garnishes, and flavorful local olive oils.
Best pintxos in town! Besides the pork ribs, get the cod neck/cheeks and the risotto! All simple dishes but done well. Bar is quite small and very popular so eating here might be a tad chaotic. But a great experience overall 😋🔥

Absolutely blown away — this place was incredible. I went right at opening time, and it was already full. The menu, the quality, the service, the value — everything was perfect. I couldn’t resist going back again in the evening, and the atmosphere was even more amazing. People were happily spilling out onto the street — the place was full of life. What surprised me most was that the same staff who were serving at full speed in the morning were still working just as energetically at night. Their dedication and consistency were truly impressive. This is the kind of restaurant I’d want to visit every single time. A true gem.

This was my first stop in San Sebastián and it did not disappoint. The restaurant was super crowded and service is crazy hectic. But everything we ordered was incredible. The cod pil pil, entrecôte, risotto. Went back to try the kebab pork ribs as they were sold out that evening and it was delicious as well. Definitely a place to stop by. It was less crowded when we went back for lunch.
Wyelin C — Google review
Authentic pinxtos bar, with an incredible atmosphere. The dishes were delicious, would recommend the Costilla de Cerdo. Always full to the point of splling into the street - wrestle your way to the bar, order and then find a place to eat. Many people grab a dish and opt to stand and eat in the street. Quite loud and intense inside but that somewhat adds to the experience. Drinks were great, try the local cider. We had several dishes and a drink each (2 people) and that came to around €25
Ben W — Google review
One of our favorite place to eat in San Sebastián, the pig ear was out of this world, and the “kebab” as well. The staff is not friendly at all and you feel like you are bothering them coming in, the cider and the food is thanks fully making up for it

La Viña is a casual cafe that has been a staple in San Sebastian since 1959. It's renowned for its small plates and the famous Basque burnt cheesecake, which originated here in the 1990s and has gained international fame. The cafe is also known for its regional wines. Situated on a street lined with some of the town's best pintxo bars, La Viña stands out as a must-visit spot.
La Viña is known for its lively and energetic atmosphere, attracting many travelers. This spot is indeed a must-try, particularly for its Basque burnt cheesecake. Here, of course, we enjoyed dishes other than cheesecake. The service was friendly and inviting and the seating was comfortable. We would definitely recommend stopping by.
Achino N — Google review
Cheesecake cheesecake and more cheesecake. The most famous place for cheesecake in the region. Is it the best one? You'd have to go to the other places that some locals say are also good or better, but it's certainly a fantastic cheesecake, and the best one I had. Basque style.
Marc B — Google review
The line is crazy but you should just get it and order quickly. Honestly, I expected more from this place but it was pretty mid, extremely overpacked and loud. The basque cheesecake we came for was €6,50 for the portion which they split into two slices for better taste I guess was really good (but we expected something much more delicious for the price and hype this place has). When you take it to go they just give prepacked box with cheesecake inside, maybe this affected somehow
Nargiza A — Google review
Great cheesecake! Place is packed pretty much every night we passed by it though you can share a table with other people. Easier to get seats if you’re not a big group.
Mikaela M — Google review
The line was pretty short on a Wednesday afternoon. We ordered their famous Basque cheesecake. It was absolutely delicious. It is lighter and creamier than I've ever had and less sweet. My only regret was getting only one slice per person!
C P — Google review
Incredible. We were only going to have the cheesecake as we heard this was the top place to go. But we couldn’t resist the other dishes too. The gentleman who served us was so friendly and always smiling. We had the meatball, stuffed mussels, plate of jamón and chorizo. Everything was exceptional.
Bav M — Google review
I came a little earlier so missed the big rush, but it was still busy. Good part is I didn’t have to wait in line, only a few minutes at the counter. After trying it I get what the hype is all about. Best description I give is that it was very flavorful, creamy, and the most delectable cheesecake I’ve had. I would say it was a cheesecake with a consistency and texture of flan. Compared to the amount of business they get it’s quite small inside so seating can be difficult. Going early, helped as I was able to secure a place to sit and enjoy my cheesecake.
Roya M — Google review

Cervecerías La Mejillonera is a lively brewery with a maritime atmosphere that offers an array of delectable dishes such as mussels, spicy potatoes, and draft beers. It's known for its bustling ambiance and popular mussel dishes like tigres in slightly spicy tomato sauce and al vapor. The bar is often crowded, adding to its authentic charm.
Great fish style tapas bar, with a very small menu but everything on it tastes incredible and the portions are huge for a very reasonable price - you have to try the mussels and their calamari sandwich! Also a very fast service :)
Torsten R — Google review
You get the vibe this is fast and furious pit stop, something like a kebab shop for seafood. Catering to people looking for a bit of seafood that isn’t fancy but does the job, while you’re drinking lots and throwing the shells in a tray under the bar. The mussels were a little overpowered by the overly fishy creamy sauce and the fried squid felt a little too fried (if that’s even a thing?). Anyway it was cheap and definitely cheerful.
Jit S — Google review
Reallyyyy good mussels, enjoyed the tigre sauce. Cute little shop, didn’t have to wait when going immediately at opening. Large tour groups showed up right after but they serve people pretty fast.
Pirashan R — Google review
This is the perfect place to start your San Sebastián food tour. Good service, plenty of space by the bar and more importantly , amazing mussels. My recommendation is to go for the “Tigres” served in a delicious tomato sauce. But if you have the time , go several times and try everything!
Alfonso A — Google review
Went eagerly as first customers at 11.30am and were not disappointed. Absolutely mouthwatering, fresh mussels served with different sauces. Tried the tomato one, which had a very light hint of spiciness, and one with just lemon juice. Fell in love with both. Also tried the calamari with pimientos, really nice and tender, couldn't get enough. Gotta say we might've skipped the potatoes if we could choose again, to save some tummy space for more seafood 🤣. We were served promptly, and though we had to eat our food standing, the quality of the food more than made up for this. Definitely, definitely coming again!
To Y — Google review
Excellent fried squid - best I’ve ever had as it was both tender, cooked, well seasoned yet not oily or salty. Excellent fresh mussels with onion however our onion had a bit of a bitter aftertaste. Paid eur 12.3 in total
Yiran — Google review
La Mejillonera is not about fancy presentation. It is about energy, speed and flavor. The menu is short, focused and legendary: mussels, patatas bravas and calamari are the stars here. The mussels come piled high with your choice of sauce (the “brava” and “vinagreta” are essential) and the patatas bravas are iconic — crispy, doused in their trademark orange sauce and addictive. The atmosphere is pure San Sebastián: crowded counters, napkins on the floor, waiters shouting orders and plates appearing in seconds. It is chaotic in the best possible way and part of the experience. Prices are very reasonable and you leave full and happy. Not the place for refinement but if you want a true taste of Donostia pintxo culture in its most authentic, noisy and delicious form, La Mejillonera is unmissable.

What a warm welcome at Zazpi! I made the reservation before travelling to Donostia mainly based on the recommendation in Guide Michelin. Bar Antonio is a laid-back restaurant and bar in the Gros neighborhood of San Sebastian, specializing in Basque cuisine. The establishment prioritizes the freshness of its pintxos, preparing dishes to order and using high-quality seasonal ingredients from trusted suppliers. The cozy spot offers a welcoming atmosphere for both locals and visitors. One of their standout dishes is the Tortilla, which is dense, savory with a touch of sweetness from onions and potatoes that give it extra body.
The best tortilla I had on my trip. I wish I could go back. The staff are very clearly used to managing large groups of tourists coming for their tortilla. They had a funny nonchalant way of serving everyone. We arrived after they had served the last tortilla. So we had to wait 30 minutes - the last group cycled out and other started to show up.
Derrick A — Google review
Antonio Restaurant is a true local gem and absolutely lives up to its reputation. Known for their famous tortilla, this spot draws a steady crowd every morning — and for good reason. They make multiple tortillas fresh each morning, and they’re only served from opening until noon, so plan accordingly. Yes, there’s almost always a line, but trust me — it’s 100% worth the wait. The tortillas come out piping hot, with that perfect soft yet slightly runny texture that makes them so delicious and satisfying. You can tell they’re made with care and experience. Even with the constant rush of people, the staff handles the busy mornings effortlessly — friendly, efficient, and clearly used to the crowd. If you’re in town, this is one of those must-visit breakfast spots that truly captures the local spirit. Just get there early, bring a little patience, and you’ll be rewarded with one of the best tortillas you’ll ever have.

Everything we ordered was just incredible! This was the best pinxo bar we went to throughout all our stay in San Sebastián, it was recommended by a local friend of mine. I would definitely recommend #1 ravioli de langostino #2 vieiras (scallops) and #3 the solomillo (tenderloin). The tortilla is only served from 9 am til noon, so we went again the next day. It was totally worth it.
Melany R — Google review
Place is an institution and packed like a can of sardines. If you can't handle the heat then don't come. They serve their famous tortilla and be aware the main menu is after 1230 afternoon. Guys are hustling behind the bar so be ready to order. As Arnold said. . . I'll be back! I'm back - 2 days later. My friend Manuel took care of us again. Delicious food and great wine..tataki, scallops, prawn ravioli, crispy oxtail. Stay alert n grab a table!
A K — Google review
An absolute must visit. Not just for its signature tortilla de patatas — a three-inch-thick omelette unlike any we’ve ever tried, with a lightly toasted crust and scrumptious layers of potato and caramelized onion, all held softly together by egg. And not just for what I think are its Michelin-worthy pintxos either — “Arzak-style” creations like scallops a la plancha with truffle purée, oxtail crisps, and the mind-blowingly good prawn ravioli in Martini sauce. But mostly, for the warm, lively atmosphere in this tiny Donostia bar even on a rainy evening — plates of tortilla flying off the counter, the cerveza tap flowing nonstop, and the two waiters casually chatting with guests from all over the world. Everyone squeezed in shoulder to shoulder, sharing some of the best food San Sebastián has to offer. If you ever find yourself in this corner of northern Spain, don’t miss Bar Antonio. Grab a seat at the bar, order as many pintxos as you can, and strike up a conversation with the fellow travelers next to you. This isn’t just a meal, this is one of those travel moments that stay with you.

