Mercado Modelo is a popular market in Salvador, featuring over 250 shops offering a variety of arts, crafts, and souvenirs. The large yellow building housing the market is an example of neoclassical architecture and inside, elegant stone arches crown the alleys and streets. Visitors can also enjoy a view of the Bay of All Saints from a huge curved balcony covered in umbrellas.
Great tourist spot. Lots of little shops for souvenirs and food. There is a bigger restaurant overlooking the ocean. In the area are a few museums to visit. The large elevator is steps away. We came back here several times because there are so many things to do. We felt safe and they kept the area clean.

Traditional port in Salvador. Lots of little shops to buy useless memorabilia for your house, family and friends. Beautiful view of the port and sunset from the second floor restaurant/bar - makes it worth the trip.
Henry G — Google review
Beautiful building and market by the marina. It’s worth a visit to browse through some souvenirs, however, little to no local and artisanal handicrafts. Also the vendors are quite pushy which ruined the shopping experience a little. In my opinion, there are other local vendors and artisanal shops around the city that offer better and unique handicrafts.
Randall R — Google review
Surprise experience that turned out to be the highlight of my day in the area. Amazing visual experience. Totally worth the short wait on the day I visited.
Rod N — Google review
Very touristy and a lot of stalls which sell exactly the same items. Nothing wow! Very nice terrace.
Tamara C — Google review
Amazing ! Lots of choice and everyone is very friendly. Lots of security too.
Melis R — Google review
This is indeed one of the greatest and most know trademarks for anyone visiting Salvador for the first time. Currently, the market is passing by a renovation so its split in two different sections. But both have basically the same kind of products available. At first, I've thought this would be similar to São Paulo's Municipal Market; however, here you will find just two or three options of restaurants with most of the other places taken by souvenirs stores. It can be a great place if you're looking for this type of store but be attentive of the prices - you can similar items for huge price variance. Tip: things here are cheaper than most of the stores of Pelourinho. Extra tip: though the market itself may not be what you're expecting take the opportunity to visit the marine located a few steps of it. The view is stunning and a good place for nice photos.

The Elevador Lacerda is a historic art deco elevator that provides scenic views while connecting the upper and lower parts of Salvador. It offers a convenient and affordable way to explore the old city center, with taxis, buses, and foot travel also being viable options. This iconic elevator was erected in the mid to late 1800s and showcases impressive Art Deco design from additional work done in the early 20th century.
It's a small pastry and ice cream shop situated right next to the elevator. I have to admit that the ice creams are delicious, generously served, and really cheap. You may choose to get them in a cone or a cup. The 'Pave' flavor is amazing! Pave is a Brazilian cake-like dessert.
Arkadiusz J — Google review
The City around the elevator is dangerous. The elevator looks good, but it's not spectacular to use.
Matheus Z — Google review
A tourist attraction with a lot of history. ⭐ The elevator is very fast and takes you to the upper city in a few seconds ⭐ We did not pay an entrance fee and did not have to wait in a queue ⭐ Nothing else to say or to do. Very straightforward. It is an elevator after all. But fun nonetheless! Also, prices for souvenirs in the upper city are cheaper than at Mercado Modelo!
B. N — Google review
Lacerda Elevator was the first urban elevator in the world when it opened on December 8, 1873 the 63 meters tall elevator takes you from lower town to upper town. A major tourist attractions and photo spot of Salvador. Great views of the bay and the governors palace.
Yrjö O — Google review
Beware of people who try to sell souvenirs and paint your body. They pretend it’s a freebie but will try to get as much as they can from you. Another advice, do not wear gold necklaces and such. Large groups or maybe with a guide is safer.
Rodrigo A — Google review
The history behind the construction is interesting, however it’s not a great place to go. Going up and down costs R$0,15 per visitor and the elevator is too crowded, hot as hell and smells sweat. Great view up there though.
Enzo — Google review
It's very cheap at only R$0.15, and conveniently located. It facilitates a 10 minute walk from the ferry to Pelourinho or from Pelourinho to the market. There may be a bit of a line depending on the time of day that you visit. Can also get a bit hot during the day. There are stunning views from the top, a very popular photo op spot, as well as a famous ice cream shop help you beat the heat. Can't miss it on a visit to Salvador and I definitely recommend taking it at least once.
Andre W — Google review
Better one to dine in. Beautiful ambient. Sitting area overlooking sun set and Mercado Modelo. It is right at exit of the upper level of Elevator. Best time to have ice cream is during sun set

Teatro Castro Alves is a renowned performing arts venue in Salvador, home to the Bahian Symphony Orchestra and the Bale de Castro Alves. Despite facing a major fire before its inauguration in 1958, it finally opened to the public in 1967. The theater boasts excellent audio-visual technology and features original artwork based on Castro Alves's famous poem about the horrors of the slave trade.
Fantastic venue is Salvador De Bahia with high quality productions. Get your tickets early.
Marco C — Google review
Disappointing. Given the fact that Castro Alves is one of the greatest Brazilian poets the teather should do more to honour his memory. There is no guided tour and there is only a small collection of superb costumes from previous shows.

The original Carmelite church was built in the late 16th century but was later rebuilt after a fire.

O Cravinho is a renowned bar situated in the Pelourinho neighborhood, known for crafting its own unique spirits for over 36 years. Founded by Julival Santos in 1987, the bar offers a variety of flavored cachacas, including the popular Cravinho and Senzala cocktails. With four distinct spaces dedicated to savoring quality drinks, O Cravinho Bar is a must-visit destination in Salvador's historic district.
You should definitely visit to try a few different flavors of cachaca - you can get “shots” of cachaca and it’s really cheap. Frequented by locals which is nice, doesn’t feel very touristy. I didn’t try the food.

