Park
The Park of 28 Panfilov Guardsmen, situated in the heart of Almaty, is a 44-acre urban park that pays tribute to the heroic Panfilov soldiers who fought during WWII. The park features striking war memorials and an 'eternal flame' honoring their sacrifice. Adjacent to the park stands the visually captivating Ascension Cathedral, a Tsarist-era wooden structure claimed to be one of the tallest in the world.
The park is buzzing with people and I visited this place with my family. My four-year-old had a blast with her bubble gun, fishing activity and visiting the ascension church. The experience was surreal. Also, it is good to meet local children trying to converse in English. Plenty of pigeon-feeding activities and kids keep your little ones engaged. I highly recommend this place for the kids.
Varun C — Google review
For beginners, this park house the Ascension Cathedral, museum of instruments, war memorial. One walk around the park and you will cover most of the attractions. Pleasant walking track, small shops, kid friendly stroll and further walk leads to the central park. Put your best walking shoes.

Great place. Shows the history of world war and the people who have contributed their lives to save their country. Must visit for travellers! There's a beautiful music museum too. This place is near to green market and Ascension cathedral

28 Panfilov Guardsmen Park, Almaty 🇰🇿 A beautiful and peaceful green space in the heart of Almaty perfect for a relaxing family stroll or a quiet afternoon to feel the nature. The 28 Panfilov Guardsmen Park is not just a park, but an important historical landmark dedicated to the 28 soldiers who bravely defended Moscow during World War II. The centerpiece of the park is the impressive Eternal Flame and the War Memorial, surrounded by beautiful flower gardens and tall trees that provide shade throughout the area. The Ascension Cathedral, with its stunning wooden architecture and colorful domes, adds to the charm and makes it a must-see for visitors. There are walking paths, benches, and open areas where families relax, kids play, and tourists take photos with pigeons. The atmosphere is calm and respectful, with soft background music and a sense of history everywhere. Travel Tips: Visit in the morning or evening for the best light and fewer crowds. Combine your visit with a stop at the nearby Green Bazaar or Arbat Street. Great place for families, photographers, and history lovers. A perfect mix of history, culture, and nature, one of Almaty’s most memorable spots.
Semeer K — Google review
Big beautiful park in the centre of Almaty. Good for walking and relaxing. It includes Ascension Cathedral, war museum, and a lot of monuments. Some ice cream vendors and playing area for children.
Habib — Google review
Nice park. Better maintained than the First President Park. The monuments were classic. Reminds one of the two world wars. The ice creams sold are very bad. The cotton candy was okay.
Arun N — Google review
Beautiful park covered with lush green trees during spring and summer. It has a church inside along with the statue of Panfilov Guardsman. Great place to go with kids and spend time with family.
Vishwash G — Google review
The park is the most fantastic in early summer morning. It’s a historical place. There is a famous Cathedral that stood the devastating earthquake of 1911.

Kok Tobe is a famous mountain in Almaty, offering stunning city views and a variety of attractions. Visitors can take a cable car from the station on Dostyk Avenue to reach the park at an elevation of 1,620 meters. The ride provides breathtaking panoramic views of the city's skyline and natural landscapes. At the top, visitors can enjoy an amusement park with various rides and activities.
A nice place to visit, from where you can see the full city panorama. You can go up to the top of the hill with the gondola cableway, by car, or by walk. We took the gondola one way up from the city, but came down in nice relaxing walk. On the weekends the place is packed with locals with kids and tourists alike, which makes the place super crowded, non the less, its a nice place from where you can see a spectacular sunset over Almaty with the mountains in the background.
C. L — Google review
It was long queue ,but not a long wait at ticket counter. We paid per person 8,000 tenge for a two-way adult ticket cable car ride. From the cable car, the high angle views of the entire city and surrounding mountains is breathtaking, only if the cable car window panes are clean enough for picture takings ! As we got off the cable car, we walkes into a place with fun attractions for all ages. There are many spots to relax and enjoy the sceneries from several viewing platforms especially looking out the Zaili Alatau Mountains. It has An Amusement Park with Ferris Wheel, Merry go round, Fast Coaster, and an upside down house with activities for kids, There are souvenir shops and restaurants where we stop by MonteVerde for some food. I would say Kok Tobe is great for families with young children as most activities are geared toward kids. Nevertheless it was still great relaxing time spent !!