Everything we ordered was good! The server was great - took your orders, was quick with the service, and even greeted and did small talk to most people. The buzz for this restaurant is well deserved.
Marc Y — Google review
Antonio Bar manages to be both traditional and inventive. The highlights were unforgettable: the ravioli de gambas with Martini sauce is a small masterpiece, delicate yet bursting with flavor, while the crujiente de rabo (oxtail) was rich, crispy, and deeply satisfying. Their tortilla is beautifully made, perfectly soft inside, and the best I tasted in Donostia. Not everything hit the same heights and I must say the scallops and the pistachio cheesecake were very good but not as delicious as the rest. Service is friendly and efficient and the atmosphere lively without being overwhelming. If you’re pintxo-hopping in San Sebastián, Antonio Bar is a must-stop on the route.

The restaurant boasts a contemporary rustic-chic space with a unique blend of Basque and Scandinavian design elements. The menu features creatively updated signature cuisine based on high-quality ingredients, prepared over fire to enhance flavors.
Absolutely excellent experience at eMe Be Garrote. We had the tasting menu with wine pairing and it was all amazing. Service was perfect. They accommodated one of the people in the group that would not eat meat. Really enjoyed our time. Can’t wait to come back for more.

Attentive service, sensational food flavour combination and good wine pairing! Accommodating to a dish change on the tasting menu, unfortunately the wine was not paired to the new dish... stick to the tasting menu formula for the best experience! (One little additional feedback would be to perhaps to check if the oil has been oxidised before deep frying... this was not picked up by my dining companion so I suppose it is only applicable for those who are sensitive to oxidation.)

Amazing experience! Great food at the tasting menu and extremely professional staff. Every thing ve've tasted was super tasty, but the most spectacular and surprising thing we've tasted was the desert with lemon ice cream.

The restaurant is up a hill about a 12 euro cab ride from Playa La Concha. We arrived at 9pm on a Saturday and the atmosphere was slightly funereal: there were only a few tables occupied, and no music playing, and waiters dressed in black stood facing the tables. It was a shame, as the interior was otherwise smart, airy and full of character, thanks to the giant cider barrels. They had an à la carte menu as well as a tasting menu and the food was all very good. My only complaint was that the t-bone steak (cooked beautifully rare to medium rare) was served with mash and nothing else (how about something green guys?) The wine list had an excellent range of prices and we chose a rioja at 35 euros. Overall the bill was 148 euros for two, before service.

This is our second visit to this exceptional restaurant. This time they perfected their previous tasting menu. Everything we had was superb. If I must single out a specific thing, it was the beef tartar. It was the menu highlight in my opinion. I absolutely do not understand/support people’s comments with regards to service, which was flawless. Martín Berasategui’s passion for food comes through not only via food but also via restaurant’s great interior. Highly recommend.

Very good food prepared with care. Excellent service, attentive but not imposing. Great room with cosy decoration, no music. Harmonious flavors

Great example of extraordinary Basque Cuisine! Everything is well done. The tartar beef is perfect and the low temperature cooked yellow made with precision.

Restaurante Zelai Txiki offers a modern twist on traditional dishes, set in a picturesque location overlooking San Sebastian. The restaurant prides itself on self-sufficiency, sourcing vegetables from its own garden and crafting homemade charcuterie. With a focus on local produce, the menu features creative touches such as tomato ice cream paired with squid and spherified citrus juices enhancing the flavors of lobster.
On a quiet residential district, up on a hill. Quaint place but pretty good food! Compared to our previous night of 3* Michelin, this one is actually even better. My husband’s order of suckling pig is generous and really yummy. Overall a great satisfying meal.

Enjoyed a lovely lunch on the terrace of this stylish hillside restaurant with a Michelin Green Star and a Repsol sun. The quality of all the food was excellent and the portion sizes were generous. Ordered the fish soup and croquettes and received a mushroom starter on the house. Particularly impressed with the delicate green salad that we ordered to accompany our mains. The service was very good as well. No problem with packing in the restaurant car park.

Lovely restaurant and good food. Had so many great meals in San Sebastian which is why this didn't stand out for me. I had the Tuna taco which did not come with a taco but rather in a lovely bowl with a broth/sauce. Nice but lacked flavour

Fine dining at its best. A good varied menu. Lobster, prawns, wild pigeon, suckling pig all cooked and presented with passion.

visited due to the green Michelin star. the four of us spent ~300€ on food and drinks had various starters, mains and dessert. the restaurant uses good quality ingredients, but the execution is mediocre at best problems: - one starter was the grilled octopus, the tentacles were full of sand. - the foie gras was OK, but it was nothing special, supermarket bought delivers the same experience; the dressing was tasting better, but that's not what one would order that dish for. - hake was fresh and good quality the dish itself was absolutely basic, swimming in the green sauce, aka fat, and it didnt have much of a taste. - the spider crab is not worth it at all, stew/lasagna like dish tasting a bit lke crab - pigeon: the well done version was actually really good, although it was "rose". the regular one was basically blue. - desserts: we had to order the french toast in advance. despite that, it was not properly prepared, it was way too wet, and the "curd"/ crust was way too sweet - service: we got the bread refilled all the time, and the dishes were served at the same time, also warm, but basically that's it, so delivered the absolute minimum one would expect. at this price range this restaurant simply cannot provide the experience one would expect, hence would not recommended. better tasting food costing half or 2/3 of the price tastes much better in the city. the ingredients were actually good, but it would be time this restaurant learns how to use them.
David P — Google review
Food was fine, but the second we sat down someone walked immediately up to ask what we wanted to order. We had just the menus in hand. Not even 5 minutes after, they asked again Then for the whole evening they were pushing us to order faster for everything. At the entrees, asking if we already decided what we wanted for dessert. They asked us this 4 times before we even had our main course! Pushing and telling us that they were closing the kitchen. This was around 22:00, in the menu it says clearly that the kitchen is open past 00:00. Before even ordering dessert, they asked us if they could already order a taxi for us. Felt very unwanted here. Hospitality level is the lowest as can be. Not your moneys worth!! Also they have a weird obsession with sorbet ice cream, it’s with every entree

We visited these restaurants because of the green star. A restaurant with a beautiful terrace and a view, plus bread with a wonderfully crispy crust, but the quality of the dishes is simply too ordinary, without proper seasoning, without depth of flavor. We poured wine and water ourselves, so the service didn't help either. We were a bit surprised by this lack of good taste, because from the outside it looked like a professional kitchen. Maybe it was a bad day and someone forgot to try the dishes served, but this is not a place I can recommend.
Iwona N — Google review
The food was pretty underwhelming for a Michelin star restaurant, and given the price. We had far better tasting food at other restaurants/Pintxo bars during our stay in San Sebastian. Service was pretty poor for a Michelin star restaurant with dishes plonked on the table with no explanation of what we were being served. Staff spent ~15 minutes of our meal with ladders out right next to us, shouting to each other, to adjust the lighting to accommodate the desires of the table next to us which rather ruined the ambiance of the meal. And the bill took about 30 minutes to arrive at the end of the meal.

The cozy wood-lined tavern provides a warm ambiance for patrons to enjoy local beer and delicious dishes. It stands out among the city's social scene for its distinct selection of drinks, making it a must-visit spot. Whether you're sipping an aperitif at the bar or embarking on a gastronomic journey, Geralds Bar promises an enjoyable time.
Walked in and was fortunate to get a seat at the bar. Seems to be a popular restaurant and I can see why now. The Tartare was delicious as was the smoker tuna with a tasty ratatouille to complement the flavour. Nice bread, solid wine pours. Staff were friendly and spoke perfect English. Most definitely recommend heading to the area to try this place.

This bar has real class, with a cozy atmosphere that feels almost like a French bistro. The food was amazing — fresh, well-prepared, and full of flavor. We arrived late and some items from the short menu were already sold out, but the staff offered us excellent alternatives that didn’t disappoint. A great experience overall! The dishes we had are listed on the receipt

Brilliant service, it was faultless and the staff have a friendly and upbeat nature about them. We ordered the tuna belly, steak tartare, pumpkin salad and the rabbit tagliatelle - each dish was so good. Delicate flavours and so well balanced. The pumpkin salad is a real under dog here - it dosent look the most impressive thing on the plate but my god, the flavours!!! Loved the atmosphere with the vinyls playing also - 10/10 would recommend.

Loved this place so much! If I lived close by I'd be there every week! Menu changes daily. Place is cozy/welcoming & Servers were all great but it was such a relief to get simple properly executed food & actually feel satisfied by the end of the meal. It's real rustic food not a "food experience" forcing you to grab a burrito/burger afterwards lol. Nothing wrong with food experiences but with reviews/internet nowadays everyone is so focused on photos & foofoola that it's hard to get something that hits the spot & actually tastes good in the end. -Grilled Eggplant: perfectly grilled with a delightful rich, aromatic romesco sauce & dried cranberries for sweetness & chew. -Whole Roasted Poussin (lil' chicken not gamey): very juicy, nice color/caramelization on the skin, rich sauce made with lardons to die for, over a bed of roasted leeks. Serves at least 2 people. I miss you <3. Left my heart at Gerald's Bar! *Went 8/10, I forgot to upload notes/photos while on vacation

Special family meal out. Service exceptional. Great food. Short menu served tapas style. We had grilled melon with pickled cucumber and pistachio, grilled tomato and green bean on a romescu sauce, duck breast with aubergine and onion and a roasted pouisson on a bed of grilled green peppers. For desert we had a hazelnut blueberry frangipane tart. The negroni was perfection as was the carafe of Rioja my brother had. Really good coffee too!

