Farol da Barra Beach is a lively destination popular for swimming and sunbathing. It is home to the St. Anthony Fort and the historic Farol da Barra lighthouse, where Amerigo Vespucci arrived in 1501. The beach offers stunning views of All Saints Bay and the city, with amenities such as eateries, beach umbrellas, and loungers for rent.
My wife added this place to our list when we visited Salvador — and we’re glad she did. The lighthouse and old fortress are full of history, and there’s a great little surprise on the rooftop: a spot where you can enjoy tasty Brazilian food and drinks. If you go at the right time, the sunset view is absolutely unforgettable.

Must stay in this area very happening and lively neighbourhood. Good food options not much option for vegetarians, feels save due to police nearby. Beach is amazing you can go anytime you want. Rentals bicycle and mini scooters wil be available.
Farhat J — Google review
I love this place! It’s stunning, good for a walk and talk. I just take care always because one time someone tried to stolen my neckless and hurted me. Hopefully my friends could stop the guy and the drivers around helped as well.
Carolinebritor — Google review
Well, it’s a simple lighthouse but when the sun is setting, you are gonna enjoy the view and obviously by walking on the same boulevard you get plenty of things to eat and it’s nice

Beautiful place! Historical and very famous in carnival days!

I recommend taking Acarajé and seeing the sunset at Farol da Barra.

The Barra's Lighthouse is a postcard of Salvador City, at beach with the same name , is the oldest in Brazil but is in a great conservation status. The visit worth cause the historical value, the beautiful neighborhood and the stunning views when you climb until the top! At the building of the old fort, we visited the museum that explain the History of the Lighthouse since the 16th Century and an interesting pictures exposition.

Beach
Nature & Parks
Porto da Barra Beach is a picturesque gem nestled in Salvador, known for its tranquil waters that beckon both swimmers and sunbathers alike. This vibrant beach not only offers a perfect spot to soak up the sun but also serves as a historical landmark, being the site of Bahia's original European settlement. The surrounding neighborhood buzzes with life, attracting both locals and visitors who come to enjoy refreshing drinks while watching breathtaking sunsets over the bay.
Might be a long overdue review, but hands down one of the best beach waters I have been to. The pictures are from 2013, I've noticed they have bikes and scooters now. No matter where you are at pay attention to your surroundings. Local markets and restaurants near the strip. Not sure if the internet cafe shop is still there it's on the main strip a few shops down from the main entrance to the beach. If you are staying local, the grocery store is about a 15 min away walking. Not sure if they still do this on the beach, it's hard to think they do not, but ... once the sun is completely set (which looks surreal) it's the sun disappearing into the horizon of the beach ....people clap. It's the end of the day and you made it to see the sun go down.
Miguelina A — Google review
If you like to enjoy life, this beach is the place for you!! Music, alcohol, food, friends, love, happiness etc etc
Laura X — Google review
Nice beach but noisy and too many hawkers trying to sell you various kinds of items. I'd stay away from here and rather go to Rio Vermelho beach.
Jeet B — Google review
This is an amazing beach. In weekends they shirt down the street for people to explore the local community that does shows and performance. You will have everything you need with in a 2 min walk. You can rent chair and umbrella and order a bucket of beer with out leavening the sand. There are tons of stree venders with foods, drinks and stuff. As you travel please always be aware of the area your in. Do not take your valuables and leave them on the beach unattended.
Alyssa H — Google review
Beautiful beach, clean, but a bit crowded, specially on high season you could hardly find a spot, since it is not that big.
Lucas K — Google review
A wonderful & magical place. The scenery is beautiful and the people are colorful. At the end of the day, a cold beer and a well made Acaraje, standing along the wall of the beach front watching the sunset is a scene that bring tranquility and peace.
John N — Google review
Great water! Nice place to hang out avoid weekend cause it gets crowded and people smoking weed made me sick!

The Museu Náutico da Bahia, located at the Farol da Barra lighthouse in Salvador, Brazil, is a hidden gem that offers more than just scenic views. Housed within the lighthouse, this museum showcases a valuable collection of underwater archaeological finds, navigation instruments, nautical signaling artifacts, models and miniatures of various vessels. The permanent exhibition delves into the geography, history, anthropology and culture of the All Saints Bay.
Amazing! Incredible! So much history, a lot of interesting things to see, and even a cafe/restaurant inside. I highly suggest climbing to the top of the lighthouse (if you can handle the steps)

Stunning views of the city and easily one of the most beautiful spots in Salvador. It’s a popular destination for both locals and visitors, and for good reason. A great area to stroll around, take in the scenery, and enjoy the vibrant atmosphere.