Awesome authentic experience in the old town of Salvador. Lively crowd friendly waiters and cheap prices. Their house made cachaca blend is tasty and customary to chase with an ice cold beer. Sit down or hang by the counter and if hungry consider the shrimp-some of the best we’ve ever had

Kris and I LOVE this place. When we went to Salvador in 2017, we went there 3, maybe 4 times. The service is spectacular, and the cachaças are even better. I loved the wine cachaça. São Marcelo Fort is a circular fortress constructed on a reef during the 17th century, serving as both a sea fort and former prison. Its unique doughnut shape has earned it the nickname "belly button of the world" by Brazilian author Jorge Amado. Located near Terminal Maritimo in Bahia, this historical site showcases stunning architecture and serves as a reminder of Brazil's rich cultural past.

São Marcelo Fort, formally known as Forte de Nossa Senhora do Pópulo e São Marcelo is located in Salvador in Bahia, Brazil. It is located in small bit of land off the coast in the Baía de Todos os Santos. Standing on a small bank of reefs about 300 metres (980 ft) from the coast, it is one of two forts separated by water from land in Brazil, the other being the Fort Tamandaré da Laje Tamandaré in Rio de Janeiro. It is the only cylindrical fort in Brazil. Its design follows those of Castel Sant'Angelo in Italy and São Lourenço do Bugio Fort in Portugal. It is popularly known as the "Forte do Mar" (Fort of the Sea). It was built to protect the important port city Salvador from threats; the city had the largest number of forts during the colonial period of Brazil

Interesting museum about the Carnaval in Salvador. Lovely display of carnaval costumes, figurines, pictures and masks. There’s a nice little restaurant on the terrace with a view of Pelourinho and baía de todos os santos.
Randall R — Google review
This place is amazing. The museum part is well cared for, displaying lots of carnaval's history, the outfits worn by famous people and the best of the best performances. The rooftop not only serves delicious coffee, they also serve food. We had the bobó de camarão. It was amazing! The staff is super friendly.

The museum is really well kept and in great condition. The video clips are informative and are offered in English as well which is useful if you can't understand Portuguese. Because the videos are long, it would be good if they had benches so people can sit and watch, we ended sitting on the floor. Also, the music in the museum is too loud considering you have to listen to a video. My data wasn’t working well inside and there was no wifi, which can be fixed. The sound on some of the videos would drop here and there, not sure if it is because of the data connection.
Thato L — Google review
So much information and a beautiful display. It’s mostly videos so be prepared to watch a lot. There’s no wifi so that’s a problem that should be fixed as my data wasn’t working well inside. The videos Dont line up in time so you kind of have to wait until the video finishes to watch it from the start. We were in there a lot longer than necessary.
Louise C — Google review
Although according to the schedule it was open, when we arrived the museum was closed for a long time already. Don’t really know when it’s open and how it is run. Seems like a scam

Beautiful museum about the Bahia Carnival. There are many masks and an interesting interactive cinema with different carnival sound and music. It's worth to visit 🇧🇷
Andrea A — Google review
Very detailed video footage and audio information about the history of carneval. Earphones and audio are handed out at the entrance to the museum. There are several screens with videos and historical information, very easy to follow. To round the experts off there's a room with dancing instructions on a screen, you can dress up to look the part too.

The House and Chapel of the Former Quinta do Unhão, located in Salvador, is a historic site with a rich past. Originally a sugar mill, it has been transformed into a modern art museum and restaurant. The property includes an 18th-century manor house that once served as factories and warehouses before being refurbished by the Bahian state government. Visitors can enjoy fantastic bay views from the Museum of Modern Art, which is housed within the estate.
Super nice exhibitions with artists ateliers open for a visit. Super nice environment, kind staff, nice coffee shop with delicious goodies. We try the small pie of salted caramel. Amazing. It was one of the best places when visiting Salvador. And the view of Gamboa from there, also super nice! Highly recommended! 5 ⭐️

Unfortunately, this is a museum that could likely be skipped if you are pressed for time. However, it is free so if you are passing by I would think it is worth dropping into. The best thing is the view. There is no WiFi. Perhaps check the exhibitions prior to visiting to see if it is worth a visit for you.

They have cheap but nice jazz concerts at Saturdays. Take a cab or an uber to came here. Avoid cars once there's no much space to park and there's a lot of people offering their "services" to take care of yours.

Great exhibitions and beautiful buildings on the water. Jam no MAM (jazz after sunset) is fantastic.

It's a fabulous place that lacks professional assistance. The church, the main house and the patio are wonderful photo spots. I missed someone or some technological gig to tell the history and what was there to see. One should visit because it's a memory of slavery times in Salvador.

It will only worth to go, if you love unpleasant pieces of art and loves to be "the cultural person" Apart from the beautiful view of the deep inequality of Brasil. And last but not least, take care with your belongings, due to the community that will beg you some money to park your car.(don't believe them, there is a parking lot down the road)

No need to say that this is one of the most beautiful spots in Salvador. The sitio features a brand new - and small - charming cinema for art movies. The Chapel itself has been recently renewed and now counts with a fixed exhibition.

During my week-long adventure in Salvador, one of the standout experiences was visiting the Feira de São Joaquim. This vibrant market is a treasure trove of sights and sounds, showcasing an eclectic mix of fresh fruits, meats, and unique items like medicinal herbs and infused cachaças. The atmosphere is lively yet rustic, with half-renovated structures adding to its charm.
Everything you want from a Market, locals, noice, food, all beautifully coexisting in harmony.

A wonderful and unforgettable experience exploring this market. Lots of little stalls with locals selling local produce, handicrafts, fresh seafood and traditional ingredients. We also had the chance to try the local delicacy called Abará which was freshly made and delicious! The prices are very reasonable and cheaper than anywhere I’ve seen in Salvador. Vendors don’t pester you to buy and offer free samples.

