Beware of people who try to sell souvenirs and paint your body. They pretend it’s a freebie but will try to get as much as they can from you. Another advice, do not wear gold necklaces and such. Large groups or maybe with a guide is safer.

The history behind the construction is interesting, however it’s not a great place to go. Going up and down costs R$0,15 per visitor and the elevator is too crowded, hot as hell and smells sweat. Great view up there though.

Beautiful building and market by the marina. It’s worth a visit to browse through some souvenirs, however, little to no local and artisanal handicrafts. Also the vendors are quite pushy which ruined the shopping experience a little. In my opinion, there are other local vendors and artisanal shops around the city that offer better and unique handicrafts.

This is indeed one of the greatest and most know trademarks for anyone visiting Salvador for the first time. Currently, the market is passing by a renovation so its split in two different sections. But both have basically the same kind of products available. At first, I've thought this would be similar to São Paulo's Municipal Market; however, here you will find just two or three options of restaurants with most of the other places taken by souvenirs stores. It can be a great place if you're looking for this type of store but be attentive of the prices - you can similar items for huge price variance. Tip: things here are cheaper than most of the stores of Pelourinho. Extra tip: though the market itself may not be what you're expecting take the opportunity to visit the marine located a few steps of it. The view is stunning and a good place for nice photos.

Must stay in this area very happening and lively neighbourhood. Good food options not much option for vegetarians, feels save due to police nearby. Beach is amazing you can go anytime you want. Rentals bicycle and mini scooters wil be available.

The place is very beautiful. Once inside, everything is clean, the view is stunning, and you feel safe. However, the place should have security for tourists. The vendors outside, desperate for your money like hungry hyenas, made the experience unpleasant. They tried to paint us with their products and wouldn’t take “no” for an answer. It was truly a horrible experience. Therefore, I give the place a 2 out of 5.

The Barra's Lighthouse is a postcard of Salvador City, at beach with the same name , is the oldest in Brazil but is in a great conservation status. The visit worth cause the historical value, the beautiful neighborhood and the stunning views when you climb until the top! At the building of the old fort, we visited the museum that explain the History of the Lighthouse since the 16th Century and an interesting pictures exposition.

Nice beach but noisy and too many hawkers trying to sell you various kinds of items. I'd stay away from here and rather go to Rio Vermelho beach.

This is an amazing beach. In weekends they shirt down the street for people to explore the local community that does shows and performance. You will have everything you need with in a 2 min walk. You can rent chair and umbrella and order a bucket of beer with out leavening the sand. There are tons of stree venders with foods, drinks and stuff. As you travel please always be aware of the area your in. Do not take your valuables and leave them on the beach unattended.

Beautiful beach, clean, but a bit crowded, specially on high season you could hardly find a spot, since it is not that big.

A wonderful & magical place. The scenery is beautiful and the people are colorful. At the end of the day, a cold beer and a well made Acaraje, standing along the wall of the beach front watching the sunset is a scene that bring tranquility and peace.

Love a free museum! We went on a Saturday and the only part open was downstairs. I’m not clear on whether we came back, other parts would be open. It was fun to see the art on display, but even more fun to see the workroom with art classes going on. Got a vegan brownie at the cafe outside and saw that there would be a samba festival that night at a stage that was being setup. Seems like a great hub of activities

Disappointing, I would say. It's one small gallery, literally one room that exhibits at the moment some photógrafs, some garments and some pictures. Then there is one other room with the history (solo Portuguese). And one tiny chapel, that also exhibits some garments. The cafe is alright, the coffee is below average quality. It's free, but not worth a extra visit, I say. If you are in the area, have a look for 15min.

After checking the website, we decided to visit the museum. However when we arrived the main building was closed, because of setting up a new exposition. No mention of this at all. There was a small exposition in a cellar which really wasn't worth the trip. Overall the helpfulness of people working there wasn't great.

If you’re a literature lover, this is a must-see. The museum offers a beautiful journey through Jorge Amado’s life and writings, set in a charming house right in the heart of Pelourinho. It’s a pity that all the exhibits are only in Portuguese, considering how much Jorge Amado traveled and how beloved he was around the world. Still, it’s a lovely and inspiring visit. The museum also has a great view of the city below.