This has been one of our go to dining spots in San Sebastian. Our last visit disappointing. We opted for the quail and the fish specials. The should have mentioned that the fish was whole bone in sardines. We noticed that others got larger whole fish. The quail was ok but overcooked. We'll give it another try. Maybe just a bad day.

Bar
Bar Nestor is a cozy and intimate bar located in the Old City of San Sebastian. It's famous for serving only four items: chuleton or steak chops, fresh tomato salad, blistered padron peppers, and their renowned tortilla Espanola. The bar is small and getting a spot requires patience and strategy as they have limited seating.
It’s definitely worth queuing for. We queued from around 10.20am for the 11.30am tortilla window and to book for steak. We were fourth in the queue and had a table for 12.45pm. It gets quite busy! The tortilla was absolutely incredible. Easily the best I’ve ever had. We also went for the steak, tomatoes and peppers of course. Everything was so flavoursome and juicy. It’s tiny inside and very quaint. You all sit together so it’s very social. I’d highly recommend visiting, definitely worth the wait.
Bav M — Google review
There are plenty of places serving Txuleton in San Sebastián. But none is better than Bar Nestor in my opinion. The simplicity of what they do shows the confidence in the product. Get in the queue early before opening if you want the tortilla. Or if you want to eat here at all to be fair! The tiny restaurant is fully reserved well before the shutter raises to let people in. The tortilla is superb but the reason to come is the beef. You’re given the choice of two steaks. One rib, the other sirloin. They serve 2 and are around a kilo. Once ordered, it’s weighed and cooked. Whilst you wait, a simple salad of tomatoes with olive oil and salt as well as padron peppers are brought to you. And then the meat arrives. This is quite simply the best steak I have ever tasted anywhere in the world. It is sublime. An incredible depth of flavour with the perfect cuisson of caramelisation. There is a very very good wine list with some of the best Riojas and wines from ribero on there. They’re incredibly well priced. Having been here 4 times, I will always be a devotee of this absolute highlight of any food trip to San Sebastián

More of an experience than just a meal. We got in line at 5:30 p.m., with the doors opening at 6:30 p.m. We were fortunate enough to secure a spot at a table for later that night at 9:15 p.m. We could have eaten earlier, but we'd have had to stand at the bar. We weren't early enough in the queue to secure some of the famous tortilla. While in the queue, you overhear snippets of conversation: nervous excitement, "Have we gotten here early enough?" "Will there be any tortilla left?" "Can steak really be worth queuing this much?!" When you arrive at your allocated time to worship at this temple to beef, you're first greeted by a golden light spilling onto the street, a heavenly aroma of roasting meat, and the clatter and buzz of a busy restaurant. The waiting staff are busy delivering sizzling platters of meat, juicy tomatoes, and glistening padron peppers, but you're greeted with a smile and a nod—you are one of the lucky few. There is no menu. You either say yes or no. But who would say no? The only choice you have is which of the two steaks you're offered is the one for you. The steak is a Txuleta (pronounced chuleta), the cut of beef for the region. It's a bone-in sirloin steak of epic proportions—easily enough for two. You don't wait long before the food starts arriving. First, the tomatoes with olive oil, then a plate of padron peppers, piping hot and delicious. Finally, the steak arrives, cooked fast and hot on a cast iron plate, spitting droplets of fat to forewarn of its arrival. It's presented sliced with the bone, seasoned liberally with sea salt, showing off its rare-ness for all to see. If rare steak isn't your thing, don't worry—you can spread the steak out on the iron plate, and the considerable residual heat will soon finish cooking the meat. But for us, it was perfectly cooked and delicious. In a world where expensive food can be overthought and too complex, this is food stripped back to its basic principles: the best ingredients, cooked well. Simple, but not lesser for that simplicity. As you eat, people come and go—the unfortunate ones who get turned away, the unprepared who didn't queue but get pulled in off the street by Bar Nestor's beefy gravitational pull. The whole process, from the nervous queue to the last morsel, combines to satisfy both soul and stomach. Go and worship the beef—you won’t regret it.

Definitely worth queuing! Best steak so far. And yes, the staff should explain the house rules, they’re not rude if you just walk in hoping to be seated. The only disadvantage is that they don’t have desserts 😁

Luckiest ever to get counter seats by walking in 10 mins before they opened for lunch. Fantastic food - the tomatoes and steak will be a forever memory. Service was friendly and attentive (was given a stool to kneel on because I was too short for the bar 🥺)

Our best experience in San Sebastián. We started queuing from 10.40am and were second in the queue, we booked the tortilla and steak, and then went back at 12.45am for it. The food was incredible and the whole setting was very sociable. Even the side dishes - tomato salad and padron peppers - were a highlight of our trip. A must do experience!
Janey S — Google review
Lined up at 11:10am and there was already a queue. Hatch opens 11:30am. You put your name down and order, there’s only 2 things - steak with tomatoes and padron peppers and pinxto size tortilla. We were told to come back at 12:45pm. Lively atmosphere and not too chaotic. We ordered all the food options and had 3 glasses of txocholi which came to about £75 for 2 people. Steak was rare when it came out on the sizzling plate, which we proceeded to “cook” ourselves to make it more medium!
Karhlia S — Google review
Incredible experience. The food really does justify the wait. In peak season, for the 12 o'clock serving, arrive at 11 to get your name on the list. Be prepared to queue. The tortilla only has 16 portions but it's worth it. Again for the 7pm serving, arrive at 6 and take a drink from the bar opposite (makes the wait easier) Don't miss out on the steak either! Cooked to perfection 👌 The staff couldn't be more friendly, this place really does live up to the hype

Bodega Donostiarra Gros is a charming spot with a rustic ambiance that serves up traditional Basque pintxos, sandwiches, brochettes, and rice dishes. Established in 1928, this bodega is renowned for its delectable tortillas and ensalada de morros. The show-stopping pintxos steal the spotlight here, but the menu also features hearty options like callos y morros and black pudding with rice.
Good food with reasonable price compared to the old town. A bit slow with the food orders. We were seated outside, a bit windy could have had more heater. Great service although there was just 1 person who took care of the guests outside, he was superb! OBS! Unfortunately, I am compelled to leave a negative review for this restaurant - which I was excited and eager to try. The food is really quite good and we did enjoy the menu. That said, the service here, at least with our waitress, was the worst I have experienced in a long time across many cities and countries. That’s especially unfortunate in a city renowned for its excellent restaurant scene. Our waitress was rude and unhelpful, and never cleaned our table throughout the dinner, which covered numerous rounds of pintxos and drinks. See photos! Further, her behavior was dismissive and rude every time we ordered. The place isn’t cheap, and with better service this would be fair. But when going to a good restaurant you expect at least a basic level of respect. It should also be noted that this restaurant prioritizes turning over tables quickly - which is fine, but the style of dining would ideally demand a slow and unrushed experience. Something to be aware of. Overall, great food, truly and remarkably bad service. Too bad.

La Espiga is a lively and chic cafe-bar adorned with murals, offering Spanish snacks, larger plates, beers, and local wines. It's renowned for its "delicia" pintxo, which consists of hard-boiled egg, salt-cured anchovy, onion and garlic mixture on bread with Worcestershire sauce. This historic bar has been serving patrons since 1928 and is currently managed by the fourth generation of the founding family.
Stopped here on the off-chance we might be able to get a snack and we were in luck. It was late lunchtime and the place was packed with locals. We found a couple of seats towards the back and enjoyed a couple of drinks, pintxos and cheesecake. The cheesecake was the best we tasted on our trip to Bilbao and San Sebastian. It was reasonable value too.

We visited twice during our stay. Once for afternoon coffee and once for Pintxos in the early evening. The modern decor is comfortable but the venue is one of the oldest. The coffee is smooth and the selection of Pintxos is good. The best pintxo was the barman's suggestion of stuffed pepper. The others including a strange bacalao mixture with sultanas are not as tasty, but the staff are friendly and helpful and the atmosphere is very welcoming. This is the only place we noticed that had wheelchair access and wheelchair users were made very welcome. A very inclusive place and overall very good and recommend you ask for their suggestions to get the best.

Much quieter than the spots in the old town. I walked past this place several times hoping to try their speciality, the 'delicia', but couldn't see it on the menu outside. Don't miss out, as they serve it by the counter! The outside menu only lists their hot Pintxos. The Delcia can be seen on the right. a slice of bread with two thin slices of hard-boiled egg, salt-cured anchovy, and a finely chopped mixture of onion and garlic on top, finished with a dash of Worcestershire sauce. It was exquisite! 👌🏻

Restaurante Txoko is a charming eatery that embodies the essence of Basque culinary culture, particularly through its focus on regional seafood and rice dishes. Accidentally found good reviews about paella so went there to try for lunch. Great view from upstairs. Service was a bit slow as one staff was managing a lot of tables alone. Paella was good but not as good as Valencia. Clams were not in good condition but mussels were really chunky and meaty. Didn’t expect peas in it so that was different. There are some other paella or arroz options in old town but this is slightly outside but reasonable option. Lemon sorbet with cava was perfect for dessert!