Here you are able to find all the fresh items from fruits to vegetable, and most of local must ingredients such as spices and okra, including live chickens, pigeons and goat. One of the oldest markets with many narrow alley and streets, here vegetables and fruits are less expensive than local super markets. During the peak hours it can get very crowds but is very safe place. I

The Church and Convent of San Francisco, also known as the Golden Church, is an 18th-century Catholic church located in Salvador. Its exterior features intricate carvings, while the interior is covered in pure gold leaf, making it a stunning example of Portuguese Baroque architecture in the Americas. Legend has it that builders used a thousand kilos of gold powder for its construction.
Had visited this church this morning. It is located in the Historical Center of Salvador. Understand that a lot of gold was used for the interior decoration.

this building is so so beautiful. The courtyard is covered in tiles that are donated by the portugese king in 1795 (according to my guide), and the inside is covered in gold. I cant even begin to describe it. There are so many statures and sculptures , its breaktaking. Theres also a cemetery of some sort where some ancient bones lay. I heard it also contains the living quarters for some reverened father. This place was really beautiful and its a must see if you ever are in Salvador
Seun — Google review
Gorgeous and interesting Church We stumbled across this during our walk around Pelourinho and what a gem it is. There were flowers laid down the aisle of the chapel so I assume there was soon to be a wedding there and it looked truly stunning. Walking around to can go into the Throne Room and Crypts followed by other rooms with information and artifacts. Just after the Crypts there was an outside area but we didn't venture out there as it seemed this was the reception area with the same flowers as the Chapel so likely for the wedding but it was gorgeous.
Keir S — Google review
Igreja e convento de Sao Francisco De Asis is a highly recommended stop on your next visit to Pelourinho Salvador. It's stunning from the outside and lights up beautifully at night. The real beauty however is seen in the fine detailing and elaborate use of gold on the inside. The cost to enter is only R$5 / US$1( in March 2022 ), a price thats more than worth it. The pictures really don't do it justice. They don't provide tour guides so I would advise visiting as a part of a walking tour of pelourinho, to get details on the history. Definitely add it to your list of must do in salvador.

It is a baroque church, a masterpiece! The interior is breathtaking! Totally covered by with gold-colored wood, magnificent. While the cloister is completely covered with a cilco of white and blue mosaics that put in drawings of the judgments of Horace. Definitely worth the visit. Restaurante Casa de Tereza is a charming eatery located in the beach community of Rio Vermelho, Salvador. Housed in a beautifully restored colonial building, this restaurant offers Bahian cuisine with European and African influences. The menu features dishes like bobo de camarao and Vatapa, which showcase the fusion of flavors from different cultures. The rustic interior is adorned with colorful artworks and vintage decor, creating a cozy atmosphere for diners to enjoy their meals.
Great experience. One of the best meals we had in our three week holiday in Brazil. We went two evenings in a row to have the different moquecas. Delicious all the time. Had to wait maybe 30-40 mins for a table, but it was totally worth it. Good service, nice shop downstairs with fairly priced items.

A very nice restaurant with a big variety of appetizers and main dishes. The drinks are good also and the place has a full bar. The waiter was a little off when we asked for the wine list twice and still never got it. He never said a thing when he let us order the siri pie on its own and it was also part of my main dish. And the fish was also the same as the other fish we ordered. The Doctor dish was so salty that it was hard to eat. The price is on very high, but overall it was still a nice meal.

Restaurante Casa de Teresa in Salvador offers an exceptional dining experience. The atmosphere is warm and inviting, with tasteful decor that combines tradition and elegance. The dining room feels both lively and comfortable, creating the perfect setting for a relaxed meal or a special evening. The food is remarkable. Traditional Bahian dishes are prepared with care and presented beautifully. The moqueca in particular is rich in flavor and perfectly balanced, and the desserts are a highlight as well. Every detail, from the freshness of the ingredients to the presentation of each plate, shows real dedication. This is one of the best places in Salvador to enjoy local cuisine at a very high level.

Ordered the seafood moqueca and really enjoyed it—the flavor was rich, fresh seafood and super tasty. The dish itself was great, but the service was a letdown. The server didn’t seem too happy I was there, maybe just not too welcoming toward tourists. Seems like others have had similar experiences, which is a shame. Hopefully that’s something they can improve on, because the food is definitely worth trying.

Delicious, well cooked food with incredible flavours and generous portions! A stunning restaurant with great service and super friendly staff. We had Mocqueca with prawns and one with soft shell crab - both incredibly tasty and great condiments. We also had the steak and the leg of lamb witch were cooked to perfection 🤩 We all left feeling like we all had a food experience worth the money! Highly recommend.

The place is amazing and the ambience is good. However, this one waiter named Cardoso is arrogant and impatient. He doesn't deserve the Service Fee, unlike Alexander, he is a good waiter. As an icon of gastronomy in Salvador, Cardoso shouldn’t be rude to his guests.

Cuco Bistrô is a contemporary cuisine restaurant and one of the best cachacarias in Salvador, located at Largo do Cruzeiro. The elegant style and innovative dishes make it a standout choice. The chef's creative approach to classic recipes brings out authentic flavors and stunning presentations that leave a lasting impression. Despite its location near the bustling San Francisco Church, Cuco Bistrô feels like a hidden gem with its unassuming facade and simple outdoor seating.
Went to Cuco 2 times during this trip with my girlfriend, would have been down to visit more regularly if I stayed closer. Charming restaurant with friendly staff, food was one of the best ones I had in Brazil. Considering the price tag, i personally find it to be the best bang for the buck in Salvador for me. Below was the first review I wrote right after the first visit. What a pleasant surprise! I did not have much expectations for this establishment, but the codorna recheado à moda do chef (stuffed quail) was truly one of my most memorable dishes in Brazil so far. The rice showed the Arabic influence to Bahian food, with the choice of spices and raisin. The quail was wrapped in bacon and came with reduced jabuticaba sauce, which added a nice layer of sweetness and acidity, complemented the quail meat elegantly. My only critique is with the stuffing, which could use a bit more flavour. However, combined with the sauce, it harmonized without taking away from the rest of the dish.

Quite a nice lunch experience. Service was a little slow due to Carnaval crowds, and value for money was slightly high, but a very solid option nonetheless. Food was well-flavored and arrived with a nice presentation. Recommend the Brazilian beer with fish and shrimp moqueca with hot chili sauce on the side!