Historical building with a great value by itself, the place also offers great views for pictures and sightseeing. Many people walking and doing sports at all times. Nice place like the are that around, try to visit early morning to avoid the massive tourist but recommend. It’s a nice place to take a walk around the beach

Nice area to walk to but I would say go during the day for sure. The area doesn’t seem great at night but there are a lot of police around. We didn’t get to go inside but was nice to see up close. People will try non stop to sell you things so just be prepared to say no lol

Park
Nestled in the scenic Onida district, the Salvador Zoo and Botanical Park is a delightful urban oasis that offers an engaging experience for families visiting Salvador. Established in 1958, this expansive park spans around 250,000 square meters and serves as both a leisure spot and an ecological refuge. Home to over 1,500 animals representing more than 150 species—primarily from Brazil—the zoo showcases the rich biodiversity of South America.
5 stars because it is free, decent animals, nice tree/landscape, easy and clear trail directions, water, lots of washrooms, and much more. Don't know why it should be less as it is free and you can take amazing landscaping views - check pics! I took some of the most beautiful nature pics (maybe not the animals) that i've seen! Do not rely on google Maps or moovit as the entrance for pedestrian is easily accessed by the 2nd entrance (follow my review as I updated the entrance). You can get off the wrong stop and walk 1 hour to get there. I don't suggest the stop Google provides as it involves walking in not recommended streets (many stopped me and took me to enter the second entrance not listed on the map).
Antoine A — Google review
An okay zoo. As of November 2024, about 1/3 is closed for renovations. They have several species of monkeys, foxes, turtles, two hippos and one zebra. A few snack vendors available. Free. NOTE: the entrance by the university is currently closed for renovations, only the entrance by the favela is open. It's still accesible by walking past the closed entrance and up the hill. Feels sketchy though; I'd recommend taking an Uber. Also, Google maps will tell you to walk through the favela to access the main entrance; I'd recommend against that.
Josiah W — Google review
Very nice place, highly recommend!!! And I saw what food does animals eat , I think they live a good life 👌. Oh , and it is for free
Igor D — Google review
Lots of cool animals, especially native species to Brazil. There’s at least one huge iguana that roams free which is pretty cool. There are also free roaming monkeys and of course peacocks. The best part is that it’s free.
Angus B — Google review

Christian H — Google review
Lindo!
Maria C — Google review
I feel like this zoo has so much potential but now it's a sad place. Looks like animals don't have enough space and they seem stressed.
Lubov G — Google review
There were many interesting animals and they seem well cared for and comfortable. The paths were well marked and the maintenance was above the normal. Even the bathrooms were clean and useable. If you go during the say many of the animals are nocturnal so you may not see all the animals we wish to see. The unfortunate part is they close at 18:00. It would be highly recommended if they could provide a night tour. They may see better revenues.

The Afro-Brazilian Museum UFBA, located in Pelourinho inside the University, offers a captivating exploration of the history and cultural influence of Africans in Bahia. The museum's extensive collection includes photographs and artifacts that shed light on the impact of the slave trade and the development of Brazilian culture. Visitors can gain valuable insights into the ethnic and racial origins of Brazil while exploring this enriching space.
Amazing Carybé exposition! The education team has a lot of knowledge and are really sweet. They are also bilingual which really helps!
Ted S — Google review
This is a rather small history of African culture....has virtually nothing to do with the Brazilian experience, slavery etc. A lot of descriptions alcan only be seen with black light and are almost impossible to read. Very unfriendly trans person at reception.
Rodney W — Google review
November 2023, I visit the museum during it's first exhibition since reopening after Covid shutdown. The exhibit was so spectacular i visited 2 days in a row.
Lorenza C — Google review
It is a a tiny museum with very little history or display on issues like slave trade, uprisings or freedom. There are some beautiful murals of the orishàs, with little explanation. Staff did not demonstrate much interest. There is so much more they can do to make this an excellent museum.
Savio C — Google review
Really small museum - only two rooms. Has some nice artifacts but not a lot of information (would not recommend for foreign tourists as all info is in portuguese). Entry is 10reis in cash only.
Jade B — Google review
The Carybé panels are amazing.
Kevin C — Google review
I dont think this should be called an Afro-Brazilian museum. It has no mention of slavery, afrobrasilian culture (besides religious relics), afrobrasilian social and political movements, famous black individuals, etc. Very disappointing in the city with more Afro-Brazilians than anywhere else. The museum should be renamed, closed or completely redone.
Lora N — Google review
Origins of this institution we're discussed as early as 1946. Located in the 1970s in this central historical district of Pelorinho, it's currently housed in a majestic facility used by Federal University of Bahia. The museum itself is small not taking long to visit. Very rich worthwhile display with English text available.

