Kilkenny Castle, located in the county town of Kilkenny, is a riverside castle with a beautifully restored interior that offers tours to visitors. The castle is surrounded by a large garden and features an art gallery and tearoom. The town itself boasts Ireland's most preserved Medieval center, along with the impressive Castle and Cathedral.
I really enjoyed visiting Kilkenny Castle. The castle is beautiful, well maintained, and full of history. The grounds are spacious and very peaceful, perfect for a walk and photos. One small issue is the parking. There is street parking right outside, but it only allows a maximum of one hour. I think that’s not sufficient, because the castle and gardens take at least two hours to fully enjoy. It would be great if longer parking options were available nearby.

Impressive Castle, Just Be Prepared for the Crowds! A fantastic visit to the magnificent Kilkenny Castle. The building itself is beautifully restored, and the self-guided tour through the various rooms, especially the Long Gallery, is fascinating and well worth the price of admission. The sprawling parklands surrounding the castle are an absolute highlight – perfect for a walk, a picnic, or just letting the kids run around. It's a true gem in the heart of the city. The reason for docking one star comes down to logistics. We went on a weekend, and it was incredibly crowded, and we had to wait in a queue for a while to get in. Be prepared for that if you're not visiting on a weekday. The biggest challenge, however, is parking. Most of the on-street parking nearby is limited to a maximum of 1 hour, which is simply not enough time to explore the castle and grounds without constantly clock-watching. You're better off finding a car park a bit further away and walking. Overall, it is a must-see piece of Irish history. Just plan ahead for the potential crowds and parking situation to make your visit stress-free!

Beautiful, well maintained castle with lovely grounds. It was a great way to spend a couple rainy hours. There's a QR coffee at reach room so you can very more information on your phone. There's washrooms and a cafe at the castle as well. Our was about €11 to get in.

I really enjoyed my visit to Kilkenny Castle. The rooms are beautifully restored and give you a real sense of the history. The exhibitions are well explained and easy to follow. The gardens and park are peaceful and perfect for a walk, with lovely views of the River Nore. Everything was well organized, and the staff were very friendly. Overall, a real highlight of my stay in Kilkenny and highly recommended.

Nice castle, there are a lot of original furnitures and paintings, many languages printed guides. Enteance fee is 8 euro. You are to use one of the town parkings in vicinity. Enjoy!

We visited on a busy Saturday afternoon with tickets purchased online ahead of time. Theres a very large park connected to the castle that we walked around and explored for a while before our 4:00pm self guided tour. We spent 30 minutes inside walking around the castle taking pictures and finished our tour in the castle gardens full of flowers. We recommend the tour, though we personally enjoyed the castle from the outside more so than the inside as not much of it is original anymore.
Alex B — Google review
Kilkenny Castle is absolutely stunning! The architecture is jaw-dropping, with beautifully preserved rooms that pull you right into its rich history. The guided tour is top-notch—super informative and packed with fun anecdotes. The sprawling parklands around the castle are perfect for a relaxing stroll, and the views are just gorgeous. The staff are warm and welcoming, making the whole experience a joy. Highly recommend visiting!

If you’re in the town, you must go. The grounds are well kept and it was good for a rainy day. If the weather was better, the gardens would be nice to walk around and have a picnic. They did a great job with information so you dont have to have a guided tour if you dont want.

Rothe House & Garden is a well-preserved 1594 merchant's house in Kilkenny, Ireland. The complex includes stone-wall courtyards and a medieval well. It houses a genealogy center and a museum with over 2,500 artifacts, including Bronze Age items, ogham stones, and period costumes. The Burgage Garden replicates a typical 17th-century Irish merchant's garden with authentic plant types.
So much to see, the property is beautiful, especially the gardens!! Our tour guide Eleanor said she was new, but you would never have guessed it! He retelling of the rich history of the property, and the people that lived there, was interesting and fun! Absolutely worth the extra 1.5 to have the guided tour!

The gardens are beautiful. Unfortunately we were not able to take a guided tour but there are QR codes in each room for an audio tour which tell the history of the house and lots of good signage so we were still able to enjoy it. The gardens are beautiful, and the signage there is great as well, telling you about what was planted and how it was used. The whole family enjoyed this stop.