This place is a diamond! The service, the food, the drinks, the flavor. Wow! To start, we had the shrimp soup and the cheese with banana (so amazing, a must have). For entrees we had the vegetarian Moheca and the shrimp and pineapple over rice. Both unbelievably good. Not to mention the drinks. Go here!
S S — Google review
Good food, nice location, but the place seems to be overpriced and overhyped. Ordinary Negroni cocktail was 50% more expensive than in other high end restaurants around - that's indicative also for the food: high prices, small portions, and while the fish I ordered was good, it also did not stand out specifically.

Great photo opportunity. Iconic Salvador scenery. Other reviewers have remarked that parking can be difficult but honestly, I never have that problem; I just pay a few reais to the attendant working nearby and go on with my day. There's normally someone leaving and I can snag their spot. (I also rarely if ever go on weekends). There's a bar where you can grab a drink, as well as a drink stand (they accept cash & Pix!) - I highly recommend grabbing a caldo de cana and watching the sunset from here.

Nestled in the lively neighborhood of Rio Vermelho, Casa do Rio Vermelho stands as a tribute to the literary genius of Jorge Amado and his wife Zélia Gattai. This former home, now transformed into a captivating museum, offers an intimate look at their lives over four decades. Visitors can wander through personal spaces like their traditional Bahian kitchen and extensive library, surrounded by an impressive collection of art that reflects their deep ties to Bahian culture.
An extraordinary experience for whoever has interest in Jorge Amado, a pilar in Brazilian literature. This was the house where he spent his last years with his dear partner in life, Zelia Gattai. They “adopted” the house in 1973 and had it beautifully re-engineered to meet their desire for a comfortable home but foremost a location to meet and greet the wide community of artists in Salvador. So that, for to a quarter century, this house was the epicenter of the Salvador community of intellectuals and artists. As you enter the property, you are immediately taken by the charm of the abundant vegetation co-existing with the house itself and how one has mutually blended with the other. You will be visiting one room after the other, each filled with intriguing memories and illustrations of the period. The living room features Amado’s typewriter. This was the room feeding his inspiration. Cooled with the shade of the generous vegetation above the house, it also brought the carpal cropping of toads outside at night. You are then brought to the kitchen, the dressing room, and many others rooms, each filled with touching illustrations of this fruitful period that has marked the Brazilian cultural heritage. An awesome experience which stands very high in list of locations of interest in Salvador!

This place sits right on the beach; there are several seating options inside or at the beach itself, so you will definitely find a comfy spot to settle in. They have a really varied food menu, so everyone can find something to eat, or from random vendors on the beach. Sometimes they also have live music, which really adds to the great atmosphere. Besides that, they have all the necessities—clean bathrooms, outdoor showers, and even a small pool where you can cool off a bit. But the best part is definitely the beach itself—it is absolutely magnificent! In my opinion, it is one of the best beaches in Salvador.

(Translated by Google) Praça da Sé is a public space that emerged in the 1930s. The old Primatial Cathedral, which gives the square its name, was demolished in August 1933, along with two other blocks of buildings in the Historic Center, after years of debate and considerable controversy. The demolition took place at a time (the early 20th century) when downtown Salvador was undergoing extensive urban development, and the purpose of destroying the colonial buildings was to make way for the tram tracks of the Bahia Circular Railway Company. The space created by the demolition gave rise to Praça da Sé, which now houses the trams and the Belvedere da Sé, leisure, cultural, and tourism facilities overlooking All Saints Bay. (Translated by Google) A place of history with a certain beauty and a place where social differences are present. Here you can see a little bit of everything. We were very worried about pickpockets, but the police were well-guarded and we didn't have any problems. I think it depends on the time of day and the time of year. Just be careful where you park your car. Before reaching the streets/alleys, we were approached by men who wanted to make it difficult for us to get through, but with a lot of empathy and a few minutes of conversation, we managed to get out. Apart from that, we walked around the place without any problems. (Original) Local de história com sua certa beleza e um que das diferenças sociais, aqui se vê um pouquinho de tudo. Located in the lively neighborhood of Rio Vermelho, Boteco do França is a charming and intimate bar that has been recognized as the best boteco in Salvador. The small establishment boasts a pleasant atmosphere both inside and outside, with colorful awnings and tables set on Portuguese stone pavement. The bar is known for its cold beer, traditional snacks, and personalized service. Visitors can enjoy the vibrant outdoor art by Bel Borba while indulging in delicious dishes such as octopus and black rice.
The fried bolinhos with meat and cheese were super tasty—crispy on the outside and full of flavor. The octopus and shrimp with black rice was honestly amazing—rich flavor and both the octopus and shrimp were perfectly cooked. Portions are huge, so definitely ask your server for assistance when ordering. Service was excellent, even with the language barrier. Just a heads-up—the chili is really spicy (at least for me), so go easy if you’re not used to heat!

We were walking around rio vermelho and found Boteco. The outside art is breathtaking, which was done by Bel Borba. Highly recommend going early to sit outside in the alleyway. We saw a lot of people getting the octopus and black rice, and it did not disappoint. Get the “baby size” because this was the perfect size for two people. The regular size can feed 3-5. Overall, probably the best food in rio vermelho. The only downside would be the staff were a bit chaotic trying to get bills. I think the machine went down and it started to rain so looking to find seats for people sitting outside.

A very well run restaurant with quality food and friendly servers. The restaurant is very busy and is well run. The kitchen is clean and the chef and kitchen staff are exemplary. I came for the octopus and shrimp rice!