A nice place on hill top and can be reached by Gondola. . The entire city can be visualised . A very good place for children for various sports and activities.

Kok Tobe is a fun and scenic spot in Almaty! The view over the city from the top is amazing, especially at sunset. You can take the cable car up, which is a nice ride, or go by car. There are cafes, souvenir shops, and even a small amusement park it’s great for a chill walk or a date. Clean, well maintained, and worth a visit!

Kok Tobe has its charm — with cafes, music, and kids’ attractions — it’s a bit livelier than we expected. The atmosphere is more “family outing” than “quiet retreat,” with a touch of noise and activity around. If you’re after true tranquility and deeper connection with nature, you might need to wander a bit further from the main area.
Stan D — Google review
Great place to spend an evening. You can reach the top via a cable car. There are lots of activities and games on the hill. Great views of the city.

Specialty Museums
The Central State Museum of the Republic of Kazakhstan in Almaty is a must-visit for those eager to delve into the history and culture of Kazakhstan. Established in 1931, this expansive museum boasts a diverse collection of artifacts and archaeological findings that offer insight into the unique identity of the Kazakh people.
Central State Museum of Kazakhstan is housed in a fine building with beautiful traditional exterior architecture in blue and white. The signboard is in Russian stating Museum opening time but it differs from the website, its not an issue to us as we were there to visit around 2pm. Entry fee is 500 tenge per person. There are 3 levels of museum exhibits, on ground floor from prehistoric era to middle ages pertaining to the history of Kazakhstan. Every exhibits has English label which is absolutely great for our understanding.!!! There’s many local costumes and carpets on show, plus musical instruments and the importance of agriculture to the country. On the second floor is the modern era. An entire room is dedicated to nationalities with their traditional costumes who inhabit Kazakhstan. A key exhibit is the exact miniature copy of the military uniform of the "golden man" made from over 4000 golden parts. We spent about an hour & half. Wish we could stay longer. Quite educative as well as informative. However, I suggest that there should have been a brochure in english for visitors like us. Nevertheless it is worth the visit !!
Susan C — Google review
This museum has its strengths and areas for improvement. The stuffed animal section is visually impressive, and I enjoyed the current affairs and information on the top floor. However, the lack of English translations, especially beyond the top floor and in the art section, is a major drawback—making it hard to understand the exhibits. Entry is incredibly cheap, and there’s a paid section too.
Mohamed A — Google review
It was interesting to visit this museum. All collections were engaging. The museum interior space is beautiful 😍. Its not too large, so you can proceed everything 1 hour. It is kid friendly.
Anastasia G — Google review
The Central State Museum of the Republic of Kazakhstan offers a wealth of information for history enthusiasts, particularly those with existing background knowledge in the subject. The museum is undeniably knowledgeable, covering extensive aspects of Kazakhstan’s rich heritage. However, the presentation could benefit from modernization. The exhibits rely heavily on hard facts and detailed information without much effort to make them accessible to general visitors. More interpretive displays, storytelling elements, or interactive features would help transform raw data into engaging narratives that casual visitors can easily absorb and appreciate.
Sansiri K — Google review
Beautiful and well-maintained museum that showcases Kazakhstan’s rich history, from ancient archaeology to modern times. It also houses a stunning Gold Jewellery Museum within the same premises — definitely worth a visit. ✅ Tips for visitors: • The museum is closed on Tuesdays — plan accordingly. • You’ll need about 1–2 hours to explore comfortably. • Ticket price: 5,000 ₸ per adult. • The Archaeology Museum is part of the same complex. • Ask for an English-speaking guide — without one, it’s hard to understand the exhibits, and a self-tour (“DIY”) isn’t very rewarding. Overall, a must-visit spot in Almaty for those who enjoy history and culture, but go with a guide to make it truly worthwhile
Varman O — Google review
Quite complex museum, because of its history! Hopefully they will provide English translations on the few signs available only in Kazakh and Russian, but its the minority. I spent 2hrs30 or so; sometimes the narrative seems quite difficult to follow, particularly with the nomadic cultures. Absolutley recommended! Also keep an eye on events; I had the change to attend a reading memorial, which I enjoyed even if I couldn't understand the language. Take your time to enjoyed the gold exhibition!
Julian G — Google review
A three-level museum, with the most interesting sections covering animal history, including dinosaurs. It would have been even better if guides or an audio tour were available throughout. Some exhibits had audio guides via an app, but not all.
Vedant N — Google review
A great museum experience – everything is clear and well presented. The vast granite halls create an open, airy feeling, making it easy to breathe and move around. The exhibition beautifully tells the story of Kazakhstan.