Txoko is in a great location near the aquarium and with great view of the harbor if seated upstairs. However, on this night (the Wednesday before Easter), we were one of only four tables in the entire restaurant. Our two young teen servers were sweet and polite but definitely not trained to serve a nice restaurant on their own. Our server delivered the wine and promptly sat the bottle on the table and walked away. No tasting or pouring into glasses. And this is one of the finer restaurants in town! She did the same with the bottle of water. The grilled baby squid was tough and flavorless. However, the peppers and stuffed spider crab in sauce were excellent, as were the grilled scallops though portions were small. The traditional French toast was also good. They have a decent wine list at reasonable prices. I would never recommend or return to this establishment.

Such an amazing find! Our local guide pointed this place out and we were tired, so we ducked in for lunch. Wow! The food is SO good! We started a Seafood Cream soup (an incredibly flavorful bisque) and a Mixed Salad (the photo does not do it justice, there was something magical on those tomatoes) then had Grilled Squid (a work of art!) and Mushroom Scramble as our mains. I hurt myself eating too much because it was all too delicious. Our server Janier was charming and patient with these monolingual Americans. The menu does have English though. Our bottle of Cava Reserva was only 28 euros!

A very average experience unfortunately as we had high hopes for this restaurant. The staff were friendly but very inexperienced and inattentive. Service was rushed and when we sent the main course back to give us more time to digest our food, both dishes came back tepid. At least the place has a decent wine list at reasonable prices. The Albariño was excellent. The upstairs dining room is very tired and in need of a make over. Water marks on the walls and badly chipped paintwork. Would we recommend this place, no.

My partner and I visited this restaurant for what we hoped would be a lovely dinner, but unfortunately the experience was let down by poor service and a lack of care from both staff and management. I ordered the monkfish, which was actually very well cooked and enjoyable. However, my partner ordered a steak to be cooked medium, and this is where the problems began. When the meal arrived, it was immediately obvious that the steak was severely undercooked – blood had seeped into the mashed potatoes, and cutting into the steak revealed it was very rare, more purple than red in the centre. We politely asked for it to be cooked a more, which the waiter agreed to. By the time it came back, I had already finished my meal. Unfortunately, even after the second attempt, the steak was still far too rare and not what you would reasonably expect for a medium steak. At the end of the meal, we explained that we weren’t happy with the steak, expecting some understanding or at least an apology. Instead, the waiter told us we should have sent it back again. We felt this was unreasonable – waiting a third time while one of us had already finished eating would have only worsened the experience. To make matters worse, when we spoke with the manager he doubled down on the same message that we should have sent it back again and, more frustratingly, that it was somehow our fault for not ordering the steak differently. There was no apology, no ownership of the situation, and certainly no gesture of goodwill, such as offering a discount for the inedible steak. This lack of empathy and accountability from the manager was incredibly disappointing. Mistakes in the kitchen happen, but how you handle them as a team is what defines good service. In this case, there was no effort to make things right, and it was made clear that customer satisfaction was not a priority. We left feeling frustrated and let down. Sadly, I cannot recommend this restaurant and would urge others to be cautious.

Mexican restaurant
Nestled in the vibrant Gros neighborhood of Donostia, Topa Sukaldería is a delightful fusion restaurant that beautifully marries Mexican and Basque culinary traditions. Since its opening in 2017, this eatery has become a beloved spot for locals and visitors alike. The talented team, led by renowned chef Andoni Luis Aduriz, draws inspiration from their travels to Latin America, celebrating the rich history shared between these cultures.
We were a little late making reservations while in San Sebastián. One of the highly rated restaurants we tried was booked, but recommended a sister restaurant, Topa. Looked intriguing, so we tried it and we were glad we did. Great food, fun and casual, hip, but nice atmosphere. We opted for the multi course dinner and really enjoyed it. Started with make your own Guacamole, fun thing to do. The ceviche was one of the best we had on our trip.

Nearly excellent. Service was a bit disorganised. Extremely good value for money. Tortillas were undercooked. Better on the second attempt but still under for me - more doughy than soft. Jar of Paloma was delicious at the start of our meal but progressively got worse due to over-dilution. Guacamole was fun and very tasty. Al pastor was awesome. Ceviche was very good - extremely well balanced. Anchovies were the best ever!
Allan — Google review
Food was all good, the classic Mexican dishes were a lot better than the fusion stuff. It was however, all too expensive for what it was, 15ish euros for guacamole with one avocado!
Jimmy P — Google review
Michelin guide did us dirty. Super disappointing dinner. Wish we had repeated our lunch in old town instead of getting talked into the tasting menu here. Guacamole to start was okay, but downhill from there. Quesadilla, tacos and burgers heavy and greasy. We expected upscale Mexican with a basque twist - this missed the mark.
Lip V — Google review
The best meal I’ve had so far here in San Sebastian. From the chips in the guacamole, the quesadilla, and of course the meat, everything was top-notch. It’s a bit on the pricey side but the quality and deliciousness of the food more than makes up for it. I will come back for sure.
Nicole — Google review
The food is delicious. Especially the “pollo lumagorri rosado”. This is the tastiest chicken I’ve ever eaten in my life. Lumagorri is a special type of chicken bred in the Basque Country - look it up, it’s a crazy chicken - in a good sense. They only serve it twice a week, though. The tacos were also delicious. The restaurant makes a basque inspired tortilla which is really good and fresh. I highly recommend this restaurant. Especially if you need a break from all the pinxtos. 😊
Adam W — Google review
We arrived early for the restaurant before its official opening time and were slightly confused about how to enter until the door was officially opened by the staff. I’m not familiar with Mexican food so we can’t say for sure how authentic it is. We really enjoyed the guacamole and it seemed to be their most popular dish since almost every table in the restaurant ordered the same dish. Definitely the standout dish, not to mention the presentation of the dish, mixing it together yourself. The crab cake was enjoyable too. Cocktails are generous in size and value for money.
Rachel L — Google review
I had an absolutely amazing dining experience at Topa Skulderia! From start to finish, the meal was a culinary delight. The shrimp tacos were a perfect starter—fresh, flavorful, and perfectly seasoned. The Topa cheese Iberian ham and the mushroom variation were also fantastic additions to the menu, offering rich, savory bites. But the true standout was the Arepa with hake, a limited edition item that was simply divine. The sauce, texture, and presentation (served on a Tiki Head style plate!) were all top-notch, easily a 10 out of 10. To top it off, the Lumagorri chicken was an absolute treat. It literally melted in my mouth, with its incredible sauce and tender texture making every bite memorable. You should deffo try cocktails, too. Overall, Topa Skulderia delivered a perfect dining experience that I can't wait to repeat. Highly recommend!

Nestled in a vibrant atmosphere, Casa 887 Jatetxea offers an exceptional dining experience that beautifully marries upscale regional cuisine with a relaxed ambiance. The establishment is the brainchild of chef Antonio Carlos Fountoura Belotti, who draws inspiration from his Brazilian roots and childhood memories of family gatherings around the dinner table. At Casa 887, guests can savor innovative dishes like crispy spider crab dumplings and squid ink bao buns, all while enjoying the subtle beats of hip hop in the background.
The most amazing dining experience we've had in a long time. The food is incredible here. Definitely try the Red Tuna Nigiri. If I could have that as a main course that would be the definition of heaven. The service and the atmosphere was warm and inviting. There was one USA couple that started causing a scene halfway through but the staff handled them respectfully and politely so it didn't disturb the other diners. Another interesting dish to try is the Tempura Shrimp Bao, how do they make the bao bun black?! Delicious.
Mez P — Google review
We were looking for a upscale spot that leaned more casual, and Casa 887 Jatetxea was perfect. Absolutely loved everything we ordered — the spider crab, old cow prime rib and flan were the standouts!
Kareem K — Google review
We were 8 adults and 2 small kids. The food was delicious, especially the tona , the rice and the meat. The wine we ordered was the best we had in a long time…
Pnina Z — Google review
We tried four dishes - bao with tempura shrimp, xxl carabinero, cod with crispy potatoes and stuffed spider crab. Definitely recommended carabineros (which are difficult to fault) and stuffed spider crab. Bao with tempura shrimp and cod didn’t live to our expectations. Their olives served as amuse bouche were amazing! A glass of champagne for €20 felt a bit overpriced. Overall good experience but not with all plates.

I was expecting a lot, seeing all the other reviews and food in this town must be really good to make it. However, we were quite disappointed. Let me explain. We ordered the tasting menu and just sparkling water. The water came, but short of a glass, which we had to ask 2 waiters before the glass arrived. The bread served was nice, this costs extra - which wasn’t told to us until the bill. The campo olives served was actually quite nice, for people who don’t normally like olives. The fried piparras was interesting. Then came a trio of oyster, scallop nigiri (came with truffle and wasabi, but the wasabi overpowered the truffle unfortunately) and steak tartare. Nothing too spectacular. Red tuna tiradito was next, which was quite nice. Wasabi emulsion was mild. Best dish of the night. The prawn tempura in a squid ink bao, was very mid. I’ve had better tempura in a mall restaurant. Feels like Asian food for non-Asians. Fish of the day was sea bass. Decent but I had 2 large fish bones (about 1 inch each) in my piece. This was really disappointing for a restaurant of this caliber. Told the waitress, who said she’ll inform the chef. No service recovery. We opted for the ‘premium old cow’. I think they need a better copy writer. This strangely came with a very plain salad of lettuce, and fries. This portion (1 kg of beef) was very large, a whole meal in itself which is unusual for last main of a tasting menu. Beef was decent, but I didn’t think worth the extra 30 euro. Last dessert was flan (very ordinary) and basque cheesecake with straws ice cream- which wasn’t told very nice. All in, nothing spectacular. Service was not super great, food was very ordinary and poor attention to detail (the 2 bones). Was not worth the price we paid.
Soo G — Google review
High quality food from sashimi to squid ink bao’s to rice dishes. We especially liked their signature prawn rice that was nicely crispy, but the raw fish department was delicious too.