On the menu all looks good but when the dish arrives, there’s a big disappointment. I ordered octopus with rice but what arrived was a risotto with tiny pieces of shredded octopus! I could not have been more angry as I was left to eat a huge portion of rice really..as octopus was nowhere to be found…I’d recommend to avoid this place and go to a proper restaurant…

Cafelier is a charming café and bar located on the edge of the Pelourinho district in Salvador. During the day, it offers traditional dishes in an ornate, old-world space with a flower-strewn hanging balcony. However, it truly shines as a bar at sunset, offering a small menu of artisanal beers, Chilean wines, and fruity caipirinhas with stunning views of Salvador's bay.
Very nice restaurant! Service is perfect, attentive staff, and they altered their food options to suit our food allergies. Very short wait for food, which was fairly priced, large quantities, and very tasty. We went 2 nights in a row, and we would definitely recommend it.

Food came over an hour after we ordered it. We got steaks and they asked how we wanted them cooked. We asked for rare and medium rare, it arrives dry as hell and like a brick. AND an hour late. Unbelievable. Beautiful location but awful service and quality control. *review edit* Second steak arrived only 15 minutes later. It was indeed VERY RARE. The quality of the sauce was very very good and the meat cut was also great. All the elements for this place are there, just some finesse is missing.

Wonderful interior and view on a sunny day. Nominally airy place, however the kitchen smell lingers inside. Food was disappointing. Tapioca cubes easily the worst I had over 2 months. Omelette too oily, reminds me of my grandma's practices. Coffee with milk was good for Brazilian standards. Which is questionable on its own.

Dadinhos de tapioca was pretty small but it was one of the BEST Dadinhos de tapioca I’ve never had!!!:) Sandwich Matisse was good too! A quite rich and tasty cream cheese! Torta dos deuses was a fantastic tart!A bitter chocolate and a passion fruit cream match very well. Also they have a great ocean view and a sweet cat:) We arrived ten minutes before their opening time and few people were already waiting outside! If you want a terrace seat, it might be better to arrive earlier!

The Cathedral of Salvador, also known as the Cathedral Basilica of Salvador, is a stunning Mannerist-style cathedral built in the 17th century. Situated on the Terreiro de Jesus next to Praca da Se, it was originally part of a Jesuit monastic and educational complex. The facade is adorned with stone brought from Portugal, while the interior boasts beautiful Baroque decorations dating back to the 18th century.
Try and get a guide to take you through the Cathedral! We had a wonderful guide, Gilmar, he speaks Portuguese and French. The rich culture and historical background of the region is amazing and he can put the cathedral in the context of the local culture! Beautiful visit and worth the fee.

Morro do Cristo, located in the Barra neighborhood of Salvador, is a grassy knoll by the ocean featuring a prominent statue of Jesus Christ. The area offers sweeping views of Baia de Todos os Santos and the Farol da Barra lighthouse. Visitors can enjoy a leisurely walk along Farol da Barra beach to the lighthouse and explore the Bahia Nautica Museum inside.
This statue overlooks the entrance to the Bay of All Saints. It is a smaller replica of the famous Christ the Redeemer statue in Rio de Janeiro. It was installed in 1920 as a testament to the strong religious faith of the Brazilian people. During Christian celebrations such as Easter and Corpus Christi, the statue is decorated and visited by pilgrims for blessings. This place is also a great place to view the sunset.

The place itself is nice, but I got robbed here. Just after leaving the hill/morro, when going back on the pedestrian/bike way, a guy stood before me and jumped on me to ripped off my necklaces. Hopefully that's all he take of me. It was noon, 11am, full sun, and witnesses around, it didn't stop him. A guy from the same hostel as me got robbed at the exact same place, at midnight, guys pointing a gun at him, he had to give everything. Don't go there with valuable things, or don't go at all

Nice restaurant aiming for a more gastronomical take on the local cuisine than surrounding restaurants. Interior decorations on the quirky side with mismatched tables and chairs and seemingly the paintings are for sale. Also a terrace outside. Friendly and prompt service and the food was very tasty. The starter of bolinho de arroz was good. The main course of moqueca de banana com camarão was delicious. The food was a bit slow to arrive, but worth the wait. Prices are a bit steep, but not at all unreasonable - especially at lunch time. Total for 2 courses and either coffee or dessert and a soft drink came in at R$59.40. Recommended.

50 minute wait for cold food and we were the one of two couples in the restaurant. Really unprofessional and had many staff but none seemed to be working. Unprofessional.
Angel S — Google review
We visited here for lunch at the end of March with friends who had just arrived in Salvador. The restaurant looked nice and was only about 20% full. The food was tasty and the decoration light and interesting. The food took along time to arrive, which is ok in itself, but when it arrived one meal was left off the order (we did not reorder and and shared the food amongst the children that we had) and one meal came after everyone else had finished eating. Drinks we ordered on arrival, came after we had finished eating including a simple beer. Despite me going to the bar to ask for them when asking the waitress several times failed. But the worst was the over charging on the bill. I picked up on the 6 beers when we had the one (you know the one that took about 30 mins to open and bring to the table). The price for 6 beers was not even correct. I got up and quietly told the lady who had introduced herself when we arrived as the owner I would like the bill and was unfortunately not willing to pay service as (for the first time in my life) as it had been so utterly bad. The bill arrived with service on it... and after asking the for the removal of the 5 beers and re informing I was unwilling to pay service the waiter starting begging me to pay service, it was really embarrassing with him just repeatedly asking me to pay. I asked if they only receive service and do not get a salary too, said they did receive a salary but kept on pleading for me to pay. I dont know what was going on that day, we just wanted a good meal with friends we had not seen in some years and were all in a good mood. Rio Vermelho is blessed with many amazing and interesting restaurants so there is no need to eat here. If you do the food is not bad at all but check your bill very carefully. Later at home I went though the online menu and compared to what we consumed and when that did not add up either, I decided to go back to the restaurant in the evening. and talk to a manager or the owner but it was closed.
Nicholas C — Google review
I was looking forward to this restaurant because of the good reviews but unfortunately was disappointed from the first minute. - I waited 10 minutes just to get the menu - It took 45 minutes for the food to arrive. Starter and the main course was served at the same time - 0 attention from the waiters. You need to ask at least twice for everything - The beef (filet mignon) was dry and the pasta bathed in sauce. - Waited another 10 minutes just to get a water and then again 15 minutes for the bill (after having asked two times) - Paid in cash and waited another 15 minutes to get back the change - Total price 154 Real

Just flown in to Salvador, hungry and in need of refreshments. Had already been told about this restaurant and then it turned out it was part of the hostel and round the corner from where I am staying. Now I’ve had some nice burrata dishes while in Brazil but haven’t found any in the last month so when I discovered they had it on the menu I was in no doubt I would take it. Despite a spite language barrier the menu is in English and the laddies (waitress and chef) are smiling and lovely. The plate arrives with homemade bread, tomatoes, garlic, basil and a beautiful fresh ball of Burrata. Extra olive oil and a little dish of spicy sauce were also brought to the table. I was in heaven and savoured every mouthful. I am so please to find Bar Zulu and intend to return tomorrow for the same again!!