One of the best museums in Pelourinho. The history inside and art are beautiful. There is a small Cafe but one of the best things is the gift shop where you can buy reproductions of much of the art. A recent addition is the top floor that overlooks the city.

this building is so so beautiful. The courtyard is covered in tiles that are donated by the portugese king in 1795 (according to my guide), and the inside is covered in gold. I cant even begin to describe it. There are so many statures and sculptures , its breaktaking. Theres also a cemetery of some sort where some ancient bones lay. I heard it also contains the living quarters for some reverened father. This place was really beautiful and its a must see if you ever are in Salvador

Gorgeous and interesting Church We stumbled across this during our walk around Pelourinho and what a gem it is. There were flowers laid down the aisle of the chapel so I assume there was soon to be a wedding there and it looked truly stunning. Walking around to can go into the Throne Room and Crypts followed by other rooms with information and artifacts. Just after the Crypts there was an outside area but we didn't venture out there as it seemed this was the reception area with the same flowers as the Chapel so likely for the wedding but it was gorgeous.

Igreja e convento de Sao Francisco De Asis is a highly recommended stop on your next visit to Pelourinho Salvador. It's stunning from the outside and lights up beautifully at night. The real beauty however is seen in the fine detailing and elaborate use of gold on the inside. The cost to enter is only R$5 / US$1( in March 2022 ), a price thats more than worth it. The pictures really don't do it justice. They don't provide tour guides so I would advise visiting as a part of a walking tour of pelourinho, to get details on the history. Definitely add it to your list of must do in salvador.

It is a baroque church, a masterpiece! The interior is breathtaking! Totally covered by with gold-colored wood, magnificent. While the cloister is completely covered with a cilco of white and blue mosaics that put in drawings of the judgments of Horace. Definitely worth the visit. The cost is 15 Brazilian Real, less than 3 dollars.

Unfortunately, this is a museum that could likely be skipped if you are pressed for time. However, it is free so if you are passing by I would think it is worth dropping into. The best thing is the view. There is no WiFi. Perhaps check the exhibitions prior to visiting to see if it is worth a visit for you.

They have cheap but nice jazz concerts at Saturdays. Take a cab or an uber to came here. Avoid cars once there's no much space to park and there's a lot of people offering their "services" to take care of yours.

No need to say that this is one of the most beautiful spots in Salvador. The sitio features a brand new - and small - charming cinema for art movies. The Chapel itself has been recently renewed and now counts with a fixed exhibition.

Some interesting pieces here and there, but most of it was not great. Even though it was free today, I would not recommend it to others. There is no clear order for walking around. The audio tour made no sense order wise and a lot of the time it was just describing what you see. There is a lot of nonsensical art trying to be deep. A bit disappointed from the exhibition, I expected a bit more storytelling. But in general worth it to risk a look. A thing of 30 mins. Be aware that the videos and social media posts might mislead your expectations. Inform yourself in terms of which exhibition they present in the time period you visit. I miss more local artists, local stories, historical examples. I mainly saw artists from the US.

Beautiful building with great views of the sea. Only one or two rooms are accessible with small exhibitions. The grand staircases and numerous other rooms not fulfilling their potential.

Interesting museum about the Carnaval in Salvador. Lovely display of carnaval costumes, figurines, pictures and masks. There’s a nice little restaurant on the terrace with a view of Pelourinho and baía de todos os santos.

This place is amazing. The museum part is well cared for, displaying lots of carnaval's history, the outfits worn by famous people and the best of the best performances. The rooftop not only serves delicious coffee, they also serve food. We had the bobó de camarão. It was amazing! The staff is super friendly.

The museum is really well kept and in great condition. The video clips are informative and are offered in English as well which is useful if you can't understand Portuguese. Because the videos are long, it would be good if they had benches so people can sit and watch, we ended sitting on the floor. Also, the music in the museum is too loud considering you have to listen to a video. My data wasn’t working well inside and there was no wifi, which can be fixed. The sound on some of the videos would drop here and there, not sure if it is because of the data connection.