The Green Bazaar in Almaty is a bustling indoor market filled with stalls offering a wide variety of goods. Visitors can explore an abundance of fruits, berries, exotic delicacies, sweets, cheeses, meat products, and rare spices. The friendly sellers are eager to offer samples of national delicacies for visitors to try before making a purchase. Additionally, the market features small dining places serving traditional dishes like lagman and plov.
This is a great location. The first floor (assuming you enter from the main entrance) is the cleanest and most photogenic part. However, as you walk further through the halls and corridors, you’ll first reach the jewelry section. Then, if you take the stairs down, you’ll find the real bazaar on the ground floor, where locals tend to shop due to slightly lower prices. Similar to the Grand Bazaar in Istanbul, if you’re willing to explore beyond the main market building, you’ll find many shops scattered along the surrounding streets. From textiles to seeds, almost everything can be found here. You can walk among the locals — the quality is generally low, but so are the prices. At the main entrance, you’ll notice stairs leading to the upper floors. Surprisingly, a coffee shop, a meat restaurant, and a fish restaurant have been set up among the structural columns. The coffee shop is excellent and definitely worth a visit. The meat restaurant is usually packed with locals — it seems to be very good, although I didn’t get the chance to try it. This is definitely a spot that should be experienced.
Gökhan N — Google review
Green Bazaar is not just about a bazaar selling butchery, it has other stalls selling household products. Of course, butchery section is the most interesting. Selling from horse meat, beef, lamp, pork and chicken. The stall holders are very friendly. You can also find Korean food stuff here. There are also money changers with good exchange rates outside.
Lee K — Google review
A hyperactive market bursting with local sights, sounds and smells. Very close to my hotel, the bazar literally offers everything under one roof. From souvenirs, dry fruits, fresh fruit and vegetables, meat, baked goods, clothes, toys and so much more. They have a money exchange there too. Prices are reasonable and fresh produce is of top quality. They even have a salon, prayer room and several cafes. Quality of fruits I bought was excellent. Don't miss it!
Pankaj — Google review
Green Bazaar (Zelyony Bazaar), Almaty 🇰🇿 If you want to experience the real heart of Almaty, Green Bazaar is the place to go! It’s a vibrant, colorful market packed with energy, aromas, and friendly local vendors. You’ll find a huge variety of stalls — from fresh fruits, vegetables, herbs, nuts, and dried fruits to meat, fish, and dairy counters offering local delicacies like horse sausage (kazy), smoked meats, and homemade cheeses. There’s also a big section for spices, honey, chocolates, and herbal teas, all beautifully displayed and perfect for gifts or souvenirs. Upstairs and around the sides, there are stalls selling traditional Kazakh clothing, hats, carpets, handicrafts, and souvenirs, giving you a glimpse of local culture and craftsmanship. Prices are fair, and many vendors offer samples — especially for dried fruits and nuts. Travel Tips: Bring cash (Kazakh tenge), as not every stall takes credit cards. Go in the morning for the freshest produce and fewer crowds. Bargaining politely can help you get better deals. Don’t miss the small eateries around the market serving local snacks and shashlik grills. Overall, Green Bazaar is more than just a market — it’s a cultural experience full of flavors, colors, and local warmth. Highly recommended for families, foodies, and anyone who loves exploring local life.
Semeer K — Google review
Great place. Clean. Lots of interesting food, don’t be afraid to ask for a sample. And prices are fair if you choose to buy. I bought few varieties of delicious horse meat sausage, some horse milk smoked cheese, etc. There is also other areas and levels with fresh fruit, dried fruit, Korean food, local souvenirs, clothing etc.
James W — Google review
An expansive, multi-floor bazaar which sells basically everything from meat and vegetables to clothing and jewelry. It’s a fun place just to walk through and explore.
Matt B — Google review
Green Bazaar is a vibrant, authentic slice of Almaty life that’s surprisingly clean and well-maintained. Even if you’re not typically a market person, this is absolutely worth visiting. The bazaar beautifully captures Kazakhstan’s diverse food culture and ethnic groups, offering a genuine look at local life. It’s colorful, lively, and provides real insight into the daily rhythms and culinary traditions of the city.
Sansiri K — Google review
A local bazaar that's nothing special for those from India. You can buy various dry fruits and nuts, that's pretty much it. The rest is fruits, vegetables and meats and Chinese made clothing and shoes. Visit only if you have nothing else to do and want to buy dry fruits, else skip.