Restaurante Mistura Contorno is a stylish eatery located in a preserved mansion with views of the marina. The opulent decor sets the stage for Chef Andrea Ribeiro's sophisticated menu, which focuses on seafood dishes like brodetto adriatico and ceviche with coconut water. The restaurant offers a fusion of fresh seafood flavors and Mediterranean classics, such as Moroccan couscous and squid-ink linguini topped with edible flowers.

Rebecca L — Google review
This elegant restaurant, nestled high on a hill in a condominium complex in the "Cidade Baixa", serves amazing shellfish and fish. Following the rather small couvert, my friend and I ordered the scallops as an appetizer, consisting of three scallops cooked in a delicious sauce and served on the half-shell. For our main entrees, my friend ordered the prawn risotto, not a risotto in the usual sense because the rice was presented braised in small cubes, each about the size of a Tater-Tot. Nevertheless, he was pleased with this entree, which we shared, and which was noteworthy for the medium sized prawns and the accompanying asparagus. I ordered, and we also split, the seafood assortment, which included two half lobsters, several large prawns, octopus, squid, and salmon. All of the seafood items on that platter were superb, with a special call out to the salmon, lobster, and prawns. The restaurant has a nice and fairly reasonably priced wine list. We ordered a crisp Chilean chardonnay that served as a perfect accompaniment to our seafood platters. Mistura Contorno is not inexpensive, even by U.S. fine restaurant standards. We each spent R$ 270 (about US$ 85 at the February 2018 exchange rate). But the value of the meal, along with the excellent service of the garçons, was well worth the price. Addendum on 4 March 2019: I had such a fond memory of Mistura Contorno that I returned to this restaurant today with a different friend. And we were not disappointed! Besides the amazing views, this restaurant looking out over the Todos Os Santos bay has some fabulous seafood. We started with a tender lobster as an appetizer, followed by a pasta adorned with baby clams and mussels. As the main dish, we enjoyed a combination seafood medley, including shrimp, squid, octopus, lobster, scallops, and salmon. We capped the dinner with a tasty dessert with bananas flambeed in a caramel sauce topped by vanilla ice cream. Of course, we enjoyed the Brazilian national drink, a traditional caipirinha made with cachaça, as well as a refreshing glass of an Italian white wine. Just as I noted in my 2018 review, I highly recommend Restaurante Mistura Contorno.

It's a splendid place with the sun set. The ocean is clean and the waves come warming the feet. The lighthouse stands to the sea and makes a wonderful plot to photographers. The area is a little risky in terms of safety, one should always be smart.

Without a shadow of a doubt it is a wonderful place,It has a wonderful sunset, I recommend it. The sad thing is the rough sea, but other than that it is exceptional.

For the cheap admission you get to visit the oldest lighthouse on the continent! There is a ton of history here with ship models and salvaged artifacts dating to the 17th century. A must visit for Salvador and be sure to climb up to the top for the views!

Restaurant
Nestled in the heart of Bahia, Villa Bahiana is a delightful restaurant and bar that captures the essence of local cuisine. With a menu featuring traditional dishes from both the Bahian hinterland and coast, as well as an array of delicious pizzas, this spot is perfect for food enthusiasts. The inviting atmosphere is complemented by live music, making it an ideal gathering place for families and friends alike.
The place is very lively with mostly local people. The food and service are good.

Best brasserie of the area ! We visited it several times during our stay, for diner and just for drinks in March 2015. Great price and value. Several dishes are served for two persons. For example: A two person (500-600 gram in total) picanha plate costs 55 Reals! Delicious! Service is good. The place can be noisy in the evenings during the weekend, but otherwise very relaxed atmosphere.

Chill fun atmosphere. But they tried to hustle me over a bottle of water. How stupid. I ordered coconut water, she brought mineral water. I said I wanted coconut water and she left the mineral as if I wanted it. It sat there unopened and it was still on the check. So petty. Watch your bill here.

It's a really cool place opposite the beach with good food at a good price and many great natural juices if you don't wish to drink alcohol. Staff are really nice too. It's Bahia Brazil. It's great

The restaurant is huge and was rather full last night. But it seemed we were at the wrong place at the wrong time as we had to wait a long time for one of our drinks - suco goiaba - and with the food we had to ask for it 4 times and wait around 45 minutes before we got the meat - carne do sol and then another 10 minutes for all the things which was promised itch the meat. This way they will for sure not see us again.

Nestled just before the iconic Barra Lighthouse, the Carybé Arts Space at São Diogo Fort is a captivating destination that beautifully marries history and culture. This 17th-century fortress has been thoughtfully restored to house an interactive digital art gallery showcasing the works of Carybé, who draws inspiration from Bahian culture and Candomblé's rich iconography. Visitors can enjoy breathtaking views of the bay while exploring historical artifacts like ancient cannons.
Delightful place to acquire some beautiful knowledge regarding Carybé's life activities and work. Amazing place, come to enjoy it all.