2 out of 3 exhibition rooms were closed. There is no wifi available for visitants, but the audioguides depend on QR codes. There is no inertnet conmection inside the museum, so basically they told us to listen everything after we leave. Still we were asekd to pay the full price... we left after 7 minutes

Hard to find parking. However, It is a beautiful place to check out. I hear sunsets are amazing here. I was not able to catch one while i was there. There is a nice little bar that your able to sit and take some drinks and enjoy the ocean. :) Try to find a a good spot and relax for a bit.

Other reviewers have remarked that parking can be difficult but honestly, I never have that problem; I just pay a few reais to the attendant working nearby and go on with my day. There's normally someone leaving and I can snag their spot. (I also rarely if ever go on weekends). There's a bar where you can grab a drink, as well as a drink stand (they accept cash & Pix!) - I highly recommend grabbing a caldo de cana and watching the sunset from here.

The place itself is nice, but I got robbed here. Just after leaving the hill/morro, when going back on the pedestrian/bike way, a guy stood before me and jumped on me to ripped off my necklaces. Hopefully that's all he take of me. It was noon, 11am, full sun, and witnesses around, it didn't stop him. A guy from the same hostel as me got robbed at the exact same place, at midnight, guys pointing a gun at him, he had to give everything. Don't go there with valuable things, or don't go at all

It is nice and comfortable to walk to the statue. The steps were low and there was signing all over. The view is wonderful to the Spanish point until the Barra Lighthouse. The view of the avenue is clean. Many cocoanut trees in the garden.

A wonderful and unforgettable experience exploring this market. Lots of little stalls with locals selling local produce, handicrafts, fresh seafood and traditional ingredients. We also had the chance to try the local delicacy called Abará which was freshly made and delicious! The prices are very reasonable and cheaper than anywhere I’ve seen in Salvador. Vendors don’t pester you to buy and offer free samples.

The Fort itself is nothing special. Been recently refurbished and now has a small art exhibition (Carybé). Free to visit the building but not the art. View to the sea is great.

November 2023, I visit the museum during it's first exhibition since reopening after Covid shutdown. The exhibit was so spectacular i visited 2 days in a row.

It is a a tiny museum with very little history or display on issues like slave trade, uprisings or freedom. There are some beautiful murals of the orishàs, with little explanation. Staff did not demonstrate much interest. There is so much more they can do to make this an excellent museum.

Really small museum - only two rooms. Has some nice artifacts but not a lot of information (would not recommend for foreign tourists as all info is in portuguese). Entry is 10reis in cash only.

To get there from the center is quite easy. However, do not rely on google maps or moovit in terms of the bus number (many buses have no number) or the bus stop to get on (as many drivers did not stop for me as it was not the right one) or even the route. Ask many people and look for a bus sign that states it is a stop. Many buses don't display numbers, and if they do, the number switches quickly that you may not have the time to see it from far to hail it down!

This happened on July 3rd, 2025: We arrived an hour before sunset and someone offered us a table and 2 chairs by the Itapuã beach with the promise to charge ONLY consumption, so we accepted. At the end, they brought us a bill with an extra 100 reals for “service”. The 1st food menu they showed us did not mention the charge, but the last one did. Also, that charge was not agreed verbally. We ended up paying the extra $18 dllsfor 60 minutes there. The police across the street was not helpful, as they suggested to go to a consumer affairs office.

We discovered the beach through Vinicius de Moraes’ songs. At first, we thought it would be amazing and just like the music, but we got disappointed. The beach was too crowded, had really loud and mixed music from different kiosks, not worth prices, not so good smelling, and there were tiny seaweeds all over the coast. The Praia de Itapuã is a palm-fringed, sandy beach & sea-turtle nesting spot with water sports & food/drink stands. I had to visit here because of the Brazilian song “Tarde em Itapoa” (by Toquinho & Vinícius de Moraes)—if you’ve never heard it, look it up (you will probably love it). Itapuã is a neighborhood in the north part of the city of Salvador in the state of Bahia, which is famous for its culture, cuisine, history and architecture. If you’re in Salvador, you should come up to see this famous beach, the nearby lighthouse and the great restaurants. You won’t be disappointed.