Ascension Cathedral, also known as the Zenkov Cathedral, is a stunning wooden Ukrainian-baroque Russian Orthodox cathedral consecrated in 1907. This majestic landmark in Almaty showcases striking golden domes and intricate architectural details that reflect Byzantine and Russian styles. Inside, visitors are greeted by candlelight and prayers, making it a cherished place for the local community.
A breathtaking cathedral, a marvel of modern architecture, exudes beauty and grandeur. Its intricate structure, vibrant colors, and picturesque surroundings create an ideal setting for worship. The vast cathedral grounds are surrounded by nature’s splendor, with blooming flowers adorning the surrounding area. On a weekend, the Cathedral square buzzed with activity, a lively scene filled with people. We were fortunate enough to be present at the right moment to receive blessings and be sprinkled with holy water. As we explored the area, we also indulged in some refreshing🍦. Being centrally located we passed it quite a few times and it also looked amazing during the night with all the lights making it shine.
Manish G — Google review
The most beautiful place in Almaty and one of the highlights of my Central Asia trip. I came here a total of 4 times. The Ascension Cathedral is 100% made of wood and doesn't use any nails. Its 56 meters tall which makes it the second highest wooden church in the world. It also miraculously survived the 1911 earthquake, which for its size is very impressive. The colour use on the outside is absolutely breathtaking and it also has a beautiful interior. There are many icons including a chinese inspired icon which are rare to find in orthodox churches. I was lucky to attend a service and a wedding within the church, the acoustics inside are amazing for singing, its very impressive. The store to buy religious souvenirs & candles is located in a small building on the right side of the cathedrals main entrance and there is a place to drink water in the entrance room on the right side. This is a must see location when visiting Almaty, it doesn't matter if you are Religious or not. I hope to return some day in the future!

An absolute must-see in Almaty! The Ascension Cathedral in Panfilov Park is breathtaking both from the outside and inside. The colorful exterior is beautifully restored and stands out as one of the city’s most iconic landmarks. Inside, the atmosphere is peaceful and filled with stunning details, icons, and artwork that reflect the rich spiritual heritage of the region. The surrounding park makes the visit even more enjoyable, offering a perfect place to walk and relax. Truly one of the highlights of Almaty – highly recommended! Greetings!

The Ascension Cathedral in Almaty is one of the city’s most beautiful and iconic landmarks. Located in the heart of Panfilov Park, it’s surrounded by lush trees, walking paths, and peaceful green spaces that make the whole area feel calm and inviting. The cathedral itself is absolutely stunning — a masterpiece of architecture with its colorful design, intricate details, and tall spires that stand out beautifully against the backdrop of the park. Whether you’re religious or simply enjoy historical sites, the Ascension Cathedral is definitely worth a visit. The park around it is perfect for a peaceful walk, and you can take lovely photos from every angle. It’s a great spot to relax, enjoy nature, and appreciate Almaty’s cultural heritage all at once. Overall, Ascension Cathedral is a must-see attraction when visiting Almaty — a place that combines beauty, history, and tranquility in the most perfect way.