Roth House and garden is truly a secret garden in the middle of the city of Kilkenny, Ireland. It’s a very old walled garden, but you’d never know it was there unless you looked for it. It is behind a wonderful old house. This man accumulated the land and built this wonderful garden years ago, in the back of his home. Now it is open for the public to see for a small fee. First, you must go for a self-guided tour through the house then you come to this amazing walled garden. It’s not like a huge estate garden where everything is trimmed and perfect. This is more like a wild garden where plants can be natural and grow as they would like to and fall over and get entangled. There’s mixtures of so many different kinds of plants. There are some beautiful, trimmed trees and hedges and vegetable gardens and fruit trees, apple trees, a grape Arbor. It’s perfect place for birds and insects to do their thing. I was lucky to discover it on a nice sunny day and there were a few other people around, but it’s a perfect place to go and have a picnic. Here are some pictures of the house, that lead you to the garden and several videos of walking through the garden. The garden is only as wide as the house 70 feet maybe but it goes back forever several hundred feet. There is a small gift shop at the front and I believe you can buy plants there as well. A peaceful and tranquil place to visit. 🌞🦋🌻

We are so glad we did not skip the Rothe House & Garden. Ireland has a very dark history. Historical sites, such as the Rothe House help us better understand that history. The building has been beautifully restored. And now serves as a museum of sorts. While we enjoyed stepping through time during our visit at the Rothe House & Garden, we fell in love with its garden. Absolutely stunning. Photographs are great, but you really have to see this beautiful garden in person. Definitely add the Rothe House & Garden to your list of must see.
Javier G — Google review
Rothe house and garden is well worth a visit. The young woman welcoming guests in the shop was a delight and we received a warm welcome and helpful information. The garden is beautiful in all seasons but we particularly enjoyed all the fall colors and textures, the herbs especially, the yellow pippins, the dried artichokes, and the many beautiful dahlias.

Beautiful place, of historic interest in kilkenny. Johnny was an excellent tour guide, friendly and very informative on the subject.. Highly recommend if you're in kilkenny,, do not pass on a chance to see this beautiful house and garden

An old late 16th century merchant's town house and garden that has been restored to how it was originally, after centuries of reuse and later dereliction. Reasonable entry fee and the guided tour is just a little more, worth it if you like to know about the history of the house and those who lived here. Our guide Séan was very enthusiastic and an absolute font of knowledge - very impressive for a young man.
Andy D — Google review
We are so glad we went to the Rothe House during our time in Kilkenny! We took a self-guided tour. The house itself was like stepping back in time, and its long history and many inhabitants tell a very interesting story about the history of Kilkenny and Ireland. In addition, the gardens behind the house were beautiful in July. It was fascinating to learn how they’ve discovered the types of fruits, plants, and flowers that would have been in the garden in medieval times and replicated it today.

Immerse yourself in the rich history of Kilkenny by visiting the St. Mary’s Medieval Mile Museum, housed within a 13th-century church and graveyard. The museum showcases an array of medieval sculptures, Renaissance-era tombs, and artifacts dating back over 800 years. Highlights include high crosses, stone-carved tombs, and significant relics discovered during the church's restoration.
My family and I had a fantastic experience here! We took the museum’s walking tour of the Medieval Mile with John, and it was our favorite part of our entire weeklong trip to Ireland. John brought Kilkenny’s history to life with stories that were both informative and entertaining. The information he shared really helped us contextualize the rest of the sights we saw and tours we went on that day. He also had great recommendations for where to eat and what to see! The museum not only has artifacts that share a lot about Kilkenny’s and Ireland’s history, but the structure of the museum itself, since it is housed in a renovated a medieval church, also showcases the city’s history. If you’re visiting Kilkenny, the walking tour (offered twice daily) and museum are a must-see!

I just had a tour with John and it was absolutely incredible. John's knowledge of Kilkenny and its history was really outstanding. I would recommend doing this tour because you are given such an amount of information and it is fascinating. The tour starts in the museum itself and then John takes you out and about in the city, honestly, you will be amazed, as I was. Highly recommended to anyone visiting this stunning city. A must.

Kilkenny-This was a great tour, very interesting. Our guide did a great job sharing the history while holding our interest. He even mentioned there is a ghost tour which would visit many the same sites we saw. The old St Mary’s is a beautiful building. Really glad we did this. The walk lasts about an hour, covers maybe a mile (definitely not more than 1 1/2).

We visited the Medieval Mile Museum in Kilkenny with our college class and had the most amazing experience. The guide who took us around (unfortunately we didn’t catch his name) was absolutely brilliant so knowledgeable, engaging, and full of passion for the history he was sharing. He didn’t just recite facts in a dull way, he really brought the stories to life, and you could feel his genuine love for the subject. Our little group couldn’t stop talking afterwards about how great he was and how much we enjoyed the tour. He completely made our day, and it turned what could have been just another history lesson into something memorable and inspiring. Highly recommend visiting, and if you’re lucky enough to get this guide, you’re in for a treat!