A must-visit dining spot is Preta Restaurante, known for its magical ambiance created from recycled materials and serving fresh-caught seafood dishes.
Wonderful place, like in a dream. You can rent a boat to go on island.
Lucian I — Google review
The island is perfect and very well preserved. Everything is clean and nice (unfortunately, humanity still leave bottle at some places) Make sure you book a tour less touristic with visit of paramana, loreto and other beaches than only one beach. Avoid as possible the restaurant they gonna try to assign you on the boat. They are very aggressive when you arrive on the island by “offering” you an umbrella and taking your order (but you still have to wait when you’ll go..). Decline politely and choose the place you want.

I so wanted to see the island but it's privately owned so no tourists allowed. Beautiful view and bird sounds. Swimming is permitted. A scene out of a movie.

A very big mall where you will be able to find almost everything. ⭐ They currently have a dinosaur exhibit which children seemed to enjoy a lot. ⭐ It is a very extensive mall with a lot of shops. ⭐ There are maps placed in a few locations which even give you routes to the shops you'd like to visit. ⭐ A lot of restaurants to choose from at the food court ⭐ Easy and fast access to wifi! However, sometimes the maps did not work or did not show the shops on other floors. The website, at least on mobile was a little broken, so it is easy to get lost in there

Salvador Shopping is a modern, spacious mall offering a vast array of stores, from big brands to local finds. You'll also discover diverse dining options and entertainment. It's well-kept, easy to navigate, and provides good amenities. Expect crowds at peak times, but overall, it's a top spot for retail and leisure in Salvador.

A high end shopping center with some big names like Hugo boss and Adidas among others. Very friendly, great clean services and a good variety of things for kids and toddlers. It's not artistically amazing or anything like that and does not need to be. They often hold interesting exhibitions here though. Prices are a little higher for everything here but it's deserved

Art museum
The Palace of Arts, also known as Palacete das Artes Rodin Bahia, is a captivating art museum in Salvador that seamlessly blends a 1912 mansion with a modern wing and an enchanting garden adorned with works by Rodin. The historic mansion hosts temporary exhibitions featuring modern and contemporary artists, along with a remarkable display of 62 plaster pieces by Auguste Rodin. Additionally, the space offers courses, workshops, and events tailored for scholars and art enthusiasts.
Very cool space indeed. Great to see Bahia cultivating this kind of high quality cultural and artistic space. Clean, so much to experience and family friendly.. It would be great to see this type of space deeper in the favelas also.
Stephen E — Google review
Very cool, small but not too small museum. Free entry and some exhibitions to see. The house itself is a beautiful villa and the garden around it gives much to explore as well. The mostly contemporary art ist interesting and often actually funny. I recommend for a 30-60min visit for sure. Cafe available as well.
Valentin P — Google review
The location is beautiful, with a colonial mansion on front and a modern wing added at the bag. The expositions in the wing were multimedia, very well installed and interesting. Unfortunately, mist of the rooms in the mansion were under renovation and only saw two cute showings. There is a nice looking cafe in between both buildings, but I did not try it. I visited it in the early afternoon, I think they have special programming for the night, and the lights designs may make the outdoors look very appealing.

The park was established in 1993 and is home to Casa da Musica, a cultural landmark in Salvador. While some visitors find it to be a quiet and relaxing place with beautiful views, others note that the water in the lagoon is diminishing.