I loved the experience at this restaurant! The atmosphere is very pleasant, creating a cozy and enjoyable ambiance. The service was excellent, with an attentive and professional team. The food is delicious, fresh, and features authentic dishes that reflect great care in preparation. The tuna dishes were my favorites, and the sashimi was one of the best I have ever had in my life. The restaurant offers an excellent selection of wines, which perfectly complements the dining experience. I definitely recommend it!

On a tiny local square. Lots of kids running around early, though quietens in the evening. Exceptional dinner. Service staff utterly delightful and an extensive wine list. Highly recommend.

It had great presentation, service was warm and attentive and the staff spoke english so could explain where need be. The dishes however felt tired and in some cases confused. Highlights were definitely the basil ice cream with gazpacho style soup and the chicken wings. However the hake dish was poorly executed with rather than a fillet being used we were given the middle spine of the fish leaving parts of it tough and inedible. The tuna main was also ill conceived being served with a thick, brown sauce that would be more at home with some beef or rack of lamb. Overall there is great potential here but it all needs a refresh and minor changes to the decor. What was concerning was the lack of restaurant clientele with those there preferring a single dish or starters with a drink.

It was a little hard to find as the entrance was around the building as opposed to the main Street. The interior design was nice and they had one of the better air-conditions. We had 2 dishes which were ok without impressing. But it was fairly cheap. The service and time between dishes was a little on the slow side though we were the only table. Other than that it was fine.

Great restaurant without doubt, be aware that they serve the steak like the French and medium is rare. The steak could do with being cut properly when they bring it to you also as their steak knives were blunt. The meat was great quality. I am being fussy, it was good value and as long as you are aware of the meat prep you'll be fine, the fish looked great also.

The food was very good, they had a nice menu and lots of daily specials; the restaurant is nice inside and outside, spacious, well set up. Now with COVID-19 all preventive measures are observed. But the best bit was the staff: they were exquisitely nice! I don't remember when I felt so well taken care of. One of us had a small episode and they were so incredibly nice. Fortunately it wasn't bad and we could resume our lunch, that was really good. I will certainly come back!

Altuna Boutique taberna is a cozy and elegant spot located in the center of town, just a block from La Concha beach. It's an ideal place for a sophisticated post-beach lunch with high-quality small plates such as fresh oysters, carpaccio-style cured beef, octopus on potato puree, and foie gras. The atmosphere is relaxing and perfect for enjoying a conversation with friends or family. The staff is professional and polite, adding to the overall pleasant experience.
Aptly named to include the words "boutique" and "taberna," Altuna Boutique and taberna serves surprisingly creative and delicious foods that one can share for two, adroitly, respecting the farm fresh ingredients while enhancing flavor and character out of varied traditions including French and Italian and, I think, international Cuban. There is fun and joy in the vibe of the food and even the background music. We had lobster ravioli with sea urchin and cashews and marinated muscles as well as seasonal scallops with lobster claws and dried fruits and seaweed and sweet potato and plantain and eel sauce. Both so different and tasty, with a vibe also of traditional Basque food. The wine and cocktail list was varied and surprising, including even rum! You will enjoy the delicious and surprising food in this generous and hospitable place!

Was probably the best food we had in San Sebastian this time. And it is really difficult here! Because San sebastian is all about food! We had jamon for starter and it was excellent. Exactly the right temperature and very thin cut. Then we had ravioli with lobster and it was to die for! And then the stoffed meat of chuletta. Also excellent. The only minus point is furniture: chairs look quite outdated. Location of the restaurant is also very nice . Can definitely recommend it for lunch or dinner!

Was a nice meal. We had young kids with us and they had some small dishes that they really liked. Steak and tomato salad was good. The bacon, crisp and runny egg was pretty gross and our server simply forgot to send our mains causing significant delay. Normally wouldn’t mind, but our kids had to be very patient. Barely an apology or anything done to make up for it.

Maun Grill Bar is a small but well-appointed space where two talented chefs cook and serve fabulous food. Visitors can enjoy a great setup to see the fresh seafood of the day on display. The menu features the best steak ever eaten, cooked perfectly and expertly carved for ease of eating.
Excellent. We just told them to bring us an impromptu tasting menu for whatever they liked. They brought us white asparagus, hake, shrimp ravioli, grilled shrimp and more. Really delicately made.
Mitch G — Google review
Incredibly delicious, incredibly overpriced. 24 euros for 8 clams, 30 euros for 6 scallops and 65 euros for an extremely basic paella. The service was with a sell, especially on the high margin starter dishes which our front of house strongly recommended, which turned out to literally be a tiny dish with ‘good’ but not out of this world flavour. Eg the clams came with a garlic sauce. Absolutely lovely, just not for 24 euros. Please note that we’ve eaten at ‘expensive’ reteraunts all weeks, so we’re not price sensitive, it’s just quite a bit over priced. Flavours and taste 4/5 Service 3/4 Atmosphere 3/5 Price 2/5 For a total score of 3/5
SHAD — Google review
The scallops tastes little bit sour and spicy, strange flavors, we didn’t like it, the squid is fresh. Btw, the scallops cost 30 euro and squid costs 40 euro which I think is kind of expensive as in a bar in the market.
Vivien M — Google review
This is exactly the kind of place Anthony Bourdain would have championed. Maun is a truly special experience, set up right in the aisles of the San Martín Market after the stalls close for the day. The atmosphere is electric—a vibe of pure innovation with active music, centered around a passionate love for the product. The philosophy is "market-to-table" in its most honest form, and the flavours are incredibly punchy and direct. We started with the tomatoes, and they were a revelation, simply bursting with flavour. From there, every dish was a standout. The grilled prawns, scallops, and clams were cooked with masterful precision on the charcoal grill, letting the supreme quality of the seafood shine through. It's clear the chef is an award-winning master of his craft. This is skillful, unpretentious cooking that celebrates its ingredients. For anyone who loves vibrant food with no fuss, this is your spot. An absolute gem in San Sebastián that I cannot recommend highly enough.
Conor D — Google review
We had a great dinner at Maun, special thanks to Unai who was so friendly and had all knowledge about menu and dishes, he suggested off menu Langoustine Ravioli and it was to die for, especially the sauce! We had good tomato salad and greatly charred txuleta to finish! We will be definitely back for the peas in April:)

Absolutely amazing. Fantastic food, with some really complex and well balanced flavours. Not 'cheap' but absolutely worth what you pay. We were able to just walk in shortly after opening, no issues getting a table. They offered to craft a menu for us - like a mini tasting menu. It was awesome. Highly recommend the scallops and ceviche. Mustn't miss this place if you are in the area.
Jack R — Google review
Situated in a shared market, this place is putting on a clinic in great seafood. I recommend waiting for the chef to tell you what is not on the menu due to freshness and then get at least one of those. I also recommend anything with shellfish because they are experts at making shellfish that bring out the true meatiness and character of the shellfish. My coquitas and scallops were correctly done and had oil-based sauces that cut their meatiness well. I also recommend at least trying any rice dish to which they do a great job of adding fish stock or paste. In my case it was shrimp paste to go along with the massive prawn. Great work, clearly they are on the path to their own larger standalone.

With a focus on organic wines made with native yeasts and no sulfites, the establishment offers a diverse selection of delicious wines. The menu features simple yet flavorful dishes that showcase a creative twist on familiar ingredients. Guests praise the attentive staff and recommend making reservations in advance due to limited seating.
We came to San Sebastián for the food—and this place completely blew us away. We didn’t have a reservation and just walked in for a casual dinner, but what we got was anything but ordinary. The menu is small, but every single dish sounds (and tastes) incredible. The way they combine seasonal, local ingredients is just next level—every bite was an explosion of flavor. We genuinely had fun while eating, which says a lot. The service was super friendly and charming, and the atmosphere is cozy and full of character. They also have an amazing selection of natural wines, which paired beautifully with the food. The price-to-quality ratio is more than fair, and we’d absolutely come back in a heartbeat. Can’t recommend it enough—this spot is a real gem.

We had the ravioli, costilla, panna cotta, and wine. The mushrooms with the ricotta ravioli, the sweet potato puree with the beef, everything just went so well together. It was really flavorful. They had a good selection of wines. Everything was reasonably priced. We came in for dinner without a reservation but didn’t have to wait to be seated as there were many available tables. The staff were friendly and accommodating. All in all, it was great value for money and we would happily eat here again and recommend this place to others as well.

What a great meal! Tasty, fresh, loads of veg and yummy flavour combos. Highly highly recommend for a nice sit down meal and break from pintxos. The tuna was epic as were the ravioli. Also, EUR 2.50 highly quaffable wine in a resto? Divine. Service is perfunctory and the space is tiny but it adds to the charm. Call to book.
Kelly W — Google review
When we walked in we thought we had the wrong place and wondered what the gal at our hotel was thinking. But after the first bite we realized we were in a very special place. The place feel is like an American dive bar but the food and service are extraordinary. I was skeptical of the flavor combinations based on the descriptions on the menu and was completely blown away by how well everything worked. I ordered my first glass of wine and should have had the server pick it because he chose my second glass and it was perfect. Our 20 year old was with us and they are primarily a vegetarian but will eat fish occasionally which is good because they were able to eat all of the things we ordered with only slight modifications (like us removing the ham from on top of one of the dishes). The menu is limited but they focus on local and seasonal ingredients which means we expect that the menu changes fairly frequently. When we are in San Sebastián again, we will be going back to see what other amazing things they produce out of their tiny kitchen. And for reference, we ordered 5 plates between the 3 of us and it was plenty. Definitely a hidden gem.