When I went there, I didn’t visit this beautiful mesmerising Cathedral at Day time. Park is very very beautiful as well as Cathedral. I really miss it till now since I visit Almaty. Its location is near to Gogol Street Almaty which is approximately center of the city. A must visit place. ❤️
SAIKAT M — Google review
I visited Zenkov Cathedral (Ascension Cathedral) in Almaty during summer with my family. The frescoes inside are beautiful, and the interiors shine with golden tones—candle stands, shrines, and details all appear gold-plated. There are no guides or information boards inside, so it’s better to prepare yourself beforehand to fully appreciate its history and meaning. You would never feel that no nails were used in its construction—the wooden walls look like a normal solid building. From the outside, the colorful exterior is stunning and beautifully restored, making it one of the city’s most iconic landmarks. Inside, the peaceful atmosphere, icons, and artwork reflect the rich spiritual heritage of the region. Located within Panfilov Park, the setting is perfect for a relaxing walk after your visit. An absolute must-see in Almaty and truly one of the city’s highlights – highly recommended!

It stands as the sole museum of its kind globally, showcasing the rich musical heritage of Kazakhstan. The museum is part of the Almaty Museum Association, which includes several prominent institutions dedicated to preserving various aspects of local culture and history.
Nice place to visit while you are in Almaty, Kazakhstan. the entry ticket can be bought at the gate. Ticket price is 1500 tenge. The museum of musical instruments is a museum of folk music instruments from all over the world. The journey of musical instruments is very interesting. Also, the museum building itself is very beautiful. It has a unique architecture. Located just at the edge of Panfilov Park.

This is a great place for those interested in examining musical instruments. There are many examples of dombra-style instruments from their original owners. You can find both stringed and wind instruments in this museum.
Süleyman U — Google review
A small but very interesting museum showcasing traditional musical instruments from Kazakhstan. The dombra and the kobyz (stringed lutes) featured heavily but harps, flutes, drums and accordions were also well displayed. The displays are beautifully presented behind anti reflection glass with signage in Russian and English. There are video presentations showing the instruments being played. Could spend about 1 hour here. There is also a gallery with international instruments from South East and Eastern Asia. Free toilets downstairs. Well worth a visit.
Timeshare C — Google review
Not a vast museum, but a densely packed one at that. They’ve got a good collection of instruments on display, not on from across Central Asia, but from around the world.

Opened to the public in November 2011, this expansive park spans 73 hectares and is nestled at the intersection of Navoi Street and Al-Farabi Avenue in the Bostandyk district. With its breathtaking mountain backdrop, it has quickly become a beloved spot for both locals and visitors alike.
It's a wonderful park. It serves as a tribute to the first president of Kazakhstan. Lot of space inside and very calm and clean. In autumn, it becomes colourful. Get on a warm jacket, buy a coffee from the cafe inside the park, sit on the benches and enjoy every sip. 😁

The First President's Park in Almaty is a beautiful and well-maintained green space perfect for a relaxing stroll or a peaceful retreat from the city. With its picturesque walking paths, fountains, and stunning views of the snow-capped mountains, the park offers a great spot for photography and outdoor activities. The landscaped gardens and open spaces make it ideal for picnics, jogging, or simply enjoying nature. It’s especially stunning in autumn when the trees turn vibrant shades of red and gold. A must-visit for those looking to unwind in a serene environment!

Beautiful park can see the mountains view. Can start walking from the entrance all the way into the park, after passing by the Japanese gardens will arrive at the mountain viewing point. Very well maintained park with many chairs. From the side can walk to the dining street. The mega mall is walking distance from here. Can go there for ferries wheels if you like to enjoy the view from top. Public transport is easy to access this place.