A Lagoa do Abaeté! A famous place in the folclore of Salvador, once a fishing village, it's now kind of a postcard. The sand isn't as clean as it looks on photos and the bairro is not the safest.
Eddie Z — Google review
Since the COVID pandemic, this attraction has a lot less tourists. Main entry and shops are closed/abandoned. Still a natural beauty and free entry to swim or use the dunes. Take a board and slide down the sand hills kr picnic under a tree.

This was a quick stop. The water in the lagoon is disappearing, there are a few horses, one had died a d there was not much going on. This is not a must see, but cool to fill time if you happen to be in the area. Consider checking it out by car (there are police around but maybe hanging alone as the sun goes down wouldn't be great) then being on your way.

Parque Metropolitano de Pituaçu is an urban green space that offers various activities such as walking trails, pedal boating on a lake, and outdoor sculptures. It is a pleasant park to explore on rented bicycles and is particularly suitable for families with children. The park provides visible security, creating a safe environment for visitors. One of its highlights is the opportunity to canoe or use "swan like" pedal floats on the lake.
Linda!!!! Oasis & a treasure to explore in Salvador ✨️ 🇧🇷

Nice park to drive around on bycikles that you can rent on a site. Great to spend afternoon with family and kids. There was visible security through the park so it feels safe. Park has also a lake that you can explore on canoe or "swan like" pedal floats. If you like modern art and sculptures, it is a great place to see artwork of Brazilian sculptor Mario Cravo. Unfortunately the sculptures have seen better days, so I would not wait to see these too long..

(Translated by Google) I've been going to Lôro's beach shack for years and really like the service. We took advantage of menu week to try the restaurant at the marina with high expectations, knowing the quality of Lôro's service. However, it wasn't as usual. Initially, when the restaurant was empty, the service was very good. However, as the place filled up, it seemed like there were few waiters. The drinks we ordered came out pretty quickly (I ordered a mojito—I regretted it—the mint leaves were crushed, ruining the drink's freshness, and it was unpleasant to drink the leaf pieces). The caipiroskas were well-made and delicious. Our lunch order arrived relatively quickly, but dessert took a long time. I asked for the bill three times from three different waiters, and it still took a long time. I didn't like the quality of the dishes, especially the dessert. Lunch was a sun-dried meat (it was quite salty), with fried banana, which was delicious, and mashed cassava, which was also delicious. The brownie for dessert was very hard, dry, and cold. The ice cream was okay. Nothing spectacular. The shrimp pastries as a starter are a plus. Very tasty and well-filled. The atmosphere is very cool, fresh, with a view of the bay, and pleasant background music, but if the service doesn't improve, it will be difficult to return. This is a recommendation. As caipiroskas estavam bem feitas e gostosas.
Lais O — Google review
(Translated by Google) The dinner wasn't all that great, completely tasteless, and the side dish came with too much rice, making it very bland as it added no flavor to the meal. However, the ambiance is beautiful. The only truly delicious things were the cod fritters and the drink; everything else was totally uninspired. I've eaten at simpler places that were 100 times better. For me it the best mall in town, the only problem is that I don't understand why they charge for parking, no one parks there to go someplace else because there's basically nothing around. Salvador shopping I can understand, there's a lot of offices around, but this one is in the middle of nowhere, people would park in alphaville rather that there, so that's annoying

I paid 10 reais on an umbrella, and drank beer worth 8 on average, water costs around 4 reais, cheap snacks. Worth the trip. Beautiful beach, twenty-six miles from the center of Salvador, with an extensive strip of sand, therefore, in several points, quite deserted, even in high season. The Praia de Itapua is a beautiful and sandy beach that's perfect for couples. It's lined with palm trees, has great water sports and food/drink stands, and is only about 12.5 miles from downtown Salvador.
This beach is highly recommended and popular among local people. The prices are affordable and you have a very nice view of the other part of Salvador. The public transport is a bit tricky, as you should have travel card or cash with you otherwise you cannot pay with your credit or debit card on the buses
Szabolcs K — Google review
To get there from the center is quite easy. However, do not rely on google maps or moovit in terms of the bus number (many buses have no number) or the bus stop to get on (as many drivers did not stop for me as it was not the right one) or even the route. Ask many people and look for a bus sign that states it is a stop. Many buses don't display numbers, and if they do, the number switches quickly that you may not have the time to see it from far to hail it down!