I loved the Medieval Mile Trail tour that we did through the Medieval Mile Museum. Our guide John was an absolute delight. He was able to give us historical facts with humor that kept us engaged the whole time. This was one of the first things my boyfriend and I did when visiting Kilkenny and would highly recommend it at the start of a trip - it was a great way to learn about the city as you explored! Highly recommend this tour - especially with John!
Katie F — Google review
We took the Medieval Mile Museum tour with John a couple of weeks ago. The tour was exceptional. John provides a tremendous amount of knowledge regarding the history of Kilkenny which made the remainder of our time seeing the sites around Kilkenny much more interesting. I would highly recommend taking this tour when you arrive in Kilkenny. After the tour, take some time to walk around the museum itself which contains artifacts and more historical information about the church and town.

I always stop here when in town, it's fabulous. Get the audio guide as super helpful
Elk H — Google review
My 8 year old son and I visited this museum while we were on a tour that stopped in Kilkenny. Our tour only allowed for 2 hours in Kilkenny so this was the perfect spot to visit. It’s not terribly large but was extremely interesting and well done. They also had a Lego scavenger hunt in which they gave clues based on the historic items presented in the museum. This made the museum super fun for my son (and myself to be honest). He learned a lot but in a way that’s appropriate and interesting to a child. They also had an audio device they gave my son that he could point at various spots to hear about what was being shown in that section of the museum. Again making it easier for him than having to read through all of the historical information. If you have kids definitely stop here if you’re in Kilkenny.

The Black Abbey, a 14th-century Dominican church and priory in Kilkenny, has been meticulously restored to its original grandeur. One of its most striking features is the Rosary Window, a stunning multi-colored stained glass masterpiece dating back to 1892. This impressive window is not only the largest of its kind in Ireland but also boasts vibrant colors and captivating scenes that come to life when illuminated by sunlight.
Our group wandered into the black Abbey just before 6 o’clock on a weekday evening recently. Were immediately impressed by the beautiful Stainglass windows, the dark Stone, and the field that the building gave off on this rainy evening. To our great fortune, A priest with their setting up for the 6 PM mass, and offered to give us an impromptu personal tour. Hearing the story of the Abbey, it’s historical struggles, recovery, and revitalization, was an amazing treat. This is a building that started off as an Abbey, then when English kinds invaded turned into literal barn, but with eventually returned to being a glorious church overseen by its original owners. This is the perfect place to come and sit for some quiet contemplation time, or to enjoy some beautiful art.

We walked over here from the St. Mary's Cathedral to find that they were about to start a service so we only stayed for a moment. It's very beautiful on the inside and out, though much smaller than some others in the area.

Over 800 years of history are hidden in the stone walls of Black Abbey. Fabulous stained glass windows (especially the Holy Rosary Window on the side nave), sculpture of the Most Holy Trinity, tell the stories of the past. And what a place to stop by, immerse yourself in the quiet of the place and reflect on life.

Free to enter and extremely beautiful interior. Stain glass windows are exquisite and was one of the most captivating churches that I saw in Ireland.

I didn’t expect to be so moved walking through the cathedral, but the atmosphere was incredible. So peaceful, so grand, and filled with stories. You can almost feel the centuries that have passed within those walls. It’s a place that invites you to pause, reflect, and just appreciate the beauty of what humans are capable of creating when inspired by faith and purpose!

St Canice's Cathedral is a 13th-century Catholic cathedral located in Kilkenny, Ireland. It is the second-largest cathedral in the country and has been well-preserved through careful restoration efforts. Adjacent to the cathedral is a 9th-century round tower with panoramic views of the city and surrounding countryside, which can be reached by climbing its 121 steps. The cathedral, along with Kilkenny Castle, forms part of Ireland's best-preserved medieval town center.
Beautiful cathedral in the heart of Kilkenny. I recommend the guided audio tour. An incredible amount of history within the Canice Cathedral. We opted for the cathedral and tower combination tour. If you are afraid of heights or have any balance/knee issues, the tower is definitely not for you.
Javier G — Google review
This medieval church is really beautiful and amazingly old! We also climbed the round tower, which was a one-of-kind experience with great views. Dating from the 9th century, it is hard to believe it’s still standing, let alone that you can climb to the top.
Annie J — Google review
A beautiful piece of history — With a Heart-Pounding Climb" St. Canice’s Cathedral is absolutely stunning, both inside and out. The architecture, stained glass, and centuries of history make it a place you can feel as much as see. We decided to climb the Round Tower — and wow, what an experience. The ladders inside are steep and narrow, and I’ll be honest, it was pretty terrifying on the way up. But when you step out onto the platform at the top, the view takes your breath away (in a much better way!). You can see the castle, the River Nore, and the countryside for miles. If you’re visiting Kilkenny and the weather is dry, don’t miss it — it’s an unforgettable combination of history, beauty, and just the right amount of adrenaline.