Basqueland Izakaia offers a vibrant brewpub atmosphere with industrial-modern decor and eclectic music, reminiscent of Austin. The place is known for its fantastic craft beers, including hazy IPAs and DIPAs. The friendly service adds to the experience, making it a must-visit spot in Donosti. Additionally, the izakaya serves delicious Asian food, such as shrimp tacos and Bao snacks.
Was staying in the old town but as a craft beer fan I recognized this brewery name from a beer fest years ago and decided to make walk over. The place itself has a perfect craft brewery vibe. Small and cozy, beer list on a homemade chalk boards and of course a great staff to help navigate ur visit. We stopped by shortly after open and the bartender was able to recommend a few different options including a beer that wasn’t on the list yet along with a bao bun that wasn’t listed either. Both were amazing.

Staff will focus on the locals. The locals will push past you to the bar. You will feel unwelcome. But they make some of the best beer in Spain and it doesn’t get fresher. Great craft beers. The food was a good surprise. I am Asian and I mostly avoid Asian food while travelling in Europe because it’s never as good as back home. A number of bites here were definitely Chinese or Asian inspired but not authentic to the original. They were innovative and very tasty. The dandan noodles come at 3 levels of spice. I had level 2 which was ok spice for a palate that is used to fiery dishes. Staff were very friendly and gave good recommendations for beers to try. They even gave recommendations to other small towns to visit and eat at. I really appreciated that!

Thanks to Google Maps reviews, I found this excellent cheese shop! They have an impressive selection of Basque and other cheeses. What’s also impressive is the friendly, patient and knowledgeable service. Forty years ago, Mom tasted a cheese at a fancy restaurant and fell in love with it. She thought she would remember the name but that was before she had a cell phone. For 40 years, I have described the appearance and taste to various cheese sellers but I have never found anything close. Today, Mom has been reunited with a taste and texture that she loves! At Elkano 1 - Gaztagune, they kindly cut me 5 small wedges of cheese that I already knew/loved as well as new discoveries. I got to taste some similar cheeses too. Thank you! We enjoyed our cheese with bread and grapes from La Bretxa market. A light yet delicious dinner.

Sport Taberna is a hidden gem in San Sebastian's old city, known for its wide variety of cold and hot pintxos. While it's popular during sports events, the real draw is the gourmet selection of pintxos. The bar offers an array of delicious options, from gildas with olives, pickled peppers, and anchovies to foie gras soaked in brandy and flash-fried.
Flight your way to the bar and you're guaranteed some terrific bites. The attentive, multitasking staff behind the counter hustles to bring out highlights including the mini hamburger, crab-stuffed crepe, and bacon-wrapped chorizo. Loved the it

We discovered this place on YouTube and we could say this was probably the most crowded place among any other similar places. On our first try, we skipped and left because it was impossible to order anything due to the crowd. On another day around 5 PM, it was much easier to order something with some patience and 10minutes waiting time. We enjoyed the food but found nothing really special about this place, I think you can find similar or maybe even better food, around the area, so don’t limit yourself to this place or don’t consider this bar as a “must to come and eat” in San Sebastián, explore other places. If you have reading this far then let me tell you that I have been joking to deviate you from here to another bar so that we could enjoy some less crowd at this place to be honest this place has very tasty ones and the bread is the best, the meat is great and calamari was so tasty!! Visit this place but be mindful of people trying to order also so make some space for everyone 🤞

They could use a bit of a renovation but never the less, enjoyed this place. A MUST when visiting San Sebastian. servers were pleasant and friendly. Food served warm (UNlike at ❌Casa Vergara❌ 🤭where food is served C O L D - Literally & figuratively)

I love this place. Some of the best bites of the year here. Highly recommend the pictured pork sandwich, insane flavor. But the real star is the foie gras, one of the best bites of food I’ve ever had in my entire life. The vermut was also really special and the waiters are incredible. Quite cheap too for what you get, 4 dishes and a drink for around €20

The food was excellent! The vibe was perfect and the staff were all great! Funny, friendly and kept it moving. The cheesecake was perfection! Highly recommend as a must stop! There are tables available but we stood at the bar.

Best foie gras in town - we went back twice. The sea urchin soup was very creamy and smooth. Overall the best pintxos we’ve had but expect the over crowd and everyone yelling in your ear.

From creamy cod croquettes to roasted pork belly with hummus, each dish showcases a blend of avant-garde and traditional cuisine.
Solid place. Unlike my previous sad experiences in the area, I enjoyed this place immensely. There was service that didn’t stress me out and table tops etc to eat your food at without feeling like a fugitive. The lady serving us was polite and not time pushy. Onto the food…. Tasty and Tasty and Tasty. Totally recommend the Foie Gras which came in a pistachio custard like sauce. Total attack on the heart but worth it. When in town, make an effort to visit this establishment. Beautiful setting right next to a baroque church ⛪️

One of the best restaurants in San Sebastián, my order was patatas bravas, Arroz (I love it 😍) and carrillera. Food was tasty. Also I would like to send special thanks to staff and special thanks to Kata and Martin, they were amazing and helpful person, Kata advice me a lot and explained the menu well, thanks a lot to her. And Martin he let me feel that restaurant is my home. Highly recommended to visit and try food here.

I went on a Sunday at about 4pm and did not have to wait. You either eat standing at the bar (and you order there) or you sit at a table (and wait to be served). Service is good. Attentive, friendly service. I ordered the pinxtos: steak, foie gras, cod with pepper sauce, prawn bruschetta. They were all fantastic. Would definitely return.

We came here for the octopus as we heard it was one of the best places to get it in San Sebastián and it definitely did not disappoint! The portion size was huge (enough for two to share) and it was delicious. Wish I lived nearby! The pintxos were also great.
Eloise R — Google review
First time here and really enjoyed it! The seafood was fresh, especially the octopus and hake fish, both were excellent. The beef was tasty but cut a bit too thick to me, so it was very chewy. Overall, great experience and friendly service!

Wonderful place in the heart of San Sebastian’s Old Town! The atmosphere is cozy, stylish, and full of character. The food is delicious and has its own special touch. The staff is friendly and attentive, and the service is excellent. It is a real pleasure to sit by the window and admire the beautiful architecture around. The restaurant is located right across from the stunning sculpture “Armonía del Sonido” on the façade of the Santa María del Coro Basilica, a masterpiece of modern art that perfectly reflects the harmony of this place. I was very pleased with my visit and will definitely come back! 🌿✨

Great place! It was super busy and you need to wait 5-10 mins inside to make an order, then to picking up your order another hustle to get in thru the crowd! However, fois gras and scallops were the superstars! We couldnt even take a photo and just ate! At the end, if you dont mind the crowd, one of the best in the city.

Fantastic food - from the Pintxos to the food from the menu, went to a couple of bars in San Sebastián and this was my favorite one. You have to get the pork belly with hummus! Also very kind service, reasonable prices so I can’t wait to go back here one day :)

Mesón Portaletas offers a rustic-chic setting with a medieval stone wall, creating an inviting atmosphere for diners to enjoy delicious tapas, pintxos, and paellas made with high-quality and fresh ingredients. The restaurant is known for its gourmet paellas featuring exquisite and sometimes unconventional ingredients like octopus and squid. Located in the old town of the city, it provides both pintxos at the bar and table service.
Meson Portaletas, in San Sebastián in the basque region of Spain is a great place to enjoy Pintxos. There is an extensive selection all beautifully presented and wide variety. Service is prompt and professional. Both hot and cold Pintxos available.
Jeff F — Google review
Nestled under the gates of old town the location is great, and luckily the food is equally fantastic. Although we only stopped of for one dish we were glad it was the crispy pork as it was deliciously crispy, meaty and sat upon a creamy mash sauce that balanced out the salty flavour. The perfect compliment to a drink to an ice cold drink.
Jit S — Google review
Great service, friendly staff, spacious restaurant. Creative modern paella. They crisp the rice from the top, and serve it in a squarish pan. But. The shrimp was not particularly fresh, a bit fishy smelling. Mushy flesh if you know what I mean. Not crisp as it should be. The beef is amazing. Flavorful, super tender, not a tough spot on each piece. You can fix this Meson Portales, get it back! 👏
Darren J — Google review
Mesón Portales turned out to be a pleasant surprise. The pintxos were excellent, combining traditional Basque flavors with remarkable freshness and creativity. We also had the chance to try a seasonal dish: baby tuna (bonito) served in a rich, savory sauce accompanied by fried green peppers. The combination was both hearty and refined — a perfect example of how local cuisine can balance simplicity with depth of flavor.

Friendly service and very kid friendly. The pinxos are great but I also loved ordering off the menu. The risotto and steak were my favs! But I’m sure everything is good.
Zabrina H — Google review
Very nice location! The fish and the meat in the paella was exquisite, but the rice per se lacked some taste. The pinxos were incredibly tasty , same goes for their basque cheesecake
Applina_ D — Google review
Fantastic friendly staff, happy to help explain the different Pintxos. Huge range and super tasty. Also from the hot menu, you MUST try the risotto de setas y gambas. It’s a Michelin star winner for me.
B J — Google review
A well-known pintxo spot in San Sebastián, and for good reason! I tried several pintxos, and the standout for me was the octopus with potatoes, absolutely amazing. The mushroom and cheese pintxo was also delicious, and the meat in brioche was very good. The only letdown was the tartare pintxo. The outer layer was too dry, likely from sitting on display for too long, while the inside remained creamy. I think it would be much better if prepared à la minute instead of being left out for too long. The atmosphere is great, and the place also serves full dinners, which I’d love to come back and try. They have a nice drink selection; I had white wine, which was very good, and others had cerveza de limón, which they also enjoyed. Overall, I really liked it and would return!