This happened on July 3rd, 2025: We arrived an hour before sunset and someone offered us a table and 2 chairs by the Itapuã beach with the promise to charge ONLY consumption, so we accepted. At the end, they brought us a bill with an extra 100 reals for “service”. The 1st food menu they showed us did not mention the charge, but the last one did. Also, that charge was not agreed verbally. We ended up paying the extra $18 dllsfor 60 minutes there. The police across the street was not helpful, as they suggested to go to a consumer affairs office.

We discovered the beach through Vinicius de Moraes’ songs. At first, we thought it would be amazing and just like the music, but we got disappointed. The beach was too crowded, had really loud and mixed music from different kiosks, not worth prices, not so good smelling, and there were tiny seaweeds all over the coast. At least, the people were nice to us.

The Praia de Itapuã is a palm-fringed, sandy beach & sea-turtle nesting spot with water sports & food/drink stands. I had to visit here because of the Brazilian song “Tarde em Itapoa” (by Toquinho & Vinícius de Moraes)—if you’ve never heard it, look it up (you will probably love it). Itapuã is a neighborhood in the north part of the city of Salvador in the state of Bahia, which is famous for its culture, cuisine, history and architecture. Absolutely beautiful waves! Big enough to surf. Some parts of the beach are cleaner than others; don't let that deter you. I went on a Monday afternoon and I practically had the whole place to myself. Contrary to other beaches, there's no one to harass you and ask if you want to buy anything. Praia de Amaralina is a popular spot known for its strong waves, making it a favorite among surfers. The beach also allows sport fishing and features a long promenade that serves as a jogging track. Divided into sections, the right side attracts surfers while the left side offers quiet coves for sunbathers. Additionally, the area boasts other nearby beaches with soft sands and good water quality, providing various options for beach enthusiasts.
It's a good place for riding and working out!

Very pretty to spend New year's Eve 🤠 all dressed in white. Just be aware it's not really for people who drink non-alcoholic beverages. You'll only get water :)

(Translated by Google) Very beautiful beach, WONDERFUL view, calm waves. The lack of security is significant, especially since there's a dangerous neighborhood nearby. People go there on weekends after 2 p.m., where there are a lot of muggings. I recommend going in the morning to watch the sunrise, but spending too much time there is not recommended because it's dangerous!

(Translated by Google) Tranquility and peace! A great place to enjoy the sea. The stretch of sand is huge and provides a beautiful view of the open sea. Starting the year on this beach was the best thing I did 😍 I loved it so much. I would definitely go back! (Original) Tranquilidade e muita paz!

(Translated by Google) A good beach. The only thing I found bad about the central beaches of Salvador is that there are a lot of rocks and reefs, making it difficult to swim in the sea without the risk of getting hurt on a rock. None of the beaches I visited in Salvador are the best places for safe swimming. In other states, Sergipe and Aracaju, the beaches are better for swimming in the sea. But I still believe that the best beaches are in Guarujá and São Paulo, especially the beaches in gated communities that anyone can access. But for relaxing, enjoying a cold one and dipping your feet in the salt water, all of the beaches are excellent. (Original) Uma boa praia.

(Translated by Google) The beach is quite empty; for those who want a peaceful and quiet place, in contact with nature, this is the spot. There are about 2 or 3 stalls along the beach, but we only had coconut water. Depending on the location, it's advisable to bring snacks, drinks, and water. In the stretch between the parking lot and the beach, there are some small freshwater pools with lots of little fish and warm water. Praia da Penha, located on the south side of Salvador, offers a delightful beach experience with calm waters and warm temperatures. The view is stunning, featuring Morro da Christo in the center of the photo and Farol da Barra on the horizon. While there are several options for bars and restaurants along the seafront, some visitors have noted a lack of infrastructure such as trashcans and bathrooms. Additionally, at times it may appear dirty due to litter and seaweed.

(Translated by Google) With a wide stretch of soft white sand, the sea here has no waves. It is a huge little pool that attracts many families with children. The water had a lot of seaweed when I went. People come by selling ready-made snacks (passinja, acarajé, chips, etc.) and you see them and buy them right away. It is a great place to watch the sunset. Like most beaches in Salvador, there is waste on the sand (caps, straws, plastic cups and, worse still, wooden skewers).