First President Park in Almaty is absolutely breathtaking! The park is vast, beautifully landscaped, and filled with wide pathways, fountains, and greenery that make it a perfect spot for a peaceful walk or a relaxing afternoon. The views of the surrounding city and nearby mountains are stunning, especially during sunset, making it ideal for photography and quiet reflection. However, despite its beauty, the park does feel a bit abandoned in certain areas. Some sections seem underused or less maintained, giving it a quiet and almost eerie atmosphere at times. Still, this also adds a unique charm—walking through the empty spaces makes it feel like a private escape from the bustle of the city. I especially enjoyed watching families and couples stroll leisurely, and taking in the expansive landscape. It’s a perfect blend of natural beauty and city convenience, and even with its slightly deserted areas, it remains a must-visit for anyone in Almaty. Definitely a place to experience at your own pace and enjoy the calm, scenic surroundings!
Djvred — Google review
Nice park but hard access for car or online taxi to drop or pick up. You can get a view with mountain here. Lots of kids during the weekend. a bit dissapointing no flowers when we arrived even it is spring, but still okay.
Crystaline C — Google review
The park was a lot of fun. I wouldn't necessarily put it at the top of your Almaty to-do list, but if you're looking for a pretty spot to fill some time, this is a great spot to check out. The most photogenic spot is definitely the entrance. The rest of the park is pretty and forested, but otherwise kind of unremarkable. Still, I'm glad I checked it out!
Aden A — Google review
Big and clean city park, with great views. We were not sure dogs were allowed but saw no signs against and no one stopped us entering. Inside, no one was walking their dogs so, not sure in the end.
Bulle B — Google review
so peaceful. so wonderful. I layed in the grass to soak it all in. there's so much room to walk. do you want a picnic? a proposal? a place to rest your eyes and mind? there's so much green and trees and flowers and the views of the mountains are just extravagant! I really hope to go again when I pass through Almaty.

(Translated by Google) If you visit Almaty and want to experience the real Kazakh market atmosphere, you must not miss the Green Market or Zelyony Bazaar, an old market in the city center that is full of color and life. Just a few steps in, you will immediately smell dried fruits and smoked meats. Here, there are zones for fresh, dried, spices, clothing and souvenirs. But the best is the dry fruits and meat zone, because it is full of friendly and smiling vendors who are ready to let us try before buying without rushing. Things you should not miss: - Dried apricots and dried peaches from the west of the country, naturally sweet without adding sugar. - Processed horse meat (Kazy), a national dish that Kazakhs are proud of for its rich taste and moderate saltiness. - Fresh spices such as cumin, dried chili peppers and various dried goods sold by the kilo. Opel likes the atmosphere here because it still maintains the classic “market” feel, not overly seasoned, with sincerity from the vendors and the ability to bargain. Here, bargaining is a normal thing. If you taste something and like it, buy it. Because when you walk back, you may not recognize the stall. 😂 For those who are passionate about local culture, local food, or want beautiful vintage photos, you must visit Green Market at least once. Because this place is not just a market. But it is the heart of the Almaty people's way of life. The first Cathedral of the city. The oldest cathedral in the city. As the city was founded in 19 century starting with four villages: Fides, Spes, Caritas et Sapientia. Faith, Hope, Love and Wisdom. In Russian the first one stands for Vera, so the city was called Verniy. As the city started to grow, the wooden cathedral was built. But very soon it became too small, and over the old one - the new one, much bigger was built. And the oldest cathedral one was disassembled. And transferred to its new place as a Cathedral of the Holy Kazan Icon of Santa Maria . As it stays till today. The cathedral is the must see place: not only from inside, with beautiful iconostasis, old and holy icons , but also because of the cave church at the basement with Holy relics from most worshiped monasteries: Kiev Pechersk Monastery, Rilla Monastery, Optina Monastery, Pochaev Monastery and others. There is a Cross made of white marble, that was placed where Saint Parfenii (Krasovskiy) accepted martyrdom for the Holy Faith. The Icon of the Saint is right behind the cross. There are also a Chapel in honor of St Sevastian (Karagandinskii): very honored Saint in Kazakhstan, and the beautiful park with old oaks and sculptures. The real painted icons can be found in the Cathedral store, right next to the entrance.