A highlight of our first 16-day trip to Ireland & still remaining a highlight after our second 1 week trip to Ireland! The fact you could go up to the top of the tower was awesome! What a view! It blew Kilkenny Castle out of the park for me. I even preferred Cahir Castle to Kilkenny Castle. This cute Cathedral though, with its lovely little round tower, perfection!! Sept 8, 2024.
A ( — Google review
Has to be on your list of places to see in Killkenny. We have been up to.tge castle many times and missed St Candice's. There is a small car park across the road, and a family ticket was around €24. Note you can visit just the Cathedral, or the Cathedral & round tower. I would highly recommend you don't skip the tower, but do not there are ladders and tight areas on the accent!! The cathedral itself is a a peaceful place to explore. Lots of interesting people buried in tombs, with information displayed as u explore. There are a few bits to keep the kids busy, wooden blocks to build a cathedral and some drawings. The cathedral also contains the red book of ossory. If I'm honest while it has huge historical significance, it's not much to look at 😂 The round tower is located directly adjacent to the cathedral. The enyrave is up a metal ladder. There is an attendant sitting just inside the tower, they will tell you if you if you need to wait based on who is already inside. Once u start climbing you will understand why rate limiting is so important! It's narrow/low and sometimes difficult on places. If u are a large person I'd avoid. The view from the top is great!!! Good spot to visit, don't skip it for the castle.

The Tholsel in Kilkenny is a historic building that once served as a toll house and now functions as the city hall. The name "Tholsel" originates from old English words meaning "toll" and "hall," reflecting its original purpose of tax collection. Built in 1761, this limestone-marble structure boasts a distinctive clock tower and grand entrance portico. Despite being the seat of local government, it attracts architecture enthusiasts with its well-preserved facade.
That place was amazing and beautiful. Meals tasted like heaven

IT was erected around 1578 and re-built in 1761; it served as a meeting place, a custom house and now houses the civic offices and you really can't miss it. It looks interesting, but there is not that much to it other than the offices and the entrance to the Medieval Mile Museum.

Immerse yourself in the rich history of Kilkenny and its iconic brewery at the Smithwick's Experience. This interactive guided tour takes you through an 18th-century brewery, offering a fascinating insight into the heritage and brewing process of Smithwick's ale. Explore holographics, old machinery, and hops while being guided by passionate locals with deep roots in the brewery.
Great tour of an iconic brewery. It’s on the more “experience” end of tours, so more history and well polished exhibits. Tour guide Niamh was excellent, and answered all of our difficult and ridiculous questions. If you’re in Kilkenny you have to do it, well worth it. And definitely upgrade for the flight of beer.

This experience is well worth the stop if you are in Kilkenny. Our tour guide was fantastic (i feel terrible i have forgotten her name) and did an amazing job leading us through the history and science that is Smithwick's. The tour is very interactive and has a great production value. It is super engaging and interacting which was great as it was our 3rd brewery tour on our vacation. I highly recommend checking out the cream ale at the end of your tour. Absolutely delicious!!!

You must do this. We walked in and got a spot on a tour at noon. We brought our 5year old with us (kids <6 are free) and even he enjoyed most parts of it. Our tour guide, Simon, was absolutely excellent - full of knowledge and very well spoken on the history and story of Smithwick's. He made the experience really phenomenal. At the end, the barrel room for tasting was really great - comfortable and great service. I HIGHLY recommend this experience - and keep an eye out for the pamphlets with the 10% off QR code! They're all over Kilkenny (and ireland in general).

A solid tour of Smithwick's in Kilkenny - given by Daragh. He was both entertaining and informative! The history was very interesting, and the "picture room" was very cool. Literally moving pictures - and quite well done. The tasting experience, of the ingredients used in making beer, was a nice touch. And the beers afterwards, in the taproom, were well received and poured. Worth the visit, indeed!

We easily booked online. The guide did a good job in presenting the history of the city, brewing and business. The conclusion of the story can be unexpected, if you did not document upfront. Just a museum, not a live brewery anymore. Nice videos and interactions during the tour , it is touchy feely smelly. The price was a bit high in the end for 40 minutes of tour and one beer. The Kilkenny beer might have been the first served on that day, it was mostly foam and quite flat. Also, too cold in the tasting room and with very cold beer , hard to drink.