It's basically just one digital screen to look at the works of the artist in mention. The digital screens are a bit slow and almost all of them have defects in different functions. The staff are not great energy. Waste of time and money. You could just Google the works instead

Safe, lots of guards and police around. Paid parking close to the nearby marina. Good view towards Itaparica Island and the other Santa Maria Fort. The Baianas do Acaraje Museum is a memorial to the historic role of women in Bahia, with colorful dresses and traditional crafts on display. The museum is especially dedicated to telling the history and honoring Baianas do Acaraje, or "Women of the Acaraje.
A perfect intermission to the Sao Joao festivities. Despite it being a smaller space, it’s big on cultural history. Both the hostess and the guide were extremely pleasant and accommodating. The tour was in Portuguese, but the guide was patient and spoke into my translator. The tour was very informative, and strongly recommended.
Shirell B — Google review
It’s a very small museum — really just one main room with a small library and a tiny shop where you can buy artifacts. I honestly wish it were bigger, because the history and people it celebrates deserve a larger space. That said, it’s still worth the visit. Entry is just R$5, and the museum has been recently renovated. Hopefully, this is just the beginning of something bigger. One thing to note: there are no translations in English or Spanish, which can make it difficult for international visitors to fully appreciate the exhibits.

The venue for tonight's show (Jan 30th, 2022, concert by Guigga e Tarcisio) was amazing, a covered terrace in a beautiful building where the SESI theater is located. While the show was brilliant, it was clearly undermined by careless staff, namely the waiters, who were constantly talking loud both when serving the tables and when stationed very near the stage. The public could hear the waiters and bar tenders louder than the singer. Too bad staff disregard for the beatiful show tarnished the magical evening.

Went to Velho Espanha Bar e Cultura in Salvador with two friends we all had drinks, and they had full meals. I was sick with gastroenteritis and asked kindly for just a piece of bread. They brought it… and then charged me the full price of a pulled meat sandwich I never ordered or received. Sorry, but that’s just not right. They could’ve charged a extra or been fair but instead, they took advantage of someone who was visibly unwell. For a place that presents itself as progressive and inclusive, this was really disappointing.

Bar Âncora do Marujo is a small but cozy space that hosts very fun drag shows, making it a must-visit for anyone interested in LGBTQIAPN+ places in Salvador. The atmosphere is incredible, with cool attractions and excellent service. However, the space is poorly designed, affecting the view from some seats. Despite this, the bar offers unique and amazing performances by dedicated drag performers.
I love drag shows. Period. You have to come here if visiting. Straight? Queer? This place welcomes everyone. The show started at 12:30AM on a Saturday when I visited and I fell in love with the performers. Everyone was so dedicated and gave it their all. Be kind and maybe buy the performers a drink or three. I loved each and everyone of them. I also loved Fernando and Angelica (the bartender). So sweet and listened to my terrible Portuguese. Nestled in the vibrant heart of Pelourinho, Casa do Amarelindo is a charming boutique hotel that beautifully marries history with modern comfort. Housed in a colorful building dating back to 1868, this polished property boasts spacious and tastefully decorated accommodations equipped with all the essentials for a delightful stay. Guests can enjoy stunning views of the Baia de Todos os Santos from their private balconies or unwind by the rooftop pool while soaking up the sun.
Amarelindo is an excellent boutique hotel in the heart of the Pelourinho district. My fiancée, 11-month old child, and I stayed in the hotel for 3 nights. The hotel staff are very attentive and helpful, and promptly answered any requests or questions we had. The cocktails from the hotel bar are the best in Salvador (in my opinion). The pool is small but very relaxing and it has a great view. The morning breakfast is excellent. They give you plenty of food and it’s prepared when ordered; no buffet style here. Also, the soundproofing in each room is excellent. And even though the hotel is in the middle of the pelourinho craziness, we could barely hear a thing from outside and we never heard a noise from our hotel neighbors. This was very nice and helpful to keep our baby asleep. I highly recommend this hotel and I wouldn’t hesitate to stay here again on my next trip to Salvador. There are few hotels that can match the location, service, and quality of this hotel within the historic center of Salvador.

The hotel is beautiful and spotless. The reception from day 1 was so special. Personally greeted on arrival and departure by the owners - they care and the staff are brilliant. The food was extremely tasty, and breakfast was plentiful. Huge shout out to Rodriguo who gave us a full run through of the local area, advised us on where to buy tickets for a local dance show, and took us to the venue to purchase them. (definitely worth going to see), and sorted our taxi for our return to the airport. Thanks to all the staff and the owners for making this leg of our honeymoon so special. One tip - when the hotel offers to organise the airport transport for you - take them up on the offer- it is worth the little extra you pay not to need to trek your suitcases up the very steep hill!!

This boutique hotel has the perfect location at the center of Pelourinho and beatiful views to the bay. The rooms are nice and large. The staff is very friendly. The included breakfast has different options including tasty local cakes.

We stayed here twice because it’s extra comfortable and peaceful in the center of all the action. You step right out into the most picturesque part of Pelourinho with ice cream, food, souvenirs within feet of the door. The best part of this place is the people who work here. So nice, helpful, friendly. We loved staying here.

This is a cozy and beautiful hotel with well designed decoration. The sea view room with king size bed is amazing, I think it’s the biggest bed that I have even experienced in Brazil 😂 breakfast is good, fresh and tasty, and don’t forget to enjoy the sunset on the rooftop. I will definitely come back for the next visit 🤓

Fabulous place and a great start to our honeymoon. The property is very attractive, filled with artistic touches and beautiful spaces. The room was extremely comfortable and the breakfast and dinner there were both excellent. They arranged our collection and transfer from the airport and it all worked perfectly. Right in the heart of the historic centre with great sites and restaurant options all around. Highly recommended.

We had the pleasure to stay at this hidden gem for 2 nights. We were pleasantly surprised on how comfortable and warm it felt from the minute we walked in. The hotel is super clean, comfortable and it has impeccable service. They offer an incredible and extensive breakfast. The restaurants offers authentic regional food as well as international favorites, the food is simply delicious. The flavors are well balanced and flavorful. The bar and pool overlooks the bay and it feels amazing to have skit outside with a nice bottle of wine or cocktail and enjoy the view and atmosphere. We were truly enchanted by the coziness of the place and how welcome we felt by the owners and staff. I recommend this place wholeheartedly and we’ll definitely be staying here again next time we visit the Pelourinho.