It’s a really nicely decorated tapas bar with super nice cold beer, twisted tapas that veer very very tasty and nice staff. Worth visiting. The one in the PINXOS list was actually the less tasty but still good one
D — Google review
Sadly below expectations. The hot pintxos were disappointing – the risotto was overcooked, and the fideuá didn’t match the menu photo. Friendly service and decent wine, but overall overpriced and touristy. Not recommended.
Romenz81 — Google review
Nestled in a neighborhood a short walk from the old quarter, the tapas was overall above average. The foie gras pastry with grapes was well done, as well as the scallops. The scrambled eggs with anchovies - very generous portion of anchovies.
Keira H — Google review
The pintxos look exquisite, MUCH better than in the menu. The flavours though are very similar to each other: practically everything tasted creamy, slightly fishy with a hint of pepper. Some were frankly rather underwhelming (looking at you, delicias de pato). The service was very prompt, although our request to tell which pintxos were which in our order was ignored. The level of noise inside is not for the faint-hearted.
Floyd C — Google review
The pinchos are awesome! Lots of variety, and they were ready instantly!! As a Canadian I appreciated trying things I don't normally get to try like a pincho with anchovies and a pincho with duck. Nice outdoor seating area too. A good choice in San Sebastian.

Juanito Kojua is a renowned restaurant in the old part of San Sebastian, known for its creative approach to traditional Basque seafood and grilled meats. Despite not having Michelin stardom, it has gained fame throughout Spain for its consistently excellent fresh fish and shellfish dishes prepared with robust Basque recipes. The restaurant boasts a warm rustic decor and is managed by a family that has built a loyal clientele over the years.
Everything was perfect for us! First, since we went on a weekday in February for lunch, right when they open, we practially had "private dining", which in this restaurant already creates such an amazing atmosphere. Second, the service staff is well educated in their craft and gives just the right amount of attention to the guests. This adds to the experience of being comfortably pampered while enjoying some great food. We took the daily menu, with croquettes and jambon with bean pods as a starter. This perfectly set the stage for some smooth-tasting mains -- the cod in vizcaina souce and the beef cheeks. Both cooked to perfection, in taste and texture. To finish our meal we took the cheese cake and the sheep's milk "yogurt". Again just perfect. What a great start into a sunny spring-like afternoon in San Sebastian.

A friendly and charming restaurant serving traditional dishes that are typical of the region. The cheese for dessert was lovely when paired with some port. And the Gilda tuna / anchovies was very special - a great spin on a classic.

Very disappointed. Tuna tartar was tasteless and looked like cat food. The beef was as blue as the sky. We had to return it to get a few more minutes on the grill. When it returned it was edible but barely. The chef looked at me with disgust and then he turned to the staff and uttered something we did not understand. They all started to laugh. One of our party had to rush to the lavatory due to the uncooked food. Desert was lovely as were the staff but the food was dismal. Send in Gordon Ramsey and I'm sure he would burn that Michelin star or even urinate on it. Serious let down. Nearly 200 euro for 3 people and just one drink each

The seasonal €40 menu was excellent — every dish was delicious, especially the beef bone. Unfortunately, service fell short when a waitress spilled red wine on the table and my shirt and didn’t apologize or offer help, though the wine was comped. Great food, but the handling of the accident left a bad impression. Maybe rethink the large salt and pepper mills. They seem unnecessarily big.

We had something like 11 tapas, 4 glasses wine and one beer for under E50. We went back in the evening it was so good. A little quieter and not as many a selection, but still great. But go anytime around lunch for the best experience.

Situated on a corner of one of the main streets leading into the old town, this is a down to earth pintxos bar with limited seating. The atmosphere is fantastic as it's good mix of locals and tourists. A great selection of pintxos that are slightly different to the more touristy spots. Service is quick and to the point. Stand by the bar with a glass of Rioja / Txakoli / Kalimotxo / Tinto de Verano or beer and soak up the local culture. A great spot to start your Pintxos tour or to finish as it does stay open till late.

We came here for breakfast — everything looked beautiful and nicely presented. My vegan sandwich was tasty and well-balanced. However, my friend’s salmon and egg dish was overly salty. Unfortunately, both the coffee and the tea latte were very watery and lacked flavor, and the same goes for the smoothie — it tasted bland and diluted.

It’s a solid Taverna. Service was a little odd - but very very friendly staff. I was on the fence getting the big steak (Txuleta) because of price vs can they deliver? And I feel they did. We were stuffed. The cider was a little disappointing- but it’s probably just not our type of cider. I’d go back.

The best fish we had in all of our trip (Asturias and País Vasco), by far; Grilled monkfish (rape in Spanish) just with a garlic-lemon sauce and some potatoes. It was absolutely delicious! Although the food was okay, the experience and the service was horrible. I just don’t like this Spanish system that you are under the mercy of the waiter to get served. If you don’t force yourself, they serve others who came after you. Also I don’t know what’s with not making eye contact when they realize you’re a tourist. That is not to mention that they didn’t have any of the hot plates available.

The restaurant serves top quality food and it is certainly worth trying the menu of the day, which at €17.90 for a 3 course meal and an alcoholic drink is very good value. Amazing modern brunch right next to the cathedral. Great coffee and food, we did have to wait for a table (where good don't you in San Sebastien), but you are given a fob that tells you when it's ready and to head back. Worth the wait. Perfect flat whites, and everyone loved the food. It was so good we came back again on the last day of our holiday.

Absolutely unreal. There were no tables available when we got there, so they gave us a beeper. We took the time to see the cathedral nearby, and came back to have the most AMAZING brunch. Everything was perfect: food, waiters, location, atmosphere (we talked a whole lot to the people at other tables)! The star of the show to me was the cinnamon roll, it's got a gooey and soft texture that I haven't had before. Really good! My only general complaint is that the portion sizes are too small...you know the food is good when the only problem is that there isn't more of it!

Nestled on the bustling Calle 31 de Agosto, Bar Martinez is a beloved establishment that has been delighting locals and visitors alike since its inception in 1942. This vibrant bar is steeped in history, having been founded by pioneers Manuel Martinez and Juliana Gil, who played a significant role in shaping the culinary landscape of Donostia. With an impressive array of traditional pintxos and innovative dishes, Bar Martinez beautifully marries time-honored recipes with contemporary flair.
We came here on our food tour two days ago, and I couldn’t wait to return on our own. We came on a Wednesday afternoon at about 1:30 and I was pleasantly surprised that we got a table. The stuffed piquillo peppers (with tuna) are a specialty and they are delicious. I returned here because I wanted/needed to have them again. Also got the shrimp with potato salad, scallops, and the Spanish omelette (which is like a tortilla here in San Sebastián). Everything was fresh and delicious. The owner was our waitress and I can’t even tell you how helpful and patient she was. And she spoke English. Not sure where others may have had issues but I find if I’m pleasant, friendly, and gracious I always receive wonderful service. This was no exception. The prices were super reasonable. For all of the pintxos mentioned above, and a glass of wine for both me and my hubby, it was less than €28. I’ll leaving San Sebastián but if I was staying longer I would be back again!

First time in San Sebastian, and first time eating in the city and at this place. We loved the food although the grilled cubes of loin had a bit of too much oil, but that's my personal taste. The beer was very good, the cheese croquetes were amazing (very soft and creamy). The service was very friendly and attentive, the lady who served us was very careful with my wife allergie to pepper and checked carefully with the kitchen for pepper in the food. The space is very small but cosy. The toilets are old but they were clean. If we return to San Sebantian and want to be sure we eat good food we'll return here for sure.

We had the sweetest Aunty serve us. We came here after a long travel day and was able to grab a table right away as someone left. And we enjoyed every starred ⭐️menu item⭐️. Open every day and no siestas, they work hard and the food is simply amazing 5/5!!!

The food and service were excellent. We sat at the bar and tried the pepper stuffed with tuna which were delicious. Also tried the Gilda (anchovy, chilli peppers and an olive) - a must with a glass of txakoli a carbonated young white wine. Would have been 5 stars but for the state of the ladies toilet.

lovely pintxos spot and very kind staff, would recommend to anyone! Delicious gildas (lots of chilli, which I like!) and everything else we tried was also delicious

Great food excellent service. One of the better pinxtos establishments.

My friend ordered in English and the guy behind the counter had no problem understanding. Then I asked the guy what was in one of the stuffed snacks (usually cheese or ham). He grabbed it and started putting it on the plate so I switched to Spanish and said "no, que es adentro?" meaning "no, what is inside?" I wanted to know what it was stuffed with before I ordered it. The guy literally rolled his eyes, and in Spanish dropped an F bomb (starts with J in Spanish) and aggressively shouted, "ham!" in Spanish. I know this was not a communication issue on my end because it was super simple Spanish, well within my ability, and my accent is excellent. I ordered the snack. Turns out it was stuffed with artichokes and ham. The place was super super packed and the food was good but just as good as many other places that won't charge tourist prices. There is no reason to go here versus somewhere else unless you like abusive staff. Here is a tip, get out of old town and go to a different neighborhood with fewer tourists. The staff will generally not treat you like trash in those places.

Good value, very good wine (€2.15 for a white wine) & good selection of pinchos.