Joined this beer brewing tour and guided by Colin which gave us a very detail walk through history of brewing business by Smethwick family in kilkenny highly recommended if you ever visit kilkenny tour will take about 45 minutes and it comes with a complimentary beer at the end of the tour

A pleasantly surprising, educational and interactive, entertaining experience. Our young guide was funny and knowledgeable, and the modern sensory elements were delightful. The best part was smelling all the components and then getting to taste the flight of all of Smithwicks' best beers at the end!
Eva V — Google review
Your was pretty good, I learned a lot about the Smithwicks history. The brewing isn't actually done in Kilkenny anymore, so a lot of the tour is of models of brewing equipment instead of the running brewery. And of course, got to drink plenty of beer!

Churches & Cathedrals
St. Mary's Cathedral, located in Kilkenny, Ireland, is a grand Roman Catholic cathedral completed in 1857. Situated on the town's highest point, this imposing limestone landmark features a 60-meter tall tower that dominates the skyline and is beautifully illuminated at night. The cathedral was designed by William Deane Butler and is considered one of the most magnificent churches in Kilkenny. Its design is said to have been inspired by Gloucester Cathedral.
Stunning, peaceful, heart-touching. I'd been looking for affordable rosaries, and I'm so glad to have waited until coming here to buy them - plus the staff checking my geoup and I out was super friendly. It's definitely worth a visit and a prayer.

Free to enter but donations appreciated. We walked over from Killkenny Castle and the doors were literally wide open. The stained glass windows are beautiful, the architecture is beautiful, and the Cathedral is beautiful overall. Definitely worth checking out when in the area and isn't is a very far walk.

This cathedral was nothing short of breathtaking. Every detail, from the stone carvings to the light filtering through the stained glass, felt sacred. It’s the kind of place that makes you feel small in the best way, like you’re standing inside something timeless and deeply meaningful. A quiet, powerful moment I won’t forget.

Just such a wonderful (free) space in this bustling busy city. Situated just off John St lower the gallery is a fully accessible bright and wonderfully designed. There are paintings on permanent display as well as temporary exhibitions. The coup de grâce is the Wild Flower Cafe where we met Olivia. Even on a sunny chilly day we still managed to sit outside in the little "green houses" where we were nice and toasty. Goes without saying that the food was delicious and the service even better.

Kyteler's Inn is a historic medieval establishment located on two floors, featuring cozy stone and beamed bars. It is renowned as the oldest inn in town and gained notoriety due to Dame Alice Le Kyteler, a wealthy banking family member accused of witchcraft and poisoning her four husbands in 1324. The restaurant maintains its medieval ambiance with 14th-century stonework and exposed beams in the cellar built around Kieran's Well.
Loved this place and the food is good. We ordered the fish & chips and the breaded fillet of chicken (I asked for the gravy on the side). The food was warm/hot and it was comforting. I think this the place you want to go if you want a tasty/quick meal and feel like you travelled through time. Loved the theme of the restaurant and the history. All the servers were so nice and our food was quick. They had the restaurant full and we felt like everything went smoothly. For the bill you have to get up and go to the side of the bar, that's where you'll pay.
Patrícia M — Google review
We visited Kytelers Inn during our trip to Kilkenny. The food was genuinely good, flavorful and well prepared, and the historic atmosphere added a nice touch to the experience. However, the service really let the visit down. It was incredibly difficult to get our waiter’s attention for drink refills or even to ask for the check. I understand that service in Europe tends to be more hands off, but this was by far the worst we experienced during our two weeks in Ireland. Unfortunately, it left a sour note on what could have been a great meal.
Gina M — Google review
Went here for lunch with husband and son. Had a good kids menu and lots of different options for food. It was very busy so you can tell it's very popular. On top of the typical "haunted" style decorations, they had extra halloween decor which my son loved. service was polite but curt, food came quickly and was pretty good (not the best pub food we've had in Ireland). But the goat cheese tartlet was delicious! Worth it for the overall ambience and experience.

A huge thank you to JD Flynn and Kytelers Inn for a fantastic Irish coffee making class today! Best Irish coffee we’ve ever had! JD is a great storyteller, and not only did we enjoy the Irish coffee making class, but we were also given an underground cavern tour, history and story of Dame Alice and Petronella which brought historic Kilkenny to life. We may have even seen a spirit or two 👻 🐈‍⬛. Don’t miss this amazing stop during your visit to Kilkenny. Book early, it’s sure to be a sellout.