Dance company
Balé Folclórico da Bahia is a renowned folk dance company in Brazil that showcases traditional Bahian dances, often portraying Yoruba spirits like Oxum and Xango. The performances take place in a small theater in the Pelourinho, weaving together various aspects of Salvador's history and culture through vibrant costumes, music, and dance. The high-energy shows are a spectacular cultural demonstration that brings audiences to their feet.
Great overall experience. Another review said this, and I second the notion - they definitely need an MC or someone to explain what is going on before each set. Even if only a 45 second intro with the name and significance so the audience isn't in the dark. Especially the howling/bellowing. I nominate the man who engages the audience to clap along with his instrument. The theater is intimate with stadium style bench seating. There is no back support. It's best to email the contacts on the website to reserve a ticket. They are prompt to respond and will hold the ticket for you at call waiting/the check-in desk until 6p. You can pay when you pick it up. Ushers were polite and did a great job packing us in like sardines. Luckily, the show was only 1 hour. Grateful my seat was high in the stand. Drums were too loud for me personally and may be for people with audio sensitivity, so consider bringing ear plugs.

Wow!! What an impressive show!! It was beyond my expectations!! Super intense, action-packed, very professional and theatrical acts! I fell in love with the culture even more. This is a must go when in Salvador. It was a packed house so get your tickets early
Judith J — Google review
Amazing show. It stays true to its Yoruba and African roots with the early Portuguese influence. Simply beautiful, they preserved their history, culture and ancestry through song and dance as was done for thousands of years before the world convinced us that Africans were less than. A must see.

This is an amazing experience about local Bahian dance! It is not easy to figure out how to get tickets without help so ask a local friend. Our tickets were 100 R each and we needed to purchase them two days before a Friday night one hour performance.

No trip to Salvador is complete without experiencing the magic of the Balé Folclórico da Bahia (BFB). Founded in 1988 by Walson (Vavá) Botelho and Ninho Reis, this world-renowned company is a must-see for any visitor. I was utterly captivated by their performance. It was more than just a show; it was an immersive journey into the soul of Bahia. The dancers' extraordinary talent, seamlessly blending natural ability with impeccable technique, is a testament to the rich cultural heritage of the region. Every movement, every note of music tells a story deeply rooted in the lives of the Bahian people. BFB's performances are a vibrant celebration of this culture, shared with passion and authenticity on stages around the world.

Amazing show!! Loved watching the local dances!
Marie L — Google review
The Folkloric Ballet of Bahia was a vibrant tribute to Afro-Brazilian heritage, impeccably staged and deeply moving. It opened with the Pantheon of the Orixás, where dancers embodied each deity in flowing costumes and rhythmic drumbeats. The Puxada de Rede followed, its net-weaving choreography evoking the solidarities of coastal fishing communities. Maculelê ignited the stage with rapid stick duels set to pulsating berimbau rhythms, while the Capoeira showcase blended martial art and dance in a fluid, acrobatic dialogue. The finale, Samba de Roda, united performers and audience in a joyous circle of song and movement. Every element—music, light, costume—was crafted with care, leaving us uplifted by Bahia’s living traditions.
Antonio S — Google review
It started at 7pm, lasted one hour and it’s 5 acts. In the first three acts the dancers seemed a bit bored, you could tell they’re very talented but just maybe done it too many times. It wasn’t until they got to the Capoeira that their faces lit up and you could really feel their energy and passion for doing this.

The experience of the wonderful setting and reasonably priced drinks and snacks is marred by poor management and customer relations. There are four tables with comfortable sofas and prime view overlooking the ocean, reserved for parties of 7 or more. Our party of 5 arrived at 5:30 and requested to sit at one of these tables, but the request was denied. Throughout the evening, not a single large party arrived, and the most desirable tables and seating remained empty. When informed that the kitchen would be closing, we ordered a final drink and appetizer and requested to be moved to a front table to end our evening. The waiter informed that that was not possible. We asked to speak to the manager, who confirmed that the policy was to seat only large parties, even if that means holding 4 tables empty and antagonizing paying customers.

Terrible Host. I had a horrible experience with the hostess. When people reserving the best spots and did not show up. Needs a better management. I won't be going back there any time soon. The positive goes with the amazing attendants Marcelo and John. Fast and reliable when needed. Five Star for them.

(Translated by Google) Wonderful atmosphere! A spacious, open-air space with a perfect view to enjoy the sunset, perfect for both group and family gatherings. The tables are comfortable and well-spaced, so it's not crowded, and you can move around comfortably even in the height of summer. The food is a surprise in itself: we ate, in addition to the appetizers, an EXTRAORDINARY burger. It's definitely worth a try. Fair prices. (Original) Ambiente maravilhoso!

(Translated by Google) The place is stunning, with a charming view of the sunset at Porto da Barra, the summer heat, and the Bahian people—this place is like no other. Wonderful. The atmosphere at the little bar they built at Forte São Diogo is pleasant, but the service is terrible. Not for lack of education or anything like that. The problem is that they had too few waiters to handle the demand at the tables. We arrived early, it was still quite empty, and we took one of the lounges and were served quickly. As the place filled up, we couldn't eat due to a lack of waiters to serve us. We tried every way we could to get their attention and even asked one of them to pay more attention to our table's demands, as it was difficult to keep up with the demand, especially from those drinking beer, due to the lack of people coming to our table. I'm from Bahia and I know this is a chronic service problem in Salvador, but the place charges high prices, and the service has to match the value they charge for the products offered. It's the least the customer expects. I don't mind paying a lot, as long as I get good service. I plan to come back in a while to see if anything has changed in that regard, and I hope to be pleasantly surprised.