Seafood restaurant
Mediterranean restaurant
Seafood farm
Abakando is a sleek and elegant locale known for its colorful decor and specializes in serving pintxos and fresh seafood from their own hatchery. The restaurant offers an exceptional dining experience with a sophisticated ambiance and attentive service. The seafood is particularly outstanding, with a focus on quality and freshness at unbeatable prices. Guests can enjoy specialties like the rice with lobster or the delicious lobster stew, fish, and prawns.
We visited the restaurant Abacando and were very pleased! The service was fast and attentive, our waiter spoke English very well, he told us about the restaurant. The interior of the place is quite simple, but that didn't affect the quality of the dishes, which were simply amazing. We especially loved the crab croquettes and the delightful lobster rice. A huge thank you for a wonderful evening and delicious food!

Delicious seafood. I requested the fish with lobster and prawns. Came with small amount of soup in it and potato which overall was pretty tasty. The price is little bit high but the food was plenty and I took the rest as takeaway. The staff are amazing and thx to Michael I hope I mentioned his correctly, he was charming and hospitable with us during our special requests and during eating the meal.

A local jewel of a restaurant. Wonderful outdoor seating in a quiet setting. The service was friendly and accommodating. The seafood was delicious, perfectly prepared and nicely presented.

This is a very fine restaurant. Gorgeous selection to choose from the menu. Reasonable prices for both the food and wines. Would highly recommend.

Wow. We just had a really enjoyable dinner here with great service, excellent food, and really nice wine. Our hotel recommended this place, because we couldn't get a reservation at another restaurant that we initially wanted to try. We went there without any expectations, and we're blown away. The restaurant gets their produce fresh delivered everyday, and you can really taste it in the food. To be honest, everything we had was phenomenal, except for the oysters, which were good, but nothing special. The grilled mushrooms with truffled yolk dish was amazing! The other really memorable dish was the hake fish cheeks that were grilled. This is our last night in San Sebastian, and we are certainly leaving on a high note. I would highly recommend this restaurant for a local basque meal to remember.

After being seated at a dirty table, we ordered a few pintxos which included expired oysters that fortunately did not result in food poisoning and a chewy, gelatinous ravioli that was inedible. We elected to go elsewhere for our entrees.

Just off the city center a wonderful local restaurant with yummy fresh seafood and friendly prices. One of the best San Sebastián cheesecake offered, a delight. Different seating options available, terrace, bar or indoor restaurant room.

Bar
Spanish restaurant
Haizea is a charming and unpretentious tapas bar located in San Sebastian's Old Town. It offers a relaxed and friendly atmosphere, along with creative made-to-order pintxos that are unique to the bar. Some of its standout dishes include the famous foie gras served with apple, cod and prawn fritters, pickled banana peppers with anchovies, and the daily winning cod brick.
Dropped by for breakfast - as one might expect, no pintxos at this time of day. But the bocadillos were fabulous, particularly the one with the tortilla with prawn and garlic. Bread was crispy and freshly toasted, the sweetness of the prawns running through the omelette was such a special treat for a breakfast. Coffee and freshly squeezed orange juice were great as well.

We stopped in with a small tour with a local guide. We had so many different pintxos from scallops to mushrooms. The flavor presentation and service = a perfect representation of the area. Can’t wait to come back.
Eileen N — Google review
Fantastic pintxos bar slightly off the beaten path as it's just outside the tourist area of old town. We visited this place as it was literally on the corner of our hotel. There is limited seating with 4 tables inside accomodating around 8 seats. The rest is standing by the bar or outside. Don't let that stop tasting some excellent pintxos such as the scallop and prawn skewer, soft shell crab and duck with plum sauce. The scallops were juicy, tender and fresh and the duck was well seasoned and moist. The crab roe was creamy and rich similar to a bisque. It's always busy and full of locals but caters for tourist with an english menu and friendly english speaking staff. There is on street parking available outside.

The gratin scallops / zamburiñas gratinadas are a must here! 🤤. This month I’m finally back in San Sebastián and I can’t wait to have them again, though it is hard to beat the first time I had them a few years ago in 2022. 😊🙏🏼 Eskerrik Asko / Thank you team Haizea!

We were looking for breakfast and lucked in with this little bar near the market. In appalling Spanglish I selected the most delicious pintos and brotexta. Stuffed leek, artichoke and mushroom and eggs on toast with crab mousse and prawn. The cortado and americano also charged us up for the morning. Wonderful start to the day.
Ann I — Google review
We arrived at 13:30 to this tiny 400 square foot tapas bar. There are three tables inside and about 10 bar stools but most folks are just whipping in and having a beer. My partner was not in the mood to deal with ordering so I bellied up to the bar. Our total order cost 33.8€ and included 4 glasses of house red wine. What a screaming deal! We had a scallop and prawn brochette, the brick of bacalao, prawn & langostino fritters, meatballs with potatoes, a bit of duck loin served on a garlic toast, and scallops gratin. It was all a taste sensation! The brochette had two prawns encircling a scallop and put on a grill. The simplicity was perfection! My partner wanted to order two bricks of bacalao but I said no. I was wrong! This was a bit of salted cod wrapped like a present in phyllo type dough. The ribbon was green onions. It was baked and came out crispy but so creamy. The fritters, called buñuelos, were very eggy, light and full of shrimp flavor with a crisp crust. The albondigas were my least favorite but they were delicious, tender, and swimming in a delicious mild brown sauce. They were accentuated by small slices of fried potatoes that were sprinkled with salt. The sirloin of duck was a tiny piece of grilled duck served on a delicious garlic toast surrounded by deep fried potato chips and drizzled with a blackberry sauce. Oh, my little pony! So good! Finally, one of the daily specials was a scallop gratinee. Two shells arrived with a small scallop on each covered in a cheddar cheese sauce. It wasn’t my favorite as I’m not a fan of cheese sauce but it was still beautiful and tasty. During our almost two hours of eating, I knocked over two chairs and my partner knocked over his wine glass onto the marble table. Although we tried to wreck the place (not really!) people were still so nice to us. It should be noted that in this city, people don’t speak Spanish. They speak to you in Basque and I reply in Spanish. Again, folks are so accommodating to us. Love this place!

One of the great bars of the old town, it has a nice mix of locals and tourists and always has a welcoming atmosphere. There is clearly a very talented chef in the kitchen so you can't go wrong with anything on the board. The Carrilleras was delicious.

Cider bar
Zapiain is a renowned cider house located in the suburb of Astigarraga, near San Sebastian. Dating back to 1542, it offers an authentic Basque dining experience. Visitors can savor home-produced cider from 15,000-liter chestnut wood barrels alongside a delectable array of dishes including salt-cod tortilla, chargrilled T-bone steak, and apple paste with sheep's cheese and walnuts for dessert.
Most authentic cider house treat that you can find in San Sebastian. My newfound Spanish friends were surprised to know that we discovered the spot that even locals might not know 😄 Sausages, salted cod omelet, codfish with peppers, and the best item - Basque txuleton steak 😋 All these awesome food washed down with Zapiain cider. And no it ain't the sweet stuff that you are used to. It's the refreshing, slightly vinegary taste that makes you keep going through your food. You get to know how drunk you are when you are not able to “catch” the cider in your glass during the pouring from the barrel. Best recommended reserving your slot way in advance as they are usually fully booked
Ben T — Google review
Even if you are not a fan of cider, the experience of this restaurant is still something that you would want to add to your list of things to do in San Sebastian. Enjoy an exceptional meal inside an actual cider cellar and sip your drink that is served directly from the barrels. By the way, there is no seating in this restaurant, just high tables
MenuPassport — Google review
Don't miss this place, such a friendly vibe. Delicious food and of course the cider 💗. Easy to grab a cab from SS/Donista.
Kristina H — Google review
Cider is not tasty, though the way of tasting and serving is a mice gimic. Stakes are excellent, but the rest of the food is not exciting. I believe that if the place is crowded, the experience can be much nicer than mine.

The best Basque cider house. It only opens in Cider season, from the 20th of January to the 30th of April.

go and experience a true basque meal. multi dishes are all fantastic - from the cod omelette to the cod loins, then the meat was melting off the bone. cheeses and txistorra, its all a culinary journey of exceptional quality. and do i have to mention the cider? tops!! i can drink it for breakfast. value is outstanding - you can't cook this at home for that price. this place is HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!!!! look to make a reservation as it fills up quick.

By far too expensive for what you get. Food was served while drinking cider in the basement, and was cold once we were back on the table. Very rude person at the cash point. Won't go there any more.

Ttvn-Ttvn Taberna is a spacious and well-lit pintxos bar in San Sebastian, offering a wide selection of delicious skewers and homemade dishes at affordable prices. The atmosphere has been renovated, which some find less appealing than its previous look. However, the friendly staff and elaborate variety of pintxos make it a great place to enjoy a relaxed dining experience.
We had a great time! Enjoyed the pinxtos and the conversation! Our server walked us through the whole process of the Iberian jamon and was so pleasant to speak with and spend our time!

We went here twice during our stay in Donostia. Good selection of cold and hot pintxos but also mains and raciones. The hot pintxos were excellent. Doesn't seem as busy as some of the other bars. Has a modern feel and is brightly lit, unlike some of the others in the area, but the food is great. We'll worth a visit, especially for lunch.

All the places we went to in San Sebastián were very nice. We ordered in our best Spanish, but here the waitress with the curly hair was just super rude. We felt very bad, but will not be treated this way. We had to leave. Didn’t have a chance to try the drinks and the food

I hate feeling like I got ripped off. And the way you know they want to rip you off? They won'tn show you with a bill and magically the amount they ask you for ends in a .00. Everywhere else when we had pintxos, they presented is with a bill at the end to pay and never did it end with a .00 and this was the most expensive.