There was a lot of hype around this bar as one of the absolute must see historical places in Kilkenny so in we popped. To be fair it was very nice with friendly staff, clean toilets and lots of tourists passing through, but l couldnt see what all the hype was about (maybe l missed something) We didnt have the food but it looked nice. It's in the historical center close to both the castle and the cathedral so conveniently located if you want to give it a try.

Stopped in for lunch on a day trip to Kilkenny. As we only had a couple of hours to spend in Town we really appreciated the quick service. They had a couple of beers that were only available at the Inn and it was very good. The toastie was amazing. The atmosphere was so awesome. We visited in October so it was decorated for Halloween which made it even more fun. Would highly recommend.
Laurie H — Google review
I had one of the best fish and chips I've ever eaten! The fish in particular was absolutely delicious: delicate, flavorful, and perfectly fried, not greasy or heavy at all. The chips didn't match the quality of the fish, but they were still very good. The tartar sauce on the side was also excellent, and the mushy peas were a nice touch. The atmosphere is pleasant and full of character, capturing the true spirit of an Irish pub, yet it was calm and relaxed at lunchtime when I visited. It also seemed to attract local Irish customers, not just tourists. The staff were friendly. In total, I paid €44.80 for two fish and chips, one Coca-Cola, and one Sprite.

When visiting Kilkenny, a must-see destination is the Kilkenny Design Centre. Located in Castle Yard, it offers a unique experience with its National Craft Gallery and working studios of silversmiths and craftmakers. The center is renowned for its food hall and quality Irish products, making it a great place to explore and shop.
Esch time I visit Kilkenny, I make sure to stop in here and see what kind of things they have. There is a great variety of gifts for yourself and your family to be purchased here. A great place to shop with a little cafe just down the way a bit. I’ve picked up a nice souvenir ring with The 12 Symbols of The History of Ireland. There are other items as well such as candles, skincare, other jewelry pieces, and more.
Mary N — Google review
The Kilkenny Design Centre does gather a number of artisan goods into one store, but it seems to be pitched towards the tourist market. There are nice products, but they do not highlight the small Irish artisans and focuses mainly on some larger makers. Would try some of the independent shops especially on the back of The Castle Yard.

Hello, I brought my two children here to the downstairs cafe a few days ago at lunchtime. I have to say I was very disappointed with the standard. I am not sure if it is a look but the cutlery in the baskets was grubby and the plates and cups all had a brown layer on them. We left half the egg sandwich as it was very tasteless with the bread stale on the edges. Visiting the upstairs gents toilets I was very surprised to find how dirty they were both the floor and surfaces. The cubicle even had graffiti inside dated 2023! I can supply the photo. I know they can do better as I have been before. Perhaps even a few wall hangings downstairs to take away the roadside cafe feel of reverberating sound from the closed in space? Maybe this is why I was asked by a resident of Kilkenny we were staying with why on earth we went there its only for tourists and not very good.

Black Freren Gate is a significant historical site in the city, as it is the sole remaining gate from the original 12th-century Norman walls. Originally connecting the monastery to the town, it was under the control of Black Abbey's friars. Although now supported by metal bracing, this gate stands as a reminder of its medieval origins. The gate also played a role in separating Irish and English residents at one point.
Not much description of the location but interesting how it is embedded into the local housing.

Marco S — Google review
(Translated by Google) This gate dates from a long time ago. It provided access to the walled Kilkenny for travelers coming from the Black Abbey, which lay outside the city walls. The monastery was the second monastery of the followers of Saint Dominic in Ireland. They wore black hoods over their white habits. And hence the name of the abbey and the gate. Zij droegen zwarte kappen over hun witte pij. En vandaar de naam van de abdij en de poort.

Shee Almshouse, established in 1582 by Sir Richard Shee, is a historic Tudor building in Kilkenny, Ireland. Originally intended to provide care for the poor, it has served various purposes over the centuries including as a church, hospital, and shop. In 1978, Kilkenny Corporation acquired and restored the almshouse to its original state. Today, it houses the tourist information office of Kilkenny while preserving its rich historical significance.
Staying at the Butler house our room was “Shee room” they had a little write up about the historical building: Shee Alms House was founded by the Shee family in 1582 'to accommodate twelve poor persons' in the city of Kilkenny, Ireland. During our exploration of Kilkenny we stumbled upon the house.

Sir Richard Shee (pronounced 'Shay', not 'Shee') was an estate landowner with a castle in the Kilkenny area. He left a foundation for poor persons in his name, this building that exists to this day. His tomb in back of St Mary's, nearby, in what used to be inside the back of the church, is now restored.

The Hole in the Wall is a restored 18th century tavern in Kilkenny. It is open to visitors for the first time in hundreds of years and has a lot of character. The pub attracts many distinguished visitors, most notably the Earl of Ormonde who enjoyed locally brewed ale here in the 1750s.
Fantastically small, but such a large presence. The bar keep (Miles) was fantastic and very knowledgeable of the bars' history, and the atmosphere was welcoming and fun. When you come in, you definitely have to walk around and look throughout the building. This is a historical building, and the love and care for it is impressive. Thank you for such a fun night. We will definitely be back.

If you go to Kilkenny, this is a must stop! Keep in mind they don’t open until 8PM and it’s tricky to find as it’s down an alley and if it’s not open, you may think that’s not the place BUT it is. Meet the owner Michael and have a pint. He is a wealth of information and an all-around gentleman. It’s elbow to elbow downstairs but worth every minute you spend there. Be sure to ask Michael about stethoscopes…

Always a wonderful night at the Hole in the Wall. Whether the owner Dr. Michael is tending bar or any of his employees you’re in for some wicked fun craic if you linger near the bar. Great and varied music upstairs too - last night was Irish trad lads who told stories between songs, last year it was a group of teens who I’d liken to a young Led Zeppelin!

Kilkenny City Tours offers an interactive map and guide showcasing the city's medieval mile attractions. The map provides pop-up adverts with detailed information and is available at the Kilkenny Tourist Information Centre. Visitors rave about the train tour, praising driver Paul Matthews for his humor, helpfulness, and storytelling skills. The 45-minute tour is recommended for first-time visitors and those with limited mobility, as it offers a fun and informative way to explore the city's key landmarks.
Thoroughly enjoyed our tour of Kilkenny with Paul. Perfect way to see the highlights and learn the history of this fabulous city. Paul was so entertaining and funny, highly recommend this tour, visited June 2025.
JanTim M — Google review
I would not recommend this experience to tourists. We chose to go on this trip because I had a sprained ankle and we were traveling with a baby in a stroller, making it difficult to walk around. When we arrived, we spoke to one of the drivers, a woman, who informed us that we had missed the 1:00 PM train and suggested we cross the road to catch the next one at 1:30 PM. Following her advice, we crossed the road and asked another driver for two tickets for the 1:30 PM train. He provided the tickets and told us we could either wait on the train or sit on a nearby bench until departure. Given my foot condition, it took us some time to load our belongings onto the train. By 1:10 PM, other passengers began boarding, and a guide suddenly appeared, informing us that we needed to disembark as the tour would be conducted in German. We approached the driver, who confirmed this and mentioned he would return for the English tour at 1:30 PM after dropping the current passengers at the market. With no other option, we waited. The driver finally returned at 1:48 PM. I expressed our frustration over the long wait, and he then told us we'd need to wait until 2:30 PM because, if a group arrived at 2:00 PM, they would be prioritized for the public tour. When I pointed out that this was a waste of our time, he responded rudely, asking if we wanted our money back and then used offensive language. Both my wife and I were shocked by his lack of empathy, especially since we had a small baby with us and had already waited for an hour unnecessarily. We were deeply disturbed by this encounter, so we took our money back and left.

This tour was fantastic! Paul made the ride entertaining, even for two hard to impress (often very cynical) teens! He stopped to provide ample time for photos, gave great commentary, and even got into the spirit of Halloween - dawning a mask and getting folks around town engaged in the experience, too! We learned a lot, saw most of the town, and had a really fun time. I highly recommend this to anyone and everyone spending any amount of time in Kilkenny.

Had an amazing time on this. Family of 4. Had our own door and row. It lasts 30 minutes. Guide was done via a recording with speakers in the carriage. If people talking it's hard to heard. It is very informative and very interesting. Paul was driver was great. Everyone was laughing at him and having great fun. Great way to see Kilkenny. Highly recommend it. Parked up the street which was great. Train is under cover so rain never bothered us. Kids were loving it, nice big windows to look out. It's cash on the day or via revolut. No cards excepted. If using a card, book online. Well worth it.

The shopping centre itself is bright and clean, accessible and easy to navigate your way around. It’s not too big but it has a good selection of shops and a nice square with cafe options. It also has a Dunnes for groceries and clothing/homeware.

Market Cross Shopping Centre is a must-visit in Kilkenny, offering a convenient location and easy parking for shoppers. It houses major brands like Supervalu and the only Penneys Store in Kilkenny, known for its affordable fashion for men, women, and children. The center provides a variety of stores catering to trendy fashion pieces, unique gifts, and everyday essentials.
OMG, this place is fire, in here you have Super Value, Pennys, and more you name it, the city is clean and the ppl are very welcoming, a day trip to Kilkenny is a must through Paddy wagon, thank you❤️❤️
Viky O — Google review
Lot of vacant shop units here and the Penny's is not very good here, self service tills that don't work properly and staff have to keep assisting with them, they should have just left the original checkouts.
Kevin B — Google review
I recently visited Kilkenny for a walk and accidentally ended up at the shopping center parking lot, which turned out to be very conveniently located — right in the city center. The main street and the castle are just a few minutes' walk away. The parking cost is reasonable: €2 for entry or per hour. The payment system is a bit unusual: you take a ticket at the barrier when you enter, then go for a walk, and later pay at a special machine. The paid ticket is then used to exit through another barrier. It might seem a bit inconvenient, but I think it’s designed to avoid queues at the exit. As for the shopping center itself, I didn’t have a chance to explore the stores since I came just for the walk. Overall, the parking left a positive impression, and its convenient location is a big plus.
Amizonus — Google review
It's a little bit out of the way from the city centre. It's lovely. The food square is a gorgeous spot. I love the historic connection to the famine in Ireland and the audio / visual self guided tour in the shopping centre.
Andrea C — Google review
Nice shops that are there but for some reason so many are closing, maybe rates are too high
Joan C — Google review
It’s a small shopping complex within town. It’s well organized with some good options. A few coffee shops , penny’s along with other. Near the carpark on first floor there is a small lane on which there is a very handy Halal food shop which has a good collection of groceries and fresh meat.
Megas X — Google review
Nice open air shopping center with a little bit of everything. From supermarket to places to eat to a very nice sized parking lot at a fee.

Pennys charged 15 cent today for a miserable paper bag didnt even know until by chance i saw it on the receipt putting it in the bin.

21Kilkenny Castle Rose Garden

Garden
Kilkenny Castle's rose garden is a beautiful and well-maintained spot to spend an afternoon. The gardens feature many colorful roses, as well as a few fountains and benches for visitors to relax in. There is also a coffee shop available that sells sandwiches and cakes.
I recently embarked on a self-guided tour, and it turned out to be an excellent decision. Without the constraints of a tour group, I had ample time to fully appreciate the stunning interiors at my own pace. The adult ticket was reasonably priced at 8 Euros, while students could enjoy a reduced rate of 4 Euros. The tour offered multilingual leaflets, which were incredibly helpful in understanding the rich history of the place. There were also convenient lockers available for storing bags, adding to the ease of the visit. One of the highlights was the beautiful pastry available on-site, making for a delightful treat amidst the exploration. The facility also included a charming tea room, which was a perfect spot to relax and reflect on the experience. Additionally, the surrounding gardens and scenery, which are free of charge, are definitely worth a visit. The serene and picturesque environment added an extra layer of enjoyment to the trip. Overall, the self-guided tour provided a wonderful blend of flexibility, history, and beauty. I highly recommend it to anyone looking to explore at their own pace and truly savor the experience.

Lovely little garden, got some great family photos sitting in front of the fountain with the castle in the background. This is just one more stunning area in the castle grounds. We enjoyed our day there immensely. Would recommend a visit to the castle to everyone !!! Will be back.
Van M — Google review
Lovely little garden to visit, mostly well kept apart from a few weeds. Grass is tidy and borders are nice, not many flowers but there is no entrance fee so I didn't expect too much! Plus if you look hard enough you may find some fairies! (you may see a few in my pictures! Hehe)
Thomas — Google review
a truly spectacular garden with fabulous colours and scents The fountain in the centre decorates the whole garden and the roses are the predominant element in the centre of the garden The view of the castle steps is stunning and it is truly worth coming to see this marvel open to the public for free

Historical landmark
The imposing ruins of a medieval town wall can be found in Kilkenny, Republic of Ireland. The walls surrounded the city during the Middle Ages and are now a part of a heritage conservation project. Talbot's Tower, located on the High Town circuit close to the Abbey Street walls, is one of the most interesting remnants of this era.
The inside of the Tower was closed but still pretty cool the walk around, read the posts and see what it was about.
Nicole P — Google review
Nice quick stop off if you're in the area. Very clean, a few benches for the little legs to have a rest. Unfortunately there is a locked gate at the bottom of the stairs. A few interesting info signs to read.
Van M — Google review
It features interpretive panels that narrate its story and the history of Kilkenny's medieval walls. While the park is accessible, direct access to the tower itself may be restricted due to steep steps, though tours can sometimes be arranged by appointment. It stands as a testament to Kilkenny's rich medieval heritage and is a popular spot for visitors to explore and appreciate the city's past.
William M — Google review
Short stop here to read about the site. Stairs are locked to go up in the tower.
